Earthquake on Interconnecting Fault Structure Shakes Earth from Israel to Italy!

January 8, 2006

http://www.tribulationperiod.com/

I have taught for many years about the interconnecting fault structure that connects Italy, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, and the Red Sea. It is the great earthquake of Revelation 6:12 in the Jordan Rift Valley that will produce a chain reaction of great pressure releases in this fault structure from Israel to Turkey to Rome, which will announce the beginning of the last three and one-half years of the tribulation period. The 6:12 earthquake is the first of many in the book of Revelation.

Revelation 6:12 – And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

If you would like to view this long interconnecting fault structure on our Web Site, click “Birth Pangs” on our Menu, then click on “Birth Pang Figures,” then click on Figure Number 3 to enlarge it, and notice the dashed fault line extending north through the Red Sea, Israel, Lebanon, and Turkey, which connects with the east-west fault line extending across northern Turkey, south of Greece, and to the boot heel of Italy.

The article by the Associated Press and the JPost Staff in the Jerusalem Post, which follows, is perhaps a preview of the area most affected by the Revelation 6:12 earthquake, but the coming earthquake will have a magnitude between 8 and 9, and will set off a chain of earthquakes of the same magnitude along it from one end to the other.

A powerful earthquake shook Greece on Sunday and was felt as far away as the Middle East. Minor damage was reported in southern Greece, and authorities on the island of Crete said three people were slightly injured.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute, which initially gave a magnitude of 6.4, later amended it to 6.9 and said the epicenter was located beneath the seabed, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) south of Athens and 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of the island of Kithira.

“It was a very powerful quake which shook all of Greece. There have been dozens of aftershocks, four with a magnitude of 5,” said institute head Giorgos Stavrakakis. “The quake occurred deep undersea and that’s what saved us.”

The earthquake occurred at 1:34 p.m. and was felt as far away as in Cairo, Egypt, about 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) southeast of the epicenter, as well as in Amman, Jordan.

Similarly, the Geophysical Institute of Israel reported that the quake was felt in Israel as well.

The quake was felt across southern Italy – in particular around Naples and Sicily – but there were no reports of damage or injuries, Italian news reports said. Some people ran into the streets and others phoned civil protection agencies or the fire department seeking information.

Clarice Nassif Ransom, a USGS spokeswoman in Washington, said scientists project that as many as six million people may have felt the earthquake.

“This is an area which regularly gives out strong quakes so we are not surprised. But we don’t expect any serious aftershocks,” Stavrakakis said.

Authorities on Kithira said the airport and about 50 old buildings had also been slightly damaged.

“We’ve had some damage to old buildings but nothing serious has occurred, and we have no reports of injuries,” said Kithira mayor Andreas Kalligeros.

The US Geological Survey, based in Colorado, and the National Earthquake Information Center in Denver gave a preliminary magnitude of 6.7, while the University of Thessaloniki, which also has a geodynamic institute, reported a preliminary magnitude of 6.9. The reason for the discrepancies in magnitude was not immediately clear.

Israelis are Warned to Prepare for Earthquake

By Hillel Fendel

January 20, 2011

Given that Israel has not had a major earthquake in nearly 84 years, the Ministry of National Infrastructures is waging a campaign for earthquake preparedness. Films of bookshelves crashing down atop baby cribs and detailed instructions are part of it.

In July 1927, the northern Dead Sea area – Israel’s major earthquake-prone area – suffered a major quake that left nearly 300 people dead. Prior to that, the city of Tzfat, in the Galilee, was largely wiped out in 1837 when an earthquake rocked the area; 5,000 people were killed there, and another several hundred in Tiberias.

Earthquake researchers say that statistically, another big quake should be feared in Israel within the coming years – including now. In recent years, the northern Dead Sea region was hit by a 4.4 quake in November 2007, and a 5.3 rocker in February 2004. In terms of statistics and probabilities, however, a larger one is still expected.

The Infrastructures Min istry information campaign

is currently running on the internet and other media. “Don’t let an earthquake catch you unready,” it warns threateningly. “Home is not always a safe place. A strong earthquake in Israel is just a question of time, and it is liable to cause the destruction of many homes in Israel. Make sure today that your home meets earthquake readiness standards, and that all family members know how to behave when one hits.”

The Ministry’s website explains that though earthquakes cannot be forecast in advance, “there are a number of ways in which we can prepare for them, prevent loss of life and to significantly reduce property damage.” One way is to make sure that one’s house or apartment building meets earthquake construction standards. In general, buildings built before 1980 do not – and these include, of course,

a large number of buildings in many cities and towns throughout Israel. These can be strengthened and fortified, “and the responsibility for such is primarily upon us, the citizens.”

In Judea and Samaria, where most homes have been built since 1980, this particular problem is not acute.

In addition, precautions should be taken to ensure that even homes that do not collapse are earthquake-safe.

