Being a believer, and believing Middle East war is inevitable, my opinion as to what we should do is heavily biased, since I do not believe the war is a far distant event. I don’t care how many troops we send over there, the topography, Islamic religion, the number of tribes and dislike for each other, the Afghanistan lands being a historical graveyard of powerful nations, and with the President and Congress we have, I don’t believe it will make any difference how many troops we send because when we do finally pull them out, the outcome will be the same. It would not bother me if we pulled all our troops out, and let the tribes fight it out among themselves. The longer we stay the more dangerous it will be during the withdrawal.

The Demographics of Afghanistan are a mix of ethnic and linguistic groups. The population of Afghanistan is 28,396,000, according to the “significantly revised” October 30, 2009 CIA Factbook. This reflects its location astride historic trade and invasion routes leading from Central Asia into South Asia and Southwest Asia. The majority of Afghanistan’s population are Iranian peoples, notably the Pashtuns and the Tajiks. The Pashtuns are the largest ethnic group followed by Tajiks. The Hazaras are the third largest ethnic group, then the Uzbeks, Aimak, Turkmen, Baluch, Nuristani and other small groups. Pashto and Persian (Dari) are the two official languages of the country. Persian is spoken by at least half of the population and serves as a lingua franca for most. Pashto is spoken widely in the south, east and south west as well as in western Pakistan. Uzbek and Turkmen are spoken in the north. Smaller groups throughout the country also speak more than 70 other languages and numerous dialects.

The term Afghan, though (historically) synonymous with Pashtun, is promoted as a national identity. It is, however, hard to combine the varying groups. Often the Pashtun are referred to as Afghans while some of the other groups hold on to their ethnic names such as Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks, and so on. The citizens of Afghanistan are in many ways some what distinct from the notion of ethnic Afghans as a result of this understanding. In order to solve the problem, in recent years, the term Afghanistani (meaning of or from Afghanistan and analogous to Uzbekistani, Pakistani or Tajikistani has been suggested for the citizens of Afghanistan in contrast to ethnic Afghans who would be the Pashtuns. The idea is supported by some politicians in Afghanistan, such as Latif Pedram. However, in a research poll that was conducted in Afghanistan in 2009, 72% of the population put their identity as Afghan first, before ethnicity.

99% of Afghanistan’s population adheres to Islam. An estimated 80% of the population is Sunni, following the Hanafi school of jurisprudence; 19% is Shi’a. Despite attempts during the years of communist rule to secularize Afghan society, Islamic practices pervade all aspects of life. In fact, Islam served as the principal basis for expressing opposition to communist rule and the Soviet invasion. Likewise, Islamic religious tradition and codes, together with traditional practices, provide the principal means of controlling personal conduct and settling legal disputes. Excluding urban populations in the principal cities, most Afghans are divided into tribal and other kinship-based groups, which follow traditional customs and religious practices.

Taliban Reopen Northern Front in Afghanistan

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan — Far from the heartland of the Taliban insurgency in the south, this once peaceful northern province was one place American and Afghan officials thought they did not have to worry about.

Afghan officials cut the police force here by a third two years ago and again earlier this year. Security was left to a few thousand German peacekeepers. Only one Afghan logistics battalion was stationed here.

But over the last two years the Taliban have steadily staged a resurgence in Kunduz, where they now threaten a vital NATO supply line and employ more sophisticated tactics. In November, residents listened to air raids by NATO forces for five consecutive nights, the first heavy fighting since the Taliban were overthrown eight years ago.

The turnabout vividly demonstrates how security has broken down even in unexpected parts of Afghanistan. It also points to the hard choices facing American, NATO and Afghan officials even if President Obama decides to send more soldiers to Afghanistan, as he is expected to announce next week.

Even under the most generous deployments now under consideration, relatively few additional troops are expected in the north; most will be directed to the heartland of the Taliban resistance in the south and east.

Afghan and international officials say security never had to deteriorate so badly here. The Taliban were a scattered and defeated force in northern Afghanistan, long home to the strongest anti-Taliban resistance, the Northern Alliance.

But the government, and American military trainers, failed to remain vigilant to signs of Taliban encroachment, and reduced deployments in the northern provinces in order to bolster other, more volatile regions.

The decisions created vulnerabilities as Kunduz became a target with the opening of a new logistics route here for NATO supplies from Russia and Central Asia, over an American-financed bridge that opened in 2007. The route is supposed to serve as a strategic alternative to the treacherous passage through Pakistan, which is regularly attacked by Taliban militants.

