The date above consists of two question marks for a reason. I started to send it out on May 9, but changed my mind because all sorts of rumors were floating around, including one that said Obama would unveil his peace plan in his June 4 speech to the Middle East.

I still agree with what was stated in my slanted headline above, but I am glad I waited two weeks before sending it out, because I doubted if Obama could get a peace plan together by that time. So, Excerpt 1 was part of the May 9 excerpt from DEBKAfile, and now I have added Excerpt 2

Obama to address Muslim world again – from Egypt

The exact location within Egypt from which US president Barack Obama will deliver another speech to the Muslim world on June 4 has yet to be determined, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Friday, May 8.

It is not clear if the US president was actually invited to visit Egypt.

But Gibb stressed: “The scope of the speech, the desire for the president to speak, is bigger than where the speech was going to be given or who’s the leadership of the country where the speech is going to be given.”

From Egypt, Obama travels June 5 to the German city of Dresden and the former Nazi death camp at Buchenwald, in whose liberation Obama’s great-uncle Charlie Payne took part in 1945 as a soldier in the US army. DEBKAfile’s Washington sources commented that this visit is intended to highlight the Holocaust, which some Muslim leaders like Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad make a point of denying, as a factor in his commitment to Israel’s security.

Those sources were unable to explain why the president felt impelled to address the Muslim people again, or why Egypt was chosen, when US relations with President Hosni Mubarak are strained over the latter’s resentment of Washington’s rapprochement with Tehran

and its criticism of Egypt’s human rights conduct.

The White House spokesman said: “I think in many ways, this is the heart of the Arab world.” The address is intended for the entire Muslim world, not simply Arab Muslims. It is part of Mr.

Obama’s continuing effort to reach out to Muslims, as he did in a speech he gave in Turkey last month.

Two high-ranking US delegations which visited Cairo in the last ten days failed to convince Mubarak that the US president’s plans to engage Iran in diplomacy was not at the expense of Arab interests.

After Germany, Obama will then join commemorations marking the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy as guest of President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Almost a week after Israeli prime minister held his first talks with US president Barack Obama at the White House, last Tuesday, May 18, some of the fog obscuring their content is finally beginning to clear.

The White House was forced to rebut a major misapprehension, that the US president would use his June 4 speech in Cairo to launch a new Middle East peace plan.

There never was such a plan, DEBKAfile’s Washington sources confirm. Once that misapprehension was removed, some of the subjects really discussed by the two leaders hoved into sight – or proved false.

For instance, Obama did not demand the repartition of Jerusalem; neither was he keen to pursue the Palest inian issue

at all at this time. Most of all, he was after space to engage in negotiation with Tehran without the threat of a surprise Israeli military strike against Iran’s nuclear sites hanging over the talks.

Who then had an interest in running the false hare of an Obama Middle East plan

?

1. At some point, the White House preferred unclarity to an admission that the president had backed away from his pressure on Israel to negotiate a two-state peace accord with the Palestinians. In fact, Obama was persuaded by his awareness that Palestinian divisions are too profound to hope for results. The “two-state” formula is applicable in the foreseeable future only to the Palestinians – Hamas which rules the Gaza Strip and Fatah which dominates the West Bank Palestinian Authority.

For now, the US president has decided practically that it would be better to stick to the less ambitious goals of developing the West Bank economy, its governing institutions and a security apparatus, exactly as advised by Netanyahu and special Middle East Quartet envoy former UK prime minister Tony Blair.

If some day Tehran and Damascus decide to join forces with Washington – a diminishing prospect at present – the US president can go back to promoting a united Palestinian state alongside Israel.

But Obama is keen on developing an expanded road map to bring moderate Arab governments into the peace process with Israel and start introducing normal relations on a regional level.

It may be assumed that the US president and Israeli prime minister did not exhaust this burning issue in their initial, ice-breaking conversation and they will remain in touch. Furthermore, these moves remain to be hammered out in Washington and in follow-up talks with the Israelis. Meanwhile, Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, a pivotal figure in this initiative, is rumored to be very ill after cancelling his visit to Washington.

2. Jordan’s Abdullah II’s advisers at court were responsible for planting the tale of a new Obama peace initiative to be purportedly unveiled on June 4. Its provisions, such as making Jerusalem the twin Palestinian-Israeli capital, were to be imposed on Israel.

This fairy story was picked up by Israel’s often anti-Netanyahu media, although its source was dubious – the London-based Arabic al Quds al-Arabi, which is a platform for radical Muslim quarters such as Hamas. The fiction gained wings from the lack of authoritative information on the content of the face-to-face conversation between Obama and Netanyahu last Tuesday, May 18.

