Kayhan: Iran Has Triumphed, and Has Overtaken the U.S. – Iran Is Now the Regional Power in the Middle East

In a September 19, 2010 editorial, the Iranian daily Kayhan, which is close to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, stated that the signs of Iran’s triumph in its strategic power struggle with the U.S. in the Middle East are clear. The paper enumerated Iran’s diplomatic achievements in the Iraq arena, noting the U.S. troop withdrawal; it also pointed out Iran’s accomplishments in Afghanistan and in its nuclear issue vis-à- vis the West.

The editorial stressed that Afghanistan has become an emergency for the Americans, and concluded that for this reason the U.S. will soon have to turn to Iran to ask for its help to resolve the crisis there.

It added that the U.S. has been completely unsuccessful in stopping Iran from becoming a nuclear threshold state, and that Tehran’s nuclear achievements mean that it will come to the negotiating table under circumstances that are more favorable to it. Iran, the paper noted, has already paid the price of sanctions; it added that now the West, not Tehran, must be the one to compromise.

The paper went on to say that because the U.S.’s needs in these arenas have become critical,

the Middle East geopolitical system will soon undergo a shift, and Iran will be recognized globally as the unassailable regional power in the Middle East.

This, the paper said, will have clear ramifications for Iran’s relations with the West.

The following are the main points of the article:

“The White House Must Ultimately Agree to the Option That Iran Supports For [Iraqi] Prime Minister [i.e. Al-Maliki]”

“… In the Middle E ast, the most import

ant arena of the conflict between Iran and the West, the outcome of this strategic struggle is beginning to emerge, after a period of uncertainty and waiting for a decision.

“In Iraq, the American strategy was based on creating a dead end in the political process, and on preventing [outgoing prime minister] Nouri Al-Maliki from becoming prime minister [again] at any cost. Nevertheless, it is now clear that the White House must ultimately agree to the option that Iran supports for prime minister [that is, Al-Maliki].

“The difference [now] is that during this past year, Al-Maliki came to understand very well who his friends are and who his enemies are… What apparently will hasten the process [of his appointment as prime minister] is the exit of most U.S. Army battle units from Iraq – which will have a serious impact on [the U.S.’s] bargaining power in the matter of the political balance within Iraq.”

“America Has So Far Refrained From Officially Asking Iran For Help [in Afghanistan]… [Due To] Its Desire Not To Give the Impression That It Had Removed the Iranian Nuclear Issue From the Top Of Its Agenda”

“In Afghanistan, the Americans have for some time been emphasizing that they agree that the only strategy that will work will be a regional one – one that will set Iran at its center – in order to resolve the chaos there.

At the same time, the reason that America has so far refrained from officially asking Iran for help [in Afghanistan] was its desire not to give the impression that it had removed the Iranian nuclear issue from the top of its agenda.

“[Recently, it seems] that the Americans are gradually beginning to recognize that they are being forced to move towards Iran, and to begin to ask it for help. This will happen soon. The move [towards Iran] stems more than anything else, apparently, from the Americans’ understanding that the Afghanistan issue is too much of an emergency to be considered marginal [any longer] in the negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue.”

“Iran Is the Premier Regional Power” In the Middle East

“The question of how Iran will respond to such a request is not the subject of this article; however, it is clear that the U.S.’s needs have become critical.

This will soon cause a shift in the Middle East’s geopolitical system – such that the U.S. will understand all too well that [despite] the 2009 events [in Iran following the presidential election], Iran is the premier regional power [in the Middle East], and nothing has changed in this matter.”

On the Nuclear Issue, “Iran Has Already Paid the Price of Enrichment [To 20%]… Now It Is the West’s Turn To Find a Way To Arrive At An Understanding In This Area”

“The third arena to examine in order to complete this picture is the Iranian nuclear issue. In the past 18 months [i.e. since U.S. President Barack Obama’s election], the Americans have assumed that the only path to bring Iran back from [becoming] a [nuclear] threshold state is to empty its storehouses of nuclear material. This is because the two other components of [becoming] a threshold [state] – that is, knowledge and equipment – are impossible to restrict in any way; therefore, they focused on this project. During this time, and despite the serpentine diplomatic and intelligence ups and downs, this goal has not been accomplished, and Iran has made highly significant strides in producing nuclear material and in its enrichment skills – [strides] that even Iran itself did not anticipate.

“Iran is now increasing the quantity of low-level enriched material at Natanz, according to plan; it is now examining more advanced technology for centrifuges.

