The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) is a Palestinian militant organization operating in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The group has been labelled as a terrorist group by the United States Islamic Jihad is the second largest militant Islamic group in Gaza with 8,000 fighters present in the Gaza strip. In June 2013, the Islamic Jihad broke ties with Hamas leaders after Hamas police fatally shot the commander of Islamic Jihad’s military wing.

Assuming it becomes clear beyond any doubt that Second Lt. Hadar Goldin has indeed been kidnapped, it would be a development that requires not only the army, but the government as well, to devise a new policy vis-a-vis the Gaza Strip.

Before dealing with the long-term repercussions, there is the current phase in which most of the operational and intelligence efforts are devoted to locating the Givati officer, or at least prevent him being taken out of the reach of the IDF in the Gaza Strip. Heavy artillery bombardment on the eastern outskirts of Rafah was aimed at pinning the terrorists in place and preventing the possibility of them leaving the area with Goldin.

At the same time, efforts are being made to locate the missing soldier and the force that might have taken him. It is quite clear that the coming days are critical. After that, the intelligence dwindles and the ability to locate and free the abducted soldier diminishes. These hours are the golden hours and the IDF and Shin Bet will do their best to obtain the “golden knowledge” in order to make sure Israel doesn’t have another Gilad Shalit on its hands, or to verify that the suspected kidnap victim is no longer alive – which makes it easier, no matter how painful that might be.

Israel fears that the terrorists who kidnapped Goldin are probably already in hiding. It is also very possible that the kidnappers have not yet made contact with their commanders, due to the intensive activity of the IDF ground troops, and it is perhaps for this reason that Hamas has not yet announced that it has him in its hands. And perhaps, and this is faint hope, the soldier is not in their hands, but was lost in the massive explosion that preceded the kidnapping attempt and led to the tragic consequences of Friday. The sole testimony from Hamas is from the deputy head of the organization’s political wing, sitting in Egypt and claiming that Hamas seized an Israeli soldier in clashes before the ceasefire.

This is a blatant lie. It was at around 9:30 am that we first heard about an incident involving Givati troops in a nearby area. As is established, the ceasefire began at 8 am. Palestinian civilians began to close in on areas where IDF troops were located, in order to take advantage of the humanitarian ceasefire to gather possessions, or see what happened to their homes. At this point, as the civilians began to approach the soldiers, there was an attack on a Givati force that resulted in the officer’s disappearance.

The civilians of Rafah, hit in the bombardment, are truly the victims of Hamas. They trusted the group’s declaration of a ceasefire, took to the streets, and got caught up in the fighting which was started by Hamas, without anyone warning them or preparing them in advance.

There are two serious aspects to this incident. Firstly, the pre-planned, intentional violation of the ceasefire, most likely to finally grant Hamas its long-sought “image of victory”. The group apparently agreed to a ceasefire so that it could carry out the kidnapping attempt. It is also possible to draw this conclusion from the fact that Hamas, despite its announcement to the contrary, had not on Friday morning sent its negotiators to talks in Egypt. The Hamas leadership apparently knew in advance that the ceasefire would be violated, because it would be responsible for the violation, and therefore did not bother to dispatch anyone to Cairo.

The other serious fact is that actual the violation of the ceasefire and the abduction incident indicates that Hamas has every intention of continuing to fight. It would be fair to assume that Hamas would now be satisfied with a bargaining chip, and thus try to return to the process of a political settlement, or perhaps even seek the release of the prisoners freed as part of the 2011 Shalit deal and rearrested after the abduction of the Israeli teens in June. Their re-incarceration was a bitter blow for Hamas.

But Hamas is willing to fight, and Israel cannot allow it to negotiate from a position of power while probably holding a captive. The conclusion is that the IDF will have to expand the fighting, at least in the area where Goldin had last been, with the objective of rescuing him, and with the objective of placing equal pressure on Hamas and its leadership – initially to provide information and then to get the officer, if possible.

Three options

The options that lay before the Cabinet have changed abruptly. The option of a unilateral end to the fighting without a ceasefire agreement is off the table. Completing the destruction of the tunnels and exiting unilaterally while Hamas has a captive is a retreat under pressure – in other words, a strategic military victory for Hamas, even though the tunnels would have been destroyed.

