Update of First Book “Tectonic Chaos” (1976-1977)

Tectonic Chaos – Chapter 3 – The Astronomical Trigger of Terror

I finished writing “Tectonic Chaos” in 1977, during my University post graduate work at ATU, some 27 years ago. Tectonic Chaos was actually written as a retort to a very popular book published some three years before I finished it. The book, “The Jupiter Effect,” by astronomers John Gribbin and Stephen Plagemann, was published in 1974. It was an overnight best seller and a financial success, but I violently disagreed with the premises it advanced concerning a great world disaster they claimed would occur in 1982. They proposed that, when the alignment of the sun, moon, and planets on one side of the earth occurred, then the tidal forces would accompany sunspots, which would create solar flares. The solar flares would create streams of solar particles entering the earth’s atmosphere that would change the world’s weather patterns, and the overall effect would slow the rate of the earth’s rotation, which would trigger worldwide earthquakes.

I absolutely did not believe this would happen in 1982, and primarily for that reason wrote “Tectonic Chaos.” I believed the effects would weaken the tectonic plate complex, but that its effects would not be felt WHEN the alignment occurred.

But I did believe the initial planet alignment effect, which was to be completely out of phase by 1986, would ‘EVENTUALLY’ be one of the parameters that would help to produce a fulfillment of the phenomena mentioned in Isaiah 29:6. (See Archives – Figure 3 in Birth Pang Figures)

Isaiah 29:6 – Thou shalt be visited of the Lord of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.

In 1977 I closed Chapter 2 of “Tectonic Chaos” with these two quoted sentences: “I am persuaded that in the mid-1980’s God will use his Universal Gravitation Law to ‘EVENTUALLY’ bring about a worldwide shift of the tectonic plates.

This great shifting will be accompanied by chains of earthquakes and volcanic activity like the world of man has never known.” I do confess I expected the sudden shifting to suddenly begin at a point in time just before the dawn of 2000, and it has taken longer than I expected. But I have always believed the sudden, abrupt shifting would occur in conjunction with the fall of Jerusalem to the antichrist. However, if I am still alive when Jerusalem falls, and the plates have not shifted, I will still believe the ‘EVENTUALLY’ shall be in the immediate future, and that the first earthquake in Revelation will mark the beginning of the great shifting of the world’s tectonic plates.

Revelation 6:12-15 – And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was A GREAT earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; [13] And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. [14] And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; AND EVERY MOUNTAIN AND ISLAND WERE MOVED OUT OF THEIR PLACES.

[15] And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

All mountains and islands ride as passengers attached to the tectonic planets, and by the end of the tribulation period, they will have been moved away from their latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates by a few microseconds, such that the islands have fled to new coordinates, and the mountains will not be found at their old coordinates. The plates begin to move in Revelation 6:12 with the first great earthquake, and stop moving noticeably in Revelation 16:20 following the last fantastic earthquake. (See Archives – Birth Pang 3)

Revelation 16:18-21 – And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a GREAT earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and SO great. [19] And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. [20] AND EVERY ISLAND FLED AWAY, and THE MOUNTAINS WERE NOT FOUND.

The tension and pressure buildups along the plate boundaries produce the world’s earthquakes. They have been built up by the slow plate movements over a long period of time. The vast majority of this tension and pressure buildup will be released between the opening of

the sixth seal and the pouring out of the last vial. This will mean a millennial reign of Christ that only shows minor earthquakes from time to time.

The elasticity of the outer crust of the earth, when it was first created, was much greater than it is now, and was more than able to withstand the constant gravitational pull of the other heavenly bodies, which have caused it to daily pull outward, and then to relax inward, as it rotated around the sun, without causing the crust to phase into a worldwide readjustment of its tectonic plates. I believe what begins in Revelation 6:14 and ends in Revelation 16:20 portrays such a readjustment, and will include all the phenomena of Isaiah 29:6.

Revelation 6:14 – And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

Revelation 16:20 – And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

Tectonic Chaos – Chapter 2 – Tectonic Terror

Earthquakes associated with splitting of the Mount of Olives will be accompanied by a long chain of worldwide earthquakes. These earthquakes will occur along fault lines that stretch across the surface of the earth, and will be far greater than in magnitude and intensity than any which have occurred since God placed Adam on the earth.

The Jordan Rift Valley is merely a small part of the thousands of fault lines that are interconnected across the earth, but the first, and the last, of the many earthquakes occurring during the tribulation period, will occur along it, one with 1260 days left till Armageddon, and the last one will end the battle of Armageddon.

As geologists have run “to and fro” across the earth our knowledge has been greatly increased as to the method that God has, and does, use in reshaping the earth’ s cru

st and interior. We now know that the outer crust of the earth’s surface actually floats on an underlying layer of molten rock known as magma. When magma bursts forth onto the earth’s surface it is called lava. These plates of floating crust (called tectonic plates) are gigantic in size. The largest, the Pacific Plate, consists of virtually the entire Pacific Ocean seafloor. The plates come together along their edges, and these zones of contact are called faults. There are several types of faults that exist along tectonic plate borders, but it is not the purpose of this discourse to teach structural geology, so I will merely identify all these faults as cracks or flaws in the earth’s surface, which reach far down into a worldwide sea of magma beneath the tectonic plate crust (See Figure 3 under Birth Pangs). The dashed lines on Figure 3 are the major faults or “cracks” that exist between the plates. The arrows indicate the general movement of the plates as they drift ever so slowly over the underlying sea of magma in response to its convective currents. As you can see in Figure 3, the Jordan Valley rift fault is merely a very small part of the endless linkage of fault lines that weave across the surface of the globe.

Another bit of the “to and fro” knowledge that has increased for man “in the end times” is discovery of the fact that some 95 percent or the world’s earthquakes, and about 90 percent of all volcanic eruptions occur along the fault lines shown on Figure 3. Man has learned that the earthquakes occurring along these fault lines are primarily the result of sudden readjustment movements between the plate boundaries, such as the well publicized San Andreas Fault in California.

