I think Secretary of State Clinton’s statement in Excerpt 2: “We don’t know what to believe about the Iranian program,” sums up the new policy now being unveiled to the American public and the international world. It will set us in the position of trusting a religiously fanatical, terrorist sponsoring, nuclear bomb building, infidel hating, Jew despising nation.

How ironic that America has lost her trust in God, but is getting ready to trust Iran.

‘Obama considering Iran policy shift’

US President Barack Obama is working on a dramatic change in strategy with regard to the Iranian nuclear program, according to officials quoted by the New York Times on Tuesday.

The shift in policy, according to the report, centers on the US dropping its insistence that the Islamic republic immediately cease all activity in its nuclear program during the initial phases of talks. The US would instead encourage Teheran to allow inspectors to visit its nuclear facilities.

The aides quoted in the New York Times report said that Obama was still deciding exact details of the plan.

“We have all agreed that is simply not going to work – experience tells us the Iranians are not going to buy it,” a senior European official involved in the talks with the US was quoted as saying of the West’s recent attempts to bring about a stop to the Iranian nuclear program. “So we are going to start with some interim steps, to build a little trust.”

The officials noted that regardless of the possible policy shift, the ultimate aim of the US and its European allies would the eventual cessation of Iran’ s nuclear enrichment program.

An Israeli official close to the US talks on the matter was quoted as putting a time limit

on such an approach, saying that Obama only had until the end of the year to bring about Iranian uranium production before Israel would reconsider military options.

An Obama official told the New York Times that such noises from Israel were not seen as “just huffing and puffing.”

The chief of the UN’s nuclear watchdog, Mohammed ElBaradei, made comments last week that seemingly supported such a move away from the previous US administration’ s approach, according to the New York Time

s report. He was quoted as calling former US president George W.

Bush’s tactics “ridiculous,” adding, “They thought that if you threatened enough and pounded the table and sent Cheney off to act like Darth Vader the Iranians would just stop.”

“If the goal was to make sure that Iran would not have the knowledge and the capability to manufacture nuclear fuel, we had a policy that was a total failure,” the IAEA chief opined.

He went on to recommend that Obama “design an approach that is sensitive to Iran’s pride.”

US refuses to put deadline on Iran nuke talks

The US decision to begin negotiations with Teheran is likely to come up during discussions later this week with visiting US Middle East envoy George Mitchell, with Israel expected to urge the US to set a short time limit for the talks.

On Friday, Zalman Shoval, a top foreign policy adviser in Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s transition team, told a group of some 40 ambassadors that Netanyahu’s position regarding US engagement with Iran was one of acquiescence, even though he held out little hope for success.

However, Shoval said, the feeling in the Netanyahu camp was that it was important for there to be a definite time limit, otherwise the Iranians would continue with their nuclear program, even as the talks continued.

Shoval said that while Israel was in favor of a short period, something along the line of two months, there were voices in the US advocating more time.

It would be a mistake if the talks were postponed until after June’s elections in Iran, and then until a new government there was formed, because that would merely buy the Iranians that much more time, Shoval said.

Late last month senior members of Congress wrote US President Barack Obama urging that he adopt a deadline for engagement with Iran, and that he apply strong sanctions if the talks failed.

The lawmakers, who included House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman (D-California), wrote that “engagement must be serious and credible, but it cannot be open-ended.”

“We cannot allow Iran to use diplomatic discussions as a cover for continuing to work on its nuclear program. Iran must verifiably suspend its uranium enrichment program within at most a few months of the initiation of discussions,” the letter stressed.

Berman, in an interview with The Jerusalem Post in December, said the negotiations with the Iranians should last somewhere between eight to 12 weeks.

But US State Department officials are refusing to put a deadline on US attempts to negotiate, with one official telling the Post simply that “we are pursuing direct diplomacy at the moment.”

The official added that “it remains a two-track approach,” with sanctions being the second track, but that “we are focused on the engagement track for now.”

Iran experts have said that the US administration is looking to seize the initiative and make sure that its efforts at engagement are seen as sincere not just by the Iranians, but also

by the Europeans.

Since taking office, Obama has advocated talking to Iran and has stressed America’s willingness to engage Teheran across a range of issues. In March he took the unprecedented step of videotaping a greeting for the Iranian New Year in which he pointedly spoke to “Iran’s leaders” about the US being “committed to diplomacy” and “engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect.”

The idea, analysts say, is that not only do such overtures present the maximum chance of encouraging Iran to sit down to serious negotiations, but also to win over Europeans and other members of the international community to the possibility of tougher action in the future. According to this logic, the Obama administration will be able to say that it made a serious effort at engagement, taking

the initiative in reaching out to Teheran, and thereby paint the Islamic republic as the intransigent, confrontational party if it rejected the outstretched hand.

