THE ANTICHRIST WILL LEAD THE 8TH ISLAMIC BEAST WHO CAME OUT OF THE 7TH ISLAMIC BEAST. HE IS DEPICTED AS THE BEAST HIMSELF.

Revelation 19:19,20 – And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. [20] And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Daniel 10:12,13 – Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and

to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. [13] But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.

[20] Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee

? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.

Ephesians 6:12 – For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Revelation 13:1,2 – And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. [2] And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, AND HIS SEAT, and great authority.

Revelation 16:10-16 – And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon THE SEAT of the beast and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, [11] And blasphemed the God of heaven because

of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

[12] And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. [13] And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet.[14]For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

Daniel 12:1 – And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

Daniel 2:32-34,42-45 – This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, [33] His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. [34] Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces [42] And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.

[43]And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. [44] And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

[45] Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

Daniel 2:42 – And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.

II Thessalonians 2:3 – Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

The last evil kingdom of antichrist on this earth was to initially be comprised of 10 nations with 10 kings led by the man of sin himself.

I have always believed it would rise out of the southern half of the Old Roman Empire but would be made up of 10 Arab nations, because the great seventh Empire that formed in the southern part of the Roman Empire, after the fall of it, was the first great Islamic Empire, which was the Seventh Head.

I believe the elements for the Eight Head formation are in place today, and I suspect the most likely Islamic nations of which it will be comprised are Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. Some of these nations are strong like iron, and some are as soft and pliable as clay.

I do not question that in the final battle of Armageddon the descendants of Ham, Shem, and Japheth will be combatants against the nation of Israel. But I have always contended, along with the Bible expositors of the 18th and 19th centuries, that the antichrist’s initial attack would be led by Arab descendants of Abraham. They are the mingled seed of his oldest son Ishmael with the seed of the six sons he sired by Keturah, as well as some of the other offspring of his own father Terah. The empire of the antichrist will be

an Islamic empire that eventually takes into it other old world nations. And, in the final great battle of Armageddon, all those nations that made up the world as it was known in A.D. 95 will come against Israel, such that Japheth, Ham, and Shem’s descendants will also be involved.

Daniel 2:41-43 – And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.

[42] And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. [43] And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.

The 10 toes will consist primarily of Terah�

��s descendants. Abraham came out of Terah. Out of Abraham came the leaders of the three great monotheistic faiths associated with Moses, Jesus, and Mohammad. And they have always been in conflict. (See Archive Update 78 Diagram)

The inspired word in Daniel 2:43, from which the word “mingled” comes, is ARAB, which means “to interlace or mix.” The “seed of men” refers to non-descendants of the man Abraham, from which both Jews and Arabs descended. “They” refers to the 10 toes of Daniel’s statue in Daniel 2:42, which have 10 kings over them. Isaac, the father of Israel, had seven half brothers – Ishmael from Hagar and the six sons of Keturah. It was from these seven half brothers that the Arab world has been primarily created. The descendants of Israel have been more likely to marry within the blood line of the man Israel than have the Arabs to marry within their separate bloodlines of Hagar and Keturah, and the Arabs have also intermingled with non-descendants of Abraham more than have the Jews.

Daniel 2:43 – And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.

Just as iron and clay do not hold together very long, the 10 Arab nations will only hold together long enough to fulfill God’s end time tribulation period prophecies. The saved will be caught up on the sounding of the seventh trump to be judged in heaven, and the kingdom of God will all be united in heaven, waiting to return to earth with Christ at his Second Advent.

Revelation 11:15 – And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and

ever.

Daniel 2:44 – And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

The God of heaven will call all the saved of all the ages together in heaven during the “days of these kings,” and will initially “set up” his kingdom, from whence he will return to earth with it as its head, after the saved have been judged in heaven. Christ’s coming kingdom will “break in pieces and consume all the kingdoms” of the present world, and his kingdom alone will rule.

Revelation 11:15-18 – And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. [16] And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, [17] Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. [18] And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

Christ, the stone, came from the mountain representing God, without any human instrumentation, but by God’s Spirit forming his body in a virgin’s womb. Christ will return to destroy those morally destroying the earth. All of the evil that came out of the Babylonian, Medo- Persian, Macedonian, Roman, and Islamic Empires will be laid waste by his Second Advent.

