Winners and losers of nuclear deal

Deal reached in Geneva between Iran, western powers left certain sides satisfied, others less. As Iran, US are triumphant, Israel, Saudi Arabia come up short. How does deal affect Israel’s Mideast neighbors?

Political balance sheet

Roi Simyoni

The historic deal that was struck late Saturday night between Iran and the international community was received with much joy in Tehran, great satisfaction among the biggest world powers and with great disappointment among several Middle Eastern countries.

Following are details of the political balance sheet from the nuclear deal.

The winners

 Iran

Tehran is celebrating the accord, as the international community has imposed four rounds of economic sanctions on Iran due to its nuclear program in recent years, which has substantially deteriorated the Iranian economy. The Geneva talks and eventual signing of the historic deal pulled the Islamic Republic out of its isolation and allowed it to gasp for air, at least for the next six months prior to signing a permanent deal.

As part of the agreement, Iran received sanctions relief in several fields, including metals, vehicle-aircraft parts and refined oil products (estimated at $7 billion). Most importantly, it was agreed no further sanctions will be imposed on Iran, despite Israeli requests.

Additional achievements for the Iranians: They can continue to enrich uranium, though not beyond 5%, and keep their centrifuges. However, Tehran will have a harder time to conceal its nuclear activity, as it committed as part of the agreement to allow increased supervision of its nuclear sites.

Iran‘s President

Iranian President Hassan Rohani often pitched the nuclear talks as a potential for a “win-win” outcome with the West. On one level, he got his take by securing a deal that allows Iran to maintain uranium enrichment, although at lower levels. His hard-line opponents would have pounced on anything that could have sacrificed Iran’s nuclear self-sufficiency. It was likely that Rohani could have gone that route in any event. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said giving up enrichment was a “red line” in the talks.

Diplomacy

A 15-minute phone call in late September between US President Barack Obama and Rohani did more than break the diplomatic ice that had accumulated over 34 years. It became a rallying cry for those urging to revive stalled nuclear talks and test the “new era” claims of the moderate-leaning Rohani after his election in June. The UN General Assembly also had a shining moment as the backdrop for the outreach that led to the latest round of talks in Geneva.

US

Obama received a lot of criticism after he declined to attack Syria and preferred to join forces with the Russians in an agreement that dismantled Syria’s chemical warfare arsenal. On the Iran issue, Obama also preferred to choose the diplomatic option over the military one, and for that, he brought out all the “big guns” in his administration in order to reach his target – a nuclear deal with Iran.

Diplomats in Washington are satisfied with the deal struck in Geneva because it stops the Iranian nuclear plan, and makes the Iranians obligated to let International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) agents monitor the nuclear sites more frequently. In 2009, just months after he stepped into office, Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize, before he had achieved any significant peace deals. True to today, he now has two significant accords in hand – one with Syria and the other with Iran. He has earned praises from the international community, but has also been fairly criticized, specifically from Israel and the Gulf nations.

To be fair, the credit for the Iranian deal does not just go to Obama. It is shared by other senior American diplomats, such as Secretary of State John Kerry, who travelled across continents in order to achieve the deal. Next to Kerry is Under Secretary for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman, who was the head of the American delegation in the Geneva talks.

EU

In 2012, the EU received the Nobel Peace Prize for six decades of “advancing peace, reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe.” Saturday night, the bloc of nations justified its earning of the precious prize when it signed the accord with Iran and the world powers without firing a single bullet. High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton spent the last few months in long debates and discussions with the Iranian representatives, including Mohammad Javad Zarif, the foreign minister. During all the talks, Ashton supported a diplomatic solution, and for the time being, it looks as if she has the upper hand in the negotiations, and with a permanent deal ready to be signed that will further Iran from its nuclear ambitions.

Russia

Like in Syria’s case, Moscow refused to put additional sanctions on Iran, and called for negotiations in order to find a diplomatic solution. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Sunday morning that in the deal that was achieved in Geneva, there are no losers, only winners. But the diplomat that thinks he’s the real winner is President Vladimir Putin.

Putin, not for the first time, took the military option off the table, and wasn’t terribly impressed with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s pressure when he visited last week. “We must reach an agreement with Iran as soon as possible,” Putin said in his meeting with Netanyahu. “We are optimistic about the talks in Geneva.”

The optimism paid off in the form of a deal. Lavrov was one of the key architects in the deal. He, like Kerry, accumulated thousands of travel miles, met with the Iranian and Western representatives, and at the end of day helped achieve the deal and strengthened Russia’s status in the Middle East.

Asian Oil Customers

Sanctions on Iran’s oil exports will remain in place during the six-month period covered by the deal, but world powers promise no new economic measures against Tehran as long as compliance moves ahead. This is good news for energy-hungry Asian economies such as India, China and Japan, which have received US waivers to continue Iranian oil imports. The waivers are likely to remain and the prospect of further talks – if the first-step provisions go smoothly – could begin to peel back the wider restrictions on oil sales.

Dubai

Long before the Gulf city-state was a symbol of gilded excess, it prospered as a commercial crossroads with places such as Iran. Its ports and air cargo terminals were once brimming with Iran-bound goods. Sanctions have sharply cut into the traditional trade and livelihood of many in the large Iranian expatriate community in Dubai. Anything that brings back Iranian business, even in limited steps, is welcome in Dubai. A statement from the United Arab Emirates said the deal “represents a step toward a permanent solution that preserves the stability of the region and protects it against nuclear proliferation concerns and risks.”

Losers

Israel

What didn’t Netanyahu try to stop Iran’s nuclear plan? He brought to the UN the plans to build the Auschwitz death camp. He brought a cartoon of a bomb detailing Tehran’s atomic weapon progress and drew on the bomb a red line, which showed just how dangerous a nuclear Iran can be.

