Hizbollah Will Be Used To Eventually Trigger An End Time Jihad Attack!

Daniel 11:40 – And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

Alexander the Great, the “notable horn” in Daniel 8:5, which was “broken” and replaced by four other horns in Daniel 8:8 that represented the four generals who would divide his kingdom among themselves after his death, was still very much alive when he captured Israel in 332 B.C., only to fall dead nine years later in 323 B.C.

In the division of his kingdom into four parts, Egypt and Israel were given to Ptolemy I, and his descendants ruled over Israel until 212 B.C., when Antiochus III conquered Israel from the north, and the Seleucids ruled over Israel until 167 B.C. The many Seleucid kings that ruled over Syria were individually identified as the “king of the north” by Daniel, and he called the individual Ptolemaic kings that ruled over Israel and Egypt the “king of the south.”

Daniel prophesied Alexander’s death some 268 years before it occurred. In Daniel’s prophecies from Daniel 11:5 to 11:45 he refers to two types of kings, kings of the north, who would rule as Syrian kings to the north of Israel, and to kings of the south that ruled over the territory that made up the Ptolemaic kingdom to the south of Syria. So the king of the south in Daniel 11:40 is the ruler in Israel “at the time of the end,” while the willful king of the north is the ruler in Syria. I firmly believe that it will be the terrorist army known as Hizbollah, under the directions of Syria and Iran, that

will deliberately perform an act designed to get Israel to push north into Syria and Lebanon as an act of retribution, which will give international justification for 10 Arab nations, led by the Syrian ruler, to rumble south into Israel in a lightening surprise Jihad. I have watched the rise of the Hizbollah terrorist arm since it began, and observed a weaving of its tentacles across many nations in an ever increasing involvement in the amazing recent growth of worldwide terrorism. I think it worthy of giving a brief history of the movement, and an outline of its current activities, because I believe it will be the catalyst used by Islam to lure Israel into the “end time” push into the territories of Syria and Lebanon. And I believe this push is likely to occur at some point in time between 2010 and 2015.

Much of the information which follows was taken from a report by Lewis Lipkin, which was listed under the title “HIZBOLLAH INTERNATIONAL.”

Hizbollah was officially inaugurated in June

of 1982. At that time the Sunni Syrian government allowed the Shi’ite Iranian government to send a specialized group of 1000 into the north-south oriented Bekaa Valley of Lebanon, a long valley that had been occupied by some 60,000 Syrian forces.

The group of 1000 was made up of military and religious teachers, who were members of the Ayatollah Khomeni’s Revolutionary Guards, and whose primary function was to establish a connection with Lebanon’s Shi’ia revolutionists. The first year of activity by this group was directed toward staying out of the limelight, during which time it could grow into a structured operational army of terrorists dedicated to the destruction of Israel and, eventually, when it grew sufficiently, to the destruction of all nations outside the protection and approval of its god Allah.

It grew rapidly from its onset, recruiting the young Lebanese Shi’ites to its mission. Its military wing swelled due to abundant Iranian funding from huge oil revenues and the Syrian permissive attitude, which grew as long as western and Israeli forces stayed in Lebanon to promote a fragile peace. By late 1983, the Hizbollah terrorist army had risen to almost 10,000 in number, and then it came out of the international terrorist closet forever by the truck bombing of the U.S. Marine headquarters in Beirut.

The ruthless slaughter of 241 of the 300 sleeping marines, as well as 56 France paratroopers in a separate incident, led to the withdrawal of the multilateral peace keeping force from all of Lebanon, with the exception of Syria, which then, for all practical purposes, took over Lebanon, at times referring to it as “greater” Syria. The loss of American marines was officially denounced by Islamic governments while their people celebrated wildly in their streets. Hizbollah had been so cleverly kept under wraps by Syria and Iran, that the attack was attributed to some vague “Shi’ite militant group.”

