EXPOSITION OF DAVID’S PSALM 110 – PART 2

PSALM 110:2 – The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion:

rule thou in the midst of th

ine enemies.

At his Second Advent Christ will return with all the saved of all the ages to begin his millennial reign from Zion, the earthly Jerusalem. He will come as the Lion of Judah to rule with a rod of iron over all the nations of the earth, sitting in Jerusalem in the midst of all his enemies that survived the tribulation period.

Joel 3:16,17 – The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel. [17] So shall ye know that I am the Lord your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.

Jesus Christ was begotten as God’s Son to begin his First Advent to save the souls of all who would believe in him.

It was decreed by God before the foundation of the world that the Seed would save those who trusted in the promise of God in him as their redeemer and king.

Psalm 2:6,7 – Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. [7] I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

He will return to the earth at his Second Advent to sit on the holy hill of Jerusalem, Mount Zion, from whence his power will roar out, and his voice, his word, will be issuing the commandments for all mankind to obey, and those who do not will be broken with a rod of iron. His descent to the earth will be the most horrendous event that mankind has ever experienced, as witnessed in the following Scriptures.

Psalm 2:8,9 – Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. [9] Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

Luke 21:26-28 – Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

[27] And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. [28] And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

The faithful in his churches will be the rods of iron he uses in his name to rule with him out of Jerusalem. The “he that overcometh” consists of those church members who have remained faithful to the end of their lifespan on the earth.

Revelation 2:25-29 – But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.

[26] And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: [27] And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.

[28] And I will give him the morning star.

[29] He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

He is the bright and morning star, who will give himself to the one overcoming in an eternal relationship of close fellowship.

Revelation 22:16,17 – I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

[17] And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come.

And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

The “overcomer” of Revelation is made up of church members that “made themselves ready” by applying the same blood to their lives, which had previously saved and eternally sealed their souls.

How did they apply his blood to their lives? By fighting the flesh while living submissive lives to God until their physical death!

Galatians 2:20 – I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Revelation 19:7-9 – Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. [8] And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

[9] And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

The “overcomer” will not only go to heaven, like any other believer, he will inherit the full inheritance of all things and have a closer personal relationship with the Lord in heaven.

Revelation 21:7 – He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

The closer relationship the believer has with Christ in this present life, the closer the relationship he will have with him in his future heavenly life. Such a relationship is characterized by the spiritual growth in this life as described in I Peter 2:2-5.

I Peter 2:2-5 – As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby: [3] If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

[4] To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, [5] Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

PSALM 110:3 – Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.

Those who serve him today in bodies of sinful flesh, are constantly hampered by the flesh, but their bodies will have been changed at the rapture, and they will have received glorified bodies in which they mysteriously found themselves, like a dew appears seemingly out of nowhere on a calm, clear night.

They will be perfectly willing in his day of millennial power to serve him, for they will not be hampered by sinful flesh.

I Corinthians 15:50-52 – Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. [51] Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, [52] In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

This same imagery of dew suddenly appearing from the earth, as if it was born from the womb of the earth, that appears in PSALM 110:3, is also pictured in the rapture portrayed in Isaiah 26:19.

Isaiah 26:19-21 – Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

[20] Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. [21] For, behold, the Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

Ezekiel 39:17-21 – And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord God; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood. [18] Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan. [19] And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you. [20] Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord God. [21] And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.

THE BODIES OF THE BEAST, FALSE PROPHET, AND THEIR ARMY UPON WHICH THE CARNIVORUS FOWLS ARE FEASTING FOLLOWED BY THE DEVIL AND HIS KINGDOM OF DEMONS BEING KEPT PRISONERS IN THE BOTTOMLESS PIT FOR A THOUSAND YEARS.

Ephesians 6:12 – For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Isaiah 27:1 – In that day the Lord with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.

Isaiah 24:21-22 – And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. [22] And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.

Revelation 19:20 to 20:4 – And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. [20] And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. WILL THE TEMPLE BE REBUILT IN JERUSALEM?

