The New Iraqi Strategy, due to be announced next week, based on the ongoing political and military appointments, does indeed seemed to be heading toward one last attempt for some kind of limited victory which, if it does not show signs of being successful, will be followed by orderly withdrawal of U.S. forces. 2007 appears to be the year of destiny for predicting events of future years based on decisions made during it.

It appears we are on the verge of attempting one last charge, hoping for some kind of victory that might allow us to leave an Iraqi trained force, which could fend off the terrorist guerillas and Iranian Shiite attempts to take over the current government, and prevent an Islamic Republic from being formed in its stead. I do not think a democratic government can be maintained more than a year after we do withdraw, but am not going to criticize our government for making the attempt, hoping that I am wrong in what I have stated.

I was part of the large military force that came under constant criticism for not being able to bring home a decisive victory against guerilla warfare in Vietnam, but we kept on fighting and trying to pull it off. I cannot be critical of my comrades in arms who are now trying to pull it off in Iraq. Inability to obtain a victory for what is right and just is not failure, but failing to try to do so is the pentacle of failure.

DEBKAfile Reports: Bush’s military shakeup ahead of Iraqi policy shift places US command in fighting stance for possible confrontation with Iran and Syria

The new Iraq strategy which the US president is due to unveil next week – and is geared to victory rather than exit – could bring US troops into clashes with Iran and/or Syria in the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Sea or the eastern Mediterranean.

Democratic leaders Senate leader Harry Reid and Speaker Nancy Pelosi are urging the US president to reject US troop increases in Iraq and opt for redeployment.

On the military side, Gen.

David Petraeus, who compiled a new U.S. military manual on fighting insurgencies, with stress on understanding local norms, succeeds Gen.

George Casey in command of American forces in Iraq.

In Washington, retired Admiral Mike McConnell takes over as director of national intelligence replacing John Negroponte who becomes deputy secretary

of state.

Both nominations are subject to Senate approval.

Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad is due to head the US mission to the United Nations, making way in Baghdad for Ryan Crocker, ambassador in Pakistan. Crocker, an Arabic speaker, has headed US embassies in Lebanon, Syria and Kuwait and was deputy to Negroponte during his stint as US ambassador in Baghdad.

2nd Persian Gulf U.S. Naval Buildup in Four Months!

It would appear that the U.S. Naval buildup, which was associated with the ending of the Hizbollah-Israel Conflict, is continuing. The primary purpose of this buildup would be to cover two contingencies: (1) Quick backup reaction if the planned increase in U.S. land troops does not lead to signs of eventual victory, and they appear to suddenly be in need of quick backup air and marine forces to hold their positions, or (2) If it becomes apparent that U.S. forces cannot bring the guerilla terrorist forces under control, then the firepower and airpower of the naval forces will be used to allow a uniform organized manner of withdrawal by the U.S. forces.

I have never seen the Middle East and worldwide policy in such a state of flux, with no nation, except perhaps Iran, seeming to know quite what to do next. The Democratically controlled Congress will put up a fight on troop increases in Iraq, and the Israeli Prime Minister is up to his armpits in alligators.

Whoever wins the 2008 election for President will inherit the biggest mass of confusion in the United States and across the remainder of this planet that has ever existed in the history of mankind. I am certainly likely to go on

to be with the Lord during the term of the next President, because I will be near 80 when it ends, and I am indeed looking forward to a soon departure from this earthly mess. However, I do feel guilty in leaving my three generations of offspring behind in this boiling cauldron of confusion and evil, even though I know my being here will not help, because there is nothing I can do to help them or the world situation. And, in all honesty, I know the same Lord, who gave me a wonderful wife, brought me through two wars, helped my wife raise seven children when I was on assignment or later on in revival, and kept me 33 years as the pastor of Dardanelle MBC, will also bring them through whatever lies ahead for them.

So, when the bell tolls for me, sing no sad songs

for me, only for yourself, in that you are going to have to wait for a catching out from this maze of real confusion, while I already am waiting in heaven for you.

