Egyptian-born doctor and surgeon Ayman al-Zawahri is al-Qaida’s second-in-command expected to succeed Osama bin Laden following his killing in a firefight with U.S. forces in Pakistan.

Zawahri has been the brains behind bin Laden and his al-Qaida network, and at times its most public face, repeatedly denouncing the United States and its allies in video messages.

In the latest monitored by the SITE Intelligence Group last month, he urged Muslims to fight NATO and American forces in Libya.

“I want to direct the attention of our Muslim brothers in Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and the rest of the Muslim countries, that if the Americans and the NATO forces enter Libya t hen t

heir neighbors in Egypt and Tunisia and Algeria and the rest of the Muslim countries should rise up and fight both the mercenaries of Gadhafi and the rest of NATO,” Zawahri said.

Born into an upper-class family of scholars and doctors in an upscale Cairo neighborhood, the cerebral Egyptian in his late-50s is second after bin Laden on the FBI “most wanted terrorists” list.

Both bin Laden and Zawahri eluded capture when U.S.-led forces toppled Afghanistan’s Taliban government in late 2001 after al-Qaida’s September 11 attacks on U.S. cities.

But on Sunday bin Laden was killed in a firefight with U.S. forces and his body was recovered, U.S. President Barack Obama said. There was no word on Zawahri.

Bespectacled, with grey hair and a grey beard, Zawahri won prominence in November 2008, when he attacked then U.S. President-elect Obama as a “house Negro,” a racially-charged term used by 1960s black American Muslim leader Malcolm X to describe black slaves loyal to white masters.

In a subsequent video, in September 2009, Zawahri returned to the attack on Obama, saying he was no different from his predecessor George W. Bush.

“America has come with a new deceptive face … It plants the same dagger as Bush and his predecessors did.

Obama has resorted to the policies of his predecessors in lying and selling illusions,” said Zawahri, clad in white robe and turban.

Like bin Laden, Zawahri has long been thought to be hiding along the rugged Afghan-Pakistan border.

The last video of Zawahri and bin Laden together was broadcast by al Jazeera on September 10, 2003. It showed them walking in mountains, calling for jihad and praising the September 11 hijackers.

“Brain to the body”

Analysts have described Zawahri as al-Qaida’s chief organizer and bin Laden’ s clo

sest mentor. “Ayman is for bin Laden like the brain to the body,” said Montasser al-Zayat, a lawyer in Cairo who once represented Zawahri.

In a video after the September 11 attacks, Zawahri called them a “great victory” achieved “thanks to God”.

He has not always been so ebullient.

As U.S.-led forces drove out the Taliban in 2001, Afghan sources described him flying into a fury at the nonchalance of Taliban fighters playing badminton behind the front lines while U.S. bombs rained from the skies.

Zawahri and bin Laden met in the mid-1980s when both were in the Pakistani city of Peshawar to support guerrillas fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan, and worked closely thereafter. But the alliance was not Zawahri’s first foray into militancy.

Born in 1951, he was the son of a pharmacology professor and grandson of the grand imam of Al Azhar, one of the most important mosques in the Muslim world.

He graduated from Egypt’s most prestigious medical school in 1974 and did a second degree in surgery. By then he was involved with the Muslim Brotherhood, a non-violent group seeking the creation of a single Islamic state.

When the militant Egyptian Islamic Jihad was founded in 1973, he joined.

W hen members posed as soldiers and assassinated President Anwar Sadat in 1981,

he was among 301 people arrested.

He went on trial but was cleared. He did, though, spend three years in jail for having an unlicensed pistol. On his release, Zawahri made his way to Pakistan where he worked with the Red Crescent treating fighters wounded in the Afghan war.

Taking over the leadership of Jihad in Egypt in 1993, he was a key figure in a campaign in the mid-1990s to set up a purist Islamic state there, in which more than 1,200 Egyptians died.

In 1999, an Egyptian military court sentenced Zawahri to death in absentia.

He has also been indicted in connection with the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Days after those bombings, he telephoned a Pakistani reporter, denying responsibility, but urging Muslims to “continue their jihad against the Americans and Jews”.

An hour later, U.S. cruise missiles hit al-Qaida’s Afghan training camps. Both bin Laden and Zawahri escaped injury.

Zawahri’s wife, Azza, and three daughters were reported killed in a bombing strike on the Afghan city of Kandahar, the stronghold of the Taliban, in early December 2001.

Zawahri has appeared regularly in a series of video or audio messages since then, criticizing the U.S. war in Iraq,

praising the Taliban and the suicide bombers who attacked London in 2005 and urging Muslims to help victims of an earthquake in Pakistan.

