The struggle against the Islamic Center and mosque near the ruins of the World Trade Center seems over. The owners of the building, whoever they are, have the legal right to build whatever they want, and will exercise that right. The opposition, however, did not lose the fight. It exposed those behind the project and their motives; as a result, many people woke up to the danger of Islamism.

Efforts to insist on openness and transparency must continue – but in a different, and more important direction.

The proposed Islamic Center is only a building. A far greater threat to American security and values is the Muslim Brotherhood, a worldwide Islamist organization that is behind this project,

and many others, that seeks to expand the influence of radical political Islam.

Founded in Egypt, in 1928, the Brotherhood is the source of modern radical Islamic movements.

With branches in 70 countries and linked to major Islamic organizations, it has an extensive and well-financed network of educational, social and cultural institutions that promote a strategic plan for Islamic dominance – not through violence, but integration, becoming part of the national social and political life, and promoting Sharia law. These connections give it access to political power, and explain why it and the organizations it supports are courted by governments and NGOs.

Adapting to local conditions, the Brotherhood provides educational, social and religious services to Muslim communities, and, because of a lack of local leadership, assumes an advocacy role to non-Muslim political leaders and institutions.

Except for its support of terrorism de-legitimization against Israel, and opposition to wars in Muslim countries, it is non-violent, although it distributes radical Islamist literature and is affiliated with radical clerics.

As Lorenzo Vidino observes in his book, The New Muslim Brotherhood in the West, the Brotherhood is “a global ideological movement” that uses a “sophisticated international network” to spread Islam and achieve world domination.

Jihad, a uniquely Islamist combination of religious and political/military agendas, seeks to eradicate the “moral bankruptcy of Western culture,” and establish Islamic rule via a Caliphate, under Sharia – strict Islamic law.

Through a network of educational, social, professional and cultural organizations – which, in the West, do not reveal their Muslim Brotherhood connection – they exert political influence and promote a mix of religious and political ideologies associated with the extremist Wahhabi form of Islam.

Supported by Saudi Arabia, Gulf States, and wealthy Muslims, they espouse a global strategy for Islamic hegemony.

Ian Johnson’s A mosque in Munich; Nazis, CIA and the rise of the MB in the West, explains: the Brotherhood “does more than target Jews. It creates a mental preconditioning for terrorism.” Not only do they oppose a “peace process” with Israel, they oppose Israel’s existence altogether.

Critical of Western and particularly American values, culture and interests, yet part of the system, they have established a vast network of organizations to advance their agenda.

The North American Connection

The Muslim Student Association (MSA,) the largest Muslim campus organization, with more than 250 chapters, was initiated by

the Muslim Brotherhood. Although its current involvement is unclear, the agendas are similar.

Engaged in protests against Israel and disrupting pro-Israel speakers and forums, assisted by left-wing student organizations, and, of course, tolerated by administrators, this explains the upsurge of hostility towards Israel, opposition to America’s involvement in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, and “American imperialism.”

Steven Merley’s comprehensive study of the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States, published by the Hudson Institute, concludes: “(The Muslim Brotherhood’s) extensive history of support for Islamic fundamentalism, anti-Semitism, and support for terrorism … includes ideological, financial, and legal support, particularly for Hamas and other Palestinian terror organizations.”

Brotherhood organizations, like the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), which grew out of the Islamic Association of Palestine (IAP), a front group fundraising for Islamic Jihad and Hamas terrorist organizations, are not outgrowths of popular, or communal expressions, like other religious organizations, but are self-appointed representatives, combining a volatile mix of religion and politics.

With over 30 branches in North America, CAIR presents itself as the “largest Muslim civil rights organization,” seeking to “enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.” A few years ago, CAIR was included in a list of unindicted co-conspirators alleged by prosecutors to have participated in a conspiracy to illegally funnel money to Hamas through the Holy Land Foundation.

Daniel Pipes and Sharon Chadha write: “Perhaps the most obvious problem with CAIR is the fact that at least five of its employees and board members have been arrested, convicted, deported, or otherwise linked to terrorism-related charges and activities … CAIR has a key role in the “Wahhabi lobby”—the network of organizations, usually supported by donations from Saudi Arabia, whose aim is to propagate the especially extreme version of Islam practiced in Saudi Arabia … CAIR has consistently shown itself to be on the wrong side of the war on terrorism, protecting, defending, and supporting both accused and even convicted radical Islamic terrorists.”