There are numerous phenomena that affect the conduct of these tectonic plates. In the last 200 years man has gained sufficient knowledge to know that God has a law of universal gravitation. Sir Isaac Newton wrote the law as follows: “Every body in the universe attracts every other body in the universe with a force that varies directly as the product of their masses and inversely as the square of the distances between the two masses.” It was this principle that allowed man to eventually understand the ocean tides of the earth. There are many different types of tides, but man has learned that the highest tides occur when the sun, moon, and earth are in a perfect straight line alignment. This kind of alignment causes the oceans to be pulled outward from the earth by gravitational force to a maximum convex bulge. Not only does this gravitational pull affect the water surface of the earth – it also pulls the earth’s crust outward toward the sun and moon, but the crust of the earth has been able to accept this amount of gravitational pull without disastrous effects up to the present time. However, I am persuaded that in the middle of the 1980’s God will use his universal gravitational law to EVENTUALLY bring about a worldwide shift of the tectonic plates, and that, WHEN this shifting DOES occur, it will be accompanied by chains of earthquake and volcanic activity like the world of man has never known.

I was still waiting in 2004 for the “EVENTUALLY” of the preceding paragraph, and when it DOES finally OCCUR, it will produce chains of earthquake and volcanic activity as the scriptures indicate.

I honestly expected the activity to begin before the dawn of 2000, but I was wrong in my estimation. I have always believed it would occur in conjunction with the fall of Jerusalem to the antichrist, which I guesstimate likely

to occur prior to 2015. However, if I am still alive when a new year dawns in 2015, I will still believe that the “EVENTUALLY” will still be in the immediate future. During the earth’s long history it’s crust has become increasingly brittle, and the day will come when all this pulling out and then pulling in by the gravitation galactic forces that have daily affected it, will bring it to the point that a great future earthquake will trigger a massive chain of earthquakes to release the pressure points and tension zones that have been built up along the plate boundaries. It will mark the time of visitation by God in judgment by a horrific release of tectonic chaos.

I doubt if the final war of this age between Abraham’s Islamic sons of Ishmael and Keturah, and the sons of Isaac through Jacob, will begin in 2011 or 2013.

The “Arab Spring” will eventually run its course, and out of it will eventually come an Islamic Antichrist and a joining of clay and iron, which will hold together for some three and one-half years.

The Nations which attack Israel now are on the land conquered by the Umayyad Islamic Caliphate from the Ancient Roman Empire.

The Umayyad Islamic Caliphate was larger in size than the 6 Biblical Empires of Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Macedonia, and Rome that preceded it.

10 Jihad Kings among the Islamic Kings of Revelation 19:19!

At the battle of Armageddon most of the kings of the earth will come to join the antichrist in a final attempt to eradicate the nation of Israel. Among them will be 10 nations representing the 10 Jihad toes of Daniel 2 that drove Israel into the Negev three and one-half years earlier.

Revelation 19:19 – And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.

Some three and one-half years before the final battle of Armageddon, which closes the tribulation period, ten kings from those nations out of the Umayyad Islamic Caliphate, which conquered the southern half of the ancient Roman Empire, will attack Israel from the north.

Daniel 2:42 – And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.

II Thessalonians 2:3 – Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

The last evil kingdom of antichrist on this earth was to initially be comprised of 10 nations with 10 kings led by the man of sin himself. It was to arise out of the ashes of the old Roman Empire. I have always believed it would rise out of the southern half of the Empire and be made up of 10 Islamic nations. I believe the elements for its formation are in place today, and I suspect that the most likely nations of which it will be comprised are Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. Some of these nations are strong like iron, and some are as soft and pliable as clay. All of these present day nations currently occupy the land conquered from the ancient Roman Empire by Islam.

I do not question that in the final battle of Armageddon the descendants of Ham, Shem, and Japheth will be combatants against the nation of Israel. But I have always contended, along with the Bible expositors of the 18th and 19th centuries, that the antichrist’s initial attack would be led by Arab descendants of Abraham. They are the mingled seed of his oldest son Ishmael with the seed of the six sons he sired by Keturah, as well as some of the other offspring of his own father Terah. The empire of the antichrist will be an Islamic empire that eventually takes into it other old world nations. And, in the final great battle of Armageddon, all those nations that made up the world as it was known in A.D. 95 will come against Israel, such that Japheth, Ham, and Shem’s descendants will also be involved.

Daniel 2:41-43 – And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. [42] And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. [43] And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.

The 10 toes will consist primarily of Terah’s descendants. Abraham came out of Terah. Out of Abraham came the leaders of the three great monotheistic faiths associated with Moses, Jesus, and Mohammad. And they have always been in conflict. (Archive Prophecy Update Number 78 Diagram)

The inspired word in Daniel 2:43, from which the word “mingled” comes, is ARAB, which means “to interlace or mix.” The “seed of men” refers to non-descendants of the man Abraham, from which both Jews and Arabs descended. “They” refers to the 10 toes of Daniel’s statue in Daniel 2:42, which have 10 kings over them. Isaac, the father of Israel, had seven half brothers – Ishmael from Hagar and the six sons of Keturah. It was from these seven half brothers that the Arab world has been primarily created. The descendants of Israel have been more likely to marry within the blood line of the man Israel than have the Arabs to marry within their separate bloodlines of Hagar and Keturah, and the Arabs have also intermingled with non-descendants of Abraham more than have the Jews.

Daniel 2:43 – And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.

Just as iron and clay do not hold together very long, the 10 Arab nations will only hold together long enough to fulfill God’s end time tribulation period prophecies.

The saved will be caught up on the sounding of the seventh trump to be judged in heaven, and the kingdom of God will all be united in heaven, waiting to return to earth with Christ at his Second Advent.

Revelation 11:15 – And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

Daniel 2:44 – And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and

it shall stand for ever.

The God of heaven will call all the saved of all the ages together in heaven during the “days of these kings,” and will initially “set up” his kingdom, from whence he will return to earth with it as its head, after the saved have been judged in heaven.

Christ’s coming kingdom will “break in pieces and consume all the kingdoms” of the present world, and his kingdom alone will rule.

Revelation 11:15-18 – And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. Christ, the stone, came from the mountain representing God, without any human instrumentation, but by God’s Spirit forming his body in a virgin’s womb. Christ will return to destroy those morally destroying the earth. All of the evil that came out of the Babylonian, Medo- Persian, Macedonian, and Roman Empires will be laid waste by his Second Advent.