From this perspective, setting out in public a timeline for negotiations could limit the US administration’s payoff: It could be seen as implying that Washington isn’t serious about engagement, but only using it as a bargaining tactic, undercutting the amount of international support it would be able to gain through these outreach efforts. At worst, it could be interpreted as succumbing to Israeli demands that it only engage within a strict timeframe, regardless of US assessments that it has more time to try diplomacy than Jerusalem believes.

When asked about the United States’ emerging Iran policy at a press briefing Monday, State Department acting spokesman Robert Wood stressed that the US was willing to meet with Iranian officials without the preconditions that the Bush administration had demanded.

“It’s important to remind everyone that we are willing to engage Iran without preconditions. And we’ll just see whether Iran is willing to take up that offer,” Wood said, noting that there were aspects of the policy that were still being reviewed and that other types of meetings and efforts at engagement would likely be announced in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Iran’s state television reported Monday that the country’s top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, welcomed nuclear negotiations with the US and other countries, saying in a telephone conversation with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana that the talks should be aimed at “constructive cooperation” between countries.

Last week, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Teheran was open to talks – but only if they were based on respect for Iran’s rights, suggesting the West should not try to force Teheran to stop uranium enrichment. Jalili’s comments appeared to be more of a definitive answer, but he stressed that Iran would issue an official response to the invitation soon, the TV reported. He did no t elabora

The US announced last week that it would join direct talks with Iran that Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia were seeking to convene.

Ahmadinejad said Thursday that Teheran would present a new proposal for negotiations, saying “conditions have changed” – an apparent reference to Obama’s election and Iran’s own progress in its nuclear program since previous talks were held last year. He didn’t elaborate on the proposal.

Ahmadinejad announced on Saturday that Iran now controlled the entire cycle for producing nuclear fuel. But US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton voiced skepticism last week about Iran’s new claims that it had made major progress in its nuclear program and tested more advanced equipment for enriching uranium.

“We don’t know what to believe about the Iranian program. We’ve heard many different assessments and claims over a number of years,” she said.

A new archeological discovery in the Jordan River valley at Gilgal, where Israel crossed the Jordan River under Joshua, is very interesting, and is quite appropriate at this time, especially since Israel is under great international pressure to give back the West Bank.

“[Researchers from the University of Haifa today revealed an exceptional archaeological discovery of “foot-shaped” enclosures for assemblies and rituals in the Jordan Valley, dating back to the time when the Jews first settled Israel.

The enclosures are significant because this is the first time that enclosed sites identified with the biblical sites termed in Hebrew “gilgal” – closed spaces used to assemble people perhaps for battle or worship – have been revealed in the Jordan Valley. To this day, no archaeological site has been proposed to be identified with the gilgal.

Gilgal is mentioned 39 times in the Bible, most notably in the Book of Joshua as the site where the Israelites first encamped after crossing the Jordan River. Joshua ordered the Children of Israel to take 12 stones, symbolizing the 12 tribes, and place them in formation. According to the Bible, a mass circumcision for the Israelite males was also held there.

Yesterday it was revealed that the researchers, headed by Prof. Adam Zertal, had found and excavated five structures, each in the shape of an enormous human foot, apparently to mark territorial ownership.]”

Micah 5:5,6 – And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men. [6] And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.

I have established, in previous updates, that “this man” of verse 5 is “the peace” himself because he ends the earthly reign of “the Assyrian” at the battle of Armageddon, and then brings in “the peace” that lasts for 1000 years on this present planet. It is only Jesus Christ himself who has the power to bring such a thing to pass.

I believe verse 6 to be one of the most interesting verses in

the Scriptures that have yet to be fulfilled. Why am I so certain it has never been fulfilled? Because Israel has not wasted the land of Assyria with the sword, or the land of Nimrod in its entrances thereof, since Micah wrote these prophecies! At the time he wrote the borders of the expanding Assyrian Empire covered all of modern day Israel north of Ramallah, all of modern Syria, all of modern Lebanon, and all of modern Iraq north of Baghdad. The historical settling of this area between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers after the flood in Noah’s day is of great value in the interpretation of Micah 5:6.

Genesis 10:1,6,8,22 – Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. [6] And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. [8] And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. [22] The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram.

Assyria apparently derived its name from Asshur, the son of Shem. Later in time Asshur was worshipped as the chief God of the Assyrians.