The Iranians succeeded in gaining the most control over Syria’s Shi’ite group, the Amal militia. They expanded from the Bekaa valley and became dominant in all of Lebanon’s southern Shi’ite villages, such that now, in reality, this area is both the territory and stronghold of Hizbollah. The growth of the Hizbollah military wing has been marked by many car-bombings, kidnappings of some West Europeans and Americans, kidnappings and murders of Israelis, many intermittent outbreaks of the shelling of Israeli communities in northern Israel, and, by the close of the twentieth century, more than 4,000 rockets of the Katyusha series had been fired at the single town of Kiryah Shemona. Recent shifts in Syria toward a more militant policy toward the U.S., has caused it to change some of its playing second fiddle to Iran in the control of Hizbollah, and this trend will continue until the aforementioned Jihad against Israel occurs. Syria is currently in control for when, and how, long shelling of Israel attacks will be conducted, but the real control of Hizbollah still lies in the hands of Iran.

Hizbollah has been steadily spreading its terrorist cells across the surface of the earth. It has organized cells in Europe, the United States, and South America. They are named “The Party of God,” and the following quote from Martin Kramer’s book, “Hizbollah’s Vision of the West,” makes plain their future intentions and bonding with Iran.

“We are the sons of the Nation of Hizbollah, whose vanguard God made victorious in Iran, reestablishing the nucleus of a central Islamic state in the world. We abide by the orders of the sole and wise and just command represented by the Supreme Jurisconsult who meets the necessary qualifications, and who is presently incarnate in the Imam and Guide, the great Ayatollah Ruhallah Al-Musawi Al-Khomeini, may his authority be perpetuated, enabler of the revolution of Muslims and harbinger of their glorious Renaissance.”

The Iranian–Hizbollah program for WORLD conquest was set forth by Khomeini while he was still in exile. He stated: “There are two kinds of war in Islam: one is called jihad (holy war), which means the conquest of other countries in accordance with certain conditions. The other type of war is to preserve the independence of the Muslim country and the repulsion of foreigners.

Jihad, or holy war, which is for the conquest of other countries and kingdoms, becomes incumbent after the formation of the Islamic state in the presence of the Imam or in accordance with his command. Then Islam makes it incumbent upon all adult males, provided they are not disabled or incapacitated, to prepare themselves for the conquest of other countries so that the writ of Islam is obeyed in EVERY country in the WORLD.”

The planned conquest of Israel by Islam is not the end of Islamic fanaticism generated out of Iran. This is the pure religious zeal that drives men and women to pay the ultimate price of their lives

to bring the religion of Allah to all nations of the world through conquest. This religion represents the joy of physical death in Jihad as a rare privilege that gives one a position of eternal joy in the heaven of Allah.

The day after September 11, 2001, President Bush was quick to declare that a war on terror would be directed against ALL terrorist groups of “global reach.” The Party of God is just as much a terrorist group as the Al Queda, but does not arouse the same degree of reaction or concern in the American media and government, most likely because it has not yet struck at America’s heartland. Rest assured that in time it will soon do so at the command of Syria and Iran.

An old article by Haaretz Correspondence Nathan Guttman stated that Hizbollah has been moving many fighters to Iraq to battle American troops and those who favor the new Iraqi government. The transfer has been carried out through Syria, following an Iranian initiative. The transit through Syrian territory is being permitted by Damascus along its lengthy porous border with Iraq. Lebanese Hizbollah fighters are part of a broader force of pro-Iranian militants that operates in Iraq to destabilize the country and undermine the intent of the Americans to formulate an independent country with civil liberties. Both Syria and Iran are anxious to see the Hizbollah establish solid operational units in Iraq before the new government is in place next week.

The Congressional bipartisan commission, in its interim report, indicated its inquiry into the 9/11 event showed that cooperation between Hizbollah and Al-Qaida is extensive.

The local Hizbollah “specialty,” the occasional shelling of northern Israeli towns, is now almost certainly under Syrian control.

The timing and intensity of such recent shelling has been taken as a barometer of Syria’s choice of Iraq as its bedfellow as it pulls ever further from any meaningful relations with the U.S. and Israel. One of these days, likely between 2010 and 2015, Hizbollah will launch a particularly heavy shelling into some of the northern Israeli cities, which will be intended to be the straw that breaks the back of Israel’s patience. The Syrians and Iranians will have a massive force lying concealed in the long, deep NE-SW Palmyra fold valleys of southwestern Syria, poised and waiting for the push north into Lebanese-Syrian territory by Israel, the king of the south, in retaliation for the shelling. Israel will be stunned at the massiveness and effectiveness of the force repulsing them, and the following Scriptures will be fulfilled in quick order. The king of the north will drive south in Israel to Beersheba and conquer all of Egypt.