Daniel 2:45 – Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
The Scriptures which follow describe the coming of the great Stone, the great Rock, coming with his kingdom.

Revelation 19:11-18 – And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness

Maj.-Gen. Eisenberg reveals that Hamas used new advanced rocket in most recent attacks against Israel.

Noting an increase in the chance for a multi-front war, OC Home Front Command Maj.-Gen. Eyal Eisenberg revealed on Monday that Palestinian terror groups used a new and advanced rocket in their attacks against Israel during the recent round of fighting in the Gaza Strip.

“After the ‘Arab Spring’, we assess that a winter of radical Islam will arrive and as a result the possibility for a multi-front war has increased including the potential use of weapons of mass destruction,” Eisenberg said

during a conference on the Home Front at

the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv.

Home Front Command, Israel Atomic Energy Commission to hold large exercise called “Fernando”; drill will simulate Hezbollah, Hamas attack.

The IDF Home Front Command and the Israel Atomic Energy Commission will hold a large exercise on Tuesday to simulate a missile attack against the Dimona nuclear reactor in the Negev.

Called “Fernando,” the drill is named for the nuclear meltdown in 1959 in the San Fernando Valley near Los Angeles.

It took workers a month to regain control of the reactor and more than 50 years for the United States to clean up the contaminated site.

The drill will simulate a number of scenarios including a possible missile attack by Hezbollah, Syria or Hamas against the reactor or a possible earthquake that could destabilize the reactor’s core and spark a nuclear meltdown.

Israel has closely studied the recent crisis in Japan following the earthquakes in Fukushima that led to a nuclear meltdown at a number of reactors, to draw lessons that can be applied in the event of a missile strike on the Dimona facilities.

The last “Fernando” exercise was held in 2004. On Monday, the IAEC released a statement ahead of the drill claiming that its facilities were secure and that high-safety measures were in place to prevent nuclear disasters.

“The chance that a problem will occur and radioactive material will escape at a level that will endanger the public is extremely small,” the commission said.

The Iranian Air Force embarked on a massive 10-day exercise on Tuesday, the Fars news agency reported.

According to the report, The Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) will hold extensive combat maneuvers in the country’s northwestern regions.

The exercise, which was first announced in August, is expected to peak on Saturday.

“The aerial exercise is held annually. It is fully domestic, and like in previous drills no other country will be participating in it,” Air Force Commander Brigadier-General Aziz Nasirzadeh told Press TV.

Earlier reports regarding the drill suggested that it would be a joint exercise for Iran and several other countries.

“The exercise will feature all of the Air Force and Army’s combat aircrafts,” Nasirzadeh added.

The maneuvers were announced in a joint press conference by Iranian Air Force Deputy Commanders Mohsen Darebaqi and Mohammad Alavi and General Hossein Chitforoush, the drill’s spokesman.

The exercise, dubbed “Fadaeeyan-e Harim-e Vellayat III” (“those sacrificing themselves for the homeland 3”) will see the use of jets, aviation equipment, ammunitions and aerial tactics, in four phases across 10 days.

Iran will deploy fighter jets, fighter bombers, cargo and transportation planes, including F-4, F-5, Sukhoi SU-24 fighter-bombers, Mig-29 and the logistic C-130 planes as part of the exercises.

In June, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards held extensive war games – “Great Prophet-6” – which included the testing of various ballistic missiles.

In the long geological history of the Middle East and Africa, two cracks developed between the two areas, and as each crack has widened by individually spreading, it has formed the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba. The two northern fingers of the two cracks were gradually filled with the waters of the Red Sea as they spread apart when the African and Asian continents began to slowly separate.

The Book “Tectonic Chaos” – Chapter 1 – The Great Split

I began work on this book immediately after graduating from the MBS in Little Rock, Arkansas, and completed it in 1977 while doing post graduate work at ATU in Russellville, having graduated from ATU in 1976.

I have received numerous requests to reprint it as I have been lecturing across the globe. Because there was considerable duplication between it and my second book, “Tribulation Triad,” I deliberately let it go out of print, feeling some might feel cheated because of the volume of duplication. However, since many of my brethren kept bugging me for a copy, and since I only have two, one soft back, and one hard back, I decided to reprint and update it on our web site and, Lord willing, I will eventually put up all 36 chapters as time permits.

Chapter 1 – The Great Split

Zechariah 14:4 – And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and

half of it toward the south.

For hundreds of years preachers have proclaimed from God’s word this event would occur during the tribulation period, and the proclamation, as is normally the c

ase, has been met will rolls of laughter from most of the scientific world. Oddly enough, these scientists have, and still are, fulfilling a prophecy made by God through the prophet Daniel.

Daniel 12:4 – But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

Daniel’s prophecies concerning pre-tribulation events have, and are, being fulfilled, and indeed, men and women have run “to and fro across” the earth�

��s surface, “to and fro” into the universe, and “to and fro” in places beneath the earth’s land and water surface. This has produced a fantastic knowledge explosion in our understanding of the form and contents of God’s creation. The continuing fulfillment of Daniel 12:4 has convinced me that we are living in the days of “the time of the end.” And I am equally convinced these “to and fro” geological discoveries have so increased man’s knowledge that we now understand the basic form in which God designed the outer and enter crust of earth. These discoveries are in perfect agreement with what God revealed to the prophet Zechariah more than 2400 years ago.

Man has, in the end times, discovered a long, deep fault or “crack” in the earth’s crust that extends northward from the Red Sea through the Gulf of Eilat (Aqabah) into Israel and Lebanon.

The Arabs identify it as the Gulf of Aqabah, and the Israelis call it the Gulf

of Eilat. The fault itself is known to both as the “great rift valley fault”. It is a double fault in the sense that the two parts of it are separated by the valley floor between the two fault block mountains on it two sides. The vast majority of earthquakes occur along both sides of the valley from Eilat to the Lebanese border. (See Figures 24 and 25 found under our Birth Pangs Menu as Birth Pang Figures). It is the ripping open of this rift valley that will produce the earthquake responsible for the splitting of the Mount of Olives, which will itself be divided into a mini-rift valley as it spreads apart. (See Figures 30 to 33 in Birth Pangs).

