I came from General Douglas MacArthur’s hometown where MacArthur Park bears his name. He did not believe it was possible for a foreign power to sustain a victory over an Asian Continental country for a prolonged period of time. Since his death this principle has generally proven to be correct, with Afghanistan being the case rather than shining as the exception.

I doubt the last Middle East War will begin prior to the foreign troops being pulled out of Afghanistan.

(Reuters) – President Barack Obama’s top commander in Afghanistan will make recommendations about how quickly the United States should pull out of that long and costly war late this year, probably after November’s elections, according to a timetable given on Tuesday.

General John Allen, who commands U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said he would present recommendations for Obama on troop levels in 2013 and beyond during the last three months of this year, after assessing the military campaign following the departure of 33,000 U.S. troops due by October.

“Before the end of 2012 I intend to provide, through my chain of command, to the president a series of recommendations on the kind of combat power that I will need for 2013 and 2014,” Allen told the House Armed Services Committee.

The End of the Afghan War?

Mark your calendars. The War in Afghanistan entered its final phase on Sept. 18, 2012 with ISAF’s announcement that its forces will suspend partnering with the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) below the Kandak (battalion level).

The current draw down in ISAF forces (i.e. “combat” units coming home) is supposed to lead to a 10-year period of intensive ISAF mentorship of the ANSF combined with continued Special Operations targeting of Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters. Currently, ISAF evaluates ANSF units (at all levels) on a four level scale (from 1-4). An ANSF unit rated at Level 1 can hypothetically conduct its own operations without any ISAF mentorship or presence, whereas a unit at Level 4 needs almost constant ISAF mentorship/presence in order to achieve its objectives. Under the current rating scheme, ANSF units can only progress up the levels after they consistently demonstrate improved and independent operational proficiency over a lengthy period of evaluation. ISAF’s announcement ends that rating scheme entirely — and thus, effectively ends its legitimate training of the ANSF.

ISAF painstakingly pointed out that the new policy only means that its forces will end their partnership/training of the ANSF at the company level and shift all remaining resources to focus on training the Afghan Army Kandak (battalion) and Afghan Police District level commanders and staff. In essence, ISAF waved its magical wand and expects the entire ANSF to suddenly operate at Level 1 at all companies and below. The now (thankfully) dead CSTC-A tried the same scheme for several years with the Afghan National Police (ANP) starting in 2008 — and found that training units to arbitrary time standards produced grossly ineffective units. One only needs to look at the current state of the ANP to see the disastrous effects of the policy.

As a former mentor to the ANSF, I can attest that the bulk of their effective operations occur at the company level and below. Thus, ISAF cannot hope to build effective and competent ANSF forces without first ensuring that the Afghan Army and Police can function independent of ISAF mentorship at the company level. If the ANSF were an American football team, ISAF just announced that they will cease training the players (most of whom have never played football) and focus entirely on training the coaching staff, with the expectation that the team will win the Superbowl this year.

Without proficient Afghan National Security Forces to effectively combat a resurgent Taliban, the current Afghan government cannot hope to survive ISAF’s eventual total withdrawal. ISAF can try and spin this all it wants — but one cannot deny the benefit to the Taliban in halting (if not ending) effective ISAF mentorship to the ANSF. And, if the Taliban are truly behind the dramatic spike in Green-on-Blue attacks (i.e. the apparent cause behind ISAF’s announcement), then one must view the shift in ISAF policy as a major Taliban strategic victory.

Since that time it has been like a tennis ball going around in a tornado, ever changing its position. .It takes many months to get men and equipment from the U.S. to Afghanistan, just as it did to get them to Saudi Arabia in two Iraqi operations. The fact that we now have them in place, on the ground in Afghanistan, is the greatest deterrent to the final war of this age occurring there, as long as they are in place. We may, or may not, maintain a strong enough economy to keep them in the Middle East. We may have to withdraw them for economic reasons much earlier than Obama stated. I do not believe the last war will begin this year or in 2013.

The use of this technique is meant to empower the sovereign to control subjects, populations, or factions of different interests, who collectively might be able to oppose his rule. Machiavelli identifies a similar application to military strategy, advising in Book VI of The Art of War (Dell’arte della guerra), that a Captain should endeavor with every art to divide the forces of the enemy, either by making him suspicious of his men in whom he trusted, or by giving him cause that he has to separate his forces, and, because of this, become weaker.

