Rights campaigner in city says pro-democracy demonstrators shot at during large protest, scores injured; forces arrest opposition leader Seif during Damascus protest, his daughter says; violence erupts around country.

Syrian security forces shot dead five pro-democracy demonstrators when they fired at a large protest calling for political freedoms in the city of Homs on Friday, a rights campaigner in the city said.

“Five bodies were picked up in Bab al-Sibaa area. There are scores of injured protesters. Thousands are still marching peacefully in other parts of Homs,” said the rights campaigner, who asked not to be identified.

Protests broke out across Syria on Friday, with thousands calling for freedom in the Kurdish east and dozens briefly marching in Damascus to demand

the ousting of President Bashar Assad, activists and witnesses said.

Also on Friday, security forces arrested opposition leader Riad Seif at a pro-democracy demonstration in the Midan district of Damascus, his daughter and human rights campaigners said.

“My father was shoved into a bus with other protesters who were detained during the demonstration near the al-Hassan mosque,” Jumana Seif told Reuters.

Seif, 64, has prostate cancer. He spent a total of eight years as a political prisoner on charges of “weakening national morale”, a charge regularly used by the Syrian authorities against opposition and independent figures critical of Syria’s autocratic rule.

The army, which stormed the southern city of Deraa last month to crush resistance in the cradle

of the seven-week uprising, deployed tanks in the central city of Homs and security forces quickly dispersed the Damascus protest.

Witnesses said security forces also opened fire at protesters in the town of Tel, just north of the capital, wounding demonstr

ators.

Activist Wissam Tarif said protests also took place in the southern town of Jassem, coastal Banias, and Amouda in the east.

Human rights campaigners say army, security forces and gunmen loyal to Assad had killed at least 560 civilians during pro-democracy demonstrations that started in March. Thousands have been arrested and beaten, including the elderly, women and children, they said.

Officials give a much lower death toll and say half the fatalities have been soldiers and police, and blame “armed terrorist groups” for the violence.

The United States, which called the army crackdown in Deraa “barbaric”, imposed further targeted sanctions last week against Syrian officials and Europe’s main powers have been pushing for similar European Union measures.

Syria: Tanks ‘deploy around Rastan’ after protests

Tanks and armoured vehicles have deployed near Rastan, north of Syria’s capital Damascus, witnesses say.

Earlier, thousands of people in the north took part in protests calling for greater social and political freedoms.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on President Bashar al-Assad to end a six-week clampdown on opposition supporters.

Some 2,843 people are confirmed as detained, although campaigners say the total could be nearer to 8,000.

They say detainees have been subjected to torture. The US has denounced the crackdown as “barbaric”.

Human rights groups say about 560 people have been killed across the country in anti-government protests.

Large numbers of people are said to have been arrested in recent days, and there are reports of police using tear gas and making arrests at Wednesday’s protests.

The protests, which began on 15 March, pose the most serious challenge to four decades of rule by the Assad family in one of the Arab world’s most repressive and tightly controlled countries.

Foreign journalists are barred from Syria, and reports cannot be verified.

Cities under siege

In his phone conversation with Mr Assad, Mr Ban “reiterated his calls for an immediate end to violence against and mass arrests of peaceful demonstrators in Syria, and for an independent investigation of all killings that happened during the protests”, said a statement from his office.
He also “called on President Assad to immediately grant access to the United Nations in order to assess the humanitarian needs of the affected civilian population”.

Earlier reports from local activists said tanks were heading for the central Syrian city of Homs after anti-government protests were held there on Tuesday night.

Activists told the BBC that security forces had fanned out inside Homs, and that army tanks were heading towards the city.

Some 1,000 people chanted slogans in support of the southern city of Deraa, where troops rounded up hundreds of men in house-to-house raids.

On Tuesday, Syrian tanks and troops reportedly surrounded the coastal city of Baniyas.

Deraa, the southern city where the protests kicked off in mid-March, has been under siege since the weekend.

On Wednesday, there were fresh reports of gunfire and mass arrests there.

The army is still not allowing anyone into the city, and supplies of food and medicine are running low, residents say.

Communication lines are still down, but electricity has been restored in most areas, they add.

On Tuesday, US state department spokesman Mark Toner said the use of tanks, arbitrary arrests and power cuts in Deraa was “quite barbaric and amounts to the collective punishment of innocent civilians”.

