Dear President-elect Obama,

They say that you prefer the name Barry, and so it pleases me no end that another Barry is finally president of the United States. In addition, I once worked as a community organizer, so we have two things in common.

On that basis, then, I hope you don’t mind my making some suggestions about how you might think about the Middle East.

I’m not looking for a job in Washington. In fact, as I look back on my life, I note that if I’d been successful in some obsession for a US government post, I might have been a participant in such endeavors as the catastrophic mishandling of Iran’s revolution, the failed US dispatch of troops to Lebanon, the botched trade of arms for hostages with Iran, the crashed peace process and the Iraq war.

So don’t be misled. Today, everyone’s talking about how wonderful you are. Those are the people who want jobs, favors and access.

There are others who want something else from you – like control over Lebanon, Israel, Iraq or Georgia – who are more likely to be psychopathic than sycophantic.

Your expressed theme for your administration’s Middle East policy can be described in one word: conciliation. You think that your predecessors made unnecessary enemies and blocked, rather than furthered, progress. Building on the basis of your perceived popularity and sincere goodwill, you believe that it is not so heard to make friends with Iran and Syria, soothe grievances that have caused Islamism and terrorism and solve the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Good luck. We hope you succeed.

But please bear in mind some important points.

• In the Middle East, it is not so useful to think yourself popular and show yourself to be friendly. You have to inspire fear in your enemies and confidence in your friends. And if you don’t inspire fear in your enemies – if you’re too nice to them – then you will indeed foment fear among your friends.

• Not everyone thinks the same way.

When you talk of “empathy,” America’s enemies hear the word “fear.” When you speak of change, they, too, want change. Unfortunately the change they want means wiping other states off the map, creating radical Islamist dictatorships and kicking the United States out of the region.

This is no misunderstanding: it’s a conflict.

IN THE film, Cool Hand Luke, the noble convict (played by Paul Newman) jokes to the sadistic guards, “What we have here is a failure to communicate.” The audiences laughed. What everyone has forgotten is that a moment later they shoot him dead. Harvard Law School meets the law of the jungle.

You are going to talk to Iran, negotiate with Syria and try to buy the Palestinians or press the Israelis into making peace. It’s your presidency and many Americans think – rightly or not – that this hasn’ t been

tried enough.

But please keep in mind four very important points for when the going gets rough:

1. How much do you offer them and at whose expense? Not too much, please.

2. How closely will you monitor whether or not they are keeping their commitments

? Be tough, please.

3. At what point will you conclude that they don’t want to end existing conflicts or be America’s friends? Don’t wait too long, please.

4. What do you do when you figure out this doesn’t work? Don’t be afraid to admit the truth, blame those responsible and try something else.

IRAQ, FOR example: You want to withdraw and turn the war over to the Iraqis. This makes sense. But what will you do if Iran escalates to make your withdrawal look like a defeat and fill the vacuum – subtly, of course, not too openly.

And what do you do to combat Iranian and Syrian efforts to turn Iraq, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip into their sphere of influence? They will pump in money, pump up hatred and kill anyone who stands in the way. Making a good speech, apologizing for the past or offering more concessions won’t work.

If you think Afghanistan is easier to deal with than Iraq, the opposite is true.

No one tames Afghanistan. Its endless conflicts are a product of geography, ethnic conflict, a macho militarist political culture and a very low level of development. In Iraq, the majority wants a stable resolution.

In Afghanistan, the choice is permanent holding action or collapse.

What happens when the Europeans hug and kiss you, then refuse to extend sanctions on Iran further? Will you remain Europe’s favorite American president by asking them to do nothing

? How will you convince the Saudis, Jordanians, Egyptians, Lebanese and others that you are their reliable protector against Iranian nuclear weapons and the advance of Iranian-Syrian power when they know how eager you are to make up – possibly at their expense – with Teheran and Damascus?

Westerners are eager to resolve conflicts; revolutionaries want to use conflicts. You think grievances can be resolved; their grievances are insatiable. Make a concession, they ignore it and demand another. Withdraw from a territory, they occupy it and turn it into a base for the next advance. Explain that you feel their pain, and they add to your pain.

This is what it is like to deal with extremists and ideologues.