The strategy of division and rule has been attributed to sovereigns ranging from Louis XI to the Habsburgs. Edward Coke denounces it in Chapter I of the Fourth Part of the Institutes, reporting that when it was demanded by the Lords and Commons what might be a principal motive for them to have good success in Parliament

I have been up and down this Negev-Sinai border many times and visited its Security Posts several times. I have also been along the northern Israel border with Lebanon and Syria and visited some of the UN Guard Posts along it. The DEBKAfile Excerpt indicates a high possibility of war beginning in 2013 along the northern border, but I believe Islam is not ready at this time, and the earliest I can see a war beginning is 2014 or 2015.

Washington’s Iran war game vs. real Iranian, Israeli war preparations

Ill-assorted figures this week cited 2013 as the year in which the United States was expected to go to war on Iran. Among them was Iran’s atomic commission director Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani, former US ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk, and players in the US-Iranian war game staged at the Saban Center for Middle East Policy in Washington, whose heads are close to US President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

This apparent US-Iranian concord was unusual but not fortuitous, say DEBKAfile analysts.

On the part of Washington, it had a distinct purpose, which was to demonstrate to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu that an Israeli attack before the US presidential election would be superfluous.

The message was played out in the Saban institute’s war game: The player representing Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the Americans are tired of the fight and they are led by a weak man with no stomach for the struggle.

The script then proves him wrong: On July 6, 2013, Iranian agents coming in from Venezuela blow up a hotel on the Caribbean island of Aruba killing 137 people, many of them American holidaymakers including nuclear physicists. It was clearly a revenge attack for the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists.

The next chapter of this scenario had President Obama, portrayed as reelected in November, ordering Iranian Revolutionary Guards headquarters in eastern Iran to be bombed, 40 Iranian security installations shut down by cyber warfare and Tehran warned that US intelligence had the names of Iranian agents in 38 countries and their lives were at risk.

Iran purportedly responds by blocking the Strait of Hormuz, through which the world receives a third of its oil. The players representing the US government then slap down a 24-hour ultimatum for Iran to halt its nuclear program or else face the destruction of all its facilities, along with the entire Iranian military deployment in the Persian Gulf.

Tehran fails to comply and the US and Iran are at war.

This scenario implicitly made the point that since the US election was only weeks off and America would most likely go to war with Iran next year anyway, Israel had no need to jump the gun before November, 2012.

This was most likely the answer Israel’s Defense Minister Ehud Barak received too when he met with Chicago Mayor and Obama’s former chief of staff Rahm Emanuel for lunch at City Hall Thursday, Sept. 20.

The only known result of their conversation was a gift by the mayor to the minister of a six-pack of Chicago’s famous Goose Island 312 beer. Whether Barak shared it with Netanyahu and whether the beer was to their taste was not revealed.

Apart from this message, the Saban Institute war game notably hinged on two basic premises while skipping a third.

The first was that American and Iranian leaders both acted on wrong strategic and intelligence assessments of the other’s intentions and therefore miscalculated each other’s responses. Had they realized this, the war might have been avoided.

A second working assumption was that Iran had scattered half of its stocked enriched uranium in dozens of places across the country to reduce their vulnerability to attack, while keeping the other half in one place. This was taken to signal qualified Iranian willingness for a diplomatic resolution of its controversy with the United States.

Where the Saban war game erred was in leaving the Syrian factor out of the equation.

DEBKAfile’s military sources point out that Syrian President Bashar Assad is using the same strategy as Iran for his chemical and biological arsenal. Half has been distributed and placed in the care of an estimated 20 Syrian army units; the other half reposes at fixed storage sites – a device indicating to Washington and Moscow that he is open to negotiating an end to the war before deciding to loose his weapons of mass destruction against Syrian rebels.

The Washington think tank’s war game fails to take into account that Iranian and Syrian steps are so closely synchronized that Syrian already looms large as the most likely venue for the approaching core event of a conflict pitting the US and Israel against Iran. Syria and Iran have become almost interchangeable against their shared foes.

Elite units of Iran’s al Qods, the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) external arm, are being airlifted into Syria and Lebanon, as the IRGC chief Gen. Ali Jafari, disclosed Sunday, Sept. 16. I

Iranian troops are now deployed on Israel’s northern and eastern borders.

Israel responded Wednesday, Sept. 19, with a snap military exercise, the largest the IDF has staged in many years, on its borders with Syria and Lebanon.

Not all the Israeli units taking part in the drill returned to home base when the drill was over. Substantial military strength, estimated at two divisions, is therefore building up and facing the Iranian troops across the border in Syria and Lebanon.

Indeed, that same Wednesday saw more than one telling event in the same incendiary context: Iran’s foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi paid an unscheduled visit to Damascus for talks with Assad on his way home from a meeting in Cairo with Egyptian, Turkish and Iraqi foreign ministers. They gathered on the initiative of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi for another go at resolving the Syrian disaster. Saudi Arabia which is deeply committed to backing the rebels was pointedly absent.