Another option is to continue with forces in same areas of the Gaza Strip, with ongoing aerial and artillery assaults, until Hamas delivers information about the soldier. This option is also not recommended, as it leaves troops in the heart of built-up Palestinian areas, and therefore vulnerable to more kidnapping attempts.

A third option is movement and rapid fire from ground forces at specific targets that would put strong pressure on Hamas and the Gazan population. Perhaps a combination of crushing aerial and artillery attacks and rapid movement by Armored Corps combat teams may push Hamas off balance.

The Cabinet will also have to decide whether to send the Israeli envoys to continue negotiations in Egypt, or announce that until Hamas does provides information about the missing soldier or says definitively that it does not have him, Israel is not willing to enter any negotiations.

I am 100 percent in favor of exactly what Israel is doing in the Gaza Strip, as I indicated in my Blog of July 25, 2014, but this is not going to change the prophecies of God concerning the counterattack of the evil axis from the north at some point in time after Obama is no longer President.

Tunnels and rockets, but no top brass: Why Hamas’ leadership is still alive

Feature:

While past operations saw quick targeting of group’s top military and political leadership in Gaza, the current op has been almost completely devoid of high-profile targeted killings; why can’t the IDF take out Hamas’ top commanders?

During the opening days of Operation Pillar of Defense, the IDF’s last operation in Gaza, in 2012, the IDF took out Hamas’ top military commander Ahmed Jabari – however, Israel is 23 days into Operation Protective Edge and most of Hamas’ commanders are safe and sound.

On Tuesday, Finance Minister Yair Lapid told Ynet that the moment Hamas’ top commanders leave their bunkers “Israel will take them out”. However, it seems that despite the complex and massive intelligence efforts by the Shin Bet to find these leaders, they still remain safe from Israel’s fire.

The IDF and Shin Bet have managed to find and destroy the homes of numerous field commanders from both Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, as well as their company and battalion commanders.

However, the majority of the Hamas’ military wing’s top brass has managed to elude Israeli forces. Some are hiding in bunkers, while other find shelter among Gaza’s civilian population in mosques and hospitals. Even the top and middle echelon of the terror groups’ political leadership has managed to keep out of harm’s way.

This stands in stark contrast to the way things played out in Operation Pillar of Defense, which began with the killing of Ahmed Jabari, the second-in-command of Hamas’ military wing. His targeted killing was followed by the deaths of a number of senior commanders in the group’s military wing, including that of almost all of Hamas’ regional commanders

Even in the operation before that, Operation Cast Lead, Nizar Rayan – who was the group’s liaison between its military and political command – and Siad Siam – who was the interior minister – were killed by the IDF during the early stages of the operation.

No shock, no awe

The main difference between those two past operations and the current one are that, unlike Protective Edge, its predecessors began with a quick and destructive opening blow by Israel that achieved the operation’s central goal – hitting Hamas with shock and awe while dealing a massive blow to strategic targets in their terror infrastructure.

On the other hand, Protective Edge was easily foreseen by Hamas’ political and military leadership, giving them ample time to take to underground shelters – as early as two days before the operation began according to some assessments.

“The targeted killings – those people vital to Hamas’ functioning – are more valuable than any death toll,” now Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said during the previous operation, when he served as the intelligence minister.

Nowadays, even if Israel knows in which tunnel or subterranean bunker this or that commander can be found, they have no ability to take them out from the air without causing numerous civilian casualties.

Radio silence

Hamas has built well-fortified bunkers for itself, some of which are deep within the ground and internally reinforced with concrete. It seems Hamas has also prepared a communication network which has yet to be breached by Israel, and allows them to control what happens on the ground from well beneath it.

Moreover, the aerial hunt conducted by the IAF has yet to yield results in the form of senior Hamas officials or commanders because Hamas has almost complete compartmentalized its operations, preventing the IDF from picking up information from loose-tongued low-level operatives, while senior commanders seem to be maintaining radio silence.

Unlike previous conflicts, Hamas’ military commanders are making a special effort not to leave their bunkers and underground command centers. Thus, for example, a tape surfaced Tuesday in which Mohammed Deif, head of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades and therefore probably the IDF’s top target, can be heard from his underground bunker saying that rocket fire will stop only when Israel lifts its blockade on Gaza.

Moreover, despite the destruction of numerous homes of Hamas’ middle management commanders, some of which also served as front-line command centers, the group is maintaining order and ranks in its operations, sometimes by using curriers running from command center to command center, carrying notes with orders to field commanders instructing them to attack soldiers or fire rockets.