I long ago lost count of the number of men and women who have reminded me that the temple MUST be rebuilt before Jesus returns. A majority of believers are certain that it must be rebuilt because antichrist must set in it “showing himself that he is God.”

As a young man I believed that it would be rebuilt before Jesus returned.

But as I studied the Greek language in Seminary, I began to say it would “probably” be rebuilt. I now do not believe it will be rebuilt until the Millennial reign of Jesus Christ. Why?

Much of what follows is quoted primarily from the “New Testament Greek-English Dictionary of the Complete Bible Library,” Volumes 13 and 14.

In the New Testament the word “hieron,” translated as “temple,” is found ONLY in the Gospels, in Acts, and in I Corinthians 9:13, where Paul’s ONLY use of the word appears as “temple.”

I Corinthians 9:13 – Jerusalem’s Literal Stone Temple

Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple (hieron)? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?

“Hieron” refers to the entire temple including its precincts and the temple hill or, in a limited sense, any portion of the temple, such as the court of the women (Luke 2:37) where Jesus stood before the altar after his triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Mark 11:11), the court of the Gentiles out of which Jesus drove the money changers (John 2:15), or the temple proper where the veil separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies (Matthew 27:52). “Hieron” is ONLY used in a literal sense in the entire New Testament. This is in very sharp contrast to its closely related term “naos,” which is used both literally and figuratively in the New Testament. It is used figuratively at times to refer to the human body or a local church body.

I Corinthians 6:19 – The Human Body – Naos

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are

not your own?

I Corinthians 3:16,17 – The Local Church Body – Naos

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? [17] If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

(All the “ye’s” in this verse are plural, and the “in” of verse 16 may be translated with equal validity as being “among” you, because “you” is plural.)

Now, let’s take a look at the word “naos,” translated as “temple” in the New Testament. “Naos” denotes the “dwelling place of a god.” Consequently, the “naos” was the inner “sanctuary” of a temple where the image of the God was placed, or where he dwelled. It is frequently translated as “temple,” but the association with the word “sanctuary” should not be overlooked.

The following verses contain ALL the uses of the word translated “temple” in the writings of the Apostle Paul.

TEMPLE – HIERON – I CORINTHIANS 9:13

Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?

(This is absolutely referring literally to the great temple of stone in the city of Jerusalem)

TEMPLE – NAOS – I CORINTHIANS 6:19

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

(This is absolutely referring to the body of someone who has experienced the new birth as figuratively being a temple)

TEMPLE – NAOS – I CORINTHIANS 3:16,17

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? [17] If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

TEMPLE – NAOS – II CORINTHIANS 6:16

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

(All the “ye’s” and the “them” and “they” are plural, and the two “in’s” may be translated as “among”)

TEMPLE – NAOS – EPHESIANS 2:21,22

In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: [22] In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

(The “ye” in verse 22 is plural)

It is perfectly obvious in the verses in the two books of Corinthians and Ephesians that Paul was not referring to the literal temple in Jerusalem, and it is also equally obvious he knew the distinction between “hieron” and “naos.” That is why his ONLY other use of the word “naos,” occurring in I Thessalonians 2:4, is so puzzling. I am convinced that if he meant the literal stone temple in Jerusalem, then he would have used the word “hieron.”

TEMPLE – NAOS – II THESSALONIANS 2:4

Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

The precise meaning of “naos” in this verse is uncertain. I believe Paul pictures the antichrist sitting on the temple mount in a sinful body of flesh, with his inner soul and spirit claiming he is God to prove it to himself, and to show the world he is God. This would parallel his use of the word “naos” in I Corinthians 6:19. In any case, I Thessalonians 2:4 falls far short of proving that the temple must be rebuilt before the return of Jesus.

The companion Old Testament Scripture often used to link with I Thessalonians 2:2 to prove the temple must be rebuilt is Daniel 11:45.

Daniel 11:45 – And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.

However, the word translated “palace” is “appeden.” It is never translated as “temple” in the entire Bible. So it means, in the context of this verse, that antichrist returns to Jerusalem just before the battle of Armageddon, and puts up a command post palace pavilion on the temple mount, from which he plans to sit and direct the final battle.

