Warning: Palestinian Terrorists Seek to Kidnap Israelis in Sinai and Bring Them to Gaza (Prime Minister’s Office)

Warnings of terrorist attacks in Sinai have recently intensified.

Terrorists in Sinai are working to abduct Israelis in Sinai and convey them to Gaza.

The currently open border between Gaza and Sinai makes it easier for terrorists to move back and forth.

Therefore, Israel’s National Security Council Counter-Terrorism Bureau on Thursday called on Israelis to avoid visiting Sinai and any Israelis currently there should leave forthwith.

Palestinian Terrorist Groups Planning Attacks from Sinai – Amir Oren (Ha’aretz)

Hamas and other terrorist organizations in Gaza have used the newly open border with Egypt to send numerous terrorists into Sinai over the last two days with the goal of reaching Israel to commit attacks, Israeli defense officials said Thursday.

Open Border with Egypt Allows Free Flow of Terrorists and Weapons into Gaza (Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center)

The uncontrolled movement of crowds of Gazans in and out of Egypt means that Hamas can now smuggle terrorist operatives and weapons into Gaza with almost no interference.

Hamas Began Cutting Border Wall Four Months Ago to Ambush Israeli Forces – Mark MacKinnon (Globe and Mail-Canada)

Abu Uday, 23, of Hamas, said the systematic effort to weaken the base of the border wall began four months ago in order to ambush Israeli forces.

“We did these things so that if Israel entered the Philadelphi Corridor [a narrow stretch of no-man’s land between Gaza and Egypt] it would be easy to enter and attack them,” he said.

Hamas spokesman Ghazi Hamad said, “We don’t need Israel. If the border is open, we can bring anything in from Egypt.”

“Nobody Needs Tunnels Anymore”: Open Border a Nightmare for Palestinian Smugglers – Mark MacKinnon (Globe and Mail-Canada)

Mahmoud Mohammed is a smuggler, one of the hundreds of young Palestinian men who – until Wednesday – made their living crawling deep underground through the maze of tunnels that link Gaza with Sinai.

Mohammed said he was 17 meters below the surface, digging a new tunnel that was almost complete, when the ground above him started to shake with the first of more than a dozen early morning explosions set off by militants affiliated with Hamas that brought most of the iron wall that separated Gaza and Egypt crashing to the ground.

He said that when he got out, his boss told him to quit digging because “nobody needs tunnels anymore.”

BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) — An explosion in Beirut has killed four people, including Lebanon’s top anti-terror investigating officer, sources with the Lebanese Internal Security Forces and a government minister told CNN.

The attack in Hazmiyeh, a Christian neighborhood northeast of the capital, also wounded 38 others, security sources said.

“It was a powerful blast,” CNN’s Anthony Mills said. “I was less than half a mile away when it occurred and I felt the shock waves in the car I was traveling in.

“I arrived on the scene several minutes later and there was widespread damage — several vehicles

The explosion killed Capt. Wissam Eid and his driver, the sources said.

Attacks of this nature have escalated as Lebanon has been in the midst of a political crisis as pro- and anti-Syrian lawmakers in parliament are locked in a battle to elect a president.

The nation has been without a president since November 23, when the pro-Syrian Emile Lahoud stepped down at the end of his term.

Last week, a car bomb struck a U.S. Embassy vehicle as it traveled along a coastal highway north of Beirut, killing at least three Lebanese civilian bystanders.

In early December, an explosion in Beirut’s Christian suburb of Baabda killed Brig. Gen. Francois Al-Hajj, the head of operations for the Lebanese army, and his body guard.

In February 2005, the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in Beirut sparked widespread protests that led to the ousting of Syrian forces from Lebanon.

Al Qaeda Readies Dual-track Offensive in Iraq and Gaza

Al Qaeda’s new operational arm, Fatah al-Islam, completed its redeployment from Lebanon on two warfronts: Iraq and the Gaza Strip. Al Qaeda has managed to pull together two fronts for twin campaigns orchestrated by a single commander, Fatah al-slam’s Palestinian chief Shaker al-Abessi, from his new base in Iraq.