Rebuilding trust a 2-way street

In the early 1990s, following the Oslo Accords, the Brotherhood formed several organizations that opposed any peace agreement. The Muslim American Society (MAS) describes itself as a civic group, involved in “religious, charitable, social, cultural, and educational” affairs, working to improve “family, and society,” and “move people to strive for God consciousness, liberty and justice and to convey Islam with utmost clarity. Our vision is a “virtuous and just American society.”
MAS actively recruits voters, which gives it political clout. Lacking any other leadership available, MAS presents itself as the representative of the Muslim community, although many Muslims disagree and are most are not affiliated.

The group publishes a magazine, The American Muslim, which supports suicide bombings as “martyr operations” sanctioned by the Koran, and portrays Asian Muslim terrorists as “freedom fighters.”

With all of this information, one would think that US government officials would be concerned about the activities of Brotherhood-supported organizations.

Instead, they are feted by the White House, and supported by the State Department, CIA, and even the FBI, according to www.globalmbreport.com – which systematically tracks the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Muslim Brotherhood, the first modern pan-Arab, transnational Islamic movement in the world, is well-organized and financed, politically savvy and connected. Offering an extremist form of Islam, Wahhabism, linked to a political agenda, Jihad, and world domination, the organization is inconsistent with American values.

The struggle, therefore, must shift from the Islamic center to the Muslim Brotherhood, its message,

its mission, and its role in American society. Just as bigotry and prejudice have no place in America, so do misrepresentation and lack of transparency. Such accountability is essential in an open, democratic society, and we are all responsible for protecting that heritage.

By hiding, or deliberately camouflaging their sources of funding, alliances and intentions, some Muslim leaders have contaminated any basis of trust. Rebuilding that trust is a two-way street, a dialogue of respect based on truthfulness. To be accepted, Muslims must nurture an Islam that is consistent with American values, laws and shared ethos.

THE SEVEN HEADS ON JOHN’S BEASTS IN REVELATION 13 & 17

PART 4 – The Fourth Head

Revelation 13:1 – And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the

sea, having SEVEN HEADS and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

Revelation 17:3 – So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having SEVEN HEADS and ten horns.

Mountains are at times used to refer to great governments or kingdoms in the Bible, such as in Isaiah when it refers to Christ’s Kingdom being established as the top Kingdom among the other nations, represented as lower mountains or little hills.

Isaiah 2:2-4 – And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

[3] And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. [4] And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

The SEVEN HEADS represent seven great mountains (governments or kingdoms) that have been composite parts in the development of the final great Revelation beast kingdom of antichrist. These seven kingdoms of man have historically given their mammon contributions of knowledge, culture, and scientific advancements, as they have afflicted and affected Israel since God called her out of Egypt.

The First Head in Part 1 was the Egyptian Kingdom

The Second Head is in Part 2 was the Assyrian Kingdom

The Third Head in Part 4 was the Babylonian Kingdom

The Fourth Head was the Medo-Persian Kingdom

[14] The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, that they should be ready against that day. [15] The posts went out, being hastened by the king’s commandment, and the decree was given in Shushan

the palace. And the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city Shushan was perplexed.

Esther 10:1,2 – And the king Ahasuerus laid a tribute upon the land, and upon the isles of the sea.

[2] And all the acts of his power and of his might, and the declaration of the greatness of Mordecai, whereunto the king advanced him, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia?

The Achaemenid Empire (ca. 550–330 BCE), also known as the Persian Empire, was the successor state of the Median Empire, ruling over significant portions of what would become Greater Iran.

The Persian and the Median Empire taken together are also known as the Medo-Persian Empire, which encompassed the combined territories of several earlier empires.

The Persian Empire was the largest empire by geographical extent in ancient times; at the height of its power,

the empire encompassed approximately 8 million km. The empire was forged by Cyrus the Great, and spanned three continents: Asia, Africa and Europe. At its greatest extent, the empire included the modern territories of Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, parts of Central Asia, Asia Minor, Thrace and Macedonia, much of the Black Sea coastal regions, Iraq, northern Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and all significant population centers of ancient Egypt as far west as Libya.

It is noted in western history as the foe of the Greek city states during the Greco-Persian Wars, for emancipation of slaves including the Jews from their Babylonian captivity, and

for instituting the usage of official languages throughout its territories.

