ISAIAH 11:11-13 – And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. [12] And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. Isaiah 11:14 – But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them.

This is the flying of Israel as a bird of prey through Gaza (Home of the ancient race of uncircumcised Gentile Philistines on the shoulder of the Mediterranean Sea) to the River of Egypt in northern Sinai (Look at a map showing the land of the Philistines and the River of Egypt in northern Sinai that flows into the Mediterranean, and you can see the curved “shoulder” of land on the Mediterranean. IDF & IAF will flow west out of the Negev to conquer land to this River, which is the westernmost end of the land grant God promised to Abraham. The IDF & IAF will also drive east out of the Negev all the way to the Euphrates River, which is the easternmost end of the Abraham Land Grant. If you will find a Bible Map from the times of the writings of Isaiah, you will discover Edom, Moab, and Ammon fit perfectly inside today’s Kingdom of Jordan.

Hundreds of Syrians have fled coastal areas where activists accuse government forces of carrying out massacres in a campaign of sectarian cleansing.

Footage of mutilated and burned bodies, allegedly from the town of Baniyas, have been posted online.

Activists said 77 people, including 20 from the same family, died, a day after 72 were killed in nearby al-Bayda.

The government said it had fought back “terrorist groups” and restored peace and security to the area.

Meanwhile, Israel has said its warplanes carried out an air strike on Syria targeting weapons heading to Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

It is the second time this year that the Israelis have carried out such strikes.

‘Militia involved’

Activists have reported two massacres in two days in the coastal area of central Syria.

They say the first was at the Sunni village of al-Bayda, which was overrun by regime forces on Thursday.

Activists groups have named 72 people they say were massacred in al-Bayda, some of them women and children.

Now they are reporting similar scenes at the Ras al-Nabaa quarter of the nearby coastal town of Baniyas, where they say at least 77 people died.

They have posted gruesome video clips to back up their claims.

Syrian TV reports on army operations along the coast, but claims they were to “drive back terrorists”

Foreign news organisations are severely restricted in Syria, so accounts and videos from activists are difficult to verify.

The BBC’s Jim Muir in neighbouring Lebanon says the clips show the bloodied and tangled bodies of women and children, some of them mutilated or partly incinerated.

Hundreds of families are reported to have fled Baniyas southwards towards the city of Tartus, but activists say they have been blocked from taking shelter there.

The pro-government militia known as the shabbiha are widely reported to be involved in the operation.

Our correspondent says there is clearly a strong sectarian dimension to the reported actions.

Local activist and opposition groups have accused the government of launching a campaign of sectarian cleansing, he adds.

The operation is also being seen as a sign of President Bashar al-Assad’s determination to fight on and consolidate his government’s position.

Mr Assad made a public appearance on Saturday at Damascus University, state media reports.

It broadcast showed footage of him unveiling a statue honouring “martyred students”, surrounded by bodyguards and crowds of people.

International efforts to tackle the violence have recently focused on the alleged use of chemical weapons by the regime.

US President Barack Obama has described such actions as a “red line”, but he said on Friday that he did not envisage a situation where US troops would be sent to Syria.

The US has floated the idea in recent weeks of arming the rebel forces.

Analysts say the US and its allies are also discussing action including air strikes to enforce a no-fly zone, but Syria’s ally Russia is strongly opposed to such measures.

In a statement, the US state department said it was “appalled” by the latest reported incidents.

“We strongly condemn atrocities against the civilian population and reinforce our solidarity with the Syrian people,” it added.

“As the Assad regime’s violence against innocent civilians escalates, we will not lose sight of the men, women, and children whose lives are being so brutally cut short.

“Those responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law and serious violations and abuses of human rights law must be held accountable.”

In advance of Orthodox Easter, which will be celebrated by Egypt’s Copts in early May 2013, fatwas have been issued by a Muslim Brotherhood (MB) official and by officials in Egypt’s Salafi stream forbidding Muslims from greeting Christians on their religious holidays. It should be mentioned that these fatwas are a departure from the practice of past MB leaders, who sent greeting cards to the Patriarch and Coptic figures on their holidays, including Easter, and dispatched representatives to greet Copts in churches.