This forced White House spokesman Robert Gibbs to produce a damper. Friday, May 22, Gibbs said “I know there has been some conjecture that included in this speech will be some detailed comprehensive Mideast peace plan, and it is not the intention nor was it ever the intention of this speech.”

He made it clear that Obama’s words would deal with Washington’s relations with the Muslim world.

3. The Israeli prime minister himself felt the need to keep hidden his concession of a six-month time limit for Washington’s dialogue with Tehran. On the one hand, he persuaded Obama for the first time to accept a time limit for those talks; on the other, it is longer than Israel thinks safe,

DEBKAfile’s Washington sources note that Netanyahu convinced the president to agree to an Iranian deadline while standing by his refusal to endorse Obama’s “two state” solution of the Palestinian issue in return.

Still, he knew the deadline would be hard to sell at home, especially after Iran successfully test-fired its first accurate long-range surface to surface missile while he was still in Washington.

Obama and Netanyahu put a couple of safety valves put in place.

One of the two joint working groups they set up, headed by US national security adviser James Jones, will meet regularly to keep track of progress of the bilateral US-Iranian negotiations and report back to the White House and Jerusalem.

(The second team, headed by Middle East envoy George Mitchell, will be in charge of the Palestinian issue.)

It stands to reason that the US president and Israeli prime minister did not exhaust this burning issue in their initial, ice-breaking conversation and will remain in touch.

But Netanyahu may find it hard to explain why he promised no Israeli surprise attacks against Iran for six months – even though major disruptions loom: Lebanon’s pro-Western government may be overthrown by its June 7 election or thereafter, Iranian long-range missiles introduced to the Gaza Strip, Mahmoud Abbas’ new Palestinian government in Ramallah collapse, and Tehran will continue its shock tactics.

To shift the focus from his consent to US diplomacy with Iran, Netanyahu spoke passionately about Jerusalem upon his return although, according to our sources, its status was not under assault at his White House talks.

“The flag that flies over the Kotel is the Israeli flag… Our holy places, the Temple Mount — will remain under Israeli sovereignty forever,” he told yeshiva students.

And “Jerusalem was always ours, will always be ours, and will never again be divided,” he vowed at the annual Jerusalem Day state ceremony on Ammunition Hill, Jerusalem, honoring the soldiers who fell in the Six-Day War in 1967.

? Don’t forget what happened in Gaza – the unjust bombing of the Palestinians in Gaza…”

Interviewer: “The recent aggression…”

Jehan Al-Sadat: “…which broke our hearts… Egypt could have been subjected to the same thing, if it did not have peace with Israel.

“If not for the peace signed by Anwar Al-Sadat, Israel would have bombed a school here, a hospital there in Egypt. Egypt would have been subjected to the same aggression as Gaza, if Anwar Sadat had not protected Egypt from this.

“Over the past 30 years – look how many Palestinians have been killed, look how many homes have been destroyed in Gaza and elsewhere, look what m ateri

al damage they have suffered. If they had listened to Anwar Al-Sadat, and had reached an agreement with Israel, all of this could have been prevented.

“Many people opposed the Camp David Accords, but believe me, many of them sent me letters, and told me, during dinner parties and meetings, that although they had been against Camp David and Anwar Al-Sadat, they now consider him to have been ahead of his time. Interviewer: “Is it true, as has been said, that at one point, before the [1952] revolution, Al-Sadat was a member of [the Muslim Brotherhood] – especially since during his presidency, the Muslim Brotherhood enjoyed a ‘honeymoon period?’

Jehan Al-Sadat: “Yes, yes.”

Interviewer: “Was he really a member of the Muslim Brotherhood?”

Jehan Al-Sadat: “Yes, yes, yes. In fact, as a child, I believed strongly in the Muslim Brotherhood.

They were established in Al-Roudha.

Al-Hudhaybi lived in Al-Roudha. These young men had moral values, faith, and ideals.

I took pride in them to the point that I would collect what little money I could from my family and friends, and I would go to the place of Al-Hudhaybi, who lived practically next door, and I would knock on the door and give him the envelope.

Of course, this was peanuts to him.

He would look at me, just a girl, and would laugh and pat me on the shoulder.

He would thank me, and I would be happy, because I was sure I had done a great patriotic act, by helping the Muslim Brotherhood.

