Psychological Warfare in the Ancient World

LACHISH: PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE

PSYWAR IN THE ANCIENT WORLD

Psychological warfare, or PSYWAR as it is now called, is not a modern invention. The ancient Assyrians were masters of the art.

Their strategy was four-pronged:*

*advance warning of their strength; the formidable army of the Assyrians hardly ever lost a battle, and anyone who faced them knew they had virtually no chance of winning

*continual vilification and insults directed at the citizens of a besieged town – like Lachish

*prominent display near the city walls of tortured, dismembered, disemboweled captives; decapitation was a mercy for any prisoner of the Assyrians records of the savage details of their victories, prominently displayed in their own palaces so that visiting envoys and ambassadors had to pass and see them.

The Assyrians had capable generals, well-trained soldiers, and excellent weapons. At the height of their power they were virtually invincible on the battlefield.

So if they invaded a country (like the little kingdom of Judah), and the inhabitants were not prepared to surrender, it was marginally safer for them to hole up in a fortified city and wait out the inevitable siege. This is what the people of Lachish tried to do.

Siege warfare, which involved the entire noncombatant population of the besieged town, was governed by a strict rule: before any hostile action, peace was offered in return for surrender to the besieging army. If this offer was refused, the town’s adult male population was liable to death and its property to confiscation.

HAVING THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EDGE

Even so, there was little chance of beating the Assyrians, since part of their power lay in their reputation – first for success, but also for dealing unmercifully with kingdoms who did not toe the line.

This gave them a psychological edge.

Assyrian kings used the inscriptions in their own palaces, and abroad, as a warning to foreign nations. They boasted that they destroyed all cities they took, and they often claimed to have killed entire populations.

WAR PROPOGANDA IN THE ANCIENT WORLD

These declarations had a deliberate public-relations purpose, as deterrents, warnings to anyone who even thought about rebellion or resistance.
According to these inscriptions, the most imaginative refinements of cruelty were reserved for cities resisting the Assyrians:

With battle and slaughter I stormed the city and captured it, 3,000 of their warriors I put to the sword; their spoils and their possessions, their cattle and sheep I carried off.

Many captives from among them I burned with fire, and many I took as living captives. From some I cut off their hands and their fingers, and from others I cut off their noses and their ears. I put out the eyes of many.
I made one pillar of the living, and another of heads, and I bound their heads to posts round about the city.

Their young men and maidens I burned in the fire, the city I destroyed,

I devastated, I burned it with fire and consumed it.

Another inscriptions says:

I took the city, and 800 of their fighting men I put to the sword, and cut off their heads. Multitudes I captured alive, and the rest of them I burned with fire, and carried off their heavy spoil.

I formed a pillar of the living and of heads over against his city gate and 700 men I impaled on stakes over against their city gate.

The city I destroyed, I devastated, and I turned it into a mound and ruined heap.
Their young men and maidens I burned in the fire.’

The Bible records that at the siege of Jerusalem, Sennacherib’s officer, taunting the Jews on the city, wall, assured them that they were doomed to ‘eat their own faeces and drink their own piss’ (2 Kings 18:27).

Micah 5:2-6 – But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. [3] Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel. [4] And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth. [5] And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men. [6] And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.

Hamas in Gaza preferable to ISIS in Gaza

Op-ed: This is probably the worst timing to talk about interests shared by Israel and Hamas. The heart says ‘never,’ but what does the mind say?

Efraim Halevy

July 4, 2014

On the eve of the discovery of the three kidnapped teens’ bodies, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented his political and security-related doctrine to the citizens of Israel and the world. No more moves of response tailored for the needs of the hour, but an organized doctrine pointing to an intention to implement a consistent policy, step by step.

The regional developments, according to Netanyahu, require the erection of an efficient and reliable security fence along the Jordan River, both in order to combat dangers from the east and northeast and in order to effectively control the movement of the Palestinian residents living between the western security fence and the new eastern one.

The premise indicated in his speech is that the Palestinians in Judea and Samaria will get accustomed to this situation, whether due to lack of choice or because of simultaneous efforts to provide them with improved living conditions, a thriving economy and a certain degree of self rule, subject to Israel’s security needs.

Israel, according to Netanyahu, will continue its uncompromising battle against the terror led by Hamas and will claim prices which may be greater and harder, as long as it takes. At the same time, it will develop an initiated regional policy and team up with countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, and will especially be loyal to Jordan.

In this framework, Netanyahu devoted a specific, unequivocal statement to Kurdistan, which is still a district in northern Iraq, and publicly declared his support for its political independence.

But there is no certainty whatsoever that this policy can be implemented. The Palestinian public in Judea and Samaria is starting to wake up, and the clashes developing between Jews and Arabs are multiplying and intensifying. Mahmoud Abbas’ control of his people is growing weaker, both because of his own failures and because in the past few months Israel has been operating against him both publicly and in other ways to force him to take the road we are outlining.

In this state of affairs, individuals and groups may initiate acts of revenge, some of which will be thwarted while the others will inflame the situation even more.

As it is clear that the Palestinian side will not be able to receive the suggested outline, Abbas will be forced to fight it or get out of the arena. The Palestinian Authority’s collapse will be an inevitable outcome.

On the regional level, the Kurdish move is filled with problems. Netanyahu made his comments shortly after US Secretary of State met with Massoud Barzani, the president of the Kurdish district in northern Iraq, and begged him not to push for the region’s independence. Netanyahu’s declaration pushes Israel one step further away from its American friend and joins other moves of estrangement from its ally.

The Israeli move likely aims to encourage the establishment of a Kurdish state in territories where significant Kurdish publics live. We are talking about a future annexation of lands from northern Iran, Turkey and Syria to the new state. There is no idea which is further away even from Russia’s policy on this issue.

