I much prefer to await the Second Coming of Christ as the only one who can change it and, even after 1000 years under His reign, it will again rebel against His System of government. At the end of the thousand years we will finally live on a new earth with a government over carnal men made perfect by the Spirit of God. What a relief that will be!

Harris, the Senior Pastor of Second Baptist Church and professor of Pastoral Theology at the School of Theology at Virginia Union University (both in Richmond, Virginia, in his book, “Preaching Liberation,” in the following quote, defines Black Liberation preaching as the prophetic instrument that restructures society.

“Liberation preaching encourages blacks and the poor to participate in the system, to get an education, to get involved in the political process and to do those things that will gradually help to change and transform society.”

That quote is a perfect description of President Barack Hussein Obama. I believe it describes his life and purpose. But I simply do not agree with the way he is going about it. It simply won’t work, and America and Israel are going to suffer as he goes about doing it. No one is going to be able to change and transform this society except Jesus.

The new US president’s dramatic global policy steps have easily dwarfed the knotty Israeli-Palestinian peace issue handed down from one US president to the next over decades. Barack Obama’s outstretched hand to Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez,

Iran’s best friend in the Americas, on April 17, at the summit of American leaders in Port of Prince, made the talk surrounding Special Middle East Envoy George Mitchell’s mission to Jerusalem and Ramallah this week sound eerily like voices from the past.

After talking to Mitchell, Israel’s prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu and defense minister Ehud Barak tried the usual bromides: They protested that Jerusalem’s ties with Washington and Jerusalem were as strong as ever

and they would work together toward an agreed solution for the Palestinian problem.

But those words were lost in the black Iranian cloud hanging over the relations.

Barack Obama has set his sights and heart on friendship with the rulers of the Islamic Republic of Iran and their radical allies.

The name and policies of the occupant of the prime minister’s office in Jerusalem do not matter – any more than Tehran’s determination to complete its nuclear weapons program in defiance of the world, or even its first A-bomb test in a year or two, for which intelligence sources report Tehran is already getting set.

Obama’s Washington believes America can live with a nuclear-armed Iran – a decision probably taken first under the Bush presidency.

But Israel cannot, and may have no option but to part ways with the Obama administration on this point. As a nuclear power, Iran will be able to bend Jerusalem to the will of its enemies, make it unconditionally give Syria the Golan plus extra pieces of territory, tamely accept a Hamas-dominated Palestinian West Bank louring over its heartland and let the Lebanese Hizballah terrorize Galilee in the north at will. All three would make hay under Iran’s nuclear shield, while Tehran lords it over the region in the role of regional power conferred by Obama’s grace and favor.

In no time, Israel would be stripped of most of its defenses.

Israel is not the only nervous country in the region. But Hosni Mubarak of Egypt is the only Middle East leader brave enough to stick his neck out, albeit with Saudi backing, and stand up to the Iranian peril, direct and through Hizballah.

He has also outspokenly criticized Washington’s courtship of the revolutionary Islamic republic.

Cairo’s Al Ahram Saturday, April 18, accused Iran, Syria, Qatar, Hizballah, Hamas, al Jazeera TV of a conspiracy to overthrow Egyptian government.

But the US president is not daunted by the radicalism or enmity of his new friends or the loss of old ones. At the Summit of All Americas, Obama greeted Hugo Chavez 24 hours after the Venezuelan ruler said: “The United States Empire is on its way down and will be finished in the near future, inshallah!”

Using the Muslim blessing to underline the wish for America’s downfall was no bar to the smile and handshake; neither was Venezuela’s recent severance of its ties with Israel for no provocation or its willingness to host a delegation of Hizballah (internationally branded a terrorist organization) in Caracas.

What is relevant to Obama is Hugo Chavez’s role as co-architect of the joint Russian-Iranian campaign to displace American influence in the southern hemisphere. The US president has opted for winning America’s enemies over with smiles and embraces rather than punishing them like George W.