Netanyahu and his administration’s campaign led Israel into a public debate with the US and Obama. Netanyahu demanded from the world powers to enforce more sanctions on Iran in order to suppress it. He said any deal made with Iran wouldn’t be applicable to Israel, and that Israel would remain with the right to self-defense. The deal that was signed in Geneva didn’t lead to an interruption in Iran’s uranium enrichment or get rid of the centrifuges or heavy water reactor. And if that wasn’t enough, there won’t be additional sanctions enforced on Iran.

It was agreed upon in Geneva isn’t an historic agreement, it’s an historic mistake. Today, the world has become a much more dangerous place because the most dangerous regime in the world has taken a significant step in obtaining the most dangerous weaponry in the world,” Netanyahu said. Even with the loss, the prime minister can count some minor victories, including an increase in IAEA monitoring.

Egypt

The military-backed leaders in Cairo have rolled back much of the Iran outreach by the Muslim Brotherhood-led government ousted in July. The nuclear deal and the possibility of expanding US-Iran dialogue could cut into Egypt’s traditional standing as the guiding force in shaping Western policy in the region.

Saudi Arabia, Gulf Nations

Even though Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf nations don’t have diplomatic ties with Israel, the common worry of Iran’s influence and ambitions brought them (according to foreign publications) to secret communications and warm relations on the topics related to defense and strategic interests.

The Geneva deal is considered bad news for Saudi Arabia and its neighboring Sunni countries, and Saudi Arabia has already warned that it won’t stand on the sidelines as long as the Iran nuclear program isn’t stopped, a clue that Saudi Arabia might try for itself to obtain nuclear armaments.

Saudi Arabia, which generally dictates the terms for the rest of the Gulf countries, called on the US to raise its tone against Tehran, and it sees in Iran a dangerous neighbor, attacking it for its supposed support in the Arab Spring. After the deal was signed, voices of warning came out of Saudi Arabia, which said Iran may give up on certain things by signing, but is getting for it something in return. One thing is for certain, the agreement will bother the Saudis, which believe anyway that Iran is involved in Saudi Arabia’s politics.

The only Saudi representative who agreed to talk since the signing was relatively low-ranking, Abdullah al-Askar, chairman of the foreign affairs committee in Saudi Arabia’s appointed Shoura Council, a quasi-parliament that advises the government on policy. “I don’t have an official government response, but personally I’m worried,” he said. “I’m worried that Iran is giving up something in order to get something else in the regional-political field. I’m worried about giving Iran more space or a free hand to operate in the region. The Iranian government has proved that it has a condemned agenda. No one in the region thinks things will be handled smoothly.”

Al-Askar also threatened the world powers. If the agreement will let Iran make a nuclear bomb, it will spark a race in the region, he said. “I believe that Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, and maybe even the UAE, will take steps in order to obtain the technology.”

The politician didn’t express a strange opinion in regards to Saudi Arabia’s official publications. Last week, before the signing in Geneva, the ambassador in Britain Mohammed bin Nawwaf bin Abdulaziz said his country won’t sit with crossed arms in front of an Iranian nuclear threat. In an interview with the British Times, he said, “All options are open for Saudi Arabia in order to stop the danger of Iran’s nuclear plan.” Similar statements, however, were not heard after the signing.

Saudi Arabia and Iran have been ideological and geopolitical foes for many years. Saudi Arabia is considered the crib of the Sunni faction of Islam, and Iran is the cradle of Shi’a Islam. Both are considered the leaders of their respective factions in the Muslim world, and are both trying to achieve regional hegemony. More than once has Saudi Arabia blamed Iran in attempts to start revolutions in Saudi Arabia’s allies, such as Bahrain, or to start a Shi’a revolution in Saudi Arabia itself. Iran, on its part, has a large influence on its neighbor Iraq, which has a Shi’a majority. Saudi Arabia is worried that a nuclear Iran will act more freely in the Middle East and will try to take power over areas that Saudi Arabia considers under its rule.

The United Arab Emirates said in an announcement that the “Cabinet hopes that the deal will be a step towards a permanent deal that will preserve the stability in the region and will protect against the tensions and dangers of nuclear proliferation.”

Another concerned neighbor of Iran is Jordan. The former Jordanian publicity minister, Salah al-Klab, talked about John Kerry’s statement in an al-Arabiya interview where he said the deal would bring security to Israel. “The deal may bring security to Israel, but not to Arab states or the Gulf nations, of which Iran is threatening,” the former minister said mockingly.

Mideast responds

Lebanon

In the Hezbollah camp, there have already been satisfied voices from the accord, and last week leader Hassan Nasrallah said that both Iran and his own organization come out of the negotiations strengthened.

A member of the March 8 Alliance (identified with Hezbollah) said the deal is a loss for the March 14 Alliance (coalition opposed to Hezbollah and the Syrian regime). The deal forces a new reality on the world. Decision-making in the world doesn’t just belong to the US

A member of parliament who supports Hezbollah added: “This is the first time that the US didn’t force a deal for the good of Israel at the expense of the nations of the region.” Another politician said that the world should pay attention to Israel’s nuclear plan.

Syria

The Syrian foreign ministry was quick to publish a congratulatory announcement about the “historic” agreement. The announcement said the outline guarantees the interests of the Iranian nation and recognizes its right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. “The agreement paves the way for an international effort to demilitarize the Middle East from weapons of mass destruction, specifically after Syria joined the convention for the prevention of chemical warfare proliferation.”

The announcement also said, referring to Israel, that the only obstacle remaining in order to achieve this effort is the single country that has nuclear weapons and has refused to put its facilities under the supervision of the international agency for atomic energy.

The Syrian publicity minister, Amran a-Zoabi, joined the celebrations and said in a television interview that the deal was a victory for the dialogue over the threats and sanctions. “Israel’s position isn’t surprising because its common-sense is to attack,” he said. “There are countries that are harmed from the agreement, Israel and Saudi Arabia. Their statements establish the fear and anxiety that they have in regards to the deal. This shows the level of coordination between Israel and Saudi Arabia in Iraq and in Syria.” As a close ally of Iran, Syria is a stiff opponent of Saudi Arabia, specifically against the background of Saudi support of the Sunni rebels fighting Bashar Assad‘s regime for the past two and a half years.