DEBKAfile: Two new steps taken by President Bush support the revised Iraq strategy under development in the White House

The US president has decided to shift John Negroponte out of the job

of National Intelligence Director after 20 months and appoint him deputy secretary of state, as weighty backup for Condoleezza Rice. The USS John C.

Stennis strike group will this month join the USS Dwight Eisenhower aircraft carrier group and USS Boxer strike force in the Persian Gulf “as a warning to Syria and Iran” in face of acts seen as provocative, and to give commanders more flexibility in the region. Continuation of Iran’s banned nuclear activities would come under the heading of “provocative.”

This is the second buildup of US naval, air and marine strength in the strategic waterway in four months. Deployment of the Stennis group puts a total of 16,000 US sailors in the region as well as another nuclear carrier and 7 escort warships, 10 air squadrons, 2 submarines and helicopters to support amphibious landings on enemy soil.

DEBKAfile’s military experts see in the new deployment evidence that President George W. Bush has rejected the key Baker-Hamilton Iraq Study Group’s recommendation to engage Iran and Syria, for an exit strategy on Iraq. He has instead come down finally behind his own fundamental conviction that the Iraq war is winnable and Iran can be simultaneously confronted.

This grave charge is tantamount to flouting the commander in chief’s directives. Reports of Casey’s coming dismissal are further evidence of Bush’s resolve to pursue a proactive policy on Iraq and Iran rather than accept defeat.

Being retired from the military, I pray daily for out men and women in harm’s way, having paid my dues in Vietnam. I do understand what they are going through, and what it means to be fighting in a country when the majority of the American public wants to pull us out and bring us home. I support our troops 100 percent and love them for the job they are doing. I love my Commander-in-Chief, President George Bush, and was 100 percent behind what he did when he issued the order to invade Iraq.

But I was never in favor of our staying and attempting to turn Iraq into a democracy, because I believed long before we went into Iraq that a lasting democracy could not be established prior to the Second Advent of Christ.

I was always in favor of going in, capturing or killing Saddam and his cronies and, when this had been done, getting out in a pre-planned, protected withdrawal, in order to let other Arab countries know it would happen to them if they became a world military threat. My President is an honorable man, and I have no criticism of him or his actions. I pray that God will lead him and he will follow, as God leads

him in the most difficult two years he has ever faced. He desperately needs the prayers of us all, regardless of political party affiliation.

A Change in the Patriotic Heart of Israel

We routinely issue one or two BLOGs daily, and Specials as the Middle East situation merits!

I have loved Israel for most of my life because I believe they are God’s chosen people.

During my tenures in the Middle East over the past 54 years I have watched a change in the heart of the Jewish public. They h ave gone through much

adversity and, up until 1973, that adversity had molded them into a very patriotic nation. Listening to their tank commander’s chatter during the 1967 brief war was a great lesson in the devotion its soldiers had in their determination to defend Israel to the death.

I noticed a decline in the patriotic attitude of Israel after the 1973 war and, during my numerous excursions as a civilian to Israel after my graduation from the MBS and ATU, I observed an acceleration in the confusion, uncertainty, and lack of confidence the people exhibited in their public assessment of their government officials in general. There were at times, during some administrations, brief revivals of the type of patriotic zeal shown by the founding fathers up to 1973 but, after Ariel Sharon was no longer able to lead the country, things have dramatically headed downhill internally up to the present time. Israel has enough external problems to keep her fully occupied, and I believe the added internal lack of confidence in her government will be able to tip the balance in favor of Islam during the coming war.

Please read the two articles from the Jerusalem Post which follow, and then the continuation of what I have been presenting up to this point.

The following January 4, 2007 excerpt from an article by Herb Keinon in the Jerusalem Post, titled “Public View of Sharon changes a Year after his Stroke,” outlines the internal lack of confidence Israel now has in the moral fiber and ability of its government to make decisions.

