Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu might not have been wholeheartedly committed to a peace deal with the Palestinians, but upon taking office, several factors tugged him in that direction.

He imagined that with creative ideas he might sway Mahmoud Abbas to move in directions the Palestinian leader had not foreseen.

Plus, history beckoned, as Netanyahu caught a glimpse of himself as the man who finally would bring recognition and security to Israel.

Getting together with Abbas has had the perverse effect of drawing the two men further apart. Netanyahu now senses that novel ideas will have little purchase on a man with secure convictions, and that substantive gaps between the two sides are far larger than he had anticipated or hoped.

Two years ago, Abbas also harbored a faith of sorts. Abbas faced a heroic task for which he needed help from all. He got it from virtually none.

Belief in the U.S. soon started to fade, a victim of Washington’s serial tactical misjudgments and inability to live up to its promises.

Abbas felt betrayed, too, by Arab regimes that had pledged their support only to desert him at the first opportunity. On the domestic front, there is no political weight or momentum behind the negotiations. Instead, there is at best apathy, at worst outright skepticism.

Netanyahu’s and Abbas’ disillusionment is not merely a crisis. Short of an unexpected and seismic shift, it will represent, in more ways than one, the end of a road.

WHAT IS THE NATIONALITY OF THE ANTICHRIST?

Part 5

Micah 5:1-4 – Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek. [2] But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

[3] Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel. [4] And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.

These verses, exposited in Parts 1 through 4, were written more than 700 years before the birth of Christ. And yet they present: Bethlehem as His birthplace, His rejection as ruler over Israel, His last Passover in the daughter of troops Jerusalem, His head beatings by the troops of Pontius Pilate, Herod, and the High Priest, His rejection as the judge of Israel, His Father’s siege against Israel because of their rejection of the Son (which has lasted some 2000 years), Christ’s temporary rejection of Israel, His Second Advent as Messiah after Israel’s travail of 1260 days in the Negev Wilderness, at which time His brethren will return with Him to the nation of Israel, and the first 1000 years of His eternal kingdom, which phases into the final heaven age when the present earth and heavens pass away.

Micah 5:5 – And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men.

Now, in verse 5, we find that “this man” will himself “be the peace” because He personally brings it in by Himself when he returns to be “great unto the ends of the earth” for 1000 years. “This man” who brings “the peace” of a thousand years is, of course, Jesus Christ. He is the primary contextual subject from verses 1 through 5. What happens to motivate His return to bring in the millennial reign is the movement of the Assyrian into the land of Israel. It is the final defeat and destruction of “the Assyrian” that will mark Christ’s Second Advent, and the beginning of His millennial reign.

When Micah wrote his prophecies the Assyrians had already driven into the northern Kingdom of Israel, and all that remained of Israel proper was its southern Kingdom of Judah. So what were the borders of the land of Assyria when Micah wrote the fifth chapter of his book

? The borders of the Assyrian territory stretched northward from roughly where Ramallah is located in the West Bank to the present day southern border of Turkey, and eastward to the Mediterranean Sea to establish its western limits, then westward across the Euphrates River to the Tigris River north of modern Baghdad in Iraq.

Technically, I suppose one might be able to say this future “Assyrian” might come out of southern Turkey, northern Iraq, or Lebanon, but since modern day Syria occupies some 85% of the area covered by the Assyrian empire at the time of Micah’s writings, I am persuaded the Assyrian antichrist will come out of Syria. The possible argument that Micah 5:5 was fulfilled during the old Assyrian invasion of Micah’s day, is thwarted by the context pattern of the four verses before it all still being unfulfilled at the time they were written, and then being linked contextually to verse 5 by “this man,” and “the peace.” Additionally, this argument is smashed by the verse that follows it.

Micah 5:6 – And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.

From the time of Micah’s writings to the present day, Israel has never “wasted the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof.” I will exposit specifically on both these locations in Prophecy Update Number 67, Lord willing.

The “Assyrian” of Micah 5:5 is not a European, an American, a Russian, an Eskimo, an Aborigine, an Ethiopian, or a platypus. He is an Assyrian, who becomes chief prince of the land where the descendants of Meshech and Tubal were dwelling when Ezekiel wrote his prophecies.

I will elaborate on this in future updates, Lord willing. The expression involving “seven shepherds and eight principal men” is most assuredly an oft used Hebrew idiom. It was the Hebrew manner of expressing “more than enough.” Seven is the Hebrew word for “complete,” implying “enough,” and when “eight” is added to it, the expression means “more than enough.” When the Assyrian comes into Israel, and treads within its borders north of Beersheba for 1260 days, then Jesus will return to restore peace for 1000 years on this planet. Christ’s Second Advent is accompanied by some 5/6 of the Assyrian’s armies being destroyed by the brightness of His coming. His destruction of the Assyrian and his false prophet will make whatever force Israel is able to muster up in the Negev for the battle of Armageddon “more than enough.”

