As I reported in the last BLOG, Syrian Interior Minister Major General Ghazi Kanaan supposedly committed suicide in his office Wednesday.

He was buried the next day on Thursday, which brings to memory all the murder mysteries I have watched on television that had the wife who poisoned her husband anxious to get the body covered by dirt as soon as possible.

He had been questioned some three weeks earlier by UN investigators probing the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri.

Kanaan supposedly shot himself with his own revolver.

Kenaan was Syria’s top man in Lebanon for 20 years before becoming the Syria Interior Minister. Syria has been very nervous about the UN investigation uncovering complicity in the upper echelons of the Syrian government, perhaps even implicating President Bashar Assad and his relatives.

We will never know if his suicide was voluntary or involuntary, but it did indeed come at a very convenient time for Assad and his rel

atives in high places.

The UN Investigation of the Hariri assassination, when it is released, may, or may not, blame Syria, but I believe Assad, and those in high places, not knowing what would be the case, are involved in the death of Kanaan. I do not believe they could take a chance.

A UN investigation team is so politically motivated in investigating anything, it is impossible to predict with any certainty what they will report. They may, or may not, report Syria as being involved in Hariri’s death. If it does not find much blame attached to Syria, Assad and his many other cronies will scream out “I told you so.” But if it does find they were in some way responsible for the assassination, then there will be a long line of Syrian officials crying out, “we knew nothing, Kenaan did it all by himself.” I am certainly reminded of the Gillette razor commercial of my youth, “Push-Pull-Click-Click – Change blades that quick,” and the famous remark of the Hogan’s Heroes TV series by German Sergeant Schultz’s perpetual statement, “I know nothing.”

President Assad may weather this storm, but I do not think he will last another two years in office.

I strongly suspect that the number two power man in Syria committed involuntary suicide. He was most likely given the same choice the great Field Marshal Rommel was given when Hitler discovered he was one of the generals involved in an attempt on his life.

Rommel had to choose between sacrificing all his family and relatives or, taking his own life by his own hand. I believe that is the choice Syrian Interior Minister Ghazi Kenaan faced on Tuesday in Damascus. Shortly before he supposedly committed suicide, Christian Radio Lebanon aired an interview with Kenaan, taped on Monday. Kenaan was for many years the chief of all Syrian military intelligence in Lebanon and, as such, was interviewed in connection with the murder of Lebanese leader Rafiq Hariri in advance of the UN investigation team’s report, which is due soon for release. At the close of the Christian Radio’s interview, he concluded by saying: “This is my last statement” – And indeed it was!

Kenaan has been a tower of strength in the Assad regime from the beginning of the iron fisted rule of Bashar Assad’s father, Hafez, who maintained rule by brute force for many years. Kenaan supposedly committed suicide just hours before Bashar Assad appeared on a CNN interview.

Instead of the “buck” stopping at the desk of President Bashar Assad, I strongly suspect that Bashar choose to have it stop at the desk of Ghazi Kenaan. I hardly think that Kenaan carried out the Hariri assassination without the full approval of Assad. Knowing the corruption and ineffectiveness of the United Nations, who knows what their final report will contain on the murder of Hariri, but I do not believe Assad was willing to take a chance, and Syrian officials may have already pointed the arrow toward Kenaan in their interviews by UN representatives.

Bashar Assad is desperate to relieve some of the international pressure being put on him from many different fronts for several different areas of Syria’s domestic and foreign actions

and policies, particularly from the United States. I believe the death of Kenaan was arranged in the event the UN Report, soon to be released, casts any degree of blame on Assad.

If the report does, Kenaan will likely be the prepared sacrificial goat for Assad on which he lays the blame for all his sins in the entire affair, while Assad escapes into the wilderness of international politics. If the report does happen to be favorable to Syria, then all they have sacrificed is the number two rubber plant.

I do confess that the use of Leviticus 16:7-10 was in no way biblically meant to have any connection with Assad or Kenaan, but it does illustrate my point – Assad being the scapegoat set free, and Kenaan

being the sacrificed goat.

Leviticus 16:7-10 – And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. [8] And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the Lord, and the other

lot for the scapegoat. [9] And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the Lord’s lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering. [10] But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.

Jesus pictures both the sacrificial goat and the scapegoat. He took all my sins in his own body on the tree and died for me as my sacrificial goat and, as my scapegoat he arose from the dead without sin, having already forever carried them as far from me as east is from west. He lives in me as my eternal intercessor, and will never impute any sin to me that would place me back under the condemnation of God!

and gave himself for me.