The authorities say they have found rebel arms caches in Deraa. But the protesters insist their movement is entirely peaceful.

Despite the government crackdown, Syrians are continuing to protest in several cities and towns, including Damascus, where they appear to have come under live fire from police and plainclothes security forces.

Elsewhere in the capital, students at Damascus University staged a sit-in at the faculty of economics. They have issued a statement condemning “the massacres, killings and the arrests committed against peaceful demonstrators”.

Torture allegations

Also on Tuesday, a late-night demonstration by 1,000 students at Aleppo University – in Syria’s second city – was broken up by security forces using tear gas and firing live bullets, reliable sources say.

No injuries were reported, but dozens of students are being arrested, their mobile phones and laptops confiscated, the sources say.

More vigils and protests are planned in the coming days.

Amnesty International, and many of the protesters themselves, say the detainees are subjected to beatings and torture.

“The use of unwarranted lethal force, arbitrary detention and torture appear to be the desperate actions of a government that is intolerant of dissent and must be halted immediately,” Amnesty’s Philip Luther said.

Last week hundreds of members of Mr Assad’s ruling Baath Party resigned in protest at the crackdown.

European nations have called for sanctions against the regime of President Assad.

Washington has already tightened its sanctions against senior Syrian officials.

The nation of Pakistan will not be among the 10 horns of Revelation and Daniel initially attacking Israel, but will be among those immediately attaching themselves to Antichrist’s Kingdom once he has driven Israel into the Negev wilderness.

There will be a massive caving-in by all the Islamic nations not in the original 10 conspiracy to quickly unite with the winning team, joining it because of a great fear of this powerful and suddenly very successful Islamic leader. Within a matter of weeks after he drives Israelis into the Negev and conquers Egypt, all the Islamic nations and others with majority Islamic populations along, and north and south

of a line from Morocco to India to Indonesia, will be quick to become a part of the final Kingdom of Antichrist. His Kingdom will be greater in size than any of the Kingdoms of Daniel which preceded it. It is in this huge Caliphate the mark of the beast will be applied, and those who refuse to take it will be killed, many by beheading.

All this is going to come on the world so quickly it will stun the Gentile powers, and they will block the power of each other from interfering in what is initially happening. In the end of Antichrist’s Reign of Power, he will send out a call to all nations to come down and help him finally destroy the remnant of Israel in the Negev. Europe, China, Russia, and Africa will answer the call, and they will assemble the greatest force ever assembled on this earth in Israel to launch the final great battle of Armageddon against God’s chosen people, the nation of Israel. But, at this time Michael, God’s angel, will stand up to defend Israel, and the Antichrist, the False Prophet, and their massive army will be destroyed by the returning Son of God, Jesus Christ.

The seat of the Antichrist’s Kingdom will be destroyed and replaced forever by the Kingdom of the Son of God.

Pakistani Editor on Bin Laden’s Killing: ‘Now, With Irrefutable Evidence of His Death Taking Place in Abbottabad, Islamabad Has Egg on Its Face’

In an article on the killing of Osama bin Laden by U.S. forces in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad, senior Pakistani editor Badar Alam notes that Pakistan, which had been claiming that the Al-Qaeda leader was not on Pakistani soil, has suffered a major setback to its image and trustworthiness, especially in its relationship with its neighboring nations and the U.S.

“Not that Pakistan has a great international image to speak of.

But whatever trust or goodwill the country has been trying to build vis-à-vis Afghanistan, India and the United States in the recent past has suffered a serious blow,” wrote Badar Alam, who is editor of the Dawn media group’s Herald magazine.

He added: “The fact that the most wanted international terrorist, and a sworn enemy of Pakistan’s state and government, has been residing within a stone’s throw from the country’s military academy is something that will continue to disturb and upset many in the country.”

The website of The Times of India daily, in a report from its Islamabad correspondent, also raised question on the Pakistani military’s support for terrorist groups, and noted that the killing of bin Laden will “jeopardize relations between Islamabad and Washington.”

The report raised question marks about the Pakistani military’s support for militant groups, noting: “The death of bin Laden in Abbottabad, a city mostly dominated by Pakistan’s military, has raised many questions regarding the role of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) [and] whether his whereabouts were known to the spy agency. Bin Laden was not living in an ordinary residence.”

