The following two quoted paragraphs from a November 19, 2008 article by Carter Andress in the Washington Times, titled “Iraqi Yellowcake Discovery,” give a very interesting insight into the awareness that Saddam Hussein really did have the basic essentials necessary to eventually develop nuclear weapons.

I do not believe crazy Saddam would have used them just for deterrent purposes.

Whatever Happened to the WMD in Iraq

This has been an intriguing question that has produced a lot of political hay for those who say the Iraqi WMD did not exist, but were merely an excuse to invade Iraq. And, to be perfectly honest, no one knows for sure what happened to the WMD. There was an event, which I did report in Special Prophecy Update Number 81A, that I really did not understand involving Iraq and Syria,

and it did indeed seem strange at the time, considering past relationships between the two countries. The following three paragraph quote is taken from the August 17, 2002 Update 81A, titled “More Strategic Dialog Among the 10 Toes,” which was written some seven months before Iraq was invaded by coalition forces.

“Iraq has recently been conducting large-scale military maneuvers on the Syrian border, reportedly by prior agreement with its new President, Bashar Assad. Bashar then made a trip to Iran to hold talks with its President, Mohammad Khatami.

The talks were described as a strategic dialog.

The healing process is taking time because of all the past conflicts that have occurred between these nations, but it is progressing because of a common healing balm – Their natural hatred for Israel, which far exceeds their dislike for each other.

The great breaches between them occurred in the last decade.

Iraq and Iran fought a very bitter war that took the lives of millions. The relations between Iraq and Syria, which are ruled by two rival wings of the Baath party, were severed in the eighties, but have been on the mend since 1997, fueled mainly by trade links. We have covered these trade links in detail in previous updates, as well as the sneaky way that Syria is militarily assisting Iraq and receiving oil benefits in return. This is one of the reasons that Bashar, last month, sent a message to Saddam on the thirty-fourth anniversary of his rival Baath party rising to power in Baghdad.

In the message he underlined his desire to boost the brotherly ties between Iraq and Syria.

An independent Jordanian newspaper, Al Hilal, reported that last week Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with Iraq’s Saddam Hussein on the border between

the two countries. The article said Assad took along his brother, Maher, and the head of the Syrian Intelligence Service with him to the meeting. During the meeting the report stated that Saddam presented Assad with an ancient rifle taken from the Iraqi museum.”

This meeting between two presidents of two rival Baath parties of two countries, who did not like or trust each other, seemed strange to me at the time.

Recent reports from a senior Syrian journalist, Nizar Najoef, who has recently defected to Western Europe, suggest that this meeting may have been for more than just a get together for a friendly chat. It may have been to coordinate the transfer of Iraq’s WMD across the border into Syria in the event Iraq was overrun by foreign forces, and the Iraqi maneuvers along the border on the Iraqi side may have involved the scurrying movement of special units of Saddam’s Republican Guard, who could have been in the process of concealing them along the border for a quick transfer to the Syrians, if necessary.

I linked the events of Update 81A in 2002 with a report from a Dutch newspaper article of January 5, 2004. It carried a letter from Nizar Nijoef in which he identified three Syrian sites where Iraq’s WMD are stored. Nijoef says he knows where they are hidden. Does he know? I honestly don’t know, and I cannot vouch for the validity of his claim, but it does explain the strange meeting of Assad and Hussein in 2002.

The Newspaper was “Die Telegraff,” and Nijoef claims the storage places to be as follows:

1. Sjinsjar on the Lebanese border with Syria.

2. The villege of Tal Snan.

3. In a vast complex of tunnels that are part of a great underground factory, built by the North Koreans, for producing Syrian Scud missiles. He claims that Iraqi chemical weapons and long-range missiles are stored in these tunnels. This underground complex is said to be beneath the town of al- Baida near the city of Hama in northern Syria.

Is his report the truth? I don’t know! But if it is, then you may rest assured the U.S. and Israeli Intelligences will find out, or already know one way or the other.

And if is true, and I were Bashar Assad, I would be making every effort to make peace with Israel and to get on the “good side” of the United States before they took action to eliminate the WMD. Oddly enough, this is precisely what Assad has been doing over the last two months.