I was delighted to see the article by Daniel Wachs in Ha’aretz, which follows this preamble. I have taught for some 30 years in four books that the earth will move in the Jordan Rift Valley in Israel during the great tribulation period. I do not know if the satellite picture of the rift will transpose onto THE BLOG.

This valley is the valley in which I believe the first and last great quakes in Revelation 6:12 and 16:18,19 will occur, as I have taught for 30 years.

Have No doubt: The Earth Will Move

The earthquake in Pakistan (7.6 on the Richter Scale with an epicenter 90 kilometers from Islamabad) represents a warning of what may happen in Israel.

In comparison, an earthquake in November, 1995, not far from Israel and only a few dozen kilometers south of Eilat, measured 7.2. This indicates that a major earthquake (7 or higher) may well occur along the entire length of the Arava Fault and the Jordan Valley Rift.

In the region where Israel is located, a strong earthquake takes place on average every 80 years. In California, an earthquake of this magnitude takes place on average every 20 years, and due to heightened awareness of the risks involved in a quake, all new buildings in the last 35 years have been c

onstructed according to strict standards, and older buildings were demolished or reinforced. Only a few hundred individuals lost their lives during all of the earthquakes in California in the last few decades. In Turkey, Iran, and Armenia, where seismic activity resembles that in California, such protective construction measures were not adopted, and tens of thousands of people died, aside from massive property damage.

The last earthquake in Israel’s seismic region that caused significant damage to life and property took place in 1927. It measured 6.2 and its epicenter was in the northern Dead Sea. Several hundred people were killed, mainly in Nablus, Ramle, and Lod. In 1837,

there was a stronger earthquake here (estimated magnitude of 7) with an epicenter north of the Sea of Galilee. Thousands were killed, the Jewish Quarter of Safed was destroyed (1,800 deaths), and Tiberias, Nablus, and dozens of small villages in the Galilee region sustained severe damage.

In 1759, an earthquake in southern Lebanon (estimated at 7.5) caused the deaths of tens of thousands of people and did severe damage in southern Lebanon and the Upper Galilee region.

The 1837 and 1927 earthquakes also caused severe damage far from the epicenter because of reactions in geological infrastructure, resulting in increased ground movement under certain conditions. Most major cities in the Coastal Plain are now located on underlying rocky land masses, which are expected to increase ground movement in an earthquake, and many of their structures were not built to withstand an earthquake. Unless they are reinforced, an earthquake stronger than 6.5 is expected to cause these buildings to collapse. It is now 80 years after the last intermediate quake in 1927 and 170 years after the last major quake in 1837.

There seems to very little sand remaining in the hourglass. Still, we refuse to face the danger that awaits us.

In Turkey, until a 7.5 earthquake on August 17, 1999 killed 12,000 people, wounded tens of thousands and left 200,000 homeless, the nation’ s attention focu

sed on security issues.

As a result of that earthquake, Turkey’s priorities have changed and major resources and funds have been diverted to minimizing potential earthquake damage.

President of Pakistan General Pervez Musharraf called the earthquake that took place on Saturday “the largest natural disaster which has occurred in the history of the nation.” It is fair to assume that territorial concerns about Kashmir will take a back seat on the national agenda for at least the next few years.

Al Qaeda Raises Its Head in Gaza

A leaflet distributed in Khan Yunis over the weekend by al-Qaeda’s “Palestine branch” announced that the terrorist group has begun working towards uniting the Muslims under one Islamic state.

The leaflet said the group’s chief goal was to enforce Islamic law in the entire world, and is the latest indication of al-Qaeda’s effort to establish itself in the Gaza Strip after the Israeli withdrawal from the area.

According to Nizar, a resident of Gaza City, some areas in the southern Gaza Strip are already beginning to resemble Afghanistan when it was ruled by the Taliban.

took over an entire area and surrounded it with land mines in order to keep out Egyptian security.

He explained that the al-Qaeda members who penetrated Gaza through the Philadeliphi corridor may have come from this base.

Earthquakes, Pestilence, and Famines

The previous BLOG had an article saying hundreds had died in the 7.6 earthquake between Pakistan and Kashmir, but I indicated I expected the casualties to exceed 4,000. The earthquake has now been raised to a 7.7, so don’t be surprised if it ends up being a 7.8. This is important as there is a logarithmic increase on the intensity scale.