The case of a strong regional opposition to the establishment of a Kurdish state, I doubt that Israel, with all its abilities, will be able to carry the responsibility for the move on its shoulders. Let us just mention that during the Yom Kippur War, Israel had hoped that the Kurds would open a front against the Arabs in northern Iraq, but that hope was shattered.

Netanyahu also spoke about the radical Islamic forces – ISIS – which are moving fast towards Baghdad. He likely wrapped them in the same bundle with Hamas, but that’s not the case. Hamas is the most bitter and efficient rival of ISIS.

Khaled Mashaal declared Wednesday that Hamas was interested in maintaining its agreements with Israel which ended the two recent rounds – Operations Cast Lead and Pillar of Defense. Hamas in Gaza is preferable to ISIS in Gaza.

This is probably the worst timing to talk about the interests shared by Israel and Hamas, as we mourn the teens killed in a despicable murder. The heart says “never,” but what does the mind say?

It’s Now time to examine the revisions made to pre-1740 Prophecy
Islamic Crescent Moon Gap now closing on Israel by Al-Qaeda ISIS
The Political Diplomatic Dialog Results of Obama are not a Surprise
President Obama Took Power As The Commander-In-Chief In 2009
And Kept a Political Promise In 2011 to Hold On To His Liberal Base
I’ve warned for 40 years that Daniel 2 & 7 Toes & Horns are Islamic
And I’ve repeatedly said Iraq would definitely be found among Them
I’ve Been Certain This Is The Correct Prophecy Pattern Of End Times
But I‘ve Never Known the day-week-month-year Islam Attacks Israel
And I do know that the Islamic Crescent Moon Is Now forming in ISIS
And I know Crescent Islamic forces will drive Israel into a vast Negev
I’m Confident Israel will Not be driven into Negev Before Obama Goes
But I Don’t know the day-week-month-year Israel will be driven There
I can only be certain current events indicate an attack is drawing Nigh
But I’m certain the Rapture occurs when Revelation Trumpet 7 Sounds.
The Majority of Publications Don’t teach what was taught Before 1740!

Please consider what I’ve been certain of about the rapture for 32 Years

SPECIAL PROPHECY UPDATE NUMBER 73D
A 70 YEAR OLD FROG IN A 21ST CENTURY PUNCH BOWL
June 26, 2002
Had I been born in the 18th or early 19th century, I would have been accepted as a pillar of orthodoxy in prophetic teaching. In that time period most, and if not most, then many, believed the following:
1) That God himself would do the destroying of the earth by his Mighty Power
2) That the “he” in Daniel 9:27 refers not to the antichrist, but to Messiah the Prince, Jesus Christ, and that Jesus has already fulfilled the first part of Daniel’s 70th week.
3) That the empire of antichrist would only affect the areas that were conquered by Daniel’s Babylonian, Persian, Grecian, and Roman Empires in his seventh chapter. In other words, the known world at the time of Daniel and John’s writings in Revelation.
4) That the first resurrection, what is commonly referred to today as the “rapture,” would occur on the blowing of the seventh trumpet in the book of Revelation, which they believed to correspond to the “last trump” in First Corinthians. Others believed it would not occur until the final vial of wrath was poured out at the end of the Tribulation Period.
5) That the antichrist would come out of Syria and the countries backing him would come out of the southern flank of the old Roman Empire, and would stretch from Morocco to Iran, which today are Islamic nations.
Since I believe all five of these things, I am about as popular as a frog would be when found floating in a punch bowl at the high school prom. To some I am a heretic, lunatic, or renegade. I much prefer to be referred to as a goofy, antiquated, 79 year old frog floating around in a 21st century punch bowl of modern day prophetic teachings. But regardless of what I am, I honestly believe we are quite likely to find out, probably within the next 4 years, who is right about their interpretation of prophetic scriptures and who is wrong.
So, since I have already presented my case on these subjects, which may be found in our Prophecy or Birth Pang Archives, with one exception, that being the 7th Trumpet Rapture, you may as well know what the old frog believes about this subject.
Paul, writing to the church at Corinth, indicated he was going to unveil a mystery of the Old Testament that a lot of the Prophets wrote about, but whose writings were to be made clearer to later generations. Isaiah wrote about it terms that we, now having the New Testament, are able to comprehend more fully.
Isaiah 26:19 + I Corinthians 15:51,52 + I Thessalonians 4:16,17 – Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead. [51] Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, [52] In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. [16] For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: [17] Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
Paul “showed” or “clarified” the “mystery,” but John tells us when it will be finished.
I Corinthians 15:51 + Revelation 10:7 + I Corinthians 15:52 – Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, [7] But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the pro-phets. [52] In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
PAUL “SHOWED” THE MYSTERY – JOHN FINISHED IT!
Revelation 10:7 – But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.
WHEN THE 7TH TRUMPET BLOWS THE SAVED WILL BE CAUGHT UP TO HEAVEN FOR JUDGMENT BY CHRIST, AND ALL THAT MAKE UP HIS SPIRITUAL REALM WILL STRETCH FROM ONE END OF HEAVEN TO THE OTHER.
Revelation 11:15,18 – And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. [18] And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.
While the nations on earth are angry because of the seven vials of wrath that are being poured out following the blowing of the seventh trumpet, the time of the dead, who have suddenly been resurrected for judgment before Christ, occurs in this heavenly scene of Revelation 11:18. While the saved are being judged for rewards in heaven, God’s seven vials of wrath are destroying those who are responsible for the destruction of morality on the earth. However you interpret this scripture it paints a heavenly scene where the resurrected dead are being judged for rewards in heaven, and it follows the blowing of the 7th trumpet. It has to be what Paul outlined in II Corinthians as describing Christ judging all the saved after the rapture.
II Corinthians 5:2,3,10 – For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: [3] If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. [10] For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
In Revelation 9:13 we read that the sixth trumpet has sounded, so we know that the next trumpet to sound will be the seventh in a series of seven.
Revelation 9:13 – And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,
In the first verse of the following chapter we are introduced to a mighty angel from heaven with tremendous authority from heaven. He is an archangel and may well be the seventh angel who blows the final trumpet in a series of seven.
Revelation 10:1 – [1] And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:
He has direct authority from God to speak for Him, and to give an oath in his name. He then tells the reader that the earthly church age of the Gentiles is about to end.
Revelation 10:5,6 – And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, [6] And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:
I cannot tell for sure in the Greek of verse seven whether he is referring to himself, or is merely telling us what will happen when the seventh angel blows his trumpet. But, in either case, in this verse we are definitely informed that:
1) The seventh angel has a voice.
2) The seventh angel is soon to blow his trumpet.
3) When he blows it the mystery surrounding the rapture of the saved, spoken in the Old and New Testaments by the prophets, will be finished.
Revelation 10:7 – But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.
I believe the voice of the archangel and the trump that is blown in II Thessalonians 4:16 is the same as found in Revelation 10:7 and 11:15.
1 Thessalonians 4:16 – For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Revelation 11:15 – And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.
I also believe that the last trump of I Corinthians 15:52 is the last in a series of seven that is sounded in Revelation 11:15.
I Corinthians 15:52 – In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
And I am convinced that the dead in this verse are the dead in Christ who are resurrected to stand before Christ’s judgment seat in heaven to be judged for rewards and/or the lack of them.
Revelation 11:18 – And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.
I do not anticipate going through the vials of God’s wrath that follow the blowing of the seventh trumpet.
Revelation 16:1 – And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.
I Thessalonians 5:9 – For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
For a long time I kept silent on what I believed on the five things presented at the beginning of this Prophecy Update, and went merrily around the world presenting lectures on the geological upheavals the Bible indicated would occur during the last 3 and ½ years of the Tribulation Period, and the Five Signs of His Coming, and The Antichrist, and From Now to Armageddon. It was possible for me to do this series of four different lectures without telling people what I really believed on the five subjects at the beginning of this Prophecy Update. As long as I did this I could present what I believed would happen during the last 3 and ½ years of the Tribulation Period, the signs that would precede it, and what would happen during the blowing of the first six trumpets. In other words, I could present what I was convinced God’s children would soon experience. I was prince charming to many attending the lectures. I truly believe I did was I was supposed to do. I did not lie to people. I just did not address directly the five subjects. Well, old prince charming has done what he was supposed to do and, since passing age 78, is now completing at age 79 what he believes he is supposed to finish. In so doing he has been changed from a fast moving young prince into an old frog in a punch bowl. I know that I must face Christ at His judgment seat, and I would much rather appear there as an old frog who told God’s people what he knew in his heart what was about to happen to them, rather than as a charming young prince who told them just what they wanted to hear.