More importantly under the current conditions, Iran has fully mastered techniques to enrich [uranium] to 20%, and this is of great strategic value.

“Of course, as has already been announced officially, Iran does not intend to bring its entire stock of low-level enriched material to 20% enrichment. However, its solution of the engineering and technical problems involved in enriching to 20%, and the fact that it has already stockpiled 20 kg of such material, will cause serious difficulties for the West in any sort of future negotiations.

“Iran has already paid the price of enrichment [to 20%] in advance, in the consequences related to [U.N. Security Council] Resolution 1929 and unilateral sanctions. Now it is the West’s turn to find a way to arrive at an understanding in this area.

“Apparently, due to these difficulties, the West cannot reach a decision vis-à-vis the Vienna talks, and always emphasizes that the nuclear negotiations must be held with the group of six [i.e. the 5+1]. This is because they know that as far as Iran is concerned, this issue has been resolved [i.e. the matter is closed].”

“If the U.S. Adds Up the Iran Strategy… It Will Arrive At a Final Assessment: Iran Has Overtaken It”

“The sum total of these issues – that is, [of Iran’s] internal assessments, as well as regional and nuclear assessments – clearly shows that despite all the Americans’ efforts and plots in the past year, Iran’s national security has improved… [This] will have ramifications for the future, and from now on the West will be forced to face Iran empty-handed [that is, with nothing to offer].

“If the U.S. adds up the Iran strategy [that it has implemented] for the past two years, it will arrive at a final assessment: Iran has overtaken it. Besides the question of its next move [i.e. the U.S.’s decision regarding contacts with Iran], this assessment [i.e. that Iran is the premier superpower in the region] will have ramifications that cannot be ignored in future relations between Iran and the West.”

Paris on high alert for terror attacks

The high level of preparedness for terrorist attack – “reinforced red” – maintained in France since Sept. 16 was quietly expanded this week to most of the big international air hubs of Europe, including London’s Heathrow, Amsterdam’s Schiphol andairports in Moscow, Berlin and Rome.

Security measures were also redoubled at the important railways and subway st

ations of Europe.

The commander of French police and security services Frederic Pechenard went on the air Wednesday Sept 22 with a statement for the public: “I’m not here to frighten people,” he said, “but we have serious evidence coming in from reliable intelligence sources telling us that there is a risk of a major attack.” He declined to say whether the alert level had been raised from “reinforced red” to “reinforced scarlet.” He said the danger could come in the form of “the assassination of an important figure or an attempted mass casualty attack on a crowded public area like a metro train or department store.”

DEBKAfile Ltd. S counter-terror sources report that the reliable sources Pechenard referred to were aside from French intelligence, also , the Algerian intelligence DGDS, Algerian military intelligence, the Moroccan DST and the United States AFRICOM which coordinates the war on Al Qaeda in the Horn of Africa and the Sahara.

They reported that Al Qaeda in North Africa, AQIM, had assigned to Europe and France in particular a number of Algerian jihadist women trained to carry out suicide bombings on trains, at railway stations and at major rail junctions.

A single bomber aboard one of the Eurorail multi-country links could wreak havoc along the entire line.

This is why on Wednesday, September 22, it was announced in Paris that one of the main prospective targets for the planned suicide bombings is Gare du Nord, the station from which trains depart for London, Belgium, Switzerland and Italy.

Our counterterrorism sources say security measures have also been massively stepped up at St.

Pancras International Train Station in central London, the hub of four mainline services, the East Midlands trains, the First Capital Connect, the Southeastern and the Eurostar connecting London to Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and major cities in Germany.

Western terrorism experts find two reasons why the AQIM is raring to go into action at this time:

1. A Qaeda has in recent weeks gained an infusion of Arab fighters who decided to pull out of Afghanistan and Pakistan in light of the rumors about secret negotiations between the US and the Taliban to end the war in Afghanistan and make separate arrangements for Al Qaeda.

They want no part of such arrangements and, even more, of being stranded in Afghanistan or Pakistan for a long period at the service of Taliban with no exit route.

Upon arrival in North Africa, these jihadists were keen on going into operation against Western targets without delay to prove that no one can stop al Qaeda.

2. France and AQIM have ramped up their secret war in such countries as Algeria, Mauritania, Mali, Niger and the Sahara regions bordering them.

It entails al Qaeda’s abduction of Westerners, many of them French but also Britons and Spaniards, in exchange for million-dollar ransoms, countered by French raids.