One of the major changes the year wrought was that it is now difficult for the average citizen to look at the various institutions that form the building blocks of this society with much confidence.

Nearly every institution has been tainted: the presidency, by the Katsav scandal; the Prime Minister’s Office, by various allegations of scandals there; the Knesset, by its day-to-day behavior; the IDF, by its shoddy performance during the summer’s war; the Justice Ministry, by Haim Ramon’s kiss and its aftermath; the Rabbinate, by the low public standing of Israel’s two chief rabbis; the police, by the Benny Sela escape; and now the tax authorities.”

The following January 3, 2007 article from the Jerusalem Post by the JP Staff, titled “77% of Israelis dissatisfied with Olmert,” statistically shows the internal lack of confidence in the administration.

“According to a poll taken by the Dahaf Institute for the Knesset Channel, 77 percent of Israelis are dissatisfied with Olmert’s performance as prime minister.

Forty seven percent of the 420 respondents asked to grade Olmert on his performance gave the prime minister a grade of “very poor,” 30% gave him a grade of “fairly bad,” and 20% graded him as “good.” Only one percent thought Olmert was doing a “very good” job.

Only one percent of those asked responded that they think Olmert’s performance has been “very good.”

In addition, 69% of the survey participants said that the prime minister’s leadership skills are not good, and 60% have a low opinion of Olmert’s integrity.

To the question, “How would you rate Olmert’s resilience under pressure?” 62% of the respondents said he does not deal with pressure well, while 37% believe Olmert deals well under pressure.

Asked what would change their opinion of the prime minister, 45% said their appreciation of the prime minister would improve if he would remove Defense Minister Amir Peretz from his post.

Only four percent said they would not appreciate such a move.

Fifty-one percent of the respondents said Peretz’s dismissal would not affect their judgment of the prime minister.

Twenty percent said they would like Olmert to dismiss IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz, as opposed to six percent of participants who said firing the army chief would decrease their appreciation for the PM.”

My praise is not in the letter of the law given to man by God through the man Moses, but of His Son given to man, who kept perfectly every jot and tittle of the Law, and then sacrificed himself for my inability to perfectly keep it, saving me by the grace that is in Jesus through God.

I try to keep God’s commandments perfectly, but I fail daily, so my faith is in the only man who ever kept it all, my Savior, the man Christ Jesus, and God forgives me of my sins through the grace in his Son.

I understand Paul’s answer to his own question, after he cried out to God, confessing thanksgiving to the Son who saved him.

Romans 7:24,25 – O wretched man that I am!

who shall deliver me from the body of this death? [25] I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Did God forgive Paul daily when he confessed he served the law of sin with the flesh?

I John 1:8,9 – If we say that

we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is

not in us. [9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

The oil revenue money from Iran flows directly from Iran via Hizbollah in Lebanon to Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, as well as from Iran via Damascus to Hamas in the West Bank, and from Iran via Egypt to the Gaza Strip through the Sinai border crossing.

The two articles which follow show some of the frustration the Iranian money flow is producing in Israel.

Exclusive: Hizbullah paying terrorists for Kassam attacks

Hizbullah is paying Palestinian splinter groups “thousands of dollars” for each Kassam rocket fired at the western Negev, The Jerusalem Post has learned.

According to Israeli intelligence information, Hizbullah is smuggling cash into the Gaza Strip and paying “a number of unknown local splinter groups” for each attack.

Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) sources said the Islamist organization paid several thousand dollars for each attack, with the amount dependent on the number of Israelis killed or wounded.

“We know that Hizbullah is involved in funding terrorist acti

vity in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank,” a security official said.

“Palestinian terrorists get thousands of dollars per attack. Sometimes they are paid before the attack and sometimes they submit a bill to Lebanon afterward and the money gets transferred a short while later.”

According to the officials, while Islamic Jihad was behind most recent rocket attacks – including the one on Tuesday night that critically wounded 14-year-old Adir Basad in Sderot – several splinter terrorists groups are also involved and have received direct funding from Hizbullah.