The Palestinian Authority, meanwhile, wasn’t one to hide its happiness over the deal. Mahmoud Abbas ‘s spokesman, Nabil Abu Rodeina, said the deal “sent an important lesson to Israel of which it needs to learn that peace is the only solution for the Middle East, and the world powers have to be wound up in order to advance a peace deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians.” He said the Palestinians want a “Middle East free of nuclear weapons,” hinting to a nuclear Israel.

An additional congratulator was Iraq. In an announcement that the Shi’a prime minister made, Nouri al-Maliki, he spoke of the giant step forward on the security and stability field in the region and eliminating the military tensions. “The process of confidence-building and stimulating dialogue will continue in a way that will fulfill the interests of both sides by preventing nuclear warfare proliferation.”

Obama to Netanyahu: US will remain committed to Israel

PM, US president discuss Iran nuclear deal, White House reports. Though Netanyahu reiterates agreement is ‘dangerous,’ Iran expert says deal has positive features, such as continuing oil sanctions

US President Barack Obama spoke by phone with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday to discuss a nuclear deal between Iran and six major powers that Israel opposes.

The White House announced the call as Obama flew aboard Air Force One from Washington to Seattle.

President Obama attempted to reassure a skeptical Netanyahu, saying he wants to begin consultations with Israel immediately.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters on Air Force One that the two leaders reaffirmed the shared goal of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

“Consistent with our commitment to consult closely wth our Israeli friends, the president told the prime minister that he wants the United States and Israel to begin consultations immediately regarding our effort to negotiate a comprehensive solution,” Earnest said.

“The president underscored that the United States will remain firm in our commitment to Israel which has good reason to be skeptical about Iran’s intentions,” he said.

Earlier Sunday, Prime Minister Netanyahu said in the EMET Prize for Art, Science and Culture ceremony that “as more and more details are being attached to the deal that was reached yesterday in Geneva, it’s becoming clearer that this is a bad a deal and a dangerous one for the world, the region and Israel.”

“Iran is receiving billions of dollars in relief in the sanctions without paying any sort of price. Iran is receiving written approval to violate UN Security Council resolutions,” the prime minister said.

Israeli Iran expert: Nuclear deal not all bad

The agreement signed Saturday night by Iran and the world powers in Geneva was received with profound resentment in Israel, as senior officials in the government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, condemned the pact. There are, however, other voices in Israel who say the deal also includes considerable achievements, such as maintaining current sanctions and preventing 20% uranium enrichment.

Former head of the Iran division in the Prime Minister’s Office, Yoel Guzansky, said Israel made all of its specifications public, knowing that not all of them would be approved.

“Part of Israel’s policy was to ask for the maximum with the hope and aspiration that at least half would be accepted,” he said. “I’m sure that the prime minister and others didn’t expect all of their demands to be fulfilled, because it’s not real.”

Guzansky, who nowadays serves as an analyst for the Institute for National Security Studies, expressed ambivalence toward the deal. “To call it good or bad; to make a binary division of all or nothing is a mistake,” he said. “The deal is a lot more complicated – there are positive sides and negative sides. I don’t agree with the statement that was made by government sources, saying this is a bad agreement and the sky is going to fall tomorrow.”

According to Guzansky, he wholeheartedly sympathaizes with the cries of anger in Israel. After all, Israel found itself up against the US, and at times it looked as if there was a battle between the two allies. The deal left Netanyahu dissatisfied, and all he could do was look at the agreement and try to extract what good for Israel he could.

More than centrifuges

“The most severe problem in the agreement was that it essentially fixed firmly the status of Iran as on the threshold of nuclear powers,” he said. “The deal doesn’t deal with other issues such as Iran’s missile arsenal or its problematic ties in the region – the support of Hamas, Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations. It’s a matter of one centrifuge more or less, but I think that the issue that’s not less significant is what the deal will do to the status of Iran in the region. Here the result is negative for Israel and the moderate Arab nations.”

Guzansky said that it’s necessary to look at Iran’s new status – from an excommunicated and isolated country to one that has received international legitimacy. “The accord opens a door for a future relationship between the US and the West and Iran, removing Iran’s isolation. That’s Israel’s and some of the Arab countries in the region’s biggest fear – that Iran will be accepted again into the international community like any other nation,” he said.

Iran gives:

———- Ceasing uranium enrichment beyond 5 percent

———- Neutralization of enriched uranium stockpile to 20 percent

———- Reducing installation of centrifuges

———- Limiting plutonium facility building in Arak

———- Increased monitoring of facilities

Iran gets:

———- Limited sanctions relief on metals market

———- Automobile Aircraft Parts and refined oil products

(estimated value – $7 billion)

 No further sanctions

The main considerations will be economic, Guzansky said: “There’s already the feeling that Western companies are waiting to sign a deal with Iran, and Western leaders are waiting in line to talk with the Iranian leaders, and that’s the feeling of getting out of the isolation. We’ll see where it goes. It’s a really negative part for Israel.”

The former head of the Military Intelligence Directorate echoed Guzansky’s sentiments. “It’s important for the final agreement to say that the material that’s enriched will be removed from Iran and the number of centrifuges will be reduced as much as possible, Gen. (res.) Amos Yadlin said. “If Israel will decide to go on the military option it must see if that option still exists. And what’s worse – Iran with a nuclear army or the results of the attack. In Netanyahu’s eyes, the first option is worse.”

Reason to be optimistic

Contrary to the bleak picture painted in Israel, Guzansky insisted the agreement held several positive issues. “They didn’t completely stop the significant sanctions, specifically the banking and oil sector ones,” Guzansky said. “These are staying and will be deliberated afterwards in the permanent agreement. The problem is if the current agreement becomes a permanent agreement. The supervision of nuclear activities will be increased, and that’s an important point.