Assad welcomes Obama policy of dialogue

Syrian President ‘appreciates’ US under Obama adopted dialogue as way to deal with difficult issues.

DAMASCUS – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad welcomed on Thursday the policy of dialogue with his country initiated by his US counterpart Barack Obama.

Assad said he “appreciates that President Obama has adopted dialogue as the way to deal with difficult issues,” a reference to years of sour relations with former president George W. Bush.

He was speaking during a meeting with visiting US Congressman Tim Walz and Senator Ted Kaufman, both members of Obama’s Democratic party, the official Sana news agency reported.

Assad spoke of the “need to work to lift the obstacles that are hampering Syrian-American relations.”

Ties between Washington and Damascus became strained after the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, and the assassination of Lebanese leader Rafiq Hariri in 2005 that was blamed on Syria. Damascus denies any involvement.

Washington recalled its ambassador in February 2005 following Hariri’s killing.

Obama’s new top Middle East envoy, Jeffrey Feltman, visited Syria in March in what was the first high-level US trip in four years.

He returned earlier this month for further meetings, describing them as constructive and vowing to pursue dialogue.

Other congressional delegations have also visited Syria.

Syria and key US-ally Israel engaged in indirect Turkish-sponsored peace talks last year following an eight-year hiatus, but they were suspended after Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip in December-January.

Assad said in March that Syria could hold direct peace talks with Israel if the United States acted as an arbitrator.

There will be no “moderate” Islamic rulers after Jerusalem falls and Israel is driven into the Negev Wilderness.

American poll on popularity of Arab leaders results in grim findings

Who’s the most popular ruler across the Arab world? It isn’t Mubarak, who enjoys skyrocket ing sympathy that is eras

ing hatreds and clashes at this time, in the wake of the tragic death of his eldest grandson. It also isn’t Lebanon’s president, with everyone tense in the face of the large-scale terror attack feared ahead of the Lebanese parliamentary elections.

It is certainly not Gaddafi either, the most veteran ruler, who enjoys cheers that are orchestrated from above through threats and bribes.

The answer is both surprising and disappointing: Bashar Assad, Syria’s president, reached the top spot in a poll whose findings stunned even those who carried it out – researchers at the Brookings Institute.

After 10 years of a regime characterized by violence and hesitance, the dictator from Damascus heads the parade. In third spot, unsurprisingly, we find the hero of the swamps and back alleys, Hizbullah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah. The second spot was taken by a grey figure, almost unknown around here: Sheikh Mohammad al-Nayan, the ruler of Abu-Dhabi, the Gulf’s prosperous heaven.

The survey was undertaken in six states: Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia. Two of the rulers of these states, Mubarak and the Saudi King, publically declared they are no friends of Assad because of the Iranian bear hug and because of his involvement in smuggling terrorists and stimulating terror attacks against them. Also, we shouldn’t forget the big mouth Assad has shown at their expense every time he faces a microphone or cameras.

More than anything else, the stars of this popularity parade blatantly attest to the bankruptcy of the vision of democracy and human rights born at the White House. Does anyone truly believe that if they flew

the poll respondents far away from Syria, they would elect a ruler who clings to power only via threats, scare-mongering, and jails for political prisoners?

Heroes of fear

Nasrallah, the master of media spins (no longer around here at least, thank God,) also attests to the victory of exaggerated passion at the expense of the citizens: Thousands lost their homes and belongings, hundreds became disabled, and hundreds of others lost their lives three years ago.

Nasrallah paid (using millions of dollars sent from Tehran,) and rushed to express his regret: Had I known, he smiled to himself, I would not have abducted the Israeli soldiers; had I guessed what was in store, I would not bring disaster and destruction. Nasrallah, just like Assad, is a hero of fear.

What are the conclusions of this poll

? A ruler (Mubarak, for example, or Jordan’s King Abdullah, and also the Saudi king) who insists on democracy may lose his job. The Islamic organiz ations are just waiting for an opportunity to provoke street riots and fan the flames

at mosques.

You hold democratic elections in the territories and you get Hamas; open the polling stations in Egypt, and the Islamic Brotherhood will replace you; the same is true for Jordan.