It is somewhat ironic that the aforementioned Syrian city of Hama is ancient Hamath, which will soon mark the northern extent of the vast land grant promised to Israel by God through Abraham and Isaac. The vast grant will be occupied by Israel for a thousand during the reign of its Messiah.

Ezekiel 47:17 – And the border from the sea shall be Hazar-enan, the border of Damascus, and the north northward, and the border of Hamath. And this is the north side.

Last year I issued a Prophecy Update titled “Kurds in the Whey.” In it I discussed the role of the Kurds in the northern neck of Iraq. It is quite obvious that the shortest distance between Iran and Syria is across this northern neck. Do not be surprised if they discover some WMD have, and possibly still are, being moved across this land of the Kurds, or put in remote places in Iraq for future use. Believe it or not, Syria, Iran, and North Korea really are an axis of terror, and Osama ben Laden is among them.

In last year’s Prophecy Updates, I indicated I would continue to watch both the Syrians and the Israelis regarding the reality of negotiations between them that could lead to a false peace settlement between them. So far it has a been a lot of rhetoric between them to create the effect of which is the “good guy” who really wants peace, and who is the “bad” guy who doesn’t. The situation is worth watching, but until more than rhetoric to gain press favor and headlines stops, I simply intend to just keep on listening and watching for something real.

Shimon Peres is one of the best known far-left liberals in the Knesset and, when it comes to obtaining a lasting peace in Israel, he has always been able to close his eyes to factors that doom a true peace to failure.

The two excerpts which follow our lead demonstrate what I have just stated.

Israeli President Peres has been pursuing true peace in the Middle East longer than any other member of the Knesset, and has always believed it can be accomplished before the coming of Israel’s Messiah. The Bible clearly indicates true peace will not occur until the arrival of Christ.

However, even if I had never seen or heard of a Bible, I’d still believe Shimon Peres was chasing an impossible dream.

The very statement he makes in the following article, when he says Iran “is obsessed with its quest for religious domination, attempting to impose their version on everyone,” is the second reason true peace cannot be made between Islam and Israel.

This is a war of religious obsession so extreme it cannot be stopped.

LONDON – “The Iranian leadership’s grand design is to convert the Middle East into one religious bloc,” President Shimon Peres said Wednesday during his address to the British Parliament.

“The Iranian leadership is obsessed with its quest for regional religious domination. This quest is supported by long range missiles, enriched uranium and fanatic incitement – all fueled by the excessive price of oil,” he said.

“The Iranian leadership’s grand design is to convert the Middle East from a region of nations into one religious bloc. They attempt to impose their version on everyone. Whoever disagrees is deemed a heretic and is doomed to disappear.”

Peres added, “In discussions with Arab leaders I hear their opposition to any form of religious colonialism.”

The president said a joint effort was the only way to halt the Iranian threat in its tracks, “to answer fear with hope.”

Regarding Syria, Peres said Israel was “weighing the Syrian option – whether it is a clear cut turn for peace.” He also addressed the Saudi initiative for peace in the region, remarking that more negotiations were needed.

“The Saudi king has initiated a United Nations General Assembly session dedicated to the culture of peace, and in my address there last week, I responded positively to the Arab initiative,” he said.

“However, it should be clear that agreement can not be achieved by a simple ‘take-it-or-leave it’ offer. We couldn’t accept all the articles of the Arab Initiative. The truth is that it’s hard to answer all demands at a time when some parties in the region reject peace.

“Hamas violently rejects compromise. It continues to fire rockets at Israeli civilians.

We can understand land for Peace but will not accept land in return for rocket fire.”

Peres spoke of the global financial crisis, explaining that it “reflects the world’s inter-dependency.” He added, “It is likely that the present crisis will further globality and generate more responsibility. Global threats unite us. So do global hopes. We have to take a stand against the menace of terror and nuclear threats.”

The president said threats of boycott emerging from the UK against products made in the Israeli settlements were harmful to peace. He also remarked that most of the workers employed in the settlements are Palestinians, so they would probably suffer most from such protestation.

President Shimon Peres told assembled Jewish machers in Jerusalem: “You have to close your eyes” to make peace. He argued that a peace agreement with the Palestinian Authority will encourage Sunni Muslims against Ahmadinejad.

