Matthew and Mark identify these three phenomena as being noticeable by a steady increase like a woman’ s birth pain

Both Matthew and Mark identify these three as “the beginning of sorrows. But while Luke also lists these three, he does not mention the beginning of sorrows. He does not label it as such because he adds two other bad phenomena, fearful sights and great signs, which were to mark the beginning of the great tribulation period of three and one-half years.

Luke 21:11,25 – And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. Natural disasters killed at least a quarter million people in 2010 — the deadliest year in more than a generation

This was the year the Earth struck back.

Earthquakes, heat waves, floods, volcanoes, super typhoons, blizzards, landslides and droughts killed at least a quarter million people in 2010 — the deadliest year in more than a generation. More people were killed worldwide by natural disasters this year than have been killed in terrorism attacks in the past 40 years combined.

“It just seemed like it was back-to-back and it came in waves,” said Craig Fugate, who heads the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency.

It handled a record number of disasters in 2010.

“The term ‘100-year event’ really lost its meaning this year.”

The January earthquake that killed well more than 220,000 people in Haiti is a perfect example. Port-au-Prince has nearly three times as many people — many of them living in poverty — and more poorly built shanties than it did 25 years ago.

So had the same quake hit in 1985 instead of 2010, total deaths would have probably been in the 80,000 range, said Richard Olson, director of disaster risk reduction at Florida International University.

In February, an earthquake that was more than 500 times stronger than the one that struck Haiti hit an area of Chile that was less populated, better constructed, and not as poor. Chile’s bigger quake caused fewer than 1,000 deaths.

Climate scientists say Earth’s climate also is changing thanks to man-made global warming, bringing extreme weather, such as heat waves and flooding.

In the summer, one weather system caused oppressive heat in Russia, while farther south it caused flooding in Pakistan that inundated 62,000 square miles, about the size of Wisconsin. That single heat-and-storm system killed almost 17,000 people, more people than all the worldwide airplane crashes in the past 15 years combined.

“It’s a form of suicide, isn’t it? We build houses that kill ourselves (in earthquakes). We build houses in flood zones that drown ourselves,” said Roger Bilham, a professor of geological sciences at the University of Colorado. “It’s our fault for not anticipating these things.

You know, this is the Earth doing its thing.”

That’s why the people who study disasters for a living say it would be wrong to chalk 2010 up to just another bad year.

Through Nov. 30, nearly 260,000 people died in natural disasters in 2010, compared to 15,000 in 2009, according to Swiss Re. The World Health Organization, which hasn’t updated its figures past Sept. 30, is just shy of 250,000. By comparison, deaths from terrorism from 1968 to 2009 were less than 115,000, according to reports by the U.S. State Department and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

In advance of the anniversary of the attempted Christmas Day bombing by Umar Farouq Abdulmutallab, online jihadists have increased their calls to emulate his attack, promising special “presents” to Western countries during the holiday season.

Shumukh Al-Islam jihadi forum member “ayman435” called upon fellow Muslims to “target churches during Christmas celebrations, meaning at a time when the churches are packed [with worshipers].” The member was referring to the churches in Egypt, where such attacks would come as a response to the increased sectarian tension between the Coptic Church and Muslims in Egypt.

The member provided a lengthy list of Coptic churches in Egypt and around the world, from the U.S. to Australia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the U.K., including their web addresses, physical address, and phone numbers, all for possible targeting.

“ayman435” then provided a link to a previous post on the same forum that includes step-by-step instructions for homemade bombs, in order to “make the attack [against the churches] a deadly and surprising [one].”

In a different post, “Qahir Al-CIA” (“Subjugator of the CIA”) threatens Western countries, the U.N. and NATO saying that the countdown for an attack has begun, and adding “You have chosen this war, so bear the consequences of your mistakes.”
The post included photos of Umar Farouq, a car bomb, and explosive packages; the author referred to them as Christmas “presents.”

Stabbing and feared abduction of American woman by Palestinians

Two Arab men, believed Palestinians, stabbed two women hiking near Moshav Matta not far from Beit Shemesh west of Jerusalem inside the Green Line Saturday, Dec. 19. One of them, an Israeli tour guide, reached a group of sightseers in serious condition from knife wounds with bound hands. She was taken to hospital after sounding the alarm that her companion, an American woman was missing.

She had seen her being dragged off by the two men before she escaped.