The empire had a centralised, bureaucratic administration under the Emperor and a permanent large army and civil service, inspiring similar developments in later empires.

The Achaemenid Persian empire was invaded by Alexander III of Macedon, after which it collapsed and disintegrated in 330 BC into what later became the Ptolemaic Kingdom and Seleucid Empire, in addition to other minor territories which gained independence at that time. Iranian rule was re-established in the region starting from the rise of Arsacids in middle of 3rd century BCE.

[12] And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. [13] These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. [14] These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful. [15] And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. [16] And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. The Empire that ruled over the known world when John wrote Revelation was the great city known as Rome. Today it is the home of the Vatican.

The woman is the Roman Catholic Church and all the branches of harlots that have broken off her Orthodox Sister.

The ten horns represent Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco.

The God of Israel, after some two thousand years, will answer her cry from the Negev Wilderness in the Great Tribulation. He will bring a remnant through the Tribulation Period, come as Messiah, and give them the Land Grant he promised Israel through Isaac and Jacob (Israel).

Bishops in Rome tossed theological equivalent of hand grenade, threatening to blow up decades of efforts to improve Catholic-Jewish relations.

This past Saturday, a synod of bishops in Rome tossed the theological equivalent of a hand grenade, threatening to blow up decades of efforts to improve Catholic- Jewish relations.

In a press conference at the Vatican, Monsignor Cyril Salim Bustros, a Greek Melkite archbishop from Boston and president of the Church’s Commission for the Message, launched a blistering attack against the very foundation of Jewish belief. “The Holy Scriptures,” Bustros declared, “cannot be used to justify the return of Jews to Israel and the displacement of the Palestinians, to justify the occupation by Israel of Palestinian lands.”

Not stopping there, he went on to state that “we Christians cannot speak of the ‘promised land’ as an exclusive right for a privileged Jewish people… There is no longer a chosen people.”

And so, in one fell swoop, a senior Church official sought to deny the unique, covenantal relationship between God and the Jews, rejecting the divine promise to restore the people of Israel to their Land. One cannot help but wonder: What Bible is the Vatican reading? Whichever one it is, it must be missing a few pages, as even a cursory glance at the Scriptures makes clear that the Jewish people’s right to the Land of Israel is indisputably ordained.

Take, for example, Isaiah 14:1-2: “The Lord will have compassion on Jacob; once again He will choose Israel and will settle them in their own land.” Or how about Jeremiah 11:5, where God says: “I will fulfill the oath I swore to your forefathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey…” And then there’s Ezekiel 34: 11-13. And Hosea 3:4-5. And Amos 9:14-15. And Obadiah 1:17, Zephaniah 3:19-20 and Zechariah 8:7-8

YOU GET the point. But it doesn’t seem that the Catholic Church does.

After the Lebanese-born Bustros’s remarks caused a furor, the Vatican spokesman waited two days before issuing a mealy-mouthed statement which did little to calm the storm.

“If one wants a summary of the synod’s position, attention must currently be paid to the ‘Message,’ which is the only written text approved by the synod in the last few days,” the Vatican’s Father Federico Lombardi said.

“There is also a great richness and variety in the contributions made by the fathers, but which as such should not all be considered as the voice of the synod as a whole.”

Lombardi’s efforts to contain the fallout won’t fool anyone. There is no getting around the fact that this convocation of bishops was called by the pope himself. Moreover, the perception around the world was that the Vatican had officially delegitimized Israel while assaulting Judaism itself. As Catholic writer William Doino Jr. noted: “In a statement meant to be fully and intensely Christian, Israel was singled out for blame and criticism. That’s not fair, much less Christian.”

Indeed, this entire episode is little more than a cheap bit of politics wrapping itself in the robes of religion. Bustros and his colleagues clearly have a political ax to grind with the Jewish state, and they shamefully do not hesitate to invoke the sacred for this most profane of goals.

My Christian friends tell me that the words “Palestine” and “Palestinians” do not even appear in the New Testament.

So the learned bishops could not have come up with the idea of the “occupation of Palestine” while attending Sunday school.

Furthermore, by Bustros’s own definition, the founder of Christianity would also have to be considered an “occupier” and a “settler,” for according to Christian belief, Jesus the Jew was born and raised in Bethlehem.

That is the very same Bethlehem that Bustros would now like to see become part of a Palestinian state.