The faults or “two cracks” in the earth’s surface are the northern part of a deep rift, or graben valley, which extends the length of the Red Sea, then southwestward through southeastern Africa. (See Figures 29 and 30 in Birth Pangs). The double cracks extend downward into molten magma beneath the earth’s surface. (See Birth Pang Figures 26 to 28). Widespread scientific exploration during the seventies fully exposed the spreading of the earth’s surface occurring in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and in southeastern Africa. Soon this splitting will extend northward unto the Jordan Valley, and, according to Zechariah 14:4, its effect will be sudden and dramatic. The fantastic earthquake produced in this Jordan Valley Rift, some 30 miles east of Jerusalem, will be sudden and abrupt, as will be its effect on the Mount of Olives, which will be torn into two parts during that terrible time in the tribulation period. This “suddenness” is certa inly

in accord with the geologic structure of today. At the present the rift valley fault is spreading apart in the Red Sea at a rate of several centimeters each year, but the northern extension of the fault through Israel and Lebanon has been locked or “frozen” in place by tremendous tectonic forces. When the spreading of the Red Sea fault reaches a certain critical (known only by God) both sides of the Jordan Valley will rip apart with a tremendous earthquake.

This earthquake will cause the two faults, which now exist through the northern and southern flanks of the Mount of Olives, to move slightly, one north, and one south, and a new mini-graben valley will be formed between them as the middle of the mountain falls down

between them. (See Birth Pang Figures 30 to 33).

When the northern and southern parts spread apart one part will be carried north with the Arabian tectonic plate, and the other will be carried south with the African tectonic plate. (See Birth Pang Figures 33 and 34).

Zechariah 14:5 – And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.

Sights and Insights: A surprising look below the surface

Eilat reminds me that there often lies more beneath the surface if we will simply explore, Dr Wayne Stiles says.

When we think of the Red Sea in the Bible, we tend to picture Charlton Heston—or perhaps, I should say, Moses leading the Jews out of Egypt. The parting of the sea set the stage for one of history’s most incredible escapes (Exodus 14:29-31). This body of water parted like curtains in the opening act of Israel’s history.

But this part of the Red Sea represents only half of its northernmost edges. The sea has two fingers that point north, divided by the Sinai Peninsula. The more famous finger, the one that parted in the Biblical exodus, is the western one—today called the Gulf of Suez.

If the western finger of the Red Sea represented Israel’s beginning as a nation under God, the eastern finger (Gulf of Akaba), may embody Israel’s ongoing relationship with the Lord after she crossed the Red Sea by God’s Hand.

Moses and the children of Israel passed the western section of the Red Sea as they circumvented the land of Edom and headed north to the area east of the Jordan River (Numbers 33:35-36; Deuteronomy 2:8). The port cities of that time were Ezion Geber and Elath—from which we get the modern spelling, Eilat.

Eilat sits at the northern tip of the Gulf of Akaba, as did the ancient city. Often closely associated with Ezion Geber, the cities served as key ports for Israel’s trade with Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. King Solomon constructed a fleet of ships at Ezion Geber (1 Kings 9:26-28). King Jehoshaphat also assembled ships at Ezion Geber to sail to Ophir, but God scuttled them because of an evil alliance Jehoshaphat had made (1 Kings 22:48; 2 Chronicles 20:35-37). Although King Uzziah recaptured Eilat during his reign, the Arameans would later conquer it and remove Judah from controlling the port (2 Kings 14:22; 2 Chronicles 26:1; 2 Kings 16:6).

Today, Eilat still plays a crucial role as a port city for Israel, a fact easily seen by the many tankers and cargo ships that frequent the gulf.

Israel’s imports and exports to and from Asia and East Africa have their touch point in Eilat.
But Eilat is more than a modern port. Since 1949, Eilat has been transformed into a beautiful resort city, and it remains the only Israeli town on the Red Sea. With beautiful beaches, marine life, snorkeling and scuba diving, bird watching and luxurious hotels the city really does have it all. It even has its own airport.

The place literally was built for tourists.

The sea looks crystal clear and shallow enough to reward any visitor wearing a mask and snorkel with a marvelous peek at one of the richest ecosystems on earth. Scuba divers can swim with dolphins at the Dolphin Reef. Those preferring to stay dry can still behold the wonders of the sea in a glass-bottomed boat.

A visit to the Underwater Observatory, south of Coral Beach, allows anyone to stare up close and wide-eyed at a part of creation rarely seen by landlubbers. Sharks, sea turtles, sponges, invertebrates, red tropical groupers, and coral reefs, are easily viewed behind glass walls thirty feet below the surface. A nearby oceanographic museum educates visitors on the marine life they’ll see. Over 500 species of fish is a lot to take in!

Those who come to Eilat might expect a completely secular experience. After all, except for the few biblical references to Eilat as a port, the place seems utterly devoid of anything spiritual. But it’s not that way for me.

The times I have been to Eilat cause me to marvel at the contrasts I see there. The monochrome, barren, and blistering hills that surround Eilat contrast wildly with the colorful and vibrant creation that explodes beneath its waters. That vivid difference reminds me of the spiritual life that thrives in the lives of many people who otherwise appear unadorned or even barren.

Eilat reminds me that there often lies more beneath the surface if we will simply explore.

What to do there:

Visit the Underwater Observatory, go scuba diving or snorkeling, do some bird watching, or simply sit on the beach and relax.

How to get there:

From Jerusalem, head west on Route 1 toward the Jericho area and turn south at the BeitHaArava Junction on Route 90.

Head south about 3.5 hours! Or just take a flight to Eilat.

Barack Obama is solidifying his status as the worst president in American history. The leader who promised us a bright future of peace and fraternity is leading the American empire – and the rest of the world with it – into a dark abyss. Ever since he settled into the Oval Office, Obama has been hopping from one disaster to the next, making every possible mistake, boosting enemies and disregarding allies while ruining everything he touches in the process.

To our regret, the heaviest price – for the time being at least – is being paid by residents of the Middle East.

When the masses hit Iran’s street and threatened to topple the Ayatollah regime, Obama was silent. Why should he support a struggle waged by freedom-hungry citizens against a radical Islamic dictatorship and chronic human rights violator

? And so, a rare opportunity to change the face of a state that today constitutes the gravest threat to world and regional peace slipped away.