“In some ways, the deal froze some of the components in the advancement of the nuclear plan. There are those that will say that these aren’t critical components, and maybe that’s true, but there is a certain level of freezing.

“The deal has a sort of reconstruction of Obama and his administration, which wanted to show that there’s a significant diplomatic achievement. It’s good for their image,” Guzansky added.

Yadlin said that Netanyahu can be encouraged with some of the agreement’s clauses. “Relative to the deal that was cut 10 ago, the current one has a complete removal of the 20% enriched material,” he said.

Revelation 17:9-11 – And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. In an article titled “Saudi Arabia’s Nuclear Bomb,” published November 16, 2013 in the London-based Saudi daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, ‘Abd Al-Rahman Al-Rashed, the daily’s former editor and the current director of Al-Arabiya, addressed the topic of Saudi Arabia’s possible nuclear armament. He denied rumors that the kingdom has a nuclear program or has ever intended to acquire atomic weapons, stressing that it is a signatory to the NPT. However, he states that if Iran manages to acquire a nuclear weapon, the kingdom will have no choice but to protect itself, either by acquiring nuclear weapons of its own or “via agreements that will maintain the regional balance of power and protect Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states.” This, since Iran’s weapon will not be meant for defensive purposes, and Saudi Arabia is undoubtedly “one of the potential targets on Iran’s nuclear hit list.”

the same time, he stresses that he is against sparking a nuclear arms race in the region, and that the ideal solution, therefore, is to prevent Iran from developing such weapons. He criticizes the policy of U.S. President Barak Obama vis-à-vis Iran, saying that its willingness to negotiate with Iran gives the latter confidence that it will manage to convince the world to accept it as a nuclear power.

The following is an English translation of the article, published on the Al-Arabiya website.[1]

“If Iran Builds Nuclear Weapons, Saudi Arabia Will Have To Protect Itself, Either With A Nuclear Weapon Of Its Own Or Via Agreements That Will Maintain The Regional Balance Of Power “

“There has been recent talk of Saudi Arabia’s supposed determination to buy a nuclear bomb from Pakistan. Firstly, is this even possible in light of the international agreements signed by both countries forbidding the owner of a nuclear weapon to transfer or sell it? This question is especially pertinent as Saudi Arabia is not allowed to manufacture such a weapon for military purposes. Secondly, would such [a] nuclear weapon add any value to Saudi Arabia’s defense systems?

“After [Saudi Arabia] bought Chinese missiles and after news of the secret deal was leaked, it was said that Saudi Arabia might use these missiles to carry nuclear warheads.[2] However, in 1988 the kingdom signed a treaty on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons aimed at limiting the spread of nuclear weapons technology. Saudi Arabia now abides [by] that treaty, along with 190 other countries. There have always been stories and skeptical media campaigns stating that Saudi Arabia intends to become a nuclear power. Such stories were supported by claims made by an employee who defected from the Saudi embassy in New York. He said that Saudi Arabia is building a nuclear bomb to support Iraq. Before that, a U.S. intelligence analyst had said that Saudi Arabia [had] supported Pakistan’s nuclear project with an investment of $2 billion.[3]

“After all these years, we are confident that Saudi Arabia does not have [nuclear] bombs or a nuclear military project. The question now is: If the United States allows Iran to build nuclear weapons, why [is it not] the right of Saudi Arabia, Iran’s neighbor, to protect itself and do the same? This would allow Saudi Arabia to maintain the balance of power with Iran. The two countries that have been in conflict for more than three decades. A similar situation occurred when Pakistan acquired nuclear weapons in order to maintain the regional balance of power in light of India’s nuclear weapon.

“From a theoretical, political and military perspective, Saudi Arabia will have to protect itself from the Iranian regime’s nuclear program either with a nuclear weapon or via agreements that will maintain the regional balance of power and protect Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states.”

“Riyadh Is One Of The Potential Targets On Iran’s Nuclear Hit List”

“Logically, Saudi Arabia will have to do so, especially since there is a long history of aggression orchestrated by Tehran against Riyadh. The Israelis are more than aware of the Iranian leadership’s intentions and its lack of rationality, but no one should ever doubt that Riyadh is one of the potential targets on Iran’s nuclear hit list [as well]. Iran has never hesitated to directly or indirectly target the kingdom. Although Iran recently expelled Osama bin Laden’s sons and his wife from the country, it still holds those who executed the Khobar and Riyadh bombings and also sponsors hostile activities in Yemen, Iraq and Bahrain.

“When [the] Iranian nuclear weapons are ready, they cannot be seen as a defensive weapon because Saudi Arabia has never attacked Iran. Iran’s nuclear weapons will rather work to deter major countries from interfering in Iran’s regional conflicts, particularly in the Gulf. Iran might use its weapon in wars against its neighbors such as Saudi Arabia.”

“The Ideal Solution Is To Insist On Preventing Iran From Building Nuclear Weapons”

“Although it is not difficult to imagine the risks of allowing Iran [to] finish the construction of its nuclear weapons, I am against setting off a nuclear weapons race in the region. Ever since Ayatollah Khomeini stepped aboard an Air France plane in 1979 to travel back to Iran, the Islamic Republic has caused chaos in the region. Iran’s threats have brought the aircraft carriers and battleships of major countries to the Gulf’s waters. Foreign powers have established [some] five bases in the Gulf region, along with establishing conventions ensuring the protection of the Gulf.

“Though Saudi Arabia and the Gulf have powerful reasons to create a nuclear power-balance vis-à-vis Iran, I am afraid that this would be a dangerous move from a security, economic and environmental perspective. The ideal solution is to insist on preventing Iran from building nuclear weapons. Unfortunately, however,  the involvement of U.S. President Barack Obama’s government in six months of negotiations boosts Iran’s confidence that it can force the international community to accept it as a nuclear country, despite all the offers, guarantees and promises made to stop this from happening.”

