While a member of the USAF Branch of the National Security Agency, I watched with great interest the building of the Negev into a huge, widely stretched, cleverly concealed, militarily linked, war contingency zone, to be used for evacuation of Israel citizens, should Israel be attacked from the north by a successful Arab invasion.
As a believer of the Scripture, I knew that Israel would eventually have to flee before a lightening Jihad, even though they had been able to win victories over the Arabs in 1948, 1956, and 1967. I retired as a synoptic analyst in 1971.
In 1973, Israel once again defeated the Arab forces. These victories have given Israelis an air of invincibility in their ability to easily defeat any Arab invasion. But they have never experienced an invasion of a united Islamic Jihad involving 10 Arab nations, which is what I believe they will see at some point in time between 2007 and 2012, and it will drive Israel into the Negev.
Archive Prophecy Update Numbers 5 to 12 give a history of the great preparation of the Negev for a War Contingency Evacuation Area.
The information which follows our introduction was extracted from a letter written by Jewish Nation Fund (JNF) President Ronald Lauder. It appeared in several Jewish publications. It is an extract from the first part of the letter.

Since that time we have been very careful to watch fur ther developments in
the vast Negev of Israel, and have issued many follow up Prophecy Updates on the Negev and its continuing. Every nation has a war contingency plan. And, the smaller the country, the more imperative the requirement for a detailed war contingency evacuation plan. Israel began to formulate, plan, and build her evacuation area in the early fifties.
She chose the only reasonable zone, the Negev wilderness. The Negev comprises more than one-third of the total land area of Israel, beginning just north of Beersheva, and extending all the way southward to the Gulf of Aqaba.
Why was the Negev the only reasonable area? From the historical prospective, the majority of Israel’s major conquerors have come down from the north.
Even Nebuchadnezzar, whose great empire began to the east of Israel in Babylonia, first went northwest through southern Syria to eventually attack Israel from the north. Once Israel had signed a peace treaty with Egypt, and then with Jordan, it became evident to her political and military leaders, that they had been correct in selecting the Negev. At present, it appears very unlikely that an attack will be made against Israel from any zone other than the Syria-Lebanon area.
Some minister, no one knows who, during the early part of the last century, visited Petra in Jordan, and formed an erroneous opinion, which has become very popular among many teachers of prophecy.
Whoever he was, his military training was sadly lacking, for he looked Petra over, and decided it would make a great defensive position for Israel to occupy, that is, if she ever had to flee her homeland.
As a graduate of a military academy, and a retiree from the USAF-NSA, I can assure you, Petra is the worst possible place to evacuate the survivors of a successful Arab attack against Israel. I doubt if the one who first advanced this idea actually walked all the way through Petra’s narrow northern entrance and then continued to walk out on the vast open plain to the southwest.
Petra may have been a great place to defend in biblical times with the weaponry of those days, but it would be impossible to defend today. But there are other compelling reasons why Israel would never flee to Petra. There are no natural water sources in that area, and water collection by its ingenious ancient inhabitants from desert thunderstorms was never able to support a population of more than 20,000.
And food production in the soil horizons of this area could never support the evacuation of one-third of Israel’s population. It is also a certainty that the modern day occupants of Jordan would not offer to help Israel escape the Antichrist. But the belief that Israel will flee to Petra has become so popularized by many prominent ministers, it makes it very difficult to dissuade most followers of prophetic events.
However, the fact that Israel has spent billions and billions of dollars turning the Negev into the most fortified zone on the earth, gives me the growing assurance that this is the place the woman Israel, who is described as going into the wilderness in the 12th Chapter of Revelation, will soon end up for the last three and one-half years of the tribulation period. In the next prophetic updates 6 to 12, Lord willing, I will discuss the military developments that turned the Negev into the best prepared evacuation zone in the world.

A little more than a year ago, Jewish National Fund embarked on a challenge, a long-term vision: developing the Negev into a hospitable, habitable, profitable environment that would become home to an additional 250,000 people.
Blueprint Negev is not a mirage, it is a vision becoming a real
ity with seven new communities created, hundreds of families moved to the Negev, and new job opportunities.
JNF’s Blueprint Negev initiative is essential to Israel’s future. The Negev represents 60% of Israel’s landmass, but only 8% of its population lives there. Overcrowding and a strain on resources in the center of the country 92% of Israel’s population resides on 40 % of Israel’s land further underscore the importance of this plan. Additionally, there are an estimated 170,000 Bedouin in the Negev whose population is expected to double in the next seven years. But their educational and medical standards are very low and unemployment hovers at 90%. Opening up the Negev economically will positively impact their future as well. This is a vision for all of Israel.
Blueprint Negev builds on the extensive work already achieved by KKL/JNF. Over 30 JNF reservoirs already in the Negev translate into 10 billion gallons of water. In Beersheva, new housing and large parks are being built. Together with the Beersheva Foundation, KKL/JNF and the Or Movement are creating a $300 million consortium of projects that will transform Beersheva into a bustling metropolis.
JNF, together with the Or Movement, has established the Negev Central Information Center, which gathers up-to-date data on communities, job opportunities, housing, and education.
Already, 10,000 names of Israelis interested in moving to the Negev are in our central database and we have identified 960 new employment opportunities in the Negev. Today, our vision is turning into a reality.
Blueprint Negev allows us to be 21st century pioneers and to once again be part of a nation under creation. Twenty-five communities are planned; seven are already established. Residents of Sansana, Harouv, Shomria, Givot Bar, Be’er Milka, Kmehin, and Merhav Am, the newly established communities, give testament to these ideals. Our Economic Development Fund helps them finance the move. Our involvement shows our partnership.
Blueprint Negev answers the need for Jews in the Diaspora looking to make aliyah the pioneering way. Nefesh B’Nefesh has been very successful in bringing highly qualified North American immigrants to Israel, yet many settle in established communities, seeking an English-speaking population. We are working with them to set up English-speaking communities in the Negev, such as Carmit, and allow the Diaspora Jew to change the quality of life and image of the Negev. It doesn’t get more pioneering than that.
At Ramon Air Force Base, whose home is already in the Negev, congregations across the U.S. are participating in a $10 million initiative to build a central park with a 3,000-seat amphitheatre and recycled water reservoirs.

Together with Aleh Negev, we are building a 25-acre, world class, residential rehabilitative village, to provide services to the entire Negev population which suffers from a tremendous shortage of paramedical, therapeutic, and special education services. The Aleh Negev project will serve as home to more than 200 adults with disabilities meeting their needs throughout their lives and will serve an additional 12,000 disabled children and young adults each year as outpatients. This project, situated near Ofaqim, will bring 3,000 new jobs to the area.