The Ministry’s website states that one should not have shelves or heavy objects above beds; bookcases, air conditioners and the like should be properly fastened to walls, heavy objects should not be stored high up, and the like. “It is also advisable to have on hand a supply of food and water for emergencies, a first-aid kit, a radio, emergency lighting and baby equipment, as well as copies of essential documents.”

The Ministry also has ideas for family earthquake-drills: “Decide in advance, together with all immediate family members… where your ‘safe place’ during an earthquake is going to be.

In an apartment building a safe place could be the Protected Space (“Mamad”) or the staircase, and in a one-story home it could be outdoors.

Hizballah’s eleventh-hour pullback from siege of UN sites and troops

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report

January 21, 2011, 6:40 PM (GMT+02:00)

With minutes to spare, Wednesday night, Jan. 19, Hizballah called off its plan to hold to siege UN buildings in Beirut and their staff of 1,000, as a show of strength in the face of the threatened UN Hariri

how do antibiotics affect birth control pills

tribunal’s indictment of its high officials for the Hariri assassination six years ago. DEBKAfile’s military sources report.

The sites targeted were the offices of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia which Hizballah militiamen were ordered to seal against ingress and egress, while its armed units were to encircle and pin down UNIFIL patrols in South Lebanon and cut off isolated UN outposts and lookout posts.

Hizballah also planned to besiege the offices of the UN’s Special Lebanon Emissary Michael Williams, UNWRA which deals with Palestinian refugees and various UNIFIL contact offices in Beirut.

This desperate action was planned to blackmail UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon into discussing the reassessment of the STL’s indictment of Hizballah’s security and intelligence chiefs for the murder of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri.

According to our sources, at 1800 hours Lebanese time, as Hizballah forces were about to set out on their missions, they received an order from their leader, Hassan Nasrallah to hold their horses for now. He offered no explanation for the postponement but, according to some sources, he was deterred by being informed of consequences of this act. Ban would have asked the Lebanese government to send troops to relieve

nolvadex tablets

the Hizballah siege on UN institutions, failing which he would have called on the UN Security Council to send armed units to Beirut to rescue the beleaguered UN staffers.

This step might well have ended in US, French and German marines lifting of the warships opposite Lebanese shores and landing in Beirut.

A day earlier, on Tuesday, militiamen of the Shiite Hizballah and Amal movements, unarmed and clad in black uniforms, took up positions in seven quarters of the capital, to prove the Shiites capable of capturing Beirut. They were withdrawn that night after making the point.

That was the Lebanese Shiites’ concerted response to the gauntlet thrown down Monday by the Special Lebanon Court probing the 2005 Hariri murder, as reported earlier by DEBKAfile.

The Special Lebanon Court registrar Herman von Hebel announced Tuesday, Jan. 18 that if things go well, “we may see the start of the trial toward September or October … with or without an accused.” A day earlier, the STL prosecutor Daniel Bellemare submitted his draft indictment to the pre-trial judge Daniel Fransen in The Hague, thereby establishing three facts in the case of the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.

body bro good levitra stuff up whats yea yea

1. An approximate date has been set for the trial to begin, irrespective of the extreme upsets in Lebanon over the case.

2. The prosecution file includes names of accused individuals, members of Hizballah, who will be summoned to appear before the UN court. Bellemare stated in a video clip Tuesday that the accused he cited are presumed innocent even after they are confirmed by the judge – until the prosecution proves their guilt beyond reasonable doubt in court.

3. Any of the accused defying the court summons will be tried in absentia as DEBKAfile reportedly exclusively first in its weekly edition on Dec. 24, 2010 and again in daily DEBKAfile on Jan.

13.

The registrar also stated Tuesday: “The pretrial judge is very keen to move the process forward as fast as possible.”

This means that Fransen will make an effort to hand down his decision on the indictments within 6-10 weeks, much earlier than the several months originally reported, according to DEBKAfile’s sources. The court realizes that the longer the court process, the deeper Lebanon will sink into crisis.

Von Hebel also referred to the joint effort Syrian president Bashar Assad, Turkish premier Recep Erdogan and the Qatari emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa al-Thani were making in Beirut for a compromise that would free the Lebanese government of its commitment to honor the international tribunal’s warrants and contribute to its funding. The registrar said: “We know for sure it is not easy to get accused persons arrested.

best cialis levitra viagra which

The problem with international tribunals is that they do not have a police force. We are dependent on the cooperation of states.”

He then remarked: “The tribunal’s budget is $65.7 million for 2011 should not be affected by the collapse of the Lebanese government which is obliged to pay 49 percent. The obligation is for the state, not a government.”