Badar Alam: Pakistan Has Been In Denial “Even in the Face of Mounting International Evidence… That the Main Leaders of Both Al-Qaeda and Taliban Are Living and Operating From Its Territory”

“With Osama bin Laden dead, Pakistan will have three major worries to contend with. Though these relate to three different aspects of Pakistan’s state policies, they all emanate from the same source: Pakistan’s troubled relationship with Islamic terrorist organizations and their targets – that is, the United States, Europe and India.

“These aspects pertain to Pakistan’s internal image as a member of the international community, the country’s internal image in the eyes of its own people and the increasing or diminishing threat of terrorist attacks in the coming days and months.

“Not that Pakistan has a great international image to speak of. But whatever trust or goodwill the country has been trying to build, vis-à-vis Afghanistan, India and the United States, in the recent past has suffered a serious blow.

“For years Pakistan has denied that bin Laden was in Pakistan.

Now with irrefutable evidence of his death taking place in Abbottabad, Islamabad has egg on its face. It will be difficult in the months and years to come to live in the same denial mode that Pakistan has been trying to live in even in the face of mounting international evidence and pressure that the main leaders of both Al-Qaeda and Taliban are living and operating from its territory and that the country must do something to get rid of them.

“Now that the evidence is there that they are/were/have been living in Pakistan, hence international pressure is bound to increase even more. How Pakistan chooses to deal with such a situation will determine whether Pakistan gains some of its lost image or continues to have its reputation tarnished further.”

“The Most Wanted International Terrorist, and a Sworn Enemy of Pakistan’s State and Government, Has Been Residing Within a Stone’s Throw of the Country’s Military Academy”

“Secondly, the fact that the most wanted international terrorist, and a sworn enemy of Pakistan’s state and government, has been residing within a stone’s throw of the country’s military academy is something that will continue to disturb and upset many in the country.

“How could the intelligence agencies not know about him? Why have the military and the government been so uninformed about the presence of potentially the most dangerous man on the earth residing within the vicinity of perhaps one of Pakistan’s most sensitive military sites?”

“Post-Bin Laden, Terrorism May Enter a New, Even More Uncertain Phase”

“Expect talk shows, newspaper columns and blogosphere to be flooded with questions likes this in the next few days and weeks.

The questions are important, indeed.

“How can a foreigner without any travel documents – valid or otherwise – live along with his wife, children and armed guards in highly sensitive and supposedly high security areas? Why did the Pakistani government and the military never find out that the world’s most wanted man was living right under their noses without any lawful authority? Was the Pakistan army chief addressing a military passing out parade only a few days ago only a few kilometers from where bin Laden was? How dangerous such a situation was

“The flip side of this debate is already making itself felt on the television channels.

This pertains to questions about Pakistan’s sovereignty. How on earth could an American military operation take place in the heart of the country – in fact, a short distance from its military academy? What about the breach of Pakistan’s airspace and the sanctity of its national boundaries if

the American attackers came from Afghanistan

“If, however, they were already in, why could Pakistan not have a tab on their movement within its own territory? Did the government in Islamabad know about the get-Osama operation

? Did the military and the intelligence know about it? If yes, how much did they know and what was their role in the operation? If no, why not? These questions will be asked by political leaders, mainly from the right of the political spectrum, as well as very vocal media and intelligentsia.

“Lastly, post-bin Laden, terrorism may enter a new, even more uncertain, phase in Pakistan. There may be an immediate ‘reaction’ from bin Laden’s supporters among the Pakistani Taliban as well as other religious and sectarian militant groups in the shape of suicide bombings and other attacks against the symbols of state, security and government in Pakistan as well as against civilian targets in the urban areas.

“More alarmingly, there may emerge some new individuals and groups – so far unknown – who may take up bin Laden’s cause and increase terrorist activity in Pakistan in particular and across the globe in general…”
“In this scenario, Pakistan must brace for more difficult, more uncertain and more turbulent times.”

Times of India: “Pakistan’s Military Has Not Released Any Statement About Bin Laden’s Killing”

“The killing of Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of 9/11, in a ground operation carried out exclusively by U.S. troops on late Sunday night near Pakistan’s military academy in Abbottabad, could jeopardize relations between Islamabad and Washington.

