A comet is a relatively small solar system body that orbits the Sun. When close enough to the Sun they display a visible coma (a fuzzy outline or atmosphere due to solar radiation) and sometimes a tail.

Asteroids are similar to comets in that they also contain organic compounds, but do not develop a fully discernible comet coma or tail, because the frozen organic compounds on their internal rock and metallic compositions are less in quantity.

A meteoroid is a small rock or particle of debris in our solar system. They range in size from dust to around 10 metres in diameter (larger objects are usually referred to as asteroids).

A meteoroid that burns up as it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere is known as a meteor. If you’ve ever looked up at the sky at night and seen a streak of light or ‘shooting star’ what you are actually seeing is a meteor.

A meteoroid that survives falling through the Earth’s atmosphere and colliding with the Earth’s surface is known as a meteorite.

Revelation 8:10,11 – And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; [11] And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

In Revelation 8:7-9, John has viewed the land and sea events described previously in Chapters 2, 4, 5, and 6. Now his view is shifted upward where he observes a great star falling from heaven. The word used for star is “aster.” It can mean any one of three different things. It can be a navigational star in the heavens such as Polaris, the North Star – or a “shooting” star, better known as a meteor – or a comet. Sometimes meteors and comets are lumped together as “asteroids” by various types of commentators, but there is a considerable difference between a meteor and a comet. Since all the fixed stars in our universe (except for the sun) are millions to billions of light years from our planet and, as such, eliminate themselves from consideration as candidates for John’s Wormwood, this leaves us with only two candidates – a meteor or a comet. In order to select between these two it is necessary to carefully examine John’s description of the characteristics of Wormwood.

Using John’s description, the following statements concerning Wormwood cannot be easily refuted: (1) It burned like a lamp, and the Hebrew lamp had a fuel supply that kept it burning. (2) It fell upon the third part of the earth’s water surface, and yet John did not so much as mention a quiver in the earth’s crust as it struck. He mentions earthquakes time after time throughout the Book of Revelation, but does not mention one occurring as Wormwood strikes the earth. (3) Whatever Wormwood is, it dissolves in water, because the water becomes Wormwood. (4) When it dissolves in man’s water supply it gives the water a bitter taste, and it causes many who drink the water to die.

When a “shooting star” is outside the earth’s atmosphere it is called a meteoroid. When it enters the earth’s atmosphere it is called a meteor. And, if it is large enough to eventually strike the earth’s surface, before burning into ashes, the solid portion that remains is identified as a meteorite. For simplicity I will refer to all three phases as “shooting stars” to avoid confusion.

Shooting stars are made of nickel, iron, and/or stone. Now, let us reason together as to why Wormwood cannot be a shooting star by comparing it with John’s Revelation description.

1. A shooting star does not burn like a Hebrew lamp. It does not have a continuous fuel supply. Being a solid it burns out very quickly in a matter of seconds to minutes.

2, If a shooting star large enough to strike one-third of the earth was to make such a contact, the impact of such a solid object would jar the earth to its very foundations, but John reports no such shaking in his vision.

3. Nickel, iron, and stone do not dissolve in water, but the water is said to become Wormwood.

4. Nickel, iron, and stone do not give water a bitter taste, nor or they poisonous. During the course of man’s recorded history, thousands of shooting stars have fallen into local water sources, and yet there has never been a validated report of poisoning recorded.

One might argue at this point that God could make a shooting star with a continuous fuel supply, which melted instead of burned, dissolved in water, made water taste bitter, and was poisonous to mankind. He doesn’t have to make one, because he made many heavenly bodies long ago that do all of these things – we call them comets. The “aster” of Revelation 8:10 is one of God’s trillions of comets. Why am I so confident that Wormwood is a comet? My reasons are as follows:

1. A comet has a continuous fuel supply. As it approaches the sun its fuel supply begins to be released by sublimation, and it then moves through the heavens like a great, ever burning lamp.

2. If a comet entered the earth’s atmosphere it would not burn to ashes, for a comet is composed largely of ice. It would not burn, but would melt by sublimation, and eventually fall as liquid, and a super thick cloud, upon one-third of man’s water supply.