Iran played ball with Egypt for the purpose of lining up its diplomatic ducks for the war to come by putting together a potential Muslim bloc to stand against the US-Israel-Arab grouping. Tehran is looking ahead to the inevitable prospect of peace negotiations taking off amid the fury of war – or as soon as it ends.

Shortly after the Israeli drill, US intelligence officials accused Iran of “secretly transporting large quantities of weapons and military personnel, almost daily, under the cover of civilian aircraft – via Iraqi airspace – to aid embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.”

The accent on “almost daily” confirmed that a major buildup of Iranian military strength is in progress in Syria. Typically, Iran is disguising its actions by using civilian aircraft.

Hours after a deadly terror attack on the Israel- Egypt border, the chain of events which led to the killing of an Israel Defense Forces soldier and three terrorists on Friday afternoon is becoming clear.

An initial military investigation launched into the incident reveals that the terrorists took advantage of the arrival of African infiltrators and the fact that IDF soldiers left their post to offer them water.

Three terrorists emerged from behind a cliff, and opened fire on Artillery Corps soldiers securing the border fence construction from just 100 meters (328 feet) away.

The soldier killed in the attack has been identified as Netanel Yahalomi, 20, of the religious community of Nof Ayalon. He was hit on the spot.

According to the inquiry, the terrorists had gathered intelligence and followed the group of 15 African infiltrators. When the infiltrators arrived at the border, several soldiers left their post to offer them water.

The terrorists then emerged from their hiding spot, approached the four fighters who remained at the post and opened fire, killing Netanel Yahalomi
The Artillery Corps force fired back at the terrorists, killing one of them. The incident took place on a mountainous area on the Israel-Egypt border, where a fence is being constructed along an area of 17 kilometers (10.5 miles).

A force from the Caracal Battalion, which was busy capturing African infiltrators in the area, was immediately dispatched to the scene of the attack.

The force fired at the two remaining terrorists with a machine gun and hit them. An explosive device on one of the terrorists’ body was detonated, injuring another soldier. The soldier, who sustained light to moderate wounds, was rushed to the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba.

IDF Spokesperson Brigadier-General Yoav Mordechai said that the terrorists had been carrying many weapons on their bodies, including bullets, Kalashnikov rifles and grenades.

“They were on a major killing spree, but were killed within 15 minutes from the moment they fired the first shot,” he said.

Mordechai added that the terrorists were dressed in civilian clothes, and praised the force for its determination. He noted that it was unclear which organization the terrorists were affiliated with.

Immediately after the incident, the IDF spokesperson said that a major terror attack within Israeli territory had been thwarted.

Southern Command Chief Tal Russo arrived at the scene of the attack. IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Benny Gantz held an evaluation of the situation with senior IDF officers following the attack.

Egyptian intelligence officials said the attackers had crossed the border and that one of the three terrorists blew himself up inside Israel.

The Egyptian officials, speaking on condition of anonymity according to regulations, told the Associated Press that an intelligence team had been dispatched to Israel to inspect the bodies of the militants and was looking to take them back to Egypt for further investigation.

Egypt also boosted security on the Egyptian side of the border, they said.

A security source in Sinai estimated that the three terrorists killed in the attack belonged to the Mujahideen Shura Council organization, which is active in Sinai, or to Palestinian organization Ansar Beit al-Makdas, Egyptian newspaper al-Youm al-Saba’a reported.

The two organizations are affiliated with the global Islamic Jihad organization and the Salafi movement of Islam. According to the source, three other gunmen were injured in the attack.

Iran pours more troops into Syria, ready to target Israel from Syria and Lebanon

Iran continues to fly military personnel and quantities of weapons into Syria by civilian aircraft which cut through Iraqi airspace, American intelligence sources disclosed early Thursday, Sept. 20. UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon also said that, “Unfortunately, both [Syrian] sides, government and opposition forces, seem to be determined to see the end by military means.”

Clearly, Iran is augmenting its military involvement in the constantly escalating Syrian civil war, broadening it into a multinational conflict which threatens to drag Lebanon in, by means of the Iranian-Syrian ally, Hizballah.

The UN Secretary General’s statement implying that the two Syrian sides are determined to fight to the bitter end is echoed in Iran’s resolve to fight to the bitter end for Assad, on Syrian soil.

Tehran is not hiding its actions. Sunday, Sept. 16, Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Commander Gen. Ali Jafari said openly that Al Qods Brigades units were present and operational in both Syria and Lebanon.