Ezekiel 38:1-6 – And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, [2] Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, [3] And say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: [4] And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: [5] Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet: [6] Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.

The Land of Magog is Russia

The current Ruler of the Land of Magog is Putin

Gog is the Chief Prince of Meshech and Tubal

Meshech and Tubal are Greater Syria

Gog is the Antichrist who will soon arise in Greater Syria

Ezekiel 38:1,2 – “And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, [2] Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him.”  Gog (high extension) appears for the first time in Ezekiel.  He is the Anti-christ of whom so much has been written.  Please note that he is identified as the “chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.”  Many commentators, especially in the last 100 years, have not identified him as the Antichrist, but have identified him as the ruler or chief prince of the land of Magog, which I do not believe Scripture justifies.  Before the 20th Century, most identified him as the Antichrist. In verse 2 Ezekiel is told to set his face against two separate things, a person and a place.  The person is Gog (Antichrist), and the place is the land of the descendants of Magog where it existed in Ezekiel’s day.  If we do not locate the territories of Magog, Meshech, and Tubal as they existed in Ezekiel’s day, then we can have no idea as to where the Antichrist will soon rear his head, or the area from which his attack will be launched.  Why?  Because more than 2500 years have slipped by since Ezekiel wrote his prophecies, and the bloodlines of all three men been distributed across the entire planet.  In order to correctly identify the area, from whence the Antichrist will attack Israel, we must identify where the descendants of Meshech and Tubal were residing in 500 and 600 B.C.  Why?  Because the Antichrist is not the chief prince of Magog, he is the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.  He will come from the area where their descendants were settled in 500 and 600 B.C.

I will attempt to use two different sources to locate where the descendants of Meshech and Tubal were clustered at the time of Ezekiel’s writings.  The first is found in the 27th chapter of Ezekiel, and the second is from the Assyrian monument stones of that period. Ezekiel 27:3 – “And say unto Tyrus, O thou that art situate at the entry of the sea, which art a merchant of the people for many isles, Thus saith the Lord God; O Tyrus, thou hast said, I am of perfect beauty.”  Tyrus (Tyre) was a seaport on the southern coast of what we know today as Lebanon, which is directly north of Israel.  Tyrus built its first great sea wall to protect its harbored ships more than 3000 years ago, and was a thriving seaport in Ezekiel’s day.  Its ships carried merchandise from the countries of the east across all the Mediterranean, and even as far north as the shores of the English Channel.  Zidon (Sidon) was also a sea port, and less than 20 miles separated the two cities.  The wise men of Tyrus were the navigators of the ships, and the men of Zidon were the deck hands, as portrayed in Ezekiel 27:8 – “The inhabitants of Zidon and Arvad were thy mariners: thy wise men, O Tyrus, that were in thee, were thy pilots.”  Now, bearing all this in mind, let us look at Ezekiel 27:13 – “Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were thy merchants: they traded the persons of men and vessels of brass in thy market.”  Meshech and Tubal were warlike tribes, who often took their captives (persons of men) and the vessels of brass they had captured, or hammered out themselves, and carried them to the  NEAREST seaport for trading.  The captives were, of course, loaded on the ships and sold as slaves in foreign ports of trade.  Why the NEAREST seaport?  Because, in Ezekiel’s day, travel was by foot, donkey, camel, and horse.  People always carried their trading goods to the nearest port, particularly slaves.  Therefore, I conclude that Meshech and Tubal must have roamed in the area we know today as Syria, Lebanon, northwestern Iraq, and southern Turkey.  Meshech and Tubal are the Mushki and Tabali of the Assyrian stone monuments.  In the time of Sargon and Sennacherib (700 B.C.) the territory of Tubal adjoined southern Cilicia, while that of Meshech filled the highlands to the east of Tubal.  Considering the locations derived from the Bible and stone tablets, it appears that the Antichrist, as the chief prince of the area once occupied by Meshech and Tubal, is likely to arise, and eventually to attack Israel, from Syria or Lebanon.  And, since Lebanon is virtually controlled by Syria, it appears Syria is the best guess for his homeland.

Ezekiel 38:1-3 – “And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, [2] Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, [3] And say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:”

We have established, from the Scriptures and the Assyrian stone monuments, that the descendants of Meshech and Tubal, at the time Ezekiel wrote his prophecies, were primarily located in what we know as Syria and Lebanon.  We also established that the prophecy is against a person, Gog (Antichrist), and against a land, the land of Magog.  I am convinced that the Antichrist will attack Israel from Syria.  Now, what about the “land of Magog?”  Where were the Magogites located at the time of Ezekiel’s writings?  Flavius Josephus, the noted Jewish historian makes the following statements concerning the Magogites in Antiquities of the Jews, Chapter VI, under the title,  HOW EVERY NATION WAS DENOMINATED FROM THEIR FIRST INHABITANTS:  “Japhet, the son of Noah, had seven sons.”  “They called the nations by their own names.”  “Magog founded those that from him were called Magogites, but who by the Greeks were called Scythians.”  The Greek writers of the Classic Age said the Scythians occupied the area which today we identify as stretching from Moldova eastward across the Ukraine, southern Russia, and into Kazakhstan, then southward into Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan – Roughly the area north of the Black Sea, between the Black and Caspian Seas, and the area northwest, north, and northeast of the Caspian Sea.  I do not believe the nations in this area will join in the initial attack against Israel, but I am certain they will come down for the final battle of Gog’s war, which is the Battle of Armageddon. The Battle of Armageddon, found in Revelation 16:16, is the final battle in Gog’s war, which began some3 and ½ years earlier.