“For hours, Pakistan kept mum over the news of bin Laden’s death. It broke its silence about 11 hours after the incident, when the country’s foreign office confirmed that the operation against bin Laden was entirely the handiwork of the U.S. forces. The statement came after long hours of deliberations and brainstorming between the country’s top civilian and military leadership in the Pakistan president house at Islamabad.

“‘In an intelligence-driven operation, Osama bin Laden was killed in the surroundings of Abbottabad in the early hours of this morning. This operation was conducted by the U.S. forces in accordance with declared U.S. policy that Osama bin Laden will be eliminated in a direct action by the U.S. forces, wherever found,’ Tehmina Janjua, Pakistan’s foreign office spokesperson said. Following Janjua’s statement, Pakistani… [Prime Minister] Yousuf Raza Gilani called the killing of Osama bin Laden a great victory… adding that he didn’t know the details of the U.S. operation.

“Pakistan’s military has not released any statement about bin Laden’s killing. Some observers believe that Pakistan would like to be seen as not having helped in this operation because it would become the immediate target of the terrorist network.”
Former ISI Chief Hamid Gul: “Americans Have Been Given a Free Hand in Pakistan…”

“However, Pakistan’s former ISI chief, General Hamid Gul, said that Osama may have been in Pakistan for [medical] treatment. ‘Osama’s presence raises questions about the Pakistan intelligence’s ability,’ he said.

“Gul was critical of U.S. activities in Pakistan. ‘Americans have been given a free hand in Pakistan and they do whatever they want. They have hoodwinked us and are after Pakistan’s nuclear assets.’ He said there will be a backlash from Al-Qaeda if it transpires that Pakistan helped the U.S. in this operation.”

“Since the Start of the War on Terror, Pakistani Leaders Have Denied the Presence of bin Laden in the Country”

“The death of bin Laden in Abbottabad, a city mostly dominated by Pakistan’s military, has raised many questions regarding the role of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) whether his whereabouts were known to the spy agency. Bin Laden was not living in an ordinary residence. The walls of three-storey building were 12- to 18ft high, topped with barbed wire. Access to the compound was severely restricted. Bin Laden’s compound was roughly eight times larger than other houses in the area.

“Since the start of the war on terror, Pakistani leaders have denied the presence of bin Laden in the country. His death on Sunday night caught the Pakistani leadership unawares. His presence just next to the Kakul military academy in Abbottabad which produce scores of officers every year for the Pakistan’s army came as a big surprise. Contrary to frequent media/intelligence speculation in the last several years that Bin Laden could be hiding in the rugged tribal areas of Pakistan or even across the border in Afghanistan, the Al-Qaeda’s iconic leader was found in a rather peaceful and scenic suburb of Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad.

“Sources inside Peshawar’s U.S. consulate informed… [The Times of India] that the American officials working in the north-western city were suddenly told on Friday to leave because of threats of their abductions.

“The killing of bin Laden came as relations between the U.S. and Pakistan have reached to its lowest point since the start of the war against terror. Since 9/11, the U.S. has given the Pakistan’s military nearly $20 billion for counter-terrorism campaigns.

“The U.S. chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, during his last visit to Islamabad, publicly criticized Pakistan’s military for not acting against Al-Qaeda linked insurgent groups sheltering in Pakistan’s tribal region of North Waziristan.

“However, last week Pakistan’s army chief, General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, told the passing out parade of cadets from the Kakul military academy that Pakistan had broken the back

of terrorism in the country.

“The killing of bin Laden within few hundred meters distance from the military academy has evaporated Kayani’s tall claim into thin air.”

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood Sticks with Bin Laden

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood on Monday used the honorific term “sheikh” to refer to bin Laden, and defended “resistance” against the U.S. presence in Iraq and Afghanistan as “legitimate.” The Muslim Brotherhood’s response to bin Laden’s death may finally end the mythology that the organization is moderate or at the very least, could moderate once in power.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s promise that its “moderation” means rejecting violence includes a gaping exception: it endorses violence against military occupations, which its leaders have told me include Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Bosnia, and Palestine.

Muslim Brotherhood leaders have endorsed attacks on Israeli civilians as an exception to their no-violence-except-against-occupation exception, viewing all of Israel

Assad is losing his grip, says Israeli DM

Syrian security forces swept into the coastal city of Banias on Tuesday, a protest leader said, taking control of another urban centre from demonstrators challenging the authoritarian rule of President Bashar al-Assad.