Instead of supporting the brave Iranian protestors, Obama chose to nurture his relationship with a new buddy, Bashar Assad, while portraying him as a US ally.

When the same Assad started to heartily butcher his own people, while ignoring his “American friends,” Obama again chose silence, until finally breaking it with meaningless, vain declarations. For the time being Obama keeps muttering, Assad keeps murdering, and the world keeps watching and doing nothing.

So when did Obama act? Mubarak! The Egyptian ruler, possibly the wisest, most moderate Mideastern leader safeguarded the peace treaty with Israel, hunted down Islamic radicals, counter-balanced the Shiite Iran, steadfastly maintained his ties with the US and turned our crazed region into a slightly saner place.

He was no angle, certainly not towards his own people, but was or is there a better realistic option?

Yet there of all places, Obama the brilliant diplomat opted to intervene aggressively, openly humiliated Mubarak and ultimately presented him with an explicit threat while the latter was struggling to maintain his rule. When the president’s “security experts” declared that the Muslim Brotherhood is a “moderate movement” and admitted they need more time to ascertain its attitude to Israel, we knew we were in for trouble.

Within a few months, Egypt has turned into a state controlled by a military junta, radical Islam reared its head and the Sinai Peninsula turned into a no-man’s land contending for the title of “most dangerous region in the world.” Last week, the “border of peace” was rattled by the largest terror offensive in its history, not only killing eight Israelis but also producing a deep crisis vis-à-vis Egypt. Thank you for that one, too, Obama.

The Libya fiasco

A sure sign that Obama has become irrelevant and is no longer taken seriously by anyone is the tendency of other world leaders to listen to him – and then do the exact opposite. Despite his pleas, the rulers of Riyadh and Manama chose to ignore his demands for restraint and brutally repressed the protests against them. Apparently this spared us the dubious pleasure of watching the establishment of yet another Islamic Shiite state, this time in Bahrain.

Obama decided to intervene in Libya as well, likely after his advisors enlightened him on the importance of the vast desert nation’s oil reserves.

However, instead of acting decisively and exhibiting America’s power, Obama again chose to mutter and fidget; when a military operation against Gaddafi was finally approved, the hedid everything in his power to ensure the US does not take a lead role in the effort.

And so, the once-intimidating NATO alliance found itself entangled above Libya’s deserts for long months in a “battle of giants” against a state whose army is sometimes reminiscent of a Jenin street gang from a decade ago.

Indeed, Obama managed to erode the strategic-deterrent NATO asset as well. Now, with Gaddafi’s rule finally drawing to an end, the president kindly took time off from his vacation to festively declare that the future is in the Libyan people’s hands – while local tribes are preparing for the imminent bloodshed and al-Qaeda is reinforcing its hold on the country.

In the process, Obama also managed to quarrel with his closest regional ally, Israel, while utterly failing in his efforts to restore Jerusalem’s ties with yet another (former?) ally, Turkey. And we haven’t even mentioned the economy yet, where Obama appears poised to lead his country into what appears to be a devastating recession. Only recently he won the dubious honor of being the first president to see America’ s credit rating lowered while in office.

Longing for Bush

The ongoing disaster called Obama may prompt some of us to apologize

to another American president, one George W. Bush. What hasn’t been said about Barack Hussein’s predecessor? He was called stupid, incoherent and naïve; he was said to understand nothing and know nothing – yet now it turns out that the cowboy from Texas had a much better grasp on reality than his many critics. Even if his motives were at times as naïve as Obama’s, the former president combined them with an iron fist, immense determination and admirable loyalty to his allies.

Bush’s offensive in Afghanistan toppled the Taliban regime, thereby depriving al-Qaeda of its most important base. Iraq may have not been the ideal target for the next assault, yet Saddam Hussein was undoubtedly among the world’s cruelest dictators and his ouster was a supremely moral act. The president’s ability to execute a powerful military operation and take over Iraq with relative ease conveyed an incisive message to all regional leaders. The bad guys were shaking in their boots, Gaddafi volunteered to dismantle his nuclear program, Iran was cautious, and even Assad kept quiet.

Bush also shunned the terrorist Arafat, approved the razing of the Syrian reac tor, granted unqualified support

to Lebanese moderates and developed close relations with his allies throughout his term in office. Moreover, his “naïve” insistence on bringing democracy to the Arab world and his faith in the peoples of the region paved the way for the revolutions we are now witnessing. We can assume that had he still been in power, the fascinating process underway around us would have been managed in a wiser, more effective manner.

Yet Bush is alre

ady a distant dream, while Obama is a living and breathing nightmare. Now all that’s left is to wait and see whether America’s citizens will be able to remove him from the White House before he destroys everything.

Syria Makes a Very Bad Choice

I have always believed and taught that the most likely part of the old Roman Empire, which would foster the rise of the Antichrist, would be Syria. Syria has been hanging suspended between two choices: (1) Turn toward the United States in order to avoid sanctions, and to gain support from the western world in a war on terror, or, (2) Turn toward Iran to make an alliance and continue to give support to all the terrorist groups. On February 28 Syria apparently made its choice. The Iranian Defense Minister, Admiral Ali Shamkhani, came to Damascus and signed a new military pact with the Syrian Defense Minister, General Mustufa Tias. I believe this is a clear sign that President Assad has made his choice to put his trust in an Iran-Syria Axis to protect his administration from a coup by terrorist groups in his own country. President Assad has been active recently in communications with Washington to see what they would give him in the way of security if he should choose to give up sponsoring the many terrorist group offices in Syria, and Hizbollah in Lebanon.

Really, he did not have much of a choice. Had he turned pro-west and resisted the terrorist groups, his regime would have been overthrown in a matter of weeks. Syria’s new military pact with Iran likely contains an Iranian promise to invest in additional long range Scud-C missiles, now in mass production at Syria’s underground missile facility near Hamah, which is somewhat ironic in that the northern extent of Israel’s territory, after it defeats Syria at the end of the tribulation period, will extend to Hamah. The biblical name for Hamah is Hamath.

Ezekiel 47:17 – And the border from the sea shall be Hazar-enan, the border of Damascus, and the north northward, and the border of Hamath. And this is the north side.