He has occasionally shown he is aware of criticisms by Muslims who dislike the group’s indiscriminate violence.

“Seize a state”

In a 2005 letter to Iraq al-Qaida leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Zawahri suggested it was time to end beheadings of captives and start acting as more of a political leader in anticipation of the eventual U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.

In 2008, Zawahri held an unprecedented question and answer session online with al-Qaida sympathizers who repeatedly questioned him over the group’s killings of civilians in Iraq.

Zawahri in his responses denied killing innocents, and said that if any died in attacks it was through error or necessity, for example if they were being used as human shields.

Zawahri has repeatedly called for al-Qaida to seize control of a state, a goal the group has never come close to despite its alliance with Afghanistan’s late 1990s Taliban rulers.

“Confronting the enemies of Islam and waging a jihad against them require a Muslim authority, established on Muslim territory that raises the banner of jihad and rallies Muslims around it,” he wrote in a 2001 essay, Knights Under The Prophet’s Banner.

“If we do not achieve this goal, our actions will be nothing more than small scale harassment.”

I am as overjoyed

as most other Americans that we have judged and killed an evil tare of Satan for his ungodly actions against humanity. It would be great if this act could destroy the spirit of Antichrist, but it will not. It will only be destroyed when Christ returns at his Second Advent. For now it will intensify the radical fanaticism of Islamic Jihad advocates, finally resulting in the final battle of Armageddon. The Antichrist is likely to arise out of the Middle East sea of humanity as the supreme tare we identify as the greatest “man of sin” and “the Wicked.”

US sources report that Osama bin Laden was buried at sea to avoid creating a permanent shrine on land for jihadist terrorists to visit. Saudi Arabia was first asked to take the body and refused.

US military and intelligence sources disclose that Abbottabad, where al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was shot dead Sunday night, May 2, by a squadron of US Seals, is a Pakistani garrison town where a large military base is located. His villa was just 100 meters away from Pakistan’s military academy and 120 kilometers from the capital, Islamabad and Pakistani intelligence headquarters. Far from being holed up in a remote mountain cave, he lived in comfort in a million-dollar three-storey villa with his close family around him in a semi-urban area.

These disclosures indicate that the Pakistani military and its intelligence must have known who was living in the exceptionally large, heavily guarded villa in their midst and in plain sight and kept the knowledge from the Americans.

The villa compound was encircled by 12-15 meter high walls topped by 7 foot privacy wall and barbed wire accessed through two steel, electrically-operated security gates. The Pakistanis could not have missed it when it was built in 2005 and more buildings were added later.

It is also emerging that the town of Abbottabad came to the notice of US intelligence four months ago: It was there that Indonesian al-Qaida’s Umar Patek was arrested in Jan.

2011. He was on the run from a $1 million US bounty on his head, for helping mastermind the 2002 suicide bombings of nightclubs in Bali that killed 202 people. It would therefore seem that Abbottabad in Pakistan’s North West Frontier region provided sanctuary not only for bin Laden but also for some of his high-profile Al Qaeda operations officers.

In his announcement of the al Qaeda leader’s death, President Barack Obama glossed over Pakistan’s complicity in keeping him hidden because – quite simply, the Afghanistan War may have lost its main target but it is far from over and the United States needs Islamabad to bring it to a conclusion. Taliban, which denies bin Laden was killed, will do its utmost to prove it is fully capable of fighting on without him and going on to defeat the Americans, NATO and Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s army.

What effect the passing of the jihadist terrorist mastermind will have on future Pakistani cooperation with the US in the Afghanistan war is still moot. Islamabad may decide to go with the Taliban rather than the United States because of its overriding fear of Indian expansion and interest in using Afghanistan to gain strategic depth by means of a controlling influence in Kabul. To this end, Pakistani leaders may throw their support behind the Taliban rather than the Americans who will eventually leave. This would confront the US-led coalition forces fight’ in Afghanistan with an escalated military challenge henceforth.

I do not expect a hand to appear on Bashar Assad’s wall to repeat the message God gave to King Belshazzar of the impending events that were in the immediate future, for both himself and his kingdom.

However, it seems Assad, and his kingdom, are now headed for at least a similar fate.

Syria PM: Gov’t to propose political, economic reforms

Assad’s forces kill 70 in Deraa, protesters remain defiant; US-based dissident to ‘Post’: Assad ‘dead man walking.’

Syrian forces, backed by tanks, shelled parts of Deraa and stormed its main mosque on Saturday, residents said, trying to quell resistance in the city at the heart of a sevenweek uprising against President Bashar Assad.