Speaking at the annual General Assembly of the United Jewish Committees, he said that “making peace is a little bit like marriage.

You have to close your eyes and accept what is possible to accept.” His audience laughed and applauded.

Not present was his wife Sonia, who reportedly no longer accepts him in her life.

Peres, in his eighties, has been catching up on lost sleep since taking office.

And he has been burdening the supposedly apolitical office of President with distinctly left-wing political positions.

It will be interesting to watch the international pressure build up on Obama to push Israel into allowing a substantial number of Palestinian refugees to return to Israel. I have no doubt Obama will initially stand on Israel’s side against the major fly in the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, but I suspect in the end international pressure will cause him to change his position. If Benjamin Netanyahu is the Prime Minister after the 2009 election, the fur will fly, and Israel will not compromise on its long standing violent rejection of the return of Palestinian refugees.

But if the Likud does not replace the current administration, there may well be a compromise on the part of Israel. Excerpt 1 is a preamble to what will eventually shift to the problem of Palestinian refugees from the Israeli-Arab wars, rather than the U.S.-Iraqi wars.

The U.S. position as the number one world power is eroding, and under Obama it will accelerate its decay.

Obama’s administration will seem, in the eyes of those who elected him, to be very successful and on the right track for avoidance of Middle East war in its first two years, but its early successes are the very thing that will lead to a major Middle East War by 2015. AMMAN: Experts from Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt will gather in Jordan this week to rally international support for hundreds of thousands of Iraqi refugees, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

United Nations and Arab League officials as well as representatives from Turkey and Iran are also taking part in the one-day conference on Thursday, Mohammed Shahankari of the foreign ministry said. “The technical meeting will discuss the situation of Iraqi refugees, focusing on ways to support host countries and help them provide more and better services for the refugees,” he said. About 4.4 million Iraqis have fled their homes since the start of the war, with nearly two million in Syria and Jordan, and another 2.5 million displaced within their own country, according to the UN.

Jordan estimates the costs of sheltering between 500,000 and 750,000 Iraqi refugees over the past three years at more than $2 billion, and Amman has repeatedly asked the international community to provide more direct aid.

THE leading US intelligence organisation has warned that the world is entering an unstable and unpredictable period in which the advance of Western-style democracy cannot be taken for granted, and the US will no longer be able to “call the shots” alone.

Powers such as China and India, as well as independent entities including tribes and criminal networks, will grow in influence, it predicts.

he National Intelligence Council every four years, makes sobering reading for Barack Obama as he prepares to take office as president in January.

It marks a dramatic shift from the review in 2004, which confidently predicted “continued US dominance” and said “most major powers have forsaken the idea of balancing the US”.

Looking ahead to 2025, the council, which co-ordinates analysis from all US intelligence agencies, foresees a fragmented world in which conflict over scarce resources is rising, poorly contained by “ramshackle” international institutions, while nuclear proliferation, particularly in the Middle East, and even nuclear conflict grow more likely.

The report, Global Trends 2025: A Transformed World, warns that the spread of Western democratic capitalism cannot be taken for granted, as it was by George Bush and the neoconservatives in the US.

“No single outcome seems preordained: the Western model of economic liberalism, democracy and secularism, for example, which many assumed to be inevitable, may lose its lustre – at least in the medium term,” it says.

Giving the examples of Russia and China, the report says: “Today wealth is moving not just from West to East but is concentrating more under state control.

In the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis, the state’s role in the economy may be gaining more appeal in the world.”

By 2025, the report says, the US will become “less dominant” in the world – no longer the unrivalled superpower it has been since the end of the Cold War, but a “first among equals” in a more fluid and evenly balanced world that will make the unilateralism of

the Bush era no longer tenable.

China stands to have more impact on the world over the next 20 years than any other single country and India will strive to represent one of the world’s economic poles.

International organizations such as the United Nations seem ill-prepared to fill the vacuum left by receding US power at a time of multiple potential crises driven by climate change and the increasing scarcity of resources

such as oil, food and water, the report warns.

Those institutions “appear incapable of rising to the challenges without concerted efforts from their leaders”, it says.

The council has also dramatically changed its assessment of the world’s energy situation. Four years ago it argued that oil and gas supplies “in the ground” were “sufficient to meet global demand” but the new report views a transition to cleaner fuels as inevitable. Only the speed of that change is in question.