The tents (tabernacles – ohel) are the tents of all the troops from Europe, Eurasia, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa which have poured into Israel in answer to his call, and he will direct their final attack against Israel in the Negev from his “appeden” on the temple mount. I have heard about the rebuilding of this temple for some 54 years. For better or for worst, I do not believe the temple will be rebuilt until Jesus returns.

Rabbi Yona Metzger inaugurates controversial Hurva Synagogue in Jerusalem, urges Muslims to disregard rumors that Israel is eying Temple Mount takeover

Chief Rabbi of Israel Yona Metzger sent a calming message to the Muslim world Monday, amid tensions over the inauguration of the Hurva Synagogue in Jerusalem.

Metzger and Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz both set the mezuzah at the synagogue jambs earlier in the afternoon.

“Pay no attention to malicious slander. All we are doing is resurrecting the ‘Hurva,’ which was destroyed 60 years ago. We have no intention of rebuilding the temple, not this week – unless the Almighty God descends it from the heavens,” said the chief rabbi during

the inauguration ceremony.

“All the rumors that suggest we will later march on Temple Mount are just that – rumors. A media spin by anti-Semites that wish us harm.” Knesset Member Danny Danon (Likud) also attended the ceremony and protested the controversy sparked by the decision to reopen the synagogue.

“Nothing is more in the heart of the Israeli consensus as building a synagogue in the Jewish Quarter,” he said, “But anything Jewish immediately sparks controversy. We have to tell our American friends – ‘keep your hands off Jerusalem and afford Jews their right to pray in the Old City.'”

The reconstruction of Hurva Synagogue, he continued, “symbolized the renewed construction in Jerusalem… The Palestinian Authority turns every project in the capital into an international incident, and unfortunately it was able to do that concerning Ramat Shlomo. We cannot walk into that trap.”

THE TWO LORDS OF DAVID – THE FATHER & THE SON

PSALM 110:1 – A Psalm of David – The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

In order to comprehend the prophecies contained in the 110th Psalm of David, one must understand it in the context of the New Testament.

When Jesus ministered to his own people in the Gospels, he was ministering to a people that had accepted the traditions taught apart from the Holy Word of God. The people were looking for a conqueror like David who had, by the end of his long reign, established a material kingdom that reached its peak of material glory in the days of his famous son, King Solomon. New Testament Israel had been taught their coming Messiah would be a direct descendant of David, and that he was coming to defeat all of Israel’s enemies, establishing a material kingdom much greater than the one of David’s time, which would last forever. One of the Lord’s last statements to his captor, Pontius Pilate, shattered the traditional Messiah teaching that Israel had received from the Priests and Scribes.

John 18:36 – Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

He will indeed come as the Lion of Judah at his Second Advent, but he came as the Lamb of God, his only begotten Son, at his First Event, as David prophesied in Psalm 2:7 that Messiah would be God’s only begotten Son. Messiah came as God’s Son in Bethlehem.

Psalm 2:7 – I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

In the same Psalm of David, God pictures him coming at his Second Advent as the Lion of Judah, which was what the Jews were expecting at his First Advent.

Psalm 2:8,9 – Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. [9] Thou shalt break them

with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

Christ has been waiting, as God’s Lamb of the First Advent, for the time when he will return as God’s Lion at his Second Advent, which is referred to in verse one of Psalm 110.

PSALM 110:1 – The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

The same aspect of the separation time between the two Advents is referred to several times in Scripture, as in Hebrews 1:13.

Hebrews 1:1-6,13 – God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, [2] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; [3] Who being the brightness of HIS glory, and the express image of HIS person, and upholding all things by THE WORD of HIS power, when he had BY HIMSELF purged our SINS, SAT DOWN on the right hand of the Majesty on high; [4] Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. [5] For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be

to me a Son? [6] And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. [13] But to which of the angels said he at any times, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool

PSALM 110:1 – A Psalm of David – The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

The Lord Jesus Christ identifies himself as much more than the descendant, the son of David, when he asks the Pharisees two leading questions in Matthew 22:41-43.