Her report placed police and IDF forces in the Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Mt. Hebr on districts

on a high alert.

Jerusalem police chief Aharon Franco reported that the police and Shin Bet are investigating the possibly that the missing woman is no longer in the region and using all their resources, including undercover informants, to discover her whereabouts and who the kidnappers are.

Meanwhile, exhaustive searches of the area, backed by helicopters using flares, are taking place to locate the missing woman amid fears for her life. They are scouring the Tzur Hadassa, Beirut Illit and Gush Etzion areas after setting up police roadblocks around Jerusalem. Saturday night, the section of Route 375 between Matta and Roglit Junction linking Tzur Hadassah to the Elah Valley was closed to traffic in both directions.

Military sniffer dogs were sent out overnight in search of the trail of the missing woman and her abductors.

Qaeda plans US, Europe attack: Interpol

Lyon: Interpol on Thursday said it had received information from its office in Baghdad about possible al Qaeda attacks on US and European targets.

“We received information yesterday (Wednesday) from the Interpol office in Baghdad about possible threats, especially in the US and Europe, due to orders given to al Qaeda cells by al Qaeda commanders,” the global police agency said.

All 188 countries which are members of the agency have been informed of the possible threats, said a spokeswoman at Interpol’s headquarters in the French city of Lyon.

Europe has been on high alert for several weeks over heightened fears of terrorist attacks in the run-up to the busy Christmas period.

On Saturday, Sweden’s first-ever suicide bombing narrowly missed Christmas shoppers.

The al Qaeda-linked website Shumukh al-Islam named the bomber as Taymour Abdelwahab, reportedly born in Iraq, who became a Swedish citizen in 1992 but was radicalised while attending a university in Britain.

He was carrying a cocktail of explosives and is believed to have detonated one charge prematurely on what officials said appeared to be a mission to kill as many people as possible on Stockholm’s busiest pedestrian thoroughfare.

Western security officials have warned that al Qaeda may be planning attacks in Europe similar to those that struck the Indian city of Mumbai in 2008.

The United States issued on October 03 a travel alert for its citizens travelling in Europe, citing the risk of potential terrorist attacks on transportation systems and tourist attractions.

Similar alerts were issued by Japan, Sweden, Britain and France.

A plot to blow up cargo planes was uncovered in late October after booby-trapped parcels were found at airports in Dubai and Britain.

US President Barack Obama said yesterday that surging troops into Afghanistan had made “significant progress” in curbing the Taliban and stifling al Qaeda, but warned more time was needed.

Obama said al Qaeda “is hunkered down” finding it harder to recruit, train and plot attacks.

But he warned: “It will take time to ultimately defeat al Qaeda and it remains a ruthless and resilient enemy bent on attacking our country.”

Eiland: Israel does not know how to defeat Hizbullah

Former national security adviser says Israel must make clear that a war with Hizbullah would “wreak destruction on Lebanon.”

Israel does not know how to defeat Hizbullah and would suffer heavy damage to its homefront in a head-to-head confrontation with the Shi’ite organization, a national security adviser to former prime ministers Ariel Sharon and Ehud Olmert was quoted as saying by Reuters on Thursday.

Maj.-Gen. (res.) Giora Eiland, who chaired Israel’s National Security Council from 2004 to 2006 and prior to that served as head of the IDF’s Operations Branch and its Planning Directorate, said that “a war waged only as Israel-versus-Hizbullah might yield better damage on Hizbullah, but Hizbullah would inflict far worse damage on the Israeli homefront than it did 4-1/2 years ago.” Eiland referred to the 2006 Second Lebanon War.

“Our only way of preventing the next war, and of winning if it happens anyway, is for it to be clear to everyone … that another war between us and Hizbullah will be a war between Israel and the state of Lebanon and will wreak destruction on the state of Lebanon,” Eiland stated. “And as no one — including Hizbullah, the Syrians or the Iranians — is interested in this, this is the best way of creating effective deterrence,” he added.

Earlier on Thursday, Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah said that recent warnings made by Israeli officials that Lebanon would be dealt a heavy blow if Hizbullah attacks Israel do not scare the Shi’ite organization and will not cause it to change its goals, reported Israel Radio.

During a speech to mark the Shi’ite Muslim Ashoura festival, Nasrallah said that gone are days in which Israel threatened or intimidated his organization. He added that Israel has been waging a psychological war that has failed, and that Hizbullah is better today than it was in the past.