Daniel 2:45 – Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

Clashes along the northern border since 2006.

Tuesday’s exchanges of fire between Israeli and Lebanese forces serve as a reminder of the volatile situation on the northern border.

• In August 2006, war broke out between Hizbullah and Israel after two IDF soldiers were kidnapped. UN Resolution 1701, which brought an end to the war, dem

anded a complete cessation of hostilities. Since then, however, there have been several clashes between the two countries.

• In February 2007, a gunfire exchange took place between the IDF and the Lebanese Armed Forces. The LAF opened fire without provocation on Israeli soldiers operating inside Israel to which it responded by firing two tank shells over the border.

There were no injuries on either side.

• In June 2007, a Islamic terror group called “Jihadi Badr Brigades” fired two rockets from Lebanon into northern Israel, also causing no casualties.

• After a year of relative calm, attacks resumed in January 2009 when three Katyusha rockets were fired from southern Lebanon, wounding two people and causing severe damage. Israel responded by firing five shells into Lebanese territory. In the same week, more rockets were fired by Hizbullah into the town of Kiryat Shmona, causing no injuries.

• In February 2009, two rockets were fired from the Lebanese coastal town of Naqoura into northern Israel, causing one injury. Israel responded by firing some six artillery shells at the launch area, causing no injuries.

• In September 2009, two rockets fired from Lebanon struck Nahariya and Kibbutz Gesher Hazir, sparking panic and forcing schools to be evacuated. In response, the IDF fired twelve artillery shells at

the area from which the rockets were launched.

• A month later, another Katyusha rocket was fired from the Lebanese town of Hula into northern Israel, causing a fire near Kiryat Shmona. Israel responded with artillery fire causing no injury or damage.

Netanyahu, Barak issue strong reactions to events

The IDF released an aerial photograph Tuesday night, showing that the IDF soldiers involved in deadly clashes with Lebanese forces on Tuesday were standing in Israeli territory when they were fired upon, and did not cross the Lebanese border. This inform ation w

as also reportedly confirmed by a UNIFIL representative.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak responded Tuesday to news of the fatal northern border clashes in which an IDF soldier and 4 Lebanese were killed.

“I hold the Lebanese government directly responsible for this provocation,” Netanyahu said.

He added that Israel would continue to respond with force to any further attempts to violate the ceasefire and disturb the lives of residents of the north and the IDF troops who protect them.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak issued a warning to the Lebanese government, saying that Israel would not tolerate any attacks on citizens or soldiers on its “sovereign territory”, and called on the international community to condemn the “criminal acts of the Lebanese army.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman instructed Israel’s UN representative to submit a complaint UN secretary general and security council, citing a violation of UN Resolution 1701. The complaint was made on the basis that Lebanese forces had opened fire despite the fact that the IDF had given prior warning to UNIFIL of their intention to cross the fence in order to cut down a tree, still within Israeli territory, since the fence does not always exactly parallel the border.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday afternoon, GOC Northern Command Maj.

Gen. Gadi Eizenkot called the incident a “deliberate ambush.”

Reactions to the day’s events also emerged from Lebanese and Syrian leaders, with Syrian President Bashar Assad saying that Syria would stand behind Lebanon and provide any necessary support.

‘Lebanon will respond to every agression’

AFP reported Lebanon’s Supreme Defense Council Secretary General Saeed Eid as saying: “Following consultations, the council ordered the country to respond to every aggression against our land, our military, or our civilians with all the means at our disposal.”

According to Reuters, a US State Department spokesperson said on Tuesday that the United States was in touch with both Israeli and Lebanese governments, and is “extremely concerned” about violence on the border, urging both sides to exercise “maximum restraint.”

Earlier in the day, Kiryat Shmona Mayor Nissim Malcha told Channel 10 that there is no need for northern residents to enter bomb shelters.

“I have alerted all security forces to be ready for any situation,” he said. “I hope that this is an isolated incident.”