Verse 3 fails to include the “land of Magog,” and is a message directly pointed, and personally addressed, against the Antichrist Gog, who once again is identified as the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.  Popular writers in the last century brought a teaching into play that is simply not true.  They said the word “chief” was “rosh” in the Hebrew language, which is true.  But they said it meant “Russian,” which is not true.  The Russian and Hebrew language have never overlapped in history to support such a claim.  He is not a Russian prince.  He is the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, most likely having a Syrian father.  The word “rosh,” in the KJV, is translated as “chief” 90 times, as “head” 349 times, as “top” 75 times, as “beginning” 14 times, as “company” 12 times, as “captain” 10 times, as “sum” 9 times, as “first” 6 times, as “principle” 5 times, as “chief man” 4 times, and as “ruler” on two occasions.  At no time, in all of history, could it legitimately be identified as someone who is a Russian.

I am convinced this chief prince of Meshech and Tubal will come from either northwestern Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, or southern Turkey, but I will be very much surprised if his father is not a Syrian.  He will be the leader of a multilateral Arab force that will carry out a surprise attack against Israel from the north.  I believe this is spoken of in Revelation 17:12,13 – “And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. [13] These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.”

Although he will have the support of ten Arab nations, I believe the nations directly involved in the initial attack will be Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran from without, and the Palestinians from within.  I believe the other nations, which will then immediately become involved in the Jihad, are most likely Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Sudan.  Lord willing, I will continue a line by line exposition of Ezekiel 38 in Prophecy Update Number 29.  If current events in the Mid-East merit a special update between these expositions in Ezekiel, we will put an A or B suffix on the update issued the preceding Friday

I have established a case to show that the Antichrist is likely to arise in Syria, and will launch his initial attack again Israel from that position. Now, let us continue from Ezekiel 38:4 – “And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords.”  This portrays a man overtaking a fleeing beast, putting hooks into its jaws, then turning and pulling it  along a path the man desires to lead it.  The Antichrist will have no choice in this matter.  God will create political and economic circumstances whereby he must come down at exactly the appointed time.  I protest the efforts of some commentators to take the weapons of Ezekiel’s day, and attempt to carry them into our day and time.  Suppose God had inspired Ezekiel to write 1020 tanks, 923 MIG JETS, 3283 katyusha launchers, 12000 katyusha rockets, 723 SAM shoulder held launchers with 4673 SAM’s, and 2073 flamethrowers.  The readers of Ezekiel’s day would have laughed him to scorn.  I am persuaded that God meant for our final generation to picture a great, mighty, army, fully armed to the teeth with all the known modern weapons of warfare.

Verse 5 names three of the peoples from which the Antichrist will draw his initial attacking horde: “Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:” Persia was basically the peoples east of the Euphrates, which today would be Iran and Iraq.  Libya corresponds with the location of modern day Libya.  And Ethiopia in Ezekiel’s day was made up mostly of what we call Sudan today.  Once again the point is made that they will be fully armed for all out war.

Verse 6 continues to name the peoples of Ezekiel’s day from which he will draw his support, and by knowing where they lived at that time, we can at least attempt to identify those nations that occupy these areas today:  “Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.”  Quite frankly, I have searched, and researched, the writings of many historians, both ancient and modern, and, in the end, knowing that honesty is the best policy, I can only say that there is a wide diversity of opinion.  Up to this point, as regards the locations of Magog, Meshech, Tubal, Persia, Libya, and Ethiopia, I have presented a case from both the Scriptures and historical records, which I believe is substantial.  But in the case of Gomer, and the house of Togarmah, as to where they were settled in Ezekiel’s day, I can only give a rough approximation.  The house of Togarmah and the descendants of Gomer were sandwiched between the Magogites (Scythians) to the north, and Meshach, Tubal, and Persia to the south. They stretched from west to east across modern day Turkey into the area south of the Caucasus Mountains, and through extreme northern Iraq and Iran.

The Israeli GOC Army headquarters –  (“Ground Arm”), known unofficially as Mazi, is a multi-corps command headquarters created in 1998, which amalgamates the ground forces of the Israel Defense Forces. The current size of the Israeli Ground Forces is estimated at a rough 133,000 active soldiers and 380,000 soldiers in reserve.

Putin controls Middle East

Analysis: The more US takes its time in regaining Sunnis’ trust, the more Israel may grow closer to Saudi Arabia to prevent Iranian bomb

Dr. Yaron Friedman

 November 19, 2013

The entire world was surprised by the outbreak of the Arab revolutions: The Arab Spring in 2011, the Islamic Winter in 2012, and the reaction of the Arab regimes in 2013. Now comes the “Russians are back” era ahead of 2014.

Despite the Sunni world’s great frustration over the American dialogue with Iran, Arab countries’ courtship of Russia is still surprising, in light of its consistent support for Bashar Assad‘s regime since the start of the revolution in Syria. Russia has provided consistent support for a regime responsible for the death of 120,000 Arab Syrians

Russia, which was the most hated country in the Sunni world at the start of the revolution in Syria, is gaining growing popularity in the Arab world. A series of mistakes by the American government led to the Russians’ return to the Middle East. How serious will the results of the Russian comeback be?

The negotiations between the United States and Iran have yet to yield a thing, but their sub-scores in the meantime are disastrous for America and its democratic vision in the Middle East. The series of mistakes by the US included its agreement not to attack the Syrian regime in return for its (alleged) complete elimination of chemical weapons, its willingness to negotiate with the Iranian regime on the nuclear issue, and cutting aid to the Egyptian regime while it fights the Muslim Brotherhood. The consequences could generate a strategic upheaval in the region.

Up until now, the Middle East was divided as follows: The Shiite world, led by Iran, was supported by Russia; and the Sunni world, led by Egypt and Saudi Arabia, was supported by the US. But the latest American steps are seen as a serious betrayal by the Sunni axis.

As opposed to America, Russia was revealed during the Syrian crisis as a loyal friend of the Assad regime. The Saudi kingdom invested billions in the Syrian opposition and suffered a major disappointment with the cancelation of the American strike. Saudi Arabia’s refusal to be represented in the United Nations Security Council in October signaled its change in policy towards the US.

