Obama is on track on foreign policy

GULF NEWSWith former senator George Mitchell engaging in “proximity” talks with the Israelis and Palestinians – discussions between the parties through an intermediary rather than face to face – the United States has entered a new and difficult phase of Obama’s policy of engagement.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama promised he would end America’s diplomatic isolation and pursue “engagement” in foreign affairs.

His opponent tried to turn his proposal against him by saying it would be reckless and naive. Obama regarded his election as a mandate for engagement, and no campaign promise has been more faithfully carried out by his administration.

Engagement is not in itself foreign policy. But it is a crucial part of the process by which the US seeks to advance its international goals, and one in which the country can and should invest great human and political capital.

With former senator George Mitchell engaging in “proximity” talks with the Israelis and Palestinians — discussions between the parties through an intermediary rather than face to face — the United States has entered a new and difficult phase of Obama’s policy of engagement. The atmosphere is far from promising. For many years, the parties met regularly in correct if not cordial discussion. But rancour over colony expansion has kept them apart for the past year.

Breaking the impasse and restoring face-to-face meetings will require all the creativity and patience that Mitchell showed in his successful peace talks in Ireland.

During the Clinton administration, I made 20 trips to the region for proximity talks to try to broker a deal for the return of the Golan Heights to Syria, an effort that revealed all the weaknesses of

proximity talks. The absence of confidence-building, face-to-face discussions between those at the highest ranks contributed to the inability of Syrian president Hafez Al Assad to overcome his paranoia over Israel’s intention. The assassination of prime minister Yitzhak Rabin on November 4, 1995, similarly deprived the negotiations of his essential authority.

In the end, even the strenuous efforts of the US could not put the talks back on track.

Beyond Mitchell’s efforts, Obama has been using engagement in pursuit of his foreign policy goals. One of the president’s chief goals, as he said on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, is “to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, and to seek a world without them”. His personal intervention in talks with President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia was instrumental in finalising a replacement agreement for the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which expired in December. The signing in Prague last month was a tribute to their mutual engagement, producing major reductions in both nations’ nuclear arsenals as well as advancing US-Russian ties in general.

The priority that Obama is giving to engagement has also been apparent in recent exchanges with China. The president, unhappy when the Chinese sent lower-level diplomats to meet with him at the climate change summit in Copenhagen, announced an arms package for Taiwan. The Chinese objected stridently.

Mutual respect

To prevent the exchanges from spinning out of control, the president sent Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg to Beijing to reassure the Chinese that the US adheres to the one-China policy and does not support independence for Taiwan or Tibet. The Chinese responded by announcing that President Hu Jintao would go to Washington for a nuclear summit and, when he was there, Hu said that China was open to considering new sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme.

Improvement in human rights has been the policy goal of recent engagement with the repressive nation of Myanmar. Late last year, two senior US diplomats went to Myanmar, pressed the ruling junta to loosen restrictions and were permitted to meet with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Parliamentary elections, though with troublesome restrictions, are now scheduled for the first time in 20 years, and the junta released a pro-democracy activist from prison.

Not much progress, but enough to be encouraging.

Policy goals, of course, sometimes remain elusive despite efforts at engagement.

Iran, while initially intrigued by the idea of shipping uranium abroad for enrichment under International Atomic Energy Agency supervision, has now descended into a sea of political invective in the wake of controversial election results and an emerging internal opposition. Nevertheless, the US president is working to build a coalition to impose a stricter set of sanctions than those presently in place to dissuade Iran from pursuing its nuclear ambitions. Engagement with all the members of the Security Council, especially Russia and China, will be vital to achieving passage at the United Nations.

As he did with Russia and China, the president will make full use of engagement to achieve that goal.

Obama has judiciously used engagement in pursuit of US foreign policy goals. The measure of his success in using this tool will be judged by the effectiveness of US foreign policy in the hardest cases, such as Iran and North Korea.

Micah 5:5,6 – And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men. [6] And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.

I have established, in previous updates, that “this man” of verse 5 is “the peace” himself because he ends the earthly reign of “the Assyrian” at the battle of Armageddon, and then brings in “the peace” that lasts for 1000 years on this present planet. It is only Jesus Christ himself who has the power to bring such a thing to pass.

I believe verse 6 to be one of the most interesting verses in the Scriptures that have yet to be fulfilled. Why am I so certain it has never been fulfilled? Because Israel has not wasted the land of Assyria with the sword, or the land of Nimrod in its entrances thereof, since Micah wrote these prophecies! At the time he wrote the borders of the expanding Assyrian Empire covered all of modern day Israel north of Ramallah, all of modern Syria, all of modern Lebanon, and all of modern Iraq north of Baghdad. The historical settling of this area between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers after the flood in Noah’s day is of great value in the interpretation of Micah 5:6.