Right now you don’t understand why Bill Clinton and George Bush couldn’t solve a little thing like the Arab-Israeli conflict, defuse the massive hatred of America in the Middle East, end terrorism or turn radical Islamism into an ideology of peace.

Don’t worry. You will.

There is no question in my mind as to the valid ity

of the conclusions advanced in the summary of the presentation by Giora Eiland at the Tel Aviv Workshop for Science Technology and Security. To give up these two tracks of land given to Israel by God, would go down as one of the great military blunders in history.

presentation by Giora Eiland, former head of the National Security Council at the 4 November 2008 session on military superiority at the Tel Aviv Workshop for Science Technology and Security.

The summary was prepared by Uri Reychav, former Chief Systems Engineer at Rafael.

Syria: There is a debate over the continuation of negotiations with Syria.

A more important topic is if there is a regurgitation of past understandings or if the conditions have changed. Let us consider the military concept and

the security arrangements that evolve from them.

There were negotiations with Syria with maps and numbers and arrangements. We said then, that if we leave the Golan there must be other arrangements that will insure our security. Namely, the ability to defend ourselves in the case of attack.

Can we defend ourselves without the Golan

? The answer was – no. Thus the agreement had to cerate a situation in which in the case of war we would be able to grab the Golan.

It was thought then that such a situation would be if:

A. The Golan is demilitarized.

B. The Syrian divisions are beyond Damascus

C. Our forces are in the Hulah Valley

Today we see two problems with these conditions:

1) Such an arrangement is based on five assumptions:

A. The arrangement will be honored and not collapse.

B. When they Syrians move we will correctly interpret their intentions. This is also not certain. They can build cities and villages next to the new border and riots could break out along with a substantial military movement.

C. The Government of Israel would quickly call up the army.

D. The timetable is correct and we aren’t making a mistake

E. That there is a decision by the Government of Israel that this is war and it acts.

2) The assumption is that the threat

is a Syrian division. But maybe the threat is irregular forces, as is the case in Lebanon? That something like Hezbollah sets itself up in cities and villages on the Jordan? And that deep in their heartland they have advance missiles? And that the equipment they have is advanced – even more advanced than ours?

Thus, the concept nine years ago was in error.

If we carry out negotiations with Syria now based on the old records – the question remains: can we defend ourselves without the Golan?

Palestinians: The concept during the Clinton era was that the military threat from the east – Jordan and its partners, is from armored forces and the terror threat was seen in terms of terrorist penetrations. The solution was to retain intelligence warning stations in the field against the tanks and a security fence against terror.

But today other threats also exist. The Palestinians can arm themselves with rockets and missiles and it is impossible to verify that they are demilitarized. In the scenario of general war it would be impossible to use the main north south toll road – Route 6.

Therefore, because of Hezbollah it is impossible to return to the ’67 lines. It might be enough against a conventional army, maybe there is a solution for handling an individual suicide bomber, but the overall threat “requires more control of the territory”.

Genesis 10:1,2 – Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. [2] The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.

Ezekiel 38:1-3 – And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, [2] Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, [3] And say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:

In these verses God tells Ezekiel to set his face against a PERSON and a PLACE. The PERSON is Gog, who is clearly identified as the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. Gog is definitely NOT the chief prince of the land of Magog.

The PLACE against which Ezekiel is to set his face is the LAND of Magog.

Now! what about the “land of Magog?” Where were the Magogites located at the time of Ezekiel’s writings? Flavius Josephus, the noted Jewish historian makes the following statements concerning the Magogites in Antiquities of the Jews, Chapter VI, under the title, HOW EVERY NATION WAS DENOMINATED FROM THEIR FIRST INHABITANTS: “Japhet, the son of Noah, had seven sons.” “They called the nations by their own names.” “Magog founded those that from him were called Magogites, but who by the Greeks were called Scythians.” The Greek writers of the Classic Age said the Scythians occupied the area which today we identify as stretching from Moldova eastward across the Ukraine, southern Russia, and into Kazakhstan, then southward into Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan – Roughly the area north of the Black Sea, between the Black and Caspian Seas, and the area northwest, north, and northeast of the Caspian Sea. I DO NOT believe the nations in this area will join in the initial attack against Israel, but I am certain they will come down for the final battle of Gog’s war, which is the Battle of Armageddon. The Battle of Armageddon, found in Revelation 16:16, is the final battle in Gog’s war, which began 3 and ½ years earlier.

