Sinai militias cut Egypt-Israel trade ties amid declining security

The claim Friday by Field Marshall Mohamed Tantawi, head of the military junta ruling Egypt, of “complete security on the Sinai Peninsula” was belied Monday, Oct. 10, by the Israeli Counterterrorism Bureau’s warning against travel to Sinai for the coming Sukkot festival. Israelis already there were urged to leave at once.

While Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his government are leaning over backwards to pretend business with Egypt is back to normal after a mob burned and sacked the Israel embassy in Cairo on Sept. 10, this could not be farther from the truth.

To this day, the Israeli ambassador has not returned to his post and a skeleton staff of four Israeli officials is working from one of the foreign embassies in secret to prevent another mob attack. Jerusalem has also withheld complaint about the final stoppage of Egyptian natural gas supplies since the Sinai pipeline was sabotaged for the sixth time on Sept. 27.

The stoppage is costly. Israel must shell out about $2.7 million a day on substitute fuel for its power stations to make up for the missing 45 percent of its needs which Egypt is under contract to supply.

As to Tantawi’s claim of “complete security in Sinai”, for three months, Israel has kept substantial combat strength in place to keep the South safe from

the Hamas, Jihad Islami and al Qaeda cells running loose in Sinai and awaiting their chance for another cross-border incursion for armed attacks or abductions.

The PMO had no choice but to warn Israeli travellers of their peril from terrorists in Sinai ahead of the festival. But a high-ranking military source told DEBKA: “The Counterterrorism Bureau might just as well have extended the travel advisory for Sukkot to cover the entire region of southern Israel between Eilat, Mitzpe Ramon and up to the Nitzana border crossing between Israel and Egypt.”

The Supreme Military Council ruling Egypt since Hosni Mubarak was overthrown is not exactly in control in mainland Egypt either, including the capital.

Sunday night, Oct. 9, a Coptic demonstration outside the state TV station to protest the authorities’ failure to protect their churches from radical Islamic attacks ended with 24 dead of whom 17 were Copts and more than 200 injured.

The Copts, who make up more than one-tenth of Egypt’s 85 million inhabitants, were then attacked by hoodlums wielding clubs, stones and machetes.

But the security forces turned their guns on the Copts and drove tanks against them – not the rowdies shouting Islam, Islami!

Egyptian Prime Minister Esssam Sharaf Monday accused “foreign and domestic meddlers” of hatching a “dirty conspiracy.” But he did not address the spreading doubts about Egypt’s ability to effect a transition to a pluralist democracy when Islamist thugs rule the streets without fear or the consequent rapid decline in national security.

I began my military career in 1951, the same year General Douglas Macarthur gave his famous farewell address to Congress. He was my favorite American General of World War II.. I will never forget what he said concerning the attempt to maintain a permanent victory by US ground forces connected to the Asian mainland lying East of 40 degrees East Longitude.

I believe the classification of foreign forces, such as the US, includes any ground forces from any country not on the Asian Mainland .

The political, geophysical, and military positioning of Syria, Iran, and Iraq, from a prospective of having world influence, literally stinks. But the position of Egypt’s Suez Canal, and Cairo, her capital, is outstanding. The antichrist is supposed to be a man of genius in all areas. That being the case, he would be worse than a military academy dropout were he not to take the Suez Canal, and then make Cairo his empire’s capital.

The three most “precious things” in Egypt are: the Suez Canal, the Nile River and its Delta, and Cairo, its capital. He will conquer the Suez Canal zone and all of Egypt. So just what is Egypt? Many are inclined to establish it as the land bordered on the north by the Mediterranean Sea, on the west by Libya, on the south by Sudan, on the southeast by the Red Sea, and on the northeast by its Sinai border with Gaza and Israel’s Negev. And, geographically, that is quite correct.

However, in reality, that is not Egypt. The real Egypt, where her people live, is much, much, smaller.

Egypt is the land along her north and east coastlines up to about two miles inland, the Nile Delta, and the land along the Nile River extending about fifteen miles either side of its banks.