Matthew 22:41-46 – While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, [42] Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David. [43] He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, [44] The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? [45] If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? [46] And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

Christ clearly identifies himself as not only the son of David, but as David’s Lord, making himself equal to God. And, in Hebrews 10:12-14, Christ clearly pictures his everlasting priesthood that allows him to intercede for all sins forever.

Hebrews 10:12-14 – But this man, after he had offered ONE sacrifice for SINS FOREVER, sat down on the right hand of God; [13] From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. [14] For by ONE offering he hath perfected FOREVER them that are sanctified.

Daniel identified the Messiah as a man elevated to the throne of God, some 600 years before Jesus was born.

Daniel 7:13,14 – I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. [14] And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

This was the kingdom Messiah came to bring in, but he, along with his kingdom was rejected by Israel.

Matthew 4:17 – From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Matthew 6:33,34 – But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. [34] Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

That kingdom is coming with the King at his Second Advent.

Zechariah 14:9 – And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.

Malachi 4:2,3 – But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. [3] And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the Lord of hosts. [4] Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.

Ezekiel 37:24-26 – And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them. [25] And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children’s children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever.

[26] Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore.

The temple of Ezekiel 40 to 48 will be built at the end of the battle of Armageddon and stand for almost 1000 years. The kingdom will continue in the heaven age but there will be no stone temple in it.

Revelation 3:12,13 – Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. [13] He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Revelation 21:22 – And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.

The pillars of the church age will become the pillars in the house of God in the millennium.

Galatians 2:9 – And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.

If delusion is one of the most dangerous pitfalls of diplomacy, then, paradoxically, recent criticism of Israel by Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is a blessing in disguise.

Condemning a routine announcement of Israeli plans to build a new neighborhood in Jerusalem, Biden fired the first shot. Clinton added that “it was not only an insult to Biden, but an insult to the United States.”

Such fiery attacks on Israel are sharp contrasts to pledges of love and loyalty, rhetoric

meant to anesthetize Israelis against the reality of American policy and intentions.

We should all breathe a sigh of relief, not only that these agents of PLO policies – that Jerusalem is negotiable – have left, but that it’s out in the open.

Prime Minister Netanyahu avoided the first salvo by excusing and apologizing for the “untimely” announcement. Actually, the timing was perfect. It exposed the real purpose of Biden’s visit and President Barack Hussein Obama’s direction.

But Netanyahu cannot avoid Clinton’s pot shots, which struck at the spinal nerve of the relationship between Israel and the US. As she put it, this was not a dispute over policy, but a deliberate attempt to humiliate the United States of America.

It was not the planned official dedication of a square and monument in Ramallah – during Biden’s visit – to a terrorist who had murdered Israelis that offended Ms. Clinton, but plans to build apartments for Jews.

Concessions a display of weakness

Supporters of Israel should rejoice that Biden and Clinton have emerged from Obama’s closet hatred of Israel. Their wild attack, as deadly as it seemed initially, however, did little or no damage. It clears the way for a robust Israeli response, one that will set the course of Israeli policy and the guidelines of future discussions.

PM Netanyahu now has the opportunity to defend Israel’s position, not only on Jerusalem, but on other issues of Israeli sovereignty that have been disputed. This includes the right to decide on what Jewish heritage sites include and the right to preserve those historical and archeological sites, the right of Jews to live in Judea and Samaria, and the right of self-defense.

Unfortunately, however, Netanyahu brought this upon himself when he unilaterally declared a building freeze against Jews.

Had this been c onditi

oned on Arab Palestinian compliance, or compromise, it might have been justified.

Instead, it simply escalated Arab demands and postponed negotiations.

Moreover, unilateral Israeli concessions, especially on vital, core issues, are a display of Israeli weakness. That policy must be reconsidered in light of what has resulted.

AIPAC urges White House to tone down rhetoric, says situation “very worrying.