Verse 3 fails to include the “land of Magog,” and is a message directly pointed, and personally addressed, against the Antichrist Gog, who once again is identified as the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. Popular writers in the last century brought a teaching into play that is simply not true.

They said the word “chief” was “rosh” in the Hebrew language, which is true. But they said it meant “Russian,” which is not true. The Russian and Hebrew language have never overlapped in history to support such a claim. He is not a Russian prince. He is the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, most likely having a Syrian father.

The word “rosh,” in the KJV, is translated as “chief” 90 times, as “head” 349 times, as “top” 75 times, as “beginning” 14 times, as “company” 12 times, as “captain” 10 times, as “sum” 9 times, as “first” 6 times, as “principle” 5 times, as “chief man” 4 times, and as “ruler” on two occasions. At no time, in all of history, could it legitimately be identified as someone who is a Russian. Gog will arise in the Middle East where the tribes of Meshech and Tubal were settled at the time of Ezekiel’s writings. He will most likely come out of Syria, extreme south Turkey, n orthern Iraq,

or extreme western Iran.

All this area was once part of the great Assyrian Empire of Micah and Isaiah’s day.

Since Putin stands a good chance of being the Russian President at the time the call goes out from the Assyrian Antichrist to come down and help him destroy all the remaining Jews at Armageddon, I submit the article which follows for information on the Russian power structure at the time the call may be issued.

Putin may soon be in power for two six year terms that would carry him to 2021.

Putin may return to Kremlin in ’09: report

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian President Dmitry Medvedev could resign from his post in 2009 to pave the way for Vladimir Putin to return to the Kremlin, Vedomosti newspaper reported on Thursday, citing an unidentified source close to the Kremlin.

Medvedev Wednesday proposed increasing the presidential term to six years from four years, a step the newspaper said was part of a plan drawn up by Vladislav Surkov, who serves as Medvedev’s first deputy chief of staff.

Under the plan, Medvedev could implement changes to the constitution and unpopular social reforms “so that Putin could return to the Kremlin for a longer period,” the newspaper said.

“Under this scenario Medvedev could resign early citing changes to the constitution and then presidential elections could take place in 2009,” the newspaper said, citing the unidentified source close to the Kremlinl.

The paper said Putin, who is currently prime minister, could then rule for two six year terms, so from 2009 to 2021. The paper cited Putin’s spokesman as saying he saw no reason for Putin to return to power in 2009.

Investors, already jittery over the impact of the financial crisis on Russia’s economic boom, are trying to work out who is really in charge of Russia, the biggest question for those seeking to ascertain political risk.

They are seeking any details on how the current set up — with Medvedev as president and Putin

as prime minister — could change. During Medvedev’s speech Wednesday the Russian stock market erased most of the gains it made earlier in the day.

Obama considering how to ‘approach’ Iran

US President-elect to ‘respond appropriately’ after he reviews congratulatory letter from Ahmadinejad.

CHICAGO – US President-elect Barack Obama said on Friday that he would “respond appropriately” to a congratulatory letter from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The Democratic president-elect confirmed that he had been sent a letter from Ahmadinejad following his historic victory over Republican John McCain.

“I am aware that the letter was sent,” Obama said in response to the only question of

the press conference about foreign policy.

“I will be reviewing the letter from President Ahmadinejad and we will respond appropriately.”

“It has only been three days since the election,” he added. “Obviously, how we approach and deal with a country like Iran is not something that we should, you know, simply do in a knee-jerk fashion.

“I think we’ve got to think it through.”

Asked whether he would send low-level envoys to US foes such as Iran, Syria, Venezuela, and Cuba to see if presidential-level talks could be “productive,” Obama said: “Let me repeat and state what I stated during the course of the campaign.”

“Iran’s development of a nuclear weapon I believe is unacceptable.

We have to mount an international effort to prevent that from happening,” he said.

Obama, speaking at his first press conference since winning Tuesday’s presidential election, also said Tehran must stop supporting “terrorist organizations.”