A 7.5 releases the energy equivalent of 160 million tons of TNT, but an 8.0 releases the energy equivalent of 1 billion tons of TNT. The final casualty count may exceed 25 thousand. Well, the “beginning of sorrows” earthquakes are with us, but so is the pestilence and famine.

It may not be the current avian flu virus [A (H5N1)] that mutates to cause a flu pandemic, but sooner or later one will, and the results could be almost as catastrophic as the one in 1918 if we do not have a vaccine in place.

We are not yet in what the Bible calls the tribulation period, but we are, and have been, in a period of time that was to precede it, known as “the beginning of sorrows.” One of the things that was to plague the human race, as it multiplied and space per human on the earth decreased, was pestilence. The word used for “pestilence” in Matthew 24:7 is the Greek word “loimos,” which means “any deadly infectious disorder.” The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is certainly a deadly infectious disorder created by a virus that has mutated into several different types since its discovery, and still there is no cure for it. (Please see Archive Prophecy Update Number 19).

Matthew 24:7,8 –For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be FAMINES, and PESTILENCES, and EARTHQUAKES, in divers places. [8] All these are the beginning of sorrows.

While it is true I believe the virus of HIV is the major pestilence virus referred to in Matthew 24:7, the Scripture has pestilences (plural), and there have been many others in the last century. Among the numerous pestilence virus types affecting the 20th Century were the many different flu producers. Three were able to produce flu virus pandemics between 1918 and 1969. They were as follows:

• 1918-19, “Spanish flu,” [A (H1N1)], caused the highest number of known influenza deaths: more than 500,000 people died in the United States,

and up to 50 million people may have died worldwide.

Many people died within the first few days after infection, and others died of complications later. Nearly half of those who died were young, healthy adults.

Influenza A (H1N1) viruses still circulate today after being introduced again into the human population in the 1970s.

• 1957-58, “Asian flu,” [A (H2N2)], caused about 70,000 deaths in the United States. First identified in China in late February 1957, the Asian flu spread to the United States by June 1957.

• 1968-69, “Hong Kong flu,” [A (H3N2)], caused about 34,000 deaths in the United States.

This virus was first detected in Hong Kong in early 1968 and spread to the United States later that year. Influenza A (H3N2) viruses still circulate today.

Both the 1957-58 and 1968-69 pandemics were caused by viruses containing a combination of genes from a human influenza virus and an avian influenza virus.

I had both the Asian and Hong Kong Flu. My grandmother Drennan had the Spanish Flu in 1918 – it settled in her ears and she completely lost her hearing from it. She was considered to be one of the lucky ones.

Last week a scientific team led by Dr.

Jeffery Taubenberger, chief of the molecular pathology department at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, reported that the 1918 flu virus [A(H1N1)], which killed 50 million people worldwide, was a bird flu that jumped directly to humans.

But, while the 1918 flu virus was highly contagious, so far the current avian flu virus [A (H5N1)] has shown little ability to spread from person to person. However, mutation of the virus could suddenly set the stage for a world pandemic.

One concern about the avian flu virus is that it has become widespread, kill ing millions of birds

in 11 countries, widely dispensing itself among migratory birds, able to carry it for great distances.

It was reported on Saturday in birds in Romania and Turkey. It is widespread among birds across Asia, and has persisted in this area where it first emerged in 1997.

Based on the last century, we are overdue for a flu pandemic, but no one can be sure which virus will mutate to produce it.

Pandemics occur when a flu virus changes so radically from previous strains that people have no immunity, and vast numbers become ill. Perhaps the most troubling thing about [A (H5N1)] is that it has not gone away, and has shown some warning signs of mutation.

Even though it has not affected many humans so far, when it does it is quite lethal. Of the 116 known to be affected, it has killed 60.

So, since we have discussed earthquakes and pestilences, we might as well briefly discuss famines. At the present time there are food security emergencies in Chad, Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Niger, and Zimbabwe. There are food warnings in Djibouti, Uganda, Eritrea, Mauritania, Kenya, and Malawi.

There are food watches in Zambia and Mozambique.

No, we are definitely not yet in the tribulation period, we are still in the “beginning of sorrows.” But, sooner or later, the intensity of all three phenomena will suddenly increase, and we will find ourselves in great tribulation.
