It has been estimated that the number of people killed in Syria since the uprising began now stands at more than 90,000.

Estimates suggest that Israel’s War of Independence in 1948 cost around 20,000 casualties in total on all sides – the highest figure for all the wars in which Israel has been involved throughout its history. Casualty estimates of the wars of 1967 and 1973 are similar: another 20,000 and 15,000 respectively. The smaller wars in Lebanon and Gaza in the years since add several thousand more to this sad total. But something is striking here.

All the wars involving Israel, throughout its history, have caused at least 30,000 fewer deaths than have been caused in Syria in the last couple of years alone.

Air and ground incursions in Gaza in recent years have on each occasion led to deaths that are a fraction of the number in Syria. Yet the world, and the world’s press, and the world’s protest movements have on every occasion mobilized in a way which seemed to demonstrate an obsession which is probably at best unhealthy, and at worst the expression of straightforward bigotry.

All those people who claim that small incursions into Gaza were in fact a “holocaust,” where are they now? If the death of a hundred people is a “holocaust,” what is the death of 90,000?

With Israel, every death is investigated, every movement protested against. Yet when it comes to the wholesale slaughter in Syria, there is just a single global shrug. We are forced to conclude yet again that when an Arab kills an Arab it is not news. Only if a Jew is involved does it make the cut.

The jinn (Arabic: ǧinn, singular ǧinnī; also spelled djinn), or genies, are spirits mentioned in the Qurān and Islamic theology who inhabit an unseen world in dimensions beyond the visible universe of humans. Together, the jinn, humans and angels make up the three sentient creations of God. The Quran mentions that the jinn are made of a smokeless and “scorching fire”, and they have the physical property of weight. Like human beings, the jinn can also be good, evil, or neutrally benevolent. The jinn are mentioned frequently in the Quran, and the 72nd surah is entitled Sūrat al-Jinn. Etymology and definitions

Jinn is a noun of the collective number in Arabic literally meaning “hidden from sight”, and it derives from the Arabic root j-n-n (pronounced: jann/ junn جَنّ / جُنّ) meaning “to hide” or “be hidden”. Other words derived from this root are majnūn ‘mad’ (literally, ‘one whose intellect is hidden’), junūn ‘madness’, and ǧanīn ’embryo, fetus’ (‘hidden inside the womb’).

The Arabic root ǧ-n-n means ‘to hide, conceal’. A word for garden or Paradise, jannah, is a cognate of the Hebrew word gan ‘garden’, derived from the same Semitic root.
The word genie in English is derived from Latin genius, meant a sort of tutelary or guardian spirit thought to be assigned to each person at their birth.

Jinn in Islam

In Islamic theology jinn are said to be creatures with free will, made from smokeless fire by Allah as humans were made of clay, among other things. According to the Quran, jinn have free will, and Iblīs abused this freedom in front of Allah by refusing to bow to Adam when Allah ordered angels and jinn to do so. For disobeying Allah, he was expelled from Paradise and called “Šhayṭān” (Satan). Jinn are frequently mentioned in the Quran: Surah 72 (named Sūrat al-Jinn) is named after the jinn, and has a passage about them. Another surah (Sūrat al-Nās) mentions jinn in the last verse. The Quran also mentions that Muhammad was sent as a prophet to both “humanity and the jinn,” and prophets and messengers were sent to both communities.

An appellation of Muhammad is Rasûl-üs-Sakaleyn. Because Muhammad met several times the jinns at night. A masjid (Masjid-i Jinn) was built at a future date to the memory of this phenomena.

Similar to humans, jinn have free will allowing them to do as they choose (such as follow any religion). They are usually invisible to humans, and humans do not appear clearly to them. Jinn have the power to travel large distances at extreme speeds and are thought to live in remote areas, mountains, seas, trees, and the air, in their own communities. Like humans, jinn will also be judged on the Day of Judgment and will be sent to Paradise or Hell according to their deeds.[11]

Classifications and characteristics

The social organization of the jinn community resembles that of humans; e.g., they have kings, courts of law, weddings, and mourning rituals.[12] A few traditions (hadith), divide jinn into three classes: those who have wings and fly in the air, those who resemble snakes and dogs, and those who travel about ceaselessly.[13] Other reports claim that ‘Abd Allāh ibn Mas‘ūd (d. 652), who was accompanying Muhammad when the jinn came to hear his recitation of the Quran, described them as creatures of different forms; some resembling vultures and snakes, others tall men in white garb.[14] They may even appear as dragons, onagers, or a number of other animals.[15] In addition to their animal forms, the jinn occasionally assume human form to mislead and destroy their human victims.[16] Certain hadiths have also claimed that the jinn may subsist on bones, which will grow flesh again as soon as they touch them, and that their animals may live on dung, which will revert to grain or grass for the use of the jinn flocks.[17]

Ibn Taymiyyah believed the jinn were generally “ignorant, untruthful, oppressive and treacherous,”[18] thus representing the very strict interpretations adhered by the Salafi schools of thought.