When the Assyrian sets on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, as the willful King of the North preparing to launch his final attack on Israel at the battle of Armageddon, he will be beyond all help by men and Satan.

I Thessalonians 5:3,4 – For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. [4] But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

Ezekiel 38:14-16 – Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord God; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it? [15] And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army: [16] And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.

It’s that time of the year again: Somewhere in the world a Muslim radicalized in Britain will try to blow up innocent men, women and children in a suicide mission.

That appears to have been the case of Taimur Abdulwahab al-Abdaly.

Authorities believe the Iraqi-born Swede gained his extremist views while at university in Luton, England, before he headed to Stockholm and detonated the bombs that killed himself and injured two Christmas shoppers last Saturday.

On Dec. 22, 2001, a British man named Richard Reid tried to bring down a commercial flight from Paris to Miami with bombs placed in his shoes.

Last year, Omar Farouk Abdulmutallab, formerly of University College London, tried to blow up a pl ane over Detroit with

an explosive device concealed in his underpants.

It’s a story that is becoming familiar: Ordinary young man goes to Britain, most likely to study, and comes out an Islamic extremist.

The German Interior Ministry ordered simultaneous raids in the three states of Bremen, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia on Tuesday against what it called Salafist networks suspected of seeking the imposition of an Islamic state.

The raids were directed at two groups: Invitation to Paradise and the Islamic Culture Center of Bremen.

A ministry statement said: “For a well-fortified democracy, it is necessary and demanded, without waiting for the jihad to occur in the form of armed struggle, to take action against anti-constitutional organizations.”

Germany has become increasingly vigilant in recent months about potential threats amid deepening concerns that a small number of German citizens may be under the influence of terrorist groups determined to stage new attacks, either in Germany or elsewhere in Europe.

Afghan Report Sees July Troop Pullouts Despite Perils

WASHINGTON— A review of President Obama’s strategy for the war in Afghanistan concludes that American forces can begin withdrawing on schedule in July, despite finding uneven signs of progress in the year since the president announced the deployment of an additional 30,000 troops, according to a summary made public Thursday.

But just how many soldiers will actually come home next July remains an open question; military officials have indicated that they want only a limited number, and even White House officials take pains to say that the withdrawal will be “conditions-based.”

By 2014, the overview said, the Afghanistan army will be expected to assume the lead all across the country, and the bulk of American troops will have come home.

Just as it did not single out the Pakistani government for criticism, the overview does not overtly criticize the government of President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan, reflecting the administration’s decision earlier this year that its previous tactic of overt public pressure on Mr. Karzai had appeared to backfire.

Now, even though administration officials privately say that corruption in the Afghan government has continued to flourish,

the overview of the report appears to skirt the issue.

“Emphasis must continue to be placed on the development of Afghan-led security and governance within areas that have been a focus of military operations,” the summary said.

In the year since Mr.

Obama announced the troop increase, he has lost four members of his Afghanistan and Pakistan team: General Stanley McChrystal, the American commander in Afghanistan who was fired in June because of remarks he made to Rolling Stone magazine; Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff, who left to run for mayor of Chicago; General James Jones, the National Security Advisor, who left his post in November, and Richard Holbrooke, Mr.

Obama’s special representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan, who died Monday after suffering a rupture in his aorta.

The Swedish investigation into the country’s first suicide bombing Saturday, Dec. 11, quickly found that the bomb car which exploded during a shopping rush in the heart of Stockholm was part of a well-planned, sophisticated terror operation, prepared several months in advance to inflict a large number of casualties. The Swedish media reported that Iraqi-born Taimour al-Abdaly was loaded down with three sets of bombs, one of which was a dozen miniature pipe bombs strung together as a belt.

Still, the suicide bomber was the only fatality.

Two others were slightly injured.

Al-Abdaly’s operation was therefore a near-failure, recalling Faisal Shahzad’s failed bombing attack in Times Square, New York of May 1, although its planners, al Qaeda, are reported by DEBKAfile’s terror experts to have learned from that miss.

The Islamist terror group has turned to multilateralism in the planning, setting up and execution of operations methods to baffle national counter-terror intelligence agencies in the West, our Islamist terror experts report.

The Stockholm strike was accordingly broken down into segments, each taking place in a different country – Pakistan, Iraq, Sweden, Jordan and the UK. American and European cities may find themselves confronted in future with more attacks on those lines.

