The coming Empire of Antichrist will cover most of the known world at the time John wrote the Book of Revelation in about 95 A.D. It will not cover the known world of today. It will be a Caliphate.

When Muhammad died, Muslims faced the challenge of creating institutions to preserve the community. Muslims believe that the revelation was completed with the work of Muhammad, who is described as the seal of the prophets. The leaders after Muhammad were described only as caliphs, or successors to the Prophet, and not as prophets themselves.

The first four caliphs were companions of the Prophet and their period of rule (632-661) is described by the majority of Muslims as the age of the Rightly Guided Caliphate. This was an era of expansion during which Muslims conquered the Sasanid (Persian) Empire and took control of the North African and Syrian territories of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire. The Muslim community was transformed from a small city-state controlling much of the Arabian Peninsula into a major world empire extending from northwest Africa to central Asia.

A caliphate is an Islamic federal government representing the political unity of the Muslim world despite theological differences, with the Caliph, as the head of state, representing the heir of Muhammad’s political authority. From the time of Muhammad successors until 1923, it gave varying degrees of unity among the diverse nations that adopted Islam.

A caliphate is the only form of government that has full approval in early Islamic theology, and “is the core political concept of Sunni Islam, according to the consensus of the Muslim majority in the early centuries.”

The caliph, or head of state, was often known as “Commander of the Faithful”, or more colloqui ally, the leader of

all the Muslims.

Each member state (Sultanate, Wilayah, or Emirate) of the Caliphate had its own governor (Sultan, Wali or Emir). The Land of Islam was referred to as any land under the rule of the caliphate. A land populated by non-Muslims and land not under rule of the caliphate was referred to as the “Land of Non-Islam,” even if its inhabitants were Muslims, because they were not citizens under Islamic law. The first capital of the Caliphate after Muhammad died was in Medina.

At times in Muslim history there have been rival claimant caliphs in different parts of the Islamic world, and divisions between the Shi’a and Sunni parts.

Caliph is the head of state in a Caliphate, and the title for the leader of the global Islamic nation. It is a transliterated version of an Arabic word which means “successor” or “representative”. The early leaders of the Muslim nation following Muhammad’s (570–632) death were called “Khalifat ar-rasul Allah”, meaning the political successor to the prophet of God (referring to Muhammad). Some academics prefer to transliterate the term as Khalif. It is also found as a personal name in some countries (Amir or Aamir).

(Caliph also became the term used to designate the head of a Sufi order.)

After the first four caliphs (Abu Bakr, Umar ibn al-Khattab, Uthman ibn Affan, and Ali ibn Abi Talib), the title was claimed by the Umayyads, the Abbasids, and the Ottomans, and at times, by competing dynasties in Spain, Northern Africa, and Egypt.

Most historical Muslim governors were called sultans or amirs, and gave allegiance to a caliph, but at times had very little real authority. The title has been defunct since the Republic of Turkey abolished the Ottoman caliphate in 1924.

Kuwait busts Iran spy cell

Security officials confirm arrests of Kuwaitis whom served in interior, defence ministries working for Revolutionary Guards.

KUWAIT CITY – Security agencies in Kuwait have busted a spy cell working for Iran’s Revoluti onary Guards to feed informati

on on Kuwaiti and US targets, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

Al-Qabas, citing high-ranking security sources, said at least seven Kuwaiti men were arrested, some of whom served in the interior and defence ministries, as well as bidoon, or stateless Arabs, and other Arabs.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast, on Tehran’s Arabic-language television Al-Alam, denied the report as “utterly baseless” and part of propaganda efforts against the Islamic republic.

But Al-Qabas said security agencies were still hunting for six to seven others suspected of being members of the cell, which was dismantled in a coordinated effort between the secret service and army intelligence.

Cell members had taken pictures of Kuwaiti military and other vital targets in addition to US military sites.

Security forces stormed the home of one of the cell leaders in Sulaibiya, 25 kilometres (15 miles) west of Kuwait City, earlier this week and found maps for key sites, sophisticated communications gear and over 250,000 dollars in cash.

Al-Qabas quoted Kuwaiti security sources as saying members of the cell had confessed they were assigned to recruit new members whose ideas were similar to the Revolutionary Guards.

Cell members had visited Iran frequently under the guise of tourism, medical treatment or visiting religious places.