The Most Anti-American Nation

Dear President-Elect Obama:

As you take office, I am enthusiastically watching your desire to win hearts and minds around the world. But I am concerned in particular about Turkey. This nation is the embodiment of what the United States and the West want to achieve around the world. It is predominantly Muslim, yet Western and democratic. But the Turks are vehemently anti-American, so much so that they consistently rank in polls as the most anti-American country in the world. According to the Pew Center’s latest poll, only 12 percent of the Turks like the United States — fewer, even, than the percentage of Pakistanis. Obamania in Turkey will help you change America’s image, but given the dismal numbers, I am afraid that might not be enough. Despite the close cooperation with the United States on Iraq, Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) government has taken the easy way, bashing America at home in an attempt to boost its own popularity. But you should not ignore Turkey. Because of its strategic location, Turkey is a key partner to the United States in tackling many foreign-policy challenges. You will need Turkish support and the Turkish base at Incirlik to achieve many of your goals, such as withdrawing troops from Iraq.

So allow me to make some suggestions on tackling anti-Americanism in Turkey.

First, do not dismiss the AKP’s rhetoric as benign domestic politicking. While an anti-Western statement by a Danish politician could be dismissed as “crazy,” and the same statement by an Egyptian might be considered “normal,” Turkey is neither Denmark nor Egypt. This is the rare country in which anti-Western statements actually matter because they help shape people’s identity. Since the AKP assumed power in 2002, the Turks have not heard anything positive about the West from their leadership. In fact, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has often lambasted the West, suggesting, for instance, that “the West uses terrorism to sell Turkey weapons” or that “Turkey has borrowed only immoral stuff from the West.”

The same attitude holds toward the United States. More than 90 percent of Turks do not read or write foreign languages well, and the AKP leadership is extremely and relentlessly negative toward America, and this is what Turks see in most of the media. When a group of men, all in their 20s, attacked the U.S. consulate in Istanbul in July, the response was not one of compassion or sympathy for America.

Rather, almost 20 minutes after the attack, pro-government news outlets started to brim with allegations that the United States was responsible for the deaths of three Turkish cops who were slain by the terrorists. Nobody in the AKP stepped up to the plate to fight negative media spin against the United States.

The effect of this is that millions of young Turks, like the men who attacked the consulate, have seen America only through the AKP’s foreign-policy rhetoric, including a very negative spin on the Iraq War. There is now a tsunami of young Turks ready to die while trying to kill Americans.

The lesson for you, President-elect Obama, is clear: with such anti-Western rhetoric, and because Turkish attachment to the West is so tenuous, your strategy must be to constantly remind Turks that they belong to the West.

You must recognize that while the United States cannot stop this entrenched anti-Americanism altogether, the AKP government can, and you should make this issue a part of your conversation with Ankara. Your policy ought to be zero tolerance toward official anti-American and anti-Western rhetoric in Turkey.

This step should be followed by positive reinforcement.

For starters, you must get the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) issue right. Since 2004, the PKK has increased its terrorist attacks into Turkey from American-controlled Iraq. In 2007, the Bush administration started to help Turkey take on the issue by providing Ankara with intelligence support. Now there is an opportunity for you to take that a step further by bringing Iraqi Kurds on board with the United States and Turkey to tackle the PKK. The Iraqi Kurds successfully helped Ankara and Washington fight the PKK in the 1990s, in due course cementing their ties with Ankara. If you engage the Iraqi Kurds to fight the PKK, you will open the path for the Iraqi Kurds and Ankara to build bridges with one another, while helping build the Turks’ confidence in the United States as a friend.

But let’s be honest. Even with this commitment, Turkish public attitudes toward the United States will change only if

the Turkish government adopts positive rhetoric toward America. Until and unless the Turks hear from their government that the United States is a decent country helping them against the PKK — a fact oddly missing from the AKP’s news briefs — and that Turkey shares values, institutions and interests with America, they will not adopt a favorable disposition toward the United States.

In the meantime, America’s standing in Turkey resembles a witch burning at the stake. The witch feeling the heat keeps yelling, “I’m not a witch.” Of course, the crowd will not believe her unless someone from the

crowd steps forward and says the person on fire is not a witch. That someone is the AKP government. I hope that you would ask the AKP to save America from the fire.