Bush.

Obama continues to woo Bashar Assad apace despite his blunt refusal to loosen his strategic ties with Tehran or stop supporting the Lebanese Shiite group [with arms] because Hizballah is dedicated to fighting Israel, – as he is quoted as saying in the pro-Hizballah Lebanese publication al Akhbar on April 17.

For the first time in years, the administration this week sent a high-ranking delegation to Syria’s independence day celebrations at Washington’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel, headed by Jeffrey Feltman, former ambassador and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs.

The thaw in relations has gone so far that some Washington wags are calling Assad’s capital “Syria on the Potomac.”

The American storm besetting the Middle East leaves Israel’s most vital interests way behind.

The condition Netanyahu put before Mitchell for progress in peacemaking – that Israel be recognized as a Jewish state, which was instantly rejected by Palestinian Authority leaders – aroused scant attention in Washington or anywhere else.

As Netanyahu will find when he meets Obama in Washington early next month, Israel is no longer a prime factor in US global policy, because America has fundamentally reshuffled its Middle East allegiances and alliances.

Even Tzipi Livni at the helm in Jerusalem would not divert Obama from his détente with Ahmadinejad, Assad and Chavez.

To gain points with his new friends, Obama’s White House is not above nudging Israel to please them. This week, his chief of staff Rahm Emanuel told Jewish leaders whom he met in Washington that if Israel wants America’s help for thwarting Iran’s nuclear program, it must first start evacuating West Bank settlements.

This was of course cynical claptrap.

Even if every single settlement were to be removed and Israel lined up with Obama’s quest for a Palestinian state alongside Israel, the US president would not drop Tehran or help Israel strike Iran’s nuclear facilities. He has already ceded Tehran’s uranium enrichment program (and therefore its drive for nuclear arms), and would forcefully oppose any Israeli military action. US defense secretary Robert Gates indicated as much this week when he went to almost absurd lengths to play down the Iranian nuclear threat and Israel’s ability to handle it.

So what options are left to Israel at this juncture?

1. To bow under the Obama tempest until it blows over in keeping with the old proverb which says that trees bowing in the wind remain standing. This would entail going along with US acceptance of Iran as a nuclear power. The question is will Israel’s trees still be standing when the storm has passed and, if so, in what strategic environment?

2. To follow the example set by Likud’s first prime minister Menahem Begin in 1981. He stood up to Ronald Reagan’s fierce objections and sent the Israeli Air force to smash the Iraqi nuclear reactor before it was operational. Saddam Hussein never rebuilt the facility. By following in Begin’s footsteps before it is too late, Netanyahu would change the rules of the game regionally and globally.

(The London Times reported from Jerusalem Saturday that the Israeli military is preparing itself to launch a massive aerial assault on Iran’s nuclear facilities within days of being given the go-ahead by its new government. Two civil defense drills have been scheduled to prepare the population for missiles that could fall on any part of the country without warning.)

3. Israel could go for a more modest target, one of Iran’s faithful surrogates – Syria or Hizballah – to warn Washington that a larger operation is in store for their boss. If the Gaza offensive against Hamas last January was meant to send this message, it failed. Hamas is still the dominant Palestinian power and Barack Obama was not swayed from forging ahead with his policies of rapprochement with Iran and other radical world leaders.

Barak Obama has a lovely personality, and moreover, the holiday of freedom brings together the blacks and the Jews, who were among the greatest fighters for African-American equality. Still, we were hurt by Condoleezza Rice, who identified us with the white people who persecuted her during childhood, while viewing the Palestinians as the persecuted party.

Meanwhile, Obama’s rivals referred to him as “Hussein,” his middle name, in order to slam him. Yet in his recent visit to the Turkish parliament, his hosts happened to emphasize his “Hussein-ness,” and such things are coordinated with the guest. Obama, who has urged us to put ourselves in the shoes of the Palestinians, not only backs them; he also identifies with them.