Kuwait is home to several US military bases. The main base in the emirate is located in Arifjan, 70 kilometres (45 miles) south of Kuwait City, and houses around 15,000 US soldiers.

The emirate is also used as a transit point for US troops into and out of both Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Revolutionary Guards are an elite military, industrial and political force set up to safeguard Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution from both foreign and domestic threats.

They have repeatedly warned they have US bases in Iraq and Afghanistan under watch, implying they will pound these targets and could shut down the sea lanes of the oil-rich Gulf if the United States launches a military attack.

Mount Margherita is the highest summit of the Ruwenzori Range in East Africa and the third highest in Africa (after Mounts Kilimanjaro and Kenya). Margherita Peak is the highest peak on Mount Stanley. It rises to 16,795 feet (5,119 m) between Lake Albert (Lake Mobutu Sese Seko) to the north and Lake Edward to the south on the Congo (Kinshasa)–Uganda border. It was first climbed in 1906 by an expedition led by Luigi Amedeo Abruzzi and was named for Queen Margherita of Italy.

The whole of Eastern Africa resembles a collection of precious stones – shimmer ing

blue sapphires – scattered across a crumpled green-brown cloth.

These are not jewels of course (though they are equally accidents of geology) but a series of lakes. You will quickly notice something curious about them, for despite great variations in size and shape they form a strangely regular pattern. For on either side of the 68,800km2 Lake Victoria, the world’s second largest expanse of freshwater, a glittering pendant of lesser lakes dangles southwards.

Nature rarely creates patterns by accident and this is no exception. These lake chains are trapped within the two gigantic trenches of the EAST AFRICAN RIFT VALLEY SYSTEM; twin cracks in the earth’s crust which carve through Africa from the Red Sea to Mozambique for a distance of 5600km. To the west of Lake Victoria, a series of elongated lakes – Albert, Edward, Kivu, Tanganyika, Rukwa and Malawi – lie in the trough of the 3000km-long WESTERN RIFT VALLEY like a string of sausages to create one of the most obvious water patterns on earth. To the east, the EASTERN RIFT VALLEY of Kenya and Tanzania contains another, less blatant line of (mostly) smaller but more numerous lakes.

Rifting is what happens when adjacent tectonic plates move apart or (in this case) a single plate attempts to crack to form two plates.

The East African rift is not the only such feature on earth but it is the only really big one that can easily be visited. Other examples are inconveniently located beneath kilometres of water as mid-ocean trenches.

Only in East Africa can we see what a major rift valley is all about.

This book describes Uganda’s part of the Western Rift Valley; the 500km-long Albertine Rift between the Virunga volcanoes and Murchison Falls. Your first encounter is likely to be when you descend into its trough to visit the national parks of Queen Elizabeth, Semliki or Murchison Falls. You’ll quickly appreciate that this 40km-wide valley is no featureless expanse, but a vast and varied landscape; a collage of forests, swamps and grasslands; lakes and rivers; gorges; volcanic craters and hot springs, all enclosed between two parallel, mountainous escarpments. The equator cuts across the valley, parts of which are as low as 600m above sea level (a.s.l.) and temperatures are appropriately hot. Yet the landscape is dominated from all directions by the freezing, 5000m high snow peaks of the Rwenzori – a range known to the Ancient Greeks and Arabians as the Mountains of the Moon.

The exact mechanism of rift formation is an on-going debate among geologists and geophysicists. One popular model for the EARS assumes that elevated heat flow from the mantle (strictly the asthenosphere) is causing a pair of thermal “bulges” in central Kenya and the Afar region of north-central Ethiopia. These bulges can be easily seen as elevated highlands on any topographic map of the area. As these bulges form, they stretch and fracture the outer brittle crust into a series of normal faults forming the classic horst and graben structure of rift valleys. Most current geological thinking holds that bulges are initiated by mantle plumes under the continent HEATING THE OVERLAYING CRUST AND CAUSING IT TO EXPAND AND FRACTURE, Ideally the dominant fractures created occur in a pattern consisting of three fractures or fracture zones radiating from a point with an angular separation of 120 degrees. The point from which the three branches radiate is called a “triple junction” and is well illustrated in the Afar region of Ethiopia (Figure 4), where two branches are occupied by the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, and the third rift branch runs to the south through Ethiopia.

