OPPOSITION SOURCES: ASSAD IN LATAKIA

Assad is directing the response to the assassination of three of his top lieutenants from the coastal city of Latakia, opposition sources and a Western diplomat said on Thursday.

Assad, who has not made a public appearance since Wednesday’s bombing, was commanding the government operation, they said. It was not clear whether Assad travelled to the Mediterranean sea resort before or after the attack.

“Our information is that he is at his palace in Latakia and that he may have been there for days,” said a senior opposition figure, who declined to be named.

The palace, which Assad has used before to conduct official business, is located in hills near the city, Syria’s main port.

The diplomat, who is following events in Syria, said: “Everyone is looking now at how well Assad can maintain the command structure. The killings yesterday were a huge blow, but not fatal.”

Latakia province is home to several towns inhabited by members of Assad’s minority Alawite sect.

Wolf’s Lair is the standard English name for Wolfsschanze, Adolf Hitler‘s first World War II Eastern Front military headquarters, one of several Führerhauptquartier (Führer Headquarters) or FHQs located in various parts of Europe. The complex, which was built for Operation Barbarossa, the 1941 German invasion of the Soviet Union, was located in the Masurian woods, about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from the small East Prussian town of Rastenburg, now Kętrzyn in Poland.

The original bunker system was constructed by Organisation Todt, but the later planned enlargement was never finished; the expansion work was stopped only a few days before the Russian advance to Angerburg (now Węgorzewo), only 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) away.

Hitler first arrived at the Wolf’s Lair late on the night of 23 June 1941, and departed for the last time on 20 November 1944. Overall, he spent over 800 days there during that 3½-year period.

The complex was blown up and abandoned on 25 January 1945, but many of the bunkers were so thick that their damaged walls and ceilings remain. The remains are located in Poland at the hamlet of Gierłoż (German: Forst Görlitz) near Kętrzyn.

Assad will fight from new mountain fortress if civil war engulfs Syria

As Arab League monitors fail in their mission to curb brutal regime violence in Syria and the ten-month popular defiance continues to rage, President Bashar Assad is digging in for a full-scale civil war.
DEBKAfile reports exclusively that a fortress is under construction for the Syrian ruler, family, his loyal generals and ruling elite in the northwestern Alawite (Al-Ansariyyah) Mountains – should Damascus become too hot for them.

From there, the Assads will continue to fight for their survival.

These mountains have the only dense forests in the vicinity of Syria’s Mediterranean coast.

The Al-Ansariyyah range averages 32 kilometers (20 miles) in breadth and a peak elevation of just over 1,200 meters. The tallest mountain, Nabi Yunis east of Latakia, is 1,562 meters (5,125 feet) high. The range slopes down from its northern tip to an average altitude of 900 meters (3,000 feet) and 600 meters in the south.

Our military and intelligence sources report Syrian engineering corps crews working at speed to build a fortified encampment, partly inside caves and tunnels, on the wooded slopes. Its perimeter is enclosed with anti-tank defenses armed with anti-air batteries.

When finished, the camp will be one of the most heavily fortified strongholds in the Middle East.

In support of the Syrian dictator, large groups of Alawite families began moving in the last week of November from the mixed towns of Latakia, Hama and Homs to new homes in the encampment – apparently on a signal from Assad’s intelligence and security services.

Fortified facilities stocked with supplies are being provided for Alawite families unable to leave their towns and villages.

This mass relocation encompasses around a million Alawites, or a third of the 3.5 million members of this deviant offspring of this ruling Shiite Muslim faith, which numbers just over one-tenth of Syria’s total population.

By reestablishing his headquarters in a mountain fortress, Bashar Assad hopes to achieve two goals:

1. To keep his Alawite following out of harm’s way in a full-scale civil war. They face bitter Sunni revenge for the brutal persecution its adherents have suffered from Assad father and son for 37 years.

2. Cluster ing Alawite familiesin protected cantons will guarantee their loyalty to Bashar Assad and his clan.

Our Middle East sources report that not all Alawite clan leaders are willing to following the ruler into his mountain bastion.

Some communities have gone over to the other side, for the first time in the ten-month popular uprising against his regime

In the flashpoint Homs and Hama regions, a dozen Alawite village chiefs have struck deals with local rebel militia chiefs including the Free Syrian Army for guaranteed immunity from attack provided their sons refuse to join Assad’s state-backed private paramilitary Shabiha.

The inability of Assad and his henchmen to prevent these desertions from his own clan betokens the president’s declining authority beneath the bloody surface of the contest in the strife-torn country.

