God, knowing before the foundation of the world that Adam and Eve would disobey him, took on the form of the Passover Lamb Jesus in the Bethlehem manger to fulfill the three offices of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Man has a choice to accept or reject the Lamb as his wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.

Isaiah 9:6,7 – For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. After 10 years in Iraq, did we learn our lessons?

Last week marked the 10th anniversary of the United States invasion of Iraq. It was a war that the country never should have pursued and one from which we ought to have learned some lessons.

Unfortunately, the country seldom learns those lessons.

The costs alone are sobering. Almost 4,500 Americans killed and more than 30,000 wounded, some so severely they will require lifetime care. There is no accurate count on the number of Iraqi civilians killed, wounded and/or left homeless.

The U.S. spent more than $2 trillion, which helped send the country into an economic spiral from which it has yet to recover. The damage done to America’s reputation during 10 years of fighting is obvious. Despite what Americans were led to believe, there were no weapons of mass destruction and al-Qaida had no foothold in Iraq.

Today, al-Qaida is in Iraq and is spreading throughout the Mideast. The war was a great recruiting tool for terrorist groups. They billed it as a war on Islam – which it was not – and young men who had seen their relatives killed or their homes destroyed were easy targets for terrorist recruiters.

The urban fighting in Baghdad and other cities went exactly as many predicted. It was difficult to distinguish the good guys from the bad guys. The terrorists also learned how to best attack a superior force, usually with improvised explosive devices and by using civilians to shield their attacks.

It’s difficult to find any bright spot in this war. The country is a long way from being a democracy as was envisioned by the Bush administration. Corruption and sectarian fighting continues. Various factions still fight over oil rights and the government stands on the brink of collapse.

Our troops are, however, out. And we learned that the U.S. experiment with an all-volunteer force worked well. Soldiers, sailors and Marines acquitted themselves with honor and bravery.

The question is, however, how much more can we expect of these men and women. Too many of them have served two, three and four tours in Iraq and now Afghanistan. Too many have the scars – mental and physical – to show for their dedication.

The talk from some politicians of taking military action in Syria is disturbing and foolish. We spent 10 years getting out of Iraq and are on the way to leaving Afghanistan. This is no time to ask our fighting men and women to enter the fray again.

It would be naive to believe that the U.S. will never be called upon again to protect its interests and its people with military force. But we can learn that the idea of a “preventive war” is as preposterous as it sounds.

Let’s be alert and strong. But let us also be smart and learn our lessons.

I believe in a true Theocracy administered by the only true God, but while I wait for it, the democracy we have in this country is great. It is great, in my opinion, because it has separation of church and state, which is something that does not exist in the Islamic religion. The clerics of Islam do allow their citizens to provide water for the seed of democracy, and it withers away. Lebanon and Iraq received it at first with joy, but democracy is now withering away in both countries.

Democracy: fragile seeds that fall on stony ground

Halfway through his eight-nation tour of the Arab world, President Bush delivered yesterday what his hosts had long expected: a call for democracy to flower in the arid political climate of the Middle East.

Three years ago, when he made the drive for democracy in the region the central pillar of US foreign policy for his second term in office, the impact caused political shockwaves among friends and foes in a part of the world where rulers and dictators have long resisted change.

Yesterday the Bush message was far less strident, in large part because the experiment is widely regarded to have failed and the Administration is seen as too weak to apply any meaningful pressure in its dying months in office.

Egypt, the largest and most influential Arab state, was supposed to have been the test bed for America’s experiment. The pressure on the regime of Hosni Mubarak forced the country to loosen restrictions on political opponents and hold multicandidate presidential elections. The Cairo spring was short-lived. Mr Mubarak won a fifth term, his chief rival for the presidency languishes in jail, the main Islamist opposition is banned and the authorities have once again stifled political debate.

Saudi Arabia, an absolute monarchy ruled by King Abdullah, never even pretended to buy into the American experiment. It has introduced modest democratic reforms, but change is so sluggish that there is no threat to the existing political establishment, a partnership between the House of Saud and the clergy. One place that Mr Bush wanted to visit was Lebanon. Unique among nations in the region, its street protests in 2005 led to the removal of Syrian troops and the election of a pro-Western government.

However, the dreams of the “Cedar Revolution”, as it was known, have all but evaporated. The country’s infrastructure was devastated during the 2006 war with Israel, which America and Britain supported. The Government has since been unable to function properly because of blocking tactics from the pro-Syrian opposition and assassinations of key figures, for which Syria is widely blamed.

Democracy has also caused as many problems as it was supposed to solve. The election victory of Hamas, which won Palestinian parliamentary polls in 2006, has divided Palestinians and complicated peace efforts.

Even Iraq, a country that has had more elections and referendums than most Western democracies, still has little to show for it. Until violence is halted and real reconciliation can begin between rival sects and ethnic groups, democracy will remain a slogan.

If there is any modest achievement in the region, it lies in the Gulf, where countries such as Kuwait and Bahrain have held multiparty elections and encouraged women to take part.

Op-ed: Instead of bringing real peace plan to Middle East, Obama chooses to do nothing but talk

Before he decided to go to politics, Barack Obama dreamed of being a writer. Everywhere he went, he would hold a notebook and a pen under his arm. Obama authored his first book, “Dreams from My Father,” on his own, without a ghost writer. He created a best-seller which touches people’s hearts.

Obama is first and foremost a man of words. With the hands of an artist, he combines them together. They allow him to express a dream, they give him the grandiose ability to charm and excite. Yet in policy there are moments in which words have no more power. And this is Obama’s great mistake: He brought a suitcase filled with words to his visit to the Middle East. The White House staff worked for hours on end to equip him with brilliant wordings. Later, he – with his own hands – embellished the speeches and wove the glitter into them.