Ibn Taymiyyah believes that the jinn account for much of the “magic” perceived by humans, cooperating with magicians to lift items in the air unseen, delivering hidden truths to fortune tellers, and mimicking the voices of deceased humans during seances.[18]

In Sūrat al-Raḥmān, verse 33, God reminds jinn as well as mankind that they would possess the ability to pass beyond the furthest reaches of space only by His authority, followed by the question: “Then which of the favors of your Lord do you deny?” In Sūrat Al-Jinn, verses 8–10, Allah narrates concerning the jinn how they touched or “sought the limits” of the sky and found it full of stern guards and shooting stars, as a warning to man. It goes on further to say how the jinn used to take stations in the skies to listen to divine decrees passed down through the ranks of the angels, but those who attempt to listen now (during and after the revelation of the Qurʾan) shall find fiery sentinels awaiting them.

Qarīn

A related belief is that every person is assigned one’s own special jinnī, also called a qarīn, of the jinn and if the qarin is evil it could whisper to people’s souls and tell them to submit to evil desires.[19][20][21] The notion of a qarīn is not universally accepted amongst all Muslims, but it is generally accepted that Šayṭān whispers in human minds, and he is assigned to each human being.

In a hadith recorded by Muslim, the companion Ibn Mas‘ud reported: ‘The Prophet Muhammad said: ‘There is not one of you who does not have a jinnī appointed to be his constant companion (qarīn).’ They said, ‘And you too, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said, ‘Me too, but Allah has helped me and he has submitted, so that he only helps me to do good.’ ‘

Jinn in Muslim cultures
The stories of the jinn can be found in various Muslim cultures around the world. In Sindh the concept of the Jinni was introduced during the Abbasid Era and has become a common part of the local folklore which also includes stories of both male jinn called “jinn” and female jinn called “jiniri.” Folk stories of female jinn include stories such as the Jejhal Jiniri.

Other acclaimed stories of the jinn can be found in the One Thousand and One Nights story of the Fisherman and the Jinni; more than three different types of jinn are described in the story of Ma‘ruf the Cobbler; a mighty jinni helps young Aladdin in the story of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp; as Ḥasan Badr al-Dīn weeps over the grave of his father until sleep overcomes him, and he is awoken by a large group of sympathetic jinn in the Tale of ‘Alī Nūr al-Dīn and his son Badr ad-Dīn Ḥasan.

During the Rwandan genocide both Hutus and Tutsi avoided searching in local Rwandan Muslim neighborhoods and widely believed myths that local Muslims and Mosques were protected by the power of Islamic magic and the efficacious jinn. In Cyangugu, arsonists ran away instead of destroying the mosque because they believed jinn were guarding the mosque and feared their wrath.

Relationship of King Solomon and the genies

According to traditions, the jinn stood behind the learned humans in Solomon’s court, who in turn, sat behind the prophets. The jinn remained in the service of Solomon, who had placed them in bondage, and had ordered them to perform a number of tasks.

“And before Solomon were marshalled his hosts, of jinn and men and birds, and they were all kept in order and ranks.” (Quran 27:17)

The Qurʾan relates that Solomon died while he was leaning on his staff. As he remained upright, propped on his staff, the jinn thought he was still alive and supervising them, so they continued to work. They realized the truth only when Allah sent a creature to crawl out of the ground and gnaw at Solomon’s staff until his body collapsed. The Qurʾan then comments that if they had known the unseen, they would not have stayed in the humiliating torment of being enslaved.

“Then, when We decreed (Solomon’s) death, nothing showed them his death except a little worm of the earth, which kept (slowly) gnawing away at his staff: so when he fell down, the jinn saw plainly that if they had known the unseen, they would not have tarried in the humiliating penalty (of their task).” (Qurʾan 34:14)

Difference in perception of jinn between East and West

There is a significant difference in how these beings are perceived in East (as jinn) and in West (as genies). Western natives moving to Eastern countries may experience a bout of culture shock when they are confronted with the perceived presence of jinn by people who believe in them, and two good examples of the struggle to adapt to a culture which believes in jinn are The Caliph’s House and In Arabian Nights by Tahir Shah, which describe his family’s experiences in moving from London to a supposedly jinn-inhabited home in Morocco.