Genesis 15:18 – In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

Ezekiel 47:19 – And the south side southward, from Tamar even to the waters of strife in Kadesh, the river to the great sea. And this is the south side southward.

If you want to envision the size of the Abrahamic Land Grant promised to the descendants of Abraham through Jacob (Israel), then

go southwest from the southernmost tip of the Gaza Strip along the coastline of the Mediterranean 35 miles and place a point on the shoreline. Then draw a line directly east from that point until you hit the Euphrates River of Iraq.

That is the southern border of the land God promised to the seed of Abraham through his grandson, the man whom God renamed Israel, the man Jacob, the son of Isaac, the promised seed God gave through Sarah. The northern border of the land grant may be visualized by finding Hamah or Hama in north central Syria, and then drawing an east-west line through it, which ends on the Mediterranean to the west, and on the Euphrates River to the east. This is the northern border of Abraham’s God given Land Grant. As you can see, this is a very large tract of land, 95 percent of which is occupied by descendants of Abraham through Ishmael’s twelve sons, the six sons of Abraham by Keturah, and Moab and Ammon, the two sons of Abraham’ s nephew Lot by hi

s own daughters. They are identified generally as Arabs, and some 95 percent of them are of the Islamic faith. Since they believe that the promises of God come through Abraham’s son Ishmael through Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s handmaiden, you can see the basic reason for the hatred between Arabs and Jews that has only intensified with the passage of the centuries (See Prophecy Updates 67 and 68 in the Archives).

I am confident that the new military pact will undoubtedly transfer the information necessary for the manufacture of the advanced Shihab-3 missile in Syria, as well as the financing for greater production of long-range artillery and ammunition.

The United States and Europe wanted Syria to follow Libya’s lead, but Bashar Assad was really in no political position to do so without being overthrown by the terrorist elements in his own country. There were four things the United States wanted Syria to give up.

(1) Scrap your long-range missile program.
(2) Scrap your WMD program.
(3) Drive all the terrorist groups out of Syria.
(4) Stop supporting Hizbollah in Lebanon.

I feel confident it was a choice Bashar Assad simply could not make. Iran and Syria are of the same mind on these four issues. Had Syria chosen to do those four things, it would have cut Iran’s flow of weaponry and the movement of terrorists to Hizbollah. Syria was left without any military backup with the fall of Iraq, so Assad has chosen to shore up and expand its existing ties with Iran, and create new military ties with them for a joint defense against the west. The strong showing by the radical Shiite hardliners in Iran’s elections last month was a strong element that Assad considered in making his choice. Iranian Shiites will continue to have a direct pipeline via Damascus airport for massive shipments of military hardware to the large Hizbollah terrorist army, which it has supported in southern Lebanon for years, as have the Syrians.

Rest assured that Israel has three very definite targets on its mind for the possibility of future air strikes, namely, the Syrian underground and surface facilities near Hamah, the Iranian nuclear complex centered ten miles south of Bushehr, and selected weapons supply depots in southern Lebanon (See Prophecy Update 160A). By no stretch of the imagination will Iraq remain a democracy any great length of time after the election of a new government. It will take less than two years after Iraqi elections for most of Iraq to become an Islamic Republic. And, when it does, there will be a military Islamic union stretching from Iran to Lebanon through Iraq and Syria.

Contrary to today’s popular belief, the antichrist will not come out of Europe, but out of the area that includes Syria, Lebanon, and northern Iraq (See Special Prophecy Update 74B and Whole Numbered Prophecy Updates 62 to 69).

And, contrary to today’s popular belief, the 10 toes of Daniel’s statue and the 10 horns on his fourth beast, which are the same 10 nations that will make up the coalition of nations that attack Israel in the last days, will not come out of Europe, but out of the southern half of the old Roman Empire, which included lands from Morocco to Iran, and as far north as Turkey (See Prophecy Updates 54 and 78).

As Syria Unrest Continues, Calls Emerge in Iran to Reexamine Attitude towards
Assad

Introduction

Since the outbreak of the Syrian protests in March 2011, Damascus’s strategic ally, Tehran, has been faithfully supporting the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad. As part of this policy, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared in June that Tehran would continue to stand by Damascus and that the Syrian regime could resolve the problems in the country by itself, without any foreign intervention.[1] Ahmadinejad’s deputy, Mohamed-Reza Rahimi, added that Tehran would support its ally under any circumstances, and that no wedge could be driven between them.[2]

Tehran has also stuck to its position that the protests in Syria are the result of an American-Israeli plot to undermine the Assad regime and harm the resistance camp. This stands in stark contrast to its position on the other uprisings in the Middle East (i.e., those in Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen, and Libya), which it describes as authentic popular anti-Western revolutions inspired by Iran’s Islamic Revolution.

For example, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said that the protests in Syria, unlike those in Egypt and Tunisia, stemmed from American-Israeli intervention.[3]

In mid-August, Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Ghadanfar Roknabadi, said that Tehran was not concerned for the stability of Assad’s regime and was confident of his ability to overcome the present crisis.[4] However, an Iranian diplomat told the website Kaleme that, anticipating Assad’s possible fall, the staff members of the Iranian embassy in Damascus have sent their families home or to the region near the Lebanese border, from which they can be evacuated in a hurry. The diplomat added that figures close to the Iranian administration are laying low in Syria, fearing attack by Syrians in revenge for Iran’s support of Assad’s regime, and that some of these figures have already left the country or are preparing to leave.[5]

Concerned about the possible fall of the Syrian regime – which would be a deadly blow to the Tehran-Damascus axis and to Iran’s status in Syria and Lebanon – Tehran is operating in three channels in order to help this regime:

A. Diplomatic action: Iran has warned Turkey, repeatedly and openly, to stop pressuring and criticizing the Syrian regime and to renew its cooperation with Tehran and Damascus. At the same time, Iran is attempting to recruit Arab and Russian support for Assad’s regime. As part of this effort, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi presented Russia with a joint Iranian-Syrian initiative meant to free Assad from Western pressure,[6] and Majlis National Security Committee chairman Alaeddin Boroujerdi, during a visit to Cairo, called on the Arab states to support Assad’s regime.[7]