The stretching process associated with rift formation is often preceded by huge volcanic eruptions which flow over large areas and are usually preserved/exposed on the flanks of the rift.

These eruptions are considered by some geologists to be “flood basalts” – the lava is erupted along fractures (rather than at individual volcanoes) and runs over the land in sheets like water during a flood. Such eruptions can cover massive areas of land and develop enormous thicknesses (the Deccan Traps of India and the Siberian Traps are examples). If the stretching of the crust continues, it forms a “stretched zone” of thinned crust consisting of a mix of basaltic and continental rocks which eventually drops below sea level, as has happened in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Further stretching leads to the formation of oceanic crust and the birth of a new ocean basin.

The Great Split and Spread of the Mount of Olives

Zechariah 14:4 – And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half

of it toward the south.

For hundreds of years preachers have proclaimed from God’s word this event would occur during the tribulation period, and the proclamation, as is normally the case, has been met will rolls of laughter from most of the scientific world. Oddly enough, these scientists have, and still are, fulfilling a prophecy made by God through the prophet Daniel.

II Peter 3:3,4 – Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, [4] And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

Daniel 12:4 – But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

Daniel’s prophecies concerning pre-tribulation events have, and are, being fulfilled, and indeed men and women have run “to and fro across”
the earth’s surface, “to and fro” into the universe, and “to and fro” in places beneath the earth’s land and water surface. This has produced a fantastic knowledge explosion in our understanding of the form and contents of God’s creation. The continuing fulfillment of Daniel 12:4 has convinced me that we are living in the days of “the time of the end.” And I am equally convinced these “to and fro” geological discoveries have so increased man’s knowledge that we now understand the basic form in which God designed the outer and enter crust of earth. These discoveries are in perfect agreement with what God revealed to the prophet Zechariah more than 2400 years ago.

Man has, in the end times, discovered a long, deep fault or “crack” in the earth’s crust that extends northward from the Red Sea through the Gulf of Eilat (Aqabah) into Israel and Lebanon. The Arabs identify it as the Gulf of Aqabah, and the Israelis call it the Gulf of Eilat. The fault itself is known to both as the “great rift valley fault”. It is a double fault in the sense that the two parts of it are separated by the valley floor between the two fault block mountains on it two sides. The vast majority of earthquakes occur along both sides of the valley from Eilat to the Lebanese border. (See Figures 24 and 25 found under our Birth Pangs Menu as Birth Pang Figures). It is the ripping open of this rift valley that will produce the earthquake responsible for the splitting of the Mount of Olives, which will itself be divided into a mini-rift valley as it spreads apart. (See Figures 30 to 33 in Birth Pangs).

The faults or “two cracks” in the earth’s surface are the northern part of a deep rift, or graben valley, which extends the length of the Red Sea, then southwestward through southeastern Africa. (See Figures 29 and 30 in Birth Pangs). The double cracks extend downward into molten magma beneath the earth’s surface. (See Birth Pang Figures 26 to 28). Widespread scientific exploration during the seventies fully exposed the spreading of the earth’s surface occurring in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and in southeastern Africa. Soon this splitting will extend northward unto the Jordan Valley, and, according to Zechariah 14:4, its effect will be sudden and dramatic. The fantastic earthquake produced in this Jordan Valley Rift, some 30 miles east of Jerusalem, will be sudden and abrupt, as will be its effect on the Mount of Olives, which will be torn into two parts during that terrible time in the tribulation period. This “suddenness” is certainly in accord with the geologic structure of today.

At the present the rift valley fault is spreading apart in the Red Sea at a rate of several centimeters each year, but the northern extension of the fault through Israel and Lebanon has been locked or “frozen” in place by tremendous tectonic forces.

When the spreading of the Red Sea fault reaches a certain critical (known only by God) both sides of the Jordan Valley will rip apart with a tremendous earthquake. This earthquake will cause the two faults, which now exist through the northern and southern flanks of the Mount of Olives, to move slightly, one north, and one south, and a new mini-graben valley will be formed between them as the middle of the mountain falls down between them. (See Birth Pang Figures 30 to 33).

When the northern and southern parts spread apart one part will be carried north with the Arabian tectonic plate, and the other will be carried south with the African tectonic plate. (See Birth Pang Figures 33 and 34).

Ice Cap on West Ugandan Mountain Range Splits

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Ugandan wildlife authorities say the ice cap on the country’s western Rwenzori mountain range has split after extensive melting caused by global warming.