There is only one thing the president did not bring along on his visit: A real peace plan, attached to a timetable. A plan comprised of all the things Obama has been saying for the past four years: Two states, with Jerusalem as their capital, land swaps, a secured border, security arrangements.

Obama chose to do nothing but talk. At the start of his first term in office, he promised the world: He appointed a special envoy to the Middle East, started a process and appeared as someone who was about to save both people from their leadership. The American president has the tools to design a reality: He doesn’t have to force peace on the two sides – he has to put a plan on the table, and from this point recruit the global public opinion in order to advance it. He has to present a plan also in order to make it clear which side is willing to go along with it and which is the refusing side.

Obama boarded Air Force One and made the long trip to Israel in order to listen, as if there is something left to say to him about the issue which he does not know.

When he started off, Obama said that one is not only allowed to dream – one must dream. During his visit, he will not be helping the sides to fulfill the dream he himself promised them. When the lights go off and the festival comes to an end, the president will go back to his home, leaving behind a Middle East with another missed opportunity. This time it will have his name all over it.

The U.S. Is Underengaged in the Middle East

Interview with Vali Nasr

Circumstances have changed. In 2009, President Obama thought that the most important issue in the region was the Arab-Israeli issue. It now has to compete with some other very important crises there.

American interests abroad do not take a holiday because you are having an economic problem. We end up with this false assumption that we can selectively pay attention to the Middle East when it suits us, or when our pockets are full of money. We know from experience that we do have vital interests there.

This is not just about energy. Can the United States afford a broken Egypt and a shattered Syria? Can Asia itself be successful if the Middle East begins to melt down? What will happen to Europe if North Africa ends up being a series of failed states with al-Qaeda across the border? We have gone from a period of being overengaged in the Middle East to being now underengaged. Vali Nasr is dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in Washington. Isaiah 29:6 – Thou shalt be visited of the Lord of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.

Revelation 6:12-15 – And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was A GREAT earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; [13] And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. [14] And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; AND EVERY MOUNTAIN AND ISLAND WERE MOVED OUT OF THEIR PLACES. [15] And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

All mountains and islands ride as passengers attached to the tectonic planets, and by the end of the tribulation period, they will have been moved away from their latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates by a few microseconds, such that the islands have fled to new coordinates, and the mountains will not be found at their old coordinates. The plates begin to move in Revelation 6:12 with the first great earthquake, and stop moving noticeably in Revelation 16:20 following the last fantastic earthquake.

Revelation 16:18-21 – And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a GREAT earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and SO great. [19] And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. [20] AND EVERY ISLAND FLED AWAY, and THE MOUNTAINS WERE NOT FOUND.

The tension and pressure buildups along the plate boundaries produce the world’s earthquakes. They have been built up by the slow plate movements over a long period of time. The vast majority of this tension and pressure buildup will be released between the opening of the sixth seal and the pouring out of the last vial. This will mean a millennial reign of Christ that only shows minor earthquakes from time to time.

The elasticity of the outer crust of the earth, when it was first created, was much greater than it is now, and was more than able to withstand the constant gravitational pull of the other heavenly bodies, which have caused it to daily pull outward, and then to relax inward, as it rotated around the sun, without causing the crust to phase into a worldwide readjustment of its tectonic plates. I believe what begins in Revelation 6:14 and ends in Revelation 16:20 portrays such a readjustment, and will include all the phenomena of Isaiah 29:6.

Revelation 6:14 – And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

Revelation 16:20 – And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

Figure 3 shows the world’s tectonic plates. Figures 4 to 8 also apply to this Blog.

Revelation 8:7 – The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

Revelation 8:7 does not mix frozen hailstones with fire. It mixes large volcanic bombs (hail) and fiery blood-red lava. I believe what John witnessed was a worldwide pattern of volcanic eruptions around the edges of the tectonic plates. This verse is a perfect description of a chain of volcanic eruptions. As the volcanic bombs (hail) are thrown great distances from the caldera vents, fires are started, and as the fiery lava moves across the surface of the earth it burns up everything in its path. I challenge you to view films of an actual eruption and then not believe this is what John saw in his vision from God. (See Archives – Birth Pang 3)

Revelation 8:8,9 – And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; [9] And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

A fuller, more descriptive, rendering of part of this verse from “The Bible in Basic English,” Dutton, 1950, Cambridge Press, is as follows: “It was as if a great mountain burning with fire had been cast into the sea.” Again, I believe the great fiery mountain that suddenly appeared in the sea would naturally have been assumed to come from above to the one abruptly seeing it there (See Archives – Birth Pang 4). This was the first of thousands that will be rapidly appearing along the plate borders of the tectonic plates, building up from the ocean sea floors to break the sea surface. The resultant action of rapid heating of the ocean above these volcanic vents will discolor one-third of the sea water into a murky rusty-red maze of aquatic death by the smothering effect of the basaltic hematite oxidation, and generate an ocean wide population explosion of dinoflagellate, which will produce the deadly red tide. The earthquakes and volcanic eruptions on the ocean and sea floors will produce the collapse and/or rise of segments of the ocean sea floor, and some massive sliding of parts of the coastal land mass into the oceans. And these actions will produce hundreds of Tsunami waves along those coastal areas of the world that have an abruptly rising coastline. (See Archives – Birth Pang 5) Furthermore, I assure you when the massive shifting of the tectonic plates begins, then this seismic wave action would destroy any ships in port. At any given time about two-thirds of the world’s shipping is under way on the open sea, and one-third is in port. The one third in port will be utterly destroyed by gigantic Tsunami waves like the coastal residents of the world have never seen.

Luke 21:25 – And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