That comment is the key to the dispute – both over the tribunal’s funding and its legitimacy which Hizballah challenges by refusing to hand over its officials for trial.
Von Hebel, the tribunal’s registrar. made it clear that the Lebanese state, not its government, will be held accountable for upholding the UN court’s decrees. In other words, the effort engineered from Tehran and Damascus to replace the Hariri government with an alternative will not get Hizballah off the hook. Indeed any administration in Beirut that defies the court lays Lebanon open to a complaint to the UN Security Council by the UN tribunal’s judges and a demand for sanctions pending compliance.

Is Hezbollah’s eye mainly on Syria

?

By Michael Young

Commentary

Thursday, January 20, 2011

Two questions are essential in approaching the events of the past week in Lebanon. The first is, Can Syria can accept a Hezbollah-dominated government in Beirut? The second, Why did Damascus push its political allies to bring down the government of Saad Hariri before ensuring beforehand that Walid Jumblatt and his bloc would decide against naming Hariri as prime minister?

The answer to the first question is, bluntly, no. Syria cannot any more accept formal Hezbollah hegemony over Lebanon than it could a Lebanon ruled by the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1976, when it intervened militarily to prevent such an outcome. The reasons are obvious.

buy kamagra kamagra jelly and cialis united king

A Hezbollah-led government would substantially heighten the prospect of war between Lebanon and Israel, leading to an Israeli intervention that could drag Syria into a conflict not of its choosing.

Another reason, equally compelling as far as Syria’s President Bashar Assad is concerned, is that ceding to Hezbollah the power of governance in Lebanon would mean effectively surrendering the country to Iran. Instead, Assad wants Lebanon to be surrendered to Syria. That is why Damascus has sought to exploit the discord over the government to do the only thing it can do to enhance its influence over Lebanese affairs: play Hezbollah off against Hariri.

This leads us to the second question. In fact, it answers it. The Syrians never had any illusions that Jumblatt would abandon Hariri.

can you take zyvox and levaquin together

For the Druze leader, that would have been political suicide. Jumblatt’s power of financial patronage comes mainly through Saudi Arabia; several of his parliamentarians are elected in Sunni-majority districts; and around 30 percent of the electorate in the Shouf is Sunni.

female viagra

Jumblatt never wanted to abandon Hariri, and Assad didn’t make him do so. If I were a Hezbollah member, that would worry me.

And it may well have, because the party’s threat of escalating actions in the street may, partly, be understood best as one facet of a complicated minuet between Syria and Hezbollah. This could be Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah’s way of saying that enough room was given to the Syrians and Saudis, to no avail. Now Hezbollah will try something different. Which still doesn’t answer why Syria compelled its allies to take a far-reaching decision leading nowhere, that has bought more time for Daniel Fransen, the pretrial judge of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, to confirm prosecutor Daniel Bellemare’s indictment.

One explanation is that Syria had no other choice.

buy zithromax non-prescription

For Assad, the Syrian-Saudi dialogue was always a cover for Syria’s political comeback to Lebanon. Iran and Hezbollah sanctioned it because they could not avoid doing so, but on the assumption that it would ultimately compel Saad Hariri to break off Lebanon’s ties with the Special Tribunal. Assad was more flexible. The Syrian leader grasped that if Hariri went that far, he would be politically weakened and unable to stand up to Hezbollah, therefore of no use to Syria in its game of manipulating Lebanese contradictions. So the Syrians showed a double face, urging the Lebanese government to undermine the tribunal but otherwise doing nothing to impose this

When the Obama administration blocked a Syrian-Saudi deal that would cripple the tribunal, Assad found himself in a tight spot. Without a Syrian-Saudi mechanism, how would Damascus maneuver in Lebanon? Iran and Hezbollah were seeking to pursue a more aggressive path, and the Syrians were at risk of losing the political initiative to them. So Assad hoped to avert this by toppling the government, leading to deadlock, in that way keeping the keys of a solution in his own hands. Expecting Saudi Arabia to withdraw from Lebanese affairs, which it did yesterday, Assad sought to use the summit with Qatar and Turkey to maintain the upper hand in any settlement over a new government. While the Syrian-Saudi label may still be employed, the reality is that Assad is on his own, in search of an elusive Qatari and Turkish fig leaf to press his advantage. The Saudis, in turn, are said to be far less enthusiastic about the Syrians than they were.

Assad sees opportunities ahead.

Unless Hezbollah steps in to prevent it, Saad Hariri will be asked to form a new government next week. The Syrians will not oppose this, their major incentive being that Hariri’s return will mean heightened tension between him and Hezbollah, which Damascus will exploit in its own favor. Hezbollah’s pressure on Hariri will ultimately play into Syria’s hands, until the moment when the Special Tribunal’s indictment is confirmed and Assad will contrive to step in and broker a settlement allowing him to seize a large share of the Lebanese pie. Ironically, the organization that today holds the largest share of that pie, the portion Syria covets most, namely leadership of the main security and intelligence services, is Hezbollah.

