Since its creation in 1947, there has been no greater friend of Israel on the international stage than the United States of America. When the Jewish state was founded, it was supplied with arms, weapons, and military supplies for the fledgling country. Throughout the 20th century the US stood beside its staunchest ally in the Middle East, while other nations threatened its very existence.

Now, in an unfortunate turn of events, America’s former-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has labeled Israel as an occupying force in its own homeland. In her recently released memoirs, “Hard Choices,” Clinton stated that the Jewish state is continuing a long-standing and brutal occupation of the West Bank. She claims that the Israeli occupation denies Palestinians living in the West Bank “dignity and self-determination.”

Officials in Israel and the US accused Clinton of a striking a tone deaf note in her comments and suggested that her claims reveal a bias against the Jewish nation. More startling though is the continuation of President Obama’s overarching policies toward one of America’s oldest allies. Under the current administration, Washington consistently puts pressure on Israel to drop its claims on land in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to provide the Palestinians with an opportunity to create an independent state.

Earlier this year, current Secretary of State John Kerry used the term “apartheid state.” The Obama administrations game plan in the Middle East has been one that provides little support to Israel and coddles terrorists bent on tearing the region apart at the seams. Sources on Capitol Hill can recall an incident in 1999, as proof of Clinton’s views on Israel, when the then-First Lady sat beside Yasser Arafat’s wife (Suha Arafat) with a smile on her face as the terrorist leader launched an anti-Semitic barrage at Israel.

The land in question in Clinton’s memoir consists of vary swaths of territory that Israel seized in 1967 during the Six Day War. Egypt, Jordan, and Syria initiated the Six Day War in a coordinated, three-pronged attack aimed at destroying the Jewish state. Since then, Israel has maintained possession of those territories and controlled the flow of arm, weapons, and terrorists in and out of the regions in question.

Given Hillary Clinton’s likelihood to run for president in 2016, many are concerned that she strikes a similar tone to President Obama’s current (and failed) policies toward Israel and the Middle East. The clear message emanating from Washington today is one of “blame Israel.” In her memoirs, Clinton accuses Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of lacking seriousness when it comes to addressing the issue of peace between his country and Palestinians.

Clinton specifies that Netanyahu appears suspicious of peace talks that require Israel to forfeit land in return for the promise of peace. While most Americans cannot imagine the small comfort zone Israel lives with every day, Clinton has seen those battle lines firsthand. She has been to Israel and seen the miniscule margin between Israel and a group of people bent on destroying it. Clinton has seen that and can still manage to make such insensitive remarks.

Jews continue to leave Europe, says report

From 9.5 million in 1939, the number of European Jews has fallen to 1.4 million; and as anti-Semitism appears to be on the rise in the continent, some speak of a new ‘exodus’.

The last several decades have seen a precipitous drop in the number of Jews living in Europe, according to a poll published Monday by the Pew Research Center.

The report estimated that there were 3.2 million European Jews in 1960, which fell to 2 million by 1991, and to 1.4 million in recent years.

Emigration was particularly extensive in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. An estimated 3.4 million Jews lived in the European USSR in 1939. Following the catastrophic population decrease resulting from the Holocaust, the number was reduced to 2 million.  

But emigration since 1945 has left 310,000 Jewish inhabitants. In Eastern European countries, the 4.7 million-strong Jewish community has dwindled to less than 100,000.

The report noted that while most of decline can be attributed to emigration to Israel, intermarriage and assimilation could also be factors.

Meanwhile, the decline appeared to be less severe in some Western European countries, whose Jewish population in 1939 was relatively smaller to begin with. About the same number of Jews live in France today as in 1939, while the number of Jews in the United Kingdom has dropped from 345,000 to 280,000.

However, the report noted recent reports of increased emigration from France, as well as new report showing a record level of anti-Semitism in the UK.

The report said 10 percent of the world’s Jews live in Europe, down from 57 percent in 1939 and 35 percent in 1945.

