Ash Clears Over Europe; Airports Operate Normally

BRUSSELS (AP) — A band of volcanic ash was drifting in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean Monday and adding hours to flights from North America to Europe as planes diverted around it.

Flights across Europe were operating normally after the dispersal of another plume of volcanic ash that disrupted air traffic and forced some airport closures over the weekend, aviation officials said.

Airlines pushed authorities for an official determination on when airlines could fly though areas of light contamination. Most of the clouds over Europe have contained such light concentrations of ash.

Air traffic charts showed that airliners on both the westward and eastward tracks across the Atlantic were being diverted far to the north, over Greenland, to avoid the danger zone around the Icelandic volcano whose eruptions forced a five-day suspension of air traffic in Europe last month.

The resulting travel chaos saw the cancellation of more than 100,000 flights — stranding passengers around the world and causing airlines direct losses of more than euro1 billion ($1.3 billion).

The Association of European Airlines said the losses caused by this weekend’s disruptions, which affected less than 2 percent of scheduled flights, were likely to be negligible.

”In terms of airspace closures, there were bits and pieces here and there, but these were relatively short term,” said David Henderson, a spokesman for the group.

”Trans-Atlantic traffic has also not been severely disrupted, but there has been lengthy re-routings which affected fuel burn, and also led to knock-on disruptions and delays,” he said. ”Those are the kind of losses that it will be much harder to put figures to.”

Air France KLM reported a 15.9 percent slump in traffic in April because of airport closures brought about by the ash. The disruptions cost Air France KLM euro35 million ($46 million) per day in operating income for all suspended operations, the company said Monday.

Air France KLM said the affect on cargo traffic was minimal, with a drop of just 2 percent in April, since most goods were stocked until flights resumed.

Lufthansa pointed out that international aviation authorities have yet to fix a safe level of ash contamination.

”We’re not thinking what to do if there are other events like this, because we don’t have a crystal ball to see into the future,” said Wencke Lenes, a spokeswoman for the airline. ”We’re focused on trying to get the authorities to determine a safe level of ash, so that there are no more unnecessary closures of airports and airspace.”

Eurocontrol said all airports in Europe were operating normally Monday, including those in Spain.

Up to 20 Spanish airports, including international hub Barcelona, had closed over the weekend.

Lisbon airport also reopened after being forced to close Sunday.

But Eurocontrol warned that a finger of oceanic ash was still threatening parts of the Iberian peninsula.

”During the afternoon, areas of higher ash concentration are predicted to move in a northeasterly direction from Portuguese airspace towards the center of Spain with the potential of airport closures during the afternoon and evening,” spokeswoman Kyla Evans said.

Eurocontrol says it expects approximately 28,500 flights to take place within Europe — slightly below the average for this time of year.

Revelation 6:14- And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

In Birth Pang Number 4 we went into specific detail as to the meaning of “and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.” I am convinced this Scripture, along with “and every island fled away, and the mountains were not found,” means that the tectonic plates, shown in figure 3, will shift sufficiently to change the latitudinal and longitudinal mini-second coordinates of every island and mountain on the face of the earth. This will produce wave after wave of unbelievable earthquake activity rippling through the horizontal and vertical structure of the earth. At the same time this fantastic earthquake scenario is occurring, the heaven will depart “as a scroll when it is rolled together.” The shifting of the plates produces both phenomena: earthquakes by an unlocking of pent-up pressures along plate boundaries, and a departure of the heavenly view by smoke from volcanic eruptions along the same moving boundaries.

I am convinced that the shifting of the plates will generate the formation of chains of volcanic eruptions, pictured in figure 10, along all the boundaries shown in figure 3. God, who made everything I have described to the point, has also created, around the entire earth, a great temperature inversion shroud in the lower section of the stratosphere, just above the tropopause. Any time there is a moderate to severe vertical volcanic eruption, smoke is forcefully injected through the tropopause, and then trapped beneath the temperature inversion of the stratosphere.

There is virtually no moisture above the tropopause and, since the smoke particles cannot be made heavy enough to fall earthward by condensation of water vapor on them, the smoke remains suspended in the lower section of the stratosphere for five to fifteen years. The winds in the lower section of the stratosphere spread the volcanic smoke around the entire envelope of atmosphere that surrounds the earth over a two to four year period.

Figure 11 portrays the great temperature inversion that exists through the stratosphere around the entire earth. As the smoke attempts to rise through this inversion it soon reaches a temperature near its own, and then begins to flatten out into a great shield of smoke, a shield that is then carried by upper level winds to produce an earth encompassing cloud throughout the lower stratosphere.

Have you ever really looked at all the Old and New Testament prophecies that describe the appearance of the heavenly bodies during the last three and one-half years of the Tribulation Period? Let us now consider just a few of them, to see if we can correlate them with the increasing severity from start to finish.

Revelation 8:12 – And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

Joel 2:30,31 – And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. [31] The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come.

