Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , 28 August 1749 – 22 March 1832) was a German writer and according to George Eliot, “Germany’s greatest man of letters Goethe’s works span the fields of poetry, drama, literature, theology, philosophy, humanism and science.
Goethe’s magnum opus, lauded as one of the peaks of world literature, is the two-part drama Faust.
Goethe’s influence spread across Europe, and for the next century his works were a major source of inspiration in music, drama, poetry and philosophy. Goethe is considered by many to be the most important writer in the German language and one of the most important thinkers in Western culture as well.
The ways and philosophy of Barrack Obama are the character of Faust developed by Goethe. Obama is a classic example of the philosophy put into action. It does have a religious connotation in that Faust portrays the lifestyle of a man who puts his confidence in himself as able to manipulate people to accomplish his goals. I have never seen anyone who is so completely Faustian in his personality and actions. In religion he would exemplify a man totally consumed by his belief in salvation by his own ability. The following paragraph quote is from “The Drama in History, Literature and Influence on Civilization,” Volume 11, Editor Alfred Bates, 1906, discusses Goethe’s Faust.
“[Faust is not intended to resemble Goethe in all points, but he represents Goethe’s views in all great questions–in the idea that man is meant to struggle, in the conviction of the salvation to be found in hard service, in the maxim which Faust utters when dying, as the last conclusion of wisdom: “He alone deserves liberty, like life, who daily must win it.” Herein he was also in harmony with Schiller, whose Tell declares: “I only really enjoy my life when I win it every day afresh.” Both in Wilhelm Meister and in Faust Goethe prizes activity for the common good more highly than the aesthetic and literary interests. Neither the poet, nor the actor, nor the speculative scholar, he seems to think, can attain in their own spheres to such lofty discernment and to such peace of conviction as the man of action.]”

Faustian Society
A Faustian Society comes down to a few essential ideas. These societies are part of a new civilization and a new period in history, which can be referred to as Faustian (with apologies to Spengler) because of its quest for power.
At its core, this new Faustian age and civilization believes in the self and the self’s right and ability to control the conditions of its own existence. It exalts reason, but it is practical or “instrumental” reason, which is seen as a tool that humanity can use to manipulate the world.
Faustian society includes at least four elements that define the individual’s changing relationship to the world of limitation:
* It uses science and technology to overcome the limits of the physical world.
* It brings together high technology and art to create simulations that can be used as substitutes for what can’t be extracted from the physical world. The most important of these simulations are imitation realities, which provide people with experiences not available in the rest of life.
* It adheres to an aesthetic philosophy, which sees the acting out of fantasies that express our fears and desires, as a form of art, entertainment and liberation.
* It views matter, life, culture and mind as deceptive appearances, which makes them simulations or something similar to simulations.
In addition, Faustian societies are characterized by the pervasive use of deceptive simulations to manipulate large numbers of people.
Put in terms that were first referred to on an earlier page, Faustian society is using the powers of rationality and the ego – of logic, science and technology — to build a perfect world that answers to our desires. The goal is to create a new kind of person: a sovereign self, in control of its environment, including its own biology and mind.
In order to achieve this goal, it is trying to make the world as transparent as possible, so everything can be seen and understood. It wants to hold all existence up to an x-ray, because what is known can be controlled. This effort to bring about transparency and control, or knowledge and power, in the service of real human needs and boundless human desires, summarizes much of what Faustian society is about.
We can see intimations of the world as Faustian society would re-create it in today’s simulated and automated environments
and in some of the images of life conveyed by television and movies. These are early efforts to build and portray perfect worlds and perfect selves in which nothing is left to chance.
But we can also see in some of these same simulations, portrayals of the dangers that Faustian society poses to our relation to the world of limitation, including the danger that we might lose interest in “reality”; devalue it; undermine it, or lose the ability to distinguish reality from illusion.
Faustian society is already the dominant force in the contemporary world. Its power centers are the high-technology urban areas of America, particularly in the Northeast and West Coast, and the urban centers of Western Europe and Japan. The world’s business, scientific and cultural “elites,” many of whom live in these regions, are its creators, administrators and exemplars. They have enormous power to shape its culture, in the near-term.
When seen from a broader perspective, they begin to look like the vehicles of humanity’s desire to bring about a perfect world, as they produce forms of technology and representation that answer to their audience’s needs and desires.
But many groups and regions haven’t made the transition to this new kind of society; others are in opposition to it. In particular, what remains of the world’s religious traditionalists, have been engaged in a reaction against many (although not all) of these changes.
Despite their considerable differences with each other, all view the world as the work of a creator, who imposed not only material conditions on existence, but a moral code that limits thought and action, and subordinates creature to creator. All see themselves as defending religion, traditional culture and morality against the secularism, the moral and cultural relativism, and the philosophy of the self, fantasy, pleasure, transgression and cultural experimentation of Faustian society.