We shall fee the difference soon. Barack Hussein Obama’s policy cornerstone is the establishment of “Palestine,” on the assumption this will extract the Americans from the mess in Iraq and Afghanistan, destroy the Taliban in Pakistan, and appease Iran.

Often when referring to cancer, people prefer to talk about “this disease, you know.” Around here we talk about “the price, you know,” in order not to go into detail about what shall be left here after Palestine is established. They speak cautiously, as one would address a patient before amputation.

Yet in the face of the razor-sharp ultimatum we can expect from Obama, enough with the hints: Imagine a border at Jerusalem’s Jaffa gate, with armed Palestinians standing on the Old City’s wall. Imagine a Dead Sea that is half in Jordan, and 50% of the remaining half belonging to Palestine.

Imagine a Negev divided into two near Kiryat Gat by a Palestinian bridge, and a Gazan demographic flood pouring into Jerusalem and the doorstep of our cities. Imagine Ben-Gurion covered by shoulder-held missiles deployed in the ruins of the Beit Aryeh settlement, thereby prompting us to move our international airport to the Negev.

Imagine Israel without the Jordan Rift Valley and without the Golan Heights.

300,000 new refugees

We shall have 300,000 new expelled citizens, with fears of a minor civil war, in addition to a “Return from Palestine” tax in order to finance homes and jobs for the Jewish refugees. Some of them will move into the apartments of Israelis who will leave the country once the terror and missile fire resume.

We shall have bars and their girls making a living off NATO troops, who shall be deployed here in a dual capacity: Serving as a security prosthesis for our amputated land, and defending the Arabs from us. Their deployment would symbolize the new status of Israel and Palestine as areas under the auspices and monitoring of the International Quartet, in line with the original goal of the Road Map – both of them shall be sovereign just like Kosovo is.

And so, the independence of our “third Temple” would turn out to be shorter than the independence of the Hasmoneans, who ruled between the bouts of Greek and Roman control, and many would choose to live in modern-day Rome – that is, America – instead of being occupied by it here.

An Israeli author, who lamented the rightist camp’s elections victory, comforted himself with the hope that Obama would force us to compromise. This author is not scared by the frightening outcome, only a small part of which was described above.

However, the vast majority of people in this nation are not deterred by the warning issued by the peace camp – that is: if we refuse to accommodate Obama, we shall lose his friendship. Because what kind of a friend is the one who shoves a shovel into your hand so you can dig your own grave?On the contrary: Golda, Rabin, and Begin were able to say “No!” to America, and the friendship was preserved.

THIS WAS THE PROPHECY ISSUED BY JESUS OF THE JEWISH PROBLEM THAT BEGAN IN 70 A.D., SOME 40 YEARS AFTER HE ISSSUED IT.

Luke 21:23,24 – But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. [24] And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN JESUS RETURNS AS MESSIAH TO SOLVE THE JEWISH PROBLEM.

Evian 1938 – Geneva 2009

It is less than three quarter of an hour by car from Geneva to its much smaller sister city Evian-les-Bains on the French side of Lake Geneva. What Evian lacks in size and political importance, it makes up in history and style. This rather sleepy, but healthy, town at the foot of the Alps can boast with one the grandest fin-de-siècle resort hotels of its kind as well as the bottled water which bears its name.

But Evian has a less friendly side which has left its mark in history. Simply Google “Evian” and you come up with a resort, a water and a conference which by some historians has been called “Hitler’s green light for genocide.” Last year marked the 70th anniversary of the Evian conference on the future of the Jewish refugees, but it was effectively forgotten as France at the time chaired the European Union.

As President Nicolas Sarkozy hosted the conference which was to launch a new era of cooperation around the Mediterranean Sea, the last thing France wanted to be reminded about was Evian 1938.

You cannot blame it. Evian goes down as one of the darkest chapters of modern European history when appeasement was the mode of the day and anyone who did not believe in “peace in our time” was simply disregarded as a warmonger.