3. As the ice melted from a solid into a super thick glob of vapor and liquid, the trillions of pieces of nickel, iron, and stone, embedded in the ice, would be released. The super thick cloud of liquid and vapor would decelerate in his descent toward the earth, but the released solids, being heavier, would be subject to greater gravitation pull, and would proceed to the earth in advance of the cloud, burning in the atmosphere as shooting stars. To an observer on the earth it would appear that all the stars of heaven were falling to earth in advance of the cloud that would eventually settle on one-third of man’s water supply. “But in those days after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, [25] And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.” (Mark 13:24,25)

4. As the comet passed through the earth’s atmosphere during its melting process, it would release methyl cyanide, hydrogen cyanide, and a wide range of cyanogenic poisons, all of which are 100 percent water soluble and have a bitter taste.

5. Methyl cyanide, hydrogen cyanide, and cyanogenic gases are extremely toxic, and many would die of the poisoning effects.

Comets originate from a region between our solar system and the nearest stars. There are trillions of comets in this great comet cloud. There appears to be a virtually endless supply of them, for each year new comets are discovered and others go out of existence, victims of the shattering effects of the sun. When earth passes through the old path of a comet, the small solid particles, which melted off the outer veneer of its icy surface, are intercepted, and meteor showers are produced in our atmosphere. These showers occasionally exhibit as many as a thousand shooting stars per minute falling through the earth’s atmosphere.

A comet is one of God’s strangest creations. There is nothing quite like it. A comet nucleus is made of solid ice, but it is actually ice made of gases that solidified in the unbelievable coldness of outer space. As the ice ball nucleus approaches the sun, its outer surface begins to pass directly from solid ice to a gas by sublimation, and we earthlings begin to observe its long, gaseous, lamp like tail. A Hebrew lamp, because they did not refine the olive oil, put out a gray trail of smoke when it burned. Figure 18 illustrates how the comet’s tail always points away from the sun because of the sun’s solar winds.

The black specks on the surface of the comet in figure 17 are small pieces of nickel, iron, and stone that become embedded in the outer layer of ice by contact as the comet makes its long elliptical orbit around the sun and our solar system. These pieces of nickel, iron, and stone are released into its tail along the comet’s path when the sun’s rays begin to melt the comet, as illustrated in figure 18. Sometimes the gaseous tail of a comet has been observed to extend out to 150 million miles from its nucleus, and over this great distance a trail of small, solid pieces of space debris is laid down in space. Every year, particularly during the late fall and early winter, the earth passes through several comet tails of the past, and dramatic shooting star displays are visible in our atmosphere.

The solid chunk of ice nucleus varies in size, some being less than 20 miles across, while other icy centers are several thousand miles in diameter. When the nucleus comes within the warming rays of the sun it begins to melt, and this produces the coma and tail shown in figure 19. The icy nucleus is composed of hydrogen, helium, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen gases in a solid icy state. As the ultraviolet rays of the sun strike this combination of elemental gases, several compounds are produced. Among these gases are methyl cyanide, hydrogen cyanide, and a whole range of cyanogenic poisons. When Russian, Italian, and Japanese satellites went in, around, and over the coma and nucleus of Halley’s Comet in 1986, scientists were shocked by the very heavy concentrations of cyanogenic gases that were discovered. The same heavy concentrations have also been observed in all probes of comets since 1986.

I do not know which of the trillions of comets God will select to be Wormwood, but I am certain that Wormwood is a comet. When Wormwood enters the earth’s atmosphere it will not burn, it will melt. And, as it goes directly from a solid to a gas, it will release into the earth’s atmospheric the aforementioned deadly gases of figure 19. Figure 20 pictures another creation of God described in Ecclesiastes 1:7 – “All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.”

