I have contended for 35 years that the Middle East war is inevitable and that it will be conventional, not nuclear.

The primary purpose of having nuclear weapons is to prevent nations having them not to launch theirs against you. If a nation does not have them they are at the mercy of all who do. The fear of Iran developing nuclear weapons has never been of any concern to me, nor has the outbreak of an inevitable conventional war in the Middle East. I look forward with great anticipation of the fulfillment of prophecy by its beginning, and of the coming of Messiah’s Second Advent, which ends it at Armageddon.

The mad rush for both Syria and Iran to obtain nuclear warheads to act as a deterrent to cause Israel not to launch a pre-emptive strike at them, continues on a day to day basis in the Middle East. In spite of being in a definite minority, I do not believe either Syri

a or Iran is developing the nuclear weapons to launch against Israel in a pre-emptive strike. They are acutely aware Israel has an abundant number of nuclear warheads on many Jericho missiles in the Negev, many more than enough to end Syria and Iran as nations on this planet.

Syria, Iran, and all their allies do not want a nuclear war. They all want a conventional war, in which they have a fantastic numerical advantage.

Their development of an arsenal of nuclear warheads is strictly for deterrence of an Israeli strike against them, while they attack Israel in a conventional war.

Almost one-quarter of the population in Israel is non-Jewish, and four-fifths of the non-Jewish are of the Islamic faith, so it is unlikely Iran and Syria have a desire to inflame members of their own religion or the huge international community, by nuking the non-Jewish gro up.

The populations of the world need to be concerned about a destruction coming on the earth by a tectonic chaos produced by God on an ungodly world. It will be far worse than a nuclear holocaust.

German Intelligence: “Iran Can Set Off a Bomb within Six Months”

Iran will soon be able to produce atomic bombs and perform underground nuclear testing, just as North Korea has done, experts in the German Foreign Intelligence Service (BND) have told Stern.

“If they want to, they will be able to set off a uranium bomb within six months,” a BND expert said.

Iran is focusing on building missiles capable of transporting nuclear bombs to targets as far as Europe. According to a senior BND official, these efforts are pursued “with massive intensity.”

The German Foreign Intelligence Service has “no doubt” that the missile program in Iran is “exclusively” aimed at the production of

atomic warheads.

The necessary missile components are being obtained through a massive network of dummy companies headed by the Iranian Said Mohammad Hosseinian. Several German companies are also involved.

While Reuters on Wednesday reported falsely that the BND had denied the Stern report, the BND did not deny the report.

Defense official: Israel readying for attack on Iran

Israel’s recent deployment of warships across the Red Sea should be seen as serious preparation for an attack on Iran, an Israeli defense official told the Times of London on Thursday.

“This is preparation that should be taken seriously. Israel is investing time in preparing itself for the complexity of an attack on Iran. These maneuvers are a message to Iran that Israel will follow up on its threats,” the official was quoted as saying.

Earlier this week, two Israel Navy gunboats openly sailed through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea.

The ships that passed through the Suez Canal on Tuesday were two Sa’ar 5 gunboats, the Hanit and the Eilat.

This follows a similar incident in late June, when an Israeli Dolphin-class submarine passed through the canal, later returning the same way.

The move, apparently coordinated with Egypt, is seen as a warning message to Middle Eastern radicals, first and foremost Iran.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit confirmed the crossings and said that Cairo’s agreements with Jerusalem permit Israeli military ships to transit the canal. He declined to speculate on whether the voyage was meant as a warning to Iran or anyone else.

While Israeli naval ships have gone through Suez before, the last such occurrence was at least a year ago.

An Israeli diplomat told the Times that Israel’s has been bolstering its ties with certain Arab nations just as wary of the Iranian nuclear threat. In particular, the diplomat cited a “shared mutual distrust of Iran” between Israel and Egypt.

Though neither side says so publicly, there is ongoing security coordination between Israel and Egypt, which could be expanded if necessary in the future.

Israel has an interest in a naval presence in the Red Sea for two reasons: the effort to halt arms smuggling from Iran to the Gaza Strip – which, according to international media reports, mainly takes place by sea from Iran to Sudan, and then overland via Egypt, and the effort to bolster its deterrence against Iran in the event of a direct conflict breaking out.