Now, the Taliban have re-emerged with such force that during the presidential election in August, police officers were fending off attacks on the outskirts of the city of Kunduz, and militants were poised to overrun the center, officials said.

“The Taliban were at the door of the city; the people thought the government was at an end,” said a senior security official, who asked not to be named because of the nature of his work.

Since then, the threat has been somewhat contained after an operation by NATO and Afghan forces, but the province remains at risk.

Residents of Kunduz said they noticed that the Taliban reappeared in numbers in the region in the spring of last year.

At just that time, under pressure from the American military in charge of training the Afghan security forces, the government of President Hamid Karzai reduced the number of police officers in Kunduz to just 1,000 from 1,500, officials said. Then, earlier this year, the Interior Ministry ordered 200 police officers from every northern province to help secure the capital, Kabul, which was suffering increasingly serious attacks from insurgents.

A district like Khanabad, with a population of 350,000, has just 80 police officers now, the governor of Kunduz, Muhammad Omar, said in an interview. In the district of Chahardara, where hundreds of insurgents are at large, there are only 56 police officers, enough only to guard the district center and the main road.

“It deteriorated suddenly,” the governor said. “The first reason is that we have very few police in Kunduz considering the strategic position of our region, and our police are not able to cover the whole region.”

In fact, after their defeat in 2001, the Taliban never left the region. The insurgents lay low but remained a menace to be constantly watched, according to the former governor of Kunduz, Gen. Muhammad Daoud, now a deputy interior minister.

The Taliban, who are mostly Pashtun, draw natural support through tribal ties with Pashtuns, who make up nearly half of Kunduz’s population. Many of the fighters are local men who fled to Pakistan after 2001 and have returned in the last two years.

Central Asian fighters from a group linked to Al Qaeda, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, who also took refuge in Pakistan have reappeared, Afghan security officials said. Local journalists have seen some of them. The officials, who have captured some of the insurgents, accuse Pakistan’s intelligence agency, Al Qaeda and even Iran of supporting the resurgence. Pakistan and Iran routinely deny supporting the insurgency.

Whether it is the influence of foreign fighters, or the growing capability of the Taliban and another regional militant group, Hezb-e-Islami, Western officials say the insurgency in Kunduz has grown more sophisticated, mounting coordinated suicide car bombings and ambushes.

“Clearly this year we have seen much better fighters, capable of complex attacks,” said one Western official.

Kunduz, a fertile farming region interspersed with desert, has had a trajectory similar to that of many other provinces, as the insurgents extended their hold through calculated intimidation and exploitation of tribal ties.

By the spring of 2008, militants started appearing in groups of as many as 100, with some foreign fighters among them, local residents and officials said.

They assassinated local leaders, including a Pashtun Koran reader who was beheaded, and quickly took control of several Pashtun areas, forcing ethnic Uzbeks from their homes in some districts, said Wakil Qara Qushlik, a local leader who had to flee his village last year.

The Taliban were at first more subtle with their fellow Pashtuns. A group of them came last spring without guns to introduce themselves to one prominent Pashtun family in Chahardara, and asked for support. They were worried about their own safety then, one family member said, asking not to be named. “They were behaving very well with the people,” he said. “They stopped thieves, and brought law and order to the area.”

But as elsewhere, that changed as the Taliban gained power and confidence, he said. This year the Taliban arrived with “lots of cash, new dollars and guns,” and began collecting ushr, an Islamic tax, from farmers.

Now, he said, they come to his home and demand to be fed, and have begun an intimidation campaign against his family for not supporting them at the beginning.

“It is dangerous for us if a guerrilla force has an income,” said General Daoud, who as deputy interior minister has responsibility for counternarcotics efforts.
Drug smugglers with an eye to Kunduz’s border with Tajikistan have jumped into an alliance with the Taliban to create instability that allows their illegal business to thrive, he said.

The former Taliban government was so harsh that many Afghans offered little resistance. “What surprises is how easily people capitulate when they come because the memories are so fresh,” the Western official said..

Shoaib, 25, a villager from the Archi District who moved to the city of Kunduz to find work, said: “We are forced to be happy with the Taliban. They force the people in each street to prepare 10 guns and men. They say come and do jihad.”