Israel’s Ambassador to Washington Michael Oren convened Foreign Ministry consuls for them the crisis between Israel and the US is the worst since 1975, Army Radio reported on Monday.

Oren was referring to a crisis that evolved when Israel refused to sign a treaty to withdraw forces from Sinai after the Yom Kippur War.

In an unusual move, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) m ade

a public call on the White House to tone down the rhetoric. The lobby said statements made by senior officials in US President Barack Obama’s administration were “very worrying.”

The crisis erupted late last week when the Interior Ministry approved the building of 1,600 new housing units in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo, while US Vice President Joe Biden was visiting Israel.

The US administration refused to let go of the issue, even after Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu apologized to Biden and Biden said the apology was accepted. AIPAC said the White House should avoid public demands and unilaterally setting a timetable for Israel to follow.

In his briefing to consuls, Oren said the crisis with the US is of “historic” proportions.

The US reportedly wants Israel to announce that it’s cancelling the Ramat Shlomo project, investigate how the project came to be announced when Biden was here, and make gestures towards the Palestinian Authority. The US also reportedly demands that Israel publicly announce that all core issues will be discussed during the peace negotiations.

On Sunday, Anti Defamation League National Director Abe Foxman said the US criticism of Israel was “especially troubling” because Netanyahu had offered clear explanations of the announcement mishap both publicly and privately.

“US Vice President Joe Biden accepted the prime minister’s apology,” Foxman said. “Therefore, to raise the issue again in this way is a gross overreaction to a point of policy difference among friends.

“We cannot remember an instance when such harsh language was directed at a friend and ally of the United States,” the statement continued. “One can only wonder how far the US is prepared to go in distancing itself from Israel in order to placate the Palestinians in the hope they see it is in their interest to return to the negotiating

Exposition of I Corinthians 13 – Part 12

I Corinthians 13:13 – And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

The charity (love) of God is indeed manifested in the salvation of a soul by grace through faith, but the true fullness of the love of God is manifested in the process of conversion to a new way of life found in his churches. It is a love that is manifested in a true conversion of the individual lifestyles and attitudes in its membership.

Ephesians 1:22,23 – And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, [23] Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

SALVATION IS THE SEALING OF A SOUL TO ETERNAL LIFE!

GOD’S LOVE SEED IS PLANTED IN THAT SOUL!

GOD’S LOVE GROWS IN IT BY CONVERSION!

CONVERSION IS A MAJOR CHURCH FUNCTION!

Matthew 28:20 – Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

When Jesus spoke the words that follow in Luke 22:28-34 to the eleven, Judas Iscariot had already departed to betray him. The eleven men had faithfully followed him for more than three years, having been saved, and then baptized by John the Baptist before Jesus called them out and organized them into his first church. They had been saved by faith in the coming Messiah’s arrival long before he appeared to them, and had walked with him in the living hope that he would immediately bring in his kingdom, which John had declared was at hand. So certainly they had faith and hope, but both needed to increase, as does ours from day to day, and they needed to learn to love the way that Jesus loved, as do we all. We are meant to be “converted” to a new way of love that he plants within us at the new birth.

All saved men and women are heaven bound by God’s grace in the new birth from above, but due to the stubbornness of the soul in response to the Spirit alongside it, they are not “converted,” and waste their lives out of a lack of a working fellowship with God. Jesus indicated the eleven all had a need for this “conversion.”

Luke 22:28-34 – Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. [29] And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; [30] That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. [31] And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: [32] But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when THOU ART CONVERTED, strengthen thy brethren. [33] And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, AND TO DEATH. [34] And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.

Matthew 26:34-35 – Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. [35] Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, YET WILL I NOT DENY THEE. LIKEWISE ALSO SAID ALL THE DISCIPLES.

It was not just Peter that made the rash statement – all of the eleven said the same thing. In my 77 years on this planet there has been an astounding change in my way of thinking. Before I was saved I was only capable of thinking carnally, but of course I did not know that, and it was only when Christ came to live in me by grace through faith, that I was even capable of growing in hope and love. I had to begin to learn to love like Jesus loved, and will be learning for the rest of this life. A lot of ministers throw themselves into a great battle against Satan with all the tenacity of their fleshly energy.