Asshur went into the northern area of the fertile plain lying between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, and his descendants that settled it were eventually called Assyrians. It is certain that Israel never wasted this area. Nimrod was the grandson of Ham through Cush. He founded a great kingdom between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, south of the area of Asshur’s descendants, that extended south to the Persian Gulf. The “entrances” into it from the east, which is the direction the Israelis would come to “waste” it, were the shallow sections of the Euphrates River that could be waded to gain entrance. The Euphrates was, and is, perhaps the greatest carrier of top water silt on this planet. The rapid descent gradient of its waters in the steep mountains of Turkey was able to sustain an enormous quantity of erosion debris cut off the mountain slopes, but when the water came onto the flat plains of modern day Iraq its speed was abruptly lowered, and the silt deposition rapidly built up lees across the Euphrates, making it possible for some areas to be waded. The long series of dams currently stretching from Turkey, through Syria, and into Iraq have helped to regulate the flow and silt deposition of the Euphrates, but at the time of Micah’s writings there would have been a plurality of wading entrances into the land of Nimrod across the Euphrates.

Now, why have I gone into such detail as to the locations of Assyria and the land of Nimrod? Because when Israel comes up out of the Negev at the battle of Armageddon, after having been confined there by the Assyrian for 1260 days, it will conquer a specified amount of territory to its north and east.

Revelation 12:6 – And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Malachi 4:1 – For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

Zechariah 12:6-9 – In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem. [9] And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

Zechariah 14:9 – And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.

Micah 5:6 – And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.

Israel will claim all the land from the River of Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea to the Euphrates River, with a northern latitudinal border extending to Hamath (Hama) in Syria, and a southern border extending to Kadesh in the Sinai. And all this is not by accident, but by design and promise, for it was God’s ancient land grant promise to Abraham and to Israel. Its periphery is laid out in Genesis and Ezekiel. Its northern limits were to extend to the latitude of Hamath (Hama) in Syria, and its southern limits to the latitude of Kadesh. Its longitudinal limits to the west were to extend to the Mediterranean Sea and the River of Egypt, and its eastern longitudinal limits were to extend to the “entrances thereof” of the Euphrates River. This is the area of Micah 5:6 that Israel will “waste,” and then claim for a thousand years.

Genesis 15:18 – In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

Ezekiel 47:17,19 – And the border from the sea shall be Hazar-enan, the border of Damascus, and the north northward, and the border of Hamath. And this is the north side. [19] And the south side southward, from Tamar even to the waters of strife in Kadesh, the river to the great sea. And this is the south side southward.

After Christ has himself, by himself, defeated the Assyrian at the battle of Armageddon to bring in “the peace” of a thousand years, then Israel will roar north out of the Negev to mop up what is left of a demoralized army that is fleeing north. Israel will take Jerusalem back, then drive north, northeast, and east to claim all the land west of the Euphrates River.

Isaiah 66:15,16 – For, behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. [16] For by fire and by his sword will the Lord plead with all flesh: and the slain of the Lord shall be many.

Zechariah 14:12-14 – And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. [13] And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the Lord shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour. Ancient Foot Provides Insight to Israelite Pilgrimages

(IsraelNN.com) As the modern Israeli family readies itself for the annual Passover Seder on Wednesday, a new archeological discovery sheds light on how ancient the tradition actually is.

Researchers from the University of Haifa today revealed an exceptional archaeological discovery of “foot-shaped” enclosures for assemblies and rituals in the Jordan Valley, dating back to the time when the Jews first settled Israel.

The enclosures are significant because this is the first time that enclosed sites identified with the biblical sites termed in Hebrew “gilgal” – closed spaces used to assemble people perhaps for battle or worship – have been revealed in the Jordan Valley. To this day, no archaeological site has been proposed to be identified with the gilgal.

Gilgal is mentioned 39 times in the Bible, most notably in the Book of Joshua as the site where the Israelites first encamped after crossing the Jordan River. Joshua ordered the Children of Israel to take 12 stones, symbolizing the 12 tribes, and place them in formation. According to the Bible, a mass circumcision for the Israelite males was also held there.

Yesterday it was revealed that the researchers, headed by Prof. Adam Zertal, had found and excavated five structures, each in the shape of an enormous human foot, apparently to mark territorial ownership.

Created for human assembly

The stone enclosures were located in the Jordan valley and the hill country west of it.

The date for the sites was established as the outset of the Iron Age I (the 13th-12th centuries BCE). Based on their size and shape, the researchers say, it is clear that they were used for human assembly and not for animals.

Two of the sites (in Bedhat esh-Sha’ab and Yafit 3) were excavated between 2002 and 2005. The findings, mostly of clay vessels and animal bones, date their foundation to the end of the 13th century BCE, and one of them endured undisturbed up to the 9th or 8th century BCE.

In at least two cases, paved circuits, some two meters wide, were found around the structures. The archeologists theorize that these were probably used to encircle the sites in a ceremony.

“Ceremonial encirclement of an area in procession is an important element in the ancient Near East,” Zertal said, adding that the origins of the Hebrew term hag (festival) in Semitic languages comes from the verb “hug”, which means “encircle”. The discovery can therefore also shed new light on the religious processions and the meaning of the Hebrew word for festival, hag.