It is not only the proximity between the two cities which is striking but also the zeitgeist of Evian 1938 and this year’s United Nations Conference against Racism. Whereas the original UN conference against racism in Durban in 2001 spiraled out of control with its obsession with the Judenfrage, there are no guarantees that this year will not be a repeat. Western governments have been paying lip service to their commitment to withdraw from anything that would resemble the hate fest in 2001, but words will be cheap when the commitment of the Western nations to stand true to our universal values is tested.

BACK TO EVIAN in 1938. As Hitler had annexed Austria and hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees were seeking a safe haven outside of the Nazi-controlled areas, the free world knew that something had to be done.

It was the US president Franklin Roosevelt who finally called together the conference with the objective of seeking a solution to the Jewish refugee problem. Thirty-two nations were invited to participate. It soon became clear that the conference was not going to solve anything, as one country after another explained that they all agreed that this was a major humanitarian problem which needed to be solved, but that their respective country could not do anything about it. Others were less diplomatically skilled.

“Our country is simply not big enough to receive any Jewish refugees,” said the Canadian representative.

When asked how many refugees Canada could receive the answer was, “One is too many.” “Australia has no racial problem and we are not desirous of importing one,” is a quote which today is on display in Yad Vashem in Jerusalem.

The list of obscenities does not stop there. A proposal to rescue the refugees by simply letting 10 countries receive 25,000 Jews each was flatly rejected. While these tragic decisions were made, which would ultimately have consequences for millions of Jews, some historians note that pleasure cruises on Lake Geneva were very popular among the delegates, as were tennis and golf in the fresh mountain air.

PERHAPS IT is again the allure of cosmopolitan Geneva and the same mountain climate which makes it so difficult for Western diplomats to simply say no to the UN conference which singles out only one country, Israel, as the racist state of the world and calls its policies “apartheid.” What makes this conclusion even more surreal is the fact that the working group, which has been drafting the text, consists of human rights champions such as Libya, Iran and Cuba.

The language in the draft resolution has been unacceptable for many, still the decision to withdraw seems difficult to make. At the moment only a few governments beside Israel has decided to boycott the conference, namely the US, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands and Italy.

One thing is clear. The UN conference in Geneva, which starts today and runs through Friday, will not be a friendly place for any of us who sympathize with the Jewish cause. But things could be worse. In 1938 the world was said to be divided up in two categories, those nations which Jews could not enter and those which wanted

to expel them. The promised Jewish homeland was not even considered as an option for resettlement since it was believed to create more tension in then British Mandate Palestine.

A few years later there would be six million Jews less to accommodate but then, finally, the urgency of creating a Jewish homeland was realized by the world community. But the prize to pay was far too high.

It is of course the irony of time that a conference dedicating itself to fighting racism, the very disease which lead to Hitler’ s Holocau

st, is currently paving the way for a legitimizing of Jew hatred and Israel bashing around the world.

Let us hope that the world will have learned its lesson this time. When only one people’s state is singled out as racist in the whole world, we are awfully near to Evian 1938. On the second day of the UN conference, Tuesday, April 21, which also happens to be Holocaust Remembrance Day, a commemoration event will be held in the small synagogue in the city that hosted the fateful 1938 conference.

Against Racism in Geneva, but don’t blame the Obama administration. Blame instead the organizers who have turned what should have been a worthwhile assembly to eliminate the scourge of racism into a hate fest against Israel. The U.S. walked out of a similar UN-sponsored meeting in Durban, South Africa, in 2001 because it focused on Israel and an effort to compare Zionism to racism. This one, to judge from a draft of the preliminary text, is heading in the same direction. The administration should stick with its position unless there is a wholesale change in the text and in the anti-Israel attitude that has prevailed so far. At this point, there’ s not much chance of that happening.