Also, unlike in previous operation, Hamas prepared organized fighting plans and protocols for its six regional commands throughout the Strip, thus rendering the need for direct orders almost completely obsolete, and saving top commanders numerous risks which could expose them to Israel’s wrath.

Any communications that need to take place between group members are done almost completely through secured landlines, and not mobile phones which are easily tapped by the IDF.

Earlier this week, IDF forces from the elite Maglan Unit who raided a Hamas commander’s house found, in addition to munitions and bulletproof vests, a number of discarded cell phones, indicating that Hamas’ forces have grown more disciplined, and this seems to be true for ground forces as much as higher ranking officials.

At the beginning of the week, Hamas claimed the reason for the IDF’s failure to kill its commanders was that the terror group had “cracked” the Shin Bet system for finding the whereabouts of Hamas men.

According to the group, the Shin Bet used to call relatives of Hamas officials and leaders from a Palestinian number, inform them that their terrorist loved ones had died in an IDF attack, and then track the subsequent phone calls they would make to find the operative the IDF was searching for.

Using location technology, the Shin Bet would then identify the location of the calls, in the hopes of either reaching the official himself or their immediate circle, and launching a targeted attack.

In the meantime, from Mahmoud al-Zahar to Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’ top leaders are nowhere to be found. They are probably safe and sound deep in the heart of Gaza’s underground system of tunnels.

Legend has it that they are both in the group’s main command center, built directly under Gaza’s al Shifa hospital, as was the case in of Operation Pillar of Defense, and we can only assume holds true today as well.

An IDF officer in charge of some of the attacks said that the rocket launching sites attacked by Israel are sometime also homes of senior commanders.

However, in the meantime, over three weeks into the operation, no serious damage has been caused to Hamas’ top commanders.

In the many years I have studied this subject, I have found it to be one of the most difficult prophecies I can be precisely accurate in expositing, and yet it is one of the easiest to interpret within prescribed limits. And so, after considering the many different ways of counting the time from “the commandment to restore and build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the prince” by many different men, which you have read in the previous eight updates, I freely admit there are only two things of which I am certain. After all the glitter and calculations have been considered, only these two conclusions can I consider to be valid without question, and I will state them later in this final Update of the series.

Daniel 9:24-27 – Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. [26] And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. [27] And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

The reasons one cannot be exactingly precise are numerous. The errors made in calendar adjustments between Oriental and Western calendars based on the movements of different astronomical movements of two different heavenly bodies, the actual birth date of Christ appearing to be 4 BC, assorted other shifts in time keeping by the ancients, and whether the years listed are supposed to be 360 or 365 and ¼ days, have combined to make it impossible to take an oath any one of the many sets of calculations is absolutely accurate. However, it is a situation that can be narrowed down to one of two proclamations issued to rebuild the city of Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity, and a sufficiently accurate outcome by applying 360 day prophetic years to one, while applying 365 and ¼ days to the other proclamation, which have led me to say that one or the other must be correct. Since I have described the calculations by B.H. Carroll and others, as applied to the third proclamation, which were based on 365 and ¼ days, please allow me to quote directly from a book by John Urquhart, who bases his calculations on proclamation number four, and uses 360 day prophetic years. The following quote is taken directly from “The Wonders of Prophecy,” by John Urquhart, Charles C. Cook, Fifth Edition.

“That third edict has very generally been regarded as the decree ‘to restore and to build Jerusalem’– a view with which I once concurred. But a closer examination of the terms of the edict does not support that conclusion. Those terms are most explicit. Ezra is empowered to convey the treasure contributed by the king and his counselors, from Babylon to Jerusalem, to receive other voluntary offerings, to expend the funds, and to appoint magistrates and judges. But there is no mention whatever of building and restoring Jerusalem; and, if that task had been assigned to Ezra, it would be hard indeed to explain why, in an edict fully transcribed and elaborately minute in regard to everything else, no reference whatever is made to that important undertaking. When we turn to the fourth degree, however, we meet for the first time, language which is in significant accord with the description of “the commandment spoken of by Daniel. Nehemiah tells us that, when Artaxerxes asked ‘For what dost thou make request,’ he replied: ‘If it please the king, and if thy servant hath found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldst send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers’ sepulchers, that I may build it.” He also begged a letter to ‘Asaph, the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me according to the good hand of my God upon me.’ Here we have in explicit terms an authorization to Ezra to build the city of his fathers’ sepulchers; and the fourth decree is consequently ‘the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem.’