Afghanistan – Graveyard of Empires

On Jan. 1, 1842, the British garrison in Kabul began to withdraw. Just three years earlier Britain had occupied Kabul, a strategic point for the defense of India, but could no longer endure the incessant killing of its senior officials and officers. During the withdrawal, a long procession of 4,000 troops and 10,000 civilians crossing snow-covered valleys and hills was ambushed by Afghan warriors. Fewer than 40 survivors reached the destination of Jalalabad.

Following this humiliating and bloody retreat, Britain again attacked Afghanistan in 1878. This time it was to contain Russia, which had expanded its influence into Afghanistan’s northern areas while Britain withdrew. After several fierce battles, Britain occupied Afghanistan again. And again the occupiers were slaughtered, recalling the nightmare of 40 years previous. Britain withdrew most of its forces from Afghanistan in 1880, but maintained control of its diplomatic rights. After another war in 1919, Britain finally ceded Afghanistan self-determination in foreign affairs.

Located at the heart of Eurasia, Afghanistan has been a crossroads between East-West trade and human exchange since ancient times. The Persian Empire under Alexander the Great invaded the region, followed in succession by the Mongols and Mughal Empire. In the 19th century, Afghanistan was the center stage of a struggle for supremacy between the British and Russian empires. Foreign troops always sustained high casualties on account of the strong resentment of local fighters and the inhospitable geography of rugged mountains and arid deserts.

Afghanistan was dubbed “the graveyard of empires,” and it lived up to that nickname again during the 10-year invasion and occupation by the Soviet Union beginning in 1979. To support the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan which seized power in a 1978 coup, the Soviets stationed 100,000 troops in the country. After long and bloody resistance from U.S.-backed anti-government Mujahideen, or “freedom fighters”, the Soviet Union withdrew. Their sacrifice was 14,453 dead and 53,753 wounded. The disaster precipitated the collapse of the Soviet empire.

The Taliban, a group of Islamic fundamentalists that seized power in 1996, was deprived of power when it offered bases to Al Qaeda, masterminds of the Sept. 11 attacks, and was subsequently attacked by U.S. forces. The Taliban, in an apparent attempt to continue Afghanistan’s long tradition of confounding foreign powers, has ceaselessly attacked foreign troops and kidnapped foreigners. Now the Taliban has kidnapped a large group of Korean volunteers, and executed one of them. They are sacrificing Korean volunteers who went to Afghanistan in order to treat Afghans suffering the ravages of war and teach them so that they may rebuild their country. Even few Afghans would regard such barbarity as a part of their struggle against foreign forces.

I remember a famous female country and western singer making the statement: “I sang country when country wasn’t popular.”

I was a Chief Observer in a unit that decoded and plotted intercepted Soviet MESRANS for synoptic analysis and nuclear radiological fallout forecasts at selected military sites. I was stationed in the Holy Land for more than a year in 1952 and 53, where I gained my insight in Muslim culture and religious beliefs. I retired from the USAF/NSA IN 1971. I then graduated from the Missionary Baptist Seminary in Little Rock, Arkansas and Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Arkansas.

I finished my first book, “Tectonic Chaos” in 1974 and it was published by Diamond W. Graphics in 1976 while I was doing graduate work at Arkansas Tech University n the Physical Sciences.

I have been Pastor of Dardanelle MBC for some 40 years. There are three excellent Preachers and a wonderful Deacon in the church along with a loving congregation. I had a good laugh when President Obama gave his first speech in the Middle East and later indicated he had broken the back of Al-Qaeta. It is apparent to our allies he has no idea as a novice how to deal with Middle East Islamists.

The Middle East seed of conflict was planted long ago when Sarah did not have faith in God to provide the seed he had promised Abraham, but came up with a plan to help God bring the seed through Hagar the Egyptian. The first recorded conflict between Isaac, the promised seed, and Ishmael, the self-help seed, is found in Genesis 21:9-12, and it has been going on ever since. The coming conflict between the descendants of the man Israel and the descendants of Hagar and Keturah is setting up in the Middle East at the present time, being driven by the flames of the success of the Islamic Jihad extremists before the eyes of the Muslim world. All these seeds of Abraham through Sarah, Hagar, and Keturah are headed down a path from which they cannot turn.

Genesis 21:9-12 – And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. [10] Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac. [11] And the thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his son. [12] And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.

The final conflict of the descendant seeds of Isaac’s son Israel and his 12 sons, with the descendant seeds of Ishmael through his 12 sons, is not in the far distant future, and the spirit of Islamic Jihad is growing among the descendants of the 12 sons of Ishmael, who have “mingled” with the descendants of the six sons of Abraham through Keturah.