In 2007, after considering numerous factors in the Middle East, the most important of them being times of troop removal from Iraq and Afghanistan, I was of the opinion that the prophesied final war in the Middle East was most likely to occur at some point in time between 2013 and 2015. In 2009 it became obvious that President Obama was not going to remove them as fast as I thought he would, so I changed my estimated time of war likely to begin by a 1 year shift, changing it between 2014 and 2016. It appears to me now that is still a reasonable estimate.

I have saying since 2007 that I believed a Middle East War between Islam and Israel was likely to break out at some point in time between 2013 and 2015. There were a lot of different military tactical and political factors I considered when I made that likely time of war prediction, chief among them was when our troops would be pulled out of the Middle East. I still believe this to be the major determining factor. However, the time of the initial appearance of a strong leader in Syria who impresses both friends and foes of Israel, and how long it takes him to unite the Daniel 2 clay and iron toes, will have a huge effect on when he attacks Israel. As the time of the prophesied attack, which I believe is one of the events that lets us know “that it is near, even at our doors,” but to know the exact day, hour, season, or year of the attack is far beyond my capabilities and, as I have stated repeatedly, the time span between 2013 and 2015 is simply a guesstimate on my part based on my NSA and Biblical Experiences in the Middle East.

Intense fighting between the opposition and government forces is raging in a half-dozen areas of the Syrian capital Damascus, the day after a bomb struck at the heart of Syria’s senior command, killing at least three of President Bashar al-Assad’s top brass.

Columns of black smoke rose over Damascus on Thursday as troops shelled Qaboon and Barzeh, while fighting raged in al-Midan and Zahira and loud explosions were heard in Mashrou-Dumar, said the Syrian Local Coordination Committees.

Violence also erupted in Ikhlas neighbourhood near the government headquarters after rebels attacked forces loyal to Assad, who have deployed armoured vehicles, attack helicopters and increased roadblocks across the city.

Rebels fired rocket-propelled grenades at a police station in the Jdeidet Artouz area, killing at least five officers, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, as the chief UN observer warned that Syria was not “on the track for peace”.

Maj Gen Robert Mood, the Norwegian head of nearly 300 observers sent to the country to monitor a cease-fire that never took effect, said the mission was not working.

Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr, reporting from Beirut, said many people believed the latest developments had led the Syrian conflict to a turning point.

“The Damascus fighting is now in its fifth day, getting close to power base of the Syrian president,” our correspondent said. “The prestige of the regime has been shattered. Losing control of Damascus [means] the regime is slowly losing its grip over the country.”

Wednesday’s attack, the first to target Assad’s inner circle since a 16-month uprising erupted, came ahead of a Western showdown on Thursday with Russia and China over a draft UN resolution calling for sanctions.

The explosion was blamed on a bodyguard attending a meeting of security chiefs at their headquarters, prompting the White House to say Assad was “losing control” of Syria.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon and international envoy Kofi Annan called on the Security Council to take strong action, ahead of the vote on the western-backed resolution which Russia and China are expected to veto.

Ban said there was an “extreme urgency” for action to make government and opposition forces halt the violence, which activists say has killed more than 17,000 people since March last year.

The current 90-day UN mission in Syria ends on Friday, and if no resolution is passed by then, it would have to shut down this weekend, diplomats say.

More than 200 people, mostly civilians, were killed on Wednesday, including 38 in Damascus, where rebels are pressing an all-out offensive, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Unprecedented bombing

Wednesday’s bombing killed Defence Minister General Daoud Rajha, Assad’s brother-in-law Assef Shawkat and General Hassan Turkmani, head of the regime’s crisis cell on the uprising, state media said.

Among those wounded were Interior Minister Mohammed al-Shaar and General Hisham Ikhtiyar, head of National Security.

Conflicting accounts have emerged of who carried out the attack on Wednesday and how it was perpetrated.

Syrian state media did not air any images of the blast, as in previous explosions that hit Damascus in the last two months.

Assad, reported by Reuters to be in the coastal city of Latakia, made no statement on the attack, but within hours named Major General Fahad Jassim Feraj as defence minister, the state news agency SANA reported.

The attack was claimed by the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA), although another group, the Brigade of Islam, also said it was responsible.

The rebels said the attack, part of Operation Damascus Volcano launched on Monday, “is the first in a series … aimed at bringing down Assad and the pillars and symbols of the regime, whether civilian or military”.

State media initially said it was a “suicide bombing” before apparently retracting and calling it a “terrorist attack”.

