But many veterans of the process remain skeptical about the prospects for progress given the yawning gaps in each side’s public positions, saying both are mainly participating in order to appease the American administration and improve their broader international standing.

Al-Jazeera Host: Arabs Should Separate Religion And Politics, Discard Outdated Ideologies

In an August 25, 2013 article in the Qatari daily Al-Sharq, Qatari journalist Faisal Al-Qassem, who hosts the program “The Opposite Direction” on Al-Jazeera TV, called to distance religion, which is pure, from politics, which is filthy, and claimed that the West had made substantial achievements only after separating church and state and distancing itself from rigid and outdated ideologies. He stressed that, in today’s world, there is no place for such ideologies, whether religious or secular, especially since modern man is interested less in ideology or spiritualism and more in fulfilling his material needs and desires. Hence, today’s parties win elections not based on their philosophy, but rather based on their ability to meet the public’s consumerist interests. As examples he presented the Muslim Brotherhood party in Egypt and Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s party in Turkey. The former, he said, failed due to its adherence to rigid religious ideas, whereas the latter succeeded not because of its religious orientation but rather because of its economic achievements.

The following are excerpts from the article:

“The West developed politically, socially, and culturally only after separating politics from the church, and the principles of this world from those of the next. [In doing so, the West] acted according to the Prophet [Muhammad’s] hadith – ‘You know best in matters of your world’ – and began to swiftly transition from the Dark Ages towards progress and supremacy in all fields.

“China, too, would have never approached [the position of] economic world leader had it remained enslaved to [outmoded] ideological doctrines. Incidentally, most of the Chinese have no religion. The new Chinese have [also] distanced themselves from the directives of Mao Zedong and ignore them; nowadays they are like his embalmed body in Tiananmen Square [in terms of their communism] – just a body without a spirit. They have grown beyond the ossified ideals of the Party. They have begun to operate freely, far from outdated terms and ideologies, and have worked wonders. Their goal hasn’t been to implement rigid slogans; rather, they have aspired to implement practical development programs that would serve the individual and would not exploit his spirit and his political, cultural, social, and religious inclinations.

“If our countries and our political, ideological, cultural, and economic elites want growth, they must distance themselves from dogmatic parties, [whether] religious or secular in their ideology. In today’s world there is no room even for secular ideologies, let alone for occult ideologies that take religion in an irrelevant direction, while doing it great harm. Religion is a pure world whereas politics is a dirty one. How can something pure enter the world of filth and not sully itself?…

“Western parties have mostly become parties that adopt first-rate economic and consumer-oriented programs, while keeping themselves light years distant from the world of outdated ideologies. If we examine the parties that win elections in the U.S. and [other] Western countries, we find that they do not win based on their spiritual, ideological, or cultural orientation, but rather based on their development programs and socioeconomic [plans]. Man in this era has become a consumer, whether we like it or not. He has been programmed to consume, whether we like this and agree to this or not. It follows that he is totally inclined to vote for parties that show interest in his belly, his pleasures, and his growing socioeconomic needs. He [does not vote] for those who sell him partisan and religious slogans. We have noticed in recent years that many sectors in the West have changed their party-affiliation based on secular-consumerist interests…

“I wish Arab parties would learn from the recent Egyptian experience, in which a party with a religious orientation rose to power. Some will undoubtedly say that the [Muslim Brotherhood’s] Freedom and Justice Party in Egypt was a victim of a grand plot [meant] to distance Islamists from power. This may be true, but the clear failure of this party to hold onto the reins of power following the revolution caused many Muslim Egyptians to distance themselves from it in heart and spirit, despite its Islamic slogans and religious orientation. Why? Because, in this global era, even Arabs longer buy into ideological slogans, whether secular or religious. Everyone is [now] influenced by globalization and the international media. Man has become global, and is concerned, first and foremost, with his consumerist needs before his spiritual ones. How can we expect a modern man to be spiritual when he cannot make ends meet, and when he sees the peoples of the world enjoy all that is good and delicious from among the inventions of modern culture in food, drink, and technology?

“Please, do not use Erdogan’s party in Turkey as an example [of a religious-ideological party that remains in power], because the answer will be the same. The Turkish Justice and Development Party did not succeed because of its religious orientation, but rather because of its secular ones – because it brought economic growth to Turkey… This caused even atheists to vote for it, because it met many of their social and consumerist needs…

“In conclusion, we can only repeat the famous words of [the late Egyptian jurisprudent] Sheikh Al-Sha’arawy: ‘I hope that religion will reach the politicians and that the men of religion do not reach politics.'”

Inmates Bullied Into Converting To Islam

The Prison Officers Association says the increase in forced conversions is down to the growing power of Muslim gangs.

Sky News has learned that increasing numbers of British inmates are being bullied into converting to Islam while in jail.

The Prison Officers Association says it is symptomatic of the growing power and influence of Muslim gangs in prison.

However, there are also concerns that some of those converts could be radicalised by more extremist elements in prison.

Sky News spoke to one young woman who said her brother was being bullied by members of a Muslim gang, who were trying to force him into converting to Islam.

The woman did not want to be identified for fear of reprisals against her brother, who is serving a sentence in excess of 10 years in a high security prison in England.

She said: “He just looks like a broken man … he’s tearful on visits. I’m just really scared for him.”