But at this time of year, it is the word regel or “foot” which holds much significance. There are three major pilgrimage festivals in Judaism, known as the Shlosha Regalim: Pesach or Passover, Shavuot (The Festival of Weeks), and Sukkot (The Feast of Tabernacles).

At these times, in ancient Israel, Jews would make a pilgrimage to make sacrifices and worship at the Temple in Jerusalem. Therefore, “regel” also came to mean “festival” or “holiday” in Hebrew.

A symbol of ownership

And there may be even deeper meanings, Zertal said at a press conference yesterday, emphasizing that in the ancient world, “foot” also held significance as a symbol of ownership of territory, control over an enemy, connection between people and land, and presence of the Deity.

“The ‘foot’ structures that we found in the Jordan valley are the first sites that the People of Israel built upon entering Canaan and they testify to the biblical concept of ownership of the land with the foot,” said Zertal.

“The discovery of these ‘foot’ structures opens an entirely new system of linguistic and historical perceptions,” Zertal said, adding that the source of the Hebrew term aliya la-regel (or pilgrimage), literally translated as “ascending to the foot” could be attributed to the “foot” sites in the Jordan valley.

According to Zertal, the “foot” constructions were used for ceremonial assemblies during Iron Age I and probably afterwards. When the religious center for Jews moved to Jerusalem the command of aliya la-regel became associated with Jerusalem. However, says Zertal, the source of the term is in the sites discovered in the Jordan valley and the altar on Mt.

Ebal.

“Now, following these discoveries, the meanings of the terms become clear. Identifying the ‘foot’ enclosures as ancient Israeli ceremonial sites leads us to a series of new possibilities to explain the beginnings of Israel, of the People of Israel’s festivals and holidays,” he stated.

Hizbullah terror cells uncovered in Egypt masterminded by Iranians

The hands that were sent to establish the terror cells in Egypt and run the smuggling network bringing arms and money into Gaza indeed belong to senior Hizbullah activists, yet the brain that came up with the plan to arm Hamas and undermine President Mubarak’s regime is in Tehran.

And so, for example, two of the suspects arrested in Egypt in connection with the Hizbullah terror cells work for an Iranian TV channel that broadcasted from Cairo and whose offices were used as a site for secret meetings and the transfer of funds and orders to the members of the Hizbullah cell in Egypt.

Cairo and Tehran have experienced plenty of friction ever since the Shah’s regime was toppled in 1979, marking the rise of the Ayatollahs’ “proper Islam.” Egypt’s embassy in Cairo was closed down, and meanwhile the Iranians named a major street and a square on the outskirts of Tehran after Khalid Islambouli, President Sadat’s killer.

Over the years, terror cells dispatched by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in order to kill Egyptian leaders were detained by Cairo. Four years ago, the Egyptian ambassador to Baghdad was killed, and his body had not been returned to this day.

Egyptian officials also warn that Qatar has fallen into the Iranian trap, and that al-Jazeera has become the axis of evil’s mouthpiece.

If Iran’s nuclear race is Israel’s nightmare, the Arab world’s nightmare is the “great plan” being formulated by the Iranians: A plan that is meant to “creep” into the territory of Arab states, deploy a network of sleeper terror cells within them, recruit terror activists, shower opposition movements with money, and then carry out a series of attacks, assassinations, artificial protests, and violent clashes with security forces and police.

Jordan’s King Abdullah openly shared his fears of “the Iranian crescent” when he warned against the Iranian plan to send its long arms into Lebanon, take over focal points of power in Iraq, and use Sudan as a base for deploying thousands of terrorists in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Unanswered question

It was no coincidence that Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit announced: “We knew about the Israeli Air Force’s bombings in Sudan in real time.” We can guess that Egyptian intelligence services monitor Sudan because of the Iranian arms that settled there uninterruptedly and established training bases there.

In one moment, Iranian intelligence agents can block the Nile’s water sources, Egypt’s lifeblood, send in al-Qaeda-style murderers, and smuggle weapons and explosives not only to Gaza’s tunnels but also to Cairo and to the Alexandria Port.

In his late-night speech the other night, Hizbullah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah did not even try to deny the depth of the ties and commitment to Tehran. I wish that our excellent ties with Iran were appreciated by the leaders of states cooperating with the Zionist enemy, he said.

Nasrallah also did not try to shirk responsibility for the arms smuggling. He just didn’t provide the answer for the obvious question: Who is sending, via Hizbullah, hundreds of millions of dollars to finance terror, and where did the attack plans and arms received by the network activists in Egypt come from?

Analysis: Hizbullah shows its true colors to the Arab world

Many Egyptians can’t bring themselves to believe that Hizbullah was running agents and planning terror attacks in their country. Most Arab countries couldn’t believe it, either, though they have offered no reaction. They are still trying to come to terms with the new situation.

