It appears that the wild fanatical statements and claims of the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad since he ascended to the office, has struck a cord of “cool it” from the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. I suspect we may see a move away from the extreme Islamic far-right fanaticism toward a slightly toned down foreign policy

offered to the non-Islamic world.

But no matter how much Iran moderates its current policy its long term goal is the same as that of its first four great Caliphs.

The leaders after Muhammad were described only as khalifahs (caliphs), or successors to the Prophet, and not as prophets themselves. The first four caliphs were companions of the Prophet and their period of rule (632-661) is described by the majority of Muslims as the age of the Rightly Guided Caliphate. This was an era of expansion during which Muslims conquered the Sasanid (Persian) Empire and took control of the North African and Syrian territories of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire. The Muslim community was transformed from a small city-state controlling much of the Arabian Peninsula into a major world empire extending from northwest Africa to central Asia.

Iran’s present goal is to drive Israel out of its existence in what is called the Middle East, and to establish an Islamic Empire that stretches initially from Morocco on its western extremity to India on its eastern border, afterwards to expand southeastward into Malaysia and north into southeastern Europe with time, and finally to convert all mankind to the Islamic faith.

Interest and rhetoric in Iran’s foreign policy

Last week, the Sunday Times reported that Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has ultimate power over foreign and security policy, is considering the appointment of a more moderate team to supervise the negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme.

Khamenei is said to have been alarmed by scenarios about possible US strikes against Iran that would not only destroy its nuclear facilities but would also remove the Islamic regime.

Khamenei has concluded that Iran’s national interest has been undermined by the hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, whose inflammatory rhetoric and threats to destroy Israel have left Iran increasingly isolated and facing serious economic consequences.

This re-evaluation of policy is, in fact, a further demonstration of Iranian pragmatism, which has always been a trade mark of Iran’s foreign policy. Ever since the Islamic revolution of 1979, Iran has been trying to strike a balance between its national interests and the revolutionary rhetoric of the regime.

This balance was not easy to hold most of the time, but the vic

tory was almost always on the side of pragmatism, particularly when the survival of the regime was at stake or when national interest deemed that necessary.

In 1979, when the revolutionary regime in Tehran was lashing out at the US administration for its attempts to save the Shah government, the leader of the revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini, was in contact, from his residence in Paris, with the Carter administration through a permanent back channel to ensure that the US had accepted the revolution and that it was prepared to continue an arms supply relationship with the new government in Tehran.

To ensure positive response from the Carter administration, Khomeini exploited Washington’ s fear of communi

sm. He told the US negotiator Ramsey Clark that it was in the US’s best interest to support the revolution, which would prevent the Soviet Union from taking advantage of the situation in Iran.

He also warned that Iran’s communist party was about to take over power and that the Soviets were preparing to install a puppet government in Tehran.

Alarmed by Khomeini’ s account, Wa

shington offered a resumption of American weapons to Iran. The US not only released badly needed spare parts, but deliberations were also made to resume full arms shipment to Iran under contracts made by the outgoing Shah government.

Mark Gasiorowski, a respected US academic, has also claimed that Tehran received a CIA officer who gave “a briefing to members of the new Iranian government in which he presented satellite photographs and other evidence of Iraqi invasion preparations” against Iran.

Following this meeting, the US and Iran decided to increase

the level of contact between them.

Subsequently, President Carter’s national security adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski, arrived in Algiers and held talks with Mehdi Bazargan, Iran’s first post-revolution prime minister. Indeed, Americans were disappointed afterwards when their embassy was stormed by Iranian students and their diplomats were taken hostage.

The hostage crisis did not prevent, however, further co-operation, though through a third party. Stephen Green, another respected US academic, claimed that US arms did not stop flowing to Iran, through Israel, even during the hostage crisis with, Green claimed, “the knowledge and tacit approval of the Carter administration”.

This was the case not long before the Iran-Contra affair (in which the US agreed to supply Iran with arms, through Israel, in exchange for Iran’s help to release the US hostages in Lebanon and transfer payments to the Contras, Nicaragua’s main opposition group) was made public.

Historical

Theoretically, Iran has been one of the loudest opponents of the US policy in the Middle East and the Gulf region since 1979. Yet, historical events suggest that this enmity did not pass the edge of rhetoric.

Iran, which is caught in the pangs of revolution and religion, has never allowed ideology to influence its political conduct or supersede its national interests.

Taking the nuclear file from Ahmadinejad and allowing other members of the regime to talk about Iran’s readiness to start a dialogue with the US is just a further indication of this tendency in Iran’s political behaviour.