Genesis 10:1,6,8,22 – Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. [6] And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. [8] And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.

[22] The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram.

Assyria apparently derived its name from Asshur, the son of Shem.

Later in time Asshur was worshipped as the chief God of the Assyrians. Asshur went into the northern area of the fertile plain lying between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, and his descendants that settled it were eventually called Assyrians. It is certain that Israel never wasted this area. Nimrod was the grandson of Ham through Cush. He founded a great kingdom between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, south of the area of Asshur’s descendants, that extended south to the Persian Gulf. The “entrances” into it from the east, which is the direction the Israelis would come to “waste” it, were the shallow sections of the Euphrates River

that could be waded to gain entrance. The Euphrates was, and is, perhaps the greatest carrier of top water silt on this planet. The rapid descent gradient of its waters in the steep mountains of Turkey was able to sustain an enormous quantity of erosion debris cut off the mountain slopes, but when the water came onto the flat plains of modern day Iraq its speed was abruptly lowered, and the silt deposition rapidly built up lees across the Euphrates, making it possible for some areas to be waded. The long series of dams currently stretching from Turkey, through Syria, and into Iraq have helped to regulate the flow and silt deposition of the Euphrates, but at the time of Micah’s writings there would have been a plurality of wading entrances into the land of Nimrod across the Euphrates.

Now, why have I gone into such detail as to the locations of Assyria and the land of Nimrod? Because when Israel comes up out of the Negev at the battle of Armageddon, after having been confined there by the Assyrian for 1260 days, it will conquer a specified amount of territory to its north and east.

Revelation 12:6 – And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Malachi 4:1 – For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

Zechariah 12:6-9 – In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem. [7] The Lord also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah. Zechariah 14:9 – And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.

Micah 5:6 – And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.

Israel will claim all the land from the River of Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea to the Euphrates River, with a northern latitudinal border extending to Hamath (Hama) in Syria, and a southern border extending to Kadesh in the Sinai. And all this is not by accident, but by design and promise, for it was God’s ancient land grant promise to Abraham and to Israel.

Its periphery is laid out in Genesis and Ezekiel. Its northern limits were to extend to the latitude of Hamath (Hama) in Syria, and its southern limits to the latitude of Kadesh. Its longitudinal limits to the west were to extend to the Mediterranean Sea and the River of Egypt, and its eastern longitudinal limits were to extend to the “entrances thereof” of the Euphrates River. This is the area of Micah 5:6 that Israel will “waste,” and then claim for a thousand years.

After Christ has himself, by himself, defeated the Assyrian at the battle of Armageddon to bring in “the peace” of a thousand years, then Israel will roar north out of the Negev to mop up what is left of a demoralized army that is fleeing north. Israel will take Jerusalem back, then drive north, northeast, and east to claim all the land west of the Euphrates River.

Isaiah 66:15,16 – For, behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. [16] For by fire and by his sword will the Lord plead with all flesh: and the slain of the Lord shall be many.

Zechariah 14:12-14 – And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. [13] And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the Lord shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour. The new Lebanon battlefield

Israelis don’t fully realize scope of military threat posed by Hezbollah

Nobody knows whether a war will break out in Lebanon this summer. Yet what is completely clear is that a war in the north – if and when such war breaks out – will not be like the war that took place there in 2006. Hezbollah is growing stronger every day, in terms of the number of fighters, quantity of missiles, and capabilities. And what’s even more significant: The way this military power will be utilized will be vitally different.

Every few weeks, another piece of information finds its way to the media and hints to the new face of the confrontation taking shape in Lebanon. Both sides prepare for the next round in full force, yet the lay citizen doesn’t understand much of it. Well, another rocket was smuggled to Hezbollah, but it already has 40,000 anyway, so what’s the difference, people say. All the rockets are the same, the average Israeli thinks.

Meanwhile, our defense establishment does not bother to inform the public about the kind of confrontation it should be preparing for. Israeli citizens had already been stunned by the scope of the damage that the other side can cause and rightfully asked: How come we didn’t know? How come we didn’t prepare? And who’s responsible for this failure? Yet this is precisely what’s happening now too.

Defense officials and academic experts see a very clear picture of the new battlefield in Lebanon, but the average citizen, who will be a full party to the fighting in the next war, has no idea. Nobody tells him anything.