The mysterious explosion at the Hirbet Salim village in South Lebanon, heard on both sides of the border, occurred, DEBKAfile’s military sources report, at one of the 35 large weapons dumps the Hizballah has built illegally as near as 20 kilometers from the Israel border.

Its men failed to adhere to the handling procedures for the dozens of rockets stored there and suffered casualties, dead, wounded and missing, when they blew up.

Hizballah forces cordoned the disaster area against outside access.

Each of the Hizballah depots, containing surface-to-surface and anti-aircraft missiles, mortar shells, and large quantities of ammunition and explosives, is heavily fortified, fenced in by barbed wire and guarded by Hizballah checkpoints around the clock. At least five of these Hizballah guards were killed in the blast.

In the event of war with Israel, these arsenals are able to arm some 7,500 Hizballah militiamen who live in hiding wearing civilian clothes among the Lebanese-Israeli border villagers.

This perilous state of affairs is carefully concealed three years after the Lebanese war by Israel’s war leaders, its armed forces chiefs, the UN peacekeeping force and the Lebanese president.

They are all conspiring now to mask the facts that the Lebanese border region is swamped with vast amounts of rockets and weapons – triple the quantity Hizballah commanded on the eve of the 2006

war – and Hizballah’s return in full force in South Lebanon.

The same policy of concealment enabled Hizballah to launch its surprise attack in 2006.

This week, neither the present chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi nor the OC Northern Command Gabi Eisencott referred to Hizballah’s blatant violations of UN Security Council resolution 1701, which cut short that war with a ceasefire and a ban on Hizballah’s rearming and return to South Lebanon.

The UN peacekeeping force, deployed to prevent these violations, let them happen under its noses, together with the massive smuggling of arms to Hizballah from Iran and Syria.

After the explosion on July 15, UNIFIL headquarters was forced to admit to the presence of the arms depot as a gross violation of 1701.

Lebanese president Michel Suleiman, like UNIFIL, was caught in flagrant negligence of Hizballah’s illicit activities, and tamely offered to form a joint Lebanese-UN inquiry committee to probe the incident.

Finally, Israel’s Lebanon war leaders – most of all the former Chief of Staff Dan Halutz – whose mismanagement was widely criticized at the time – tried to cover up their failings by holding up the three-year calm on the border as proof of its success.
The prime minister at the time, Ehud Olmert, ex-foreign minister Tzipi Livni, and ex-defense minister Yehoshua Peretz, tried taking this tack, only three days later the Hirbat Salim explosion restored a sense of reality.

The truth is that the “calm” was ordered by Tehran to enable its surrogate, the Hizballah, to regroup close to the Israeli border and rearm undisturbed, so as to be ready to hit Israel on a signal when it suits Iran’s book.

The Iron Dome missile defense system successfully intercepted a number of rockets that mimicked Kassam and short-range Grad-model Katyusha rockets in a series of tests the Defense Ministry conducted this week.

Iron Dome, under development by Rafael Defense Systems, is slated to become operational sometime in 2010 and to be capable of intercepting short-range Kassam and Katyusha rockets fired by Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hizbullah in southern Lebanon.

The Iron Dome uses an advanced radar that locates and tracks the rocket, which is then intercepted by a kinetic m

issile interceptor.

“A multilevel defense system is a strategic goal for the State of Israel and will provide a layer of protection against short-range rockets,” Defense Minister Ehud Barak said.

“This will allow the IDF to fulfill its obligation to protect Israel in the best way that it can.”

The IDF has already established a new battalion that will be part of the IAF’s Air Defense Division and will operate Iron Dome. Prototypes of the Iron Dome will likely be supplied to the new battalion in the coming months.

The battalion will then commence training with the system as well as formulating a doctrine for its operation.

The IDF has also located positions along the Gaza border that will be used as bases for the system, which includes a launcher and radar installation.

After it completes the deployment of the system along the Gaza border, the IDF will begin deploying the system along the northern border with Lebanon.