The concern over an American attack, like the one that destroyed Iraq’s Osirak nuclear reactor in 1981, explains the tilt in Iranian foreign policy towards accommodating the US pressure and preventing such a probability.

Firmness by Four World Power Group could aid in Peace Agreement!

The United States, United Nations, European Union, and Russia are expected to reaffirm a strong statement they signed a year ago.

The statement requires Hamas to: (1) Renounce Violence, (2) Accept Israel’s Right to Exist, and (3) To stand by Commitments made by the previous Palestinian Government.

Two Associated Press Articles from the Jerusalem Post, which follow, are interrelated to the possibility of a false peace with Israel, involving Fatah and Hamas as a single government negotiating with Israel. The civil war that is going on between Fatah and Hamas will cease if

Hamas, at least in deceit, appears to give in to the three demands made by the Big Four in Article one. They are also listed in the previous paragraph.

The proposed meeting of Article Two in Saudi Arabia, between the Real Head of Hamas based in Syria, and Fatah’s Abbas, might be the start of a move of deceit on the part of Hamas to seem to soften its hard stand on the three requirements placed on them by the Big Four in Article One.

World won’t back down from conditions for Hamas gov’t

World powers that met Friday for a strategy session on Middle East peace will not back away from the conditions they set for the Hamas-led Palestinian government to receive vital overseas financial aid and international political recognition, a US spokesman said.

The gathering of would-be peacemakers comes amid renewed fighting between Hamas and security forces loyal to the former ruling Fatah Party that has raised new alarm about a possible Palestinian civil war.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the United States, United Nations, European Union and Russia are expected to reaffirm a strong statement they signed a year ago, days after Hamas won a surprise victory in Palestinian elections.

That statement would require Hamas to renounce violence, accept Israel’s right to exist, and stand by commitments made by the previous secular Palestinian government.

Hamas has refused to meet those terms,

leading

to a cutoff of direct international aid and a breakdown of services and order in the Palestinian territories.

World powers have largely abandoned hope that Hamas radicals will drop the anti-Israel positions and are looking for a new approach.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that Middle East peace talks should resume despite an outbreak

of violence among Palestinian factions.

“It doesn’t help to talk about a timetable, but it does help to talk about a commitment,” Rice said after meeting with world powers for a strategy session on the Middle East.

Despite that violence, “There’s simply no reason to avoid the subject of how we get to a Palestinian state,” Rice said after a meeting at the State Department with foreign ministers from Russia, the European Union and the United Nations.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that in helping to advance the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, “Syria could play a constructive role.”

Rice expressed little enthusiasm for such a prospect.

“I hope that it (Syria) will in fact try and play a positive role rather than a negative one,” she told reporters.

The meeting convened by Rice risked appearing irrelevant in light of the internal Palestinian disarray. Any eventual political accommodation with Israel would require a Palestinian government unified and capable enough to negotiate lasting terms.

Abbas to meet Mashaal in Saudi Arabia

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas will meet with Hamas’ top leader in Saudi Arabia next week in another effort

to negotiate a national unity government agreement, an aide to Abbas said Friday.

The meeting between Abbas and Hamas supreme leader Khaled Mashaal was to take place Tuesday, the official said. The two leaders met in Syria last month, but failed to reach agreement on forming a government.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting had not been officially announced.

The decision to meet came as Fatah and Hamas gunmen battled in the streets of Gaza in a new wave of factional violence.

Abbas, speaking at his headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Friday, appealed for calm.

“I call on all parties in Gaza to stop these actions that harm the Palestinian people,” he said.

Saudi Arabia had invited Abbas and Mashaal to travel there to try to resolve their differences.

Speaking Friday at his West Bank headquarters, Abbas did not confirm the meeting, but reiterated that he was willing to travel to Saudi Arabia in theory for new talks with Mashaal.

“We are in contact now with Saudi Arabia over a meeting, and when they are ready to receive us, for sure we will go without any hesitation,” he said.

Suicide Bombers in Iraq Trained in Syria

Dozens of al-Qaeda suicide bombers from countries such as Saudi Arabia and Sudan are crossing into Iraq from Syria every month, a senior U.S. official said Tuesday.

The official said that 75-80% of the estimated 75 suicide bombings a month were carried out by foreigners, with the vast majority of suicide bombers coming across the border from Syria. They receive training for their task within Syria as well as inside Iraq itself.