On July 22, at least seven terrorists were killed in a combined French-Mauritanian raid by special forces in northern Mali to free the 78-year-old French hostage Michel Germaneau.

Al Qaeda exacted its revenge by executing the hostage. This week, they kidnapped seven nuclear technicians, including five French nationals, who had been working in the uranium mines of Niger.

The French defense minister responded by dispatching air units to Niger composed of surveillance and combat jets and a unit of special forces with orders to find the hostages and rescue them.

DEBKAfile’s counterterrorism sources point to the difficulty of differentiating between abductions conducting in the service of Islamist terror and kidnaps for raising cash to keep those networks afloat and operating.

Many of the network leaders are smugglers or criminals preying on the countries bordering the Sahara who do not belong to al Qaeda but bow to the authority of AQIM leaders 2,000 miles away in Algeria’s mountainous regions.

All the same, Al Qaeda in the Maghreb is affected sufficiently by its conflict with France and fresh influx of jihadists to mount ambitious operations on French soil and target the rest of western Europe.

Taken literally or strictly, theocracy means rule by God and refers primarily to an internal “rule of the heart”, especially in its biblical application. In a pure theocracy, the civil leader is believed to have a direct personal connection with God. For example, a prophet like Moses led the Israelites, and the prophet Muhammad ruled the early Muslims.

Law proclaimed by the ruler is also considered a divine revelation, and hence the law of God.

In the Theocracy of God Government with Jesus as God, the Prince of the kings of the earth, the Son of David, the chain of command will come from him to the priests and kings of Revelation 1:4-8.

Op-ed: Israeli democracy’s demise may be closer than we think as Shas power grows

The people of Israel are apparently unaware of what lies in store.

Time after time, they receive reminders and warnings, yet they keep on dozing off comfortably. And I’m not referring to the Iranian threat here; the Iranians are treating us decently while openly declaring their intentions, so we can prepare accordingly.

I’m referring to the dramatic change in the ideological balance of power within the State of Israel, a country that is turning from a democracy into a theocracy.

Sounds groundless? Keep this article tucked away and read it 10 years from now. I’d be happy to eat my hat.

Israel’s political-religious map shows new trends. The national-religious public has disintegrated and its effect on developments is minor. The Ashkenazi haredi public clings to the old ideology, seeking maximal state funds and minimal interference in national affairs. Against this backdrop, we would do well to pay attenti on to what goes

on within the Shas movement.

At this time, the Shas movement is in the process of completing its build-up and acquisition of political clout. Now it no longer makes do with activity that aims to benefit its constituency. While Ashkenazi haredi parties mostly care about budgets, IDF service exemptions, and other communal bonuses and maintain a low profile on matters that to not pertain to their internal affairs, Shas aims much higher.

Beyond the standard declarations about the “gay disease,” for example, Shas is also involved in more global affairs. “We must bomb thousands of homes in Gaza; ruin Gaza,” a Shas minister said during Operation Cast Lead. He based his stance on the “Torah view.” Meanwhile, Eli Yishai forced Israelis to adopt Standard Time in the midst of summer. He also called for the dismissal of a news anchor because of a critical comment made on Twitter.

Eli Yishai also happens to be our deputy prime minister. His party currently occupies a rather promising position ahead of a leap to the Prime Minister’s Office.

Growing religious fundamentalism

Now, Eli Yishai is about to paralyze the Interior Ministry’s website on Shabbat, preventing payments from being made through the site on that day. This seemingly minor issue is of great concern to me.

First, I should note that I do not make payments through the website on Shabbat. Yet I’m also aware that it’s none of my business what my neighbor does in his own home. After all, this is not a situation where service providers are forced to work on Shabbat. Hence, I cannot find a logical explanation for preventing an act that only involves computers and seculars. After all, nobody makes payments on this website using giant public screens. So what’s the proble

m?

It appears that similarly to other places worldwide, we are witnessing growing religious fundamentalism. These developments show that we are close to embarking on the process currently taking shape in Turkey: A religious takeover of democratic state institutions.

Most Shas supporters don’t care about the fact that democratic state institutions protect them from a party whose existence depends on exploiting them.

Most of these Shas fans would not be able to last in the corrupt Shas state for even 15 minutes. After all, their movement’s role is to keep them as ignorant and poor as possible, so that they continue to support it. For the time being, they consume their hatred for state institutions (such as the High Court of Justice) and needlessly provoke the secular public.

We may be enjoying the final years of Israeli democracy.