This feat, disclosed by DEBKAfile’s intelligence sources, eluded his predecessor, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who tried and failed to develop a joint Iraq-Palestinian command in 2005 and 2006 before he was killed.

Fatah al-Islam under Abessi’s command pinned the Lebanese army down at the northern Nahar al-Badr camp for four months in the summer of 2007 before being driven out.

Within three months, they had relocated on the two new fronts.

With his top command, Abessi was able to access Iraq from Syria in the last month by transiting a purportedly sealed border. According to our sources, the Palestinian-led terrorist force has reached North Iraq and is taking reinforcements from Lebanon and Syria preparatory to joining the main al Qaeda body fighting US and

Iraqi forces in other parts of the country.

In recent weeks, al Qaeda and its allies have shown signs of recovering from their trouncing by US and Iraq forces in most parts of Iraq; suicide attacks are climbing again. Just Sunday, Jan. 6, two struck in separate parts of Baghdad, killing 13 people, six of them Iraqi police.

US military commanders have taken to tingeing their’ accounts of major military successes with a dash of caution.

On Jan. 3, Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, the commander of U.S. forces south of Baghdad, said: Security gains that have led to a significant fall in violence over the last six months are tenuous and could be lost if Iraqis become disillusioned or extremists mount a major attack. “I’m very optimistic, but at the same time I’m very realistic. We have a tenuous security situation right now.”

As the Fatah al-Islam elite headed for Iraq toward the end of 2007, at least 120 rank and file were smuggled into Gaza through Sinai and by sea. They are very visible as they roar through Gaza’s streets in new mini-vans, brandishing the heavy machine guns and anti-tank weapons they brought with them. On display are their “Musab Zarqawi” missiles (a replica of the primitive Qassam short-range surface missile wielded by Hamas and Jihad Islami).

A high-placed Israeli military source said: “One would imagine the Taliban in Palestinian form had landed on our southwestern doorstep – the same sort of weapons, methods of operation and hot-eyed fervor.”

Our counter-terror sources report that Friday, Jan.

5, a video-tape was released in which Abessi urged his men in Gaza to fight the Israeli military to the finish and wipe out the “Zionist entity” – in the same way he claimed that the Lebanese army and the US military had been beaten at Nahr al-Badr. The Fatah al Islam chief quoted Osama bin Laden’s vow in a Dec. 30 audio-tape to “liberate the whole of Palestinian” and threat of ““blood for blood, destruction for destruction.”

The Abessi tape was recorded in Iraq and distributed in the Gaza Strip. His peroration is backed by shots of Fatah al Islam operatives firing missiles into Israel on Dec. 30 and 31.

Israeli officers liken the incursion of the Palestinian fundamentalists into Gaza to the early steps of al Qaeda and the Taleban in expanding across Afghanistan and deep into Pakistan, to the point that today they threaten to destabilize the Kabul and Islamabad governments.

But Israeli policy-makers refuse to admit a new peril is closing in from the Palestinian territory at war with the Jewish state.

An Israeli military officer conversant with the new development sees the Gaza Strip descending further into fundamentalist Islamization. He says: “If until now Hamas and Jihad Islami were the barriers to the return of Palestinian Authority rule evicted from the Gaza Strip last June, now they are bolstered and being further radicalized by al Qaeda’s ideology, propaganda, funds and arms, which are streaming unimpeded to the Palestinian territory.

These violent elements are further boosted by Al Qaeda jihadists, most Palestinian, who are escaping Suez Canal towns in flight from Egyptian security forces. They are finding sanctuary in Gaza.

Al Qaeda established its firs foothold in the Gaza Strip in 2005.

Israel must have been the only country in the world which did nothing to nip in the bud the buildup of a dangerous terrorist base along its borders. Today, the Olmert government continues to bury its head in the sand as the terrorist bases go up armed with full-blown military capabilities.

In the past week, the hodge-podge of extremist Palestinian organizations in Gaza fired 32 missiles into Israel and their first 122mm Katyusha rocket against Ashkelon, a major Israeli city.