Jinn in the Bible

In Judeo-Christian tradition, the word or concept of jinn as such does not occur in the original Hebrew text of the Bible, but the Arabic word ǧinn is often used in several old Arabic translations.

In several verses in those Arabic translations, the words jinn (ob) jann (al-Ǧānn), majnoon (Maǧnūn), and Iblīs) are mentioned as translations of familiar spirit or (ob) for jann and the devil or (daimónion) for Iblīs.

In Van Dyck’s Arabic translation of the Bible, these words are mentioned in Leviticus 19:31, Lev 20:6, 1 Samuel 28:3, 1 Sa 28:9, 1 Sa 28:7, 1 Chronicles 10:13, Gospel of Matthew 4:1, Mat 12:22, Gospel of Luke 4:5, Luk 8:12, Gospel of John 8:44 and other verses[citation needed] as well. Also, in the apocryphal book Testament of Solomon, Solomon describes particular demons whom he enslaved to help build the temple, the questions he put to them about their deeds and how they could be thwarted, and their answers, which provide a kind of self-help manual against demonic activity.

Protection from jinn

An amulet, talisman or what is referred to as a tawiz in Sufi circles is a form of protection against many forms of spiritual evil, including protection against the jinn. It is often worn around the neck in a pouch, close to the heart. One such popular amulet was said to have been given to Sheikh Abdullah Daghistani by Muhammad in a vision. In that vision he was instructed to give this amulet to people as a protection for them in the last days. The amulet contains a depiction of the Throne Room of Allah. The amulet contains theosophic names as well as the names of folk saints. It is widely held to be very miraculous and a protection to those who submit to Allah.

It is to be noted that Muslims believe that all protection and help only comes from Allah, as it is a central Islamic tenet to believe that there is no power nor might save God’s. Often, these sorts of practices are not widespread in the Islamic world and are mostly limited to certain tribal communities in remote areas. The Muslim faithful believe that reciting the Verse of the Throne (Quran 2:255) and the final three concise chapters of the Quran (chapters 112-114) are the most effective means of seeking protection from satanic whispers and evil creatures.

[3] So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. [4] And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: [5]And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. [6] And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

The “many waters” on which the “whore” (apostate church) sits are identified as “peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.” This great religious prostitute from the truth is identified and geographically located in Revelation 17:18 as “that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth. In John’s day that city was Rome. Today, the most widespread religious organization in the world has its tentacles spread across the earth from its headquarters in Rome.

The kings of all the earth have had continuous dealings with the great Vatican government of Rome down through the ages. The history of the Catholic Church has long been one of political involvement in the affairs of nations and kings. Many nations and kings have been intoxicated with her religious wine that dulls the conscience of lost souls.

In verse three John sees the “woman” setting on the back of a “scarlet colored beast.” This is the same beast described in previous chapters as having “seven heads and ten horns” – It is the Antichrist.

Verses four and five are perfect illustrations of all the wealth, pomp, power, ritual, and ceremony associated with the Catholic Church and world religion today. Verse six requires little comment – hundreds of volumes have been amassed by countless writers attesting to horrible killing and torture of true believers by the Catholic Church before and during the Reformation. One day she will answer for all long trail of blood of the saints.

The “woman” represents the great apostasy from worship in spirit and in truth. She rides on the Antichrist because she will support him after he drives Israel into the Negev. The world religious leader will be the false prophet described in the previous chapter. After this all the great world religious leaders will fall into line one by one. Only the third part of Israel driven into the Negev, of which the 144,000 sealed Israelites are a part, and true believers, will fail to accept him as being the Messiah sent by God. The “woman” is the Bride of Apostasy whose destruction is reported by John in Revelation 17:15-18.

Revelation 17:15-18 – And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. [16] And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. [17] For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled. [18] And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

The ten horns are ten Arab kings who will soon come against Israel led by the Antichrist, who is the eleventh horn on Daniel’s fourth beast.