Saudi Arabia is more concerned than all of the region’s countries that Iran will achieve nuclear abilities. As opposed to the Iranian-Israeli conflict which only began in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian-Saudi conflict has a background of some 1,300 years of struggle between Shiites and Sunnis. If Iran attains a nuclear bomb, the Shiites will gain an advantage over the Sunni world for the first time in the history of Islam. The head of Saudi intelligence, Prince Turki al-Faisal, declared in the past that if Iran obtained nuclear abilities, Saudi Arabia would do the same.

And so, from the moment the Americans began considering easing sanctions against Iran, Saudi Arabia began talks with Pakistan, the only Muslim (and Sunni) country with a nuclear weapon. Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal stated recently that he would also consider accepting Russian aid. The Russians, on their part, rushed to express their consent to help develop the Saudi reactors. At the same time, discussions began at the Gulf Cooperation Council on the development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The Russians are expected to be involved in that project too.

Filling the American void

The Russians are taking very good advantage of the void created by the American policy. The arrival of the Russian foreign and defense ministers in Egypt for talks last week was an unprecedented historical event since the countries severed ties in 1979. In the 1970s, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat broke off relations with the Soviet Union, turned to the US for help and signed the peace treaty with Israel.

President Hosni Mubarak considered opening a civilian nuclear reactor with Russia’s help, but shelved the idea after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. According to a recent report in the Arab press, a significant part of the aid Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates gave Egypt, which was supposed to help the country’s economy, will be used to purchase modern weapons from Russia, including submarines and MiG-29 fighter aircraft.

Russia and Egypt are expected to sign long-term military agreements soon, which will open a new chapter in the relations between the two countries. A report in one of the Russian newspapers even stated that the future agreements include the establishment of a Russian civilian nuclear reactor in Egypt off the Mediterranean Sea.

The appetite for nukes has not skipped over Jordan, which officially declared about two weeks ago that it is building a nuclear reactor for peaceful purposes. This reactor, which will be utilizable in 2021, was acquired from a Russian company at the approval of the Russian government. The declared goal is to produce energy and reduce the price of electricity. The Russian funding of the project, which amounts to 49%, proves just how important it is for the Russians to build the reactor.

The reactors are allegedly meant to solve the energy problem in the Middle East, especially in countries in distress like Egypt and Jordan. The nuclear energy is supposed to prepare rich countries like Saudi Arabia and the Gulf emirates to an era in which they will run out of oil reserves. But the nuclear race, both for peaceful purposes and for purposes of war, will eventually lead to the nuclearization of the Middle East.

There is no limit to the dangers this new situation could create in the future. The Jordanian reactor will be built too close to the Great Rift Valley, and its maintenance will be problematic for the poor kingdom. The reactor built in the south of the kingdom, which will need the Red Sea water to cool the centrifuges, will serve as a constant threat on the entire area. The reactors expected to pop up like mushrooms in Saudi Arabia and perhaps in Egypt too later on, could violate Israel‘s strategic advantage over the Arab world.

In the Middle Eastern game of chess between the US and Russia, the former enjoyed a longer advantage of several decades. But one wrong move of sacrificing safe pieces in order to reach vague achievements, changed the situation on the board.

The US is facing a new and unexpected challenge: It must get the Sunni axis back on its side and regain its trust. The more the US takes its time in doing so, the more Russia will deepen its ties in the region.

The crisis created should have brought two old enemies closer, Saudi Arabia and Israel, as they are both frustrated by the US policy and both want to prevent the Iranian bomb at any cost. If the leaders of the two countries are wise enough to realize the power concealed in cooperating with each other, it will be “the start of a beautiful friendship.”

There is a verse by verse exposition of Revelation 12 on our Web Site.

Revelation 12:6-17 – And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. [7] And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, [8] And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. [9] And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. [10] And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. [11] And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. [12] Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. [13] And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. [14] And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. [15] And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. [16] And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth. [17] And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

BIRTH PANG NUMBER 43

The Remnant of Israel, Past, Present, and Future!

Part 8

April 5, 2002

Revelation 12:5,6,17 – And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. [6] And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. [17] And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

The man child seed of the woman is Jesus Christ. God promised in Genesis 3:15 that this seed would one day crush the power of Satan, but in so doing would suffer for the price he paid while walking and dying on this earth. Even though the woman is herself a Jewish remnant, there will also be a Jewish remnant within the remnant, a living remnant of believers who testify to the unbelieving Israelis that Jesus is the Messiah, and keep the commandments delivered to them by Jesus Christ.  They are a sealed believing remnant of 144,000 Jews living among the one-third of Israel that flees to the Negev. This one-third will number between 1.9 and 2.1 million.

Revelation 7:4 – And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.

Zechariah 13:8 – And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

Through the testimony of the 144,000, and the preaching of the two witnesses who lead them, it will cause all Israel to be saved when Jesus returns, and a spiritual nation shall be born in a day.

Romans 11:25-27 – For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. [26] And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: [27] For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.

Zechariah 13:9 – And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.

Revelation 11:2,3 – But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. [3] And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

The 144,000 Jewish remnant of believers in Jesus (Seed of the Woman) will remain on the  earth with all the saved until the rapture occurs on the sounding of the last trumpet 7, but those Jews that have not believed at the rapture will go through the 7 vials of wrath.  Many of unbelieving Jews will believe between the rapture and the 2nd Advent, and will go into the Millennial Reign as saved children of God in fleshly bodies.

There will be saved man and women on the earth until the 7th Trumpet.

Revelation 6:9-11 – And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: [10] And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? [11] And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

Revelation 7:13-17 – And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? [14] And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. [15] Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. [16] They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. [17] For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

Revelation 19:10 – And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Revelation22:14 – Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Final War of Gentile Age Is Looming after Obama Leaves Office

Part 5

November 20, 2013

http://www.tribulationperiod.com/

All of God’s creation is groaning while waiting anxiously for the appearance of the sons of God, who also groan within themselves for the resurrection of their glorified bodies, in which God’s glory will be eternally manifested.