The antichrist will send messages to leaders of two of the original 10 nations confederated with him, namely Libya and Sudan, requesting them to mass their troops along the northern coastal border with Libya, and along the border where the Nile enters Egypt from Sudan. This will cause the diversion of some Egyptian troops away from Cairo and the Suez Canal in order to protect their western and southern borders. And this will allow the antichrist to rapidly push across the Suez Canal into Cairo and along her western and eastern coastlines, then to quickly progress southward down the Nile with little resistance. I believe he will control Egypt within two weeks after he reaches the Suez Canal.

Once he has conquered Egypt, he will make an assessment of his geopolitical position. After having done so, he would be a military fool to return to his home country.

He will establish his capital at Cairo, and will remain there for more than three years. After three years he will receive news that causes him to quickly return to Jerusalem.

If a military leader plans to put down his roots for a while, what would be one of his major concerns? The relationship he has with the rulers of the nations that are on his immediate borders. That is, how sure he is they will not pull a surprise attack on him. I believe the kings (rulers) of Lebanon, Libya, and Sudan will be subdued by being personally plucked up by the roots out of their positions of leadership in their own countries, and replaced by puppet rulers who do exactly as the antichrist directs.

Daniel 11:43 – But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

“At his steps” means “companionship” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance & Wilson’s O.T. Word Studies). This expression also appears in Judges 4:10, where it appears as “at his feet.”

Judges 4:10 – And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him.

It represents an Old Testament word picture of a conquered leader or country laying yearly tribute payments before the king of the conquering country, who is setting on his throne, and the tribute is being placed at his feet on the steps leading up to his throne. So I believe the antichrist will place his puppet rulers on the thrones of Lebanon, Syria, and Sudan as those who are in “companionship” with him.

Ten years ago, Taliban fighters in their thousands abandoned power, fled their military posts and melted away into the countryside, allowing Western-led forces to capture Afghanistan without a fight.

Today, that rag-tag militia has evolved into a sophisticated guerrilla force which has recently hit several high-value targets and all but derailed American plans for a smooth and successful drawdown of troops.

Significantly, they have achieved this despite the absence of a charismatic leader, a unified chain

of command and a politico-economic vision.

So how did they do it?

Until three years after their government was ousted by coalition forces in October 2001, there was little Taliban activity in Afghanistan.

“Taliban were initially welcomed by the Afghan people for bringing a four-year long civil war to an end, but when they started to implement their strict Islamic code, the people got fed up,” says Brig (retired) Mehmood Shah, a former head of security for Pakistan’s north-western tribal areas.

“People welcomed the Americans [because] they saw them as their liberators.

There was no room for the Taliban to stage a comeback immediately.”

By 2006, however, the Taliban had infiltrated large parts of the south – especially the provinces of Zabul, Kandahar and Helmand.

By 2008, they were spreading out north towards Kabul.

Brig Shah says the Americans made two mistakes which squandered their advantage.

“They focused on military objectives instead of stabilisation and development. And they soon went to fight a war of choice in Iraq, abandoning the war of necessity that had brought them to Afghanistan.”

The lack of reconstruction, and rampant corruption among government officials at a time when millions of refugees were returning from Iran and Pakistan, led to widespread disenchantment and fuelled insurgency, he says.

Sanctuary in Pakistan

But many analysts also point to the role of Pakistan, from where the Taliban had emerged in 1994, and where most of them fled in 2001.

Many feel the current Afghan insurgency was born in the Pakistani tribal region of Waziristan.

While the rest of Afghanistan was quiet, they say, Waziristan was alive with Taliban activity that then made banner headlines around the world.

Pakistan sent troops to the border but did not push the militants out

In 2002, and again in 2004, there were skirmishes between the Taliban and Pakistani troops, which were followed by a series of peace deals with the army that left the Taliban virtually in control of most of Pakistan’s tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan.

Most analysts agree – whether publicly or in private – that Pakistan’s security establishment allowed the Taliban to turn Waziristan into a militant sanctuary despite having the capacity to eliminate them.