Also speaking after the incident, Northern District Commander Major General Shlomo Koron confirmed that no Katushya rockets fell in the area.

Upper Galilee Regional Council Head Aharon Valenzia called on the large number of people enjoying vacations and day trips in the north to continue what they are doing without fear.

Valenzia said that because of the exchange of fire on the northern border his office is in contact with IDF officials in order to provide a response to any possible scenario.

Revelation 17:11 – And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

The Sea is the Mediterranean, on which the great Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Grecian, Roman, and Islamic ships of the past have sailed.

The beast is a combination of eight kingdoms of man associated with this sea. All of the kingdoms have or will affect the people of Israel. The first seven have already affected Israel since the time God began to raise them as his people in Egypt.

The seven heads represent the seven evil kingdoms of man under which Israel has been affected since God delivered her from Egyptian bondage.

The seven kingdoms in chronological order are: the Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Grecian, Roman, and Islamic Kingdoms.

Revelation 17:11 – And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

The seventh kingdom was the first great Islamic Umayyad Empire (Caliphate) that stretched from Spain across Northern Africa and the Middle East to India.

It was the seventh empire which died but will be resurrected by the Islamic Antichrist to be the eighth, having the same type of religion as the seventh. The Koran written by Muhammad is the spirit of Islam and the spirit of Antichrist.

Islam believes that Jesus was the son of the Virgin Mary, but didn’t die on the cross.

Islam believes he ascended alive into heaven and will return to the earth after the Islamic Messiah.

Islam does not believe he is the Son of God, which is

the essence of the spirit of Antichrist.

I John 5:9-12 – If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. [10] He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. [11] And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. [12] He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

The ten horns are ten Islamic kings that will join with the Antichrist in the final Islamic Kingdom to attack Israel and drive her into the Negev for some three and one-half years. Their ten crowns represent their power which will be surrendered to the Antichrist.

7 Greek letters in (CH)(R)(I)(S)(T)(O)(S), make one for each head, and Antichrist claims to be God, which is the ultimate blasphemy.

REVELATION 13:2 – And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

First, John works backward to the kingdom from which Daniel was writing while in captivity, the Kingdom of Babylonia. John is writing during the time of the sixth head, the Roman Kingdom, the strange fourth beast of Daniel 7 with iron teeth and brass feet, so he does not mention it, but goes back to the Grecian Kingdom (leopard) crushed by the brass feet of the Iron Roman Kingdom Beast, then proceeds back to the Persian Kingdom (bear) the Grecian Kingdom overran, and finally gets back to the time of Daniel’s writing in the Babylonian Kingdom (lion).

The dragon (Satan) also has seven heads, ten horns, and ten crowns, which represent the same things as the beast of Revelation 13:1.

Revelation 12:3 – And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

The Devil’s kingdom has been located in the great Tigris-Euphrates River Valley since Adam’s fall in the Garden of Eden.

Genesis 10:6-11 – And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan.

[7] And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtechah: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan. [8] And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.

Genesis 11:1-4,8 – And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. [2] And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

[3] And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly.

And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.

[4] And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

[8] So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

Obama: US combat mission in Iraq to end on schedule

US President: America’s combat mission in Iraq would end by August 31, 2010.

The United States will end its combat mission in Iraq as scheduled on August 31 despite the recent flare-up in violence, President Barack Obama said in a speech prepared for delivery Monday.

“Shortly after taking office,

I announced our new strategy for Iraq and for a transition to full Iraqi responsibility,” Obama will tell a national convention of Disabled American Veterans in Atlanta, Georgia, according to excerpts of his speech released by the White House.

“And I made it clear that by August 31, 2010 America’s combat mission in Iraq would end,” the president continued. “And that is exactly what we are doing, as promised, on schedule.”

As president, Obama inherited a security agreement with Baghdad that calls for all US forces to pull out by the end of 2011.

He has ordered the force to draw down to 50,000 by September 1.

There are about 65,000 US soldiers currently stationed in Iraq.

The pullout confirmation comes amid an increase of violence in Iraq, with the Baghdad government releasing figures Saturday that said 535 people died in July, including 396 civilians, 89 policemen and 50 soldiers.