“They moved into the main market area.

The army has sealed the northern entrance and security forces (sealed) the south,” Anas al-Shughri told Reuters.

“They armed Alawite villages in the hills overlooking Banias and we are now facing militias from the east,” he said.

Assad, a member of the minority Alawite sect whose family has ruled majority Sunni Muslim Syria for 41 years, is pursuing a violent crackdown on six weeks of protests which began with demands for greater freedoms and now seek his overthrow.

Last week he sent tanks and soldiers into the southern city of Deraa, where the uprising broke out on March 18. Syrian rights groups say more than 560 civilians have been killed by security forces since the start of the unrest.

Activists said arrests continued across Syria on Tuesday. Speaking from Egypt, Ammar Qurabi, head of the National Organisation of Human Rights in Syria, said the latest wave of detentions had snared more than 1,000 people.

International condemnation of the crackdown has intensified since the Deraa assault, which revived memories of the 1982 repression of an armed Islamist uprising in the city of Hama by Assad’s father, President Hafez al-Assad.

“Syria should not go through another massacre like Hama. We have reminded them of this,” Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who has sent envoys to Damascus and spoken to Assad several times during the unrest, told Turkey’s A-TV channel.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said the European Union should impose sanctions on Syrian leaders including Assad in response to the violent suppression of pro-democracy protests.

Germany also repeated a call for EU sanctions. “The Syrian government’s continuing brutal actions leave the European Union no choice but to press firmly ahead with targeted sanctions against the regime,” Deputy Foreign Minister Werner Hoyer said.

Israel, which has relied on Assad and his father to keep their front line quiet for nearly four decades — despite Israel’s occupation of the Golan Heights and Syria’s support for militants opposed to Israel — said Assad was losing his grip.

“I believe Assad is approaching the moment in which he will lose his authority. The growing brutality is pushing him into a corner, the more people are killed, the less chance Assad has to come out of it,” Defence Minister Ehud Barak said.

Gaza Hamas prime minister Isma’il Haniya said that despite the dispute between Hamas and Al-Qaeda, Hamas condemns the assassination of “jihad fighter” Osama bin Laden. He said, “This is a continuation of the American policy based on violence and on the shedding of Arab and Islamic blood.” Palestinian Authority spokesman Ghassan Al-Khatib said that the assassination “will benefit worldwide peace, but the important thing is to defeat the sheikh and the violent style that bin Laden and others implemented and encouraged.” Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt deputy leader Dr.

‘Issam Al-‘Arian said that bin Laden’s death removes one of the reasons for violence in the world, and predicted that revenge would come. Al-Gama’a Al-Islamiyya Shura Council chairman Sheikh Safwat Abd Al-Ghani said that the incident would not end the dispute between Al-Qaeda and the U.S., while council member Sheikh ‘Issam Abd Al-Magid predicted that bin Laden’s path and outlook would fade following his death. Leading Salafi preacher Omar Bakri said in Lebanon that bin Laden’s death expresses the loss of a leader in the region, but that it was good that he had achieved the martyrdom that he wanted. Bakri too said that there would be revenge operations. Muslim clerics said that the burial of bin Laden at sea that was a violation of Islamic law, which permits such burial only if the death took place at sea. Former Muslim Brotherhood UK Leader Praises Osama Bin Laden

In a live question-and-answer session titled “Bin Laden Dead: What Next?” on Onislam.net, Dr. Kamal Helbawy answered questions about the situation in the Arab and Muslim world following the assassination of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Dr. Helbawy, an Egyptian, served as official spokesman of the Muslim Brotherhood in the West from 1995-1997. While living in London, he helped create the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB, on whose board he still serves) and the Muslim Association of Britain (MAB). During the onislam.net discussion, Dr. Helbawy praised bin Laden for being a leader of jihad, saying “We appreciate him as a rich man living in KSA who left this luxurious life and moved to a hard life in mountains and caves. He helped his Afghan brethrens and participated in Afghan jihad effectively.” Dr. Helbawy also accused the U.S. of being behind the 9/11 attacks, saying, “I think that what the Americans claim about September 11th was a trick and a bait they accused Al-Qaeda of. All evidences and indications refer that the Americans are the ones who planned this matter.” He further wrote, “I ask Allah to have mercy upon Osama bin Laden, to treat him generously, to enlighten his grave, and to make him join the prophets, the martyrs, and the good people.”