But last week’s news should not have surprised them. Iran never made a secret of its plans to export its brand of Islamic revolution to the whole of the Middle East, bringing about the destruction of Israel in the process. Hamas and Hizbullah are the Teheran regime’s tools in working toward this goal.

Yet the very thought of having an Arab group set up terrorist network in the heart of Egypt is perceived by most of the Arab world as a violation of all that’s holy.

Commentators can pontificate all they want about the weakening of Egypt, but the land of the pharaohs is still the most important country in the Arab world. It is the largest in population and boasts an impressive history and an impressive culture. Its strategic position is matchless since it commands the Suez Canal and is located at the crossroads of Asia and Africa.

And last, but not least, it has the strongest Arab army in the Middle East.

Had Hizbullah’s subversive activities succeeded, that army might have been called in to take over. What would have happened to the region and to the peace process is anybody’s guess.

We are not talking this time of a few Beduin being bribed to launch terror attacks against Israeli tourists: the target was Egypt itself.

According to official Egyptian declarations, a Hizbullah agent named Mohamed Yousuf Sami Shehab recruited around 50 young men – Lebanese, Syrian, Sudanese and Palestinians, and 12 Egyptian Shi’ites.

The foreigners entered Egypt with fake passports. When they were arrested $2 million were found in their possession, along with several cars, and explosives ready to be detonated.

They were busy setting up a terror infrastructure throughout the country, including in Upper Egypt, purchasing an apartment building in Aguza, one of the choicest locations in Cairo, and renting dozens of villas and shops in Sinai – in Dahab, Nueiba and Rafah.

In the city of Suez, they rented villas overlooking the canal in order to monitor the shipping traffic – apparently plotting to attack American and Israeli vessels.

US warships bringing supplies and reinforcements to Kuwait, Qatar, Iraq and Afghanistan go through the canal on their way to the Persian Gulf.

Hizbullah may even have considered sinking a ship to close down the Suez Canal, which would have forced all maritime traffic from the West to the Persian Gulf and Asia to sail thousands of additional kilometers, via the Cape of Good Hope.

According to official sources in Egypt, Hizbullah intended to launch a massive series of terror attacks. Though American and Israeli targets were to be hit first, the aim was

to destabilize the country and provoke huge demonstrations that could bring down the regime and lead to a military coup.

Hizbullah chief Hassan Nasrallah gave himself away when he admitted in his speech on Friday that Sami Shehab was a member of his organization and that he had been sent to Egypt to deliver “logistic assistance” to Hamas in Gaza.

At the same time he launched a virulent attack on Egypt, lambasting it for blockading Gaza and dismantling the smuggling tunnels. His words were tantamount to a declaration of war against Egypt.

Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif declared that there could be no compromise on the safety of his country; President Hosni Mubarak and Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit have so far refrained from comment, leaving the field to a number of unnamed sources who attacked Nasrallah vigorously.

One has to keep in mind that Egypt is at the forefront of pragmatic Arab countries fighting against Iranian subversive activities in the region.

During the Second Lebanon War in the summer of 2006, Cairo was virulently attacked by Syrian, Iranian and Hizbullah media on the grounds of its alleged support for Israel, much as it was this year, during Operation Cast Lead.

It is well known that the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel is to Iran as a red flag to a bull. The treaty is seen as a major stumbling block in the path of the Islamic revolution launched by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1979 – and Teheran cut off diplomatic ties with Egypt after the

treaty was signed.

Recent efforts by Iran to renew these ties failed, because Teheran refused to remove the name of Anwar Sadat’s assassin from a major street in the Iranian capital.

But it has been suggested that this demand was nothing but a pretext: Mubarak, who is well aware of Iran’s intentions, is in no hurry to renew relations.

Iran’s reaction was to step up its subversive activities in the region and especially against Egypt.

Another, dangerous aspect of that battle is the determination of more and more Arab countries to have nuclear programs of their own to counterbalance Teheran’s efforts. Egypt is in the final planning stage of four nuclear plants to produce electricity.

A year ago Mubarak spoke publicly against efforts being made to promote Shi’ite Islam and accused Shi’ites of being more faithful to Iran than to their own country.

In this fight Egypt finds itself allied with Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Morocco against Iran and its allies – Syria, Sudan, Hizbullah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad and lesser organizations.

It is through Hizbullah that Iran is most active. Agents and instructors from that organization are at work in Iraq, where they train pro-Iranian militias; in Yemen, where they support the Houthiin, a Shi’ite extremist movement, in rebellion against the government; and in Bahrain, where they help Shi’ite opposition forces.

It is quite likely that we are now seeing only part of their vast subversive endeavor.

In the past few weeks, the confrontation between the pragmatic Arab camp and Iran and its proxies surfaced openly. An Iranian official declared that Bahrain was an Iranian province, angering all Arab countries.