Durban II parallel forum opens in Geneva

A parallel meeting to Durban II which was organized by the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network, the International Coordinating Network on Palestine and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Committee, kicked off at a Geneva hotel Sunday, one day ahead of the United Nation’s conference on racism.

Some 160 participants attended the conference, entitled the Israel Review Conference: ‘United Against Apartheid, Colonialism and Occupation, Dignity & Justice for the Palestinian People.’

The Palestinian NGO Badil, accredited to Durban I and II, presented a 300-page report on ‘Israel’s Practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and the International Legal Prohibition on Apartheid.’

Several lawyers spoke on bringing Israel to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the European Court of Justice for war crimes.

Workshops were held on an ‘International campaign against the Jewish National Fund’; ‘State responsibility and arms trade with Israel’; ‘Legal BDS – Popular Tribunals and Public Petitions.’

A debate entitled ‘Israeli apartheid’ paid credit to Jimmy Carter’s book Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, and political experience in the trade union movement in the combat against South Africa.

The concept was vaunted as a valuable tool for political mobilization and solidarity.

Campaigns were proposed to launch international legal measures to reclaim Palestinian property.

An initiative was proposed regarding water, by highlighting the supposed distinction between Israeli swimming pools and the “meager amount available for Palestinian olive trees.”

Countermeasures were discussed against those attempting to criminalize the boycott. Concrete examples reportedly mentioned an attack in Ireland on commercial and military suppliers to Israel where demonstrators apparently damaged computers at the Raytheon factory, bound for Israel.

There was debate on construction of a European resistance movement, based on the concept ‘We are all Hizbullah, we are all Hamas. The world stopped Nazism, the world stopped Apartheid, we will stop Zionism.’

PR experts analyzed language for campaigns, recommending focus on “population transfer” and to be cautious in using the Nazi analogy as this opens the campaign to charges of anti-Semitism.

Badil suggested that South Africa and Israel not be presented as analogies, but that the Apartheid experience was applicable as this identifies “a program of racial engineering”.

“Race, color, family, descent, are related concepts. The Jew, by virtue of descent, has taken rights over the land that non Jews do not share. Jewish supremacy or Zionism through nationality or people hood has been the basis for ethnic cleansing.”

It was noted that the participants were eager to find ways to impact upon the proceedings of the UN Durban Review Conference (Durban II), and to structure shared campaigns and resources after the conference concludes.

Wiesenthal Center officials presently in Geneva, Dr.

Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations) and Sergio Widder (Latin American Representative) commented on “the tragedy that so much hate was concentrated on maximizing harm to the Jewish State rather than focusing on issues of racism and discrimination in the Middle East. Where were the women, trade unionists, writers, homosexuals, and indeed Christians and other religious minorities to lament the violation of their counterparts’ fundamental rights in Palestine and Iran? How come this gathering did not condemn the scheduled visit of Iranian President [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad in view of his genocidal statements, his patronage of terrorism, his denial of the Holocaust and his country’s nuclear designs?”

“This event was yet another example of Durban II’s bankruptcy and its kowtowing to tyrants”, the Center concluded.

A related initiative was the NGO Civil Society Forum March against Racism. Groups of Tamils, Kurdish victims of the Iraqi Halabja gassing and sexual diversity activists clustered at

the demonstration edges.

Dalits (Indian ‘Untouchables’) were segregated across a busy intersection. At the Wiesenthal Center’s suggestion they moved their banners under the main podium.

Nevertheless, the event was clearly monopolized by the Palestine issue and by spokesmen of other groups that addressed that cause.

A main speaker was MK Jamal Zahalka who presented himself as a Palestinian victim of “Israeli racist apartheid”. He ended his speech proclaiming “No Peace Without Justice”.

Samuels noted “the absurdity of Zahalka’s contention, in that as an Israeli-Arab, he enjoys a total freedom of expression denied to all other Middle East legislatures, the Libyan chaired Durban II Preparatory process and, above all, Apartheid South Africa”.