A Faustian Bargain

Sooner or later it was bound to happen. The strident insistence by Israeli leaders that nuclear weapons in the hands of Iran represented the threat of another Holocaust, and that anything and everything would have to be done to prevent them from attaining a nuclear capability, brought forth what should have been expected. America presented the new Israeli leadership with an offer they could not refuse: Agree to the two-state solution and America will take care of the Iranian threat.
It sounds crazy, and it is crazy, but there it is.
The gullible swallow it hook, line and sinker, as do those who want to believe that unless a Palestinian state is established, Israel will go under. Here is the answer to their dreams: a secure Israel and a Palestinian state all in one.
Who is offering Israel this Faustian bargain?
Nobody in an official capacity in Washington. Yet the rumors are flying across the Atlantic that this is what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu can expect in Washington, so he better prepare himself to wrestle with this dilemma. It is only to be expected that these rumors are echoed in Israel by those who are rubbing their hands in glee in the expectation that Netanyahu now won’t be able to refuse the magic formula – two states for two peoples – which he would not say when Tzipi Livni tried to squeeze it out of him as her condition for entering the coalition.
That this proposition is no more than the fantasy of some deranged mind, or more likely a deliberately leaked rumor in an attempt to corner the Israeli prime minister, should be obvious to any clear-thinking person. A nuclear Iran represents a major problem for the United States, regardless of the threat it may pose to Israel. Nothing of similar magnitude faces the U.S. president at this time. To imagine that the United States will decide to deal or not deal with this problem depending on Israel’s position on the Palestinian issue is absurd. The U.S. will have to bite that bullet one way or another.
The deliberately leaked rumors before the visit of an Israeli leader to Washington are already old hat. They are part of a campaign intended to soften him up and build pressure in the local political scene, to make him more pliable when he meets the president. A lesson learned over the years by Israeli leaders who have visited Washington is to ignore these tactics and remain firm in presenting positions that are in Israel’s best interest.
The reality is that the two-state solution
is a fantasy, impossible to implement now or in the foreseeable future.
It will be impossible until Palestinian terror has been defeated, and until then, there can be no progress toward peace in the area.
On the other hand, Israeli spokesmen’s persistent emphasis on the Iranian nuclear threat is of little use and may even be counterproductive.
There is nothing new that Netanyahu can tell President Barack Obama about Iran’ s drive to attain nuclear weapon
s. Obama has been given this information by his staff. The frequent intelligence exchanges between the United States and Israel have provided him with the intelligence available in Israel. All of the arguments for and against military action by the U.S. have already been presented to him numerous times by his advisers, as well as the chances of achieving progress through diplomatic activity and economic sanctions imposed on Iran.
He has heard it all, and he will have to decide on the course of action he considers most appropriate for protecting America’s interests.
Israel has nothing to gain and much to lose if the impression is created in the United States that Israel is trying to drag America into a military “adventure” in Iran. That is liable to cause long-term damage to the relationship between the U.S. and Israel.
In any case, the White House’s dec ision will not depend on arguments voiced by Israeli spokesmen, so it
is best to leave that subject alone, unless our opinion is solicited.