Romans 8:19-23 – For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. [20] For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, [21] Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. [22] For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. [23] And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our old body.

Tornadoes, Typhoons, Tsunamis, Earthquakes, Pestilence, & Famine

Luke 21:11 – And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Tornadoes

November 17, 2013 Tornado Outbreak

Excerpt From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The November 17, 2013 tornado outbreak was the deadliest tornado outbreak during the month of November on record in the U.S. state of Illinois. It has resulted in many tornadoes across Illinois, Missouri, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio with at least eight fatalities. Damaging straight-line winds were seen over a larger area including Iowa, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and New York. More than 390,000 lost power in Michigan, more than 160,000 in Indiana, more than 160,000 in Illinois and 37,000 in Missouri.  Non-tornadic deaths and injured include one killed in Jackson County, Michigan when a tree fell on a car, one critically injured after touching a downed wire in Detroit, and two minor injuries in a home damaged by wind in Ohio.

On November 16, a weak low pressure area formed over the central United States. It rapidly deepened over the upper Great Lakes the next day, and also encountered a very strong jet stream and a warm, humid air mass for the time of year. In turn, the Storm Prediction Center issued a moderate risk of severe weather for the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes regions for November 17. As confidence increased and the low deepened, the threat was upgraded to a high risk of severe weather for that same region, the second such issuance in 2013 and the first in the month of November since November 15, 2005.

As of November 18 there had been confirmed a total of 30 tornadoes.  The confirmed 30 included 4 EFO, 10 EFI, 11 EF2, 3 EF3, and 2 EF4.

Typhoons

November 17, 2013

It will be months before we know the true damage brought about by super typhoon Haiyan. The largest death tolls now associated with the storm are only estimates. Aid workers from across the world are now flying to the island nation, or they just recently arrived there. They—and Filipinos—will support survivors and start to rebuild.

But they will be helped by an incredible piece of technology, a worldwide, crowd-sourced humanitarian collaboration made possible by the Internet.

What is it? It’s a highly detailed map of the areas affected by super typhoon Haiyan, and it mostly didn’t exist three days ago, when the storm made landfall.

Since Saturday, more than 400 volunteers have made nearly three quarters of a million additions to a free, online map of areas in and around the Philippines. Those additions reflect the land before the storm, but they will help Red Cross workers and volunteers make critical decisions after it about where to send food, water, and supplies.

These things are easy to hyperbolize, but in the Philippines, now, it is highly likely that free mapping data and software—and the community that support them—will save lives.

TIME OF MORE FREQUENT GREAT EARTHQUAKES IS REAL

A surge in Earthquakes 8.5 or greater began after Israel became a nation in 1948, and  a second surge began to accelerate outward around the great rim of the Pacific Ocean Tectonic Plate in 2004 beginning with the  great Indonesian Earthquakes and Tsunami.

How the Japan Quake moved the Earth on its Axis

Monday 14 March 2011

Experts have said the force of the earthquake in Japan shifted the earth’s axis by 25 centimetres and shortened the day by 1.8 microseconds – but what does this mean?

Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology has calculated that the earth’s axis moved by a quarter of a metre as a result of the devastating 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan, the largest ever recorded in the country.

The US Geological Survey said the main island of Japan had moved 2.4 metres as a result of the quake. It also said hundreds of aftershocks have hit Japan since the main quake, at least two dozen of which have topped magnitude 6, the size of the Christchurch earthquake.

Japan: how dangerous are nuclear blasts?

The earthquake, which has had an appalling impact in Japan after causing a huge tsunami, is the fifth most powerful to hit the world in the past century.

It surpassed Japan’s biggest previous tremor, the Great Kanto Quake of 1923, which had a magnitude of 7.9 and killed more than 140,000 people in the Tokyo area.

Pestilence

Pestilence in Divers Places Here and There!

July 29, 2012

http://www.tribulationperiod.com/

I issued the 2 following Archive Excerpt Paragraphs some 12 years ago regarding drug-resistant strains developing against infectious diseases.

Begin Quote

The World Health Organization (WHO) fears that tuberculosis may kill 30 million worldwide during the next decade. The emergence of drug-resistant strains is hampering efforts by health agencies to slow the renewed spread of the consumptive illness. Another sort of “loimos” is malaria, which is on the rise around the world, and once curative treatments are losing their effect. It is a pestilence of global dimensions, and new strains are evolving that scientists fear will be untreatable.

But what about all the microbes generating all this pestilence, this “loimos,” these deadly infectious disorders, what are they doing, how are they behaving? Are they doing something that will make the pestilences continue to act like a woman’s birth pangs through the tribulation period? Yes! A leading national magazine cover, back in the last century, carried the bold print title: “REVENGE OF THE KILLER MICROBES – ARE WE LOSING THE WAR AGAINST INFECTIOUS DISEASES?” Tuft’s Levy answered the question in Newsweek Magazine by stating: “The rise of drug-resistant germs is unparalleled in recorded biologic history.”

End Quote

Famine

The demographic impacts of famine are sharp. Mortality is concentrated among children and the elderly. A consistent demographic fact is that in all recorded famines, male mortality exceeds female, even in those populations (such as northern India and Pakistan) where there is a male longevity advantage during normal times. Reasons for this may include greater female resilience under the pressure of malnutrition, and possibly female’s naturally higher percentage of body fat. Famine is also accompanied by lower fertility. Famines therefore leave the reproductive core of a population—adult women—lesser affected compared to other population categories, and post-famine periods are often characterized a “rebound” with increased births. Even though the theories of Thomas Malthus would predict that famines reduce the size of the population commensurate with available food resources, in fact even the most severe famines have rarely dented population growth for more than a few years. The mortality in China in 1958–61, Bengal in 1943, and Ethiopia in 1983–85 was all made up by a growing population over just a few years. Of greater long-term demographic impact is emigration: Ireland was chiefly depopulated after the 1840s famines by waves of emigration.