Zahalka was followed by former UN Human Rights Council Rapporteur on Racism, Doudou Diene. He endorsed the legitimacy of the gathering and Durban II as a political process saying that Zionism is not racism but a political ideology, which must be confronted politically.

At another alternative event, the Civil Society Forum for the Durban Review Conference, Diene laid out measures for a reparations campaign on behalf of trans-Atlantic slave trade victims.

Widder commented on “the narrow attention to only the Western slave trade, thus excluding African victims of Arab slavers and those targeted by the contemporary traffic in women and children.”

The Myth of Antichrist Coming Out of Europe

I spent a fair part of my life overseas in Europe, the Holy Land, and the Far East. I watched a devastated Europe crawl out of it’s bombed out cities on both sides of the Iron Curtain after WW-2 ended. I was curious to see how the new generation would evolve after two devastating world wars. Hal Lindsey and other evangelicals were confident the biblical Antichrist would arise in Europe, uniting ten European horns to form a European coalition to attack Israel and conquer the world. As I watched Europe come back to life, and a steady stream of Islamic believers flow northward into Europe out of Africa and the Middle East, it became apparent to me during the fifties that the Europeans were sick of war, and had their fill of it, even developing a phobia against it. I have never believed the Antichrist would come out of Europe, and I am more certain of it now than I was in the fifties. I certainly agree with Pat Buchanan’s article “Why Europe Won’t Fight,” which follows our heading.

When a best selling book was written in the fifties about six emerging European Common Market nations, it began to cause many theologians to rapidly change their minds as to where the antichrist would eventually arise. Prior to that time most had believed he would arise out of the old Seleucid dynasty, which was formed by one of the generals who divided Alexander’s Grecian Empire into four sections. Many believed the Assyrian, in the fifth chapter of Micah, would be the antichrist, and that he would arise in, and come out of, modern day Syria.

Before the European Common Market theory arose, a majority believed antichrist would come out of the southern half of the old Roman Empire, rather than out of the European northern half. But the great popularity of the aforementioned book ascended to the highest levels of acceptability, and previous beliefs were dwarfed to obscurity.

The book indicated that the six original members of the Common Market would soon be joined by four other nations to reach ten, and then be joined by the eleventh horn, who would be the antichrist of Daniel’s fourth beast in chapter seven. However, soon there were ten horns, then there were eleven,

then more, then fifteen, then 27 in 2008.

But the astounding popularity of this book, and the thousands of preachers and other teachers who have taught it, have left a legacy such that it is difficult to convince believers they might not be correct in what they have taught, and are still teaching.

It is difficult to picture the beast of Daniel 7 with 27 horns and the statue of Daniel 2 with 13 toes on one foot and 14 on the other.

Daniel 2:42 – And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.

I have been concerned, since the book was first published, about the possibility it might cause many to be deceived when Antichrist does not arise in Europe, but in Syria. Quite frankly, I watch both Europe and Syria just like a hawk, and, if I do see him rising in Europe, I most assuredly will accept it. I am prepared for both.

But many are so convinced he must come out of Europe, I doubt if anything would change their minds. In any case, in future blogs I will continue to show my reasons for believing he will come out of the Syria area.

Daniel 7:23-25 – Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. [24] And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. [25] And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

The beast of Daniel 7:23 does indeed represent the old Roman Empire, and it certainly did tread down “the whole world,” that is, the “known” world of Daniel’s day. Have you ever thought that perhaps we were meant to take the expressions of Daniel’s day concerning the world, and believe that is the only part of the present world the antichrist will dominate completely

? The ten horns will arise out of “the whole world” of Daniel’s day. But why do they have to be European nations? Were not Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, northern Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and northern Sudan part of the old Roman Empire under the Emperor Trajan? And are not these countries the descendants of Ishmael, the first son of Abraham, and Keturah’s six sons by Abraham, and the two sons of Abraham’s nephew Lot, Moab and Ammon by his two daughters? Are not these descendants of Abraham the ones who have hated and battled the sons of Abraham through Israel for many centuries? In any case, since I believe the attack is likely to occur before 2015, I expect to know where he will arise one way or the other in the next few years, that is, if I survive the grave before Jesus returns.