No matter how one looks at it, the synod’s unbridled insult to Israel and the Jewish people cannot be allowed to stand. If it is not denounced and corrected forthwith, it will quickly be exploited by Israel’s enemies to stir up still more hatred.

IN A letter to Cardinal-elect Kurt Koch, the newly-appointed head of the Vatican’s Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews, the Anti-Defamation League rightly singled out Bustros’s remarks as “the worst kind of anti-Judaism, bordering on anti-Semitism.”

It called on Koch to “swiftly and publicly correct Archbishop Bustros’s shocking and damaging statements,” and to clarify whether his “interpretation of the synod’s final report reflects the intention of the synod on these profound theological matters.”

I would take it one step further. Given the Catholic Church’s long and dark history of anti-Jewish persecution, it is only fitting that the pope himself speak out loudly and clearly on this issue. It is incumbent upon Pope Benedict to transform this turn of events into a profound opportunity to atone for what the Church has done to the Jewish people through the centuries.

Ironically, it was 45 years ago today, on October 28, 1965, that the Second Vatican Council approved a document known as Nostra Aetate, which heralded a sea change in the Church’s position toward Jews. In its wake, much has been accomplished in enhancing relations.

But Bustros and his hate-filled rhetoric now threaten to undermine nearly half a century of dialogue and progress. What a terrible shame that would be.

For while the Church may pride itself on preaching love and tolerance, when it comes to its attitude toward the Jews, it still has a long way to go.

Pope Benedict XVI and Middle East bishops demand that Israel accept U.N. resolutions calling for an end to its occupation of Arab lands.

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said Sunday that a meeting of Middle East bishops was hijacked by enemies of Israel, after the gathering at the Vatican largely blamed the state for conflict in the region.

In a communiqué at the end of their two-week meeting, the bishops demanded that Israel accept United Nations resolutions calling for an end to its occupation of Arab lands, and told Israel it shouldn’t use the Bible to justify injustices against the Palestinians.

“We express our disappointment that this important synod has become a forum for political attacks on Israel in the best history of Arab propaganda,” Ayalon said in a statement Sunday.

“The synod was hijacked by an anti-Israel majority,” he said.

The meeting was convened by Pope Benedict XVI to discuss the future of embattled Christians in the largely Muslim region. It formally ended with a Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica on Sunday during which the pontiff called for greater religious freedom and peace in the Middle East.

But the bishops attending the gathering issued their conclusions on Saturday.

They said they had reflected on the suffering and insecurity in which Israelis live and on the status of Jerusalem, a city holy to Christians, Jews and Muslims. While the bishops c ondemned terrorism and anti-Semitism, they laid much of the blame for the c

onflict squarely on Israel.

They listed the occupation of Palestinian lands, Israel’s separation barrier with the West Bank, its military checkpoints, political prisoners, demolition of homes and disturbance of Palestinians’ socio-economic lives as factors that have made life increasingly difficult for Palestinians.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said it was absurd that the Jewish state had been condemned since Israel is the only country in the region where Christians are actually thriving.

According to statistics he provided, there were some 151,700 Christians in Israel last year, compared with 132,000 in 1999 and 107,000 two decades ago.

Palmor also criticized the bishops’ statement that Israel shouldn’t use the Bible to justify injustices against the Palestinians.

“This has never been a policy of any government in Israel, so this position sounds particularly hollow,” he said. “Let he who has never sinned cast the first stone.”

In recent years, relations between Jews and the pope have sometimes been tense.

Many Jews criticized Benedict’s decision to move his predecessor Pius XII toward sainthood, saying the wartime pontiff didn’t do enough to protect Jews from the Holocaust. The Vatican has maintained that Pius used behind-the-scenes diplomacy in a bid to save Jewish lives.

Another sore point recently was Benedict’s decision to revoke the excommunication of a renegade bishop who had denied that millions of Jews died in the Holocaust. The Vatican said it wasn’t aware of the bishop’s views when the excommunication was lifted.

Some Jews also have been angered by Benedict’s reaching out to Catholic traditionalists, including his revival of a prayer for the conversion of Jews.

Benedict visited the Holy Land last year in a pilgrimage meant largely to boost interfaith relations. In January, he visited a Rome synagogue.

The Mideast meeting at the Vatican involved about 185 participants, including nine patriarchs of the Mideast’s ancient Christian churches and representatives from 13 other Christian communities. A rabbi and two Muslim clerics were invited to the meeting as well.