Nelson Guma says ice covering Mount Margherita, the second highest peak in Africa, has melted forming a large crevasse some 6 meters (nearly 20 feet) wide.

Guma said Tuesday the split occurred on the climbing route to Mount Margherita and that tourists can no longer climb that peak, but authorities are working to create another route to the peak. The East African peak has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Environmental protection officer Henry Mujuzi says that because of global warming, the ice cap, which in the 1950s had covered four square miles, now covers less than a square mile.

The Obama Administration will play this Times Square incident to the heavens as to their great ability to head off terrorist attacks in America. The truth is this: Had it not been for private citizens noticing the vehicle, and the ineptness of the terrorist to correctly build a bomb that worked, there would have been many dead and injured.

Even though the ineptness of the terrorist to maee a bomb saved the day, Obama’s Administration got the message, and I suspect this will cause it to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan faster than they had planned.

I do not believe Iran and Syria have any desire to take the chance involved in their starting a major Middle East War, while large numbers of American troops are still on their borders

Manhunt for Times Square bombers on flights from Boston-New York-Philadelphia

US security officials began screening passengers boarding domestic and foreign flights out of Boston, New York and Philadelphia Monday night, May 3, hoping to snare a likely foreign terrorist or terrorists on the run after planting the Times Square car bomb.

By then, US officials had come around to accepting that the failed car bomb attack was coordinated by more than one person – possibly even a foreign terrorist organization – and no longer cast doubt on the credibility of the Pakistani Taliban’s claim of responsibility.

DEBKAfile’s European and Middle East sources report that the US has urgently asked West European and Middle East governments to keep a sharp lookout for the arrival of wanted suspects on the run. The investigation got off to a slow start due to the initial skepticism in the administration and New York City Hall to the possibility of a high-profile terrorist operation demanding immediate, comprehensive action.

Shortly after the car bomb parked near on Times Square was defused safely Saturday night, May 1, DEBKAfile reported: Our terror experts doubt that he was a loner. Surveillance was needed to locate the bomb vehicle and steal it from the used car junkyard, several hands must have assembled the materials and prepared the explosive device, and his lightning disappearance indicates that a getaway car must have been on hand to whisk him away from the scene before the police arrived.

The next day, we headlined the Pakistani Taliban’s claim of responsibility, taped in advance by its top bomb-maker, Qari Hussain Mehsud, and strengthened a few hours later by the release of a videotape allegedly made by Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud on April 4, weeks after he was reported killed by a US missile strike in January, and ignored at the time.

On that nine-minute tape, he vowed retaliation for the killing of Islamist leaders: “The time is very near when our fedayeen will attack the American states in the major cities.”

Shortly before he was killed by a US drone in Aug. 2009, his predecessor, Baitullah Mehsud, claimed his movement was now able to execute operations inside the United States.

US security officials did not take this claim seriously. However the evidence against Najibullah Zazi, the Detroit taxi driver charged in February with conspiring to attack the New York subway, reveals that al Qaeda in Pakistan recruited him when he arrived their to join Taliban. The two movements’ campaign of violence against the United States and US targets in Pakistan is so closely coordinated as to be virtually interchangeable.

Therefore, when Qari Hussein claimed Taliban was avenging “martyred leaders,” he included Abu Omar al Baghdadi, the al Qaeda commander in Iraq killed by a joint US-Iraqi intelligence team in mid-April.

He also warned NATO governments to denounce the US and apologize for “the massacres in Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, and Pakistani tribal areas – otherwise be prepared for the worst destruction and devastation in their own countries.”

US arrests Pakistani-American over failed car bomb

NEW YORK – The Pakistani-American arrested on suspicion of driving a bomb-laden car into New York’s Times Square told U.S. authorities he acted alone, but skeptical investigators are looking into his recent trip to Pakistan, a law enforcement source said on Tuesday.

Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Pakistan, was arrested late on Monday at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York as he tried to take a flight to Dubai, local and federal officials said.

Shahzad, 30, was due to appear in federal court later on Tuesday to face charges of “driving a car bomb into Times Square on the evening of May 1,” officials said. Had the bomb detonated, many people could have died, experts said.

“He’s admitted to buying the truck, putting the devices together, putting them in the truck, leaving the truck there and leaving the scene,” the law enforcement source told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“He’s claimed to have acted alone. He did admit to all the charges, so to speak,” the source said, adding that investigators were still looking into his activities during a recent trip to Pakistan.