King of the South not likely to attack Soon!
September 28, 2007
http://www.tribulationperiod.com/
The prediction of Ahmad Jibril concerning an immediate Israeli attack against Syria in the Jerusalem Post is interesting, but very unlikely to occur as soon as he implies.
I would love to see Ahmad Jibril’s prediction of Israel attacking Syria “very soon,” come true because if that were to be the case, Israel would definitely win the ensuing war. However, that is not what I expect to happen, and I do not expect the prophecy of Daniel 11:40-42 to be fulfilled soon and, when it finally is fulfilled, the initial push of the king of the south (Israel) will be met by a planned counterattack from the king of the north (Syria), which will drive Israel into the Negev Wilderness, where she will remain for some three and one-half years.
Daniel 11:40-42 – And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. [41] He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. [42] He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.
Zechariah 13:8 – And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.
Revelation 12:6 – And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
The important thing about this prophecy has never been WHEN it would be fulfilled, but knowing it WOULD one day be fulfilled, living one day at a time as a believer with a heart committed to serving him. I started guesstimating the time of the attack that would start the last three and one-half years of this present age of the Gentiles many years ago, but only because so many people asked me about it. It has always been a guess, no more and no less! I have tried since 1971 to fight day by day against the evil in my flesh and the world by his power in seeking first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness. If I am still doing that on the day any prophecy is fulfilled, the ‘morrow’ of the prophecy will have taken thought for the things of itself.
Matthew 6:33,34 – But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. [34] Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Jibril: Israel will attack Syria soon
JPost.com Staff, THE JERUSALEM POST
September 28, 2007
Israel has already made a decision to attack Syria and was just mulling over where to land its first strike, Ahmad Jibril, leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine claimed in an interview published Friday by Arabic newspaper Al Hadat.
Jibril estimated that Israeli action, several weeks after an alleged IAF foray into Syria on September 6, would likely be a wide-scale operation, and would probably be answered with attacks by Iran, Hizbullah in Lebanon and the Palestinians of Syria.
“I believe Israel has prepared all likely scenarios for war with Syria, but they are still considering where they will land the first strike, which will come very soon,” Jibril said. “They are weighing whether to attack on one front or on multiple fronts.
“There is an American Israeli plan, backed by silent agreement from the Arab world, to change the balance of power in the Middle East,” he added.
The PFLP leader said also that Israel was wary of a “domino effect” that would drag other countries into the conflict. “The Israelis have not formed a final estimate regarding the possibility of Iranian intervention if they will attack Syria. Secondly, the Lebanese resistance, led by Hizbullah’s Islamic resistance, will intervene and strike the Zionist home front with missiles,” he said.
“The Syrian brothers will not be afraid to protect their land and will continue the war with the Zionist enemy, and we, the Palestinians in Syria, will not sit by idly – we will be on the front lines,” Jibril added.
However, despite Jibril’s claim that “Hizbullah would also participate,” officials in the organization hinted that they would not interfere in a future conflict. Two weeks ago, Sheikh Na’im Kassem, Deputy Secretary General of Hizbullah and Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah’s second in command, said that Israeli estimates that the group would try to take revenge on Syria’s behalf were no more that “journalistic assessments based on insufficient evidence.”