Fatwas Forbidding Wishing Christians Well On Their Holidays

Member of MB General Guide’s Office: Greet Christians Only on Christmas, Not Easter

In late April 2013, ‘Abd Al-Rahman Al-Barr, a member of the MB general guide’s office, who is often referred to as the movement’s mufti, issued a fatwa forbidding Muslims from greeting Christians on their religious holidays. Al-Barr told the Egyptian daily Al-Yawm Al-Sabi’ on April 28, 2013 that according to the shari’a, Copts must not be greeted for religious ceremonies that contravene the principles of the Muslim faith, and stressed that it is forbidden to greet Copts on the upcoming Easter. He added that it is permitted to greet Copts on everyday occasions, but not religious occasions.

Al-Barr stressed that Easter is contrary to the Muslim faith in the sense that “Jesus did not die and was not crucified, but rather Allah gave him protection from the Jews and raised [Jesus] up to Him… which is why we do not greet anyone for something we strongly believe is wrong. This does not contradict the right of our partners in the homeland to believe what they want or do what they want…” He added that it is permitted to greet Christians on Christmas, or for Muslims to greet non-Muslims with the commonly expressed “May you have a good year.”

The Salafi Front, a Salafi stream known to be close to the MB, also ruled that it is forbidden to greet the Copts on their religious holidays, and even called Muslims who go to churches to greet the Copts on their holidays “sinners.” The Salafi Front’s ruling was harsher and more sweeping; in contrast to the MB, the Salafi Front argued that the ban on greeting Copts applied also to Christmas.

Salafi Front political bureau member Khaled Al-Masri told the Egyptian daily Al-Yawm Al-Sabi’ on April 28, 2013 that a distinction should be made between greetings on religious holidays and greetings on social occasions: “Greeting Copts on their religious holidays such as Christmas and Easter is forbidden by the shari’a, and there is a religious consensus on this… because greeting on these holidays means you recognize holidays you do not believe in, so on what basis do you greet them?” He added: “On social occasions, whether in times of joy like weddings or times of grief like the death of a loved one, it is permitted to comfort and greet them.”

Salafi Front spokesman Dr. Hisham Kamal told Egypt’s Al-Tahrir TV that even a Muslim married to a Christian or Jewish woman cannot greet his wife on her holidays, and that it is even permissible for him to prevent her from participating in these holidays.

Those Who Today Ban Greeting Copts Will Tomorrow Call For Killing Them

How can we ask a Christian to be a productive worker [when he sees] these bizarre fatwas that emphasize differences [among the citizens of Egypt]…

“These people are urging us to abandon the Islamic ship of wasatiyya [middle way] and tolerance, and move to the ship of extremism, [by] treating Christians like second-class citizens.

“These bizarre fatwas lay the foundation for tearing Egypt to pieces and leading it to perdition…”

As world declines to take action, Bashar Assad’s forces give invigorated push, regime remains firmly entrenched in Damascus

Syrian President Bashar Assad and his allies are showing renewed confidence that the momentum in the civil war is shifting in their favor, due in part to the rapid rise of al-Qaeda-linked extremists among the rebels and the world’s reluctance to take forceful action to intervene in the fighting.

His invigorated regime has gone on the offensive – both on the ground and in its portrayal of the conflict as a choice between Assad and the extremists.

Several factors appear to have convinced Assad he can weather the storm: Two years into the uprising against his family’s iron rule, his regime remains firmly entrenched in Damascus, the defection rate from the military has dwindled, and key international supporters Russia and China are still solidly on his side.