Daniel 2:42-45 – And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. [43] And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. [44] And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

“These kings” of verse 44 are the 10 Arab toes of verses 42 and 43. Christ will bring in his eternal kingdom on this earth will he returns to end the battle of Armageddon.

I Thessalonians 3:13 – To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

Zechariah 14:9 – And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.

Iraq-Based Jihad Appears to Seek Broader Horizons

Over the last two years, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has risen to prominence on the front lines of the anti-American fight in Iraq. But American intelligence officials say that Zarqawi, a Jordanian, long ago set his sights more broadly on an Islamic Jihad extending to the Mediterranean. The American officials said Thursday they had no reason to doubt a claim of responsibility for Wednesday’s bombings in Jordan issued by Zarqawi’s organization, Al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia. Zarqawi has seen a widening insurgency as an opportunity and American intelligence officials say it is one that he has carefully nurtured.

Zarqawi has long harbored deep hatred for Jordan’s Hashemite monarchy and his organization has maintained roots there. An American counterterrorism official said that Zarqawi’s longstanding goals include the establishment of a single Islamic state throughout the Levant. Zarqawi himself outlined those goals in a 2004 letter to top al-Qaeda leaders that was intercepted by the American military. “We know from God’s religion that the true, decisive battle between infidelity and Islam is in this land,” Zarqawi said, referring to what he called “Greater Syria.”

Zarqawi has succeeded in enlisting support from Iraqi militants as well as foreigners, and he has benefited from an influx of jihadists from Saudi Arabia, other Persian Gulf countries, and, increasingly, from North African countries including Sudan, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. (New York Times)

THE 7TH TRUMPET RAPTURE AND JUDGMENT FOLLOWING IT
I Corinthians 15:51,52 – Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, [52] In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Revelation 14:6 – And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the EVERLASTING gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
Here we are in Chapter 14, a parenthetical chapter in the Revelation, and John sees a heavenly messenger fly in the midst of Heaven, with the everlasting gospel to preach unto earth’s tribulation period inhabitants.
The word translated “EVERLASTING” is “aionios.” It is an adjective – A word that describes the properties, characteristics, and qualities of the gospel – time in its duration that is constant, abiding, forever, denoting not belonging to what is transitory. It does not mean the gospel will be preached eternally – It means the results of receiving it are eternal, everlasting, forever. As an adjective, it describes the character of the noun, which is the “gospel.” When one believes, receives, accepts the gospel, he or she receives the EVERLASTING benefits of its character, having been passed from under the condemnation of God EVERLASTINGLY, as well as being EVERLASTINGLY passed from spiritual death to ETERNAL SPIRITUAL life.
John 5:24 – Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, HATH EVERLASTING life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
The character of God is EVERLASTING as is his Son’s character. The character of God continues in all of his children EVERLASTINGLY.
John 12:50 – And I know that his commandment is life EVERLASTING: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

The EVERLASTING gospel did not begin in the New Testament. It came into existence before the foundation of the world. And it has always been the promise of the Seed, Christ Jesus. God knew before he ever made man that man would make the wrong choice, and thereby need a Savior.
Ephesians 1:3,4 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: [4] According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
The first application of the promise of the Seed is found in the Garden of Eden, immediately after Adam and Eve disobeyed God.
Genesis 3:15 – And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
The EVERLASTING gospel is the good news promise of God made here in simplistic Old Testament format. It did not begin in the New Testament. It came into existence by name, and as the “better” covenant or promise with the arrival, the ministry, the sacrifice, the death, and the resurrection of the Old Testament Lamb Seed of God, the man Christ Jesus. The gospel has always had the true characteristic of EVERLASTING because it has always been an unconditional covenant. However, the extent of the good news, that it was totally by the grace of God in his promised seed, was not able to be completely understood until the Seed had totally fulfilled every jot and tittle of its requirements for all who would receive him as the full atonement for all their sins – That is why it is good news and why it is a “better” covenant – because now the believer is able to understand that Christ fulfilled it for him, and that the salvation in the covenant is totally by the grace that was, and is, in God’s promised Seed.
The unconditional covenant of God’s Seed promise was announced immediately after Adam and Eve had sinned and broken their spiritual union with God – They both DIED SPIRITUALLY. God immediately promised he would send a Seed to crush the power of the Devil’s hold on their souls by stepping on his head, but advised that the Seed’s own body would be bruised in so doing.