Israel sends troop reinforcements to Gaza border. National home front on heightened alert

DEBKAfile Special Report

July 3, 2014, 2:28 PM (IDT)

Israeli defense officials passed the word to foreign news agencies Thursday, July 3, that troop reinforcements had been sent to the Gaza Strip border amid intensifying Palestinian rocket barrages. DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the reinforcements almost certainly included tanks and self-propelled artillery.

A military official added that the Israeli Navy had reinforced its war fleet opposite Gaza’s Mediterranean coast, and the Home Front Command had raised the national level of alert while highly reluctant to embark on a major offensive against Hamas in its Gaza stronghold, the Israeli government could scarcely continue to avoid real action after 30 rockets were aimed on the same day, July 2, against Ashkelon, Netivot, Sdot Negev, Sderot, Kerem Shalom and the Eshkol District. Three slammed Thursday morning into houses in Sderot, causing heavy damage but no casualties.

The IDF clearly expects the Gaza missile barrage to widen out from targets in southern Israel to towns further north.

Tensions are also simmering in Jerusalem over the suspected revenge killing of a Palestinian boy, with further violent Palestinian outbreaks expected to accompany his funeral later Thursday.

The various sources said that, by passing word of a military buildup, Israel was most likely broadcasting a grave warning to Hamas to stop the missile barrage or else the IDF would step in for a wider operation than heretofore to achieve this purpose. Thus far, Hamas has not been persuaded by Israeli air strikes to rein in its own or fellow terrorist organizations shooting rockets at Israel.

Micah 5:3-7 – Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel. [7] And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a dew from the Lord, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men. (See whole numbered Prophet Updates 62 to 69)

Zechariah 14:8,9 – And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. [9] And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.

Expressions Of Solidarity With ISIS In The West

Special Dispatch No. 5783

June 3, 2014

The following report is a complimentary offering from MEMRI’s Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor (JTTM). For JTTM subscription information,

In April 2013, a rift was created in the global jihadi movement when the Islamic
State of Iraq (ISI) announced that it was expanding into Syria and that it was changing its name to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Following this announcement, another jihadi organization in Syria, Jabhat Al-Nusra (JN), rejected ISIS’s authority, remaining loyal to Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri. ISIS even challenged Al-Zawahiri himself, refusing to follow his instructions to restrict itself to operating in Iraq. In early 2014, the rift escalated to violent conflict – ISIS versus JN and other jihadi organizations in both Iraq and Syria.

Having taken control of large areas of Iraq in recent months, ISIS is now enjoying increasing shows of solidarity from the Middle East and from across the Muslim world – and also from Western countries. Several factors contribute to its popularity, among them its jihad against the Americans in Iraq prior to its expansion into Syria, when it was ISI; its current struggle against Iraq’s Shi’ite government and its security forces – perceived as apparatuses for Shi’ite suppression of Sunnis; and its war against the Alawi Assad regime, which is an ally of the Shi’ites. ISIS’s activity on these fronts has helped bolster its image as the spearhead in the war against the enemies of Islam within and without the Muslim world, and raised its stature among supporters of global jihad.

Further adding to its popularity are ISIS’s achievements on the battlefields of Iraq and Syria, and its image as the only organization today that is actualizing authentic Islamic ideals and striving towards establishing the Islamic idea of a greater caliphate. It casts itself, and its propagandists depict it, as a legitimate sovereign body implementing shari’a law in areas under its control, and spreading Islam by means of jihad, thus forming the core of this future caliphate. Recently, ISIS spokesman Abu Muhammad Al-‘Adnani even called on Al-Qaeda to swear fealty to his organization, because the “state” it embodies supersedes any organization.[1]

Sympathy for ISIS extends also to its leader, Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, who is seen by the organization’s fans as the legitimate leader of all Muslims. This is because of his religious education, his lineage, and his jihadi past. As a challenger to Al-Zawahiri, he is considered more charismatic and more capable of leading the Muslim ummah towards the longed-for caliphate. Thus, under Al-Baghdadi’s leadership, ISIS is emerging as an alternative to Al-Qaeda, and is seen as working diligently to actualize the Muslims’ goals without Al-Qaeda’s religion-based reservations about, for example, imposing the jizya poll tax on Christians or conducting mass killings of Shi’ites.

The persecution of ISIS, even by Al-Qaeda, adds to its status in many circles as an “underdog” fighting for the goals of Islam and the good of all Muslims. Additionally, its highly efficient propaganda apparatus circulates videos and publications via jihadi forums and social media, praising itself and criticizing its rivals and opponents.

Westerners Joining And Promoting ISIS

The Westerners who are leaving their home countries to join ISIS in its fight in Iraq and Syria also add to the organization’s prestige, both inside and outside the Muslim world. These volunteers are widely covered by the media in their own countries, and each new arrival also receives a fanfare in the organization’s local press outlets and social media; these volunteers themselves are usually very active users of social media, communicating with friends and family back home as well as followers and engaging in their own efforts to promote and recruit for the organization in the West.

Further evidence of its sweeping popularity was the June 19, 2014 “One Billion Muslims Support ISIS” campaign, which urged ISIS sympathizers worldwide to express their support for the organization on Friday, June 20, and even devised a special Twitter hashtag for the purpose. The campaign elicited considerable response from supporters in numerous participants, who posted images and videos expressing their support for ISIS.[2]

This Western support for ISIS is crucial to the group’s propaganda efforts; in addition to swelling the ranks of its fighters and bringing in funds and logistical support, it increases its prestige and deters its rivals.
Elements Used In Expressions Of Support For ISIS

These expressions of solidarity with ISIS on social and other media use common ISIS symbolism. They include posters of support for it and for Al-Baghdadi; the use of the slogan baqiya wa-tatmaddad, “will remain and spread”;[3] the black tawhid flag, widely used by other global jihad elements; and ISIS nasheeds, or Islamic songs.