If links were found between the failed Times Square bombing and Pakistan’s Taliban, which claimed responsibility for it, Pakistan could come under renewed U.S. pressure to open risky new fronts against Islamic militants.

Pakistan vowed to help the U.S. investigation.

Shahzad, who received U.S. citizenship last year, recently visited Pakistan for about five months, returning to the United States in February, the source said.

“Based on our collective experience it’s hard to really believe that this is something someone would do on their own. It seems hard to pull off alone. There’s a lot we don’t know yet,” the source said.

House search

Shahzad is suspected of buying the 1993 Nissan sport utility vehicle used to carry the crude bomb, made of fuel and fireworks, into Times Square as the theater and shopping area was packed with people on a warm Saturday evening. Had the bomb detonated, many people could have died, officials said.

Authorities searched Shahzad’s home in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the FBI said on Tuesday. An FBI spokeswoman did not say what authorities had found.

New Yorkers bore the brunt of the Sept. 11 attacks by al Qaeda militants in 2001, and Saturday’s scare was a reminder that the city of 8 million people is always under threat.

Emirates, the airline whose flight Shahzad had boarded in New York before being detained, said in a statement

that three passengers were removed from the plane. CNN reported that two passengers were cleared and released.

“Full security procedures were activated including the deplaning of all passengers and a thorough screening of the aircraft, passengers and baggage,” an Emirates spokesperson said in a statement.

“The intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans,” U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder told an early morning news conference on the arrest.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said President Barack Obama was notified of the arrest just after midnight by his counterterrorism chief, John Brennan, after being regularly updated during Monday on the investigation.

Taliban angle

The Taliban in Pakistan said on Sunday it planted the bomb to avenge the killing in April of al Qaeda’s two top leaders in Iraq as well as U.S. interference in Muslim countries.

Some officials voiced skepticism about the claim. But former CIA analyst Bruce Riedel, who last year oversaw an Obama administration strategy review on Afghanistan and Pakistan, cautioned against dismissing a Taliban role.

“They have said they want to attack inside the United States,” he said before the arrest was announced, adding it was possible the incident involved “some Pakistani-American who has never built a car bomb before in his life but who is being coached either by phone or Internet.”

Pakistan is an ally to the United States and other NATO countries fighting the Taliban in neighboring Afghanistan but is also seen as a training ground for Islamist militants.

Saturday’s failed bombing was the second significant plot in nine months targeting New York City.

An Afghan immigrant, Najibullah Zazi, has pleaded guilty to plotting a suicide bombing campaign on Manhattan’s subway system last September.

U.S. authorities disrupted that plot before Zazi and his accused accomplices were able to carry it out. Another Afghan-born man has pleaded guilty for his role in the plot.

Zazi admitted to receiving al Qaeda training in Pakistan.

Garry Hindle, head of security and counterterrorism at Britain’s Royal United Services Institute think tank, said: “We’ve been saying for a long time that this type of incompetent attack is the trend.

If it follows the pattern of previous incidents, we can expect to uncover an amount of prior overseas travel, instruction from trainers and a search for inspiration from radicalizers abroad.”

allah, and top Lebanese officials for some months now that Israel is planning a surprise attack against them in the near future.

The Iranians openly say that Israel is interested in lifting the rocket and missile threat posed by Hezbollah and possibly by Syria too via a preventative strike; yet mostly of all, according to the Iranians, an Israeli assault would aim to erase the “disgrace of defeat” in the Second Lebanon War (as the Iranians see it).

In order to reinforce their assessment, the Iranians refer to the large and frequent exercises held by the IDF on the northern border. The Iranians are also saying (and Nasrallah declares it publically) that the Israeli offensive is expected to take place in the spring or summer of 2010.

The “warnings” issued by Iran to its allies which border on Israel have a strategic aim: The Iranians wasn’t the global attention as well as that of Security Council members to be diverted away from Tehran’s refusal on the nuclear issue and the preoccupation with anti-Iran sanctions; instead, it will focus on the tension and threat of war that may erupt at any moment between Israel and its northern neighbors. And so, the Iranians can buy more time while erode

the severity of the sanctions against them.