Revelation 6:12 – And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

Joel 2:10 – The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:

Matthew 24:29 – Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

How can this be? One prophet says you will not be able to see the sun, moon, and stars about one-third of the time, but another says you won’t be able to see them at all. These prophecies are fulfilled gradually over the last three and one-half years of the Tribulation Period, and the prophets have been given visions of the effects on the view of the heavenly bodies from the earth, at different times, during this period. Let us assume that the last three and on-half years of the Tribulation Period have begun, and a person is standing at point “X” on figure 12. This person could look up and see the sun, moon, or stars from this vantage point on the earth’s surface without obstruction. Now, let’s allow figure 12 to become alive, with the winds of the stratosphere moving the volcanic smoke clouds around the earth in patches. Within a few hours after you had made your unobstructed observation of the sun, moon, or stars, the thin leading edge of the volcanic cloud would begin to move between you and the heavenly bodies. If it were night, the moon would turn blood red.

If it were day, the sun would be darkened. Within an hour or so the thicker part of the volcanic smoke shield would move over you, and the sun, moon, or stars would completely disappear from view. After a few more hours the back side of the cloud would move past, and you would once again be enjoying a clear space between volcanic cloud patches, such that the sun, moon, or stars would again be visible. This scenario would be repeated over and over again during the last three and one-half years of the Tribulation Period, but on a gradually worsening trend. You would not be able to see the sun, moon, or stars about one-third of the time – at times the moon would be blood red and the sun black as sackcloth of hair – and sometimes you could not see any of the heavenly bodies. All of this is exactly what the Old and New Testament prophets observed in their visions. These are a part of the “signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars” prophesied by Luke.

At this point it may seem I have been sidetracked from explaining “and the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together,” but everything up to this point has been for that very purpose. In Revelation 6:14, the word used for heaven is “ouranos,” and there are three of them: (1) The heaven where God dwells, (2) The heaven that makes up our atmosphere, and (3) The heaven were the sun, moon, stars, and other heavenly bodies dwell, that is, the universe. It is the latter to which John refers. The word used for departed is “apechoristhe,” which, in this case, simply means “was removed from view.” John is saying he saw what the Hebrews considered heaven (sun, moon, and stars) removed from his view. When something or someone departs, or is removed, it is no longer visible to the one from which it departed. John says that the heaven disappeared from his view, and then tells us the manner in which it disappeared: “as a scroll when it is rolled together.”

In figure 13 you can see the likeness of a Hebrew scroll. If while you were reading the scroll it was slowly rolled together, then it could be truly stated that the writing departed from your view, “as a scroll when it is rolled together.” In his vision John looked up into what the Hebrews considered one of the heavens and, as he watched, the heavenly bodies slowly disappeared over a period of time. This is exactly what will occur during the period of time we identify as the last three and one-half years of the Tribulation Period. It will occur like the slow rolling together of a scroll, such that by the end of the Tribulation Period a continuous cloud band of smoke will completely engulf the earth in the lower section of the stratosphere. No one will be able to see the sun, moon, or stars through the thick shroud at the Battle of Armageddon. It is through the great stratospheric cloud shown in figure 14 that the author believes the Lord shall return at the end of the Tribulation Period.

Column One: Time to plan for war

The repeated abdication of responsibility by the Obama administration from preventing nuclear non-proliferation leaves it on Israel’s shoulders.

So much for US President Barack Obama’s famed powers of persuasion. At the UN’s Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference that opened this week, the Obama administration managed to lose control over the agenda before the conference even started.

Obama administration officials said they intended to use the conference as a platform to mount international pressure on Iran to stop its illicit nuclear proliferation activities. But even before the conference began, with a little prodding from Egypt, the administration agreed that instead of focusing on Iran, the conference would adopt Iran’s chosen agenda: attacking Israel for its alleged nuclear arsenal.

Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that US officials were conducting negotiations with Egypt about Egypt’s demand that the NPT review conference call for sanctions against Israel for refusing to join the NPT as a non-nuclear state. The Journal quoted a senior administration official involved in the discussions saying, “We’ve made a proposal to them [Egypt] that goes beyond what the US has been willing to do before.”

Among other possibilities, that proposal may have included a US agreement to appoint a UN envoy responsible for organizing a UN conference calling for the greater Middle East to become a nuclear-free zone. In diplomatese, “Middle East nuclear-free zone” is a well-accepted euphemism for stripping Israel of its purported nuclear capability while turning a blind eye to Iranian, Syrian and other Islamic nuclear weapons programs. Egypt’s demand, which it convinced more than 100 members of the Non-Aligned Bloc to sign onto, is for Israel to open its nuclear installations to international inspectors as a first step towards unilateral nuclear disarmament.

On Wednesday, the US joined the other four permanent members of the Security Council in signing a statement calling for a nuclear-free Middle East and urging Israel, Pakistan and India to accede to the NPT as non-nuclear states. Following the US’s lead, on Thursday Yukiya Amano, the new director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, wrote a letter to IAEA member states asking for their suggestions for how to convince Israel to sign the NPT.

So as Iran – an NPT signatory – makes a mockery of the treaty by building nuclear weapons in contempt of its treaty obligations, the US has actively supported Iran’s bid to use the NPT review conference as yet another UN forum for bashing Israel.

It bears recalling that the primary goal of the NPT is to prevent nuclear proliferation.

From the amount of attention Israel is receiving at the NPT review conference, you could easily get the impression that Israel’s purported nuclear arsenal is the gravest proliferation threat in the world today. But history shows that this is nonsense.