Report: Owner Of House Where Bin Laden Was Killed Has ‘Bogus’ Pakistani ID Card

The owner of the residential complex where Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed has a “bogus” National Identity Card (NIC) of Pakistan, according to a Pakistani website. The website of ARY News TV noted that the NIC bears the name of the house owners as Arshad s/o Naqeeb, supposedly residents of Tangi Fas area of Charsadda district. “The residents of Tangi area also say that no man with such name was residing in the area,” according to the report.

Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden’s four children and two wives have been arrested, sources said. A close friend of bin Laden named as “Akbar” was also arrested and transferred to an undisclosed location. Osama bin Laden was killed today in a U.S. special forces operation in Abbottabad, less than 100 km from the Pakistan capital Islamabad. A security alert was declared in Abbotabad and adjacent areas following the U.S. operation in which bin Laden was killed.

Senior Iranian Legislator: Bin Laden Killed To Prevent Leakage Of Intelligence, Info About Joint U.S.-Al-Qaeda Terror Ops

Iranian Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission head Alaeddin Boroujerdi has said that U.S. officials and media often claim to have have killed Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, and that the recent report of his death is nothing new Boroujerdi told reporters in Tehran today that he couldn’t confirm the report of bin Laden’s death, saying, “They (Americans) have announced several times that bin Laden is dead. That is not new.” He added that even if the report is proved to be true, it wouldn’t be “great work,” considering that the U.S. forces attacked Afghanistan 10 years ago on the pretext of confronting the elements who were behind the September 11, 2011 attacks on the U.S.

The Iranian news agency Fars reports that Lebanese Gen. (ret.) Amin Hatit said today that the U.S. released the report on the killing of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in a bid to make up for its political and security failures in Afghanistan.

“Bin Laden’s death announcement by U.S. President Obama is kind of a compensation for the great failures of the U.S. in Afghanistan,” Hatit said. He added underlined that President Obama had released the report on bin Laden’s death in a tactical move to boost the morale of the U.S. military forces in Afghanistan.

India Says Bin Laden’s Killing In Pakistani Town Proves

Pakistan Is A Sanctuary Of Terrorists

India today said that the killing of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad proves that Pakistan is a sanctuary of terrorists, according to an Indian website. In a statement, India’s Interior Minister P. Chidambaram said that the U.S. government informed India that “Osama bin Laden had been killed by security forces somewhere ‘deep inside Pakistan.” “This fact underlines our concern that terrorists belonging to different organizations find sanctuary in Pakistan,” he said. Chidambaram added, “We take note with grave concern that part of the (U.S.) statement in which President (Barack) Obama said that the firefight in which Osama bin Laden was killed took place in Abbotabad ‘deep inside Pakistan.”‘ In that context, Chidambaram raised the subject of the November 26 Mumbai terror attack plotters still being in Pakistan. “We believe that the perpetrators of the Mumbai terror attack, including the controllers and handlers of the terrorists who actually carried out the attack, continue to be sheltered in Pakistan,” he stated.

General Musharraf: U.S. Operation To Kill Bin Laden Violation Of Pakistan’s Sovereignty, Al-Qaeda’s War Has Not Ended

Former Pakistani ruler General Pervez Musharraf has said that the killing of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was a success for Pakistan but the operation carried out to kill him

was a violation of Pakistani sovereignty, according to a Pakistani television channel. According to a report on Pakistan’s GEO News TV, General Musharraf said that Osama bin Laden had declared war on Pakistan and was responsible for the killings of people in the country. The operation of the U.S. forces inside Pakistan was violation of the country sovereignty, he said, adding that nobody should be allowed to conduct an operation in Pakistan. General Musharraf said that he would have been glad if the operation had been carried out by Pakistani forces. The former Pakistani president said that he was amazed to know that Osama bin Laden was killed in Abbotabad. Those who think the war has ended with the elimination of the Al-Qaeda leader are wrong, he said. It would however affect Al-Qaeda’s performance but they will continue to exist as Al-Qaeda is being driven by an ideology not individuals, General Musharraf added. He said that Al-Qaeda taught terrorism to the Taliban in Pakistan and they were responsible for training them in making suicide jackets and IEDs.