“I think the military was divided on the issue. It tolerated them, and also helped them,” says Dr Hasan Askari Rizvi, a defence analyst.

Coalition troops suffered their earliest casualties in south-eastern Afghanistan, just across the border from Waziristan.

It was the fighting in the south-east, and later in the north-east – in Afghanistan’s Kunar province, which is adjacent to the Pak

istani tribal districts of Bajaur and Mohmand – which took up most of their attention during 2002-06.

These developments eclipsed the concentration of Taliban fighters in Pakistan’s south-western province of Balochistan, who started to quietly infiltrate Zabul, Kandahar and Helmand provinces from Toba Kakar, Chaman, Quetta and Chaghai areas.

This development remained unattended both by the Pakistani military and coalition troops in Afghanistan.

The results were predictable enough.

Western officials admit that until 2008-09, coalition forces in the south were unable to hold areas which were important for the Taliban – such as large parts of central Kandahar and southern Helmand where the Taliban set up bomb-making factories, arms caches and defensive positions – and at the same time protect their own lines of communication.

‘Punjabi Taliban’

Since the “troop surge” announced by President Obama in 2010, coalition forces have been able to dislodge the Taliban from their entrenched positions in Kandahar and Helmand.

But the insurgency has now spread wider, to areas around the capital, Kabul, and even to the formerly peaceful provinces of northern Afghanistan.

The Taliban now seem to be relying more on suicide bombings, and spectacular gun-and-bomb attacks to hit targets of great psychological value.

And there is an unending supply of new – and better trained – fighters entering Afghanistan from Pakistani areas, notably Waziristan.

Credible sources tell the BBC that these fighters are mainly Pakistanis, locally called the Punjabi Taliban, who specialise in gun-and-bomb attacks and constitute a major part of the Waziristan-based Haqqani network.

According to these sources, since 2009 these fighters have been travelling up to the border in Pakistani military vehicles, presumably to avoid missile strikes by CIA-operated drones.

A Pakistani military source in the region admits collaboration with these fighters.

The army spokesman, Maj-Gen Athar Abbas, rejects this as “malicious and fabricated”.

“Nothing can be farther from the truth,” he wrote back in a recent text message to me.

But since the recent accusations by US officials that some attacks in Kabul may have been ordered by Pakistan’s ISI intelligence service, questions over the military’s actual role in the Afghan insurgency are now being raised in various quarters within Pakistan.

Many in the West have long held that the key to peace in Afghanistan lies with the Pakistani military.

The coming months will show if that is really the case, and whether Pakistan agrees to comply with the demands of the international community.

Targeted assassinations now dominate Bashar Assad’s savage confrontation with the popular opposition to his rule.

Friday, Oct. 7, Mashaal Tammo, 53, the popular head of the opposition Kurdish Future Party and former member of parliament, was murdered by masked men who burst into his home in Qamishli, northern Syria.

At his funeral attended by 50,000 mourners, clashes with security forces left five people dead.

For the first time in seven months since President Bashar Assad embarked on his bloody crackdown on dissent, the White House has called on him to “step down now before taking his country farther down this very dangerous path.”

Spokesman Jay Carney’s wording implied that Syria was set on the path to civil war in the wake of the murder of Mashaal Tammo, the popular head of the opposition Kurdish Future Party and former member of parliament. Friday, Oct. 7, killing him and seriouslyl injuring his son.

Even after Moscow along with Beijing vetoed UN sanctions against the Syria, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Friday that the Syrian leadership would have to go if it was incapable of conducting reforms and did not stop shooting demonstrators.

While the Syrian News Agency attributed the murder to “an armed terrorist group,” DEBKAfile’s intelligence sources disclose it was the work of a death squad run by

the Syrian Air Force Intelligence Directorate commanded by Jamil Hassan. The largest and most powerful of Syria’s “intelligence” branches, this directorate’s function is not espionage but safeguarding the Assad family at home and abroad.

A SAFID officer is therefore posted in every Syrian Arab Airlines office outside the country.