That figure was the highest for a single month since May 2008 when 563 people were killed in violence.

But Major General Stephen Lanza, a spokesman for US forces in Iraq, said the Iraqi government figures did not “reflect the security situation” while data provided to media by unofficial sources were “grossly overstated.”

Obama said that even as militants try to derail the country’s progress, “violence in Iraq continues to be near the lowest it’s been in years.”

He pointed out that in coming months, the United States will maintain a transitional force in Iraq and remove all of its troops from the country by the end of 2011.

According to the president, US forces will focus during this transitional period on supporting and training Iraqi forces, counter-terrorism missions and protecting US civilian and military initiatives.

“But make no mistake, our commitment in Iraq is changing — from a military effort led by our troops to a civilian effort led by our diplomats,” the president stressed.

“And as we mark the end of America’s combat mission in Iraq, a grateful America must pay tribute to all who served there.”

August 31 will also mark the end of Operation Iraqi Freedom launched by former president Geroge W. Bush with the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, according to White House officials.

The transitional mission will be called Operation New Dawn.

Obama announced the date for the end of US combat missions in Iraq at a speech in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, in February 2009, a little over a month after moving into the White House.

There were 144,000 US troops in Iraq when he took office.

Along with the troops, Washington is reducing its military equipment deployed in the country.

By the end of August, US forces in Iraq will reduce the total number of equipment from 3.4 million pieces in January 2009 to a total of 1.2 million pieces, which are required to support the remaining troops, according to the White House.

The equipment is being moved to Afghanistan, US military stockpiles and to Iraqi security forces.

By the end of the month, US forces are also scheduled to reduce from 121 to to 94 the number of bases they occupy in Iraq, White House officials said.

By comparison, in June 2009, US troops occupied 357 Iraqi bases.

Taliban Statement Says Kabul Conference Helped the ‘Implementation of the U.S.’s Satanic Programs’ in Afghanistan, Notes: ‘The Useless Kabul Conference Showed that the U.S. has Lost the Initiative to Find a Solution to the Afghanistan Issue’

On July 20, a major international conference on Afghanistan, which was attended by foreign ministers and diplomats from over 70 countries, endorsed Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s initiative with regard to the Taliban in Afghanistan.

A communiqué issued at the end of the conference said: “Participants welcomed and endorsed in principle the Afghan government’s peace and reintegration program.”[1]

According to a report on the website of the Pakistani daily The News, the communiqué noted that the peace plan is directed at those militants “who renounce violence, have no links to international terrorist organizations, respect the constitution, and are willing to join in building a peaceful Afghanistan.”[2]

Addressing the conference, President Karzai said that Afghan security forces will take over full responsibility

for maintaining security in Afghanistan by 2014. According to a report on the Afghan website tolonews.com, he said, “I remain determined that our Afghan national security forces will be responsible for all military and law enforcement operations throughout our country by 2014.”[3]

On July 21, the Taliban said that the Kabul Conference does not portend any kind of benefit, adding that the decisions which were taken in the conference will only prolong the war in Afghanistan.[4] According to a report in the Dari-language newspaper Roznama Cheragh, the Taliban said the conference has helped in the “implementation of the U.S.’s satanic programs in Afghanistan.”[5]

On July 21, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (the Taliban’s shadow government) also issued a statement, urging the international community not to blindly endorse the U.S.’s “useless and blind plans” in Afghanistan. Excerpts of the statement were published by the Peshawar-based newspaper The Frontier Post.[6] Accusing the Karzai government of being a “slave” to the U.S. interests in Afghanistan, the Taliban statement said that despite its incompetence, the Kabul government has been “imposed on Afghans by the Americans.”

Following are excerpts from the Taliban statement:[7]

“The Conference Shows that the International Community would Leave Afghanistan and Hold the Powerless Kabul Administration Responsible for the Upcoming Destruction”

“The conference was organized by the international community on the pretext to hand over military, administrative, and economic matters to the slave Kabul administration days after the officials of the finance department of the same administration announced that over 40 billion dollars were smuggled through Kabul Airport in three years.