This creation of God, known as the Hydrological Cycle, is the cycle into which the 100 percent water soluble, poisonous gases of figure 21 will be released. God has so designed the earth’s atmosphere that the sun’s rays cause exposed water surfaces to be turned into a rising gas called water vapor. As the water vapor is set free from its liquid state by evaporation, it rises and cools at the rate of 1 degree centigrade for every 100 meters it is lifted. Continued lifting produces a visible gas structure by condensation, which we call a cloud. Further lifting causes the water vapor to condense on microscopic floating particles in the air and, if they grow heavy enough, they fall to the earth as precipitation. God’s comet gases will readily mix with God’s water vapor in God’s hydrological system to fall as God’s deadly precipitation on one-third of the water supply God made for man.

The things of God’s creation will be used to destroy most of what represents God’s most complex creation – mankind. Once again, I make my continuously repetitious point: God will destroy most of mankind with His creation, not with the creations of mankind.

At the time, it was a landbridge connecting three continents. It was bounded by the Mediterranean on the west, the Arabian Desert on the south, and the Taurus mountain range to the north. The Syrian Ministry of Tourism adds that it was also on the crossroads of the Caspian Sea, the Black Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Nile. In this vital position it was the hub of a trade network involving the ancient areas of Syria, Anatolia (Turkey), Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Aegean.

WHAT IS THE NATIONALITY OF THE ANTICHRIST?

Micah 5:1-4 – Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek. [2] But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. [3] Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel. [4] And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.

These verses, exposited in Parts 1 through 4, were written more than 700 years before the birth of Christ. And yet they present: Bethlehem as His birthplace, His rejection as ruler over Israel, His last Passover in the daughter of troops Jerusalem, His head beatings by the troops of Pontius Pilate, Herod, and the High Priest, His rejection as the judge of Israel, His Father’s siege against Israel because of their rejection of the Son (which has lasted some 2000 years), Christ’s temporary rejection of Israel, His Second Advent as Messiah after Israel’s travail of 1260 days in the Negev Wilderness, at which time His brethren will return with Him to the nation of Israel, and the first 1000 years of His eternal kingdom, which phases into the final heaven age when the present earth and heavens pass away.

Micah 5:5 – And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men.

Now, in verse 5, we find that “this man” will himself “be the peace” because He personally brings it in by Himself when he returns to be “great unto the ends of the earth” for 1000 years. “This man” who brings “the peace” of a thousand years is, of course, Jesus Christ. He is the primary contextual subject from verses 1 through 5. What happens to motivate His return to bring in the millennial reign is the movement of the Assyrian into the land of Israel. It is the final defeat and destruction of “the Assyrian” that will mark Christ’s Second Advent, and the beginning of His millennial reign.

When Micah wrote his prophecies the Assyrians had already driven into the northern Kingdom of Israel, and all that remained of Israel proper was its southern Kingdom of Judah. So what were the borders of the land of Assyria when Micah wrote the fifth chapter of his book? The borders of the Assyrian territory stretched northward from roughly where Ramallah is located in the West Bank to the present day southern border of Turkey, and eastward to the Mediterranean Sea to establish its western limits, then westward across the Euphrates River to the Tigris River north of modern Baghdad in Iraq. Technically, I suppose one might be able to say this future “Assyrian” might come out of southern Turkey, northern Iraq, or Lebanon, but since modern day Syria occupies some 85% of the area covered by the Assyrian empire at the time of Micah’s writings, I am persuaded the Assyrian antichrist will come out of Syria. The possible argument that Micah 5:5 was fulfilled during the old Assyrian invasion of Micah’s day, is thwarted by the context pattern of the four verses before it all still being unfulfilled at the time they were written, and then being linked contextually to verse 5 by “this man,” and “the peace.” Additionally, this argument is smashed by the verse that follows it.

Micah 5:6 – And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.

From the time of Micah’s writings to the present day, Israel has never “wasted the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof.” I will exposit specifically on both these locations in Prophecy Update Number 67, Lord willing.