The U.S. says outside actors – chiefly Syria and Iran – are still one of the biggest f

actors determining the level of violence in Iraq. “We have been wholly unsuccessful in affecting Syrian behavior with regard to the passage of these elements,” the official said, adding that the countries of the region wanted to isolate Syria further. (Financial Times-UK)

Fatah: 7 Iranian weapons experts arrested in Gaza

The Fatah-affiliated Palestinian Security Force arrested seven Iranian weapons experts working in the service of Hamas during a raid at the Islamic University, a Hamas stronghold in Gaza City, a senior Fatah official reported late Thursday, and another committed suicide during the raid.

The Fatah forces apprehended some 1,400 firearms and missiles found at the site.

Six Palestinians were killed and at least 65 were wounded, including two children, on Thursday during renewed clashes in the central Gaza Strip between armed Hamas and Fatah militants.

Truth, then Retraction by Chirac!

I have been waiting for years to hear French President Jacques Chirac make a single public statement with which I agreed. Well, he finally made it, only to quickly retract it once it had slipped out in a brief moment of truth from lips that routinely say one thing, but really mean something quite different – it is commonly referred to as guile – In his case mingled with pure deceit.

I am acutely aware that the elected President of Iran exhibits qualities of a recent escapee from the dark side of the moon, but he, contrary to several recent essays of his characteristics, is knowledgeable of the brief statement of truth initially uttered by President Chirac. It is more of a deterrent than recent articles by prominent officials have indicated.

Iran does not, repeat, does not want, a nuclear war with Israel or any other nation. They want a conventional war using high tech weapons, not nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons. Compared to Israel and the rest of the so-called civilized world, Iran and Syria’s abilities to send WMD’s against their enemies, is like comparing a bullet’s ability to stop a hurricane. The Islamic advantage against Israel is its sheer weight of human bodies it can throw against Israel, not the number of WMD it can launch against her.

Does the Iranian President want to create chaos and confusion in Israel and the rest of the civilized world – YES, YES, YES – and by the way, so far he has done a good job of creating it. Does he want to destroy the world in the chaos generated by a massive use of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons of mass destruction – NO, NO, NO! So what does he want? His first objective is to drive Israel out of its existence in what is called the Middle East, and to establish an Islamic Empire that stretches initially from Morocco on its western extremity to India on its eastern border, afterwards to expand southeastward into Malaysia and north into southeastern Europe with time, and finally to convert all of the earth’s population to the Islamic faith.

I have taught, for some 30 years, that the Antichrist, after he finishes his first assault against Israel, will initially place his capital in Cairo. He will leave Israel in the Negev Wilderness. Then he will then rule from Cairo for a little less than three and one-half years. He will then return to Jerusalem to launch the final battle of Armageddon against Israel in the Negev, with the intent of destroying her forever. The Antichrist is not yet visible to the world, but he will become quite visible when he is the supreme ruler, the Caliph, over a vast Islamic Kingdom, which will initially occupy the known world of the southern flank of the ancient Roman Empire at its maximum extent. It will, within three years after Cairo becomes its capital, extend its Islamic controlling tentacles east into southeastern Asia, and north into southeastern Europe.

The only question I have ever had in the basic premises I presented, was not in the sequence of the events themselves, or the area which would be covered by the kingdom of the future Antichrist – The question has always been WHEN he would attack Israel and drive her into the Negev Wilderness. WHEN is still the question I address daily as I watch the Middle East? All I have ever been able to do is to simply make what I call a guesstimate and, for better or for worse, I will continue to guess at the time of the attack until I die. I am not hedging, fence straddling, or trying to cover my tail – I have always been honest in telling you what I thought was the most likely time frame in which the attack would occur.

My guesstimate for the attack to occur at some point in time between 2008 and 2012 has not changed for some time, and I see no reason to change it.

The political, geophysical, and military positioning of Syria, Iran, and Iraq, from a prospective of having world influence, literally stinks. But the position of Egypt’s Suez Canal, and Cairo, her capital, is outstanding. The antichrist is supposed to be a man of genius in all areas.

That being the case, he would be worse than a military academy dropout were he not to take the Suez Canal, and then make Cairo his empire’s capital.

Daniel 11:43 – But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

The three most “precious things” in Egypt are: the Suez Canal, the Nile River and its Delta, and Cairo, it’s capital. He will conquer the Suez Canal zone and all of Egypt. So just what is Egypt? Many are inclined to establish it as the land bordered on the north by the Mediterranean Sea, on the west by Libya, on the south by Sudan, on the southeast by the Red Sea, and on the northeast by its Sinai border with Gaza and Israel’s Negev. And, geographically, that is quite correct.

However, in reality, that is not Egypt. The real Egypt, where her people live, is much, much, smaller. Egypt is the land along her north and east coastlines up to about two miles inland, the Nile Delta, and the land along the Nile River extending about fifteen miles either side of its banks.