I did, and wanted to show Jesus how much

I loved him by my constant soul-winning activities. Some ministers do this for the entire length of their ministry, and tend to judge those who do not. I do not judge them, I applaud them. They are not my servants, they are God’s, and I wish them well. Time has slipped by in my life as a child of God for more than 60 years. I have been, and am, in the process of learning to love, which is a process of the conversion of the soul to a new way of thinking by the word of God. One cannot strengthen his brethren very much until he has been converted to this process. You cannot explain it to someone else until it is happening to you. If your faith in the ability of Christ’s Spirit fails, then your hope in him fails, and there is no foundation on which his love can grow in you. The account of the “conversion” of Peter is an interesting one.

Luke 22:32 – But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

Peter, when he first began to serve Christ, had a great amount of fleshly zeal to please God, which is the basis of most worship not rightly directed. The process that he went through did not occur overnight, but he did go through it, and completed his life serving God in the spirit, that is, in confidence that God simply wanted him to do what he told him to do, and let his Spirit take care of what Peter was incapable of doing. Growing in love of God is growing in the confidence that he loves you and all men, and if you will simply do what he told you, then you don’t have to run around like a dog chasing its own tail to prove to yourself you are pleasing God.

John 6:62,63 – What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before

? [63] It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Peter’s first great shock in his conversion was realizing how really weak he was in the flesh, wherein he had been attempting to serve God, and the degree of vanity that existed in his efforts to please God in that flesh.

Luke 22:60-62 – And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. [61] And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. [62] And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

Peter, like all of us, needed to be converted to loving God by a growing faith and hope in the power of the Spirit of God to accomplish his own purposes according to his own directions, not in our own ingenuity to find a better way to assist God in what his Spirit alone can do.

Peter learned all of his Christian life by a conversion in his way of serving Christ, as we are we all supposed to do. It is a slow process with sudden jolts and different degrees of progress, but it is a conversion process for those willing, during their Christian lives, to admit that further changes are necessary in their way of thinking. And they are acutely aware that any future changes in their way of thinking must be directed by, and in full agreement with, the word of God. Some Christians add their own innovative ideas and programs to his word, and for a while create quite a degree of excitement, and other Christians stop in the middle of the stream and become spiritual dwarfs, as though they have found the plateau of the way God wants them to conduct every aspect of their service to him. The climax of Peter’s last personal experience with the risen Jesus bears witness to what God told Peter and all ministers of his word to do with their lives.

John 21:14,15 – This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead. [15] So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest (agapas) thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love (philo) thee. He saith unto him, Feed (bosko) my lambs.

“Agapas” was a higher form of love than “philo.” And to Peter’s credit, he did not lie to the Lord. He knew that he had failed miserably in the flesh to perform the kind of love “agapas” inferred. The “these” were all the things around him, his friends around him, his fishing profession, the 153 fish that had been reeled in after they had struggled all night in the flesh and caught nothing, yet drew in all 153 with one cast when they followed his instruction – He was simply asking him, do you love me more than the things of the flesh? He did not tell Peter, you cannot serve me until you do love me in the form of “agapas”, he simply told him, “Feed my lambs.” The word that is translated “feed” is “bosko,” which simply means “to feed, or to pasture.” If I only “philo” Jesus, I am still supposed to feed his lambs.

John 21:16 – He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest (agapas) thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love (philo) thee. He saith unto him, Feed (poimaino) my sheep.

The word translated “feed” is not “bosko,” but rather “poimaino,” which means to exercise the full office of a shepherd, to not only feed, but to lead, to direct, to fold. If I only “philo” Jesus, I am still supposed to shepherd his flock.

John 21:17 – He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest (philo) thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest (philo) me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love (philo) thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed (bosko) my sheep.

In this third question Jesus puts to Peter, for the first time Jesus asks him if he has “philo” love for him, rather than “agapas.” I do not “agapas” Jesus as he expresses “agapas” toward me, but if I just “philo” him, I am still supposed to feed and shepherd the flock he gives me, both young and old.