Coincidently, a foreign professional newspaper recently published an item about the M-600 missiles supplied by Syria to Hezbollah. Yet someone in Israel finds it convenient to hide this information, just like the transfer of Scud missiles to Lebanon was a secret in Israel, until it was uncovered by an Arab newspaper. Here and there, someone hints something about tensions on the northern border. Occasionally, Arab media report about unusual Air Force over-flights.

Yet for the average Israeli all this activity is out of bounds, on the order of authorities.

So why didn’t Israel prevent the transfer of missiles and rockets into Lebanon? That’s a good question. We may get the answer for it in the history books to be written in the future.

Terrorizing civilians

It’s important that we understand that M-600 missiles in Hezbollah’s possession are not just another item in its arsenal. That’s the DNA; the code that exposes the new pattern of the group’s preparation for the next confrontation.

act that the M-600 is not a rocket, but rather, a much more accurate and effective weapon with strategic capabilities in Mideastern terms. Theoretically, Hezbollah would be able to hit the IDF headquarters in central Tel Aviv in the next war should it wish to do so. In 2006, it did not possess this ability.

Does it mean that what we saw in the Second Lebanon War – hundreds of short and medium range rockets fired at northern Israel every day – will not repeat? Not at all. Most of Hezbollah’s 40,000 rockets are still of this type, and next time it will again use them in an effort to sow destruction in northern communities and hit IDF troops before they enter Lebanon.

Based on the last war’s experience, these rockets are a “statistical weapon”: The fire is inaccurate, most rockets land in unpopulated areas, and the number of casualties and extent of damage isn’t great. However, in the next war, and in addition to the barrages we know, Hezbollah will have the option of firing dozens of accurate missiles simultaneously from dozens of launch sites across Lebanon – while directing them at one specific target.

Not only will the damage caused by these missiles be much more accurate and graver, it’s much more complicated to spot and destroy dozens of single missiles that will appear simultaneously at different sites.

The accurate missiles possessed by Hezbollah are meant to destroy strategic targets in central Israel.

Such missiles are already deployed in southern Lebanon, with Hezbollah apparently intending to fire dozens of missiles daily for many days.

At the same time, the group plans to fire thousands of other rockets, and through this combined attack destroy national infrastructure and various facilities.

The objective of the thousands of long-range missiles accumulated by Hezbollah would be to sow pure terror among civilians and undermine our willingness to fight. However, at this time, according to Hezbollah too, the group still does not possess enough accurate missiles in order to put this doctrine into action. This is precisely the junction that calls for much more intensive international and Israeli activity, in order to curb the flow of accurate arms into Lebanon, before it’s too late.

This is not the rapture of the saved. This is the return of the Lord Jesus Christ at the end of the Tribulation Period, coming with the saved to begin His millennial reign. It is identified as the Second Advent.

I never doubt the Word of God, but I do doubt the ability of myself, and others, to correctly interpret it. I know that the Word of God is infallible, but I know that men are not. If the Bible says something, I believe it even if I do not understand it, but I enjoy it a great deal more if I understand what I believe. This verse of Scripture says, “And every eye shall see him.” How is that possible? This means that survivors in England, Russia, China, Africa, North and South America, and everywhere else will all see him. How is that possible? I know it will happen because the Word says it; but is it possible to understand how within the laws that God has established in his creation? In order to answer these questions, let us examine this verse point by point.

We are told “he cometh with clouds.” This means all across the earth he will be seen with the clouds. This is certainly consistent with the manner in which he departed from the earth in the Book of Acts.

Acts 1:9-11 – And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and A CLOUD received him out of their sig

[10] And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; [11] Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall SO COME IN LIKE MANNER as ye have seen him go into heaven.

In verse 9 we are told that a cloud received Him out of their sight, and in verse 11 we are told that when he returns to rule He will return in like manner as He departed into Heaven. Please note that the Son of man comes with the clouds of heaven. The meteorological conditions of the great day of the Lord will be similar to the clouds, and their associated gloom, described in the following Scriptures.

Zephaniah 1:14,15 – The great day of the Lord is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the Lord: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly.

[15] That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,

Ezekiel 30:3 – For the day is near, even the day of the Lord is near, a cloudy day; it shall be the time of the heathen.

Ezekiel 34:12 – As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

Matthew 24:29,30 – Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: [30] And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man COMING IN THE CLOUDS of heaven with power and great glory.