The antichrist will send messages to leaders of two of the original 10 nations confederated with him, namely Libya and Sudan, requesting them to mass their troops along the northern coastal border with Libya, and along the border where the Nile enters Egypt from Sudan.

This will cause the diversion of some Egyptian troops away from Cairo and the Suez Canal in order to protect their western and southern borders. And this will allow the antichrist to rapidly push across the Suez Canal into Cairo and along her western and eastern coastlines, then to quickly progress southward down the Nile with little resistance. I believe he will control Egypt within two weeks after he reaches the Suez Canal.

Once he has conquered Egypt, he will make an assessment of his geopolitical position. After having done so, he would be a military fool to return to his home country. He will establish his capital at Cairo, and will remain there for more than three years. After three years he will receive news that causes him to quickly return to Jerusalem. If a military leader plans to put down his roots for a while, what would be one of his major concerns

? The relationship he has with the rulers of the nations that are on his immediate borders. That is, how sure he is they will not pull a surprise attack on him. So, through the prestigious position he has gained in the eyes of the Islamic world by this time, it will allow him to use the terrorist groups, already in Sudan and Libya, to overthrow their leaders, and in their place to install two of his stooges, where they will remain in control for some three years. He will already have plucked up the ruler of Lebanon, and replaced him with a stooge.

It will surprise me if Lebanon, Sudan, and Libya are among the countries from which his stooges will rule.

“At his steps” means “companionship” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance & Wilson’s O.T. Word Studies). This expression also appears in Judges 4:10, where it appears as “at his feet.”

Judges 4:10 – And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him.

It represents an Old Testament word picture of a conquered leader or country laying yearly tribute payments before the king of the conquering country, who is setting on his throne, and the tribute is being placed at his feet on the steps leading up to his throne. So I believe the antichrist will place his puppet rulers on the thrones of Lebanon, Syria, and Sudan as those who are in “companionship” with him.

For more than three years, with the Suez Canal under his control, he will gain worldwide recognition and acclaim in his capital city of Cairo.

Israel will be trapped in the Negev for more than three years (See previous updates), and stability will have come to the troubled Middle East. He will supposedly have done what all nations say they are seeking, that is, brought stability to the Middle East. But, between the third and fourth year of his rule, something will cause him to quickly head for Jerusalem.

Chirac retracts Remarks on Iran Threat

French President Jacques Chirac said in an interview with three newspapers that Iran’s possession of a nuclear bomb would not be “very dangerous” and that if it used the weapon on Israel, Teheran would be immediately “razed,” according to a newspaper report.

However, Chirac – who made the comments during a Monday interview with The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune and Le Nouvel Observateur, a weekly magazine – called reporters back the next day to try to have his quotes retracted.

In an article posted on its Web site Wednesday night, the New York Times said the Monday interview was tape recorded and on the record.

Chirac’s initial remarks would mark a big departure from France’ s official policy of deterrence and work in preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapon

“I should rather have paid attention to what I was saying and understood that perhaps I was on the record,” Chirac said in the second interview on Tuesday, according to the New York Times.

On Monday, Chirac said of Iran and its nuclear program: “I would say that what is dangerous about this situation is not the fact of having a nuclear bomb. Having one or perhaps a second bomb a little later, well, that’s not very dangerous.”

Instead, Chirac said, the danger lay in the chances of proliferation or an arms race in the Middle East should Iran build a nuclear bomb. Possessing the weapon would be useless for Iran – whose leader has called for Israel to be “wiped off the map” – as using it would mean an instant counterattack.

“Where will it drop it, this bomb? On Israel?” Chirac asked. “It would not have gone 200 meters into the atmosphere before Teheran would be razed.”

In the second interview with the same newspapers, Chirac retracted his comment about Teheran being razed.

“I retract it, of course, when I said, ‘One is going to raze Teheran,”‘ he said.

Chirac also said other countries would stop any bomb launched by Iran from reaching its target.

“It is obvious that this bomb, at the moment it was launched, obviously would be destroyed immediately,” he said. “We have the means – several countries have the means to destroy a bomb.”

Regarding his comments that Israel could be a target of an Iranian weapon and that Israel would retaliate, Chirac said: “I don’t think I spoke about Israel yesterday. Maybe I did so but I don’t think so.

I have no recollection of that.”

Iran Schools Feed Pupils “War Curriculum”

Iran’s schools are nurturing a siege mentality in children with textbooks showing preparations for war and depicting Israel and the West as the enemy, the Israel-based Center for Monitoring the Impact of Peace (CMIP) said on Tuesday.