The exodus of the faithful from the birthplace of Christianity was a major theme of the gathering. The Catholic Church has long been a minority in the Middle East, but its presence is shrinking further as a result of conflict, discrimination and economic problems.

“Peace is possible. Peace is urgent,” Benedict said in his homily. Peace is also the best remedy to avoid the emigration from the Middle East.

The pope also called freedom of religion one of the fundamental human rights, which each state should always respect and said the issue should be the subject of dialogue with Muslims.

The pontiff said that while freedom of worship exists in many Mideast countries, the space given to the actual freedom to practice is many times very limited. Expanding this space, he said, is necessary to guarantee true freedom to live and profess one’s faith.

According to Vatican statistics, Catholics represent just 1.6 percent of the region’s population. Christians as a whole represent 5.62 percent.

Palmor urged Christians not to flee the region.

“Israel views their presence in the Middle East as a blessing and regrets their decline in Arab countries,” he said.

The Palestinians welcomed the synod’s conclusions in a statement released by Saeb Erekat, a senior aide to the Palestinian leadership. The international community must uphold its moral and legal responsibility to put a speedy end to the illegal Israel occupation, Erekat said.

Also Sunday, Benedict announced that the 2012 synod would be dedicated to the theme of evangelization. The pontiff has recently created a new Vatican office – the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization – to revive Christianity in Europe, part of his efforts to counter secular trends in traditionally Christian countries.

Revelation 13:1 – And I stood upon the sand of

the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having SEVEN HEADS and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

Revelation 17:3 – So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having SEVEN HEADS and ten horns.

Mountains are at times used to refer to great governments or kingdoms in the Bible, such as in Isaiah when it refers to Christ’s Kingdom being established as the top Kingdom among the other nations, represented as lower mountains or little hills.

Isaiah 2:2-4 – And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. [3] And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. [4] And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

The SEVEN HEADS represent seven great mountains (governments or kingdoms) that have been composite parts in the development of the final great Revelation beast kingdom of antichrist. These seven kingdoms of man have historically given their mammon contributions of knowledge, culture, and scientific advancements, as they have afflicted and affected Israel since God called her out of Egypt.

The First Head in Part 1 was the Egyptian Kingdom

The Second Head is in Part 2 was the Assyrian Kingdom

The Third Head was the Babylonian Kingdom

Civilization Of Old Babylonia: Literature, Science, Art, And Religion

A People as far advanced in social and political organization as were the ancient Babylonians could not have failed to make similar progress in the higher elements of civilization.

They were, indeed, pre-eminently a practical folk, and were guided in all their activities by the material ends to be gained. Their literary remains will serve as an illustration in point.

Writing, in use among them from the earliest times, was primarily employed for business purposes, in contracts and other legal documents. Likewise the very practical conjuration formulae were the most numerous of the religious texts. The art of writing was confined in great measure to priestly circles, to scribes taught in the priestly schools and associated with the temples.

Documents of all kinds were written to order by these scribes, and the signature affixed by pressing the thumb-nail or a seal into the clay. The difficulty of acquiring the complicated cuneiform script cut off the majority of the people from ever using it. For te aching it,

a number of text-books were employed which were copied by the students.

Some of the most valuable inscriptional material, like the kings’ lists, have come down to us in these students’ copies. In Sippar, an inscription on a small round tablet has been found, the contents of which suggest that it may have been an ancient diploma or medal of that famous priestly school. It reads, “Whosoever has distinguished himself at the place of tablet-writing shall shine as the light” (Hilprecht, Recent Research, etc., p. 86). The scribes were, indeed, not only an honorable, but even an indispensable element of Babylonian society; upon them depended social and political progress. The large number of letters now in our museums from

officials and private persons, both men and women, shows that communication by means of writing was widespread, but all letters were probably put into writing by scribes, and it is to be presumed that scribes were employed to read them to their recipients.

One cannot safely argue from these letters or from the business documents that ability to read and write belonged to the people at large.

Old Babylonia was, from the earliest historical period, not merely in possession of a highly conventionalized form of writing, but already had also begun to produce a literature which embraced no narrow range of subjects.