Pacific test will determine Arrow’s ability to intercept Iranian missiles close to launch

In a few days, the Israeli anti-missile Arrow system will face the first real test, weather permitting, of its ability to knock out an Iranian Shehab-3 or Sejil II ballistic missile at the outset of its flight toward Israel, DEBKAfile’s military sources report.

The test will take place off central California’s Pacific coast.

Lieut. Gen. Patrick O’Reilly, director of the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency, said Tuesday, July 14: “The test will allow Israel to measure its advanced Arrow 3 system against a target with a range of more than 620 miles (1,000 km), too long for previous Arrow test sites in the eastern Mediterranean.”

The test will try and engage a target not only upwards of 1,000 km distant but close to its launch.

Until now, our military sources report, Arrow tests have been restricted by the small area of the Mediterranean Sea, the heavy air and maritime traffic in and above it, and the location of the Israeli missile launch site at Palmahim, from which missile flight westward is limited to a few hundred kilometers and disallowed in any other direction.

None of its 16 test flights has exercised the full potential of the Arrow’s operational range for intercepting the flight path of possible Iranian missile attack on Israel.

For this reason, the Israeli missile command described past tests as 100 percent successful, while the Americans rated their success “90 percent.”

The Pacific test will be launched from a point between Point Mugu and Santa Barbara north-west of Los Angeles.

It will test the Arrow in uninterrupted flight against a target in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

The closest land to the site is Japan.

According to our military sources, this third Arrow exercise from a US site will also examine US-Israeli cooperation in missile interception in the event of an Iranian response to a possible Israeli strike at Iran’s nuclear facilities or an Iranian pre-emptive missile attack on Israel.

General O’Reilly announced that this would be the first full test of the ability of the American and Israeli intercept systems to work together and “provides us the opportunity to have the Patriot system, the THAAD system and the Aegis system all interacting with the Arrow system so that we’re demonstrating full interoperability as we execute this test.”

The significance of this disclosure is that for the first time, the joint operational capabilities of the Israel-based missile intercept systems and the American

missile-intercept systems stationed in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf will be tested.

The exercise will also examine cooperation between the Israeli anti-aircraft defenses and the American satellites’ early warning devices for missile launches. The Israeli and US arrays are connected through the sophisticated FBX-T radar station positioned at Israel’s Nevatim airbase in the Negev, which is operated by soldiers and technicians belonging to EUCOM, the US European theater command.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the exercise will not feature full operation of the American intercept systems, nor will American intercept missiles be launched, except for their sensor assets. In other words, the diverse radar systems will be activated to simulate an American-Israeli response to a missile attack.

Iran is slowing down the manufacture of the Shehab-3 surface missile in favor of mass production of the more accurate two-stage 2,000-kilometer range Sejil II ballistic missile powered with solid fuel, which was successfully tested on May 20, DEBKAfile’s military and Iranian sources report.

More than 1,000 new Sejil IIs are projected to come off production lines in five years, at the rate of 200 a year.

Western sources say the Iranians are over-ambitious and can deliver no more than 10-15 missiles a year at present, although with a huge multi-billion dollar investment they might raise output to 30.

Liquid-fuel missiles like the Shehab take hours to prepare for firing, during which time they are exposed to oversight by US and Israel spy satellites, whereas the Sejil because it is powered by solid fuel has the huge advantage of stealth. It can only be detected by military satellites and early warning radar systems like the American FBX-T posted in the Israeli Negev after it is airborne and winging towards target.

Iran has also recruited Ch inese missile experts to assist

in the production of mobile launchers for the Sejil II. The combination of the solid-fuel Sejil mounted on mobile vehicles will give an Iranian missile attack the advantage of surprise, because of the difficulty of tracking and targeting them from space or the air.

DEBKAfile’s military sources add that Iran is going all out to fill its arsenal with Sejil II missiles for outwitting Israel’s Arrow interceptors if and when they attack Israel. Iran is in mass production of long-range, solid-fuel Sejil surface Missiles.