She also claimed the bullying had taken a more violent turn: “He’s been physically assaulted. He’s had black eyes.

“In the showers, he got threatened with a knife. He’s not going to back down. He’s not going to convert for anyone.”

She added: “He just spends his time in hiding in his cell. He’s got at least another five years to serve. I don’t know how much longer he can hold out.”

Official sources acknowledge forced conversions are a problem in the country’s prisons.

How large the problem is remains unclear, as inmates are often afraid to report such intimidation for fear of reprisals.

Joe Chapman, a former prison officer who now acts as a prison law consultant, believes the problem is on the increase.

“I think it could be a huge problem. Previously I’d probably only worked in about a dozen or so prisons as an officer,” Mr Chapman said.

“But this job takes me to 40 or 50 over the year, throughout the country. It’s become obvious to me that it’s a growing problem.

“About half a dozen of my clients have directly reported problems with being forced to convert … those that weren’t Muslim when they came in and those that were and have been forced to look at more radical ideas about their faith.”

It is the potential route to extremism that will be of most concern to the authorities.

There is no automatic pathway but Jihadist groups do focus on the vulnerable – and new converts in the prison environment offer them a captive audience.

Former Home Secretary Lord Reid told Sky News: “When they arrive in prison, inmates often feel isolated, lacking in identity.

“They don’t have family groups and kinships around them. On top of that, very often there’s a need for protection, a feeling that you’ve arrived in prison, you’re on your own but there are people who appear like you, who give you a set of beliefs but also the protection of being in a gang.

“It is a very, very fertile ground for recruitment and proselytization and radicalisation in prison.”

There are currently around 11,200 Muslims in prison in England and Wales.
That figure is about 13% of the total prison population and is far higher than in the wider community, where Muslims make up less than 5% of the population.

Around a third of Muslim inmates will have converted in prison, but sources say most are willing converts.

A mild earthquake was felt in the Lake Kinneret and Hula Valley region at around 2:30 am Friday night, the Geophysical Institute of Israel has confirmed.

According to the institute, the quake – the second in Israel this week – registered a light 3.6 on the Richter scale. No injuries or significant damage was reported.

Residents from the area emailed Ynet and reported their experience: “The windows and beds really moved,” one wrote.

A mild earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale also hit northern Israel at around 9:20 pm Thursday night. No reports of injury or damage emerged and the Geophysical Institute of Israel said the quake’s epicenter was in Lake Kinneret.

Last Saturday a 6.4-magnitude earthquake which originated west of the island of Crete was felt in Israel. The center of the quake was 22.5 miles below the seabed 43 miles west of Chania on Crete, the US Geological Survey said. Israelis reported to experiencing the quake, mainly in locations in the center and south of Israel.

I have taught for many years about the interconnecting fault structure that connects Italy, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, and the Red Sea. It is the great earthquake of Revelation 6:12 in the Jordan Rift Valley that will produce a chain reaction of great pressure releases in this fault structure from Israel to Turkey to Rome, which will announce the beginning of the last three and one-half years of the tribulation period. The 6:12 earthquake is the first of many in the book of Revelation.

Revelation 6:12 – And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

The article by the Associated Press and the JPost Staff in the Jerusalem Post, which follows, is perhaps a preview of the area most affected by the Revelation 6:12 earthquake, but the coming earthquake will have a magnitude between 8 and 9, and will set off a chain of earthquakes of the same magnitude along it from one end to the other.

Earthquake Shakes Greece, Felt in Israel

A powerful earthquake shook Greece on Sunday and was felt as far away as the Middle East. Minor damage was reported in southern Greece, and authorities on the island of Crete said three people were slightly injured.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute, which initially gave a magnitude of 6.4, later amended it to 6.9 and said the epicenter was located beneath the seabed, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) south of Athens and 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of the island of Kithira.

“It was a very powerful quake which shook all of Greece. There have been dozens of aftershocks, four with a magnitude of 5,” said institute head Giorgos Stavrakakis. “The quake occurred deep undersea and that’s what saved us.”

The earthquake occurred at 1:34 p.m. and was felt as far away as in Cairo, Egypt, about 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) southeast of the epicenter, as well as in Amman, Jordan.

Similarly, the Geophysical Institute of Israel reported that the quake was felt in Israel as well.

The quake was felt across southern Italy – in particular around Naples and Sicily – but there were no reports of damage or injuries, Italian news reports said. Some people ran into the streets and others phoned civil protection agencies or the fire department seeking information.

Clarice Nassif Ransom, a USGS spokeswoman in Washington, said scientists project that as many as six million people may have felt the earthquake.

“This is an area which regularly gives out strong quakes so we are not surprised. But we don’t expect any serious aftershocks,” Stavrakakis said.

Authorities on Kithira said the airport and about 50 old buildings had also been slightly damaged.

“We’ve had some damage to old buildings but nothing serious has occurred, and we have no reports of injuries,” said Kithira mayor Andreas Kalligeros.

The US Geological Survey, based in Colorado, and the National Earthquake Information Center in Denver gave a preliminary magnitude of 6.7, while the University of Thessaloniki, which also has a geodynamic institute, reported a preliminary magnitude of 6.9. The reason for the discrepancies in magnitude was not immediately clear.