Hezbollah may escalate its actions, but this will only complicate matters.

blinklist com levitrai

Making Lebanon ungovernable will not sway the Special Tribunal. And against whom will destabilization be directed

add comment effects levitra side

? There is no government. If Hariri is tasked with forming one, Hezbollah will use instability to curtail the prime minister-designate’s ambitions. The downside is that this may delay the cabinet’s formation, giving Fransen ample time to approve the indictment.

Hezbollah is in a bind. There is no reason to celebrate, however, because Lebanon as a whole will pay a heavy price. But that won’t affect what goes on in The Hague. Which is why Hezbollah should seriously consider looking for a negotiated way out of its impasse.

THE FIVE MAJOR SECTS OF ISLAM

According to the Traditions, Muhammad predicted that his followers would become divided into seventy-three sects, every one of whom would go to hell, except one sect, the religion professed by himself and his companions. However the number of Islamic sects, now over 150, has far exceeded Muhammad’s prediction.

SUMMARIES OF THE MAJOR MUSLIM SECTS WITHIN ISLAM

THE SUNNI MUSLIM SECT

Sunni Muslims are followers of the Hanifa, Shafi, Hanibal and Malik Schools.

index of reverse search

add comment effects levitra side

They constitute a 90% majority of the believers in Islam, and are considered to be mainstream traditionalists. Because they are comfortable pursuing their faith within secular societies, they have been able to adapt to a variety of national cultures, while following their three sources of law: the Qur’an, Hadith and consensus of Muslims.

The Sunnis are by far the largest sect in the Muslim world. They take the title of Najiyah, meaning those who are being saved. They acknowledge the first four Khalifs as the rightful successors of Muhammad. They received the “six correct books” and belong to one of the schools of jurisprudence founded by the four Imams.

The Sunni emphasize the power and sovereignty of Allah and his right to do whatever he wants with his creation, as strict predeterminism is taught. Its rulership is through the Caliphate, the office of Muslim

after clomid

ruler who is considered the successor to Muhammad. This successor is not through hereditary lineage. The Sunni believe, based on specific provisions of the Qur’an and the Sunna, that the Muslim people are to be governed by consensus (ijma’) through an elected head of state, the khalifa, according to democratic principles.

THE SHIITE MUSLIM SECT

The Shi’ites (also known as the Ja’firi school) split with the Sunni over the issue of the successor to Muhammad. This split occurred after the assassination of the fourth caliph in 661. Shi’ites believe that the successor to Muhammad should have been Ali, his son in law, and that subsequent successors should have been through his lineage through his wife Fatima. The shi’ites strenuously maintain that they alone are right in their understanding of Islam, and like the Sunnis, they call themselves “al-Muminun,” or the “true believers.” They believe in the divine right of the successors of ‘Ali. His rightful successor is now concealed, they say, but will appear at the end of the world as the “Mahdi,” the one rightly guided by Allah, thus able to guide others. They reject the “six correct books” of the Sunnis, and have five collections of their own.

Shi’ism is broken into three main sects. The Twelve-Imam (Persia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Pakistan, and Syria); the Zaydis (Yemen); the Ismailis (India, Iran, Syria, and East Africa). Each group has differences of doctrine.

Shi’ite theology includes a doctrine known as the five supports. These are Divine Unity (tawhid), prophecy (nubuwwah), resurrection of the soul and body at the judgment (ma’ad), the Imamate (imamah), and justice (‘adl). The first three are found in Sunni Islam, albeit with some differences of emphasis. The Imamate, however, is the essence of Shi’ism, and the last, justice, is an inheritance from the Mu’tazilites, or rationalists, whose system is in many ways perpetuated in shi’ite theology.

Shi’ites are numerous in Iran, where they have deposed the Shah and in his place, installed the Ayatollah Khomeini and enforced Islamic law as the rule of the government. Khomeini has gone beyond that by declaring that his command is ass good as that of the prophet Muhammad.

THE WAHHABI SECT

The founder of the Wahhabi sect was ‘Abd al-Wahhab, born in Nefd in A.D. 1691. He maintained that the Muslims had departed from the precepts of Muhammad. He accepted only the Quran and the Traditions, rejecting the two other foundations, Ijma and Qiyas. He condemned the worship of dead holy men at tombs. He said, “They run there to pay the tribute of their fervent prayers. By this means they think that they can satisfy their spiritual and temporal needs.

the true way of salvation is to prostrate one’s self before Him who is ever-present and to venerate Him – the one without associate or equal.”

The war cry of the Wahhabis was “Kill and strangle all infidels which give companions to Allah.” On the day of battle,

the Wahhabi founder gave each soldier a letter addressed to the Treasurer of Paradise. It was enclosed in a bag which the warrior suspended from his neck. The soldier believed that by dying in battle he would go straight to Paradise, without being examined by the angels Munkar and Nakir. Many Iranian prisoners today have confided to their Iraqi captors that they were duped into hanging a small Quran around their necks so they would become invisible in battle and not be seen by their enemies.