Mubarak flew immediately to Bahrain’s capital, Manana, to affirm that Bahrain was and will remain Arab.

A few days later, Sunni Morocco off broke diplomatic relation with Iran because of the activities of Shi’ite preachers on Iran’s payroll.

To show his displeasure with the situation, Mubarak did not attend the yearly Arab summit that took place in Doha, Qatar’s capital, at end of March.

His representative launched a scathing attack on Iran without expressly naming it and said that Arabs should not let non-Arab elements interfere in their internal affairs; he went on to accuse Al-Jazeera of inciting the Arab masses to revolt against their governments – a dig at the emir of Qatar, who owns the popular station and who has lately joined the Iranian camp.

Setting up the Hizbullah network is the Iranian answer.

It comes at a crucial time for Egypt, where nobody knows what will happen when Mubarak departs the scene, and where the Muslim Brotherhood is gaining strength.

Some people suggest that the feud between Egypt and Iran will benefit Israel, but this is far from the truth. Israel needs a strong and stable Egypt.

Meanwhile, there is a new player on the scene.

US President Barack Obama has started a dialogue with Syria and is about to begin one with Iran.

Egypt and the pragmatic camp are not too happy about that development, though they will not admit it publicly; they would rather see Israel and the US bomb Iran and do away with the Iranian threat, since they know very well it will not be removed by diplomacy.

The raison d’etre of the ayatollahs’ regime is to promote an Islamic revolution, and the only way to stop it by using force.

Peres: Iran aspires to ‘control Mideast’

President Shimon Peres responded to the developing row between Egypt and Hizbullah on Monday morning, saying, “Sooner or later the world will realize that Iran has aspirations to control the Middle East, and that it’s Teheran which has colonialist ambitions.”

Speaking after meeting with the country’s top rabbis in honor of the Pessah holiday, Peres told Army Radio, “They fight even without us being involved, and that’s good.”

The president’s comments came as the first official Israeli response after Cairo announced that a Hizbullah-linked cell was plotting to attack Egyptian institutions and Israeli tourists on the Sinai Peninsula.

Peres went on to call Hizbullah “an Iranian agent,” and called its chief, Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, “a man who wraps himself in sheikh’s robes, yet is willing to kill.”

“Soon, the world will realize,” he repeated.

Throughout Monday morning, Peres, accompanied by Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin, met with Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, Sephardi Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar, and Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger.

The president traditionally visits the religious leaders twice a year, on Pessah and Succot.

Also Monday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas telephoned Peres to wish him a happy Passover, and to express his willingness to continue with the peace process, Israel Radio reported.

Peres reportedly told the PA president not to “give up hope.”

Column One: Surviving in a post-American world

Like it or not, the United States of America is no longer the world’s policeman. This was the message of Barack Obama’s presidential journey to Britain, France, the Czech Republic, Turkey and Iraq this past week.

Somewhere between apologizing for American history – both distant and recent; genuflecting before the unelected, bigoted king of Saudi Arabia; announcing that he will slash the US’s nuclear arsenal, scrap much of America’s missile defense programs and emasculate the US Navy; leaving Japan to face North Korea and China alone; telling the Czechs, Poles and their fellow former Soviet colonies,
“Don’t worry, be happy,” as he leaves them to Moscow’s tender mercies; humiliating Iraq’s leaders while kowtowing to Iran; preparing for an open confrontation with Israel; and thanking Islam for its great contribution to American history, President Obama made clear to the world’s aggressors that America will not be confronting them for the foreseeable future.

Whether they are aggressors like Russia, proliferators like North Korea, terror exporters like nuclear-armed Pakistan or would-be genocidal-terror-supporting nuclear states like Iran, today, under the new administration, none of them has any reason to fear Washington.

This news is music to the ears of the American Left and their friends in Europe. Obama’s supporters like billionaire George Soros couldn’t be more excited at the self-induced demise of the American superpower. CNN’s former (anti-)Israel bureau chief Walter Rodgers wrote ecstatically in the Christian Science Monitor on Wednesday, “America’s… superpower status, is being downgraded as rapidly as its economy.”

The pro-Obama US and European media are so pleased with America’s abdication of power that they took the rare step of applauding Obama at his press conference in London. Indeed, the media’s enthusiasm for Obama appeared to grow with each presidential statement of contrition for America’s past uses of force, each savage attack he leveled against his predecessor George W. Bush, each swipe he took at Israel, and each statement of gratitude for the blessings of Islam he uttered.

But while the media couldn’t get enough of the new US leader, America’s most stable allies worldwide began a desperate search for a reset button that would cause the administration to take back its abandonment of America’s role as the protector of the free world.