Isaiah 53:5 – But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
When Cain arrived they naturally thought God meant their first seed would fulfill verse 15, but when he rose up and slew the second seed, Abel, they knew neither of them was the promised one from God.
Genesis 4:1-3 – And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord. [2] And she again bare his brother Abel.
So they waited for the third seed, still thinking he might be the one promised of God. But after Seth came a new problem arose – Seth had a son, Enos. So was Seth or Enos the promised Seed? It began to dawn on them that the promised Seed might be a distant descendant of Seth. They did the only thing they could do by faith. They began to trust in the Lord that he would one day send the Seed he promised and, while they waited, the ones who believed God’s promise began to call on the name of the Lord.
Genesis 4:25,26 – And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another SEED instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. [26] And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: THEN began men to call upon the name of the Lord.
And believers have been doing that ever since by faith in the promise of God.
Romans 10:17 – So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10:13 – For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
It is a better covenant because now we know the name of the Seed upon whom we are to call, and we know how he died for all our sins, and lives in heaven as the only intercessor for those sins.
Acts 4:12 – Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Hebrews 10:4-18 – For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. [5] Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: [6] In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. [7] Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. [8] Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; [9] Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. [10] By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. [18] Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
The characteristic of the promise is EVERLASTING life in the promised Seed, who gave those who call on his name the characteristic of his life. And the very character of his life is EVERLASTING. Those who do come to him honor him because they believe his words. Those who don’t come do not believe him and dishonor him.
John 5:39-41 – Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. [40] And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. [41] I receive not honour from men.
John 5:21-23 – For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. [22] For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: [23] That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. One or Two Wars Before Armageddon?

As a young man, living in the pre-Hal Linsey books age, I was taught that only one war occurred during the “latter days” before Armageddon. It was a war that began in the Middle East when the antichrist first attacked the nation of Israel, and ended some 3 and ½ years later with the final battle of this Gentile age – Armageddon. But I now find myself surrounded by a large array of preachers and teachers who are convinced that the war led by Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and found in Ezekiel 38 and 39, occurs before the war that commences some 3 and ½ years before the battle of Armageddon, and that the antichrist is not Gog, but comes out of the war led by Gog, and then leads 10 European Union nations against Israel. They teach that when Gog and his armies come against Israel they will be slaughtered, and that Israel will be absolutely successful in thoroughly routing them. Perhaps I overlooked it, but in all my years of looking in many old musty religious archives, I never found a manuscript published before 1812 that taught there were two back-to-back wars just before the battle of Armageddon. Perhaps some do exist, but I never found one prior to 1812. It would seem to me that the arrival of Napoleon in Europe set the stage for a shift from bringing the antichrist out of the southern flank of the old Roman Empire to a new scheme of bringing him out of the northern flank. This shift necessitated the invention of two wars. I do not believe the shift should ever have been made. I believe the attack of the antichrist is found in the following Scriptures, and I believe the initial attack by 10 Islamic nations is made some 3 & ½ years before the end of this age at Armageddon. I do not believe Russia (land of Magog) comes down until final battle of Armageddon. Before 1740 the teaching that the “he’s” in Daniel 9:27 represented the Antichrist did not exist. They taught it represented Christ. When they first began to teach it represented the Antichrist after 1740 it turned the world of prophetic teaching upside down in the eighteen hundreds. Very few people realize how most of our prophetic teachings radiate from interpretation of Daniel 9:27.

Ezekiel 38:1,2 – And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, [2] Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,

Gog is a person, the antichrist. Magog is a land, the land of Magog. God tells Ezekiel to set his face against a person, Gog, and against a land, Magog, which is Russia. Gog is NOT the chief prince of Magog (Russia). He is the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. At the time of Ezekiel’s writings the descendants of Magog were settled in Russia, while the descendants of Meshech and Tubal were settled in Greater Syria. The antichrist will come out of Greater Syria to launch the initial attack. Some 3 and ½ years later Magog (Russia) will come down to join him at Armageddon to wipe out the Nation of Israel.

Ezekiel 38:10,11 – Thus saith the Lord God; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought: [11] And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,

It is the Palestinians who are walled in, not the Israelis. The Israelis are confident their IDF and IAF can whip any Arab force in the Middle East, and who dwell with a mind set of “Peace and Safety,” such that they are at rest, thinking they cannot be defeated in a conventional war. However, Israel will be driven into the Negev, and will be surrounded there by Islamic forces of Antichrist for three and a half years.