Western missile experts calculate that if Iran lets loose against Israel a simultaneous barrage of dozens of Shehab-3 and a handful of Sejil II, the Arrow will only intercept some of them; the rest will reach their targets.

Iran’s arms industry is driving forward at top speed to attain this capability. Israel has entered the arms race by stepping up production of the Arrow anti-missile systems.

At some point, Israel strategists had hoped the surge of unrest in Tehran sparked by the disputed June 12 presidential election would result in the regime pulling funds out of nuclear and missile industries and investing in projects for improving the lives of the disaffected populace. But the challenge to its authority has had the opposite effect.

The Islamic rulers have opted for speeding up weapons production and maximizing their tools of war rather than home benefits.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Israel will soon test an Arrow interceptor missile on a U.S. missile range in the Pacific Ocean in a joint exercise that also will involve three U.S. missile defense systems, a top U.S. general said on Tuesday.

Army Lieutenant General Patrick O’Reilly, director of the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency, said the test will allow Israel to measure its advanced Arrow system against a target with a range of more than 620 miles (1,000 km), too long for previous Arrow test sites in the eastern Mediterranean.

The Arrow system, jointly developed by Israel and the United States, is designed to defend the Jewish state against possible ballistic missile attacks from Iran and Syria.

“They are having a flight test soon this summer,” O’ Reilly told reporters.

“They’re limited to the range of the missile they can test in the eastern Mediterranean. There’s a safety issue,” he said. “That’s the primary purpose of them coming to the United States to use our test range.”

O’Reilly did not say when the test flight would occur and other Pentagon officials were not immediately available for comment.

“The upcoming test also provides us the opportunity to have the Patriot system, the THAAD system and the Aegis system all interacting with the Arrow system so that we’re demonstrating full interoperability as we execute this test,” he added.

Israel carried out a successful test launch of its Arrow II interceptor missile in April, shooting down a target designed to simulate an Iranian Shehab missile over the Mediterranean.

Israel Radio said the April exercise was the 16th test launch of an Arrow. A defense source in Israel said 90 percent of the tests have been successful.

At least two Arrow batteries have been deployed in Israel, which has been testing the system to improve its performance at high altitudes against multiple incoming missiles.

Israel fears that Iran’s uranium enrichment program is aimed at producing nuclear weapons that could be placed on medium- to long-range m

issiles. Iran denies the allegation.

Fatah Official: “Our Goal is Not Peace, but Rather Palestine”

(Israelnationalnews.com) “Our goal has never been peace,” says a Fatah official in a PA TV panel. “Peace is a means; the goal is Palestine” – meaning the conquest of Israel.

Palestinian Media Watch (PMW), directed by Itamar Marcus, reports on a panel discussion on a television program of the Fatah organization broadcast this past week. Headed by Mahmoud Abbas, Fatah is considered the more moderate wing of the Palestinian Authority, compared with Hamas.

The panel discussion shows that in actuality, Fatah is no less firm than Hamas in seeking the goal of Israel’s destruction. Kifah Radaydeh, the deputy head of the Jerusalem chapter of Fatah, says openly that the PA will resume violence and terror against Israel when Fatah is “capable,” and “according to what seems right.”

“It has been said that we are negotiating for peace,” she further stated, “ but our goal has never been peace.

Peace is a means; the goal is Palestine.”

Radaydeh is considered a “promising and rising young force” in Fatah, according to a PMW source, “and this report will likely give her extra prominence. But we have to publicize her words in order that the truth about the PA and Fatah be known.”

PMW was established in 1996 to “gain an understanding of Palestinian society through the monitoring of the Palestinian Arabic language media and schoolbooks,” its website states.

The organization “analyzes Palestinian Authority culture and society from numerous perspectives, including studies on summer camps, poetry, schoolbooks, religious ideology, crossword puzzles, and more.

[It plays] the critical role of documenting the contradictions between the image the Palestinians present to the world in English and the messages to their own people in Arabic.”

Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik, writing this latest PMW report, emphasize that when Fatah refers to “Palestine,” as when Radaydeh says the “goal is Palestine,” the reference is to all of Israel. As proof, it is noted that the Fatah flag still shows the map of Israel under rifles.