“Iran’s support of terrorist organizations, I think, is something that has to cease.”

The president-elect stressed during the 20-minute press conference that he has not yet taken office.

“I have to reiterate once again, we only have one president at a time,” he said. “I want to be very careful that we are sending the right signals to the world as a whole that I am not the president and I won’t be until January 20.”

Obama and McCain clashed repeatedly during the election campaign over the approach to take towards Iran, North Korea, Venezuela and Cuba.

Obama said he would explore the possibility of direct talks with the US foes, a stand condemned by McCain.

Ahmadinejad on Thursday congratulated Obama on his election.

“I congratulate you on being able to attract the majority of votes of the participants of the election,” Ahmadinejad said in a message carried by the official IRNA news agency.

“I hope you make the most of the chance of service and leave a good name by preferring people’s real interests and justice to the insatiable demands of a selfish and indecent minority,” he said.

“You are generally expected to make a fast and clear response to the demands for basic… change in US domestic and foreign policy, which all people in the world and Americans want on top of your agenda,” he told Obama.

Iran and the United States have not had diplomatic relations since 1979 Iranian revolution, which toppled the ruthless US-backed dictator, the shah.

Tehran never forgave Washington for supporting the shah, and angry Iranian students took American diplomats hostage for 444 days following the revolution.

Even someone like Ahmadinejad, who to some appears as a madman, is the typical example of the character of the “historical” Persian stereotype. Bashar Assad must have a touch of Persian blood flowing in his Arab veins, because he certainly fulfills the Persian stereotype even more than Ahmadinejad, being more reserved and sneaky as a snake.

Syrian president Bashar Assad has drawn encouragement to go ahead with a drive to recover his grip on Lebanon from signals coming in from Barack Obama’s team and from the peace overtures of Israeli transitional prime minister Ehud Olmert, DEBKAfile’s Beirut sources report.

To this end, the Syrian president has concocted an improbable disinformation cocktail which brings together the al Qaeda-linked Fatah al-Islam terrorist organization, Saudi intelligence and the Israeli Mossad.

This mix is designed to be explosive enough to discredit the Lebanese majority leader Saad Hariri and oust the pro-western government which stands in the way of Syria’s domination of Beirut.

Thursday night, Nov.

6, Syrian state TV paraded four Fatah al-Islam terrorists who are charged with bombing Syrian security installations on the Damascus airport road on Sept. 27 at the cost of 17 lives. Shown with them were documents “proving” that a Saudi businessman had bankrolled the attack as the manager of this al Qaeda-linked organization’s bank account.

Wafaa el-Abassi, daughter of the Fatah al-Islam leader, appeared next to “reveal” that she had heard her father say he had received moneys from Saad Hariri’s Mustaqbal Movement in Beirut.

Syria has taken to using Fatah al-Islam as a multitask tool for its propaganda needs, including the pretext for its military concentrations around Lebanon’s borders.

When he met US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice in New York last month, Syrian foreign minister Walid Muallem explained that Syria was forced to encircle Lebanon after Fatah al-Islam seized control of the northern Lebanese Tripoli region on orders from al Qaeda.

DEBKAfile’s sources report that with two ingredients of Damascus’ disinformation cocktail in place, Damascus is ready to go with the third.

The alleged Lebanese Mossad spy, whose detention was first revealed on Nov. 1, is about to be identified as Ali Jarrah, who was employed jointly by the Israeli Mossad and the Lebanese Saad Hariri. Damascus earlier implicated the spy in the murder of Hizballah’s military chief Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus last February.

This “revelation” is meant to close the disinformation noose around Hariri’s neck and undermine the reputation of anti-Syrian government leaders in Beirut as the sheet anchor of stable government in Lebanon.

Assad is presenting them instead as the hub of a roaring trade in operational plans, intelligence and funds among terror groups linked to al Qaeda, Saudi intelligence and the Israeli Mossad.

Israeli intelligence sources are highly critical of Olmert’s willingness to put up with Assad’s defamations of Israeli intelligence without protest for the sake of his prospective dialogue with Syria. Foreign minister Tzipi Livni and defense minister Ehud Barak are equally faulted for their failure to fight back.