Daniel 11:41 – He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.

Revelation 12:6 – And the woman (Israel) fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Daniel 7:24,25 – And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. [25] And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Zechariah 13:8,9 – And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. [9] And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.

Revelation 13:5,6 – And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. [6] And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

Revelation 17:12.13 – And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. [13] These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.

I believe that the following names all apply to the antichrist: He is Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal in Ezekiel 38 and 39, the eleventh horn in Daniel 7, the king of the north in Daniel 11:40, the Assyrian in Micah 5, the seventh wounded head on the beast in Revelation 13, and the eighth head on the beast in Revelation 17.

The 3 and ½ year war in all accounts follows a certain pattern from start to finish.

(1) The initial attack occurs, and is successful.
(2) After Jerusalem falls, then Israel is driven into the Negev
(3) The Lord leaves Israel surrounded in the Negev for 3 and ½ years.
(4) God protects Israel in the Negev during that period.
(5) Antichrist (Gog) attacks Israel in the Negev and God fights for Her – Russia (The land of Magog), China, and all the known world of Daniel’s day come down at his request to help him destroy Israel in the Negev.
(6) The Lord leaves most of the enemy bodies on the hills of Israel at the final battle of Armageddon.

Ezekiel 38:8,9 (1) – After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them. [9] Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.

Zechariah 13:8 (1) – And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

Zechariah 14:2,3 (2) – For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. [3] Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

Daniel 7:25 (3) – And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Ezekiel 39:1-5 (5) – Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: [2] And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel: [3] And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand. [4] Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. [5] Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord God.

Revelation 19:17-21 (5) – And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; [18] That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. [19] And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. [20] And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. [21] And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

To make a long story short – I believe there is only one war, the war that begins when Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, attacks Israel, and ends three and one-half years later when Magog (Russia), along with all of Europe, Eurasia, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, comes down to join him against Israel at the final battle of Armageddon – Only to find the bodies of their great armies end up as buzzard bait on the hills of Israel.

BUT AM I PREPARED TO BE WRONG? CERTAINLY! WHAT WILL I DO IF THERE ARE TWO WARS? WELL, I WILL JUST SAY I WAS WRONG, AND WAIT FOR ANTICHRIST TO COME OUT OF THE FIRST WAR, THAT IS, IF I AM STILL HERE.

BUT WHAT IF THERE IS ONLY ONE WAR? WELL, ONLY ONE THIRD OF ISRAEL WILL SURVIVE, JERUSALEM WILL FALL, ISRAEL WILL BE DRIVEN INTO THE NEGEV, AND YOU WILL BE WAITING FOR AN ANTICHRIST THAT IS ALREADY ON THE SCENE, THAT IS, IF YOU ARE STILL HERE.

My advice is to be prepared for either eventuality, even one that may be quite different from how many of these verses are commonly interpreted. I think that falls under the category of “watching.”

I was stationed in the Holy Land for a year in 1952 and 53. I found the Army of Israel to have great attitude, morale, and morality. It was very patriotic and what I would classify as “lean and mean.” They had won the 1948 war against great odds and were enthusiastic about building a homeland for the Jews. Since that time I’ve made trips to Israel and rejoiced with her as she turned Israel into a picture of prosperity, fertility, and beauty. However, after the 1973 war I began to notice a gradual change in the overall attitude of the younger generation entering the IDF. I took time on each trip to talk with young members of the IDF, and discovered a change in commitment from the men and women of the 1952 to 1973 era.

Because of Israel’s great victories in 1948, 1965, 1967, and 1973, many believe her to be invincible but they will be surprised, for this time the sheer number of Arab nations aligned with the King of the North (Mahdi Antichrist) will push the King of the South (Israel) into the Negev Wilderness.

The endless debate on the defense budget, as well as the storm surrounding the payments to yeshiva students, touches on a topic with which Israeli parents with a child in the IDF are more than familiar: the allowance that they have to hand out to their serving sons and daughters on a regular basis.

Most say that the miniscule, symbolic sum their children earn from the army is simply not enough to cover their monthly expenses, such as socks and thermal underwear for winter, a night out with their friends at the weekend, and certainly not food for those who do not eat every meal on the base.