SIX TERRORISTS PER SQUARE METER

January 25, 2008

http://www.tribulationperiod.com/

In the midst of all this current chaos along the Gaza Strip’s border with Egypt (Sinai), the most notable statement made by Hamas came from its Prime Minister Haniyeh. He reiterated the readiness of Hamas to reach a “comprehensive and mutual” truce or hudna with Israel.

Hamas would love to have a lengthy time of temporary peace to bring Fatah back into the fanatical fold, to consolidate both its political and strategic gains, and to prepare for a war it can win against Israel as part of a united force of some 10 Arab Nations, which would also include all the other terrorist groups and armies.

The goal of Fatah, Hamas, Hizbullah, Islamic Jihad, Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades, Al Qaeda, the Islamic Brotherhood, Syria, Iran, and any other terrorist state or group, is the same, namely to get Jews out of the land from Dan to Beersheba – They just have different ways and ideas of how to do it. But there is one banner under which they can, and will, soon unite, namely, the

reverse search

banner of Jihad.

This flooding of more than 600,000 Palestinians into northeastern parts of Egypt (Sinai) is much more serious than Egypt and the United States are going to admit. It is particularly hazardous for Egypt. Of course, most of the 600,000 are going to be pushed back into the Gaza Strip, but I assure you that specialized elements of Hamas, Al Qaeda, Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, and Islamic Jihad are going to link up with the anti-Egyptian government Islamic Brotherhood, and the current Egyptian administration will be in serious trouble. This cross border linkage in the northeast section of Egypt (Sinai) will eventually become what will amount to a new state of Hamaserbajanistan. If Israel ever does invade the Gaza Strip, its residents will flee into northeastern Egypt (Sinai) and take it over.

Hamas calls for shared border control with Egypt

Khaled abu Toameh, THE JERUSALEM POST

January 24, 2008

Hamas leaders on Wednesday called for an “urgent and speedy” meeting with representatives of Egypt and the Palestinian Authority to work out new, shared arrangements to control the border crossing in Rafah.

The call came shortly after Palestinian gunmen blew up large parts of the wall separating the Gaza Strip from Sinai, enabling tens of thousands of Palestinians to cross freely into Egyptian territory.

Palestinian and Egyptian sources estimated that some 300,000 Palestinians entered Egypt during the day. Although many had returned home by nightfall, the sources said thousands planned to spend the night in Egypt.

According to the sources, hundreds of Palestinians who had been stranded on the Egyptian side of the border for the past seven months seized the opportunity to return to their homes in Gaza.

Palestinian sources in the Strip said dozens of gunmen belonging to several armed groups used land mines to blow at least 20 holes in the metal border fence. Later, Palestinians used bulldozers to remove barbed wire and concrete slabs and to create paths for pedestrians and vehicles.

Egyptian border guards watched from rooftops and security towers as men, women and children began pouring into Egypt.

Syria-based Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal said his movement would insist that the border be placed under exclusive Palestinian and Egyptian control.

“We in Hamas and our brothers in the Palestinian government headed by Ismail Haniyeh declare our readiness to reach an understanding with the brothers in Ramallah [the Fatah-controlled PA] and the brothers in Egypt on how to manage the border crossings,” Mashaal said.

We don’t want to control anything. We only seek freedom and relief for the Palestinian people,” he said.

Mashaal appealed to the Arab countries to work toward ending the international boycott of the Hamas government and to lift the siege on the Gaza Strip. “I am addressing all the Arabs – don’t say that there is an international agreement concerning the Rafah crossing,” he said. “No one can believe that you can’t lift the siege. Don’t deceive yourselves.”

In Gaza City, Hamas Prime Minister Haniyeh called for an urgent meeting with Egyptian and PA officials to work out a new agreement for running the border crossing. “We don’t want to be the only ones in control of these matters,” Haniyeh said. “The Palestinians are not only demanding food and fuel supplies. We want an end to the siege and the reopening of all the border crossings.”

Haniyeh reiterated Hamas’s readiness to reach a “comprehensive and mutual” truce with Israel.