According to security officials, Islamic Jihad gets the money via its headquarters in Damascus while Fatah’s Tanzim terror group and the Popular Resistance Committees receive payment from Hizbullah in Lebanon.

All of the money originated in Iran, the officials said.

Government officials said Hamas was not currently involved in firing missiles, but was doing nothing to stop those who were.

Also Wednesday, the IDF Operations Directorate relayed new orders to the Southern Command following Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s decision earlier in the day to permit the army to once again target Kassam rocket cells.

This decision came after a meeting Olmert held with Defense Minister Amir Peretz, Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh, and other senior security officials.

Following the meeting, the Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement saying that in light of the increase of rocket attacks, despite the cease-fire, “an instruction was given to the security forces to take pinpointed action against the launching cells.”

At the same time, the statement said, Israel would continue to observe the cease-fire and to work with the Palestinian Authority to get it to take immediate action to stop the firing of the rockets.

Peretz told the cabinet on Sunday that there have been cases over the last month where the IDF spotted terrorists preparing to fire rockets, but – because of the cease-

fire – did not act. The new policy would put an end to that situation.

In the past two weeks, OC Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Yoav Galant has recommended taking much more extensive action inside Gaza to stop the rocket fire, but on Wednesday – according to government sources – he was resigned to accepting the new policy.

According to the IDF, troops will not be allowed to operate inside the Palestinian Authority except when provided precise intelligence concerning a specific Kassam rocket cell.

According to government officials, Olmert argued at Wednesday’s meeting that the cease-fire had strategic value, and that Israel’s policy of restraint had earned it “a lot of understanding and appreciation” around the world that would provide “leeway” in the future.

Israel, according to officials in Olmert’s office, can afford to continue to observe the “overall parameters” of the cease-fire, and can always take more forceful action down

the line.

These officials also said that even when Israel did employ more force in Gaza it was unable to stop the rocket fire, and that the 64 rockets that have fallen during the monthlong cease-fire were only one-quarter of the number of rockets fired in the month preceding the agreement.

Olmert has argued in recent days that a strong military response would only unite Hamas and Fatah.

Islamic Jihad spokesman Abu Hamza alluded to this when he expressed the hope that renewed fighting with Israel would help end internal Palestinian violence in the Gaza Strip.

A Kassam rocket hit near Sderot after the security meeting. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility, with Abu Hamza saying it was a response to Israel’s arrest of operatives in the West Bank, which is not covered by the cease-fire.

According to the new orders, the IDF is allowed to fire at Kassam cells before and after they launch rockets at Israel. The rules of engagement are dependant on intelligence, primarily on the location of the cell and whether there is a possibility that Palestinian civilians would be harmed.

Terrorists often use urban areas to launch sites the rockets.

“We are aware of the sensitivity of the situation,” said an officer in the Southern Command. “We do not want to cause diplomatic problems.”

According to the officer, the IDF is also allowed to target Kassam launchers if no people are present. Based on the government decision, the IDF will continue to refrain from targeting Kassam workshops and will only fire at people if they are “ticking bombs” – terrorists on their way to, or in the midst of, an attack. Armed gunmen who approach the Gaza security fence were also, the officer said, legitimate targets.

“When there is a danger, we will not stand idly by but will open fire,” he said. The IDF plans to utilize the air force to target the Kassam cells and launchers.

“The terrorists need to feel like they are being hunted,” said one officer. “We intend to make that happen.”

Palestinian Rocket Crews in Gaza Target Israeli Officials

Abu Hamza, the spokesman for a militant Palestinian group which regularly fires rockets into southern Israel, said Tuesday: “We are going to continue. Only today we fired seven rockets.”

“We’re still working on precision,” said Abu Jandal, spokesman for another group.

“We always hope to hit barracks.”