“I still believe there are many moderates and rational people among them, who want to change the image caused by a wing of terror and murder, which arose all of a sudden among them, and which is rejected by everybody. Many among the Muslim Brotherhood have also rejected this fanatic wing. Allah willing, our Lord will guide them to accept the country’s regime.”

The cruel stark impossibility of a 2-State Solution with the Palestinians is recognized by many realists, but ignored by the author of “Dreams of My Father.” As a realist, I am certain the 2-State Solution will not work.

As a theologian, I am positive that a No-State Solution or Any-State Solution will work, because only the Second Advent of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, will bring peace to the turbulent Middle East, and in will be brought in with a Rod of Iron.

The 2007 Pew Global Attitudes Project found that by 77% to 16%, Palestinians don’t believe they can live side-by-side with Israel, while by 61% to 31%, Israelis do believe they can live side-by-side with a Palestinian state.

So long as fewer than 2 in 10 Arabs, both Palestinian and all others, believe in Israel’s right to exist as a nation with a Jewish majority, there can be no successful peace based on a two-state solution.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , 28 August 1749 – 22 March 1832) was a German writer and according to George Eliot, “Germany’s greatest man of letters Goethe’s works span the fields of poetry, drama, literature, theology, philosophy, humanism and science.

Goethe’s magnum opus, lauded as one of the peaks of world literature, is the two-part drama Faust.

Goethe’s influence spread across Europe, and for the next century his works were a major source of inspiration in music, drama, poetry and philosophy. Goethe is considered by many to be the most important writer in the German language and one of the most important thinkers in Western culture as well.

The ways and philosophy of Barrack Obama are the character of Faust developed by Goethe. Obama is a classic example of the philosophy put into action. It does have a religious connotation in that Faust portrays the lifestyle of a man who puts his confidence in himself as able to manipulate people to accomplish his goals. I have never seen anyone who is so completely Faustian in his personality and actions. In religion he would exemplify a man totally consumed by his belief in salvation by his own ability. The following paragraph quote is from “The Drama in History, Literature and Influence on Civilization,” Volume 11, Editor Alfred Bates, 1906, discusses Goethe’s Faust.

Faustian Society

A Faustian Society comes down to a few essential ideas. These societies are part of a new civilization and a new period in history, which can be referred to as Faustian (with apologies to Spengler) because of its quest for power.

At its core, this new Faustian age and civilization believes in the self and the self’s right and ability to control the conditions of its own existence. It exalts reason, but it is practical or “instrumental” reason, which is seen as a tool that humanity can use to manipulate the world.

Faustian society includes at least four elements that define the individual’s changing relationship to the world of limitation:

* It uses science and technology to overcome the limits of the physical world.

* It brings together high technology and art to create simulations that can be used as substitutes for what can’t be extracted from the physical world. The most important of these simulations are imitation realities, which provide people with experiences not available in the rest of life.

* It adheres to an aesthetic philosophy, which sees the acting out of fantasies that express our fears and desires, as a form of art, entertainment and liberation.

* It views matter, life, culture and mind as deceptive appearances, which makes them simulations or something similar to simulations.

In addition, Faustian societies are characterized by the pervasive use of deceptive simulations to manipulate large numbers of people.

Put in terms that were first referred to on an earlier page, Faustian society is using the powers of rationality and the ego – of logic, science and technology — to build a perfect world that answers to our desires. The goal is to create a new kind of person: a sovereign self, in control of its environment, including its own biology and mind.

In order to achieve this goal, it is trying to make the world as transparent as possible, so everything can be seen and understood. It wants to hold all existence up to an x-ray, because what is known can be controlled. This effort to bring about transparency and control, or knowledge and power, in the service of real human needs and boundless human desires, summarizes much of what Faustian society is about.

We can see intimations of the world as Faustian society would re-create it in today’s simulated and automated environments

and in some of the images of life conveyed by television and movies. These are early efforts to build and portray perfect worlds and perfect selves in which nothing is left to chance.

But we can also see in some of these same simulations, portrayals of the dangers that Faustian society poses to our relation to the world of limitation, including the danger that we might lose interest in “reality”; devalue it; undermine it, or lose the ability to distinguish reality from illusion.

Faustian society is already the dominant force in the contemporary world. Its power centers are the high-technology urban areas of America, particularly in the Northeast and West Coast, and the urban centers of Western Europe and Japan. The world’s business, scientific and cultural “elites,” many of whom live in these regions, are its creators, administrators and exemplars. They have enormous power to shape its culture, in the near-term.

