Analysis: Bleak climate for Mid-East talks

Even US diplomats who are trying to get new talks started between Israel and the Palestinians don’t believe they will get very far. I haven’t found any Israelis or Palestinians who feel they have a chance, assuming they begin.

You can’t blame anyone for thinking that.

It is a long time ago now, but when the Israelis and the Palestinians first started talking to each other in the early 1990s there was a real sense of hope and expectation.

Something important seemed to be happening.

The most intractable conflict of the century looked as if it might even be settled.

That didn’t happen. A 16-year-old Palestinian or Israeli who may have been swept up in the excitement of

the first negotiations will now be well into his or her 30s. In the time th at they were growing up,

a lot of hope was squandered and blood spilt.

This time, if the talks happen, the two sides won’t even be sitting in the same room, around the same table, and probably not in the same building either. Even at their worst moments in the 1990s they could at least look each other in the eye.

The plan is that the US envoy, George Mitchell, will shuttle between them. The so-called proximity talks will only happen if a way can be found to get around the Palestinian refusal to negotiate while Israel continues to build settlements for Jews in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, in defiance of international law.

Sleight of hand?

Recently in Jerusalem one senior diplomat sighed and told me that a fundamental flaw of the Oslo peace process of the 1990s was that it allowed Israel to expand

its network of settlements in the occupied territories. It allowed Israel to talk, and to build, for years. He was stating the obvious, but still did not want to be named.

The Palestinians do not want any more of that. US President Barack Obama agrees.

But last year he could only extract limited restrictions on settlement building from Israel, and none at all in East Jerusalem. The impasse left US-Israeli relations in a crisis, which continues.

Reports from Washington and Jerusalem in recent weeks have suggested that the United States is trying to give the Palestinians the assurances they want to get back into talks.

One version is that Israel’ s Prime Mini

ster Binyamin Netanyahu is trying to set up a sleight of hand in occupied East Jerusalem. Publicly, he will go on proclaiming that Israel will build homes for Jews wherever it likes in the city it has declared as its capital; privately, it will tell the Americans, who will tell the Palestinians, that construction will be halted.

The Israeli mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, has already denied that is happening.

Is that part of the game, or should we take at face value

the remarks of man who has been pushing Jewish settlement inside Palestinian areas of East Jerusalem?

Let’s assume for a moment that they find a way for proximity talks to begin.

The Palestinians will need diplomatic cover from the Arab League, which will come with conditions and a time limit for results. But even if a highly unlikely diplomatic miracle happens, and some sort of deal looks possible, it is hard to see how the Palestinians could deliver their side of a bargain while the split continues between Fatah and Hamas, the two main factions.

Mr Netanyahu, on past form, will be happy with a process that drifts on into the future, buying him time to put off the moment when he would have to confront his cabinet with some hard choices about the future. His government, which has a core of right-wingers who are against territorial compromise in the West Bank and Jerusalem, would fall before he could deliver his side of a bargain.

So with so much pessimism around, why are they considering getting into talks

? US diplomats believe neither side wants to be blamed for strangling a new peace process at birth. They are fairly open in private about the difficulties but fear the alternative is a vacuum, which as usual would fill with violence.

Some realists are even looking ahead to what happens when the talks fail. Will the Americans unveil a peace plan of their own, that lays out the shape of a future settlement

? Will they allow a vote at the UN Security Council mandating a territorial compromise which would give the Palestinians the state they want, with a capital in Jerusalem and most of the land Israel captured in the 1967 war?

Smouldering fires

Just as likely is a third scenario: that Palestinian-Israeli talks will be overtaken by the explosion of one of the fires that are smouldering dangerously in the region.

In the last few months there has been a great deal of talk of another war between Israel and Lebanon, perhaps with Syria too. Israel and the United States say that Syria has transferred bigger and better missiles to Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement.

Their claim has been repeatedly denied by Syria and Lebanon. But it’s out there, and while it is war cannot be discounted.

Linked with that, because Syria and Hezbollah are allies of Tehran, is the slow-burning crisis over Iran’s nuclear plans. After years of talk, tension, and failed sanctions, it might be only months away from getting critical.