The “Assyrian” of Micah 5:5 is not a European, an American, a Russian, an Eskimo, an Aborigine, an Ethiopian, or a platypus. He is an Assyrian Muslim, who becomes chief prince of the land where the descendants of Meshech and Tubal were dwelling when Ezekiel wrote his prophecies. I will elaborate on this in future updates, Lord willing. The expression involving “seven shepherds and eight principal men” is most assuredly an oft used Hebrew idiom. It was the Hebrew manner of expressing “more than enough.” Seven is the Hebrew word for “complete,” implying “enough,” and when “eight” is added to it, the expression means “more than enough.” When the Assyrian comes into Israel, and treads within its borders north of Beersheba for 1260 days, then Jesus will return to restore peace for 1000 years on this planet. Christ’s Second Advent is accompanied by some 5/6 of the Assyrian’s armies being destroyed by the brightness of His coming. His destruction of the Assyrian and his false prophet will make whatever force Israel is able to muster up in the Negev for the battle of Armageddon “more than enough.”

When the Assyrian sets on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, as the willful King of the North preparing to launch his final attack on Israel at the battle of Armageddon, he will be beyond all help by men and Satan.

On May 26, 2013, the Iranian regime officially began to recruit Basiji fighters to fight with Assad’s troops in Syria.

The Basij are the popular militia of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and serve as a reserve formation. They were used extensively for putting down anti-regime protests in Iranian cities during mid-2009.

The name of the operation for which these troops are being recruited is “Defenders of the Holy Site 2,” referring to the Shiite Zeynab Sanctuary on the periphery of Damascus, named for the eldest daughter of Ali, the first Shiite Imam. Her sanctuary is the object of pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands of Shiites from throughout the world.

The deployment of these Basij forces in Syria would provide greater flexibility for Assad’s army. For example, the Syrians could withdraw their front-line forces from the Golan Heights and replace them with Iranians, a regional “game-changer” that could place Iranian forces directly across from the Israel Defense Forces.

Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah decisively committed his followers on Saturday to an all-out battle in Syria to defeat the rebellion against President Bashar al-Assad. He said the organization was entering “a completely new phase,” sending troops abroad to protect its interests. The speech signaled a significant escalation in Hizbullah’s military involvement in Syria, deeply enmeshing the group in the war across the border.

Hizbullah “wouldn’t do this if they thought there was going to be some kind of reaction,” said Andrew J. Tabler, a Syria analyst with the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Ali Rizk, the Beirut bureau chief for Press TV, the satellite channel of Hizbullah’s patron Iran, noting that Nasrallah promised victory, said, “Victory means you’re in it to the very end and you’re going to go all the way. Hizbullah is going to go all the way.”

Hizbullah has essentially become the ground assault force for the Syrian Army in the battle for Qusayr and Homs Province, which links Damascus with the government’s coastal strongholds. “In Qusayr, the ones who are engaging on the front lines, the man-to-man firepower, that’s Hizbullah,” Rizk said. Lebanon’s Hizbullah has 5,000 troops fighting alongside President Assad’s forces in Syria, and another 5,000 are getting ready to join them, Salman Shaikh, director of the Doha Center of the Brookings Institution, told the World Economic Forum on Sunday.

There were also 1,500-2,000 fighters from Iraq in the battlegrounds of Syria, he said.

Iraqi Shiites Fight for Syrian Government

BAGHDAD — The Iraqi fighters in the video shoulder assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades as they walk down a highway lined with cypress trees. Grinning, some hold up cellphones and camcorders to capture the moment — the aftermath of a victorious battle to secure the Aleppo airport from Syrian rebels who had attempted to take it.

“You are the sons of Iraq and the sons of Islam!” shouts one of their commanders. The men cheer.

Weeks later in Baghdad, Abu Sajad, the nom de guerre of an Iraqi militia commander who appears in the video, proudly displayed it as proof that Iraqi Shiites are playing a critical role supporting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in what has become an increasingly sectarian and regional war. It was impossible to verify the location in the video or the circumstances.

Until recently, the involvement of Iraqi Shiites in Syria’s war was cloaked in secrecy here in Iraq, whose Shiite-led government has denied any role in the conflict. But recent interviews with militants, analysts, Arab government officials and residents of Shiite cities across Iraq reveal a trend that is growing increasingly open as Iraqi fighters come to view their participation as part of a regional struggle to defeat al-Qaeda and what they say is a broad effort by the region’s dominant Sunnis to wipe out Shiites.