The Wahhabis condemn astrology, trusting in omens, and believing in lucky or unlucky days, as well as praying at tombs. They disallow the use of a rosary but attach great merit to counting the ninety-nine names of God on their fingers.

THE SUFFI SECT

The meaning of the name Suffi is disputed. Suffis are a Muslim sect that have set aside the literal meaning of the words of Muhammad for a supposed spiritual interpretation. Their system is a Muslim adaptation of the Indian Vedantic philosophy. They believe that only Allah exists. All visible things are really distinct from Him. There is no real difference between good and evil. Allah fixes the will of man.

solution.

Suffis are most numerous in Iran, once called Persia. The three chief Persian poets, Jami, Sa’di, and Hafiz were Suffis who dwelt on love to God. Many of the writings of the Persian Suffis contain indecent passages. The Suffis are divided into innumerable sects which find expression in the numerous order of Faqirs, or Darweshes. Faqirs are divided into two great classes, those who govern their conduct according to the principles of Islam and those who do not, although they all call themselves Muslims.

THE BAHAI SECT

The Bahai sect began with a man who was born in 1817 in Tehran, Persia, and whose real name was Mirza Hussayn Ali. In 1847 he declared that he was the glory of Allah, “Bahau Allah” from two Arabic words. His acquaintance with a religious movement led by a man called the Bab(Gate) convinced him that he himself was the prophet that the Bab had predicted would appear.

In 1850, the Persian government executed the Bab for his teachings, and Mirza took over the leadership of the movement. In 1863, ten years after he was banis

hed to Baghdad, Bahau Allah declared he was the expected prophet. From 1868 until his death in 1892, he lived in a prison colony in what is now Akka, Israel. He tried to unite the three monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam through his writings, which comprise 100 volumes.

Iran Tightens Its Belt and Its Fist

Iran spends $100 billion each year to pin down petrol, gas and electricity prices, besides the cost of staples. The symptoms of the malaise are legion: tea kettles simmer all day; the streets clog with recreational drivers out for a spin; lights glare because no one can be bothered to turn them off. “We can do it because we have oil,” Iranians used to tell incredulous visitors. Last month the price of petrol went up by 75% and that of diesel by more than 2000%. Electricity and water bills are expected to soar. The price of some types of bread has quadrupled.

The state’s growing authoritarianism is expressed in different ways, from the hectoring tone of official speeches to the now total intolerance of the liberal opposition. Newspapers may no longer mention former presidential candidates Mousavi and Karroubi, and the country’s biggest liberal political party has been banned.

Sunni vs. Shiite in Saudi Arabia

Joshua Teitelbaum

On Dec. 16, the Saudi city of Medina witnessed severe clashes between Sunnis and Shiites at the time of the annual Ashura gathering. Wahhabism, the leading stream of Islam in Sunni Saudi Arabia, is extremely anti-Shiite, since certain Shiite practices conflict with Wahhabi Islamic practice. Shiites, who constitute 10-15% of the Saudi population, have suffered greatly under Saudi rule.

Depredations have included killings, arbitrary arrests, job discrimination, and forbidding of their religious ceremonies.

With Shiite Iran on the cusp of nuclear arms, and with demonstrated victories by Iran’s proxies in Iraq, Lebanon, and Gaza, the Saudi rulers cannot afford to be seen coddling local Shiites. Saudi Sunnis expect their leaders to defend the honor and position of the Sunni majority, lest Shiite victories generate a sea change and reverse the age-old dominance of the Sunni sect of Islam.

Pope: Christians Replace Jews as ‘Most Persecuted Minority’

January 17, 2011

by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu

Jews, known for centuries as the most persecuted minority, have been replaced in this role by Christians, according to Pope Benedict XVI, who hinted that he was referring to the Islamic tidal wave that is sweeping the world.

Carefully avoiding singling out Muslims for the mistreatment of Christians, however,

the pope recently appealed to European nations as well as the Muslim world to protect what he called the most persecuted religion in the world.

Recent attacks on Christians in Egypt, Nigeria and Iran have claimed dozens of casualties. The pope stated, “This succession of attacks is yet another sign of the urgent need for the governments of the region to adopt, in spite of difficulties and dangers, effective measures for the protection of religious minorities.”

Iran has a different explanation for attacks on Christians. Ghazanfar Rokn-Abadi, its ambassador to Lebanon, said his country is a model for religious freedom and that “250,000 Christians are living in Iran peacefully and safely.” He blamed the Jews for any physical attacks.

Responding to the report on the pope’s statements, U.S. State Department spokesman Philip Crowley declined to directly answer a reporter’s question, “Who do you think is doing this?”

“I’d be very wary at this point about making any sweeping statements about whether what’s happened in Iraq has a bearing on what’s happening in other countries such as Egypt or Nigeria,” Crowley said. “These are all being investigated.”