When seen from a broader perspective, they begin to look like the vehicles of humanity’s desire to bring about a perfect world, as they produce forms of technology and representation that answer to their audience’s needs and desires.

But many groups and regions haven’t made the transition to this new kind of society; others are in opposition to it. In particular, what remains of the world’s religious traditionalists, have been engaged in a reaction against many (although not all) of these changes.

Despite their considerable differences with each other, all view the world as the work of a creator, who imposed not only material conditions on existence, but a moral code that limits thought and action, and subordinates creature to creator. All see themselves as defending religion, traditional culture and morality against the secularism, the moral and cultural relativism, and the philosophy of the self, fantasy, pleasure, transgression and cultural experimentation of Faustian society.

A Faustian Bargain

Sooner or later it was bound to happen. The strident insistence by Israeli leaders that nuclear weapons in the hands of Iran represented the threat of another Holocaust, and that anything and everything would have to be done to prevent them from attaining a nuclear capability, brought forth what should have been expected. America presented the new Israeli leadership with an offer they could not refuse: Agree to the two-state solution and America will take care of the Iranian threat.

It sounds crazy, and it is crazy, but there it is.

The gullible swallow it hook, line and sinker, as do those who want to believe that unless a Palestinian state is established, Israel will go under. Here is the answer to their dreams: a secure Israel and a Palestinian state all in one.

Who is offering Israel this Faustian bargain?

Nobody in an official capacity in Washington. Yet the rumors are flying across the Atlantic that this is what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu can expect in Washington, so he better prepare himself to wrestle with this dilemma. It is only to be expected that these rumors are echoed in Israel by those who are rubbing their hands in glee in the expectation that Netanyahu now won’t be able to refuse the magic formula – two states for two peoples – which he would not say when Tzipi Livni tried to squeeze it out of him as her condition for entering the coalition.

That this proposition is no more than the fantasy of some deranged mind, or more likely a deliberately leaked rumor in an attempt to corner the Israeli prime minister, should be obvious to any clear-thinking person. A nuclear Iran represents a major problem for the United States, regardless of the threat it may pose to Israel. Nothing of similar magnitude faces the U.S. president at this time. To imagine that the United States will decide to deal or not deal with this problem depending on Israel’s position on the Palestinian issue is absurd. The U.S. will have to bite that bullet one way or another.

The deliberately leaked rumors before the visit of an Israeli leader to Washington are already old hat. They are part of a campaign intended to soften him up and build pressure in the local political scene, to make him more pliable when he meets the president. A lesson learned over the years by Israeli leaders who have visited Washington is to ignore these tactics and remain firm in presenting positions that are in Israel’s best interest.

The reality is that the two-state solution

is a fantasy, impossible to implement now or in the foreseeable future.

It will be impossible until Palestinian terror has been defeated, and until then, there can be no progress toward peace in the area.

On the other hand, Israeli spokesmen’s persistent emphasis on the Iranian nuclear threat is of little use and may even be counterproductive.

There is nothing new that Netanyahu can tell President Barack Obama about Iran’ s drive to attain nuclear weapon

s. Obama has been given this information by his staff. The frequent intelligence exchanges between the United States and Israel have provided him with the intelligence available in Israel. All of the arguments for and against military action by the U.S. have already been presented to him numerous times by his advisers, as well as the chances of achieving progress through diplomatic activity and economic sanctions imposed on Iran.

He has heard it all, and he will have to decide on the course of action he considers most appropriate for protecting America’s interests.

Israel has nothing to gain and much to lose if the impression is created in the United States that Israel is trying to drag America into a military “adventure” in Iran. That is liable to cause long-term damage to the relationship between the U.S. and Israel.

In any case, the White House’s dec ision will not depend on arguments voiced by Israeli spokesmen, so it

is best to leave that subject alone, unless our opinion is solicited.

‘Israel will have to take on Iran alone once Obama’s efforts fail’

Israel will be forced to take on Iran’s contentious nuclear program alone once U.S. President Barack Obama’s overture for dialogue with Tehran fails, an Israeli official said on Tuesday.

The official was quoted by Channel 10 as saying that Obama’s insistence on engagement with Iran would force Israel to make a “difficult decision” on the matter by the end of 2009.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. lawmakers said earlier Tuesday that Israel and the United States had agreed that Iran must not be allowed to continue its contentious nuclear program.

