Syrian spillover leaves five dead along border with Lebanon

Five killed in border town as Syrian conflict continues to take toll in Lebanon.

‘Hezbollah is the entire problem,’ local mayor said.

Five people were killed in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Friday in fighting between supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad, security and medical sources said.

Tripoli, like much of Lebanon, is divided along sectarian lines and is only 30 miles (50 km) from the Syrian border. Its majority Sunni Muslims, who back the Syrian rebels, often clash with the minority from Assad’s Alawite sect.

Two gunmen were wounded in overnight clashes between fighters from the Sunni district of Bab al-Tabbaneh and the Alawite neighborhood of Jebel Mohsen and died of their wounds, the sources said. Three civilians, including an elderly man, were shot dead by snipers on Friday, they said. Eleven others were wounded.

Lebanon’s population is deeply divided over the Syrian war. Shi’ite militant and political movement Hezbollah and its allies support Assad while many of the country’s Sunnis back the revolt.

Tripoli’s Sunnis and Alawites have clashed sporadically for decades but the Syrian conflict has worsened tensions, with each side accusing the other of using the city as a base for sending fighters and weapons in and out of Syria.

The problem is felt not only in Tripoli but also from the Lebanese border town of Arsal. The town is predominantly Sunni Muslim and the neighboring town of al-Labwa is Shi’ite. Their fate shows just how dangerous the war in Syria has become for Lebanon as it still recovers from its own civil conflict.

Over the past three years, tens of thousands of Syrian refugees have more than tripled the population of Arsal.

Nowadays in its hilly streets, residents and refugees curse Hezbollah, the powerful Lebanese Shi’ite political and military movement whose fighters helped President Bashar Assad seize the town of Yabroud across the border this week.

Yet just 5 km (3 miles) down the hill in Shi’ite al-Labwa, Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah’s face beams from billboards as residents denounce radical Islamists they say locals are letting use Arsal as a base to attack Shi’ites.

The towns have become a nerve centre of communal conflict in the country – a flare-up in tensions this week quickly set off protests across Lebanon in which at least one person died.

The two sides agree on little except that the situation is volatile, that the other side is to blame, and that the Lebanese army is not up to the task of restoring order.

“Hezbollah is the entire problem,” Arsal’s mayor Ali al-Hujeiri said in an interview this week.

“When one of their people gets martyred in Syria – we should only speak good of the dead, so we’ll say ‘martyr,’ no matter who he was – when they lose in Syria, they make problems on the road from al-Labwa.”

Hujeiri himself is wanted by the Lebanese government for alleged involvement in the murder of soldiers in the Arsal area, but in a sign of the limited state authority there, he has not been arrested.

There are now more than 100,000 refugees in Arsal, Hujeiri said, compared to the original population of about 40,000. Camps of plastic tarp and wood cover nearby hillsides and fields, practically constituting parallel towns.

In Arsal itself, young bearded men on motorcycles, some decorated with images of a black-and-white Islamic battle flag affiliated with hardline Islamist groups, clog the narrow, dusty streets.

Fighting across the border this week has made the situation in Arsal even more desperate and showed how quickly Syria’s conflict can spill over and metastasize inside Lebanon.

The troubles kicked off on Sunday, when Syrian government forces backed by Hezbollah seized Yabroud, about 15 km from the border, severing one of the last rebel arteries into and out of Lebanon.

Within hours, a car bomb claimed by a hardline Sunni group went off in the Lebanese town of Nabi Osmane, killing at least three people and prompting men from al-Labwa, a stronghold of Hezbollah supporters, to pile sandbags on the road running uphill from their town to Arsal.

The closure severed Arsal from its only connection to Lebanon and set off demonstrations across the country by protesters who blocked roads, burned tyres and decried what they saw as a “siege” imposed by Hezbollah to punish the Sunni town.

One man was shot dead during the demonstrations, which ended on Wednesday when the army brokered a deal for the road to be opened and troops to deploy in Arsal.