“A soldier serves the state and it costs him money,” says MK Elazar Stern of Hatnua, the former head of the IDF Human Resources department, who is behind a drive to change the current situation.

The issue, which affects many families in Israel, is raised regularly. This week, lawmakers discussed a request to transfer soldiers’ salaries to the Finance Ministry, on the grounds that the wages are “choking” the defense budget.

‘Taking advantage’

Stern is one a series of lawmakers from across the spectrum who are behind a bill proposal to grant a bonus to soldiers in the final third of their national service, depending on the nature of their role: A soldier serving inside the country would receive 1,500 shekels; a soldier in a combat support role would receive 2,000 shekels, and combat troops would get 3,000 shekels.

The bill also has the support of fellow Hatnua MKs Amram Mitzna, David Tsur and Meir Sheetrit, as well as Orly Levy-Abekasis and Robert Ilatov of Yisrael Beiteinu, and Zvulun Kalfa of Habayit Hayehudi.

“The living expenses that soldiers get today is insulting. At the moment we are taking advantage of their service,” Stern told Ynet. Noting that it would cost several hundred million shekels per year to remedy, he said it was a small price to pay. “So what?” he asked. “These are the nation’s soldiers.”

In January, soldiers’ salaries rose by 20 percent, so that non-combat soldiers now earn 400 shekels per month, combat support soldiers make 600 shekels per month, and combat troops 850 shekels per month.

Rafi Luzon from Carmiel has had experience of sons in the army. At the moment, he has one son in the Nahal Brigade as a combat solder, while his older child had had a non-combat role.

“My soldier son makes do with a little, and those 850 shekels are enough for him,” Luzon says. “He comes home for a brief weekend twice a month, and the money is enough for two or three nights out. Truth be told, we cover his other costs, although it’s not a significant amount.”

Even so, his older son served in a unit that allowed him to return home each day. His expenses were higher, and his salary lower.

“I see the problem for other solders,” says Luzon. “They come from underprivileged families, and serve in non-combat units. They really do have a problem because they can’t for instance eat all of their meals in the army, and need to finance themselves in the hours and days that they are at home.”

Tammy Atia from Kibbutz Degania Bet is mother to Nitzan, who enlisted about six weeks ago and is currently completing a training course.

“The 350 shekels that she gets each month is not enough for anything, even as pocket money,” Atia says. “When these soldiers come home every once in a while they are entitled to go out, to treat themselves to something. I give my daughter 100 shekels every time she comes home, otherwise she couldn’t go out and have fun in the short time she’s home. What about parents who can’t afford to do that? I know soldiers who have to go out to work when they come home on Friday and Saturday to help out their families.”

The IDF’s response to parents makes clear how little the military can do. “The IDF, in conjunction with the Defense Ministry, is working to resolve the amount that soldiers doing compulsory military service receive as living allowance,” said the IDF Spokesman’s office. “The necessary adjustment will be made in relation to changes in the cost of living, and as part of a comprehensive review and overhaul of the compulsory service model.”

The army spokesman noted the 20 percent pay rise implemented in January, and said that the IDF was looking at other ways to compensate its soldiers. The army, the spokesman said, already offers financial aid to struggling soldiers and their families, including benefits and loans.

The Defense Ministry declined to comment on the bill proposal or claims from soldiers’ families, on the grounds that the IDF response included the ministry too.

MK Robert Ilatov says that the current situation has serious, even legal, implications for the serving soldiers.

“We’ve seen the figures and know what’s happening – how many serving soldiers engage in criminal activity for financial reasons and how many try to move to non-combat roles so they can go out to work,” he says. “It’s a serious problem. The allowance that soldiers get has not been adjusted since 1986, and as a result the state is indirectly levying an extra tax on each soldier.”

“I’ll give you some examples,” Ilatov offers. “Soap that cost 40 agorot in ’86 now costs 3 shekels and 40 agorot. A can of coke cost 26 agorot and today it’s five shekels. A sandwich cost 36 agorot then and today its 12 shekels. A pack of cigarettes cost one shekel now costs 26 shekels on average. Families are supporting the soldiers instead of the state, and the army calls it service.”

Hadar from Herzliya is the mother of a soldier completing his national service, and says she doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry over the money he gets.

“This allowance is not enough for anything,” she says. “My son does meaningful service. He’s on the base for long hours. I spend money on him like I do on my son in high school. Someone who gives three years of his life to the country should not be getting just an allowance.

“They simply need to pay him a salary.”