To apply these results, we have first of all to inquire what those 483 years are. Are they years in every respect like the years of our own calendar? There are clear indications in Scripture that the Hebrew month, like that of Babylonia and of Egypt, consisted of 30 days. The year consequently contained 360 days; multiplying those 483 years by 360 so as to find the entire number of days, we divide by 365.25 and so change them into calendar years. The result of this rough and ready, but sufficiently accurate, method is that 483 prophetic years are found to be equivalent to 476 years of our ordinary chronology of today.

We have to ask next to what special point in the past we have to stretch it onward into the future. The narrative in Nehemiah furnishes a perfectly clear reply. We are told that the concession was made ‘in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the King.’ He began his reign in the year 465 B.C. He was now in the twentieth year of his reign: in other words 19 years of his reign were completed and the 20th year was in progress. Deducting these 19 years from 465, we are brought to 446 B.C. – the year in which the edict was issued ‘to restore and to build Jerusalem.’

‘A word or two will now complete our demonstration. Applying the 476 years of the prediction to this point (446 years before the birth of our Lord) we find that they bring us down to that event and leave 30 years over. That is the year 30 A.D. is specified as that of the Savior’s cutting off in his crucifixion. While everyone will feel how amazing that the year and the very month – the month Nisan – of our Lord’s death should have been fixed centuries beforehand, some may imagine that there is, nevertheless, a slight inaccuracy. We are told (Luke 3:23) that Jesus entered upon this ministry when he was about 30 years of age. The year 30 A.D. would, therefore be the year when his ministry began, and not the year of his crucifixion. But the Scripture is absolutely accurate. When the division between the time B.C. and the time A.D. was made, the year 1 A.D., was really the year 5 A.D.; and the year 10 the year 14 A.D.; and the year 30 the year 34 A.D. And thus the year 30 A.D. in our chronology was really the year of our Lord’s death. The chronology was in error, but there was no error in the Scripture; and that sacrifice, which will be remembered and celebrated throughout eternity, was offered at the appointed time.”

What follows is my summary of Parts 1 through 8 of the 70 weeks – In the Agency there were times when reams of information, collected from all over the Soviet Union, would be piled on the desk of an analyst, day after day, week after week, perhaps month after month, and from it all he or she was expected to present conclusions as to how it did, or did not, or might, or could, present a scenario that would of future benefit in confrontations with forces and peoples of other nations. In all analysis work there are times when one feels completely helpless because the evidence usually cannot be molded into a concrete pattern of certainty. I am thankful for my training as an analyst because, at times, there are things you can know FOR SURE, others of which you are reasonably certain, some that are fifty-fifty, a high percentage of those in the “definite maybe” category, and some that leave you setting all alone not having the foggiest idea what it all means, if anything.

Daniel 9:27 – And HE shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week HE shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations HE shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

So let me present to you two things that I know FOR SURE, and these two are quite enough to make my point, because more than 95 percent of the world’s prophetic teachers today are in complete disagreement with them. Ironically, all of the world’s prophetic teachers before 1740 did agree with them, and a majority of them considered then to be true into the beginning of the twentieth century. The beginning of the Great Evangelical Age in 1740, the beginning of the popularization of a pre-tribulation theory in 1827 by John Darby, and the publishing of the Scofield Bible in 1909 pushed the following two teachings into antiquity by the middle of the twentieth century. And the very popular twentieth century book, “The Late Great Planet Earth,” which was followed by the “Left Behind” series of publications during the present century, has almost eliminated the possibility of anyone ever hearing these two conclusions or even knowing they once existed. But I AM SURE the following TWO conclusions are correct.

(1) The three HE’s in Daniel 9:27 are NOT a future antichrist.

(2) There are NOT 7 years of Daniel’s 70TH week waiting to be fulfilled.