Now, the military’s Humvees and armored personnel carriers mix with battered trucks and pickups on Arsal’s streets and any Syrian rebel fighters who are in town are keeping a low profile. But few expect the calm to last.

“We all love the army here and support it fully,” said one 56-year-old resident named Mohamed. “But the army – the army is in too deep. The army isn’t able to fulfill the role it needs to fulfill.”

US President Barack Obama on Monday urged Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to make tough decisions and take risks for peace with Israel, saying he hoped to see progress in US-brokered negotiations in coming weeks.

The US leader was seeking to secure Abbas’s agreement on a US framework to extend peace talks, which have so far lasted seven months but not made tangible progress, past an end-of April deadline.

“We’re going to have to take some tough political decisions and risks if we’re to move it forward,” Obama said at the start of his Oval Office meeting with the Palestinian leader. “My hope is that we can continue to see progress in the coming days and weeks.”

“As I said to Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu when he was here just a few weeks ago, I believe that now is the time …. to embrace this opportunity,” Obama added. The US president met with the Israeli premier two weeks ago in Washington.

Abbas responded that he considers this a historic opportunity and he thanked Obama for economic and political support.

Obama said everyone understands what the contours of a peace deal look like – territory based on lands prior to their Israeli capture in 1967, with “mutually agreed upon swaps,” that ensure the security of Israel and a sovereign state for Palestinians.

He praised Abbas as a leader who “has consistently renounced violence, has consistently sought a diplomatic and peaceful solution that allows for two states, side by side in peace and security – a state that allows for the dignity and sovereignty of the Palestinian people and a state that allows for Israelis to feel secure and at peace with their neighbors.”

Abbas, for his part, pressed for Netanyahu to go ahead with the scheduled release of a final group of Palestinian prisoners by the end of March.

“We are hopeful that the fourth batch will be released by the 29th of March because this would give a very solid impression about the seriousness of the Israelis on the peace process,” he said.

Israeli ministers said last week that they would have difficulty approving the release if agreement was not reached to extend the peace talks.

Israel committed to the release of 104 Palestinian prisoners in four tranches when talks were launched in July. It has so far released 78 of those in three batches, with Palestinians demanding the fourth – scheduled for later this month – also include Israeli-Arabs.

While Abbas did not directly address the Israeli government’s demand for the Palestinians to recognize Israel as a “Jewish state,” he did note, through a translator, that the Palestinians had recognized Israel’s legitimacy in 1988 and in “1993 we recognized the state of Israel.”

Last week, however, Abbas has insisted that he will not agree to demand to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. “I am 79 years old and am not ready to end my life with treason,” he said.

Following the Oval Office meeting, Obama invited Abbas for a work lunch in the cabinet room. Abbas will be joined by chief PLO negotiator Saeb Erekat, Mohammad Shtayyeh, spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh and the PLO Ambassador to Washington Maen Areikat.

On the American side of the table, Obama will be joined by US Secretary of State John Kerry, special American envoy to the talks Martin Indyk and Phil Gordon, the president’s Middle East adviser in the National Security Staff.

While the nations on earth are angry because of the seven vials of wrath that are being poured out following the blowing of the seventh trumpet, the time of the dead, who have suddenly been resurrected for judgment before Christ, occurs in this heavenly scene of Revelation 11:18. While the saved are being judged for rewards in heaven, God’s seven vials of wrath are destroying those who are responsible for the destruction of morality on the earth. However you interpret this scripture it paints a heavenly scene where the resurrected dead are being judged for rewards in heaven, and it follows the blowing of the 7th trumpet. It has to be what Paul outlined in II Corinthians as describing Christ judging all the saved after the rapture