Tokyo was distraught by the administration’s reaction to North Korea’s three-stage ballistic missile test. Japan recognized the betrayal inherent in Defense Secretary Robert Gates’s announcement ahead Pyongyang’s newest provocation that the US would only shoot the missile down if it targeted US territory. In one sentence, uttered not in secret consultations, but declared to the world on CNN, Gates abrogated America’s strategic commitment to Japan’s defense.

India, for its part, is concerned by Obama’s repeated assertions that its refusal to transfer control over the disputed Jammu and Kashmir provinces to Pakistan inspires Pakistani terror against India. It is equally distressed at the Obama administration’s refusal to make ending Pakistan’s support for jihadist terror groups attacking India a central component of its strategy for contending with Pakistan and Afghanistan. In general, Indian officials have expressed deep concern over the Obama administration’s apparent lack of regard for India as an ally and a significant strategic counterweight to China.

Then there is Iraq. During his brief visit to Baghdad on Tuesday afternoon, Obama didn’t even pretend that he would ensure that Iraqi democracy and freedom is secured before US forces are withdrawn next year. The most supportive statement he could muster came during his conversation with Turkish students in Istanbul earlier in the day. There he said, “I have a responsibility to make sure that as we bring troops out, that we do so in a careful enough way that we don’t see a complete collapse into violence.”

Hearing Obama’s statements, and watching him and his advisers make daily declarations of friendship to Iran’s mullahs, Iraqi leaders are considering their options for surviving the rapidly approaching storm.

Then there is Europe.

Although Obama received enthusiastic applause from his audience in Prague when he announced his intention to destroy the US’s nuclear arsenal, drastically scale back its missile defense programs and forge a new alliance with Russia, his words were anything but music to the ears of the leaders of former Soviet satellites threatened by Russia.

The Czech, Polish, Georgian and Ukrainian governments were quick to recognize that Obama’s strong desire to curry favor with the Kremlin and weaken his own country will imperil their ability to withstand Russian aggression.

It is not a coincidence, for instance, that the day Obama returned to Washington, Georgia’s Moscow-sponsored opposition announced its plan to launch massive protests in Tblisi to force the ouster of pro-Western, anti-Russian Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili.

And as for Russia, like Iran, which responded to Obama’s latest ode to the mullahs by opening a nuclear fuel plant and announcing it has 7,000 advanced centrifuges in operation, so Moscow reacted to Obama’s fig leaf with a machine gun, announcing its refusal to support sanctions against North Korea and repeating its false claim that Iran’s nuclear program is nonaggressive.

Finally there is Israel. If Obama’s assertions that Israel must support the immediate establishment of a Palestinian state, his declarations of support for the so-called Saudi “peace plan,” which requires Israel to commit national suicide in exchange for “peace” with the Arab world, and his continuous and increasingly frantic appeals for Iran to “engage” his administration weren’t enough to show Israel that Obama is sacrificing the US’s alliance with the Jewish state in a bid to appease the Arabs and Iran, on Tuesday Vice President Joseph Biden made this policy explicit.

When Biden told CNN that Israel would be “ill-advised” to attack Iran’s nuclear installations, he made clear that from the administration’s perspective, an Israeli strike that prevents Iran from becoming a nuclear power is less acceptable than a nuclear-armed Iran.

That is, the Obama administration prefers to see Iran become a nuclear power than to see Israel secure its very existence.

AMERICA’S BETRAYAL of its democratic allies makes each of them more vulnerable to aggression at the hands of their enemies – enemies the Obama administration is now actively attempting to appease. And as the US strengthens their adversaries at their expense, these spurned democracies must consider their options for surviving as free societies in this new, threatening, post-American environment.

For the most part, America’s scorned allies lack the ability to defeat their enemies on their own. India cannot easily defeat nuclear-armed Pakistan, which itself is fragmenting into disparate anti-Indian nuclear-wielding Islamist and Islamist-supporting factions.

Japan today cannot face North Korea – which acts as a Chinese proxy – on its own without risking a confrontation with China. Russia’s invasion of Georgia last August showed clearly that its former republics and satellites have no way of escaping Moscow’s grip alone. This week’s Arab League conference at Doha demonstrated to Iraq’s leaders that their Arab brethren are incapable and unwilling to confront Iran.

And the Obama administration’s intense efforts to woo Iran coupled with its plan to slash the US’s missile defense programs – including those in which Israel participates – and reportedly pressure Israel to dismantle its own purported nuclear arsenal – make clear that Israel today stands alone against Iran.

THE RISKS that the newly inaugurated post-American world poses for America’s threatened friends are clear. But viable opportunities for survival do exist, and Israel can and must play a central role in developing them. Specifically, Israel must move swiftly to develop active strategic alliances with Japan, Iraq, Poland, and the Czech Republic and it must expand its alliance with India.