Assad, on the other hand, sleeps well at night on the mattress of dictatorship. Nobody dares complain, there is no malicious opposition like the one emerging in Egypt, there are

no protests outside parliament as is the case in Amman, or one million signatures of miserable women in Saudi Arabia.

The findings of this popularity survey were placed on the desk of President Obama. Next week, we won’t be shocked to hear the American president, in his speech to the Muslim nation, talking about peace and its economic advantages, while forgetting, and not by accident, to mention the bothersome issue of democracy and human rights.

The coming Empire of Antichrist will cover most of the known world at the time John wrote the Book of Revelation in about 95 A.D. It will not cover the known world of today. It will be a Caliphate.

When Muhammad died, Muslims faced the challenge of creating institutions to preserve the community.

Muslims believe that the revelation was completed with the work of Muhammad, who is described as the seal of the prophets.

The leaders after Muhammad were described only as caliphs, or successors to the Prophet, and not as prophets themselves.

The first four caliphs were companions of the Prophet and their period of rule (632-661) is described by the majority of Muslims as the age of the Rightly Guided Caliphate.

This was an era of expansion during which Muslims conquered the Sasanid (Persian) Empire and took control of the North African and Syrian territories of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire. The Muslim community was transformed from a small city-state controlling much of the Arabian Peninsula into a major world empire extending from northwest Africa to central Asia.

A caliphate is an Islamic federal government representing the political unity of the Muslim world despite theological differences, with the Caliph, as the head of state, representing the heir of Muhammad’s political authority.

From the time of Muhammad successors until 1923, it gave varying degrees of unity among the diverse nations that adopted Islam. A caliphate is the only form of government that has full approval in early Islamic theology, and “is the core political concept of Sunni Islam, according to the consensus of the Muslim majority in the early centuries.”

The caliph, or head of state, was often known as “Commander of the Faithful”, or more colloquially, the leader of all the Muslims. Each member state (Sultanate, Wilayah, or Emirate) of the Caliphate had its own governor (Sultan, Wali or Emir). The Land of Islam was referred to as any land under the rule of the caliphate. A land populated by non-Muslims and land not under rule of the caliphate was referred to as the “Land of Non-Islam,” even if its inhabitants were Muslims, because they were not citizens under Islamic law.

The first capital of the Caliphate after Muhammad died was in Medina. At times in Muslim history there have been rival claimant caliphs in different parts of the Islamic world, and divisions between the Shi’a and Sunni parts.

Caliph is the head of state in a Caliphate, and the title for the leader of the global Islamic nation.

It is a transliterated version of an Arabic word which means “successor” or “representative”. The early leaders of the Muslim nation following Muhammad’s (570–632) death were called “Khalifat ar-rasul Allah”, meaning the political successor to the prophet of God (referring to Muhammad). Some academics prefer to transliterate the term as Khalif.

It is also found as a personal name in some countries (Amir or Aamir).

(Caliph also became the term used to designate the head of a Sufi order.)

After the first four caliphs (Abu Bakr, Umar ibn al-Khattab, Uthman ibn Affan, and Ali ibn Abi Talib), the title was claimed by the Umayyads, the Abbasids, and the Ottomans, and at times, by competing dynasties in Spain, Northern Africa, and Egypt. Most historical Muslim governors were called sultans or amirs, and gave allegiance to a caliph, but at times had very little real authority.

The title has been defunct s ince the Republic of Turkey abolished the Ottoman caliphate

in 1924.

Ahmadinejad and Assad: Iran and Syria Are Leading a New World Order; The Time of America and the West Is Over

Introduction

In early May 2009, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad in Damascus. In a joint statement issued after the meeting, the two declared that the relations between Iran and Syria were strategic and served as an example to the region and to the world at large. They added that Iran and Syria were leading a dramatic transformation in the region, as part of a new world order which would replace the old world order that the U.S. has led since the end of World War II.

The two presidents called to expel the foreign forces from the region, stressing that the Middle East would from now on be run by its own peoples under the leadership of Syria and Iran.

They also emphasized the importance of strengthening Iraq and of the withdrawal of the U.S. forces from it, as well as the need for “quadrilateral cooperation” between the “regional powers,” i.e. Iran, Syria, Iraq, and Turkey.

It seems that since this meeting, Damascus is explicitly adopting Iran’s anti-American stance and pointedly aligning itself with Iran.