Commenting on the international tribunal investigating the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri, Nasrallah again blamed Israel and the US for conspiring to divide, and stir tensions between, Shi’ites and Sunnis.

He stressed that Hizbullah rejects any attempt to blame it for Hariri’s murder and promised that the organization would defend its honor.

According to the French news agency AFP, Middle East envoy George Mitchell suggested that the U.S. hold separate but “parallel” talks with both sides for a period of six weeks.

A Palestinian source said Mitchell had proposed that the U.S. conduct bilateral talks with each side, rather than any direct peace negotiations.

“The aim is for the U.S. administration to form an idea of what the two parties want with a view to drawing up a strategy to relaunch direct negotiations at the time it deems appropriate,” the Palestinian official said. (Ha’aretz)

The Palestinians Are the Real Obstacle to Peace

Unfortunately, what stands between the Palestinians and eventual statehood is their insincerity when it comes to real peace. Israel has repeatedly proposed the independence that the Palestinians ostensibly desire.

But instead of concluding a deal with Israel, they have demonstrated a total unwillingness to compromise, often favoring terrorism.

Is it any wonder Israelis find it ever more difficult to trust the Palestinians

?

We do not yet have two states for two peoples because the Palestinians refuse to accept that there even exists a Jewish nation that lays legitimate claim to its land. They reject the entire premise of a state for the Jewish people – not only beyond the pre-1967 lines but even within the 1948 boundaries.

Israel remains committed to the cause of peace.

We have no desire to govern the affairs of another people. But our acceptance of a viable Palestinian state awaits a similar Palestinian acceptance of the rights of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel. Erekat, the Palestinian negotiator, recently wrote that such a step would require a modification of the Palestinian narrative. He’s absolutely right. Until this happens, there can be no chance for peace.

George Mitchell is back in the Middle East to resume his fruitless negotiating between Israel and the Palestinians.

Even without the burden of pushing Israel to freeze building before talks even begin, it’s not clear that there is any purpose to Mitchell’s visit other than a symbolic gesture of America’s continued interest in peace. The administration has already tried and failed with its sole idea for promoting peace: pressure on Israel. While Israel’s critics and foes are urging Obama to double down on such pressure, it appears that even the president and the secretary of state are finally beginning to understand that there is little point to investing any energy in such a process when they know that even if they gain more concessions from the Israelis, the Palestinians will always say no in the end anyway.

Occupied Jerusalem: Israel cannot defeat Hezbollah in a direct engagement and the Lebanese group would inflict heavy damage on the Israeli home front if war broke out, a former Israeli national security adviser said on Thursday.

Though outnumbered and outgunned, Hezbollah held off Israel’s advanced armed forces in a 2006 war and fired more than 4,000 rockets into Israeli territory.

The group has a domestic political base and has since bolstered an arsenal that Israel describes as a strategic threat.

Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah’s Iranian and Syrian backers have stoked expectations of renewed violence in Lebanon.

“Israel does not know how to beat Hezbollah,” said Giora Eiland, an army ex-general who served as national security adviser to former prime ministers Ariel Sharon and Ehud Olmert.

“Therefore a war waged only as Israel-versus-Hezbollah might yield better damage on Hezbollah, but Hezbollah would inflict far worse damage on the Israeli homefront than it did 4-1/2 years ago,” he told Israel Radio.

Echoing serving Israeli officials, Eiland said:

“Our only way of preventing the next war, and of winning if it happens anyway, is for it to be clear to everyone … that another war between us and Hezbollah will be a war between Israel and the state of Lebanon and will wreak destruction on the state of Lebanon.

“And as no one — including Hezbollah, the Syrians or the Iranians — is interested in this, this is the best way of creating effective deterrence.”

Except for a deadly August skirmish between Israeli forces and the regular Lebanese army, the border has been mostly quiet.

But Israelis have been watching for signs that Hezbollah, should it be named in an impending UN indictment over the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri, will push back by consolidating power in Beirut.

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak has argued that Hezbollah’s role in governing Lebanon would make the country fair game in any future war involving the Shiite militia.

Eiland said such a scenario would have “the entire world crying out for a ceasefire within two days”, which would be more in the Israeli interest “than having to deal directly with every one of (Hezbollah’s estimated) 40,000 rockets”.