On the background leading up to the assassination, DEBKAfile reports: Meshaal Tammo stood out as one of the most innovative and audacious leaders of the anti-Assad opposition movement. He was also one of the most principled. Although elected to the Syrian National Council, the new opposition leadership established in Istanbul last week, he refused to travel to Turkey for a role in the external campaign against the regime telling his followers that this was a Syrian revolt in which foreign elements should not be involved.

Four months earlier, he declined to join the “reformist delegation” Assad invited to Damascus in July, ostensibly to discuss political reforms which turned out to be sham.

He let it be known that Syria’s 2.5 million Kurds – 11 percent of the population, mostly Sunnis and the largest non-Arab minority – did not support the Assad regime but were not in active revolt against it. The Kurdish minority held occasional quiet rallies in its areas but abstained from violent rioting. This was a big help to Assad: It meant he could avoid detaching military and security forces for quelling Kurdish outbreaks and focus on the crackdown of uprisings in other parts of the country.

Yet the Tammo assassination could not have taken place without

the personal say-so of Bashar Assad. So why did he condemn the Kurdish leader to be assassinated at this time?

1. Two weeks ago, armed Syrian rebels began to pick off prominent regime officials in Aleppo, Idlib, Homs and on their travels on the highways linking them. Among the victims were senior medical hospital staff and university lecturers who were suspected of informing the authorities of the presence of wounded protesters in the hospitals and fingering anti-government student protesters.

Sunday, Oct. 2, armed men murdered the son of Syria’s Grand Mufti Ahmad Hassoun, a high-profile Assad supporter, and a senior university professor.

They were riding in the same car when it was attacked.

The Tammo assassination was the regime’s reprisal for the two deaths.

The contest between the regime and the opposition has shifted in the last two weeks from street confrontations between massed protesters and government forces backed by tanks – a contest in which Assad has more or less gained the upper hand – to a shadow war of reciprocal targeted assassinations of prominent figures on both sides.

2. Like many other personages in the Middle East, the late Kurdish leader also served intelligence agencies in clandestine, backdoor capacities.

Because there are many Syrian fighters in the Turkish rebel Kurdish Workers Party, the PKK, Tammo often acted as its go-between with the Turkish intelligence agency, the MIT, in an effort to end Ankara’s war on the Kurds or at least douse the flames.

By cutting this valuable channel of communications between Turkey and the PKK, Bashar Assad wrought his revenge on Ankara for the Erdogan government’s policy against him. He was especially incensesd by the big mobilization exercise the Turkish army is staging on the Syrian border up until Thursday, Oct.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that by striking down a Kurdish leader, Assad may find he is playing with fire. The clashes Saturday at his funeral attended by a vast crowd of angry Kurds demanding the Syrian ruler’s overthrow may spark internecine violence in Syria and across the Kurdish populations stretching across Iraq, Iran and Turkey in support of

their Syrian brothers.

I had to get to a doctor.

It started with a tingling sensation in my right arm a few minutes after President Obama began to speak at the United Nations. The feeling in my arm grew constantly worse the deeper Obama got into his speech. There were remarks that seemed to be laced with anti-Semitism, conjuring up unfounded tales from dark periods, libels about how the Jews supposedly controlled the world economy and ran the world according to their interests. I could hardly believe it: the president of the United States himself takes the stage in front of the world’s leaders and presents a conspiracy theory better suited to the peoples of the Orient, holding that Zionism is dictating an old-new world order.

“Disgraceful,” I muttered occasionally during the speech, as I scratched my painful arm. A pinkish stain emerged on my skin, and aloe vera gel didn’t help quell the raging fire.

By the morning after the speech, the pink stain had turned deep red and the pain in my arm was getting worse all the time. “You have to see a doctor,” my wife said. “It might be contagious, that thing.”

“It’s probably an insect bite,” I said, shrugging off her diagnosis before leaving for work. “I’ll put a little Fenistil on it and it’ll go away fast.”