I’m skeptical whether 10 years from now, such articles would even be allowed. Eli Yishai is growing stronger, while the fans of democracy are growing weaker. You may say that I’m getting carried away, and that no such things are possible among the Jews. Maybe I’m paranoid. Yet history teaches us that being Jewish doesn’t mean we won’t be crucified.

Israel, along with most of the world, has become so confident its IDF and IAF will be able to defeat Arabs as they did in the 1948 War of Independence, the 1967 War, and the 1973 War, it seems to be madness that Israelis will be driven into the Negev Wilderness.

It seems even stranger to believe they will be left there surrounded for three and one-half years and then be delivered by their Messiah when he returns on his Second Advent, the same Messiah they rejected on his First Advent. To believe some four million Israelis will perish in this conflict is staggering, and that their Messiah will deliver them primarily by the greatest geological shaking of the entire world has known since God made Adam is insanity to unbelievers, and even to many of those who believe. Even in the face of all I have just stated, I am certain it will happen according to the Word of God. And, even though I cannot be certain, I do guesstimate this war is very likely to begin prior to 2015.

Op-ed: Blow suffered in Yom Kippur War reminder that Mideast’s strongest army isn’t omnipotent

The statistics published ahead of Rosh Hashana about Israel’s current state, the number of citizens, birthrates, economic growth and so on did not highlight the figure that interests me more than anything else: How many of this country’s residents experienced the Yom Kippur War, 37 years ago?

The answer: Fewer than half; much fewer. They weren’t born then, or were too young, or lived abroad. The fact is that only one or two of our current generals took part in that war. For the o

thers, the Yom Kippur War is about lectures or gossip they heard about the wars of the generals during that war.

And we say: Only those who were here at the time would be able to understand us. It’s not about people changing their political views in the wake of that war.

The opposite is true: Many views were reinforced. Those who fought for a deep geographical barrier argued, and rightfully so, that “we told you so!” Imagine what would have happened to us had the Sinai desert not serve as a barrier between Israel and Egypt? Meanwhile, those who believed that war isn’t the solution and that we must pay for peace also reinforced their views: Why and for what did 2,650 people pay with their lives? (In retrospect, that war ultimately led to a peace treaty.)

Israelis who weren’t here at the time live under the illusion that Operation Defensive Shield or the Second Lebanon War or Operation Cast Lead were all wars. Well, they weren’t even the prelude to the introduction of a war.

Only those whose breath froze upon hearing that siren in the midst of Yom Kippur and didn’t understand what was going on know what it’s like.

Only those who heard Max Maman’s horrific cries for help from the besieged Suez Canal outpost, only those who received the fatality lists (hundreds a day,) only those who saw the mess on the road leading to Sinai, the helplessness of the commanders, the curses and wars of the generals, only those who flew from Sinai aboard a Dakota with dying soldiers whispering for help know that we indeed were – and still are – the Middle East’s most powerful army, but th

at even the strongest army can sustain a difficult blow when war comes.

Only those who saw the turned over tanks on the Golan Heights and the bristles of the red-eyed soldiers know that the Mideast’s strongest army can turn defeat into victory.

Those who weren’t here back then, who were not overcome by anxiety, which turned into concern and then into the fatigued smile of achievement can babble about how we’ll “pulverize our enemies.” At 2 am on that Yom Kippur, all the chatterboxes grew silent. Yet 37 years are apparently enough time to raise a new generation of arrogant people.

An in-depth study published this year by Bar-Ilan University’s Begin-Sadat Center determined that an Israeli strike in Iran would prompt Tehran to embark on an endless war, even if it will last years, against Israel until the Jewish State is eliminated. Some say the study’s findings are exaggerated and even baseless, yet those whose job it is to assess these matters must not under any circumstances assume that we’re omnipotent.

We are not. Those who were there during the Yom Kippur War know that this war was not just about the raising of the Israeli flag on the Mount Hermon outpost, but also about the “help, they’re butchering me!” cries uttered by Jerusalemite bank clerk Max Maman, may he rest in peace.

We should not be envious of those who take part in security consultations, and we should certainly not be envious of those who must take the decisions. We just wanted to share with you the answer of an admired general, God’s deputy during those days. “What was your mistake?” We asked Shmuel Gorodish-Gonen, the IDF’s Southern Command chief at the time.

He replied in a tired, broken voice: “I thought it would be the seventh day of the Six-Day war.” Thousands paid with their lives for this line of thought.