No comment on this revelation has come from the US, Israel or Israel’s military (IDF) chiefs – notwithstanding its menacing import, namely, that Tehran is no longer hanging about and waiting for its nuclear program to be attacked in order to punish Israel, but is getting ready for a pre-emptive operation.

Still, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak have chosen silence in the face of what any other nation would regard as a casus belli: the open deployment of enemy forces on its northern and eastern borders.

This must have been the catalyst for the IDF’s surprise two-division strength drill Wednesday on Israel’s Golan border with Syria. But the IDF spokesman sounded almost apologetic when he explained that the exercise had nothing to do with the events in
Syria or with Hizballah, and that it was no more than a routine drill for testing preparedness.

DEBKAfile’s military sources say that, in the current climate, no military operation by any army on the Syrian border – especially one of this magnitude – may be regarded as “routine.” Only a week ago, the Golani Brigade concluded a large military exercise in northern Israel including the Golan. That sort of frequency must have operational connotations: The IDF is evidently keeping the army on the move and in a constant state of readiness to fight a real war without delay on terrain made familiar by repeated war games.

IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Benny Gantz has a penchant for expressing himself through symbols, his method of overcoming the restrictions placed on his tongue by military and other constraints.

On New Year’s Eve last week, the general handed military correspondents a small gift: The Hebrew edition of the American writer Richard David Bach’s “There’s No Such Place as Far Away.”

For the Golan drill Wednesday, he decided to attach Maj. Gen. (res.) Nati Sharoni, chief artillery officer in the 1973 Yom Kippur War, to his party of advisers and observers.
The book was a clear message to Tehran and doubting Thomases at home that the IDF is fully capable of an operation against Iran’s nuclear program and of successfully accomplishing any mission far from its shores.

Gen. Sharoni’s presence at the Golan exercise, and the exercise itself, was a warning to Iran, Hizballah and Syria that they will be disappointed if they hope to catch Israel unready, as it was by the surprise attack which almost overcame the IDF 39 years ago before the tide of war was turned back against Egypt.

THEY WIIL BE CAUGHT UP TO HEAVEN TO BE JUDGED FOR THEIR LABORS BY CHRIST AT A JUDGMENT FOR REWARDS AND REBUKES. THEY WILL RETURN TO EARTH WITH JESUS AT HIS SECOND ADVENT TO BEGIN HIS MILLENNIAL REIGN.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been digging himself into a political hole since early last year, when he announced a strategy of seeking recognition of Palestinian statehood by the UN and a reconciliation with rival Hamas. The recognition bid flopped last fall in the UN Security Council, where the Palestinians failed to obtain even the eight votes needed for a simple majority.

During this time Abbas has mostly refused negotiations with Israel. Israel has offered the PA a number of concessions in exchange for renewing the peace process, including prisoner releases and a potentially lucrative natural gas concession, but Abbas has not agreed. Instead, he will renew the UN initiative. Not just the Obama administration but also friendly Arab governments, such as that of Jordan, have counseled Abbas that the push for recognition would be self-defeating. Negotiations with Israel are the only realistic path to Palestinian statehood. Abbas’ refusal to accept that fact might prove to be his undoing. (Washington Post)

Religious fanatics who are easily offended by those outside of their religion who violate the rules of their religion cannot serve as censors in democratic societies. The threat or fear of violence should not become an excuse or justification for restricting freedom of speech.

People who have come of age in repressive regimes which do not permit any expressions disfavored by the government may not understand that by not censoring such speech, the American government does not place its imprimatur upon it. For example, when Iranian newspapers publish anti-Semitic diatribes, the views expressed in those diatribes are the views of the government. Not so with democratic states. “Obama, Obama, we are all Osama” – the crowd chanted outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Sept. 11. In Egypt, 75% of Muslims do not believe that Arabs carried out the 9/11 attacks, according to a 2011 Pew poll. Many believe that it was either Israel, the U.S. government, or both. The idea that the U.S. attacked itself is buttressed by preachers in mosques, on satellite television channels and in glossy Arabic books.

The West is viewed through a hodgepodge of conspiracy theories, half-truths and a selective reading of history. The U.S. and the West are widely seen as waging a war on Muslims. In most Arab countries, citizens require government permission to produce films. For many Arabs, it is inconceivable that U.S. citizens are not under the same controls.

Attacking the U.S. has become part of the political culture in much of the Middle East. To challenge it is to be a labeled a “sellout,” a “traitor,” or a “Zionist agent,” and to court social isolation. Yet the same U.S. embassies that were attacked were surrounded almost daily by long lines of people applying for visas to enter the U.S.