In fact, the Syrians have even adopted Iran’s rhetoric and Ahmadinejad’s characteristic phrases – such as “new world order” or “opening new locks with old keys” – which were used in Syrian newspaper reports about Ahmadinejad’s visit.

Following are excerpts from statements by the two presidents following the meeting, and from Syrian and Iranian press reports about it.

The U.S. and the West Now Need Iran and Syria

Following the meeting with Assad, Ahmadinejad said, “The circumstances in the region are rapidly changing [in accordance] with Syria’s and Iran’s goals, and those who have for years demanded that Syria and Iran stop insisting on their rights and on the rights of the peoples of the region [i.e. the U.S. and the West] are now explicitly declaring that they need the help of Iran and Syria… Those who wanted to force Iran and Syria to withdraw [from their positions] now need them in order to solve their problems.

The same ones who described Iran and Syria as ‘the Axis of Evil’ [i.e. the U.S. under Bush] now want relations with both [countries]…

“We need to reach the point where the involvement of foreigners and of those who speak [the language of] violence is completely eliminated from our region, leaving it free and brimming with progress and friendship… The enemies of the region’s nations, who in the past spoke with arrogance and referred to Iran and Syria with insulting epithets, are now in a position of weakness, facing a complete dead end and unable to solve even the smallest problem. They have no wise strategy for resolving the problems of Palestine, Afghanistan or any other region in the world.” [1]

The Time of the West Is Over; A New World Order Is Emerging

Ahmadinejad added, “Alongside the resistance and steadfastness, we must also strive to create a new world order; otherwise new oppressive regimes will emerge.” [2] He called the West’s fundamental values “inhuman and belonging to past decades,” adding: “They [i.e. the Westerners] are trying to open new doors with the keys to old locks, without noticing that, today, it is the humane and divine path that is the code to opening the locks of humanity. They are decades behind, and can be described, in two words, as politically retarded… The philosophy and order that emerged after World War II have come to the end of their road, and [the West] is unable to offer solutions for the world’s problems, since its thinking is based on discrimination and on [undermining] security.” [3]

Significantly, an editorial of the Syrian daily Teshreen made very similar statements, stating: “…All the regional and international forces [now] understand that the keys to the region [are in the hands of Iran and Syria], and that they are the ones standing at the [region’s] diplomatic gates. [Nobody] can enter or bypass these gates unless Damascus and Tehran understand, agree, and are convinced that this serves [first of all] their own interests, and after that the interest of the others.

Ahmadinejad also said after the meeting with Assad that current circumstances in the world, in many domains, were not favorable to the superpowers that use the language of force, particularly the U.S. He added: “The main goals and tendencies of the American statesmen have remained the same, but they are unable to do anything, because they have grown weak… The American statesmen are trapped in a dilemma: They wish to preserve the Zionist regime, but they need Iran and Syria… These two countries have stood fast in the face of those who use [the language of] violence, relying on humane values and on victory by the grace of God, and today the circumstances in the world and in the region are rapidly changing [in a direction that corresponds with] their outlook and goals. Those who, for many years, said that Iran and Syria must be pressured, and wanted to prevent [them] from defending the rights of the peoples in the region, now openly declare that they require the help of Tehran and Damascus in solving their problems. This is a great victory… [and] I believe that sympathy with the shared ideas [of Syria and Iran], and the steadfastness [of these countries], are the secret behind this victory. Today we are beginning on the path of triumph, and even greater victories lie ahead.” [5]

The notion of a new world order was also stressed by former Lebanese MP Nasser Qandil, who is close to the Syrian regime. In a Teshreen article, he wrote that the situation in the region has changed since the American-Israeli strategic alliance failed in its efforts to crush the Syrian-Iranian strategic alliance. He stated: “This week’s Syrian-Iranian summit, and the statements by presidents Assad and Ahmadinejad, underscore the strength of the Syrian and Iranian leaderships, and their profound awareness that a new [situation has emerged, heralding]… the establishment of a new regional order under their leadership…” The new situation, Qandil added, is evident in the alliances currently being considered by Turkey (i.e. its emerging alliances with Syria and Iran). [6]

Iran-Syria Relations – A Model for the Whole World

Following their meeting, Ahmadinejad and Assad called the relations between Iran and Syria “strategic,” and declared that that “[these] relations and deepening cooperation, in various domains, will rapidly develop and prosper.” [7] Ahmadinejad stated that the bilateral relations between Iran and Syria were limitless, adding: “We want to present the brotherly relations between [the two countries] as an example to the region and the world.