Assad ‘losing control’

The blast came a day after the FSA – comprising army defectors and armed civilians – declared its battle to “liberate” Damascus had begun and warned the regime to “expect surprises”.

White House National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said Assad was “losing control,” pointing to “increasing” defections and a “strengthened and more united” opposition.

Pentagon chief Leon Panetta said the international community must “bring maximum pressure on Assad to do what’s right, to step down and to allow for that peaceful transition”.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the bombing “underlines the urgent need for concerted action by the UN Security Council and the international community to enforce Kofi Annan’s peace plan,” referring to the UN-Arab League envoy.

Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed on Wednesday in a phone call with US President Barack Obama following the attack to work with the US to find a solution to the crisis in Syria, the White House said.

But the Kremlin stressed that “differences” remain ahead of the UN Security Council vote at 10am EDT (1400GMT) in which Russia is expected to veto a Western-drafted resolution calling for sanctions against Assad.

Russia earlier demanded the arrest and strict punishment of those behind what it called an “act of terror.”

“We see the events as another attempt to further destabilise the situation in Syria,” the foreign ministry said, calling on both sides to reassess the situation and seek peace.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II warned meanwhile that his northern neighbour was on the brink of all-out civil war and that in a worst-case scenario, Syria’s chemical weapons could fall into the “unfriendly” hands of al-Qaeda.

He told CNN the attack that killed core members of the Syrian regime was a “tremendous blow” to Assad but not yet the death knell for a regime that remains determined to cling to power.

So how do individual men and women prepare right now for the worldwide geological horrors of the Lord’s coming visit?

They call upon the Lord Jesus Christ to save them from God’s condemnation for sins. They hear his word by reading or hearing it, and react to his Spirit by calling on the one whom the Father sent to save them from their inherited condition at birth.

John 5:24,40 – Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. [40] And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

Acts 4:12 – Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Acts 20:20,21 – And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, [21] Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Repentance is turning to God believing his word, and putting your faith in Jesus Christ to save from what you are – A sinner who must have a savior to deliver you from hell. I advise you not to wait until the tectonic chaos begins.

Prepare for Syria chaos

Op-ed; Day after Assad may see civil war between sects, as Alawites fight for their lives

The Assad regime is like a dilapidated shack being attacked by swarms of termites. The wood is already hollow and eaten up, yet still standing. When will it collapse and disintegrate? Nobody dares to guess. Even the Americans cautiously speak of a graduate, lengthy process. This includes the secretary of state, who is in Israel these days.

The intelligence discourse no longer deals with the question of whether Assad will go, but rather, with what will happen the day after. The assessment is that the war in Syria won’t end even after Assad’s departure. The Alawites won’t surrender. They will continue to fight for their lives.

Meanwhile, as time passes, the struggle between Syria’s Alawites and Sunnis becomes clearer. The great defection from the army is mostly by Sunni officers and soldiers. The rhetoric of the defecting officers is becoming increasingly Islamist, and this is no coincidence.

The officers, who are not religious, are talking about eliminating the Alawite hegemony. This shows us that even after Assad, the two sects will continue to spill each other’s blood.

Another testament to this can be seen now already if we map the main combat theaters. It is no coincidence that Homs and its environs have become a brutal focal point of fighting. Alawites and Sunnis live right next to each other in the area. Homs is the gateway to Syria’s Alawite region – the coastal area where the Alawites are fighting without compromise, in order to safeguard their homes.

The Alawites have reached the point of forming independent militias that operate in the Alawite area in order to suppress any hint of rebellion. They don’t trust the army to stand by them forever. For them, this is a war of survival.

Russia prepares for evacuation

Assad can take comfort in the fact that the other minorities – the Druze, the Kurds, the Christians – have not yet joined the ranks of the rebels. The Druze, who thus far lost some 150 soldiers in fighting against the rebels, fear the radical Sunnis. Indeed, young and educated Druze support the uprising, yet the great mass fears the message brought by the Salafites among the rebels who are supported by radical Islamic elements.

The Syrian Kurds as well, and most certainly the Christians, still view Assad’s regime as a protector.

The erosion in the regime’s pillars is already shifting from the periphery to the large cities like Aleppo and Damascus. Indeed, once in a while we see the outbreak of fighting in the more central neighborhoods, yet most combat is still confined to the poor, more remote suburbs. The Sunni bourgeoisies in Aleppo are locked up at home or head overseas, but they don’t come out against the regime.

In Damascus we see a new phenomenon of fighting in middle class neighborhoods, which are closer to the center. In recent days, there has been fierce fighting in a more remote and poorer neighborhood, Tadmun, many of whose residents are Golan Heights refugees. These are people treated by the regime as second class citizens for many years, and now they are rising up against it.