The International Christian Concern was more direct.

ICC president Jeff King stated, “Anti-Christian hatred arising from Islam has flowed into 2011, as seen in the horrific attacks in Egypt, Pakistan and Iraq already this year,” he said.

The ICC also noted that mainstream media rarely report the phenomenon of persecuted Christians despite its having becoming more common.

The most widespread persecution of Christians has been in the Middle East, where Israel is the only country that grants freedom to Muslims and Christians, as well as Jews, to freely practice their religion. Prior to the Six-Day War in 1967, when Jerusalem was reunited and Judea and Samaria were restored to Israel, Jordan’s rulers closed all Jewish and Christian sites, except for high-profile official visits.

Christianity had been the dominant influence in Bethlehem until the first and second Arab intifadas, when Muslim rulers and clerics increasingly harassed Christians, forcing most of them to flee.

The Palestinian Authority has blamed Israel for the Christian exodus, but research has documented the harrassment by Muslims.

In Egypt, the government did not take kindly to the pope’s call for “effective measures” to protect Christian minorities in the Middle East. Cairo recalled its ambassador to the Vatican, saying that “Egypt will not allow any non-Egyptian party to intervene in our internal affairs under any pretext.”

Despite witnesses saying that an off-duty Muslim policeman shouted “Allahu Akhbar´(Allah is great) as he shot and killed a Copt last week, Egypt claimed that the murderer acted because of “his personal state” and not because of “the religion of his victims.” The shooter aimed his pistol at women, presumed to be non-Muslims, who were not wearing a head covering.

Nevertheless, Egypt’s ambassador to the Vatican denied there was any persecution of Christians in his country. “Persecution is a big word,” she said. “In order to prove that there is persecution, you have to be very careful. This is a legal term which should not be used casually.”

Western countries are in a state of denial, asserted Clifford D.

May, president of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, a policy institute focusing on terrorism.

Writing in the Boston Herald on Saturday, he cited the bombing of Christian churches in Egypt, Iraq, Nigeria and the Philippines and Indonesia, the recent arrests of Christians in Iran, and the death penalty handed down to a Christian woman in Pakistan for insulting Islam.

“The reality is this: Within the Muslim world today are regimes, movements and individuals convinced that their religion justifies – and benefits from – the most heinous atrocities,” May wrote. “They are determined, ruthless and lethal – as Christians and other minorities across a broad swath of the world have been finding out.”

“If we in the West fail even to speak up for them, can we really expect moderate Muslims to do more?”

The Kingdom of Meroe

A new period in the history of Nubia began with the transferral of the royal necropolis, which moved to just outside the royal residence in Meroe.

female viagra

The ancient kingdom of Kush came to an end and became the kingdom of Meroe. Although the god Amun did not disappear entirely from the scene, he lost his supreme position in the Nubian pantheon, to be replaced by Apedemak. This Nubian god of war and victory became the patron deity of the Meroitic state. He was represented as a man with a lion’s head. New deities made their appearance, such as Sebiomeker, another form of the god Aton, creator of humankind. Certain ancient (Egyptian) gods remained popular, like Anubis who escorted the dead on their journey, and Isis the mother goddess who concerned herself with people’s lives and fortunes. Indeed, in the Meroitic period, this goddess was mythologically wedded to the local god Apedemak.

A remarkably large number of reigning queens, known as Kandakes, is recorded in the history of Meroe. This forms a link with the matriarchal traditions of Africa and the high status accorded to women in Nubian culture. Already in the period of the Kushite Dynasty in Egypt, leading social positions, among them that of king, were passed down through the female line.

Kings traced their lineage back through their mothers. The successor to a dead king would generally bc the son of his sister. This explains why Napatan and Meroitic monarchs would often marry their own sisters so that their sons might succeed them. The king’s mother, as mother of a god, held a position of enormous respect, somewhat comparable with that of Mary the mother of Christ, the son of god in the Christian religion. The Meroitic queen-mother also bore the title of pharaoh. In some instances the queen mother would rule alongside her son if he were a minor, also jointly with her husband, and – remarkably enough sometimes independently.

The Meroitic kingdom developed independently of Egypt, which passed successively under Persian, Greek, and, finally, Roman domination. During the height of its power in the second and third centuries BC, Meroe ext ended

over a region from the third cataract in the north to Soba, near present-day Khartoum, in the south. The pharaonic tradition persisted among a line of rulers at Meroe, who raised stelae to record the achievements of their reigns and erected pyramids to contain their tombs. These objects and the ruins of palaces, temples, and baths at Meroe attest to a centralized political system that employed artisans’ skills and commanded the labor of a large work force. A well-managed irrigation system allowed the area to support a higher population density than was possible during later periods. By the first century BC, the use of hieroglyphs gave way to a Meroitic script that adapted the Egyptian writing system to an indigenous, Nubian-related language spoken later by the region’s people. Meroe’s succession system was not necessarily hereditary; the matriarchal royal family member deemed most worthy often became king. The queen mother’s role in the selection process was crucial to a smooth succession. The crown appears to have passed from brother to brother (or sister) and only when no siblings remained from father to son. Although Napata remained Meroe’s religious center, northern Kush eventually fell into disorder as it came under pressure from the Blemmyes, predatory nomads from east of the Nile.