In addition, Fatah MP Najat Abu Bakr said in a PA TV interview last year that Fatah’s goal remains the destruction of Israel, but that their political plan is to focus on returning to the 1967 borders. “It doesn’t mean that we don’t want the 1948 borders,” Abu Bakr said, referring to all of Israel,” but rather that “our current political program is to say that we want the 1967 borders.”

Just four months ago, senior PA official Mohammed Dahlan stressed that Fatah adamantly refuses to recognize Israel, and that even the Palestinian Authority’s recognition is only for the sake of receiving foreign aid: …..…the Fatah movement does not recognize Israel, even today… [such recognition is] required of the government but not of the Fatah, so that this government will be able to offer the necessary assistance, to carry out the necessary reconstruction, to offer assistance to the sick, to bring relief to needy families… This can be dealt with [only] by a government that has relations with the international community, one that is acceptable to the international community, in order that we can work together and benefit from the international community.”

America Cannot Win a War on the Asian Mainland

There has long been stated by many military strategists a simple straightforward premise: “A non-Asian country cannot win a war on the Asian mainland.” General Douglas Mac Arthur believed this to

be true, and I have believed it since serving two tours on its southern boundaries. It is certainly possible for a non-Asian country to attack and completely occupy an Asian mainland country, and to maintain control for a short time, but in the end they are always forced to withdraw due to guerilla warfare successes in producing casualties among the non-Asians. Such has been, and will continue to be, the case in Iraq and Afghanistan.

War in the Middle East is inevitable. The only question is WHEN Islam will feel secure enough in their confidence Israel�

��s allies won’t join her in the actual fighting, that

it will attack Israel.

A few years ago I came to the conclusion Islam could reach that confidence level as early as 2010 or as late as 2015. I am still of that persuasion, but the major parameter in the equation of WHEN is how soon the majority of our troops get out of the Middle East.

The next couple of years will see all American troops withdrawn completely from Iraq, and within a year after that they are likely to withdraw from Afghanistan. I certainly agree wholeheartedly with the excerpt from DEBKAfile that follows our Archive Prophecy Update 114C from April 7, 2003.

Iraq – A Biblical Land of Conquerors and Confusion

The post Saddam government’s character and temperament cannot be expected to maintain a personality that manifests a long-term gratitude for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Its history dictates that initial expressions of thanksgiving must slowly, but surely, return to the standard Islamic attitude toward the big devil United States, and the little devil Israel. It will never degenerate to the Saddam regime madness, but Iraq will be among the 10 nations that attack Israel some three and on-half years before the final battle of Armageddon.

The new civilian government, which will eventually be installed, will have a violent mixture of the intermingled blood of the 12 sons of Ishmael (the first son of Abraham), the six sons of Keturah by Abraham, and the two sons of Lot (Abraham’s nephew). The first post flood population in the Iraq area was ruled by Noah’s great grandson, Nimrod, who the son of Cush, the son of Ham. Asshur, the grandson of Shem, the son of Noah, peopled the northern part. So, in this area you have the intermingled blood of the descendants of all the aforementioned ancestors.

As a matter of fact, the word translated as “mingled” in Daniel 2:43 is “Arab.” The seed of all these ancestors has certainly been “mingled” in the production of offspring, but they have not been able to cleave together continuously except under the control of a very strong leader, and then only for a relatively short period of time. The great Assyrian warrior kings of 800 to 600 B.C., followed by the great Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar, and the famous Kurd Saladin from northern Iraq, who united the mingled tribes to drive the crusaders out of Jerusalem in 1187, have shown that only a strong-willed ruler can unite them, and then only for a specific purpose of conquest, which is invariably followed by a period of empire decay as the cleavage of many different bloodlines crumbles. The coming antichrist will be able to unite them for a while, but in the end they will break apart. He will be like Nimrod in character.

Daniel 11:36 – And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.

Daniel 2:42,43 – And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. [43] And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.