We have complete mutual understanding regarding [the need] to maintain coordination between the nations of the region and their governments.” [8] Assad said, in a similar vein, “The relations between Syria and Iran and strategic. The visit of President Ahmadinejad highlights the importance of these strategic relations and the need for ongoing consultation and coordination between [the two countries].” [9]

The Syrian daily Al-Watan argued that it was in the Arabs’ interest to regard Iran as an ally, stating: “Syria and Sudan are the only countries that pursue a policy which sees Iran as an ally and as a force supporting the Arabs against Israel, its occupation and its aggression, and that is why [Israel’s] Netanyahu government is focusing on [Syria, Sudan and Iran]. It is in the Arabs’ interest to:

“1. Distance [themselves] from the Israeli policy of portraying Iran as the Arabs’ enemy, and avoid being captivated by the policy that tries to drive a wedge between the Arabs and Iran – for this policy serves mainly the interests of Israel at the expense of the interests of the Arabs.

“2. Regard Iran as a friend of the Arabs and as a deterring and restraining force vis-à-vis Israel and its aggression. [Iran] has had a role, and continues to have a role, in changing the balance of power in favor of the Arab position. The new balance of power, [in turn,] had a role in convincing the American administration to change its policy towards the conflict in the region. The policy of relying on America, and providing it with all the [trump] cards, does not serve the Arabs’ position or interests. [Their interest] is to strengthen themselves and reinforce the balance of power created by the victories of the resistance that was supported by Syria and Iran.” [10]

Enhancing Iran and Syria’s Cooperation with Iraq and Turkey

Ahmadinejad and Assad stressed that deepening the relations and the cooperation among the countries of the region was crucial and that “the quadrilateral cooperation between Iran, Syria, Iraq and Turkey would benefit the region’s nations.” [11]

Ahmadinejad added: “Some of the discussions [I held with Assad] concerned the establishment of tripartite cooperation between Iran, Syria, and Iraq. Bashar Al-Assad, [Iraqi Prime Minister] Nouri Al-Maliki, and I wish [to implement joint] projects in the areas of oil, gas and transportation… Iran and Syria are in favor of enhancing security and strengthening the legitimate Iraqi government. [We] believe that Iraqi unity, and the withdrawal of the foreign [forces], will benefit Iraq and the region as a whole.” Ahmadinejad explained that the presence of foreign forces in Iraq undermined security, saying: “Nobody invited them, and the sooner they leave the better – [not only for us but] also for them. If they wish to serve [someone], they should serve their own people. There are 80 million poor in America, and tens of millions of poor in Europe.” [12]

Assad said, “We are pleased with the recent developments in Iraq, especially with the recent local elections, which gave clear indications that the Iraqi people wants [its country] to be unified, and that Iraq will not move in the direction of disintegration and fighting among the people of the homeland, as some perhaps hope… [President Ahmadinejad] and I agreed that there is need to support the current Iraqi government in its efforts to bring about a reconciliation among all the Iraqi people and sectors, in order to facilitate the complete withdrawal of the [foreign] forces until the occupying troops leave, to the very last one…” [13]

The Syrian daily Al-Thawra stated, “…When [Assad and Ahmadinejad] declare that they are jointly turning towards Iraq… they are laying the foundations for an option of neighborliness, cooperation and mutual understanding. This [option will be the basis for] future plans for the [Middle] East, as a safe alternative to the [dangerous] plan that was forged far from this region and its peoples. This cooperation, and Syria and Iran’s calm handling of [various] challenges, are a message to the world – and even more so to the region – that they are the ones that have the solutions – not the countries that are now collapsing as a result of their political and economic programs. The region also has other great countries [meaning Turkey]. Together we can form not an axis to attack others, but nexuses of cooperation, so as to solve our problems and take part in solving those of the region…” [14] The Syrian daily Al-Watan quoted Ahmadinejad as saying: “Today there is talk about tripartite cooperation between Iraq, Syria and Iran, and I can add that Turkey is [also] very close to joining this regional cooperation [effort]…” [15]

Similar statements were made by Assad during the May 15-17, 2009 visit to Syria by Turkish President Abdullah Gul.