However, the Nile continued to give the region access to a Mediterranean world. Additionally, Meroe maintained contact with Arab and Indian traders along the Red Sea coast and incorporated Hellenistic and Hindu cultural influences into its daily life. Inconclusive evidence suggests that metallurgical technology may have been transmitted westward across the savanna belt to West Africa from Meroe’s iron smelteries. Relations between Meroe and Egypt were not always peaceful.

As a response to Meroe’s incursions into Upper Egypt, a Roman army moved south and razed Napata in 23 BC. The Roman commander quickly abandoned the area, however, as too poor to warrant colonization. In the second century AD, the Nobatae occupied the Nile’s west bank in northern Kush. They are believed to have been one of several well-armed bands of horse- and camel-borne warriors who sold their vagility to the Meroitic Population for protection; eventually they intermarried and established themselves among the Meroitic people as a military aristocracy. Until nearly the fifth century, Rome subsidized the Nobatae and used Meroe as a buffer between Egypt and the Blemmyes. Meanwhile, the old Meroitic kingdom contracted because of the expansion of the powerful Ethiopian Kingdom of Aksum to the east. By AD 350, King Ezana of Axum had captured and destroyed Meroe city, ending the kingdom’s independent existence, and conquering its territory into modern-day southern Egypt.

Christian Nubia in the three states period. Makuria would later absorb Nobatia. Note that the border between Alodia and Makuria is unclear, but it was somewhere between the 5th and 6th Cataracts.

By the sixth century, three states had emerged as the political and cultural heirs of the Meroitic kingdom. Nobatia in the north, had its capital at Faras, in what is now Egypt; the central kingdom, Muqurra, was centered at Dunqulah, the old city on the Nile about 150 kilometers south of modern Dunqulah; and Alwa, in the heartland of old Meroe in the south, had its capital at Sawba. In all three kingdoms, warrior aristocracies ruled Meroitic populations from royal courts where functionaries bore Greek titles in emulation of the Byzantine court.

The earliest references to Nubia’s successor kingdoms are contained in accounts by Greek and Coptic authors of the conversion of Nubian kings to Christianity in the sixth century. According to tradition, a missionary sent by Byzantine empress Theodora arrived in Nobatia and started preaching the gospel about 540. It is possible that the conversion process began earlier, however, under the aegis of Coptic missionaries from Egypt. The Nubian kings accepted the Monophysite Christianity practiced in Egypt and acknowledged the spiritual authority of the Coptic patriarch of Alexandria over the Nubian church. A hierarchy of bishops named by the Coptic patriarch and consecrated in Egypt directed the church’s activities and wielded considerable secular power. The church sanctioned a sacerdotal kingship, confirming the royal line’s legitimacy. In turn the monarch protected the church’s interests. The queen mother’s role in the succession process paralleled that of Meroe’s matriarchal tradition. Because women transmitted the right to succession, a renowned warrior not of royal birth might be nominated to

become king through marriage to a woman in line of succession.

The emergence of Christianity reopened channels to Mediterranean civilization and renewed Nubia’s cultural and ideological ties to Egypt. The church encouraged literacy in Nubia through its Egyptian-trained clergy and in its monastic and cathedral schools. The use of Greek in liturgy eventually gave way to the Nubian language, which was written using an indigenous alphabet that combined elements of the old Meroitic and Coptic scripts. Coptic, however, often appeared in ecclesiastical and secular circles. Additionally, early inscriptions have indicated a continuing knowledge of colloquial Greek in Nubia as late as the twelfth century. After the seventh century, Arabic gained importance in the Nubian kingdoms, especially as a medium for commerce.

The Christian Nubian kingdoms, which survived for many centuries, achieved their peak of prosperity and military power in the ninth and tenth centuries. However, Muslim Arab invaders, who in 640 had conquered Egypt, posed a threat to the Christian Nubian kingdoms. Nobatia and Muqurra merged into the kingdom of Dunqulah sometime before 700. Although the Arabs soon abandoned attempts to reduce Nubia by force, Muslim domination of Egypt often made it difficult to communicate with the Coptic patriarch or to obtain Egyptian-trained clergy. As a result, the Nubian church became isolated from the rest of the Christian world.