Daniel 7:24-28 – And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. [25] And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

The ten Arab kings will accept the Antichrist as their leader “for God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.” The Prophet Mohammad loudly proclaimed he was God’s prophet, and he was supposedly called by the angel Gabriel. Today some 400 million followers of Allah are scattered across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and southeastern Europe, and they believe that Allah is God. Allah is a word compounded of the article “al” and the word “ilah,” which means “the God.” I believe some of the Catholic faith will accept the Antichrist as the “O Theos” (the God), and the Islamic faith will accept him as Allah (the God). Most of the many faiths would love to have a flesh and blood man to lead them, one who had built a Caliphate from Morocco to Indonesia. Many different faiths across the earth have multiple gods – some sects in India have hundreds of gods – but each sect always has one god who is more powerful than all the others. All the religions, both small and great, will believe that the beast is that one most powerful god in their worship system.

Unfortunately for the “woman,” the Arabs have always hated religious Christianity, and near the end of the tribulation period they will vent their full religious zeal on the religious woman of Rome. John attests to the woman’s final destruction by the sons of Allah in verse sixteen – “And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.”

Former Iranian Official: The Countdown To Attacking Israel Has Begun – ‘With Hopes Of Completely Eradicating [It] From The Planet’

In response to reports on a January 29, 2013 Israeli attack in Syria, Ali Reza Forghani, a supporter of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and former governor of Kish province, published an article titled “Countdown to an Attack on Israel,” calling on Tehran and Syria to take this golden opportunity for a retaliatory strike against Israel that will destroy it once and for all.

In the article, which was published on regime websites, Forghani stated that the war in Syria today is merely the prelude to a nuclear third world war between the “Axis,” led by the U.S., and the “Allies,” led by Iran, that will bring about the end of humanity.

This is not Forghani’s first call to destroy Israel. In a February 4, 2012 article titled “Iran Must Attack Israel by 2014,” he claimed that doing so was a religious obligation, and that Iran was capable of annihilating Israel in under nine minutes.

Previously, on June 10, 2012, a number of regime websites[ published an article by Forghani in which he called on the Islamic world to assert its right to possess nuclear weapons in order to create a balance of terror with its enemies. He wrote: “Since according to the fatwa of Imam Khomeini all Islamic countries are considered Islamic blood, the Islamic world must awaken from its hibernation and must disturb the sleep of
America and Israel, and must shout, ‘An an atomic bomb is our right!’

“Yes,” he continued, “nuclear weapons are a right – and if this right did not exist, Israel would have been destroyed forever 30 years ago… Nuclear weapons are necessary to prevent America from doing whatever it wants. In accordance with the words of Imam Khamenei [sic] ‘As we are attacked, so shall we respond,’ there is a need for a swift response on the atomic-bomb level. Atomic bomb now!”

Following is the translation of Forghani’s January 29, 2013:

“Iran Will Rush To The Aid Of Any Country That Attacks Israel And Ends Israel’s Story Once And For All”

“Israel has been warned that the ‘Allies’ in the Syria war will consider it [responsible] for any kind of foreign attack on Syria. Any form of attack on Syria will bring about a devastating attack on Israel. Based on this stated policy, Iran will rush to the aid of any country that attacks Israel and ends Israel’s story once and for all (with Allah’s help).

“This analysis is not aimed at comparing World War II with the war in Syria, but at using several well-known terms already familiar to our readers.

“The new ‘Axis’ includes Israel, America, France, Qatar, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia – countries which, according to the Roberto Pact (Rome, Berlin, Tokyo) can be defined as Axis countries in the Syria war. These countries are the aggressors, and they will strike the first blow.

“Israel is the coordinating center for the Axis countries which oppose Syria. [These] countries consider the current ruling circle in Syria to be depriving and harming their interests in the region. One example of this claim is the position taken by the U.S. following the Israeli attack on Syrian soil, [as expressed by] U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes. [He said:] ‘Syria should not further destabilize the region by transferring weaponry to Hizbullah.’

“Sergei Lavrov (the Russian foreign minister) has acknowledged that the attempt to depose the Assad regime, and change the regime, is part of a greater political game in the region – the ultimate target of which is Iran… In any case, as stated, Iran is the final target of the Axis machinations in the Syria war. The popular revolutions in the region… have an Islamic fragrance and tint; that is why only by destroying Iran can there be a spark of hope that these revolutions that imitate Islamic Iran will not spread to all corners of the earth.

“Of course, the Allies in the Syria war perceive Israel’s existence in the region in the same way – that is, that it conflicts with the existence of several governments and ideologies [in the region – i.e. those of Iran, Syria, and Hizbullah]. So, attacking and completely eradicating Israel from the planet is the only solution to this problem. If this problem isn’t resolved with this golden opportunity, it is not known when there may be another.