During the whole drive to work I heard journalists, commentators and the prime minister’s people celebrating the U.S. president’s speech as though it were a national victory and a diplomatic achievement for the Jewish people. I couldn’t believe my ears. How could such smart people forgive the president’s inflammatory remarks so easily? Didn’t they understand that the man had resuscitated the Elders of Zion? Was their command of English so poor that they could interpret his speech as a declaration of support?

If so, we are in a bad way: Concrete danger lurks and the Jews all around are once more acting as usual, thinking it will all blow over. How could they forget the power of words, the power of strong leaders whose oratory enflames the masses? The blood boiled in my veins – and the skin on my right arm started to burn so fiercely that tears welled up. The Jews are in mortal danger; someone has to open the eyes of the complacent masses.

“Sabah alhir,” the guard at the entrance greeted me on the wrong morning of the year, even though I had never exchanged a word with him before. “Sabah alhir,” he repeated in a terrible accent, which for some reason

infuriated me.

“Never,” I retorted, “but never, ever, speak to me in Arabic.

Got it?”

I don’t know what came over me that morning. Usually I am polite to colleagues at work and to strangers generally. But on that morning of the day after the speech, I could not tolerate a word in Arabic. Here they come, rising against us to destroy us, and the world’s strongest leader takes their side and declares unabashedly that he, like the Arabs, is afraid of the Jews.

On that Thursday evening the pains wouldn’t let me fall asleep – pains in my arm and pains over the future of the Jewish people. That’s how it is: so many years of life amid this people have made me almost one of their sons. Jewish history has become an integral part of my history. So how can I fall asleep when the Palestinian president is scheduled to speak the next day and hurl mud at the country I live in and

at the nation within which I breathe?

Which is exactly what the Palestinian archenemy did. He stood on the platform, puffed with pride, and with Obama’s speech as a tailwind he demanded shamelessly to establish a national home for the Arabs and talked about his right and the right of those like him to self-determination.

True, it was expected, but it still hurt like sharp knives plunged into the flesh, especially the flesh of my arm, which broke out in blisters as the world’s leaders applauded, ostensibly in favor of the Palestinians, but obviously aiming their applause mainly against the Jews.

That’s it, it’s lost. Nothing will be able to help us against the whole world. The fix was in.

No one will believe the truth now, no one will believe our prime minister even if he cries authentic tears when he tells about our treatment of the Palestinians. No one in this stubborn, uncaring world will believe it when we describe the full equality, the upholding of rights, the fair and equitable distribution of resources that this country grants the Palestinians.

If he had any self-respect, the Palestinian president, he would hand the keys back to the Israeli prime minister on the UN dais. If he had an iota of honesty, he would call for dismantling the Palestinian Authority and forgo the aspiration to establish a state. If so, Israel and the Jewish people would take leadership and responsibility and would get the opportunity to prove what lessons they have learned from the past, to prove that everyone is equal before the law and before the authorities. The world would see how for every Jewish settlement that is established, two Palestinian settlements are established; and how for every liter of water that a Jewish household gets, a Palestinian household gets twice as much.

But who will believe now that the Jew can be egalitarian? Who will believe, after these two speeches, that the Palestinians are living a free and tranquil life? Who will believe that the Jews here do not differentiate between one human being and another, between blood and blood?

“It’s a blood libel!” I cried out to the applauding world and scratched my arm until it bled.

GOP: Obama, Biden Incite Wall Street Protests

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are under increasing attack for egging on the burgeoning Occupy Wall Street protest that has spread to cities across the country.

Senior Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah said he believes comments Obama made about “running Republicans out of town” could end up turning the protests ugly.

“We are going to have riots in this country because of what these people are doing,” he warned.

Hatch said Obama’s words coupled with by Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa’s Labor Day speech in which he called tea party members “sons of bitches” who should be “taken out” could incite violence.

“They are going to get people very angry and sooner or later people who basically are dependent upon the federal government and are about to be cut back, yeah, you are going to have lots of problems,” Hatch told reporters in Salt Lake City, one of many places that have seen protests.

Fellow Republican Sen. Rand Paul joined in the attack on the White House, calling Obama’s comments “inflammatory,” and saying the protesters reminded him of the Paris mob during the French Revolution.