With Israel’s technological capabilities, its intelligence and military expertise, it can play a vital role in shoring up these countries’ capacities to contain the rogue states that threaten them. And by containing the likes of Russia, North Korea and Pakistan, they will make it easier for Israel to contain Iran even in the face of US support for the mullahs.

The possibilities for strategic cooperation between and among all of these states and Israel run the gamut from intelligence sharing to military training, to missile defense, naval development, satellite collaboration, to nuclear cooperation. In addition, of course, expanded economic ties between and among these states can aid each of them in the struggle to stay afloat during the current global economic crisis.

Although far from risk free, these opportunities are realistic because they are founded on stable, shared interests. This is the case despite the fact that none of these potential alliances will likely amount to increased support for Israel in international forums. Dependent as they are on Arab oil, these potential allies cannot be expected to vote with Israel in the UN General Assembly. But this should not concern Jerusalem.

The only thing that should concern Jerusalem today is how to weaken Iran both directly by attacking its nuclear installations, and indirectly by weakening its international partners in Moscow, Pyongyang, Islamabad and beyond in the absence of US support. If Japan is able to contain North Korea and so limit Pyongyang’s freedom to proliferate its nuclear weapons and missiles to Iran and Syria and beyond, Israel is better off. So, too, Israel is better off if Russia is contained by democratic governments in Eastern and Central Europe. These nations in turn are better off if Iran is contained and prevented from threatening them both directly and indirectly through its strategic partners in North Korea, Syria and Russia, and its terror affiliates in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

For the past 16 years, successive Israeli governments have wrongly believed that politics trump strategic interests. The notion that informed Israel’s decision-makers – not unlike the notion that now informs the Obama administration – was that Israel’s strategic interests would be secured as a consequence of its efforts to appease its enemies by weakening itself. Appreciative of Israel’s sacrifices for peace, the nations of the world – and particularly the US, the Arabs and Europe – would come to Israel’s defense in its hour of need. Now that the hour of need has arrived, Israel’s political strategy for securing itself has been exposed as a complete fiasco.

The good news is that no doubt sooner rather than later, Obama’s similarly disastrous bid to denude the US of its military power under the naive assumption that it will be able to use its new stature as a morally pure strategic weakling to win its enemies over to its side will fail spectacularly and America’s foreign policy will revert to strategic rationality.

But to survive the current period of American strategic madness, Israel and the US’s other unwanted allies must build alliances with one another – covertly if need be – to contain their adversaries in the absence of America. If they do so successfully, then the damage to global security induced by Obama’s emasculation of his country will be limited. If on the other hand, they fail, then America’s eventual return to its senses will likely come too late for its allies – if not for America itself.

Barak’s Office: Israel ‘Closely Watching’ Iran

(IsraelNN.com) Israel is “closely watching” the Islamic Republic’s progress on nuclear development, according to a statement issued Thursday night by Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s office.

“The defense establishment is closely watching the nuclear developments in Iran,” said the statement.

“The inauguration of the new plant proves and strengthens the international need to monitor the Iranian nuclear project.”

Earlier in the day, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad inaugurated a nuclear plant that is set to produce uranium oxide fuel pellets for the planned heavy-water nuclear reactor in Isfahan.

Israel and Western nations, including the United States, have become increasingly concerned at

the likelihood that Iran may use the spent fuel from the heavy-water reactor to produce an atomic weapon.

A recent report by the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the agency has discovered 460 more pounds of low-enriched uranium than Iran had disclosed.

The agency also reported that Iran is using approximately 4,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium at its Natanz facility, with another 1,600 “in the wings.” That compares with the November report of 3,800 functioning centrifuges.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Cl inton was not perturbed over the announcement that a new nuclear plant was set to beg

in producing fuel in the Islamic Republic.

“We do not attribute any particular meaning, with respect to the range of issues that we are looking to address with the Iranians, from this particular statement,” she said. “We don’t know what to believe about the Iranian program. We’ve heard many different assessments and claims over a number of years.”

U.S. to Participate in UN Council Talks with Iran

The United States has announced that it will participate in proposed group talks between the permanent members of the

United Nations Security Council, plus Germany, and Iran.

State Department spokesman Robert Wood said “the U.S. will join P5+1 discussions with Iran from now on.” The P5+1 refers to representatives from Britain, China, France, Russia and the U.S. plus one other country.

“We believe that pursuing very careful engagement on a range of issues that affect our interests and the interests of the world with Iran makes sense. There is nothing more important than trying to convince Iran to cease its efforts to obtain a nuclear weapon,” said Clinton.

It was not clear how Iran would respond to the proposal, however. “We will review it and then decide about it,” said Iranian official Ali Akbar Javanfekr, according to the Reuters news agency.

“The Iranian nation has always been for talks,” said Ahmadinejad at Thursday’s opening ceremony, but qualified the statement by saying negotiations must “be based on justice and respecting rights.”