The early years of my ministry were years of sincerely trying to please God, to do what he wanted me to do, but I was like a baby bear wearing boxing gloves and attempting to get honey out of a bee hive in an old tree trunk. The young bear who carefully observes how his older mom gets the honey out, without being stung too severely, is very wise. I tried to do what seemed right to me in order to please God, but did not study to observe the way that Jesus practiced evangelism. I practiced it like a young bear attacking a bee hive to get the honey, using what was lying around me to fight off the bees.

I Corinthians 13:11 – When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

It is a lot easier to get honey in showing the goodness of God’s love in Christ, than with a frontal assault of your own great faith and hope in him. It is the goodness of his love that leads men and women to repentance

Romans 2:4 – Or despisest thou the riches of his GOODNESS and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that THE GOODNESS of God leadeth thee to repentance

Acts 20:21 – Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Peter learned to feed the flock as an elder who saw his mission as feeding the flock to lead them to the ultimate every church member is to reach forward to obtain, the love of God, whose goodness leads men to repentance.

II Peter 3:9 – The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

I Peter 5:1,2 –The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: [2] Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

Peter changed in his attitude and love toward God and man during his lifetime. He stopped trying to obtain great results in the flesh to demonstrate his faithfulness and devotion to the rest of the brethren. He learned to shepherd and feed the local flocks as an elder, and he simply stretched forth his hands to God to receive the physical strength to teach spiritual things. I wonder where he got that idea! As far as historical records of his physical departure from this life, it is difficult to find absolute hard core proof of the manner in which Peter did die, but I do accept the general teaching that he was martyred, and may well have been crucified upside down on a cross in Rome when he had the sentence of death passed on him for his witness of Christ. I believe this because Peter had been dead for some time when John wrote his epistle, and John, knowing how he had actually died, indicated it was a martyr’s death in John 21:18,19 to which Jesus referred. I am inclined to believe that Christ girded Peter with his strength and carried him to a martyr’s death on a cross in Rome, but there is an alternate interpretation of these verses.

John 21:18,19 – Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. [19] This spake he, SIGNIFYING by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

This was one of the last things Jesus said to Peter in this discourse – FOLLOW ME. If he was crucified on a cross, what an appropriate way to fulfill what Christ said to him – He picked up his cross and followed him.

Matthew 10:38 – And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

Jesus simply told him to follow him, to follow his ways, to follow his teachings. In my early ministry I was often more concerned about what “the brethren” were doing, than in what I was doing.

I simply needed to keep my eyes on Jesus and follow him and his ways and his great teachings. Peter had to learn that lesson and I am still learning it. The expression “stretch forth thy hands” was, during New Testament times, sometimes used to express a martyr’s action in stretching forth his hands on a cross to be crucified, and “another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not,” might be referring to the girding of a rope around the martyr’s underarms to force him along the path to his cross. But that is simply a possibility I will mention in passing that may not be the correct interpretation of these passages. It would be ironic if the man who would not die with Christ as he boasted before his death, would, in the end, die for his testimony of him. If the traditional teachings of how

the eleven died are correct, this would be true of them all.

John 21:20-22 – Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth t

hee? [21] Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? [22] Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

In Arkansas terminology he told Peter what he chose for John to do was none of Peter’s business, and that Peter should concentrate on his own assigned job in following him, and keep his nose out of his plan for John. I have found a great peace in my life since

I started practicing this principle. I feed the word of God, pasture the flock in a New Testament church in Dardanelle, Arkansas, and try to do the work of an evangelist.

John 6:62,63 – What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? [63] It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

II Timothy 3:16 to 4:5 – All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: [17] That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

[1] I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; [2] Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. [3] For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; [4] And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. [5] But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

God floats my stick, and how God and/or you directs your stick down the stream of live to the judgment seat

of his Son, is none of my business. God is my judge and your judge, and I am not yours, nor are you mine.

Romans 14:4 – Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.

Matthew 11:28-30 – Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. [29] Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