Israel’s alleged nuclear arsenal, which it has reportedly fielded for four decades, has not led to a regional nuclear arms race. Notwithstanding their protestations to the contrary, Israel’s neighbors fully recognize that the purpose of Israel’s undeclared nuclear arsenal is to guarantee Israel’s survival, and consequently it only threatens those who would attack the Jewish state with the intention of annihilating it. This is why although it is four decades old, Israel’s undeclared nuclear arsenal has never caused a regional nuclear arms race. It has never harmed or called into question the relevance or usefulness of the NPT’s international non-proliferation agenda. Moreover, as a non-signatory to the NPT, Israel has the right to develop a nuclear program.

Iran on the other hand gave up that right when it joined the NPT regime. So, too, in sharp contrast to Israel’s alleged program, it is clear that Iran’s nuclear project is aggressive rather than defensive. Consequently, it is universally recognized that if Iran becomes a nuclear power, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and other states will begin developing their own nuclear arsenals in short order.

That is, it is absolutely clear that if the NPT is to have any relevance in the coming years, if there is to be any hope that counter-proliferation regimes can be useful, preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons must be its signatories’ chief aim.

But due to the Obama administration’s diplomatic fecklessness and ideological blinders, administration officials were incapable of making these points. And so, instead, through its actions, the administration has advanced the cause of nuclear proliferation. The US has now joined the ranks of fools who claim that nuclear weapons in the hands of states like the US and Israel are as problematic as nuclear weapons in the hands of states like Iran and North Korea.

BUT THEN, in the end it makes no difference that the US has followed Iran’ s lead at the NPT conference.

Even if the administration had managed to make Iran’s nuclear weapons program the focus of debate, it wouldn’t have mattered because diplomacy is no longer a relevant tool for preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power. Appeasement has failed. Sanctions are dead in the water in the Security Council.

And even if the Security Council passes a sanctions resolution, they will have no impact on Iran’s behavior. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made that much clear in his speech on Monday and in subsequent remarks to the media. As he put it, “While we do not welcome sanctions, we do not fear them either. Sanctions cannot stop the Iranian nation.”

What all of this demonstrates is that the diplomatic track – from appeasement to sanctions – is irrelevant for contending with Iran’s nuclear program. The only way to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear bombs is to use military force to destroy or severely damage its nuclear installations.

And this of course is something Obama will not do. His begging-to-shake-hands policy towards Iran and the one hand and his iron fist policy towards Israel on the other makes it absolutely clear that Obama will do nothing to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power. Rather than correct his abysmal failures, Obama seeks to hide them by minimizing the seriousness of the threat.

In remarks to the media this week, a White House official downplayed

the Iranian threat.

He told the Financial Times that Iran’s “nuclear clock has slowed down.

They are not making dramatic technical progress given the difficulties they are facing in their [uranium] enrichment program and the fact that their efforts to build secret facilities have been disclosed.”

The fact that the US’s published intelligence estimates of Iran’s nuclear program contradict this claim didn’t seem to faze the official.

THE US abdication of its responsibility as the leader of the free world to prevent the most dangerous regimes from acquiring the most dangerous weapons means that the responsibility for preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons has fallen on Israel’s shoulders. Only Israel has the means and the will to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power. And the message the NPT follies convey is that Israel must develop contingency plans for attacking Iran as quickly as possible.

Daily reports of weapons build-ups and military exercises in Iran and among Iran’s clients Syria, Hizbullah and Hamas expose the contours of their war plans.

Syria and Iran have armed Hizbullah with some 40,000 missiles and rockets, including hundreds of Scud missiles and guided surface-to-surface solid fuel M600 missiles with a 250 km. range. This week, Hizbullah threatened to attack Israel with non-conventional weapons. Syri a itself h

as a formidable chemical and biological arsenal as well as a massive artillery and missile force at its disposal.

As for Hamas, since Operation Cast Lead Iran’s Palestinian proxy Hamas has expanded its own missile arsenal. Today it reportedly has projectiles capable of reaching Tel Aviv and beyond.

As for Iran, as its seemingly endless military exercises make clear, the mullocracy has the capacity to use conventional weapons to imperil global oil shipments from the Persian Gulf. So, too, this week’s report that Osama bin Laden may have decamped to Iran in 2003 merely underlined Iran’s ability to utilize jihadist terror forces throughout the world.

From the open preparations for war that Iran and its clients have undertaken, it is clear that if they initiate the next round of fighting they will fight a four-front war against Israel. That war will be dominated by missile attacks against the entire country, aimed at breaking the will of the Israeli people while forcing the IDF to divert vital resources away from Israel’s primary target – Iran’s nuclear installations – to contend with Iran’s proxies’ missile stores.

As they consider Israel’s options going forward, Israel’s political and military leaders have to take two considerations into account. First, the side that initiates the conflict will be the side that controls the battle space. And second, there is a real possibility that the Obama admin

istration will refuse to resupply Israel with vital weapons systems in the course of the war.

The fact that Israel will be roundly condemned by the UN and its component parts is a certainty regardless of who initiates the conflict and therefore is irrelevant for operational planning.