On top of it, the global public opinion’s focus on restraining “Israel’s offensive intentions vis-à-vis its neighbors” creates an international atmosphere that makes it harder for Israel to strike Iran’s nuclear site – if it indeed plans to do so in the near future.

This is why Iran encourages Syria to boost its arms shipments

to Hezbollah. The protests and threats issued by Israel and the US in response to these arms transfers serve Iran’s strategic objectives well.

However, at this time Iran has no interest whatsoever in igniting an actual war between Israel and Hezbollah, Lebanon, and Syria. Tensions – yes; War – no.

This is the case because in an actual war, Israel’s Air Force and the IDF’s ground forces may destroy Hezbollah’s missile and rocket arm; the very same arsenal which Iran funded and assisted to build in order to use it as a means of reprisal against Israel should it strike Tehran’s nuke sites.

The same is true for Syria.

Iran also does not wish to see Hezbollah lose the dominant status it acquired within Lebanon’s political establishment, should the Lebanese blame the organization for ruining their country.

Iran’s “assessments,” which are meant to serve Tehran’s aims, enjoy an attentive ear in Damscus and

in Beirut. They are commensurate with the Mideastern mode of thinking which sees conspiracies (and especially Israeli ones) at every corner; when Iran warns its allies of an Israeli intention to avenge its “defeat” it certainly appears logical, not only to the leaderships in Damascus and Beirut but also to the people there.

For that reason, Lebanon’s Prime Ministry Hariri has enslited himself to the cause of a campaign of loybbing and pleas in Europe and Arab states aimed at averting “the Israeli attack” becuas eof the Scud transfer. He denies to anyone wiling to listen that the transfer of missiles into his country actually took place.

Yet his hysterical activity is reminiscent of a guilty party; he apparently knows more than He’ s willing to

say. Yet this did not prevent him from calling German Chancellor Merkel this week in a bid to convince her that the reports about the Scud transfers were unfounded. He is also enlisting support for his arguments in the Arab world and to this aim just attended an urgent meeting with Egyptian Presidnet Mubarak at Sharm el-Sheikh.

Mubarak made sure to allay Hariri’s fears regarding Israel’s intentions; the Germans did the same. However, Hariri is not relaxed, and the fuel vapors continue to hover in Beirut and Damscus.

Jerusalem, for its part, is doing everything in order to prevent a situation whereby one of the sides rolls down the slippery slope created by the Iranians because of a flawed understanding of reality.

France tells Syria to step up border security with Lebanon

PARIS: France wants Syria to guarantee security on its border with Lebanon, Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said Sunday after Israel accused Damascus of supplying missiles to Hizbullah.

“The situation is serious, dangerous,” Kouchner told Europe 1 radio.

“There is a stockpile of weapons, short-range, medium-range and perhaps even long-range missiles and we are concerned.”

A US anti-terror assessment team visited the main Lebanon-Syria border crossing last week amid charges that Damascus had allowed deliveries of Scud missiles to its ally Hizbullah.

“We are asking the Syrians to guarantee the security of that border,” Kouchner said. “I am not saying that it’s a sieve because a certain number of facts have not been established.

“But this is dangerous and reinforces extremism,” the French official added.

Last month, Israeli President Shimon Peres accused Syria of providing Scud missiles to Hizbullah.

Damascus has denied the charges.

Perez reiterated his accusations Sunday and told visiting Danish Foreign Minister Lene Espersen that Israel had “clear-cut proof” Syria had transferred Scud missiles to Hizbullah.

“Israel has clear proof that long-range, accurate Scud missiles have been transferred from Syria to Hizbullah, and there is no doubt about it,” he said.

Israel maintains that Hizbullah has a stockpile of more than 40,000 rockets, some of which have a range of more than 300 kilometers (186 miles) that would allow the Shiite militant group to hit major cities in Israel.

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates last week accused Iran and Syria of arming Hizbullah with increasingly sophisticated rockets and missiles, saying the arsenal undermined stability in the region.

But Gates did not say whether Syria was supplying Hizbullah with Scud missiles as Israel has alleged.

France has been spearheading moves to bring Syria out of diplomatic isolation since President Nicolas Sarkozy took office in 2007.

Hizbullah is the only Lebanese group that did not disarm after Lebanon’s 1975-90 Civil War, arguing that its weapons were necessary to fight Israel which it later faced off in a devastating conflict in 2006. – AFP, with The Daily Star