In Ramallah, PA officials rejected Hamas’s call for joint control of the Rafah crossing and expressed fear that Wednesday’s events would harm the Palestinians’ relations with Egypt. Nimer Hammad, political adviser to PA President Mahmoud Abbas, said Hamas was trying to embarrass the Egyptians and to “drag” the Arab world in the pursuit of its “narrow interests.”

Hamas: 500,000 will march on Erez

Khaled Abu Toameh, THE JERUSALEM POST

January 25, 2008

Egypt has assured the Palestinian Authority that it will reseal its border with the Gaza Strip in the coming days, PA officials in Ramallah said Thursday.

Egypt also informed the PA leadership that Cairo would not exclude the PA from any future agreement over controlling the Rafah border crossing, they said.

Meanwhile, Hamas threatened to send half a million Palestinians marching toward the Erez border crossing in northern Gaza.

“The next time there is a crisis in the Gaza Strip, Israel will have to face half a million Palestinians who will march toward Erez,” said Ahmed Youssef, a senior Hamas official. “This is not an imaginary scenario and many Palestinians would be prepared to sacrifice their lives.”

The PA is concerned that the events at the border with Sinai will boost Hamas’s popularity and enable the Islamist movement to smuggle more weapons into the Gaza Strip. The PA is also worried that Egypt will strike a separate deal with Hamas over the Rafah crossing.

“The Egyptian government has told us that the situation along the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt will return to normal,” a senior PA official told The Jerusalem Post. “They said they won’t be able to end the chaos in a day or two and this is understandable.”

The Egyptian message came as tens of thousands of Gazans continued to enter Sinai for a second straight day, after gunmen destroyed large parts of the security wall along the border.

Sources in the Strip estimated that at least half a million Palestinians had crossed the border since Wednesday morning. Other sources put the figure at 700,000 – nearly half the population of the Gaza Strip.

Hamas bulldozer wrecks another section of Rafah fence

Associated Press, THE JERUSALEM POST

January 25, 2008

Egyptian guards with riot shields formed human chains along the Egypt-Gaza border Friday, but were unable to stop hundreds of Palestinians from rushing into Egypt after a bulldozer wrecked another section of fence along the frontier.

Men in black clothing, some of them masked, stood atop the bulldozer as it knocked down a concrete slab under the watchful eyes of Egyptian forces on the other side who shot in the air in an attempt to hinder the flow of Gazans into Egypt.

Thousands of Palestinians, many of them carrying empty fuel canisters, managed to push through several openings despite the presence of the Egyptians deployed nine rows deep in some places. At one point, guards aimed a water cannon above the heads of people, not at them, to keep them back.

Cranes were positioned next to the border, lifting crates of supplies over into Gaza.

Egyptian forces took up positions a few steps into Palestinian territory, using shields to protect themselves from some Gazans who climbed atop car roofs and threw stones at them. Witnesses said a photographer was lightly injured in the clash.

The influx included a gaggle of Palestinian women in finely embroidered dresses and fresh makeup, heading to relatives’ weddings in Egypt they said had been hastily moved up to allow Gazan family members to attend.

Yousef Mohammed, 17, from Gaza, said he had waited until Friday to make the trip because he was trying

Egyptian Amira Ali, 39, carrying her toddler son and holding a 6-year-old son by the hand, said she wants to visit her mother-in-law in Gaza. “Of course, I’m afraid (of being trapped in Gaza), but will try to go for a while so my mother in law can see the kids,” she said.

Travelers returning from Egypt said they heard loudspeaker announcements there that Gazans had to return home by 7 pm (1700 GMT) Friday.

The border was breached Wednesday, when Palestinians blew down large sections of the border wall. Since then, Egypt has allowed tens of thousands of Palestinians to go back and forth, but has rejected any suggestion of assuming responsibility for the crowded, impoverished territory.

In an interview published Friday, President Hosni Mubarak called the situation in Gaza “unacceptable” and called on Israel to “lift its siege” and “solve the problem.”