Armed with these understandings, it is apparent that Israeli contingency plans for war must have limited goals and should be guided by the overarching aim of beginning and ending the war quickly. Luckily, Israel excels at limited, swift campaigns.

Responding to one of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s recent threats, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman promised last month that if Assad attacks Israel, Israel will bring down his regime. While bringing about the utter defeat of Iran’s regional proxies is a reasonable goal, it cannot be Israel’s goal in the coming war.

In the coming war, Israel will have only one goal: to destroy or seriously damage Iran’s nuclear installations. Every resource turned against Iran’s proxies must be aimed at facilitating that goal. That is, the only thing Israel should seek to accomplish in contending with Syria, Hizbullah and Hamas is to prevent them from diverting Israeli resources away from attacking Iran’s nuclear installations.

This means that Israel must launch a preemptive strike against Hizbullah’s missiles and missile launchers, Syria’s missiles, artillery and launchers, and Hamas’s missiles and launchers. As for their short-range rockets, Israel should do its best to intercept them and otherwise hunker down to weather the storm of Katyushas and Kassams. Life of the homefront won’t be easy. But it won’t be impossible either, as we saw in 2006.

Almost every assessment of a possible Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear installations has assumed that Israel will use its air force to strike. All that can be said of that analysis is that, just as there is more than one way to skin a cat, so there is more than one way to destroy Iran’s nuclear installations. An Israeli strike should utilize all of them to keep the Iranians off balance and on the defensive.

These are dangerous times. Iran, which seeks to position itself as a regional superpower, has been emboldened by the Obama administration’s abdication of US global leadership. Only Israel can prevent Iran from endangering the world. But time is of the essence.

There is no question in my mind that the events now transpiring in Russia, China, Europe, and the Middle East are definitely setting the stage for the final war of the Age of the Gentiles, which will eventually terminate with the Second Advent of Christ.

The prophecy of Ezekiel 38 is against a person and a land. The person is Gog, the Antichrist from that part of the once great Assyrian Empire, which extended itself to the immediate north of Israel. The two tribes of Meshech and Tubal occupied the two countries today known as Syria and Lebanon, and their descendants lived there at the time Micah and Isaiah wrote their prophecies. The land is the land of Magog, which is occupied by Russia today.

Ezekiel 38:1,2 – And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, [2] Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,

When Gog, the Antichrist, asks the land of Russia, some three and one-half years after he drives Israel into the Negev, to come down and help him completely destroy Israel, Russia will come down in massive array at Armageddon.

Revelation 16:16 – And he gat

hered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

At that time the following destruction of all the armies coming against Israel from Europe, Eurasia, China, Asia, the Far East, and Africa, will meet the following fate at the hand of God. At Armageddon no one will be able to rescue the Antichrist Gog, or any of those who attempt to help him, from the wrath of God that awaits them.

Daniel 11:45 to 12:1 – And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him. [12] And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

This scenario of Daniel 12:1 is also described in Ezekiel 38 and 39, as well as following Revelation 16:16.

Ezekiel 38:16 to 39:6 – And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes. [17] Thus saith the Lord God; Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by my servants the prophets of Israel, which prophesied in those days many years that I would bring thee against them

? [18] And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord God, that my fury shall come up in my face. [19] For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel; [20] So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground. [21] And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord God: every man’s sword shall be against his brother. [22] And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. [23] Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the Lord. [1] Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: [2] And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel: [3] And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand. [4] Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. [5] Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord God. [6] And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the Lord.

Please note the destruction that is rained down by God on the land of Magog (Russia) during all this destruction in verse six. The same event is described immediately following Revelation 16:16.

Revelation 16:16-21 – And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. [17] And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. [18] And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. [19] And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. [20] And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. [21] And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

The same event described in Daniel 11:45 to 12:1, Ezekiel 38:16 to 39:6, and Revelation 16:16 to 21, is also described in Mathew 24:21,22 and Revelation 19:11-21.

Matthew 24:21,22 – For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since

Russia’s Medvedev to make landmark visit to Syria

MOSCOW: President Dmitry Medvedev will travel to Syria on Monday to tighten ties with the Soviet-era ally on the first ever visit to the country by a Russian or Soviet head of state.

Accompanied by a large business delegation, Medvedev was set to meet President Bashar Assad and possibly oversee the signing of an economic agreement, a spokesman at

the Russian Embassy in Damascus told AFP.

“We are seeking to recover lost ground with old friends,” the spokesman said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

With Russia promoting itself as a major power in the Middle East, Medvedev will follow up the two-day Syria visit with a Turkey stopover for talks with Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

During the Cold War, Russia had a naval supply base in the Syrian port of Tartus on the Mediterranean but like with many other former allies, ties weakened after the 1991 disintegration of the Soviet Union.

Medvedev and Assad first met in August 2008, when the Russian president hosted his Syrian counterpart at his Black Sea summer residence in Sochi shortly after Russia’s war with Georgia. Assad said at that time he hoped to strengthen relations with Russia and that Moscow could again become a bulwark against the West and help resist Israeli influence in the Middle East.

ations and United States, Russia is a member of the international Quartet seeking peace in the Middle East and has long lobbied to host a Middle East peace conference.

Medvedev’s visit comes days after Washington renewed US sanctions on Syria for a year, accusing it and Iran of supporting “terrorist” groups.