Most Islamic nations in the Middle East have reached the conclusion that war is inevitable between Israel and the Iran, Syria, and Lebanon threesome.

In the end seven other Islamic entities will join with this threesome to attack Israel in a vicious Jihad, but Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt will not be among the seven as I indicated in the following quotes from Archive Prophecy Update Number 46, December 14, 2001, and Number 32, September 5, 2001. The Antichrist will bypass Jordan and conquer Egypt, as shown in Number 46. Number 32 indicates all that Saudi Arabia and Europe will do is protest his actions.

The moderate Islamic nations with ties to the United States believe the Middle East is about to explode,

and they are all trying to ride the fence without taking a positive position on either side, hoping they will be in good shape no matter who wins after the explosion. The Jerusalem Post article, which follows Prophecy Updates 46 and 32, gives a perspective of how this jockeying for post-war position is being heightened by some three million Muslims in their annual pilgrimage to Mecca, while they mingle with citizens from the many different countries.

The ancient boil of conflict between the descendants of Jacob, Ishmael, and the six sons of Keturah, with all its internal blend of impurities, is finally coming to a head in the Middle East. The current drastic rise in the conflict between the Palest

inians and Israelis will, in the end, be the catalyst that brings a temporary false peace between them. The reasons for this false peace have been outlined thoroughly in the last five prophecy updates.

The apparently genuine peace will be shattered suddenly by a rapid blitzkrieg attack from the north by Syria. In league with Syria will be Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan.

I feel very confident of all but the last two named, and it could well be two other countries in the Middle East.

Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran will move rapidly southward through the “glorious land” of Israel like a fast moving thunderstorm, bypassing the land where the people of Moab, Ammon, and Edom were settled when Daniel wrote his prophecies in about 600 B.C. The descendants of Edom (Jacob’s brother), and Ammon and Moab (the sons of Lot), as found on every published map for this time period, were settled immediately to the southeast, east, and northeast of the Dead Sea, precisely in the country we know as Jordan today. Hence, we can know the antichrist will bypass Jordan when he moves south through Israel.

Why would he bypass Jordan? Jordan has no strategic, political, or economic advantage to offer him, but the Suez Canal and Egypt do, so he will head southwest toward that area after having driven the woman Israel into the Negev Wilderness south of Beersheba.

Revelation 12:6 – And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

We concluded Prophecy Update Number 31 with an exposition of Ezekiel 38:12, which has been done continuously from Ezekiel 37:1. We will now continue this exposition, beginning with Ezekiel 38:13.

Ezekiel 38:13 – Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil

? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?

Verse 13 mentions three other descendants which were not mentioned previously as being among the horde that attacked Israel, namely, Sheba, Dedan, and Tarshish.

Sheba and Dedan settled in the land we know as Saudi Arabia, later colonizing across the Red Sea in the horn we know today as Ethiopia. Tarshish is much harder to nail down to a specific location.

The descendants of Tarshish were sea merchants who became the peoples of the Mediterranean Sea coast. The headquarters of the descendants of Tarshish is now generally accepted by most biblical authorities as a district in the south of Spain where the city of Tartessus once existed. The merchants of Tarshish scattered their descendants in village settlements along most of the coastal sections of Europe.

I am persuaded that Europe represents the descendant offspring of Tarshish. It is quite possible that God may look upon the rest of Western Civilization as being the offspring (descendants) of Europe (“the young lions thereof”). The countries of the New World became the “melting pot” of Europe. It is very interesting what Saudi Arabia, Europe, and the rest of Western Civilization have to say to Gog about his attack on Israel: “Art thou come to take a spoil? Hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? To carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?” This is no more or less than the perfect description of a diplomatic protest to Gog’s actions. When the anti-Christ and his armies roar south into Israel in a blitzkrieg lightning strike, the rest of the free world will protest, protest, protest – and do nothing about it. The anti-Christ will take Jerusalem within four days of his initial strike in the north, and within three weeks most of Israel will have fled into the Negev south of Beersheva, where she will remain for some three and one-half years. Jerusalem will fall and only one-third of Israel’s population will make it safely into the Negev.