I have already described in Birth Pang Numbers 9 and 10 how the gradual building of the great cloud in the stratosphere will engulf the entire outer portion of the earth’s atmosphere. This will cause the sun to be darkened and the moon not to give her light. In verse 30 the “sign of the Son of man” will appear in heaven. What is this sign? As the Son of man approaches the outer limits of the earth’s atmosphere, His “great glory” of verse 30 will light up the stratospheric cloud around the entire earth, and his glorious light will spread through it by God’s laws of refraction, scattering, and reflection. Every eye on the face of the earth will behold the blinding light of the glory of God in this great cloud. This is the sign of the Son of man in the heaven the Hebrews identified as our atmosphere. The closer Christ moves to the earth, the more brilliant will be the illumination of the cloud band around the entire earth. There will be no night as he returns to reign. He will break through the great cloud over the holy land, and, by the effects of light created by scattering, diffusion, reflection, refraction, inferior mirage, superior mirage, light inversion, and looming through air of differing temperature densities, His bodily presence image will be seen around the globe as he descends towards the Mount of Olives. The Shekinah Glory of God, in the bodily presence of the Lord Jesus Christ, will descend on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, and the prophecy of Zechariah 12:9-14 will begin to be fulfilled.

Zechariah 12:9-14 – And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. [10] And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. [11] In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. [12] And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart;

the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart;

[13] The family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of Shimei apart, and their wives apart; [14] All the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart.

UK airports close as ash cloud returns

SEVERAL British and Irish airports have closed as the ash cloud returned, drifting south and east following fresh eruptions from the Icelandic volcano.

Manchester Airport in northwest England and Dublin Airport, among the 20 busiest in Europe, were among those affected by

the cloud on Sunday, with the ash levels deemed too dangerous to fly through.

Manchester – Britain’s busiest airport outside London, where airports were so far unaffected – was among a host of northern British airports to shut from 1200 GMT to 1800 GMT (2200 AEST to 0400 AEST on Sunday), including all those in Northern Ireland.

Dublin, Ireland’s main airport, was to close from 1800 GMT until at least 0800 GMT (0400 AEST to 1800 AEST) on Monday.

Europe’s skies were closed for up to a week last month following the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjoell volcano, in the biggest shutdown of the continent’s airspace since World War II.

The volcanic ash, which can cause serious damage to jet engines, has continued to cause disruption on a smaller scale in certain parts of Europe.

A vulcanologist from the University of Iceland said Eyjafjoell activity had worsened in recent days.

“There is slightly increased activity for the past two days, there has been some ash fall around the glacier,” said Bjoern Oddsson, who was travelling to the volcano to assess the new situation.

“The column (of smoke) has increased and rises up to eight kilometres,” he told AFP, as opposed to six kilometres in previous days.

As for the effect on European flights triggered by the rise in activity, that “all depends on the winds”, said the geologist from the Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland.

Travelling southwards towards the Atlantic Ocean, it should turn towards inner Iceland on Tuesday, according to weather forecasts.

In Britain, the other airports shut from 1200 GMT to 1800 GMT as the no-fly zone extended southwards and eastwards were regional air hubs such as East Midlands, Liverpool, Leeds-Bradford, Doncaster and Humberside.

Some Scottish airports, including their fourth busiest, Prestwick, shut down, while all Northern Ireland airports closed for the period. Isle of Man airport also shut.

Britain’s Department of Transport had warned that London airports, including Europe’s busiest air hub, Heathrow, could be affected.

Eurostar, which runs high-speed rail services linking London with Paris and Brussels via the Channel tunnel, said it was laying on extra trains to meet an expected surge in demand.

Isaiah 11:15,16 – And the Lord shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod. [16] And there shall be an highway for the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt.

In Isaiah’s day the “tongue of the Egyptian Sea” is what we identify as the Gulf of Suez, a northern extension of the Red Sea that slithers between Egypt and Sinai like a long wet tongue. Since Isaiah’s writings man has dug out a northern extension of the “Egyptian Sea” to link the Mediterranean and Red Seas toge

ther. This extension is known as the Suez Canal.

The two words “utterly destroy” come from “charam,” which means “to be cut off” or “to shut up.” We are advised by God, through the prophet Isaiah, that He intends to completely shut-up the waters of what we identify today as the Suez Canal. He will do so by crushing the western and eastern banks together by movement of two tectonic plates.

In Birth Pang Number 18, Chapter 20, the division of the Mount of Olives into two remaining halves was described, with one half being carried northward on the extreme southern edge of a newly created Gaza Plate, while the other half drifted south on the northern tip of a newly formed Sinai Plate (See Figure 33). In Figure 34 you may observe the consequences of the movement of the Sinai Plate as it floats southward on an underground liquid sea of magma. As the southward drift occurs, the Sinai Plate will be jammed against the massive African

Plate. Dry land will crunch against dry land, and the “tongue of the Egyptian Sea” will be “completely shut-up.” It will be possible to walk across this area on dry land throughout the millennial reign of Christ.