They are quite enough because so many other prophetic teachings are based on them being a lie. I would say that more than 80 percent of the prophetic teachers today are teaching that that Daniel 9:27 represents the antichrist, and that we are waiting for the entire last week of seven years to be fulfilled. In the previous eight updates I have listed a bevy of great Bible preachers who believed the two things listed above. I am acutely aware that what I have presented has, and will continue to cause a wide variety of emotions among those who have taught, and do teach, that these two things are not true. But I ask those who have the most violent reaction – did you know what was taught before the teaching of Daniel 9:27 arose that has dominated the last 100 years of prophetic teaching – Did you know it before you starting teaching what you teach today? I had been exposed to the teaching of it as a youth in the forties by old Missionary Baptist preachers, but I did not know where it came from, or the history of it, until I studied it for myself. Have you ever studied it for yourself? Please don’t attack the personal integrity of all those men of God prior to 1740, as well as the majority who held it into the early twentieth century, to prove your position. I attempt not to attack the personal integrity of any man’s character to prove any case, interpretation, or point I am attempting to draw from the Scriptures, and diligently try to make my case on what I believe the Bible teaches. I spend a great deal more time asking myself why I teach it, what my real motive is in presenting it, and invariably I find myself asking myself – are you presenting it to please men or God, are you teaching what God wants them to hear or what they want to hear? I spend so much time in judging my own motives in teaching something that it does not leave me with much time to think about the motives of others. However, I do not think I am out of line or out of God’s will to ask others to do the same. I concentrate on following Jesus as he leads me along the path he directs me to follow, which doesn’t leave me much time to think about what he has chosen for other men to do in his fields of labor.

John 21:21,22 – Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? [22] Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

One really does not have to go back before 1740 to find the teaching that the HE’s in Daniel 9:27 represent Christ. Here are just a few of many authors published after 1827 who were not swayed by the new teaching of the HE’s representing a future antichrist.

Have you ever gone back and checked to see what was taught before 1740? Did God choose not to reveal the truth about Daniel 9:27 until after 1740? Did he choose the Great Evangelical Movement as the time to reveal the truth about Daniel 9:27? Did he wait to popularize the truth of the Pre-Trib Rapture by John Darby in 1827? Did he wait to spread the Pre-Trib position across the country and world by Scofield in 1909? Certainly, the answer to all these questions is an individual matter between you and God. I have to stand before the judgment seat of Christ to answer for everything I have taught, so I persuade men of what I believe about the Second Coming of His Son. I would be a spiritual fool to do otherwise.

II Corinthians 5:10,11 – For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. [11] Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

Colossians 3:23-25 – And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; [24] Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. [25] But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

I do not question your motives in what you teach or why you teach it, that is a very personal matter between you and God, and something you alone are capable of doing. I only know it is something God wants all of his children to do. I hope my motive for presenting this series is made manifest in your consciences.

Iraq’s Assyrian Christians Fear ISIS Threat to Heritage!

ALQOSH, Iraq — When militants led by the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) — now known as the Islamic State — stormed Iraq’s second-largest city, Mosul, on June 10, Um Hanna and her extended seven-member family hastily rushed toward the safer town of Alqosh, 50 kilometers (31 miles) to the north.

In Alqosh, the family lives in a two-room house offered to them free of charge by a local resident. As a Christian family, they thought if they stayed in Mosul their fate would be annihilation at the hand of the militants.

“It was a dangerous situation for Christians,” Um Hanna told Al-Monitor, standing among her family members. “No one knows how the situation in Mosul will end for Christians.”

So far, at least, the worst fears of Um Hanna and many others like her have not come true.

Many like Um Hanna expected ISIS to engage in a campaign of eliminating non-Muslims — such as Christians and followers of the ancient Mesopotamian Yazidi faith. ISIS, it was assumed, would soon embark on destroying their cultural heritage in Mosul. A number of Christian community leaders Al-Monitor spoke with estimate a couple hundred Christians might still be in Mosul. But, the jihadists seem to have refrained from acts of large-scale violence against those groups or the systematic destruction of their religious or cultural symbols.

This stands in contrast to their track record in neighboring Syria, where they have engaged in a brutal campaign of killing significant numbers of followers of other religions. The ISIS militants in Syria have also destroyed religious and archaeological sites of minorities.

Comparatively, in Mosul, a few Christian monks and individuals appear to have been subjected to abductions. Accounts of killings are disputed and unverifiable at this point.

Despite media reports of ISIS plans to destroy Christian archaeological relics and religious sites, so far only a statue of the Virgin Mary appears to have been destroyed, based on accounts provided to Al-Monitor by knowledgeable sources on the ground.