He said: “There is cooperation between Turkey and Iraq, and Turkey’s relations with Iran are [also] starting to tighten. The relations between Syria and Iraq are good and getting better, and the relations between Syria and Iran are tight…” [16]

In an Al-Watan article about Gul’s visit, Syria’s relations with Turkey were described as “a model for emulation.” The article stated that the ultimate goal is to “expand [the circle of cooperation] to include other countries in the region, such as Iraq and Iran, in order to form an economic and political [alliance] that has [both] strategic importance and an Islamic aspect – which will cause it to attract other countries, especially Arab ones. [This alliance] will ensure that the problems of the region are resolved according to the agendas of its countries, rather than the agendas of foreign [elements], and that the security of the region remains in the hands of its people…” The daily also stated that “with Iran and Arab elements included [in it, the Syrian-Turkish alliance] will become a strategic [force] causing a qualitative change in the Middle East power-balance…” This alliance, the paper added, has become possible thanks to the rise to power of the Islamic Justice and Development Party in Turkey, which caused a change in this country’s positions. [17]

Supporting the Resistance Is a Human Duty

In their statements following the meeting, Ahmadinejad and Assad stressed that “the continued support of the Palestinian resistance and of the Iraqi government until the withdrawal of the [Israeli and American] occupiers is one of Iran and Syria’s top priorities.” [18] Ahmadinejad called supporting the Palestinian resistance a human and popular duty incumbent upon Iran and Syria, saying, “[At the Durban conference] in Geneva we held up a mirror to the faces [of the Westerners], and saw how they were afraid to look even at their own reflection… When we hold a mirror up to their faces, we discover who the [real] axis of evil is…

“Today, the evil ones who speak [the language of] violence are in decline, and the Zionist regime, which is at a complete dead end, is beginning to scream like someone afraid of the dark. Syria and Iran, [on the other hand], are on the rise, thanks to their steadfastness and wisdom… Many [people] once called the Zionist regime invincible – but today even our children are no longer afraid of [the Zionists], and now not a single sensible person officially recognizes the Zionist regime.” [19]

The Syrian daily Teshreen likewise referred to the struggle with the common enemy, Israel, stating that “the existence of a joint position on Palestine, Jerusalem, the struggle with the Zionist enemy and the support for the resistance proves that [Syria and Iran] are aligned in their understanding of this enemy, his plans and his goals, and that they have come to the same conclusion regarding the importance of confronting this enemy and these plans.” [20]

Russia’s first Persian Gulf naval presence coordinated with Tehran

Russian warships are due to call Wednesday, May 27, at the Bahrain port of Manama, seat of the US Fifth Fleet in the Persian Gulf, DEBKAfile’ s military

sources reveal. They will be following in the wake of the Russian vessels already docked at the Omani port of Salalah, the first to avail themselves of facilities at Gulf ports.

Their arrival is fully coordinated between the Russian and Iranian naval commands.

According to our sources, this is the first time a Russi

an flotilla will have taken on provisions and fuel at the same Gulf ports which hitherto serviced only the US Navy.

Moscow has thus gained its first maritime foothold in the Persian Gulf.

The flotilla consists of four vessels from Russia’s Pacific Fleet: The submarine fighter Admiral Panteleyev is due at Manama Wednesday, escorted by the refueling-supply ship Izhorai, The supply-battleship Irkut and the rescue craft BM-37 are already docked in Salalah.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the Russians, like the Iranians, cover their stealthy advance into new waters by apparent movements for joining the international task force combating Somali pirates. While Iranian warships have taken up positions in the Gulf of Aden,

the Russians are moving naval units southeast into the Persian Gulf.

Monday, May 25, the Iranian naval chief, Adm. Habibollah Sayyari, announced that six Iranian warships had been dispatched to “the international waters” of the Gulf of Aden in a “historically unprecedented move… to show its ability to confront any foreign threats.” He did not bother to mention the pirates.

Russian and Iranian naval movements in the two str ategic seas are clearly synchronized

at the highest levels in Tehran and Moscow.

Our military analysts find Russia and Iran seizing the moment for supplanting positions held exclusively by the US and other western fleets.