When the expression “the river” is used in Hebrew, if there is no context above or below to identify it specifically, always means the Euphrates River.

The term “the river,” found above in verse fifteen, is “hannahar,” and it applies to the Euphrates River. When it states that the Euphrates should be smitten “in the seven streams,” the Hebrew construction does not mean that it already existed as seven streams, and that God sm

ites all seven.

Instead, it states that God shall smite a single river and, when he has performed that action, it will have divided it into seven streams. That single river is none other than the massive Euphrates River. This drying up of the great Euphrates is also echoed by John in Revelation.

Revelation 16:12 – And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

We are advised in verse sixteen that the drying up of the great Euphrates creates a dry highway, a highway for the millennial return of Israelite tribulation survivors from lands east of the Euphrates. The latter portion of this verse also indicates that the dry highway will extend into Egypt. The “Israel” of verse sixteen represents the descendants of the man Jacob, hence the personal pronoun “he” is used, even though it refers to the entire nation that came forth from him through his twelve sons. When the nation of Israel “came up out of the land of Egypt,” God parted the waters of the extreme northern extension of the Red Sea, the extension that Isaiah identified as “the tongue of the Egyptian Sea” in 700 B.C., but which is identified as the Gulf of Suez today.

On the day Israel crossed the “yam cuwph” extension of the Red Sea, while fleeing from the Egyptian Pharaoh, it could be said that God created a highway of dry land from Egypt to Assyria. But God closed his dry land bridge to destroy the Pharaoh’s mighty army with a flood of closing walls of water, however, the dry land bridge he describes in Isaiah will last a thousand years.

Because of the drying up of the Euphrates, and the shutting up of the Suez Canal, it will be possible to walk all the way from Egypt to Assyria without passing through waters that cannot be waded in sandals.

When God jams the Sinai Peninsula against the extreme northeastern tip of Africa, a sea-free highway will be created, a highway that will last for a thousand years.

Two great continents, the African and the Eurasian, will be fused together by God.

Throughout the millennial reign of Christ the many nations of these massive continents will move up and down this dry land bridge to worship

Christ in Jerusalem, the new capital of the world.

The commerce of Africa will flow through Israel to Eurasia, and the products of Eurasia will flow through to Africa. Israel will sit at the crossroads of the world’s land and sea commerce. She will be the center of the world. God will destroy those who came against Jerusalem during the Tribulation Period. And the city of Jerusalem will be the place where all the nations of the world come up to worship the King of kings, Jesus Christ, the Messiah of Israel.

Zechariah 14:2,3,16 — For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. [3] Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

[16] And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

Muslim cleric calls for ‘Greater Iran’

Shi’ite Islamic union would stretch from Afghanistan to Israel.

TEHERAN, Iran — A radical cleric called Saturday for the creation of a “Greater Iran” that would rule over the entire Middle East and Central Asia, in an event that he said would herald the coming of Islam’s expected messiah.

Ayatollah Mohammad Bagher Kharrazi said the creation of what he termed an Islamic United States is a central aim of the political party he leads – called Hizbullah, or Party of God.

He added that he hoped to make his vision a reality if the party won the next presidential election.

Kharrazi’s comments revealed the thinking of a growing number of hard-liners in Iran, many of whom have become more radical during the postelection political crisis and the international standoff over the country’ s nuclear program.

Kharrazi, however, is not highly influential in Iran’s clerical hierarchy and his views do not represent those of the current government.

Kharrazi’s comments were published Saturday in his newspaper, Hizbullah.

He said he envisioned a Greater Iran that would stretch from Afghanistan to Israel, bringing about the destruction of the Jewish state.

He also said its formation would be a prelude to the reappearance of the Mahdi, a revered ninth-century saint known as the Hidden Imam, whom Muslims believe will reappear before judgment day to end tyranny and promote justice in the world.

“The Islamic United States will be an introduction to the formation of the global village of the oppressed and that will be a prelude to the single global rule of the Mahdi,” the newspaper quoted him as saying.

Besides Israel, he said the union would also destroy Shi’ite Iran’s other regional adversaries, whom he called “cancerous tumors.” He singled out secular Arab nationalists such as members of Saddam Hussein’s Ba’ath Party in Iraq, as well as followers of the austere version of Sunni Islam practiced primarily in Saudi Arabia that is known as Wahabism.

Saudi Arabia and other Sunni Arab nations have watched Iran’s growing regional clout with deep concern.

The growing voice of hard-liners like Kharrazi has deepened worries even if it appears unlikely such a divisive figure would win the 2013 presidential election.

Still, even Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday that he expects the government which follows his to be “ten times more revolutionary.”