The Russians are preparing for evacuating their people from Syria in the coming weeks. They may know something that President Assad is still unaware of. He still enjoys enough military power and enough militia forces in order to keep spilling blood.

However, this is a temporary situation. The forecast for the day after Assad refers to the possibility of chaos and a civil war among sects. The Alawites are already starting to talk about the option of withdrawing into their own autonomous area.

Rebels launch ‘Damascus volcano’ offensive

Regime deploys helicopters to fire into Qaboon district of the capital

Damascus Syria’s rebels announced the launch of a “Damascus volcano’ offensive against regime forces, which according to activists deployed helicopters on Tuesday in a Damascus neighbourhood rocked by intense fighting.

The Free Syrian Army’s central-Homs Joint Command said its operation, dubbed “the Damascus volcano and earthquakes of Syria,” was launched “in response to massacres and barbaric crimes” committed by the Assad regime.

The FSA, the statement said, started to conduct “attacks on all security stations and branches in the cities and the countryside, to enter into fierce clashes [with their forces] and to call on them to surrender.”

The FSA called for all international roads to be cut off, “from (northern) Aleppo to (southern) Daraa and from (eastern) Deir Ezzor to (coastal) Latakia, to cut off and seize the supply lines

The rebel Free Syrian Army said the battle to “liberate” Damascus has begun, as fighting raged in the capital on Tuesday and the army countered it has the situation under control.

The influential Muslim Brotherhood, meanwhile, urged people in Damascus to rise up and back the rebels locked in a “decisive battle” against forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.

The appeal came after the Free Syrian Army announced it had launched a large-scale operation dubbed “the Damascus volcano and earthquakes of Syria.”

Colonel Kassem Saadeddine, the Homs-based spokesman for the FSA’s Joint Command, said “victory is nigh,” and that the fighting would go on until the whole of the capital has been conquered.

“We have transferred the battle from Damascus province to the capital,” said Saadeddine. “We have a clear plan to control the whole of Damascus. We only have light weapons, but it’s enough.”

“Expect surprises,” he added, without elaborating.

The FSA, composed of army defectors and civilians who have joined the insurgency, relies on light weapons, in stark contrast to the regular army’s heavy firepower.

Fighting has raged in Damascus since Sunday, with activists describing the escalation as a “turning point” in the 16-month uprising, with fierce clashes in several neighbourhoods.

Helicopters were deployed in Damascus for the first time, shooting heavily into neighbourhoods that have become centres of resistance.

For his part, a military officer in Damascus said the army “had the situation under control and was chasing the terrorists seeking refuge in apartments and mosques.”

The army had entered Al-Midan district and surrounded Zein al-Abideen mosque, while troops gave residents an ultimatum to leave ahead of an imminent attack, the officer said on condition of anonymity.

The official said that soldiers had entered the southern district of Tadamon at 4:00 am (0100 GMT) on Tuesday, where “there are still pockets of resistance.”

The military source said “battles raged” in the eastern district of Qaboon, “where the majority of rebels were,” adding that “33 terrorists were killed, 15 were wounded and 145 were arrested,” in a reference to the rebels.

As the fighting raged, the Muslim Brotherhood said the people of Damascus must seize “this historic moment” by providing support for rebels in the Syrian capital.

“Prepare to become soldiers in the decisive battle. You will secure victory with your own two hands,” the Islamist group said in a statement.

The battle must be “the gate to victory” in the uprising against Assad’s autocratic regime.

“Our battle is now in Damascus… and this requires that we mobilise all the forces and all our efforts to secure victory,” said the Brotherhood, a key component of the opposition Syrian National Council.

The Israeli army’s intelligence chief said Syrian troops have moved from the Golan Heights towards conflict zones including Damascus.

“Assad has removed many of his forces that were in the Golan Heights to the areas of conflict,” Major General Aviv Kochavi told MPs.

He also said that “radical Islam” was gaining ground and that Syria was undergoing a process of “Iraqisation,” with militant and tribal factions controlling different areas.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, gunfire was heard in Qaboon on Monday night.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Observatory reported the army had deployed reinforcements in Al-Midan as battles raged between rebels and troops.

It also reported 35 people were killed across Syria on Tuesday, including 16 civilians, 14 regime troops and five rebels. In Damascus, seven civilians and one rebel were killed.

The Observatory’s toll reports cannot be independently verified. The watchdog has estimated more than 17,000 people have been killed in violence since the revolt broke out in March 2011.