Analysts say Moscow’s influence in the Middle East will in many ways depend on its relations with Syria, an increasingly important regional player with tight ties to Iran and the Lebanese group Hizbullah and Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, which has its political headquarters in Damascus.

Moscow has close ties with Hamas, while Western governments refuse to deal with it, calling it a terrorist group.

Analysts say sanctions against Iran and US pressure on Syria would most certainly be a major subject of talks between Medvedev and Assad.

“Russia will seek to reduce pressure around Syria,” said Alexander Shumilin, head of the Middle East Conflicts Analysis Center at Russia’s US and Canada Institute.

The visit, analysts add, will be a chance for Russia to thumb its nose at the United States.

“It will be one more excuse to demonstrate that we talk to whoever we want to talk,” said Alexei Malashenko, an analyst with the Carnegie Moscow Center.

Moscow has in recent time sought to restore Cold War-era ties and win new allies and Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have made trips across continents, in particular to South America.

The Russian Embassy spokesman said the energy minister Sergei Shmatko and officials from pipeline builder Stroytransgaz were set to accompany Medvedev on the visit.

The main event of the Russian-Turkish summit will be the first meeting of a new council for higher cooperation headed by Medvedev and Erdogan, the Kremlin said.

Russia is one of Turkey’s top trading partners and its main gas supplier, accounting for about 60 percent of the country’s gas imports.

Russia wants to build a section of its South Stream pipeline through Turkey’s portion of the Black Sea to create a new route for Russian gas to Europe that will by-pass Ukraine.

Nakba, the Arabic word for “catastrophe,” has entered the English language in reference to the Arab–Israeli conflict. As defined by the anti-Israel website The Electronic Intifada, Nakba means “the expulsion and dispossession of hundreds of thousands [of] Palestinians from their homes and land in 1948.”

Those who wish Israel to disappear actively promote the Nakba narrative. For example, Nakba Day serves as a mournful Palestinian counterpart to Israel’s Independence Day festivities, annually publicizing Israel’s alleged sins. So established has this day become that Ban Ki-moon, secretary general of the United Nations — the very institution that created the State of Israel — has sent his support to “the Palestinian people on Nakba Day.” Even Neve Shalom, a Jewish-Palestinian community in Israel claiming to be “engaged in educational work for peace, equality, and understanding between the two peoples,” dutifully commemorates Nakba Day.

The Nakba ideology presents Palestinians as victims without choices and therefore without responsibility for the ills that befell them. It blames Israel alone for the Palestinian-refugee problem. This view has an intuitive appeal, for Muslim and Christian Palestinians had long formed a majority on the land that became Israel, whereas most Jews were relative newcomers.

Intuitive sense, however, does not equal historical accuracy.

In his new tour de force, Palestine Betrayed, Efraim Karsh of the University

of London offers the latter.

With his customary in-depth archival research — in this case, relying on masses of recently declassified documents from the period of British rule and of the first Arab–Israeli war, 1917–49 — clear presentation, and meticulous historical sensibility, Karsh argues the opposite case: that Palestinians decided their own destiny and bear near-total responsibility for becoming refugees.

In Karsh’s words: “Far from being the hapless victims of a predatory Zionist assault, it was Palestinian Arab leaders who, from the early 1920s onward, and very much against the wishes of their own constituents, launched a relentless campaign to obliterate the Jewish national revival which culminated in the violent attempt to abort the U.N. partition resolution.” More broadly, he observes, “there was nothing inevitable about the Palestinian–Jewish confrontation, let alone the Arab–Israeli conflict.”

Yet more counterintuitively, Karsh shows that his understanding was the conventional, indeed the undisputed interpretation in the late 1940s. Only with the passage of time did “Palestinians and their Western supporters gradually rewr[i]te their national narrative,” thereby making Israel into the unique culprit, the one excoriated in the United Nations, university classrooms, and editorials.

Karsh successfully makes his case by establishing two main points: that (1) the Jewish-Zionist-Israeli side perpetually sought to find a compromise while the Palestinian-Arab-Muslim side rejected nearly all deals; and (2) Arab intransigence and violence caused the self-inflicted “catastrophe.”

The first point is more familiar, especially since the Oslo Accords of 1993, for it remains today’s pattern. Karsh demonstrates a consistency of Jewish goodwill and Arab rejectionism going back to the Balfour Declaration and persisting throughout the period of British rule. (To remind, the Balfour Declaration of 1917 expressed London’s intention to establish in Palestine a “national home for the Jewish people,” and the British conquest of Palestine just 37 days later gave it control of Palestine until 1948.)

In the first years after 1917, Arab reaction was muted, as leaders and masses alike recognized the benefits of the dynamic Zionist enterprise that helped revive a backward, poor, and sparsely populated Palestine.

Then emerged, with British facilitation, the noxious figure who would dominate Palestinian politics over the next three decades, Amin al-Husseini.

From about 1921 on, Karsh documents, Zionists and Palestinians had many choices to make; while the former invariably opted for compromise, the latter relentlessly decided on extermination.