The statue was removed from al-Tahera Chaldean Church in the Shifa quarter of Mosul just days after ISIS swept the city. On June 29, ISIS forces also turned a church used by the Catholic Chaldean Archeparchy of Mosul into an office, according to Basem Ballo, the mayor of the town of Talkeyif, less than 10 miles northeast of Mosul. Ballo, a Christian, told Al-Monitor that he maintains contacts in Mosul and said the archeparchy’s building did not have archaeological value.

While some websites and sources that Al-Monitor spoke to have suggested that the 3,200-year-old Assyrian statue of a half-human, half-animal winged mythical creature known as Lamassu had been destroyed, antiquities officials in Mosul vehemently denied that.

“I go to work every day and regularly check with my employees at different archaeological sites and I can tell you none of the ancient sites or antiques have been destroyed so far,” a senior source in Mosul’s antiquities department, who did not want to be identified because of security concerns, told Al-Monitor.

There is a consensus among the multiple sources Al-Monitor spoke to that no destruction of churches or Assyrian and Christian archaeological sites in Ninevah has occurred so far.

“No churches, monasteries or ancient sites have been yet destroyed inside Mosul by the armed groups,” Anwar Hadaya, a Christian member of the Ninevah Provincial Council who currently resides outside Mosul, told Al-Monitor. “This should not be a source of praise for them, but perhaps they are trying to send a message to the world that they are revolutionaries, not terrorist groups.”

Others agree that ISIS has tried to present a different image of itself.

“They [ISIS] know that they need to improve their image,” Abdulhadi Mohammed, a pseudonym for a journalist based inside Mosul who did not want to use his real name for security reasons, told Al-Monitor. “The image that ISIS had among people was that they are killing people, taking their valuables and destroying their properties. This has not been how they have largely acted in Mosul.”

Although the bulk of media coverage of Iraq’s ongoing turmoil appears to be focused on ISIS, in reality the revitalized Sunni Arab insurgency is a loose alliance of different groups with often diametrically opposing ideological and political objectives.

The Jaish Rijal al-Tariqa al-Naqshbandiya (JRTN) — the Army of the Men of Naqshbandi Order — is a key player in the insurgency. Led by Saddam Hussein’s former deputy, Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, the JRTN ranks are full of former military officers and loyalists of Hussein’s Baath Party. In addition, members of the Sunni tribes, disgruntled with the marginalizing policies of the Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s government, are a major component of the insurgency. Many used to serve in the ranks of the Awakening Council forces formed by the United States following its troops’ surge in 2007 to fight al-Qaeda and other extremist groups.

This might partially explain the unexpectedly less violent approach toward non-Muslim religious minorities in Mosul and other parts of Iraq dominated by Sunni militants. The common denominator among these diverse groups is a shared opposition to Maliki’s rule, the increasingly Shiite-dominated security forces and their alleged mistreatment of Sunni Arabs.

The Sunni militants have, however, shown less compassion toward Shiite soldiers and in some cases even civilians. The ISIS-led Sunni militants have engaged in a ruthless campaign of massacring dozens of Shiite Muslims in areas south of Kirkuk. They also summarily executed dozens of Shiite soldiers arrested at an air force academy in Tikrit.
Seeing the wave of brutality that ISIS sometimes appears to proudly publicize online, many Christians in Ninevah are concerned that despite the relative restraint ISIS has shown, conditions might change.

“We have serious fears as to what might happen,” Hadaya, a Ninevah Council member, said. “They have not embarked upon destroying the churches and other religious and archaeological sites, but we fear that might happen at any moment.”
Ninevah is closely tied to Christian Assyrian heritage. It was once the seat of the Assyrian empire and a long-standing bastion of Christianity in Iraq and the broader region. There are also many Chaldean Christians in Ninevah.

Some here in Iraq worry that as it strengthens its foothold, particularly with the announcement of a caliphate, ISIS might seek to impose a strict version of Sharia.
“Their policies and behavior might become more severe after they founded the caliphate,” Abdulghani Ali Yahya, a Kurdish journalist and commentator who used to visit and live in Mosul for extended periods, told Al-Monitor. “They might go for something like duplicating the Taliban’s experience in Afghanistan.”

In the modest house where they have currently settled, Um Hanna’s daughter-in-law interjects in our conversation and cannot hide her anxiety about the circumstances Christians are facing.

“There is no future for Christians in Mosul anymore. No one knows what will come next,” she said. She did not wish to reveal her name out of fear that her few remaining relatives in Mosul might be identifiable. “We are a minority and yet we have paid the biggest price of any group during these past years.”