At the center of the Shiite mobilization is Iran, which analysts and intelligence officials say is seeking to preserve its regional influence by funding and supplying an expanding Shiite network of armed support for the Syrian government, which is dominated by Assad’s Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam. In addition to combatants from Iranian security forces and the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, pro-Assad proxy fighters include Iraqis drawn largely from militant groups known to be backed by Iran.

The role of Iraqi Shiite fighters in Syria raises questions about the possible complicity of the Iraqi government, which U.S. officials have recently criticized for allowing Iran to use Iraqi airspace for flights that allegedly transport weapons, troops and supplies to the Assad government. Iraqi officials say they have agreed to U.S. requests for inspections of the Iranian overflights. Eight recent random inspections have found “nothing illegal,” said Kareem Nouri, a Transportation Ministry spokesman.

“We support neither the opposition nor the regime in Syria, and we will not make Iraq a part of the fight in Syria,” he said.

But Iraqi officials have warned repeatedly that Assad’s fall would spell disaster for Iraq, and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki told the Associated Press in February that a rebel victory in Syria would revive Iraq’s sectarian war. In an interview, Sami al-Askari, a Shiite lawmaker close to Maliki, said the government “turns a blind eye” to the flow of Shiite fighters to Syria, as it does in the case of Iraqi Sunnis who help Syrian rebels.

Analysts and Shiite militia leaders say it is unclear how many Iraqi Shiites have gone to fight in Syria, but Abu Sajad put the number at about 200 and said the ranks were growing quickly. He said Shiite fighters had been particularly motivated by an April statement by al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, who glorified the Syrian opposition in what he depicted as its fight against Assad and Iran, and by the Syrian Islamist rebel group Jabhat al-Nusra’s recent pledge of fealty to al-Qaeda

A senior Israeli official on Sunday denied a report that Jerusalem and Moscow have struck a deal under which Russia would withhold a Syrian-bound shipment of advanced S-300 anti-aircraft missiles.

Reports of this cancellation have “no basis in reality,” the official said. “It’s a fairy tale.

There was no agreement between Putin and Netanyahu.”

Still, the official assessed, “It’s likely that the Russians will try to stall for time and use this as a bargaining chip without following through on the deal [with Syria].”

Prime Minister Netanyahu and his national security adviser, Yaakov Amidror, explained to Putin that planes landing or taking off from Ben-Gurion International Airport outside Tel Aviv would be within the 200-km. range of the S-300 system.

The Messenger and the Covenant Messenger

Malachi 3:1 – Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.

We covered Isaiah 40:3, as quoted in John 1:23, in Parts 1 and 2 of Prophecy Updates 137B and 137C. Because Herod, the king of Israel, beheaded the messenger, John the Baptist, and then Israel delivered Jesus, it’s only true king, the covenant messenger, to be crucified by Roman Gentiles, there have more than 1900 years of trouble and warfare for Israel, which continues to this day. By the time Israel endures through what warfare is left for it, it will have received double for all its sins, and during this time of horror there will be great topographical changes in the valleys, hills, and roads of Israel.

Isaiah 40:2-4 – Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. [3] The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. [4] Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:

The Scriptures, which follow, vividly describe the period of great tribulation that will come upon Israel in the near future. This “little moment” of God’s great tribulation indignation will cover a period of some three and one-half prophetic years.

Isaiah 26:20,21 – Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. [21] For, behold, the Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

God’s fight against the enemies of Israel will not be with weapons forged by man, but will be with the burning and fuel of fire from his own creation, and, when the war is finished, his Son will sit upon the throne of David.

Isaiah 9:5-7 – For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire. [6] For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. [7] Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

God will unleash the elements of his own creation upon the unbelieving during the tribulation period. This is the way he wages war.

Isaiah 29:6 – Thou shalt be visited of the Lord of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.

Zechariah 14:3,4 – Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. [4] And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. Zechariah 14:10 – All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: and it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin’s gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananeel unto the king’s winepresses.