Other expressions of solidarity include: photos of ISIS posters next to Western landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Big Ben in London, the Atomium building in Brussels, and the Coliseum in Rome; photos of ISIS posters alongside Western passports; and other images shared on social media. All these add to ISIS’s image of an organization on the rise, and may also indicate its expansionist ambitions.

Belgium and The Netherlands

ISIS is evidently very popular with radical Muslims in Belgium and The Netherlands. For example, a February 2014 YouTube video titled “Nasheed Live 2014 Belgie & Nederland” features a male choir singing a medley of songs glorifying ISIS and deriding its rivals. For example, there is a song in Arabic and Flemish titled “Unite the Ranks and Pledge Loyalty to [ISIS Leader] Al-Baghdadi”, and derogatory songs about America, JN and the Free Syrian Army. The singers also call out ISIS slogans like “the Islamic state will remain forever”. The group’s extensive familiarity with ISIS-related themes attests to the organization’s far-reaching influence, even on people in Europe.[5]
A December 2013 YouTube video[6] documents a pro-ISIS demonstration by several dozen people in a Dutch city.[7] In it, ISIS supporters, who appear with their faces unmasked, praise the organization and fire up the crowd with ISIS slogans and songs. Some of them hold up a sign saying “Democracy = Hypocrisy.”

Pro-ISIS demonstration in Holland
The video begins with a slide saying “From the heart of the Western lands, from Holland – to the brave hero Sheikh Abu Bakr, the Emir of the Believers who rolls the apostates’ noses in the dust. We will sacrifice our lives, our property, our children and all our assets for you, and Allah is our witness that we will support our beloved state [ISIS] by word or deed.”

As part of the One Billion Muslims campaign, an ISIS supporter from Amsterdam posted the image below, of a hand-made sign photographed against the background of a Dutch windmill. The sign reads: “The Islamic state in Iraq and Syria will remain and expand. From Holland, on Friday, June 20, 2014. the ‘support the Islamic state’ [day]. Amsterdam, capital of Holland.”

In another image posted as part of this campaign, four people, whose faces are blurred, hold up ISIS banners in a Dutch city center decorated with flags to celebrate The Netherlands’ participation in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The image below, posted on the Twitter page of the One Billion Muslims campaign, shows an ISIS banner agaisnt the background of Amsterdam’s central train station:

Supporters from Belgium posted photos of pro-ISIS signs against the backdrop of the Brussels Atomium. The signs say: “ISIS will remain and expand, with Allah’s help – Brussels.”[8]

The sign below, photographed against the backdrop of a building in downtown Brussels, says, among other messages, “Your brother from Belgium supports you.”

In addition to images taken in Western cities and/or next to iconic Western landmarks, ISIS supporters also post pro-ISIS messages next to Western passports, to signify that support for ISIS is global, and perhaps also to hint at the coming of the Caliphate will render them obsolete. The image below, sourced from the same Twitter page, shows a Dutch passport and a Turkish once, with a note saying: “One billion Muslims support ISIS.”

Spain

Among the participants in the One Billion Muslims campaign were also ISIS supporters from Spain. Naturally, they did not refer to the country as Spain, but as Andalus, and some even called it a wilaya (province) of the future Islamic caliphate.

Germany

Shows of solidarity for ISIS in Germany have also been multiplying. A number of Germans have joined the organization’s ranks, mainly in Syria; among them is German rapper Deso Dogg, aka Abu Talha Al-Almani. [9]

Numerous images from Germany were posted in support of the One Billion Muslims Support ISIS campaign:

A number of German posts use children to express support for ISIS; below, a masked child holds up a sign in German for the One Billion Muslims campaign.

France

Many French citizens have gone to fight in Syria, with the greatest number apparently joining ISIS; some of them have since returned to France. The many shows of solidarity with ISIS from France include photos taken near Paris landmarks such as the Eifel Tower and the Louvre, under the title “French Support for ISIS”:[10]

June 1987

The Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) is the oldest terrorist organization in existence today and one of the most secret and deadly. Despite its long history of violence, Western security organs were recently taken by surprise when they learned that a well-camouflaged arm of the SSNP had succeeded in setting up a large terror network in Western Europe—complete with safe houses, weapons caches, and forged passports—and that it was the SSNP that had set off a series of deadly explosions in the heart of Paris, to gain the release of Georges Ibrahim Abdallah. The United States, too, has felt the effects of the SSNP. The explosion aboard a TWA flight nearing Athens in April of 1986, which cost the lives of four passengers—one of them an infant—has been traced to May Mansur, of Tripoli, a veteran member of the SSNP, who debarked at a previous stopover after placing a bomb under her seat.

Dedicated to the principle of establishing Greater Syria—which extends from the Euphrates to the Nile, an area that today includes Syria, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and southeastern Turkey—the SSNP has little in common with the Shiite religious zealots of the Hizballah, who, operating from Iran to Lebanon, are trying to bring the kingdom of heaven down to earth, or with members of the Palestine Liberation Organization, who seek the redemption of their lost homeland at the end of a trail of blood. Although the SSNP may align itself with these groups for the sake of expediency, it regards them all as fighting for the sectarian interests of pseudo-national communities that are misguided in their failure to identify with the broader “Syrian nation.” If the Islamic Jihad or the PLO indirectly or even inadvertently advances the “Syrian cause,” the SSNP is glad to collaborate. But it will not support the Hizballah in its aim of founding an Islamic republic in Lebanon or help the PLO work toward the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, for these goals clash head-on with the SSNP’s goal of a secular Syrian state. And while it supports the present Syrian government of President Hafez al-Assad as the fulcrum of power in Syria, the SSNP is wary of the regime’s sectarian (Alawi) and socialist leanings and its support of pan-Arabism, which calls for an Arab state (as opposed to the Syrian state called for by the SSNP) spanning the area between the Atlantic Ocean and the Persian Gulf. Since the death of Gamal Abdel Nasser, the Egyptian leader, pan-Arabism has become more a sentiment than a political movement.