I do not question that Europe will come down as part of the mass of many nations that join antichrist in Jerusalem for the final battle of Armageddon, but I am confident that the initial attack of the tribulation period will be by the Antichrist leading Islamic nations against Israel.

Why Europe Won’t Fight

“No one will say this publicly, but the true fact is we are all talking

about our exit strategy from Afghanistan. We are getting out. It may take a couple of years, but we are all looking to get out.”

Thus did a “senior European diplomat” confide to The New York Times during Obama’s trip to Strasbourg.

Europe is bailing out on us. Afghanistan is to be America’s war.

During what the Times called a “fractious meeting,” NATO agreed to send 3,000 troops to provide security during the elections and 2,000 to train Afghan police.

Thin gruel beside Obama’s commitment to double U.S. troop levels to 68,000.

Why won’t Europe fight?

Because Europe sees no threat from Afghanistan and no vital interest in a faraway country where NATO Europeans have not fought since the British Empire folded its tent long ago.

Al-Qaida did not attack Europe out of Afghanistan. America was attacked.

Because, said Osama bin Laden in his “declaration of war,” America was occupying the sacred soil of Saudi Arabia, choking Muslim Iraq to death and providing Israel with the weapons to repress the Palestinians.

As Europe has no troops in Saudi Arabia, is exiting Iraq and backs a Palestinian state, Europeans figure, they are less likely to be attacked than if they are fighting and killing Muslims in Afghanistan.

Madrid and London were targeted for terror attacks, they believe, because Spain and Britain were George W. Bush’s strongest allies in Iraq. Britain, with a large Pakistani population, must be especially sensitive to U.S. Predator strikes in Pakistan.

Moreover, Europeans have had their fill of war.

In World War I alone, France, Germany and Russia each lost far more men killed than we have lost in all our wars put together. British losses in World War I were greater than America’s losses, North and South, in the Civil War. Her losses in World War II, from a nation with but a third of our population, were equal to ours. Where America ended that war as a superpower and leader of the Free World, Britain ended it bankrupt, broken, bereft of empire, sinking into socialism.

All of Europe’s empires are gone. All her great navies are gone. All her million-man armies are history.

Her populations are all aging, shrinking and dying, as millions pour in from former colonies in the Third World to repopulate and Islamize the mother countries.

Because of Europe’s new “diversity,” any war fought in a Muslim land will inflame a large segment of Europe’s urban population.

Finally, NATO Europe knows there is no price to pay for malingering in NATO’s war in Afghanistan.

Europeans know America will take up the slack and do nothing about their refusal to send combat brigades.

For Europeans had us figured out a long time ago.

They sense that we need them more than they need us.

While NATO provides Europe with a security blanket, it provides America with what she cannot live without: a mission, a cause, a meaning to life.

Were the United States, in exasperation, to tell Europe, “We are pulling out of NATO, shutting down our bases and bringing our troops home because we are weary of doing all the heavy lifting, all the fighting and dying for freedom,” what would we do after we had departed and come home

?

What would our foreign policy be?

What would be the need for our vaunted military-industrial complex, all those carriers, subs, tanks, and thousands of fighter planes and scores of bombers? What would happen to all the transatlantic conferences on NATO, all the think tanks here and in Europe devoted to allied security issues?

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the withdrawal of the Red Army from Eastern Europe and the breakup of the Soviet Union, NATO’s mission was accomplished. As Sen. Richard Lugar said, NATO must “go out of area or out of business.

”

NATO desperately did not want to go out of business. So, NATO went out of area, into Afghanistan. Now, with victory nowhere in sight, NATO is heading home. Will it go out of business?