The coming of Islam

Main article: Islamization of Sudan

Islam came to Egypt in the 640s, and pressed southward; around 651 the governor of Egypt raided as far south as Dongola. The Muslims or the Arabs met with stiff resistance and found little wealth worth capturing. They thus ceased their offensive and a treaty known as the baqt was signed between the Arabs and Makuria. This treaty held for some seven hundred years. The area between the Nile and the Red Sea was a source of gold and emeralds, and Arab miners gradually moved in. Around the 970s an Arabic envoy Ibn Sulaym went to Dongola and wrote an account afterwards; it is now our most important source for this period.

Despite the baqt northern Sudan became steadily Islamicized and Arabized; Makuria collapsed in the fourteenth century with Alodia disappearing somewhat later.

Far less is known about the history of southern Sudan. It seems as though it was home to a variety of semi-nomadic tribes. In the 16th century one of these tribes, known as the Funj, moved north and united Nubia forming the Kingdom of Sennar. The Funj sultans quickly converted to Islam and that religion steadily became more entrenched. At the same time, the Darfur Sultanate arose in the west.

Between them, the Taqali established a state in the Nuba Hills.

Turkish Sudan

Main article: History of Sudan (1821–1885)

In 1820–21, an Ottoman force conquered and unified the northern portion of the country. The new government was known as the Turkiyah or Turkish regime. They were looking to open new markets and sources of natural resources. Historically, the pestilential swamps of the Sudd discouraged expansion into the deeper south of the country.

Although Egypt claimed all of the present Sudan during most of the 19th century, and established a province Equatoria in southern Sudan to further this aim, it was unable to establish effective control over the area. In the later years of the Turkiyah, the British missionaries traveled from what is now modern day Kenya in to the Sudd to convert the local tribes to Christianity.

South Sudan’s Kiir urges forgiveness for war

Jan 16 05:59 AM US/Eastern

AFP

South Sudanese president Salva Kiir urged his people on Sunday to “forgive” the north for a devastating 1983-2005 civil war, in his first public declaration since a landmark independence vote ended.

Speaking from the pulpit in the Saint Theresa Roman Catholic cathedral in regional capital Juba, Kiir said: “For our deceased brothers and sisters, particularly those who have fallen during the time of struggle, may God bless them with eternal peace.

“And may we, like Jesus Christ on the cross, forgive those who have forcefully caused their deaths.”

An estimated two million people died in the 22-year civil war, the latest round in five decades of conflict between the mainly Christian south and the mainly Arab, Muslim north that has blighted Africa’ s large

st nation.

A thousand-strong congregation turned out for Sunday mass at the cathedral to pray for their nation-in-waiting as results trickled in from the week-long independence vote which wrapped up on Saturday.

Voters opted overwhelmingly to create the world’s newest state, partial results posted outside polling stations in regional capital Juba showed after a count into the night.

There was no way of knowing how representative the results from the city’s larger polling stations were of the vote around Juba, let alone of south Sudan as a whole, in the landmark week-long referendum, which wrapped up on Saturday.

Much of the region is remote countryside where illiterate herders range over big distances with their livestock and the final result which will determine whether the south breaks away to become the world’s 193rd UN member state in July is not expected before next month.

But loudspeaker trucks criss-crossed the potholed dirt tracks of Juba urging south Sudanese to turn out en masse for a huge party to celebrate the south’s freedom from rule by the north.

Outside the polling station set up by the memorial to veteran rebel leader John Garang, policeman John Gadet read the partial results and proclaimed: “We have done it, we have won, we are free.”

The results posted for the station’s D section recorded 3,066 votes for secession to just 25 for continued union with the north.

Juba University polling station recorded 2,663 votes for independence to 69 for unity.

“Secession. Secession. Secession,” the polling station’s returning officer had repeatedly intoned into the night as he carefully unfolded each ballot paper cast before pronouncing the voter’s choice.

The count was conducted by torchlight, creating an almost religious atmosphere in the small classroom. There is no main electricity.

Each vote was passed for checking to two other polling station staff and shown to domestic and international observers. There were a dozen at Hay Malakal.

Many polling stations in rural areas where voting was conducted out in the open, locked away the ballotboxes for the night and started the count on Sunday.

Kiir, who led his people to the independence vote after Garang’s death shortly after the signing of the 2005 peace deal, sat smiling in a pew at the front holding a Bible.

The referendum commission’s chairman, Mohammed Ibrahim Khalil, an elder statesman who served as Sudanese foreign minister in the 1960s, hailed the “most peaceful” election he had ever seen in Sudan.

A senior official of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir’s National Congress Party said the north’s ruling party would accept the outcome of the vote even if it was for partition of Africa’s largest nation.

“The referendum took place in an atmosphere of calm… with a great degree of freedom and fairness,” Rabie Abdul Ati told AFP.

“It is very clear that the party will accept the result whether it be for unity or secession,” he said.

EU chief diplomat Catherine Ashton hailed “a historic event and a major milestone,” and said the bloc’s observers would give a preliminary assessment early next week.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon called on the “people and institutions of Sudan to exercise patience and restraint until the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission announces the final result.