“Similarly, an anti-corruption organization reported that officials of the Karzai administration robbed Afghans of one billion dollar in the past one year…

“Besides the financial embezzlement, the military and security situation of this administration has reached such a level that its head [President Hamid Karzai] could not travel by road in Kabul despite the presence of 150,000 foreign troops. No government writ could be seen in Kabul…

“Despite that 12,000 Afghan and foreign troops were deployed by the Americans for the security of the daylong conference [on Tuesday], mujahideen were able to fire rockets at Kabul airport and proved their military strength…

“The international community admitted that the… military and economic affairs would be handed over to the failed administration…

“The useless Kabul conference showed that the U.S. has lost the initiative to find a solution to the Afghanistan issue, and any effort being made in the name of a solution to the problem has already failed in the past. Anything they are doing on this pretext is proving to be the cause of the prolonging of the problems and involving the foreigners. These are the things that Afghans do not want.

It would intensify the resistance…

“The confused and unidentified target of the conference shows that the international community would leave Afghanistan and hold the powerless Kabul administration responsible for the upcoming destruction and failure…

“By making useless efforts like the Kabul conference, the Americans want to divert the international community’s attention from their defeat in Afghanistan, not to bring an end to the problems of Afghanistan…”

Hamas orders compulsory call-up for new army parallel to Hizballah

Israeli bombers struck Palestinian targets in Gaza city, Deir el Balach in the east and Rafah in the south Friday night, July 30 – in the wake of attacks by a Palestinian Iranian-made Grad missile which damaged a high-rise apartment building in Ashkelon, leaving 17 people in shock, and missile-mortar fire on the Eshkol farm district.

Hamas central Gaza commander Issa Batran who was also in charge of Qassam missile manufacturing was killed, 8 gunmen were injured in the Israeli air bombardment of the “Nasser Compound” command center at Tel Al-Hawa where a training school for a new class of Hamas officers has been set up.

sources report that this was the first Israeli attack on a Hamas military target since the January 2009 Cast Lead operation. It took place after Hamas announced the compulsory call-up of all men aged 18 to 25 for a new Palestinian Popular Army for stepping up its confrontation with Israel’s armed forces, with the help of the new officers’ training facility.

Hamas launched the military-standard Grad missile (as distinct from the homemade Qassams) Friday to show off its new strength and inform Israel that henceforth it faces an enhanced Palestinian challenge from Gaza.

According to our intelligence sources, the new Hamas militia is structured on the same lines as the Lebanese Hizballah. Both are armed and sponsored by Iran and regularly manipulated in pursuit of Tehran’s regional objectives.

For the officers training center Israel demolished Friday, Iran shelled out $250 million.

Creating a well-armed Palestinian militia in the Gaza Strip was Tehran’s first move to counter the impact of the visit Saudi King Abdullah and Syrian President Bashar Assad paid to Beirut Friday. More undoubtedly lie ahead.

Israel knew about the buildup in the Gaza Strip but Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and defense minister Ehud Barak chose to keep it dark so as not to interfere with the prospects of direct peace talks with the Palestinians. This restraint proved unproductive.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas discussed the new Hamas army with Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and intelligence minister Gen.

Omar Suleiman in Cairo, shortly before the Arab League Monitoring Committee convened to determine the future of peace talks with Israel.

The outcome was an equivocal committee decision to leave the option of direct talks to Abbas, so long as

they led to a final accord within a specified time frame.

By this decision, the Arab League left Abbas free to continue to stonewall the US and Israel on peace talks as he has done for the last eighteen months.

The result is that the prospect of direct talks is as remote as ever, whereas the expectation of escalating violence from the Gaza Strip has risen.

In establishing the new Hamas militia, Tehran had a second motive: the need to re-establish itself as the foremost champion of Palestinian extremists after being outshined by its ally, Turkey. Prime Minister Tayyep Erdogan won kudos as the only Muslim ruler espousing Hamas when he sent the “aid” flotilla for breaking the blockade on the Gaza Strip, which Israel intercepted on May 29.

Early Saturday, July 31, the Israeli defense minister met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in New York to discuss the rising threat from Gaza. Ban responded by calling on Israel to remove all further restrictions on the Hamas-ruled territory.