The chief element in it was religious, consisting of hymns, psalms, myths, ritual prescripts, and votive inscriptions. Even where religion is not directly the subject,

the documents show its influence. Thus the astronomical and astrological texts are from priestly circles, and the epic and descriptive poetry deals with the gods and heroes of mythology. Reference has already been made to the legal codes and to fragments of political wisdom, while our knowledge of the history of the age comes from the various royal inscriptions written on palace walls, cylinders, steles, and statues. The origin of this literary activity lies back of the beginning of history. Before the age of Sargon, once thought primitive, extends a long period from which important royal texts have been preserved.

Sargon, indeed, is thought to have focussed the literary activity of his time in a series of religious works prepared for his royal library in Agade, and no doubt every ruler who obtained wider dominion than that over a single city-state took occasion to foster science and literature. Even Gudea of Shirpurla, whose political position is uncertain, had long narratives of his pious acts carved on his statues for the enlightenment and praise of posterity. Chief among these patrons of learning was the founder of Babylonian unity, Khammurabi, under whom the previous achievements of scholars, theologians, and poets were gathered together and edited into literary works of prime importance. In his time or shortly after, the cosmogonic narratives, the rituals, the epics, the laws, and the astronomical works were put into the form in which they are now preserved.

“Muslims cannot, however, continue ignoring new developments in the morality of all humanity regarding the religion-state relations. First, the foundation of the modern state is geographical, not faith-based.

Third, every nation needs to consider the laws and legislation of other nations.

“Fortunately for modern Muslims who are deeply rooted in their cultural heritage, there are potentials in their inherited culture that might help. First, Muslim societies have always been open to religious diversity.

“The unbroken existence of Christian minorities in the Middle East from the birth of Islam until today is a good illustration of this potential. Second, Islamic law is very flexible and open to perpetual interpretation and adaptation, and it is easy to incorporate most modern laws within the Islamic legal vision.

“Three players”

“A closer look at the conflict over religion and state in the Islamic world reveals the existence of three players who have a stake in the outcome of this conflict. These players are the Muslim majorities, the non-Muslim minorities, and the non-practicing Muslims.

Each one of these players has its own set of concerns.

“The Muslim majorities see Islam as an essential part of inspiration in public life, and they don’ t wan

t their value system to be compromised. They are also afraid of foreign manipulation of the minority’s case.

“Some people among these majorities believe that the issue of secularism is irrelevant. We have no church, they argue, and secularism, by definition, is ‘the separation between the state and the church.’

“Some would even go as far as saying that Islam is a secular religion, and we are already secular, because we have no clergy who have a claim on being God’s legate on earth.

“The non-Muslim minorities don’t want to be treated as second class citizens, and they don’t want their religious freedom restricted. They are not willing to accept less than equal rights and responsibilities in their land of birth.

“As for non-practicing Muslims, Islam is acceptable as an individualistic observance, but not a social or political system. They believe the state should avoid legislation of morality, especially religious morality.”

“Non-Muslim Minorities and Non-Practicing Muslims Need To Accept the Fact That Islamic Law Is Too Rich and Too Important To Be Discarded”

“Towards a compromise

“The three players in this Islamic metamorphosis need to come to a historical compromise that will save much time and energy, and help produce a swift transition of the Muslim societies to democracy and modernity.

“Non-Muslim minorities and non-practicing Muslims need to accept the fact that Islamic law is too rich and too important to be discarded. The historical analogy with Western experience is misleading, since there was never a universally subscribed to ‘Christian law’ that governed societies and states.

Unlike the Islamic law that has been the law of many Muslim states and empires throughout the last 1400 years, the medieval Canon law was to govern the Church, not the state or the society at large.

“Muslim majorities need to accept that faith is no longer the basis

for a social contract; geography is the new basis.

“They must also guarantee the political and legal equality of their non-Muslim and non-religious citizens. Any legalization of discrimination against non-Muslim citizens in terms of constitutional and political rights is absurd. Unfortunately that is what we still have today in many Arab countries – including the very secular ones, where constitutions deprive non-Muslim citizens from running in presidential elections (good for them anyway, since the elections are never fair or transparent).

“Institutional secularism that prevents rulers from misusing religion, and guarantees freedom of conscience for all, should be accepted by all. Ideological secularism that chases religion away from public life should be rejected by all, because it is pure coercion.

“Legal secularism that ignores the centrality of Islamic laws is meaningless. However, a great reinterpretation and adaptation of Islamic laws is necessary to help this compromise take place.

These laws are flexible, and there has never been a monopoly in interpreting them.”