President Barack Obama says the US is studying the option of supplying lethal defensive arms to Ukraine if diplomacy fails to end the crisis in the east.

Russia had violated “every commitment” made in the failing Minsk agreement, he added, after talks with the German chancellor on a new peace deal.

Mr Obama has come under pressure from senior US officials to supply arms, despite objections from Angela Merkel.

Russia denies accusations of sending troops and supplying the rebels.

The latest diplomatic efforts come amid renewed fighting between the pro-Russia rebels and Ukrainian government troops, with fighting centred around the strategic railway hub of Debaltseve.

The rebels said on Monday they had cut off a key supply road to the town, which is near the rebel-held city of Donetsk, but the military says the battle is ongoing.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is considering the peace proposals, earlier blamed the West for the crisis.

The fresh push for talks is aimed at ending a crisis that has already claimed more than 5,300 lives and displaced 1.5 million people from their homes.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Washington on Sunday

Mrs Merkel met the US president in Washington on Monday to update him on German-Franco plans to restart peace talks.

She has made it clear that she opposes providing lethal arms to the Ukraine government, telling a security conference at the weekend that she did not believe more weapons could “lead to the progress Ukraine needs”.

Mrs Merkel and French President Francois Hollande have been leading efforts to revive the Minsk peace plan, which collapsed amid fighting over the winter.

The detailed proposals have not been released but the plan is thought to include a demilitarised zone of 50-70km (31-44 miles) around the current front line.

Ukrainian government officials say nine soldiers and at least seven civilians have been killed in fighting over the last 24 hours.

‘Broken pledges’

EU foreign ministers in Brussels agreed on Monday to impose further sanctions against Russian and rebel officials, but have put them on hold for a week to give the peace efforts a chance.

Mr Putin earlier said Western countries had broken pledges not to expand Nato and forced countries to choose between them or Russia, leading to the current crisis in Ukraine.

In comments to an Egyptian newspaper, Mr Putin accused Western states of supporting a “coup d’etat in Kiev” – a reference to the ousting of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych last year.

He lost power amid protests over his decision to scrap a deal that would have seen Ukraine establish closer ties with the European Union.

Since then, Russia has annexed Ukraine’s Crimea Peninsula and rebels in the east have sought to establish full control over the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Germany‘s peace efforts were sharply criticised by senior US Republicans who attended an international security conference in Munich over the weekend.

Senator Lyndsey Graham, who attended with Senator John McCain, said: “At the end of the day, to our European friends, this is not working. You can go to Moscow until you turn blue in the face. Stand up to what is clearly a lie and a danger.”

Mr McCain said: “The Ukrainians are being slaughtered and we’re sending them blankets and meals. Blankets don’t do well against Russian tanks.”

US Secretary of State John Kerry has denied any rift with EU leaders, stating that they remained “united” and were “working closely together”.

President Obama “values the chancellor’s judgement, and appreciates her strong efforts in marshalling European support and maintaining transatlantic unity throughout the Ukraine crisis,” US National Security Council spokesman Mark Stroh told the BBC on Monday.

What was the Minsk agreement?

A ceasefire signed by Ukraine and pro-Russian separatist rebels on 5 September 2014 in Minsk, Belarus

They agreed to 12 points including pulling back heavy guns by at least 15km (9 miles), releasing prisoners, allowing access to international observers, and setting up a buffer zone on the Russia-Ukraine border. Foreign mercenaries were to withdraw and Donetsk and Luhansk would get wider self-rule

But military clashes never entirely stopped. Each side accused the other of violating the deal and violence later flared the length of the ceasefire line

Rebels also held their own local elections in November 2014, in defiance of Kiev. The government responded by saying it would scrap partial autonomy for Donetsk and Luhansk

I was led to Jesus by the Spirit of the One who sent him to offer to offer his sinless flesh and blood for my soul’s eternal salvation in him, and to justify the glory of my new resurrection body.  All of this is done by the grace of God in Christ Jesus.