Residents said earlier they could hear heavy gunfire in the old city where the Omari Mosque, a focal point for protests, is located.

At least 40 people were killed in Deraa on Friday, activists said, and another six on Saturday.

Roughly 70 people were reported killed nationwide over the weekend.

Farid Ghadry, the Syrianborn head of the US-based Reform Party of Syria, told The Jerusalem Post he believes that Syria is descending into a sectarian civil war, and that its president’s days are numbered.

Even if Assad survives a bit longer, Ghadry wrote in an email from Washington, “he will be a dead man walking. It is hard to put humpty dumpty back together. I cannot ever imagine anyone visiting with him or dealing with him after what he has done.”

In Damascus, Al-Jazeera’s Rula Amin – one of the few journalist for foreign news outlets still in Syria – reported that according to Deraa residents, troops appeared at the home of Ahmad Sayasneh, Imam of Omari Mosque, on Saturday and, not finding him, shot his son dead on the spot.

Amin said that in recent days Syrian television had aired confessions of people who admitted to membership in terrorist organizations, and to having been paid off by the imam. She later wrote on her Twitter feed, “Omar Qashash, 85 years old, a leading member of the people’s Democratic Party, was arrested in Aleppo today from a public park.”

Another opposition leader, Hassan Abdel Azim, was also reported arrested.

Around 100 people gatheredSaturday outside Al Jazeera’s offices in Damascus, the Qatarbased network reported on its website, accusing it of “lies” and “exaggeration” in its coverage of the protests.

“Al Jazeera, Jewish satellite channel” and “People of Qatar, curb your Emir,” read placards brandished by the demonstrators, who also carried photos of Assad.

An estimated 138 members of the ruling Ba’ath Party in the besieged town of Rastan have resigned, a human rights campaigner in contact with the town said Friday.

The activist added that the resignation declaration was being read out at a demonstration in the town, 20 km. north of the city of Homs, when members of military intelligence and gunmen loyal to Assad fired at the crowd, killing 13.

Newly appointed Syrian Prime Minister Adel Safar said his government would draw up a “complete plan” of political, judicial and economic reforms, the state news agency SANA said on Saturday. Troops and tanks first swept into Deraa last Monday to crush pro-democracy protests against Assad that have spread across the country of 20 million, posing the biggest challenge to his rule and prompting Western powers to impose sanctions.

Assad’s brother, Maher, commands the Fourth Mechanized Division that stormed the city on Monday.

A resident said Karak, a hilltop in Deraa’s old quarter, bore the brunt of the shelling. “The shelling has stopped. There are snipers on the roof of the mosque,” the resident told Reuters, adding that forces appeared to be in control of the old quarter for the first time.

Deraa, a city near the border with Jordan with a population of 120,000, is the cradle of a six-week uprising that began with dem ands for more freedom,

and an end to corruption.

It developed into a movement to overthrow Assad following a violent state crackdown, in which a Syrian rights group said at least 500 people had been killed.

The crackdown prompted Western powers to take their first concrete steps in punishing Syria for the bloodshed.

Washington imposed new sanctions on government figures, including Assad’s brother and cousin.

EU diplomats said they reached an initial deal to impose an arms embargo and would consider further measures.

At a meeting in Brussels, ambassadors of EU governments gave preliminary approval to an arms embargo and a ban on equipment used for repression, such as body armor, explosives or vehicles that carry weapons. The agreement will have to be formalized in the coming days.

Envoys also asked EU experts to prepare plans for possible travel bans and asset freezes that could be imposed on the Syrian leadership, diplomats said. EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton said in a statement after the meeting that the measures were intended to achieve “an immediate change of policy by the Syrian leadership.”

“We will continue to work with our partners to ensure that those responsible for the violence are held personally to account,” British Foreign Secretary William Hague said.

aa killed 19 when they fired on protesters who were trying to enter the city from nearby villages in a show of solidarity, a medical source said. Al Jazeera’s Amin tweeted that between 17,000 and 20,000 people from nearby villages marched on the city. Syrian rights groups put Friday’s death toll at 62.

Demonstrations also flared on Friday in the central cities of Homs and Hama, Banias on the Mediterranean coast, Qamishli in the Kurdish east, Harasta, a Damascus suburb, and the capital itself.

SANA said on Friday that “armed terrorist groups” had killed soldiers near Deraa. It said groups had opened fire on the homes of soldiers in two towns near Deraa, and were repelled by guards. But a witness in Deraa said Syrian forces fired live rounds at thousands of villagers who descended on the besieged city.

A rights campaigner in Deraa said on Friday that makeshift morgues in the city contained the bodies of 85 people he said had been killed since the army stormed the city six days ago.