In various capacities — mufti, head of Islamic and political organizations, Hitler ally, hero of the Arab masses — Husseini drove his constituents to what Karsh calls “a relentless collision course with the Zionist movement.” Hating Jews so maniacally that he went on to join the Nazi genocide machine, Husseini refused to accept their presence in any numbers in Palestine, much less any form of Zionist sovereignty.

From the early 1920s, then, one witnessed a pattern still in place and familiar today: Zionist accommodation, “painful concessions,” and constructive efforts to bridge differences, met by Palestinian anti-Semitism, rejectionism, and violence.

Complementing this binary dramatis personae, and complicating its stark contrast, stood the generally more accommodating Palestinian masses, the disgracefully anti-Semitic British mandatory authority, a Jordanian king eager to rule the Jews as subjects, feckless Arab state leaders, and an erratic American government.

Despite the radicalization of Palestinian opinion by the mufti and despite the Nazi rise to power, Zionists kept seeking an accommodation. It took some years, but the mufti’s zero-sum policy and eliminationism eventually convinced reluctant Labor leaders, including David Ben-Gurion, that good works would not facilitate their dream of acceptance.

Still, despite repeated failures, they continued the search for a moderate Arab partner with whom to strike a deal.

In contrast, Ze’ev Jabotinsky, the forerunner of today’s Likud party, already in 1923 understood that “there is not even the slightest hope of ever obtaining the agreement of the Arabs of the Land of Israel to ‘Palestine’ becoming a country with a Jewish majority.” Yet even he rejected the idea of expelling Arabs and insisted on their full enfranchisement in a future Jewish state.

This dialectic culminated in November 1947, when the United Nations passed a partition plan that nowadays would be termed a two-state solution.

In other words, it handed the Palestinians a state on a silver platter. Zionists rejoiced but Palestinian leaders, foremost the malign Husseini, sourly rejected any solution that endorsed Jewish autonomy. They insisted on everything and so got nothing. Had they accepted the U.N. plan, Palestine would be celebrating its 62nd anniversary this May.

And there would have been no Nakba.

The most original part of Palestine Betrayed is the half that contains a detailed review of the flight of Muslims and Christians from Palestine in the years 1947–49. Here Karsh’s archival research comes into its own, allowing him to present a uniquely rich picture of the specific circumstances of Arab flight. He goes one by one through the various Arab population centers — Qastel, Deir Yassin, Tiberias, Haifa, Jaffa, Jerusalem, Safad — and then takes a close look at the villages.

Israel’s war of independence divides into two parts. Ferocious fighting began within hours of the United Nations vote to partition Palestine on Nov. 29, 1947, and lasted till the eve of the British evacuation on May 14, 1948. The international conflict began on May 15 (the day after Israel came into being), when five Arab state armies invaded, with hostilities lasting until January 1949. The first phase consisted largely of guerrilla warfare, the second primarily of conventional warfare. Over half (between 300,000 and 340,000) of the 600,000 Arab refugees fled before the British evacuation, and most of them in the final month.

Palestinians fled in a wide range of circumstances and for varied reasons. Arab commanders ordered noncombatants out of the way of military maneuvers; or they threatened laggards with treatment as traitors if they stayed; or they demanded that villages be evacuated to improve their standing on the battlefield; or they promised a safe return in a matter of days. Some communities preferred to flee rather than to sign a truce with the Zionists; in the words of Jaffa’s mayor, “I do not mind destruction of Jaffa if we secure destruction of Tel Aviv.” The mufti’s agents attacked Jews to provoke hostilities. Families with the means to do so fled danger. When agricultural tenants heard that their landlords would be punished, they worried about being expelled and preempted by abandoning the land. Bitter internecine enmities hobbled planning.

Shortages of food and other necessities spread.

Services like water-pumping stations were abandoned. Fears spread of Arab gunmen, as did rumors of Zionist atrocities.

In only one case (Lydda) did Israeli troops push Arabs out. The singularity of this event bears emphasis.

Karsh explains about the entire first phase of fighting: “None of the 170,000–180,000 Arabs fleeing urban centers, and only a handful of the 130,000–160,000 villagers who left their homes, had been forced out by Jews.”

The Palestinian leadership disapproved of a population return, seeing this as implicitly recognizing the nascent State of Israel. The Israelis were at first ready to take back the evacuees but then hardened their position as the war progressed. Prime Minister Ben-Gurion explained their thinking, on June 16, 1948: “This will be a war of life and death and [the evacuees] must not be able to return to the abandoned places. . . . We did not start the war. They made the war.

Jaffa waged war on us, Haifa waged war on us, Beisan waged war on us. And I do not want them again to make war.”

In sum, Karsh explains, “it was the actions of the Arab leaders that condemned hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to exile.”

In this book, Karsh establishes two momentous facts: that Arabs aborted the Palestinian state and that they caused the Nakba. In the process, he confirms his status as the preeminent historian of the modern Middle East writing today, and extends the arguments of three of his earlier books. His magnum opus, Empires of the Sand: The Struggle for Mastery in the Middle East, 1789-1923 (with Inari Karsh, 1999), argued that Middle Easterners were not, as usually thought, “hapless victims of predatory imperial powers but active participants in the restructuring of their region,” a shift with v

ast political implications. Palestine Betrayed applies that book’s thesis to the Arab–Israeli conflict, depriving Palestinians of excuses and victimhood, showing that they actively, if mistakenly, chose their destiny.