Al Qaeda’s hand in the latest attack surfaced quite soon.

Monday and Tuesday, Dec.

13 and 14, Al Qaeda-linked Internet sites showered praise on the Iraqi-born Taimour al-Abdaly as a brave martyr who obeyed orders from Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, commander of Al Qaeda in Iraq, who had sworn to avenge the cartoons lampooning the Prophet Muhammad cartoons drawn by the Swedish artist Lars Vilks. Al-Abdaly is reported to have visited Jordan last month to secretly meet his Iraqi handlers.

Iraq has thus joined Pakistan and Yemen as the source of al Qaeda attacks in the West.

Found on the body of Al-Abdaly was a note saying: “Europe, here we come.”
The Swedish Prosecutor for Terrorist Cases Tomas Lindstrand reported Monday, Dec. 13, that the terrorist had been carrying not one but three sets of bombs – the pipe-bomb belt, a backpack containing a second bomb and a hand-held device that looked like a pressure cooker. Abdaly’s final destination was not known, whether the city center which was packed with pre-Christmas shoppers or the Stockholm subway. In either case, hundreds of Swedes had a lucky save.

In the northern English town of Luton, meanwhile, police carried out searches at the home where Al-Abdaly had lived for ten years with his wife and three children and his college, Bedfordshire University. His wife denied knowing about his illicit activities or noticing any special preparations for

his suicide attack.

Our counter-terror sources add that, like Faisal Shahzad in New York, the Stockholm planners parked a vehicle carrying gas canisters rigged with explosives for remote detonation in the most crowded part of the city.

But unlike the New York operation, from which Shahzad escaped after he failed, Al-Abdaly’s mission did not rely on a single incident. He was a walking bomb arsenal with devices for following up the initial car blast. After detonating the rigged car, he was to have strewn the small but powerful pipe bombs and the two larger devices with which he was loaded around key points in the city. Using a cell phone he was to have triggered them all for a coordinated, chain of blasts across central Stockholm.

Al Qaeda would have achieved widespread death and devastation with a single suicide bomber.

But the plan did not work out.

The car bomb exploded only partially, giving the alarm, and Al-Abdaly, instead of carrying on, killed himself by detonating one

of the pipe bombs in his belt.

Al Qaeda’s Stockholm fiasco is the last in a series which all demonstrated a fault in the explosive mechanisms designed by its bomb-makers.

They all ignite prematurely causing small fires and smoke but failing to detonate the explosives – fortunately for their intended victims.

This is what happened on Dec.

21, 2001 to Shoe Bomber Richard Reid, who failed to blow up an American passenger plane, the Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab exactly eight years later, and again in the attempt to plant exploding ink cartridges on air freighters three months ago.

Al Abdaly, it turns out, had been the subject of at least one year’s planning for his operation. He was supported by at least three teams of helpers working together in Sweden and Britain. The first was responsible for surveillance, scouting targets in Stockholm and transport to the scene. The second, also in Sweden, prepared the assorted explosive devices. The third instructed Al Abdaly in the use of explosives. The Swedish police allege that he had been “radicalized” in Britain.

Our counter-terror exports note that this was the first time multilateral methods had been superimposed on home-grown terror. It is bound to make the solving of this form of Islamist terror that much harder.

In an especially colorful analogy, Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin compared Tuesday Israel’s current-day leadership to dogs being led by their masters.

Rivlin told his audience about his own beloved dog, Stephan, charging that when leaders reach decision-making junctions these days they look back to see what the people want instead of leading the way themselves.

The longtime Likud official, who in recent months clashed with Prime Minister and fellow party member Benjamin Netanyahu several times, made the analogy in Jerusalem during the annual conference of municipal deputy heads.

“I had several dogs during my life. The most beloved was Stephan. It would always walk ahead of me, run ahead of me with his tail up…until he would reach a junction where one path led left and the other right.

When he would reach that junction, he wouldn’t know where I want to go,” Rivlin said. ” It would then start to play games, yawning as if it was tired, waiting to see where

I wish to go.

Once he did, he would immediately overtake me and again raise its tail and head, as if he’s leading me

“Today, the leaders look back at the people in order to see what the people want,” Rivlin then added. “How do they do this

? It’s very simple.

If public opinion on that day wants peace, we say peace. If public opinion wants us to get tough with the Arabs, we’re tough with the Arabs that day.

If they want us to be democratic, we’re democratic. If they want us to be communist or Bolshevik, we do that too.”

Rivlin completed his fable by highlighting the bottom line, charging that at this time it doesn’t matter what the leaders want for the people.

Leaders mostly care about what the people want, so they can get their votes, he concluded.