A seamount is a mountain rising from the ocean seafloor that does not reach to the water’s surface (sea level), and thus is not an island. Revelation 8:7 does not mix frozen hailstones with fire. It mixes large volcanic bombs (hail) and fiery blood-red lava. I believe what John witnessed was a worldwide pattern of volcanic eruptions around the edges of the tectonic plates. This verse is a perfect description of a chain of volcanic eruptions. As the volcanic bombs (hail) are thrown great distances from the caldera vents, fires are started, and as the fiery lava moves across the surface of the earth it burns up everything in its path. I challenge you to view films of an actual eruption and then not believe this is what John saw in his vision from God. (See Birth Pang 3)
Revelation 8:8,9 – And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; [9] And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

A fuller, more descriptive, rendering of part of this verse from “The Bible in Basic English,” Dutton, 1950, Cambridge Press, is as follows: “It was as if a great mountain burning with fire had been cast into the sea.” Again, I believe the great fiery mountain that suddenly appeared in the sea would naturally have been assumed to come from above to the one abruptly seeing it there (See Archives – Birth Pang 4). This was the first of thousands that will be rapidly appearing along the plate borders of the tectonic plates, building up from the ocean sea floors to break the sea surface. The resultant action of rapid heating of the ocean above these volcanic vents will discolor one-third of the sea water into a murky rusty-red maze of aquatic death by the smothering effect of the basaltic hematite oxidation, and generate an ocean wide population explosion of dinoflagellate, which will produce deadly red tide. The earthquakes and volcanic eruptions on the ocean and sea floors will produce the collapse and/or rise of segments of the ocean sea floor, and some massive sliding of parts of the coastal land mass into the oceans. And these actions will produce hundreds of Tsunami waves along those coastal areas of the world that have an abruptly rising coastline. (See Archives – Birth Pang 5) Furthermore, I assure you when the massive shifting of the tectonic plates begins, then this seismic wave action would destroy any ships in port. At any given time about two-thirds of the world’s shipping is under way on the open sea, and one-third is in port. The one third in port will be utterly destroyed by gigantic Tsunami waves like the coastal residents of the world have never seen.

An astounding pulse of destruction and growth at an underwater volcano north of New Zealand has provided a new insight into the behaviour of submarine mountains. The Monowai seamount, which lies at the intersection of the Pacific and Indo-Australian tectonic plates at the Tonga-Kermadec subduction zone, underwent one of the fastest episodes of volcano growth documented on Earth. It added about 8.75 million cubic metres of rock to its summit – a volume equal to 3500 Olympic-size swimming pools – in just five days. New lava flows raised that area by 79.1 metres, while part of the volcano’s summit collapsed by as much as 18.8 metres. Most striking was the creation of an entirely new volcanic cone. The changes were measured by crew aboard the research vessel Sonne who had set out on a routine mapping expedition in the South Pacific last autumn. Their findings have been published online in the journal Nature Geoscience. The article’s authors include GNS Science geologist and geochemist Cornel de Ronde. As they surveyed the seafloor near Monowai seamount in mid-May 2011 the crew noticed yellow-green water and gas bubbles rising above the volcano. As the ship was leaving the area, near Tonga, it went through a patch of discoloured water with a strong smell, like rotten eggs, Oxford University geologist Anthony Watts said. While the ship was surveying another area, a seismic station in the Cook Islands detected an intense five-day swarm of seismic activity and traced it to an eruption at Monowai seamount, MSNBC reported. Watts and the ship returned in early June to find that part of the Monowai volcano had collapsed and another part had grown in dramatic fashion. The new material lifting the peak was most likely magma that had erupted and hardened the week before, Watts, who led the study, said. The rapid changes at Monowai suggest that the volcano grows and collapses in dramatic pulses. Submarine volcanoes such as Monowai were much more difficult to study than volcanoes on land. Because so little was known about submarine volcanoes, it was unclear whether others also grew in rapid pulses, Watts said. Only Vesuvius and Mount St Helens have recorded larger growth rates. The paper said the speed of growth and change was “a reminder of how rapidly geological processes such as submarine landsliding and volcanism can occur”. “Any movement on the seabed has the potential to create a tsunami.