Zechariah 13:8 to 14:2 – And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

Iran seeks to use the haj for political gain

As the eyes of Muslims worldwide are directed toward Mecca – where ceremonies of the haj are held prior to Id al-Adha – Saudi authorities are busy working to maintain the safety of the worshipers on every stage of the pilgrimage to avoid repetition of accidents that occurred in past years due to excessive crowds.

However, this year the caretakers in Saudi Arabia are concerned more about a different kind of threat – specifically attempts by Iran to cause disturbances.

Saudi Interior Minister Prince Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz said this week that the kingdom has completed preparations against acts of violence.

“We will not allow any damage to the pilgrims and confront firmly and decisively any attempt to hinder the atmosphere of the haj,”Abdulaziz said.

On Thursday, nearly three million Muslims from around the world, chanting “I am here, Lord” and raising their hands to heaven, marched through a desert valley outside Mecca in the first day of the haj.

Dressed in seamless white robes symbolizing the equality of mankind under God, the pilgrims hiked through the 13-kilometer valley to Mina, starting a series of rituals in which they cleanse themselves of sin.

Prominent Saudi columnist Abdelrahman Alrashed, in his column entitled “Watch the Pilgrimage” published in the respected Alsharq Alawsat newspaper, expressed fear of disturbances initiated by Iran and its supporters during the ceremonies, “as Teheran did in 1987 and 1989, when demonstrations and acts of violence took place in Mecca under Iranian inspiration.”

Alrashed, a close associate of the Saudi royal family, warns of another Iranian attempt to use the religious ceremonies for political gain and concludes the article that “we stand on the verge of confrontation in a place crowded by two million people that could happen if the Muslim world does not take a firm stand to warn Iran and her supporters not to perpetuate a stupid act that will be considered an act of violence against a large army of Muslims.”

These words shed a new light on the surprising declaration by Saudi King Abdullah at the recent opening ceremony of the Gulf summit hosted in Riyadh.

The Saudi monarch referred to the situation in Iraq, Lebanon and the PA and warned that the Middle East is about to explode.

Observers say that since his swearing in on August 2005, Abdullah has been conducting a foreign policy with a close eye on the frequent changes in the region.

Saudi Arabia has identified the increased role played by Iran in the region, led by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The king does not react to the developments slowly, observers say.

Saudi Arabia is concerned by Iran’s growing influence in the Gulf, its involvement in Iraq and Lebanon, and above all, the Iranian nuclear program.

Saudi Arabia is increasingly involved in Iraq in support and coordination with the US. The king’s adviser for national security Prince Bandar Bin Sultan plays an important role in coordinating between Riyadh and Washington on the Iranian issue, say Arab diplomats in the Gulf.

The same sources emphasize that Bandar took the place of the recently retired Saudi ambassador to Washington, Prince Turki Alfaysal, and visits the American capital constantly to express his country’s concern of the increased Iranian influence in the region that might lead to a possible change in the balance of power between Shi’ites and Sunnis in the region.

Saudi Arabia is concerned that Iran aspires to establish a Shi’ite state in Iraq and that the Iranian growing influence in Lebanon and Teheran’ s activity in the Pale

stinian arena, would have destructive consequences on the stability of the region, and pose direct threat to the kingdom.

For pilgrims streaming in from all continents, the haj is a crowning moment of faith, a duty for all able-bodied Muslims to carry out at least once. On Thursday morning, as they have for the past few days, hundreds of thousands opened their pilgrimage by circling the Kaaba, the black cubic stone in Mecca, Islam’s holiest site.

“For us it is a vacation away from work and daily life to renew yourself spiritually,” said Ahmed Karkoutly, an American doctor from Brownsville, Texas. “You feel you part of a universe fulfilling God’s will. It’s a cosmic motion, orbiting the Kaaba.”