In Fabricating Israeli History: The “New Historians” (1997), Karsh exposed the shoddy work, even the fraudulence, of the school of Israeli historians who blame the 1948–49 Palestinian refugee problem on the Jewish state. Palestine Betrayed offers the flip side; if the earlier book refuted mistakes, this one establishes truths. Finally, in Islamic Imperialism: A History (2006), he showed the expansionist core of the Islamic faith in action over the centuries; here he explores that drive in small-bore detail among the Palestinians, connecting the supremacist Islamic mentality with an unwillingness to make practical concessions to Jewish sovereignty.

Palestine Betrayed reframes today’s Arab–Israeli debate by putting it into its proper historical context. Proving that for 90 years the Palestinian political elite has opted to reject “the Jewish national revival and [insisted on] the need for its violent destruction,” Karsh correctly concludes that the conflict will end only when the Palestinians give up on their “genocidal hopes.”

With the passage of time the world will see more and more of the things I wrote about in my three books written in the seventies of the last century.

The last few years have seen a small array of chaotic events in the earth and the heavens. The really big prophesied outbreak of chaotic events is quite likely to suddenly begin at some point in time prior to 2015.

The chaotic event occurrences are certain, but the timing of them is not.

THE GREAT WINEPRESS OF GOD

Revelation 14:19,20 – And the angel thrust in his sickle into

the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.

[20] And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

This particular angel thrusts his sickle INTO the earth.

We are advised in verse 20 as to WHERE the sickle makes its earthly penetration; somewhere in Israel “outside the city,” which is the city of Jerusalem. The word used for winepress is “LENOS,” which means: “a trough dug in the earth, a ditch or canal, or anything shaped like a tub.” The winepresses with which John was familiar were rectangular in shape and made of, or dug out of, the rock of the earth. Blood-red wine was made from grapes. The ripe clusters were carried in baskets and thrown into the press. The winepress consisted of a shallow trough built above the ground, or excavated by chipping it out of limestone rocks in the earth. There were also village and household winepresses, but since the one to which John refers is one in a vineyard field, one made by chipping out a rectangular trough in limestone rock, I will limit my discourse to that type. One end of this type was made lower, such that the blood-red liquid from the grapes would flow into it, after being pressed out by the feet of humans in the shallow end. So both the upper and lower sections of the winepress presented a view of a blood-red trough in the crust of the earth.

John, in his vision, looks down upon the earth and, from this aerial view, recognized the city of Jerusalem, a city he had looked down upon many times from the Mount of Olives. He beheld “without” (outside) Jerusalem, to the east, the greatest winepress ever seen by human eyes. He saw a trough (lenos) in the earth 1600 furlongs (185 miles) in length. The opening of the earth caused by the angel’s sickle had caused blood (haima) to come up “out” (ek) of the winepress to a depth of about five feet (“unto the horse bridles”). The Greek word used for blood is haima, which can mean real blood, or any object taking on a blood red color, or any liquid that has a blood-red hue. The Hebrew word for blood is also used to describe a blood-red liquid rather than body blood, as we find stated in Genesis 49:11 – “Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass’s colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes:” The moon will not turn to real blood in the Tribulation Period, but it will take on a blood-red hue, as is described by the use of the word haima in Revelation 6:12 – “And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;” Before this Birth Pang is completed I will carefully pull together everything previously stated, and thereby put together a full exposition of Revelation 14:19,20. But for now I must take time to describe one of the most terrifying creations of God in the distant past: a flood-basalt plain.

In the distant past, six major rips in the crust of the earth have produced six great basaltic flood plains. These great cleavages of the earth’s crust occurred in zones along the dashed lines of Figure 3. They represent old magma extrusions associated with the initial stages of continental drift. Dr. W. Kenneth Hamblin, in his standard geological text, The Earth’s Dynamic Systems, states: “Where the rift system passes beneath a continent, the continental crust is split and great volumes of basalt are extruded and spread out over large areas of the continent. These great floods of lava fill the lowlands and depressions in the existing topography.” The rift system that passes beneath the continent from the Gulf of Aqabah northward through Israel is a prime candidate for the sudden creation of a raging flood basalt plain. The following quoted material, concerning flood basalt plains, was extracted from Volcano, volume 2 of A 1982 Time-Life series that examines the workings of the planet earth: “Flood basalts are generated atop the upper mantle.

When tension opens fissures in the crust, the fluid magma spurts directly to the surface. The sheer volume of it dwarfs all other volcanic activity: a week long flow can release 360 cubic miles of lava, 10 times the volume of Mount Rainier. Extremely fluid magma suddenly spurts to the surface through a line of hundred of offset dikes, each one as much as 15 miles long and fifty feet wide. The lava from such individual fissures, about five cubic miles per day, is so hot and runny that it speeds down the slightest slope at speeds up to 10 miles an hour, creating a lava sheet as much as 100 miles wide. Standard textbooks note “sooner or later they must recur.” This liquid rock can hit the surface at temperatures from 2300 to 2900 degrees Fahrenheit. This is double the temperature required to cremate a human body.