“I see the president’s rhetoric of envy inflaming the public,” the Kentucky senator told Fox News’ Judge Andrew Napolitano.”

“I hope ultimately it doesn’t result in lawlessness where they say, ‘Gosh those nice iPads through the window should be mine and why don’t I throw a brick through the window to get them because rich people don’t deserve to have them when I can’t have one.’”

Obama said during his Thursday press conference that voters will “run Republicans out of town” if they refuse to pass his jobs bill. He then expressed sympathy for the Occupy Wall Street movement which started in lower Manhattan three weeks ago. He said it “expresses the frustrations that the American people feel.”

“We had the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression, huge collateral damage all throughout the country, all across Main Street, and yet you’re still seeing some of the same folks who acted irresponsibly trying to fight efforts to crack down on abusive practices that got us into this problem in the first place,” Obama said.

“People are frustrated and the protesters are giving voice to a more broad-based frustration about how our financial system works.”

Biden likened the protests to the birth of the tea party. “What is the core of that protest?” he asked. “The core is: The bargain has been breached. The core is the American people do not think the system is fair, or on the level. That is the core is what you’re seeing with Wall Street.

“There’s a lot in common with the tea party,” he said at the Washington Ideas Forum. “The tea party started, why? TARP. They thought it was unfair.”

Biden is not the only one likening the movement to the tea party. The Los Angeles Times asked whether the movement is “a tea party for Democrats.”

The idea was shot down by Tea Party Express chairwoman Amy Kremer. She told Britain’s Guardian newspaper the protesters were like “a kid having a temper tantrum because their parents won’t buy them the whole ice-cream store.

“Their demands are ridiculous, absurd.” Kremer added. “This isn’t Wall Street’s fault. It’s Washington’s fault – and that’s where they should focus their efforts.”

But David Webb of Manhattan-based Tea Party 365 believed there are similarities.

“The transport unions are getting behind it, rabble rousing and agitating, moveon.org is imposing its progressive agenda on it,” he told the Guardian.

“I accept that there will always be institutions or individuals who want to take advantage of any grass-roots movement,” added Webb. “They tried to take advantage of us, but by and large we said no. We don’t yet know whether Occupy Wall Street will do the same.”

The Occupy Wall Street protests have spread to cities including Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver and Tampa in the past week. Although ostensibly an anti-big business demonstration, it has attracted groups concerned with a wide range of left wing issues.

Jonathan Collegio who works for Karl Rove’s American Crossroads office in Washington told Newsmax that protesters near his 14th Street office had signs ranging from “Voting is a Hoax – Wake Up” to “Jail Obama” to “The military budget is KILLING Washington State!” and even “Stop Cheating Movie Goers.”

“It’s just your generic left wing protest,” said Collegio. “It reminded me of those World Bank/IMF protests from about 10 years ago, where the exact cause was nebulous, and the protests were instead a cornucopia of disparate left wing causes from veganism to anarchy.”

Tea party aligned Rep. Paul Broun of Georgia agreed. “They don’t know why they’re there. They’re just mad,” he told ABC’s Top Line.

“Now the unions seem to be weighing in and trying to subvert that anger into a political power to try to re-elect a president whose policies are just totally ignorant and incompetent about the economy and how to create jobs and how to create freedom in this country.”

Radio host Rush Limbaugh described the protesters as Obama’s base. “He expressed his solidarity because those are his campaign foot soldiers down there. He can’t turn his back on them this close to the elections,” Limbaugh said.

Leading Republicans have also bashed the movement. Presidential candidate Herman Cain said he believed the whole protest movement has been “planned and orchestrated to distract from the failed policies of the Obama Administration.

“Don’t blame Wall Street, don’t blame the big banks, if you don’t have a job and you’re not rich, blame yourself. It is not someone’s fault if they succeeded, it is someone’s fault if they failed.”

And Majority House leader Eric Cantor called the protesters “a mob” saying he was becoming “increasingly concerned” about the growing movement.