B. Military aid: Contrary to Iran’s sweeping denials that it is providing military aid to Syria,[8] reports have it that Iran has been actively involved in suppressing the protests there. The Iranian online daily Mihan reported that, after the outbreak of the Syria protests, Iran reinforced the Syrian Brigade of its Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps,[9] which has been deployed in Syria for over two decades, with IRGC and Basij members who have experience in suppressing riots in Iran.[10] Al-Sharq Al-Awsat claimed that, in response to Turkish criticism, Iran is trying to conceal its active involvement in suppressing the Syrian riots. To this end, it plans to replace its Farsi-speaking soldiers in Syria with Arabic-speaking operatives, most of them from Ahvaz, whose Iranian identity is not so obvious.[11]

C. Economic assistance: According to the London-based Saudi daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, Iran has pressured Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki into pledging Syria $10 billion.[12]

Calls in Iran for Assad to Institute Reforms

Despite the Iranian regime’s censorship of coverage of the unrest in Syria by the country’s media, in recent months several Iranian media outlets have published cautious articles on this topic. The articles called in a very general way for President Assad to institute certain reforms in order to prevent his regime from collapsing, reflecting Tehran’s apprehensions regarding the damage such a collapse could inflict on Iran. For example, the conservative Iranian daily Quds called on Assad to hold free elections and to increase individual freedoms in order to assure the people’s maximal participation in the regime – which would preserve his regime as well as the resistance front. The paper added that Assad had largely managed to restore stability to the country, but warned that the unrest could erupt again during Ramadan. The paper also assessed that quiet would soon return to Syria because of the overall popularity of the Assad family, and because of the reforms that Assad would be carrying out – even if these were very much overdue.[13]

At the same time, in light of the Assad regime’s iron-fisted repression of its citizens and the continuation of the crisis, the media identified with the Iranian moderate-conservative camp have begun to back away from accusing the West of being behind the unrest in Syria, and are expressing doubts about justification for censorship of coverage of it.[14]

Calls to Renounce the Assad Regime

Moreover, calls have begun to emerge in Iran for the Iranian establishment to correctly assess the situation, and renounce Assad in order to salvage the Iran-Syria alliance and thus the Tehran-Damascus axis, as well as Iran’s interests in Lebanon, i.e. Hizbullah, and its other national interests. These calls are based on the assessment that Assad is likely to be deposed, and reflect concern for the fate of Iran’s strategic and political status, its national interests vis-à-vis Syria and Lebanon, and the ramifications of Assad’s ouster for Iran’s status in the region.[15]

Alongside these calls, which are coming mainly from circles who tend to be critical of the Iranian regime but consider themselves loyal to it, the Iranian regime is taking diplomatic action in an attempt to consolidate and lead a Muslim-Arab-Middle Eastern front that supports Assad but calls for him to institute reforms.

In this framework, Boroujerdi called at a Cairo press conference for the Arab countries to rally to Syria’s aid and act to end the crisis there, in order to preserve its stability as “the mainstay of the Palestinian resistance” and thus to advance the interest of the Islamic world and prevent Syria from falling into the hands of the Americans.

Boroujerdi called on Turkey to drop its threatening language towards Syria and expressed objections to calling the events in Syria

a “massacre.”[16] In addition, senior Iranian Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi addressed the Muslims and told them to fulfill their human and religious obligations and stop the American-Zionist plot in Syria, since this country is the forefront of the struggle against Israel and the barrier to Western imperialism.[17] Both Boroujerdi and Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi called on Assad to institute reforms.

Calls in Iran for Rethinking Iranian Support for Syria

The moderate conservative daily Ebtekar called on the regime to reconsider its continued unconditional support for Assad, warning that Iran could pay a price for hesitation, as it was already lagging behind Russia and Turkey in shifting its position vis-à-vis the protests in Syria. The moderate conservative website Asr-e Iran warned Assad that his violence against demonstrators was undermining his status and would lead to foreign intervention in the form of no-fly zones and security zones.

Ali Khoram, former Iranian ambassador to the UN and to China, stated that Iran must find a balance in its position towards the Syrian regime, and implied that Assad should step down in order to save his country and to prevent a military attack that would endanger Iran.

The Ayandenews website, which is identified with critics of Ahmadinejad, called on Hizbullah, and indirectly on Iran, to reconsider their absolute support for Assad and their opposition to the Syrian protesters.

Former Iranian Ambassador to UN: The Syrian People Will Have Its Way; Assad Must Sacrifice Himself to Save His Country

In an August 10 editorial in the Arman daily, Ali Khoram, former Iranian ambassador to the UN and to China, wrote: “…According to reports in the international media, which Iran has not denied, [Iran] has said that it would do this and that [i.e. intervene in Syria’s favor] if Syria were to be attacked…

“Saudi Arabia and Bahrain criticized Bashar Al-Assad and said that he must stop the clashes and arrive at understandings with the people. With this position, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, which customarily act much like [Assad] towards protests by their peoples, are preparing the ground for a scenario of Security Council[-sanctioned] military intervention in Syria, and Iranian support for Syria. Under such circumstances, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, and later the entire GCC, will act, in the framework of the conflict, against Syria and Iran.

“Thus, the Saudi and Bahraini statements reflect a political aspect more than a human rights aspect, and these countries seek to prepare public opinion for a possible scenario in which conflict breaks out in Syria, Iran supports it, and [Saudi Arabia and Bahrain] form a unified front against Iran.

“Iran must act prudently, so as to create a type of national reconciliation between Bashar Al-Assad and the Syrian people. It must act cautiously, because the actions of Syria’s leaders are creating conditions identical [to those that gave rise to] military intervention in Libya. This is not only because Saudi Arabia and the GCC desire to see Iran [entangled] in such a crisis, but also because Israel would like Iran to become entangled in it. In general, all the countries that are interested in settling accounts with Iran will rejoice if it joins the fray; they will be able to strike at it in the name of the international community.

“Unfortunately, it appears that Assad is late in emerging from the crisis, because… over 2,000 have died in the protests [in Syria], and this is no small number. It should be said that once there was a path to a solution for Syria, but now it is too late, and therefore Assad must perform an act of self-sacrifice in order to restore quiet to the country and protect it, and in order to spare it the tragedy that Libya is experiencing.