The SSNP has an independent tradition of more than fifty years of violence, and some of the decisive events in the modern history of the Middle East have been triggered by its expertise in political assassination. For example, the murder of Colonel Adnan Maliki, the Syrian deputy chief of staff, in 1955, which led almost directly to Soviet influence over Syria, and the murder of Lebanon’s President-elect Bashir Gemayel, in September of 1982, which sparked the massacres in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps and prompted the collapse of Israeli Defence Minister Ariel Sharon’s plans to change the face of the Middle East, can both be traced directly to the SSNP.

Since March of 1985 the SSNP has sent about half a dozen suicide drivers in booby-trapped vehicles, or “torches,” toward Israel from Lebanon, killing about thirty civilians in the explosions. This style of terrorism was inspired by the success of the Shiite fanatics who blew themselves up in the camps of the American Marines and the French troops in Beirut. The man currently responsible for training these suicide bombers, a stocky, bearded fellow in his mid-thirties named Assad Khardan, has created something of a cult around the suicide attacks. Khardan, who earned himself the position of SSNP commissioner of security in part by forcing his predecessor to jump to his death from a third story balcony, has been known to spend months preparing candidates for suicide missions. He is especially fond of using attractive young women from indigent families, and has already sent four such martyrs to their deaths. The feminine gender is not a sine qua non, however; four men have blown themselves up inside vehicles packed with half a ton of explosives each. All successfully negotiated their way up to one of the roadblocks just outside the Israeli security zone (which extends about seven and a half miles into Lebanon) and activated the detonator when they were stopped for the standard search and check of documents. Unlike the Shiites of the Islamic Jihad, the SSNP does not have to send out a backup team with a remote-control detonator in case its emissaries get cold feet at the last minute.

One surviving girl, who was nineteen years old at the time of what was to be her martyrdom, was recruited after running away from home and stumbling into a Lebanese town where the Syrians and their sympathizers maintain a large base. She was arrested on suspicion of having been sent to gather intelligence for the Israelis. After several weeks of interrogation, her captors—a mixture of Syrian soldiers and SSNP militiamen—began to visit her cell at night, and she soon discovered that she was pregnant. She was cleared of all suspicion and released, and found a haven in the local branch of the Leftist Front (a coalition of about a dozen parties that lean toward Marxist ideology), where her guardians began to drum the SSNP’s principles into her. Over and over again she was shown videotapes of the “last will and testaments” recorded by other young women before they set out on their suicide missions. No one forced her to take on her own mission, and no one assured her a place in paradise; there were neither threats nor inducements. “They just explained to me how important the mission was,” she later said, “how much they would respect me if I stood up to the test. ”

All the other suicide bombers dispatched by the SSNP likewise carried heavy emotional baggage. One had failed his examinations at a technical institute and feared the reaction of his family and friends. Another felt crushed by the burden of supporting a large family after his father died. None of them, incidentally, managed to keep his plans secret; without exception they alluded to their intentions weeks and even months in advance. One young woman told her fiancé that she would not be able to marry him on the date set for their wedding, because all that would remain of her would be a “dark red lump.”

Today schools, streets, squares, and public institutions throughout Syria are named after the suicide bombers, and the country’s most popular singer, Marcel Khalifa, has recently monopolized the top spot on the hit parade with his anthem to the suicides. Video cassettes of the bombers’ “wills” are available at sidewalk kiosks, and sales are consistently brisk.

Syrian social nationalism is in its way a religion; it claims to be a comprehensive philosophical doctrine that provides answers to all the questions and quandaries of life and thus supersedes every other faith. It is not by chance that when new recruits are sworn in to the SSNP they are required to renounce all other loyalties in a ceremony they refer to as a baptism—the washing away of the past and divorcement from everything that is not in the service of “the idea.” No other terrorist organization requires such total dedication; the members of the SSNP are required to pledge—in advance and without reservation—their souls, not just their time and energies. If the members of the SSNP seek heaven on earth, it is not the anarchist’s paradise of absolute freedom but an Elysium of blind obedience and the subordination of the individual to the glory of Greater Syria.

This religion has its own martyred prophet, holy scripture, and, of course, rituals; all it lacks is a deity. The prophet is Antun Sa’adeh. Thirty-eight years after he was executed in the dead of night, the holy scripture he left behind—a confused treatise titled The Growth of Nations—has a whole new following. Sa’adeh called for a completely new reading of history based on a doctrine according to which Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed were instruments of the “Syrian genius” who contributed to the inexorable rise of the ancient Syrian nation as the strongest and most creative force in the annals of mankind. Sa’adeh was not disturbed by the fact that the nation he spoke of a conglomerate of all the peoples and tribes that since t he dawn of history have lived between the Euphrates River and the Mediterranean Sea-does not exist and that most scholars shrug disdainfully at the notion that it ever did. His explanation, as expanded upon in current party publications, for the failure of these tribes and peoples to cohere into a unified kingdom is that the enemies of the nation-from King Cyrus to Ronald Reagan-have always conspired against it at just the critical moment,: sabotaging its redemption from disarray.