I have always taught that I believed the antichrist would come out of Syria (See Prophecy Updates 62,63,64,65,66,67,68, and 69), but I have repeatedly stated that I am only certain he will come out of the old Assyrian empire, which would include Lebanon, extreme southeastern Turkey, and northern Iraq. So I will be watching very carefully to see if someone from northern Iraq becomes the President of Iraq.

It will take a really strong, and extremely clever, ruler to unite the Sunni, Shiite, and Kurdish factions across Iraq.

The 10 toes and 10 horns of Daniel are the same 10 horns of John’s first and second beasts. They are not Europe

an nations, and the antichrist is not a European. He is the Assyrian of Micah’s fifth chapter, and the 10 toes and 10 horns are basically mingled (Arab) descendants of Abraham, who practice the Islamic faith – a faith that would be the worship of a strange god unknown to Abraham.

The division of the vast riches of the Iraqi oil fields among the different ethnic groups within Iraq would most certainly gain him a loyal following among all the Islamic clerics.

Daniel 11:37,38 – Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

[38] But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.

[39] Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.

Daniel 7:24 – And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.

Revelation 17:12,13 – And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. [13] These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.

So, Lord willing, I will be paying very close attention to the interplay between the new Iraqi government, Syria, and Iran. This is going to be a very interesting scenario.

Military analysts: Afghanistan War is un-winnable – even with boosted coalition strength

The approximately 60,000 NATO forces fighting in Afghanistan are unable to achieve the goals of the war – even with the additional 21,000 US combat troops promised this year and “the big jump in the size of Afghan security forces” demanded by the new US commander, Gen. Stanley McChrystal.

DEBKAfile’s military analysts see no real corroboration for the UK Chief of Defense Staff Sir Jock Stirrup’s assertion that the Taliban is “losing” in Afghanistan and “real governance” is emerging in Afghanistan.

He spoke Saturday, July 11 after the deaths of eight British troops in 24 hours in the embattled South Afghan province of Helmand, which the British death toll in 10 days to 15 and 184 in the nine-year war.

The 3,000 British troops were hit devastatingly in the third week of their Operation Panther’s Claw, launched to clear central Helmand of Taleban insurgents before Afghanistan’s August elections. A total 9,000 UK troops are deployed in the country.

The main thrust of the effort, the large-scale Operation Khanjar or Strike of the Sword, was mounted on July 2 by 4,000 US marines and 650 Afghan troops in the southern part of the province bordering on Pakistan.

July already threatens to become one of the bloodiest months of the war, with seven US troops killed Monday, July 6, and another five NATO soldiers in southern Afghanistan Friday, July 10.

Most of the losses were caused by powerful roadside bombs (IEDs) and some suicide attacks.

The two combined operations are not expected by most military observers to meet expectations in Washington and London for altering the course of the nine-year old war. In fact, the situation is expected to deteriorate further. Taliban spies in the local population have identified the smaller British force as the weaker link and are pounding it ruthlessly, so as to bring the American units to the rescue and slow their advance in the south.

The Taliban have the advantage of not being dependent on outside supplies of food, water or ammo, like the NATO forces; they have buried numerous secret bases hidden in the local villages where they go to ground to strike at approaching American or British units by stealth. When pressed, they melt into the population and become invisible.

In a typical instance last week, when US marines trapped Taliban fighters in a residential compound and persuaded them to let the women and children leave, they discovered too late that some of the “women” were insurgents hidden under burqas.

The Taliban can also call on their ties with local drug lords in nearby Pakistan for fresh fighting strength, cash, weapons and ammo.

The American commanders of Strike of the Sword are under orders to capture and “to hold” territory in Helmand and strike up friendly relations with the local population. But no one in Helmand, Kabul or even Washington can tell how long US forces must – or can – hold onto these areas in order to win

them away from the Taliban. Can they hang on in combat situations for two or three years?

This predicament applies to other Taliban strongholds in Afghanistan – especially the east and south, where they are mounting successful attacks against the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and the Afghan government. In the last three years they have regained lost terrain in key provinces such as Wardak near the capital Kabul and are close to retaking the southern town of Musa Qala.

The only silver lining in the Afghan war cloud for now is that the Taliban cannot hope to recover the whole of Afghanistan in view of its many tribal enemies at home.