The Sejil: A New Iranian Missile

On Wednesday, November 12, the Iranian media reported the test launch of a new missile called the Sejil. According to Iranian defense minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, the missile is two-staged, with both stages powered by solid fuel and a range “close to 2,000 kilometers.” Iran’s state-sponsored television stations accompanied the report with pictures of the test.

The question is how much the news about the missile’s development is in fact news.

Some years ago, Iranian officials already announced that Iranian engineers were at work on “replacing the Shahab-3 missile engine” with a solid fuel engine. Later, the existence of a solid fuel propelled missile named the Ashura was reported.

This missile was tested about a year ago, though no details about the testing were made public and no pictures of the missile were broadcast. Based on Western intelligence sources, the test failed.

In any event, the Iranians have been known to present identical weapon systems with different names and use identical names for different weapons systems, so one should not be fooled by nomenclature.

It would seem that this time the test succeeded, and hence Iran’s confidence in broadcasting pictures of the missile launch. Nonetheless, no details about the test were made public. What range the missile achieved and if it in fact hit the designated target remain unconfirmed, nor is there independent information regarding the success of the test-firing

and the range attained by the test missile. In addition, and unlike previous occasions, no information about the test has been published to date by the Western intelligence sources that would undoubtedly monitor such tests closely.

From the launch pictures, one may infer the following:

The missile was launched from a level, desert-like region. It was launched vertically (like the Shahab missiles, and unlike the heavier rockets such as the Zelzal). The plume left by the missile after the launch is typical of the launch of a solid fuel propelled missile (and unlike the plume of the liquid fuel propelled Shahab-3).

It was impossible to see the launcher, which was probably deliberately hidden from the cameras, but it was possible to get the sense that the launcher was mobile, similar or even identical to the launchers servicing the Shahab-3 missile.

The missile itself looks strikingly similar to the Shahab-3. To the extent that it is possible to judge on the basis of the photographs, its dimensions are also similar to the dimensions of the Shahab-3.

The missile’s nose cone resembles a baby bottle, and probably has a similar or even identical payloads to that carried by the Shahab-3 M missile (the improved missile that also, according to Iran, has a range of 2,000 kilometers).

It is also possible to see openings, probably used for steering, both in the rear and in the middle portions of the missile, apparently indicating steering capability of both stages.

Both stages are of identical diameter, unlike most multi-staged missiles in the world (though similar to Israel’s Shavit satellite launcher).

Developing a solid fuel propelled two-stage missile indicates not inconsiderable technological know-how in a specialized field that differs greatly from the liquid fuel technology that has characterized Iranian missiles to date. Therefore, claims made by experts that this is in fact a Shahab-3 missile with a different logo have no foundations whatsoever.

It would seem that the new missile is intended to replace the Shahab-3 in Iran’s operational arsenal. From the outset it was likely intentionally modeled on the diameter and length dimensions of the Shahab-3, making it possible to be transported on similar or even identical launchers and allowing it to carry payloads similar or even identical to those carried by the Shahab-3.

A solid fuel propelled missile is much easier to operate than a liquid fuel propelled one. It does not require a long, complicated process of fueling a short time before its launch. It may be transported directly from storage to the launch vehicle, and launched shortly after the launch vehicle is in position at the launch site.

This type of missile is more mobile and therefore harder to locate prior to its launch. In addition, technological ability in solid fuel propulsion may affect not only the deployment of military surface-to-surface missiles but may also contribute to the development of independent launching abilities of satellites, both for

military and for civilian research purposes.

In terms of the new missile’s effect on the balance of power in the Middle East, it is important to note:

Israel has long been within Iran’s missile range. As long as there is no change in the warhead, i.e., the development of a nuclear warhead, there has been no change in the threat against Israel, though the fact that the missile is solid fuel propelled reduces its vulnerability.

There is a large gap between the test-firing of one missile and equipping an army with enough missiles to represent a threat with operational implications. Thus, even if the recent test was successful beyond all expectations and the missile goes into serial production in the near future (which in and of itself is not very likely), one may safely assume that several years will pass until Iran can deploy a significant number of missiles of this type.