“They should get things back to normal according to previous agreements and understandings,” Mubarak told the weekly Al-Osboa. He also invited rival Palestinian factions to Cairo for talks, but did not mention a date.

The opening of the border, even if temporary, provided a significant popularity boost to Gaza’s Hamas rulers, who can claim they successfully broke through the internationally supported Israeli closure that has deprived the coastal strip of normal trade and commerce for nearly two years.

Both Egypt and Israel restricted the movement of people and goods in and out of Gaza after Hamas won parliament elections in 2006, and fur

A handful of black-clad Hamas gunmen fanned out along the Gaza side of the border Friday, attempting to create order amid waves of Gaza residents approaching the area. It was the first time since the border fence was torn down that Hamas deployed uniformed men to deal with the chaos. The group has been using plainclothes agents to regulate the crowd.

The gunmen attempted to prevent cameramen from filming at the border area, at one point threatening journalists.

The Egyptian high command was informed that Hamas had begun moving some of its elite units to its new stronghold. Egyptian forces are not capable of contending with this strength or the hundreds of thousands of Gazan Palestinians on the move between Gaza and Sinai since Hamas blew up the concrete border fence Tuesday.

Israeli officials continue to treat the crisis as a problem for Egypt to address, rather than emanating from Israel’s failure to pre-empt Hamas’ well-laid plan with timely and appropriate military action. Senior military sources told DEBKAfile that Hamas’ strategic feat is irreversible. By demolishing the 10-km concrete barrier dividing the Gaza Strip from Egyptian Sinai, Hamas has acquired a new stronghold outside Israel’s military reach while their missiles and guns retain access to Israeli targets from the Gaza Strip.

DEBKAfile reports: Hamas Sinai coup glorified at counter-Annapolis conference in Damascus

January 24, 2008, 11:36 AM (GMT+02:00)

US and Israeli intelligence sources report that the Hamas coup in breaking down the border between Gaza and Egyptian Sinai was timed for the opening Wednesday, Jan. 23 of the Palestinian National Congress in Damascus.

cipro 500

This event was organized by Tehran and Damascus to counter the US-promoted Annapolis conference and discredit Mahmoud Abbas’ diplomatic track with Israel under the US aegis.

Tehran and Damascus brought to the congress some 900 Palestinian delegates of 17 radical Palestinian opposition groups and 300 “special guests” from across the Arab world. It was opened by hard-line Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal with a speech which glorified his Gazan brothers’ feat in breaking down the Gaza-Egyptian border as the greatest Palestinian achievement for years.

He declared that an “end to the occupation” in all parts of Palestine must take precedence over Palestinian statehood – a direct challenge to the Bush administration’s two-state thesis.

Rice and David Welch, assistant secretary of state for the Middle East, made a point of warning Mubarak that he must act expeditiously to restore border security because the entire Washington Palestinian strategy hinging on Abbas and the Annapolis declarations hangs in the balance.

But the Egyptian president replied that his main worry is not the Palestinian issue but concern that his own opposition, led by the Muslim Brotherhood, may adopt Hamas tactics and stir up trouble in his cities. Mubarak said he would leave the situation in northern Sinai as it is for the time being.

In other words, his troops would not force the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who swarmed out of Gaza to return home.

Such an effort would be a tall order, anyway. According to information reaching Cairo, Hamas has instructed large numbers of Palestinians who fled Gaza to stay where they are. Their assignment is to create a bridge between Gaza and the 40,000 Palestinians living in North Sinai. This population ballooned fivefold on Jan. 23 in the space of a few hours.

Furthermore, the Palestinian department of Egypt’s security services is on high alert after learning that the 130,000 Palestinians living in communities in Cairo, Alexandria and the Suez Canal cities are preparing to help their Gazan brothers steal into Egypt.

DEBKAfile’s Gulf sources reported eralir that Hamas leaders backed by Saudi Arabia, are pushing for an Arab summit, to be called an “Emergency Conference for Gaza” to take place in the Sinai town of Sharm al-Sheikh.