Not likely. Too many rice bowls depend on keeping NATO alive.

You don’t give up the March of Dimes headquarters and fund-raising machinery just because Drs. Salk and Sabin found a cure for polio.

Again, one recalls, in those old World War II movies, the invariable scene where two G.I.s are smoking and talking.

“What are you gonna do, Joe, when this is all over?” one would ask.

Years ago, we had the answer.

Joe stayed in the Army. He couldn’t give it up. Soldiering is all he knew. Just like Uncle Sam. We can’t give up NATO because, if we do, we would no longer be the “indispensable nation,” the leader of

the Free World.

And, if we’re not that, then who are we? And what would we do

?

Egyptian state paper: ‘Axis of evil’ tried to overthrow regime

An axis of evil which includes Iran, Syria, Qatar and Hamas has attempted to destabilize Egypt and ultimately engineer a coup against the government, state paper Al-Ahram alleged on Saturday.

In an exceptionally strong-worded article, the paper stated that the Hizbullah cell recently arrested by Egyptian authorities was not only planning to carry out terror attacks in the country, but was also set up as a basis for a larger conspiracy, one that sought to overthrow and replace the Egyptian regime.

The paper pointed fingers at various Arab states and bodies which it claimed were partners to the plot, including Iran, Syria, Qatar, Al-Jazeera TV, Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Based on all the evidence collected by Egyptian security forces following the cell’s apprehension, Al-Ahram stated, it was becom ing clear that these organizations and nations had conspired aga

inst Egypt, using various means to undermine Egyptian rule and create chaos in the country.

The plan, alleged the paper, began with Hamas’s violation of the cease-fire with Israel in December – a decision, it said, that was dictated by Iran and its allies.

“In the period leading up to the Israeli invasion of Gaza, it was decided that Hamas would surprisingly announce it was no longer obligated to the cease-fire, and indeed, [the organization] began firing rockets in a manner no one understood,” the article claimed.

Then, when Israel retaliated, members of the ‘axis’ accused Egypt of having conspired with the US and Israel against Hamas, using Qatar’s Al-Jazeera television network to further delegitimize Cairo in the eyes of the Arab world.

The paper also claims that Qatar – which the article refers to as a minuscule state – attempted to sabotage Egyptian, Turkish and European efforts in the region, by hosting a summit for the ‘axis’ states. It was referring to January’s summit in Doha concerning Operation Cast Lead, which was attended by leaders of hard-line states such as Iran and Syria, and boycotted by Western-backed states such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Finally, the article also lashes out at the Muslim Brotherhood, which it claims had been planning to exert it influence

to organize protests, encourage chaos and bring about a regime change.

It also tried to pressure Cairo into opening the Rafah crossing and agreeing to demands which would bring about the annulment of Egypt’s peace accords with Israel and ignite a new war.

Egypt finds five smuggling tunnels in Egyptian side of Rafah

Egyptian security forces uncovered five smuggling tunnels on the Gaza-Egypt border on Saturday, Israel Radio reported.

The tunnels’ openings were found in the Egyptian part of Rafah, a town cut in half by the border.

Food, mo torcycles and computer parts were inside the tunnels, according

to the Egyptians. The security officials said Egypt would destroy the tunnels.

Earlier Saturday, Egyptian officials told the London-based Asharq Alawsat that interrogation

of Hizbullah members detained in Egypt over the past two weeks revealed that the cell was planning to smuggle explosive belts and dynamite with the help of Israeli Arabs in order to carry out a suicide attack inside Israel.

According to the officials, the members of the cell had two suitcases containing dynamite when they were captured.

Over the weekend Egypt opened the Rafah border crossing for two days to allow Palestinians who left the Gaza Strip to receive medical treatment in Egypt to return home. An Egyptian news agency reported that approximately 200 Palestinians convalescents were expected to cross back into the Strip on 30 ambulances.