Iran sees in Syria a partner and an ally… which is why it wants to preserve this stronghold. But everything has a limit. If the situation in Syria continues [as it is], Iran will have to consider its long-term needs. It will try to preserve its interests in Palestine and Lebanon by laying down new roads and creating a new [political] structure in Syria. The [ reality]

in the world is that the people usually win in the end, and that is what will happen in Syria. If Iran adjusts and calibrates its positions, it will be able to protect its interests, whatever changes occur in Syria.

But if it [continues] to support the Syrian government and no-one else, and this government falls or remains crippled, [Syria] will not be able to protect any interests – neither its own nor Iran’s…”[18]

Ebtekar: Iran Must Dissociate Itself from Assad’s Oppressive Policy

An August 7, 2011 editorial in the moderate conservative daily Ebtekar warned: “…From day to day, the crisis in Syria deepens.

We can no longer shut our eyes to the reality. The sun cannot be covered up with mud… What is our position regarding the events in Syria? If we continue to present the Syrian protestors as ‘Western and Israeli elements,’ as opposed to the Bahraini, Yemeni, and Egyptian protestors, and [if] our media [continue to] avoid covering the situation in Syria – then the policy of the government and the media will certainly be brought into question. We must not deceive ourselves. Most of the Iranian public follows world events through various [non-Iranian] channels, such as satellite [TV], the internet, etc… Therefore, we are obligated to redefine our position regarding the events in Syria.

“Iran must take its absolute national interests into account, because several [other] countries in the region are reassessing their positions. Turkey supported Qadhafi until the moment this support became a disgrace. [Similarly,] as the star of [Syria’s] Ba’th Party faded, the Turks slowly increased their criticism [of Assad] in order to gain influence among the Syrian people and the Arabs.

“At the last moment, Russia, too, followed its usual custom and handed over its erstwhile friend [Syria] to its rival and superior [i.e., the U.S.]. After the Russians finish milking their friends, they quickly hand them over to the superior Western butcher, in order to share the meat. It would seem that their red line is [their own] national interests, which they will do anything to protect. In this climate, it would be wise for Iran to find a way to disassociate itself from [Assad’s] policy of oppression…” [19]

Asr-e Iran: The Present Situation Is Likely to Lead to Foreign Intervention in Syria
On August 1, 2011, a writer on the moderate conservative website Asr-e Iran wrote: “…It is extremely important for the current regime in Damascus to remain [in power], and it is vital as far as Iran is concerned, because if Syria is separated from Iran, Tehran’s maneuverability and bartering abilities in the regional arena will be severely compromised…

“It must be said that Bashar Al-Assad is not dealing with the protests the right way.

Brutal repression will never be the right response to what is happening in some of Syria’s cities. In cities like Hama and Dera, which are the main arenas of fighting, the Syrian army is using weapons such as tanks to suppress [the protestors], and it has so far massacred hundreds… Assad and his advisors must ask themselves how long the armed combat and violence can go on. Can they use more violence than Qadhafi has, and shell popular protests as he did? Did Qadhafi’s violence convince people to return to their homes?…

“The protestors in Hama, Dera, Deir Al-Zour, Aleppo, Bukamal, Latakia, Jisr Al-Shughour, and elsewhere… are part of the Syrian people, and the regime must meet their demands. If the current situation continues, it may encourage the supra-regional forces [i.e. the world powers] to deepen their intervention in Syria and realize their dreams, such as establishing a security zone and a no-fly zone over the main areas of protest. The path to restoring stability in Syria does not pass through the barrels of rifles or along the treads of tanks, but through the reforms that were promised.

They must be implemented quickly so that the demands of the people are met with a cultured and democratic response from the regime in Damascus.

“Assad must remember that there is an important difference between him and people like Yemen’s President ‘Ali ‘Abdallah Saleh – namely, that the dictators of the Arab world are mainly backed by the West and the Arabs. Even if their peoples do not like them, they make do with this Western and Arab support. Thus, the West supports the Saudi king, and the Saudis unconditionally support Saleh in Yemen; and in Bahrain, [King Hamad bin ‘Issa] Aal-Khalifa oppresses his people thanks to the support of his Arab friends [in] Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait. In Syria, this equation does not apply. On the contrary, the West and many of the Arab rulers who sit alongside Assad and laugh with him at [political] conferences are counting the minutes until he is ousted, and have secret ties with his opponents.

“Therefore, if Assad loves the legacy of his father and does not wish for his government to fall with a crash, he has no choice but to rely on the support of his people. It is a strategic error for a person to harm his main source of support. Nowhere in the world is violence the proper way to respond to protests; it will only lead to more violence in return…”[20]

An August 8 editorial on Asr-e Iran read: “By putting off the reforms and continuing the violence, Assad’s regime is, in fact, preparing the ground for action against it. This is the most significant strategic error made by Bashar Al-Assad, who will face even tougher times and an uncertain end…” The website also noted that, as part of Russia’s hardening of its position toward Syria, and despite its attempts to prevent the UN Security Council from imposing sanctions on this country, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had warned Assad that if the present situation continued, decisions would be taken against Syria. The website cautioned that Assad’s regime would likely face intense international pressure, including military intervention, which might be detrimental to Iran’s standing in the region.

Ayandenews: We Must Think of the Day after Assad’s Downfall

The website Ayandenews, which is identified with critics of Ahmadinejad, posted an editorial titled “If Assad Falls, What Shall We Do with Syria?”. It asked: “What plan have the Islamic resistance [i.e., Hizbullah] and Iran formulated for their continued relations with Syria, if Assad falls?” The editorial warned that Assad’s fall would be a severe blow to Hizbullah, and could even spell the end of this organization. It advised Hizbullah, and indirectly Iran, to reconsider their unreserved support of Assad and their hostility to the Syrian opposition, saying: “Due to their national roots [as patriotic Syrians], the Syrian protesters are displeased with Israel’s occupation of the Golan, and as members of the Sunni school [of Islam], they feel solidarity with the Palestinians. These are [facts] that the resistance front should take into account. In this situation, the Islamic resistance should reassess its strategy of sweeping support for Assad and opposition to the Syrian protesters, in order to afford themselves a way out of the severe crisis [that will form] vis-à-vis Israel should Assad fall.”[xxi]