Their plan is for Saudi King Abdullah and Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak to jointly force Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas to stand alongside Khaled Meshaal and Ismail Haniya and patch up their quarrel for the sake of Palestinian unity.

This summit would empower Hamas to dictate a limited de fac

Senior Israeli military officers object to such ceasefire terms because Hamas and its allies would be free to resume their missile assaults at will and gear up undisturbed for escalated aggression at a time

UN rights council condemns Israel’s actions in Gaza, W. Bank

JPost.com Staff and AP, THE JERUSALEM POST

January 24, 2008

The UN’s top human rights body on Thursday passed a resolution condemning Israeli military action in Gaza and the West Bank.

The resolution, which also demands the lifting of the blockade on Gaza and calls for international action to protect Palestinian civilians, was proposed by Arab and Muslim countries and passed by 30 votes in favor, with 15 abstentions, during an emergency session of the 47-member UN Human Rights Council.

European countries abstained from the vote on the grounds that the resolution did not address the firing of rockets by Palestinian terrorists into Israel territory.

4,200 balloons placed on UN doorstep

Itamar Sharon, THE JERUSALEM POST

January 24, 2008

As the United Nations Security Council debated a response to the situation in the Gaza Strip and Sderot, Israel’s New York Consulate held a protest in front of UN headquarters on Thursday, in which they placed 4,200 red balloons on the UN’s doorstep. The number of balloons signified the 4,200 Kassam rockets fired into Israel from Gaza since the 2005 disengagement from the Strip.

The display was meant to raise world awareness to the fact that Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip are part of an effort to end the rocket attacks, the consulate said in a statement.

“Up until this day, every attempt to raise the issue and make it part of the American media’s agenda has been unsuccessful,” Consulate Spokesman David Saranga said.

” The suffering of Gaza residents has received increased attention recently.

The display is intended to emphasize the suffering of the residents of Sderot [and to] illustrate the incessant Kassam rocket attacks, as well as to call on the international community to stop ignoring what is happening in Israel,” Saranga explained.

Meanwhile, as the New York Consulate was staging the protest, five rockets were fired from Gaza into the western Negev. The rockets hit open areas and no casualties were reported.

Luke 16:8 – And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. I Thessalonians 5:3-5 – For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

Hamas Staged Some of the Gaza Blackouts – Khaled Abu Toameh (Jerusalem Post)

On at least two occasions this week, Hamas staged scenes of darkness as part of its campaign to end political and economic sanctions against Gaza, Palestinian journalists said Wednesday.

Journalists invited to cover the Hamas government meeting were surprised to see Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and his ministers sitting around a table with burning candles. Hamas legislators meeting in Gaza City also sat in front of burning candles.

But some journalists noticed that there was actually no need for the candles because both meetings were being held in daylight.

“They had closed the curtains in the rooms to create the impression that Hamas leaders were also suffering as a result of the power stoppage,” one journalist said. “It was obvious that the whole thing was staged.”

Hamas Leader’s Medical Specialty – Kevin Peraino (Newsweek)

Mahmoud Zahar is one of the most powerful Hamas figures in Gaza. One of the movement’s leading hawks, he displays a deep suspicion of most Westerners.

A New York Times reporter once asked the Islamist, who is a medical doctor, about his field of expertise.

“Thyroids,” Zahar replied. “I’m very good at cutting throats.”

U.S. Blames Hamas for Gaza “Chaos” (DPA)

U.S.: Israel “Defending Itself” with Gaza Blockade (AFP)

The White House said Tuesday that Israel’s blockade of Gaza was an act of self-defense against Palestinian rocket attacks.

“One of the reasons that Israel has taken the action it has is because it was sustaining upwards of 150 rockets falling on its territory a day. And so Israel is defending itself,” said spokeswoman Dana Perino.

Hamas Leader: Struggle Will Continue “Until Liberation of All of Palestine” (UPI)

Hamas political leader Khaled Mashaal told a Palestinian liberation conference in Damascus Wednesday: “The struggle must continue until the entire siege on the [Gaza] Strip is lifted and until the liberation of Palestine – all of Palestine.”
