Lyon Sprague de Camp (November 27, 1907 – November 6, 2000) was an American author. In a writing career spanning 60 years, he wrote over 100 books. He “was widely regarded as an imaginative and innovative writer from the late 1930’s through the late 1940’s.
In politics and sociology, divide and rule (derived from Latin: divide et impera) (also known as divide and conquer) is a combination of political, military and economic strategy of gaining and maintaining power by breaking up larger concentrations of power into chunks that individually have less power than the one implementing the strategy. The concept refers to a strategy that breaks up existing power structures and prevents smaller power groups from linking up.
The maxims divide et impera and divide ut regnes were utilised by the Roman ruler Caesar and the French emperor Napoleon. There is the example of Gabinius parting the Jewish nation into five conventions, reported by Flavius Josephus in Book I, 169-170 of The Wars of the Jews (De bello Judaico).[ Strabo also reports in Geography, 8.7.3[2] that the Achaean League was gradually dissolved under the Roman possession of the whole of Macedonia, owing to them not dealing with the several states in the same way, but wishing to preserve some and to destroy others.
In modern times, Traiano Boccalini cites “divide et impera” in La bilancia politica, 1,136 and 2,225 as a common principle in politics. The use of this technique is meant to empower the sovereign to control subjects, populations, or factions of different interests, who collectively might be able to oppose his rule. Machiavelli identifies a similar application to military strategy, advising in Book VI of The Art of War (Dell’arte della guerra), that a Captain should endeavor with every art to divide the forces of the enemy, either by making him suspicious of his men in whom he trusted, or by giving him cause that he has to separate his forces, and, because of this, become weaker.
The strategy of division and rule has been attributed to sovereigns ranging from Louis XI to the Habsburgs. Edward Coke denounces it in Chapter I of the Fourth Part of the Institutes, reporting that when it was demanded by the Lords and Commons what might be a principal motive for them to have good success in Parliament

The “Divide and Rule” or “Divide and Conquer” tactic, long used in military operations, can be used in secular institutions, political parties, religious groups, and individual local churches.
I Peter 5:8 – Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
II Corinthians 2:11 – Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
Being familiar with individual Missionary Baptist Churches for 76 years, being Pastor of one in Dardanelle Arkansas for more than 38 years, and having preached in more than 600 of them in the contiguous U.S., Lithuania, Rumania, Kenya, Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, and Mexico, I assure you it is the primary tool the devil uses to separate each local, visible church into small groups that don’t like each other, and they either leave the church, split it, or stay in it and make everyone miserable. The Devil works on individual members to do it. Only the love of God in them can stop it if individual members will respond to his Spirit in them, and pray his will be done in the situation.
The invisible Devil and his demonic angels use this military tactic to divide members into factions because they are babes in Christ, and imagine all sorts of things about the other factions. The Devil is referred to as the Accuser of the Brethren. The accusatory attitude is quite evident in a babe in Christ.
I Corinthians 1:11-15 – For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. [12] Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. [13] Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? [14] I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; [15] Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
I Corinthians 3:1-9 – And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. [2] I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. [3] For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? [4] For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? [5] Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? [6] I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. [7] So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. [8] Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. [9] For we are labourers together with (of) God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.
Ephesians 2:22 – In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
Ephesians 5:29-32 – For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: [30] For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. [31] For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. [32] This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