Moreover, the regime has benefited from the fallout created by audio distributed last month in which the head of the extremist Jabhat al-Nusra group, one of the most powerful and effective rebel groups in Syria, pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Signs of Assad’s renewed confidence

After dropping largely out of sight following an hour-long speech at the Opera House in central Damascus in January, Assad has appeared in two TV interviews in the past month. His wife, Asma, appeared in public in March for the first time in months, surrounded by women and children for a function honoring mothers.

“I can say, without exaggeration, that the situation in Syria now is better than it was at the beginning of the crisis,” Assad said in an interview with state-run broadcaster Al-Ikhbariya on April l7.

“With time, people became more aware of the dangers of what was happening. … They started to gain a better understanding of the real Syria we used to live in and realized the value of the safety, security and harmony, which we used to enjoy,” he added.

On Wednesday, a smiling Assad made another rare public appearance, visiting a Damascus power station just a day after a bombing in the capital and two days after his prime minister escaped an assassination attempt.

Syrian TV showed Assad, looking confident and wearing a dark business suit, chatting with workers and shaking their hands on May Day.

“They want to scare us, we will not be scared. … They want us to live underground, we will not live underground,” Assad was shown telling a group of workers gathered around him in a garden.

Since the beginning of the uprising in March 2011, Assad’s regime has tried to portray the movement as being driven by what it called terrorists and foreign-backed mercenaries. The government responded with a brutal military crackdown that led many to take up arms to fight back. Gradually, the rebellion turned into an armed insurgency, drawing in radicalized elements and foreign fighters from other countries.

Jabhat al-Nusra, designated a terrorist group by the US, has emerged as one of the most potent fighting forces.

Assad’s regime has seized on the recording of Nusra Front’s leader pledging allegiance to al-Qaeda as proof it is fighting terrorists, prompting some members of the Syrian opposition to claim the audio was faked by the government to tarnish their movement.

Many Syrians acknowledge feeling more secure under Assad

A Christian Syrian tailor who fled last month to Lebanon said at least Assad was a known quantity. He said people fled when “heavily armed and bearded gunmen” from an anti-Assad group arrived in his hometown last month, setting up roadblocks and checking people’s IDs. The tailor insisted on identifying himself only as Amin, his first name, for fear of reprisals from the regime or its opponents.

Despite losing large swaths of territory in northern and eastern Syria, Assad’s military has retained his firm grip on Damascus, his seat of power, and key coastal areas. In recent weeks, his troops have made advances, pushing back rebels in parts of the Damascus suburbs and some areas where rebels regularly fire mortars on the capital.

Inspecting the site of a car bombing Tuesday in Damascus, Interior Minister Mohammed al-Shaar told reporters the attacks in the capital were in response to the “victories and achievements scored by the
Syrian Arab Army on the ground against terrorism.” Al-Shaar himself escaped a bomb that targeted his convoy in December.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, director of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which closely monitors the civil war, said the number of defections from the military as well as political circles has gone “significantly down” in recent months. Those who are now fighting are considered the “hard-core regime supporters” who will stay until the end, he said.

Syrians opposed to Assad accuse him of encouraging and planting extremists in the ranks of the rebellion, including releasing hundreds of jihadis from prison early in the uprising, knowing full well that they were bound to take up arms against it.

The Assad dynasty has long tried to push a secular and nationalist identity in Syria while flirting with extremists when it suited it. In 2003, the Syrian regime was known to be providing safe passage to jihadis to enter Iraq to fight US forces.

Still, the extremists’ role in the civil war has raised alarm among Syrians and officials in the West. Their presence has been among the chief reasons behind international reluctance to arm the rebels.

Allegations that the regime used chemical weapons have not triggered an international response, despite President Barack Obama’s earlier assertion that use of such weapons would be a “game-changer” and a “red line.”

Obama said Tuesday that the evidence available does not yet merit the quick use of US military power.

Russia and China, Assad’s main allies, have stuck by him during the course of the uprising, as have his supporters in the region, Iran and Lebanon’s militant Hezbollah group.

In a further boost, Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech Tuesday that Syria’s “real friends,” including his Iranian-backed group, would intervene on the side of Damascus if needed.