A teacher of German who had grown up in Egypt and Brazil, Antun Sa’adeh was a short, high-browed, and distinctly unimpressive-looking man who behaved imperiously and demanded blind obedience, banishing even the most loyal of his followers the moment they questioned his will. Sa’adeh was born to Lebanese Greek Orthodox parents, and he spent much of his adult life in Lebanon. There he saw the problem that Christians faced in supporting future regimes: for a Christian to join any sort of pan-Arab movement would imply that he renounced the possibility of political equality. So Sa’adeh created a vision in which neither Islam nor pan-Arabism was important, and therefore religion wasn’t either. Much taken with European fascism, he introduced to the Lebanon of the 1930s a simplistic vision of harmony among the country’s many ethnic communities through a return to Syrian “racial unity” (actual races were kept vague, since Greater Syria would include the non-Semitic Turks, but Jews were certainly excluded) and a collective dedication to the revival of the Syrian nation. In place of the clashes between the Christian Maronites and the Moslems, the Kurds and the Bedouin, Sa’adeh recommended that all groups view themselves as heirs of the empires of Babylonia and Assyria, the descendants of the Hittites and the kings of Aram. Sa’adeh kept his party in Lebanon, where the large Greek Orthodox population ensured that he would attract his natural constituency. Underground cells formed in Syria, Jordan, and Palestine, among other neighboring countries.

Sa’adeh’s followers today are aware of not only who is in the nation but also who its enemies are—meaning who are its targets for terrorist actions. This is a highly varied list, including the governments of Turkey, Egypt, and Iran (despite the number of enemies that Iran and the SSNP share, any independent rule of Iran threatens Greater Syria), as well as Israel—or, to be more precise, Jews everywhere. While the rest of Israel’s enemies, including the PLO. dispute the right of the Jews to return to their ancestral homeland after 2,000 years of life in dispersion but ostensibly have no complaint against those Jews who have remained in the Diaspora, the SSNP’s account with the Jews goes back to the war of the Canaanite and Emorite tribes (thought but not known to have been Semitic) against the ancient Israelite invaders. According to this reading, the ancient Hebrews were also cultural usurpers, who, in Sa’adeh’s words, “arrogated all the Bible stories from the legacy of Babylonia, embraced Canaanite ritual ceremonies, and joined them all together into the Torah.” It is indicative that most of Sa’adeh’s followers came and continue to come from the Greek Orthodox community, which, following the model of the Slavic church, has always been zealously and explicitly anti-Hebrew in a way that the far larger Catholic and Islamic communities have not. Only during the past decade have a modest number of Shiites, many of whom oppose the Khomeini leadership, and Druze been drawn to the movement.

The SSNP has displayed astonishing staying power, considering its tribulations and the shattering blow it sustained when Sa’adeh was executed, in 1949, after a fruitless attempt to take over Lebanon which was doomed by delusion from the start. Syria put a stop to SSNP activity by 1956, and the leaders who failed to flee in time were sent to prison. In Jordan, in 1966, King Hussein sent his security services into action to eradicate the party’s cells and halt its activities among the Palestinian population. In Lebanon the party received a serious blow in 1961, when in a fit of despair two of its members, company commanders in the Lebanese army, tried to carry off a lightning coup—with the aid of ten tanks—and failed. Almost all the party’s known activists remained in prison or exile until a general amnesty in 1969, and there are few among its present leaders who have not known torture and long imprisonment.

Archival documents published in recent years reveal that Sa’adeh and his immediate successors received aid from Western intelligence services. French intelligence in the Levant utilized the SSNP almost from its inception, to undermine the pan-Arab movement in Syria and keep Christian youngsters out of its ranks. The SSNP secretly received money and, occasionally, small arms from the Deuxième Bureau, which also persuaded the French authorities to turn a blind eye to the party’s violent actions. In the 1950s the CIA adopted this approach, viewing the SSNP as dubious but nonetheless deserving of support, because it adamantly opposed the vision of Arab unity being promoted by Nasser and it fought leftist movements. Moreover, the SSNP supported the programs then being promoted by the West to forge the unity of the Fertile Crescent as a barrier against Soviet penetration. Thus the SSNP in Lebanon was accorded generous aid in maintaining an armed Militia, and this fought alongside the other pro-Western groups in the 1958 Lebanese civil war, which climaxed with the landing of the Marines on the shores of Beirut. In effect, this militia—sporting uniforms similar to those of Nazi storm troopers—prospered with the help of covert American encouragement. It is the forebear of the terrorist cells operating today.

Barely a decade ago the SSNP appeared to be heading swiftly toward demise as a relic of the days when the Arab world was captivated by the figures of Hitler and Mussolini. It is clear today, however, that the third generation of SSNP activists—some of them grandchildren of its founding members—have brought the party back to life. Men who had been forgotten since the 1940s or 1950s have recently reappeared in the role of mentors, political mummies come back to life. Slogans that had long faded or peeled off walls have been restored with fresh paint, and the aura of action that surrounds the SSNP is once again attracting young people to the symbol of the red hurricane.

The road back from oblivion began in 1969, with the release of many SSNP members from Lebanese prisons. At first they were unable-to reorganize the party. Without a leader whose authority was accepted by all, Sa’adeh’s disciples took to quarreling and often ended up settling their accounts with revolvers. Before long the principle of unconditional obedience had given way to anarchy, and the party underwent three or four schisms from the late 1960s to the early 1980s.

After years of struggle, however, Sa’adeh’s heirs essentially agreed to pour their energies into saving the dying party. This is what first prompted an “openness toward the left.” In time Marxist jargon began to creep into the movement’s publications, and the attitude toward Syria changed appreciably. Hafez al-Assad underwent a dramatic metamorphosis from enemy to ally, because by keeping Syria firmly on its feet he has improved the prospects of establishing Greater Syria at some time in the future. By considering Assad a tool for extending Syria’s control over Lebanon and the Palestinians, and removing other impediments to Greater Syria, the SSNP is able to overlook the “scientific socialism” and pan-Arabism at the heart of his political philosophy.