They are taking advantage of two developments:

1. The number of US warships maintained in the Gulf has been reduced to its lowest level in two years; President Obama quietly reduced their presence near Iran’s shores in order to generate a positive atmosphere for the coming US dialogue with the Islamic Republic.

Not a single US aircraft carrier is consequently to be found anywhere in the Gulf region.

2. Monday, May 25, President Nicolas Sarkozy inaugurated France’s first naval facility in the Gulf in Abu Dhabi.

The Russian and Iranian policy-makers see no reason why Moscow cannot set up a military presence in the region if Paris can.

THE new nuclear test carried out by North Korea demonstrates the complete failure, so far, of US President Barack Obama’s softly-softly diplomacy and willingness to start afresh with old enemies.

It may be that Obama’s approach is well worth a try, but so far its yield is zero.

This is in great contrast to North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. It yields a great deal indeed. There is every chance Pyongyang will succeed in all its ambitions with its latest nuclear test.

North Korea’s first nuclear test, in October 2006, brought president George W. Bush back to the negotiating table.

North Korea’s ageing and apparently unwell dictator, Kim Jong-il, has been keen to get Obama’s attention since the new US President took office.

Last month, North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile that travelled across Japan before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.

Obama reacted coolly. Pyongyang has now gone a step further with its second ever nuclear test, which serves multiple aims for North Korea.

By all reports, Kim suffered a stroke last August. There are very good reports that he is now consolidating the power structure, and the line of succession, around him. The reflex of every North Korean institution in this context will be to demonstrate ultra-loyalty and ultra-nationalism. This means the internal atmosphere in North Korea would contribute directly to the decision to conduct such a test.

However, the technical and military aspects of this test should not be overlooked. Last month’s missile test was far more successful than the North’s previous long-range missile test. Similarly, this nuclear test has, on early reports, produced a far greater yield than the 2006 test did.

That means Pyongyang is getting much better at both missile technology and nuclear weapons technology. It is clear Pyongyang wants to possess a full suite of nuclear weapons and wants to be accepted as a nuclear weapons state.

Analysts believe Pyongyang possesses five to 10 nuclear devices. The latest test appears to have been a plutonium bomb. That means Pyongyang has used a substantial section of its nuclear fuel in this test. However, the record is th at North Korea keeps turning out to have more nuclear weapons and nuclear technology than Western intelligence assesses

at any given moment.

It may be that the highly enriched uranium program, which the North boasted of in talks with American negotiators several years ago, has also yielded fuel for nuclear weapons.

The truth is, we just do not know.

But clearly North Korea is moving steadily up the nuclear weapons food chain.

The greatest danger from the North’ s weapon

s lies in proliferation.

It has shown itself willing to sell weapons and nuclear technology

to all-comers in the past. Israel bombed a nuclear reactor in Syria the North Koreans had sold to the Syrians.

But the idea Pyongyang would never use a nuclear weapon cannot be absolutely guaranteed. Everyone assesses Pyongyang to be a rational actor, but rational actors can make colossal miscalculations. This is partly why everyone in the international system over recent years has been trying to reassure the North Koreans that they will not be subject to any pre-emptive military strike. Indeed, the US and its allies do not even seek regime change in North Korea, merely less destabilising behaviour.

North Korea is rational enough, but its rationality occurs within a framework so distinctive and self-enclosed that it does not allow outsiders to provide any effective incentives and disincentives. It is highly likely that within a few months at the most, Obama will concede to Pyongyang’s most recent dem and – which is for one-on-one negotiations between North Korea

and the US, and the effective sidelining of the Six Party talks process.

Although it is absolutely clear Pyongyang will never give up its nuclear weapons, it is quite likely that process will culminate in another US-North Korea deal, which will provide economic aid in exchange for North Korea agreeing to give up its nuclear activities.

Pyongyang may well be able to sell its Yongbyon reac

tor to the Americans for a third time, only to continue with nuclear activities at other sites and to re-open Yongbyon when the new agreement inevitably collapses. If events follow that pattern, Pyongyang’s actions will not only have been rational, but also remarkably effective as state policy.

In the meantime, the Chinese will prevent the UN from taking any serious action and will not itself prevail upon North Korea to change in fundamentals.

All the time, Obama’s hope – and Kevin Rudd’s hope too – of global nuclear disarmament will grow more distant, and his open hand of friendship will be met with a spit in the face.