“I was assured by President [Barack] Obama [on Monday] that the U.S. is committed to preventing that from happening,” Netanyahu said after a day of talks with several U.S. lawmakers, including prominent Jewish members of Congress.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican Minority Leader John Boehner told reporters following their meeting with Netanyahu that they are committed to ensuring Iran is unable to develop a nuclear weapon.

“It is important for all of us to work together to be sure that Iran does not develop a weapon of mass destruction,” Pelosi said after emerging from the meeting with Netanyahu.

Netanyahu said a nuclear-armed Iran would post a threat to Arab countries in the region as well

as the United States, warning Tehran could provide terrorists with a nuclear device.

“The consequences could be unimaginable,” Netanyahu told Pelosi and Boehner.

Obama said Monday after his first official talks with Netanyahu that the U.S. would not have talks forever on stopping Iran’s enrichment of uranium.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Tuesday said that Israel’s public backing of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would not cause Iran to abandon it’s nuclear program.

Barak’s comments came amid mounting international pressure on Netanyahu to declare support for a Palestinian state, which the prime minister has refrained from doing.

Barak added that Israel was not ruling out any course of action against Iran’s nuclear program, and that he advised other countries to do the same.

“Israel is not taking any option off the table and we recommend others not to take options off the table,” he said.

The statement was apparently directed toward the United States, which has embarked on a new diplomatic policy toward the Islamic Republic under President Barak Obama.

In comments published Sunday, Obama said he understood Israel’s fears over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, but added that he wanted to offer t

he country an opportunity to align itself with international norms and international rules.

Barak said he had spoken with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had updated him on his meeting with Obama on Monday.

“I think that we have begun a serious dialogue with the Americans,” he said. “It will take time and it will encompass all of the subjects.”

Fears in Israel of cooling US ties

Jerusalem – The deep differences exposed during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s first meeting with US President Barack Obama on Tuesday have stoked fears in Israel of cooling ties with its main ally.

“Agreed to disagree,” was the headline in the mass-circulation Yediot Aharonot a day after the key Washington talks laid bare the discord on Middle East peacemaking and Iran.

In the weeks preceding the two leaders’ first official meeting, Israeli newspapers had been filled with alarmist editorials that warned of a stark change of course in US policy towards Israel under Obama.

Following the Oval Office encounter, some warned that the change of tone in Washington boded ill for the special relationship that Israel has enjoyed with its main backer over the years.

“A new era has begun in relations between Israel and the United States,” said Eytan Gilboa, a political science professor at Bar-Ilan University.

An editorial in the popular Ynet website wrote: “The honeymoon that lasted for dozens of years has apparently reached an end, and now, only now, will the normal life of the American-Israeli couple get under way.”

“Bibi’s from Mars, Obama’s from Venus,” said another editorial in Ynet.

In comments after their meeting, which included a 90-minute one-on-one session, Obama repeatedly underlined Washington’s support for the creation of a Palestinian state and said Israeli settlement activities “have to be stopped”.

“There wasn’t a single blister that Obama didn’t step on,” wrote Israel’s second largest daily, Maariv.

Netanyahu again avoided committing to the two-state solution or pledging to stop settlement activity, which his largely right-wing cabinet supports.

In contrast to his predecessor George Bush, who was considered extremely sympathetic to Israel, Obama has vowed to pursue the peace process vigorously and has assembled a team experienced in the tricky task of peacemaking in the volatile region.

Obama’s background has also set him apart from his predecessors vis a vis Israel, analysts say.

He has adopted a new approach that could mean a downgrading of sorts to the Jewish state’s privileged position in US policy, they say.

“The new American president does not have a particular sentiment towards Israel,” Gilboa said. “He is defending his interests and his global approach to the Middle East, which includes a rapprochement with the Arab world at the expense of privileged relations with Israel.

“If Netanyahu persists in his positions, there is a potential risk of confrontation that will translate into an enormous price for Israel,” he said.

Akiva Eldar, a veteran journalist with the liberal Haaretz daily, wrote: “I have never seen an official meeting in Washington that ended with so many differences being publicly expressed.”

Others dismiss the alarmist tone, however, saying that despite their differences the United States and Israel remain strategic allies.

“For Israel, the Obama era has nothing to do with that of his predecessor George W. Bush, but the historical American-Israeli ties, profound and numerous, cannot be put into question,” said Gerald Steinberg, also a political science professor at Bar-Ilan University.

“We have to wait for the speech that Obama will give on June 4 in Cairo on his regional peace approach, but he has agreed with Netanyahu to admit to their differences in order to iron them out, and there is no question of pressure on Israel.”