“The new Allies are Iran, Russia, Syria, and the Lebanese Hizbullah – countries that, much like the Allies in World War II, are defensive and will deliver the second strike. That is, they will defend [themselves] only after being attacked. These countries can be abbreviated as ‘Risl’ (Russia, Iran, Syria, Lebanon).

“One of the main differences between the Syria war and World War II is the number of major countries involved on both sides. In World War II, the Axis countries – the aggressor and invading countries – were the minority, and the Allies, the victims, were the majority.

“In the Syria war, it’s the reverse. The only victims are Syria and Iran, and just a few countries will come to their aid. But the stubborn rebellious countries that can no longer tolerate the policy inspired by Islamic Iran and Syria’s serving as a bridge between Iran and Hizbullah are more numerous. Even though there are fewer than 10 Axis countries in the Syria war, most of the neutral countries will repeatedly provide them with material and moral support.”

“[Then] World War III Will Erupt… And That Game Will Have No Winners… Once The War Escalates, The Threat Of [Nuclear] Weapons… Will Make The Other Side Launch A Nuclear War”

“Another important difference between World War II and the Syria war that will eventually lead to World War III, is the playing field. Unlike World War II, the Syria war began in a single country; the invading players [intend for it] to end in a second country, Iran.

“But the two wars are also similar: The Allies, with Iran at their center, will shift the game outside these two countries, so that the main game will begin [when] all the countries complying with the Axis interests, with America at their center, are targeted.

“[Then] World War III will erupt… and that game will have no winners. Both sides will lose, because some countries on both sides have nuclear weapons. Once the war escalates, the threat of these weapons… will make the other side launch a nuclear war.

“So nothing can be expected but the destruction of all humanity. But even before nuclear weapons are used, World War III could cost more than five times as many lives as World War II – some 260 million.”

Countdown To An Attack On Israel

“No sane researcher has yet managed to justify Israel’s desperate experiment in attacking Syria on its soil from the air… and we must thank Israel’s senior commanders… for providing Syria, and of course Iran, with this golden opportunity to attack Israel.

“A group of Allied commandos must be dispatched to Syria via [the Syrian port city of] Tartus to completely expel the terrorists [i.e. the rebels] from Syria, in order to [achieve] absolute security stability there. Naturally, after that we must equip and upgrade the Syrian forces for the final blow against Israel, [a blow that will continue] until it is totally destroyed. We must in no way repeat the mistake of the Gaza [war] – accepting a ceasefire.

“It was a mistake to accept the ceasefire with Israel during the Gaza [war]. I repeatedly said that Gaza must not do so, and that the Iranian statesmen shouldn’t have attempted to draw up a ceasefire. Accepting the ceasefire meant [granting] Israel new life, while the Israelis and their false government must not be [allowed] to breathe.

“The Israelis must have no rest, no tranquility. In the recent Gaza-Israel war, some 20 Israelis were killed and over 90 were wounded. Without this shameful event [i.e. Gaza’s agreement to a] ceasefire, there would have been more than 100 Israelis dead and thousands wounded. The Israelis would have lost their nerve, and would have left the occupied territories. Instead of planning an attack in Syria, Israel’s false government would have had a crisis of survival on its hands.”

The Doctrine Of Preemptive Attack According To The View Of The Shi’ite Imam Ali – “With Hopes Of Completely Eradicating Israel From The Planet”

“Because the Allied countries in the Syria war are Muslim, they must read Sermon No. 27 in [the book] Nahj Al-Balaghah [a collection of sermons attributed to the Shi’ite Imam Ali] to the Muslim statesmen and nations – not only out of courtesy, but because implementing [what it says] will ensure the security and happiness of the Muslim nations.

“[In this sermon,] Ali said: ‘…I called on you to fight your enemies – by day and by night, in secret and in the open. I said: Attack them before they fight you. I swear by God, every nation that is attacked on its own soil will be humiliated. But you [who heeded me not] have become weak, and your lot has been misery, and therefore the enemy has attacked you again and again, and conquered your lands… I swear by God, this reality in which the enemies are united in their lies and you are divided in your truth, sorrows and breaks the human heart. They attack you, and you do not attack them. They fight you, and you do not fight them. Such sins towards God satisfy your will. I swear by God that you are fleeing the sword.’

“I have several times declared my positive view of a preemptive attack on Israel – but now that Israel has officially attacked Syrian territory, there remains no excuse for not [waging] a total multipartite attack on Israeli soil, with hopes of completely eradicating Israel from the planet (Allah willing).”