At these temperatures, the flesh would disappear from the body before it hit the ground, were it directly exposed to the initial air heat flash surge near the crack through which the magna extruded. All that would remain would be a human skeleton. At the same time that the Mount of Olives cleaves in its midst, and all the land in Israel from Geba to Rimmon is lifted up, what follows will happen to the antichrist’s army in the Jordan River Valley, as indicated in Zechariah 14:3-12.

Zechariah 14:12 – And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

At some point in time, near the end of

the Tribulation Period, the great rift valley of Israel will suddenly rip open from one end to the other. For a period of time after this ripping a vast flood basalt plain will be created along a 1600 furlough (185 mile) section of the valley. Looking down on it from he aven in his vision it looked like

a north-south winepress. It was east of Jerusalem, along the Jordan River Valley, as a long rectangular trough in the crust of the earth filled with blood. Tremendous tectonic changes will completely restructure the entire valley from the Gulf of Aqabah to Lebanon. The fissures will close abruptly at the end of the Tribulation Period from the southern end of the Dead Sea to Lebanon. However, limited volcanic activity will continue south of the Dead Sea, in what once was Idumea, throughout Christ’s Millennial Reign from “generation to generation,” according to Isaiah.

Isaiah 34:8-10 – For it is the day of the Lord’s vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion. [9] And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch. [10] It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever.

Now, considering John’s description of the great winepress in Revelation 14:19,20, in light of one of God’s fantastic creations in the earth, let us compare God’s linguistics with God’s science. What John saw looked like a great lenos (trough or ditch or canal) about 185 miles long. I call your attention to Figure 24, Part A, which is an excerpt from a 1970 diagram by Dr. Fruend showing both sides of the Dead Sea Rift.

The long dashed black lines that run north and south along both sides of the Dead Sea, from the Gulf of Aqabah through Israel, are great fissures in the crust of the earth. These fissures erratically weave down through the crust of the earth to eventually make contact with great undersea lakes of magma. Part A of Figure 24 gives a picture of these fissures as though you were looking down on them from a satellite, while Part B pictures the same fissures as though you were deep within the earth looking northward, and could see their downward progression into the earth. These fissures are where they should be to comply with the description by John. They are “without the city,” which is Jerusalem. And the word lenos does fit the characteristics of the Jordan River Valley, which is a great trough in the crust of the earth.

John saw haima come up out the lenos to cover an area some 185 miles long. John viewed a blood-red liquid (haima), which we call lava, spread across the great trough (lenos) to fill what we know as the Jordan River Valley. And the blood-red liquid filled the valley to a depth of about five feet (height of a horse bridle). Please note that, on Part A of Figure 24, a lone fissure veers off from the main trough, then extends northwest past the Tel of Armageddon, and finally goes on to Haifa, where it meets the Mediterranean Sea. If you measure northward from the northern tip of the Gulf of Aqabah to the point of departure by the fissure that extends to Haifa, you will discover it is 1600 furlongs, or 185 miles.

I believe this 185 mile section of the Jordan River trough is the great winepress that John saw filled with a blood-red fluid as he looked down upon the earth in his vision.

Please observe Figure 25. God, for some time, has brought an unbelievable tonnage of hot flowing rock upward into the Red Sea Fault. As this liquid rock makes contact with the water- cooled Red Sea floor, it solidifies into new basaltic crust. This new crust is forcing two great plates, the Arabian and African, to move away from one another at a rapid geological rate. This particular segment is moving faster than others in the Middle East. Please note that, on Figure 25, while the Red Sea section of the fault is spreading rapidly, the great Rift Fault running up both sides of the Jordan Valley, is locked tighter than a drum. Long ago God pushed together these two great tectonic plates, which are separated only by the Jordan Rift Valley between them. God’s horizontal pressure fused both sides of the valley floor to these plates, like one would push together two pieces of clay.

It is this horizontal pressure that locks the fissures in place and prevents magma from spurting to the surface on both sides of the valley. The locked section, (See Figure 26), is held together by a strong tensional force placed there by God.

In the Red Sea section of the rift God is generating a force that is in direct opposition to His tensional force that locks the section through Israel. Tensional forces are building in the Gulf of Aqabah, and soon the southern opposing force will end a long struggle by ripping apart the northern section to form a flood basalt plain. It will be sudden, abrupt, and horrifying. God will suddenly create flood basalt plains 185 miles long that begin at the Gulf of Aqabah, and then extend up to the east end of the Valley of Jezreel.

On both sides of the Jordan River Valley hot fountains of blood-red liquid, now confined by pressure below the fissures of Figure 27, will suddenly shoot hundreds of feet into the air. And a heat flash will blast toward the west to reach the foothills of the mountains of Judea, Samaria, and Galilee, and toward the east to smash against the bluffs of the mountains of Moab and Ammon. I believe Figure 28 is what John saw from the air in Revelation 14:19,20. When the angel, who has authority to say when fire is to be released on the earth, tells the angel that has the sickle to stick it into the earth, then as the sickle goes in, the vine of the of the earth (the antichrist’s army) will feel the wrath of God. God does not have to use the creations of man to fulfill his prophecies. As he did in the flood of Noah, he will destroy man “with the earth,” but this time it will be fire from the earth, rather than water on the earth.

Revelation 14:18 – And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.