At the same time, rather than try to restore its ties with the United States, the SSNP has turned to the Soviet bloc, primarily Romania but also the USSR directly. Since 1970 it has maintained ties with the radical factions of the PLO and has instructed its members to take part in Palestinian terrorism “on a personal basis.” Only recently, however, has the impact of this involvement been fully appreciated. What has mistakenly been regarded as pure Palestinian terrorism has in fact frequently been spiked with a strong dose of SSNP venom. Until his death of cancer in exile in Geneva, Sa’adeh’s son-in-law, Dr. Fuad Shemali, was one of the moving spirits behind Black September, the PLO group responsible for the murder of eleven Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics and for the 1972 attack on the American Embassy in Khartoum. Members of another wing of the SSNP, led by Bashir Ubeid (who was murdered by a rival Moslem faction in Beirut in 1979), were active partners with the notorious Carlos and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in bringing about spectacular hijackings.

In this way the SSNP gradually joined the camps of its erstwhile adversaries. By 1975 the party had been accepted into the coalition of Lebanese left-wing parties that formed around Yasser Arafat. After Arafat’s ouster from Beirut in 1982, the SSNP became a senior partner in the pro-Syrian camp in Lebanon. Radio Damascus even allowed one of the party’s more prominent figures to broadcast a regular spot about the path to reaching Greater Syria. Three main factions of the party emerged in the late 1970s, and they are still active today. One, headed by Ina’am Ra’ad, enjoys financial support from Colonel Muammar el-Qaddaffi, of Libya. Another, headed by Jubran Juraysh, is closely associated with Syria’s air-force intelligence—the main coordinating agency of Assad’s intelligence community. A third, smaller wing of the SSNP, headed by a man known as “the Archbishop,” still maintains ties with Arafat.

When the Israel Defence Forces captured much of Beirut, in 1982, Ariel Sharon neglected to order a search for SSNP activists, and in recent years the party’s militia has gotten back on its feet. Armed with Soviet weapons (courtesy of the Syrians), its members underwent their baptism by fire in the battles waged by Syria against Arafat’s forces in Tripoli, in 1983, and against the Phalangist troops in the Shouf Mountains, in 1984. The SSNP also played a role in instigating terrorist actions against the Marines in Beirut, though the actual bombing was perpetrated by Shiites from the Hizballah. The SSNP militia is not a very large one. According to Israeli intelligence, it boasts a total of a few thousand fighters, some of whom are reservists called up only in emergencies. But it has one great advantage over rivals and allies alike: as Christians, its members enjoy greater freedom of movement both in Lebanon and beyond than Moslems do. Moreover, in contrast to other terrorist forces, it is structured on a rigid hierarchy and exercises iron discipline.

Because of its unparalleled control over its members, the SSNP has become Syria’s most reliable instrument of terror, and it is employed for particularly sensitive and dangerous operations that are beyond the capabilities of the Palestinian terror groups headquartered in Damascus. This was already true five years ago, when President Assad let it be known that he wanted Bashir Gemayel killed before his inauguration as President of Lebanon. A covert SSNP agent, Habib Shartuni, planted a bomb in his sister’s apartment; Gemayel was scheduled to speak before a seminar on Phalangist ideology in the basement of the same building. Shartuni is still in custody in Beirut: Gemayel’s heirs seem afraid to press for the carrying out of the death sentence passed against him. In mid-1986, when it was in Assad’s interest to restrain the members of the Hizballah concentrated in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, he used a company of SSNP fighters to keep them in line. At about the same time, Georges Ibrahim Abdallah and the members of his family were sent to Western Europe to assassinate diplomats and lay the groundwork for future acts of terrorism there. Abdallah was caught entirely by chance, and his identity as the head of the group that murdered the American military attaché Colonel Charles Robert Ray, in Paris in 1982, came out only during his detention. He and his four brothers deny that they operated in allegiance to the SSNP, claiming that they left the party a number of years ago. But intelligence experts are skeptical of this explanation. Even research by the BBC has found that Abdallah retains his ties with the party, though ostensibly he acted as the head of an independent body.

Through the SSNP, Syrian intelligence is also penetrating the large concentrations of Lebanese emigrés in locations from West Africa to Detroit, exploiting the party’s fund-raising and propaganda activities to scout out new recruits. In this way the Syrians are hoping to break free of their dependence on the Palestinian terrorist organizations, which have declined into a state of incessant squabbling and in any case have yet to recover from the disaster following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, Arafat’s expulsion from Jordan and Tunis, and the split within the PLO.

In an era when the pan-Arab vision has fallen into eclipse and the doctrine of Arab socialism seems bankrupt, the SSNP offers a formula that sounds both fresh and promising: We are all Syrians, and the remedy for our ills lies not in pan-Arabism or social revolution but in strengthening Syria and extending its borders. In the past few years the SSNP’s call has been attended by Lebanese resigned to the loss of their national independence, Palestinians who have despaired of realizing Arafat’s slogans, and people from an assortment of sects and minorities in the Middle East. Even some Shiites are turning away from Khomeini’s preachings, about an Islamic revolution to seek refuge in the SSNP, as the Israeli army discovered while contending with the guerrillas in South Lebanon.

This present cooperation with other sects and causes notwithstanding, the heads of the SSNP do not wholly trust Hafez al-Assad (and Assad does not wholly trust them). But they welcome the alliance as an opportunity to work up momentum and gain freedom of action. It matters little that their efforts may not bear fruit for many years to come. Theirs is a movement distinguished by inordinate patience, and they measure its success in historical terms, not by today’s headlines.
