‘Israel will have to take on Iran alone once Obama’s efforts fail’

Israel will be forced to take on Iran’s contentious nuclear program alone once U.S. President Barack Obama’s overture for dialogue with Tehran fails, an Israeli official said on Tuesday.
The official was quoted by Channel 10 as saying that Obama’s insistence on engagement with Iran would force Israel to make a “difficult decision” on the matter by the end of 2009.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. lawmakers said earlier Tuesday that Israel and the United States had agreed that Iran must not be allowed to continue its contentious nuclear program.
“I was assured by President [Barack] Obama [on Monday] that the U.S. is committed to preventing that from happening,” Netanyahu said after a day of talks with several U.S. lawmakers, including prominent Jewish members of Congress.
Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican Minority Leader John Boehner told reporters following their meeting with Netanyahu that they are committed to ensuring Iran is unable to develop a nuclear weapon.
“It is important for all of us to work together to be sure that Iran does not develop a weapon of mass destruction,” Pelosi said after emerging from the meeting with Netanyahu.
Netanyahu said a nuclear-armed Iran would post a threat to Arab countries in the region as well
as the United States, warning Tehran could provide terrorists with a nuclear device.
“The consequences could be unimaginable,” Netanyahu told Pelosi and Boehner.
Obama said Monday after his first official talks with Netanyahu that the U.S. would not have talks forever on stopping Iran’s enrichment of uranium.
Meanwhile, Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Tuesday said that Israel’s public backing of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would not cause Iran to abandon it’s nuclear program.
“These… words will not cause Iran to stop its centrifuges. Israel has already said in the past ‘two states for two peoples’ and this didn’t cause the Palestinians to fall into our arms and reach all the tough decisions that are required,” s aid B
arak during a tour of the Israel Defense Forces Central Command.
Barak’s comments came amid mounting international pressure on Netanyahu to declare support for a Palestinian state, which the prime minister has refrained from doing.
Barak added that Israel was not ruling out any course of action against Iran’s nuclear program, and that he advised other countries to do the same.
“Israel is not taking any option off the table and we recommend others not to take options off the table,” he said.
The statement was apparently directed toward the United States, which has embarked on a new diplomatic policy toward the Islamic Republic under President Barak Obama.
In comments published Sunday, Obama said he understood Israel’s fears over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, but added that he wanted to offer t
he country an opportunity to align itself with international norms and international rules.
Barak said he had spoken with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had updated him on his meeting with Obama on Monday.
“I think that we have begun a serious dialogue with the Americans,” he said. “It will take time and it will encompass all of the subjects.”

Fears in Israel of cooling US ties
Jerusalem – The deep differences exposed during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s first meeting with US President Barack Obama on Tuesday have stoked fears in Israel of cooling ties with its main ally.
“Agreed to disagree,” was the headline in the mass-circulation Yediot Aharonot a day after the key Washington talks laid bare the discord on Middle East peacemaking and Iran.
In the weeks preceding the two leaders’ first official meeting, Israeli newspapers had been filled with alarmist editorials that warned of a stark change of course in US policy towards Israel under Obama.
Following the Oval Office encounter, some warned that the change of tone in Washington boded ill for the special relationship that Israel has enjoyed with its main backer over the years.
“A new era has begun in relations between Israel and the United States,” said Eytan Gilboa, a political science professor at Bar-Ilan University.
An editorial in the popular Ynet website wrote: “The honeymoon that lasted for dozens of years has apparently reached an end, and now, only now, will the normal life of the American-Israeli couple get under way.”
“Bibi’s from Mars, Obama’s from Venus,” said another editorial in Ynet.
In comments after their meeting, which included a 90-minute one-on-one session, Obama repeatedly underlined Washington’s support for the creation of a Palestinian state and said Israeli settlement activities “have to be stopped”.
“There wasn’t a single blister that Obama didn’t step on,” wrote Israel’s second largest daily, Maariv.
Netanyahu again avoided committing to the two-state solution or pledging to stop settlement activity, which his largely right-wing cabinet supports.
In contrast to his predecessor George Bush, who was considered extremely sympathetic to Israel, Obama has vowed to pursue the peace process vigorously and has assembled a team experienced in the tricky task of peacemaking in the volatile region.
Obama’s background has also set him apart from his predecessors vis a vis Israel, analysts say.
He has adopted a new approach that could mean a downgrading of sorts to the Jewish state’s privileged position in US policy, they say.
“The new American president does not have a particular sentiment towards Israel,” Gilboa said. “He is defending his interests and his global approach to the Middle East, which includes a rapprochement with the Arab world at the expense of privileged relations with Israel.
“If Netanyahu persists in his positions, there is a potential risk of confrontation that will translate into an enormous price for Israel,” he said.
Akiva Eldar, a veteran journalist with the liberal Haaretz daily, wrote: “I have never seen an official meeting in Washington that ended with so many differences being publicly expressed.”
Others dismiss the alarmist tone, however, saying that despite their differences the United States and Israel remain strategic allies.
“For Israel, the Obama era has nothing to do with that of his predecessor George W. Bush, but the historical American-Israeli ties, profound and numerous, cannot be put into question,” said Gerald Steinberg, also a political science professor at Bar-Ilan University.
“We have to wait for the speech that Obama will give on June 4 in Cairo on his regional peace approach, but he has agreed with Netanyahu to admit to their differences in order to iron them out, and there is no question of pressure on Israel.”