A new round of sanctions against Iran is taking a long time to emerge from the Security Council. Israel may decide by this time next year to call time on a diplomatic process it has never believed will work and send its air force to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Travel through the Middle East, as I have done this spring, and you will see a place where the cafes are full, the sun is shining and the streets are busy with daily life, not political tumult or war fever. But start a conversation and you will find that the future does not look like a welcoming place.

Obama faltering in Mideast

It seemed like a really good idea at the time.

President Obama had a clever strategy to cool down and stabilize the smoldering Middle East. This was not about friendly gestures to old foes and tough talk to old friends. The plan was something else entirely. I, too, thought it was worth a try. The idea was to quietly put the focus on Syria, the common denominator in so many areas of American interest in the region.

For years, Syria made every problem worse for the United States and its allies. Changing that could bring a giant jackpot: If Damascus could come into line with Washington, it could help bring peace to Iraq. It could help isolate Iran and raise the cost of Tehran’s nuclear defiance. It could secure a functioning, democratic and moderate regime in Lebanon. It could strengthen Palestinian moderates, and ease the path to peace between Israelis and Palestinians, not to mention between Israel and Syria itself.

Unfortunately, like much of what Obama has tried in the region, the new approach to Syria is failing spectacularly. Since Obama started his campaign to improve relations with Syria, trying to peel it out of its close embrace with Tehran and persuade it to stop supporting radical groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas, Damascus has all but laughed at U.S. efforts. It is now hugging Iran even more tightly and showering ever more resources on its allied militias throughout the region.

That doesn’t mean that American overtures have had no impact. Seeing Washington’s policy change, U.S.-friendly forces in Arab countries have reconciled with a thuggish regime they reviled.

Syria is looking stronger than it has in years, and Washington has received nothing in return for its efforts. In Lebanon, leaders of the once pro-American, anti-Syria forces have been traveling to Damascus to pay tribute to the man they had blamed for killing family members and hijacking their country. Syria has continued supporting Hamas, the bitter enemy of the more moderate Palestinian party Fatah.

The latest news from Syria shows a reversal so serious for Washington and its allies that some are describing it as a “game changer” that could precipitate another Middle East war.

It turns out Syria has just transferred some of the most advanced armament yet to its radical friends in Lebanon, the Iran-created Shiite militia Hezbollah. The Scud rockets can reach practically all of Israel, and Hezbollah — whose stated goal is the destruction of Israel — has proven time

and again that its weapons are not for show.

When Israel worries about Iran’s nuclear program, the scenario it considers more likely is not a direct attack from Iran, but nuclear materials in the hands — or the warheads — of Iran’s allies, Hezbullah and Hamas.

Observers had already expressed deep worry when the leaders of Iran, Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas gathered for a rare face-to-face meeting in Damascus last February. The editor of the Arab daily Al-Quds al Arabi called the gathering a “war council.”

Israeli and Lebanese civilians have already had a taste of what can happen when Hezbollah and Israel go to war. Less than four years ago, Hezbollah men infiltrated Israel, kidnapping and killing a number of Israeli soldiers. Israeli forces struck southern Lebanon, looking for the kidnapped soldiers — who had been murdered — and trying to destroy a vast arsenal kept by Hezbollah in the middle of densely populated areas. The war, as wars are, was a horrific experience. Hundreds of thousands of people on both sides were displaced as their homes came under fire, and many died.

In 2006, Hezbollah fired almost 4000 missiles at northern Israeli cities.

Its Katyusha rockets had a reach of about 60 miles. The new Scuds can travel more than 400 miles, reaching Israel’s main airport and all its major cities. The prospect that a warhead could carry crude nuclear materials from Iran should give the entire world pause.

Another war would be a tragedy, but it is becoming more likely.

Since coming to office, President Obama has eased economic sanctions on Syria. While keeping Syria on the list of state sponsors of terrorism, it has eased the label of international outlaw from the regime, and it has named a new ambassador for the first time since the Hariri assassination sent U.S.- Syrian relations into a deep freeze.

The Senate may block the upgrading of diplomatic ties.

But the Obama administration, too, should quickly review what once seemed like such an excellent idea.

Brig.-Gen. Yossi Baidatz, head of Military Intelligence’s Research Division, gave a rather pessimistic view of the peace process and the threat Israel faced from Hizbullah on Tuesday.

Speaking to the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Baidatz warned that the scuds reportedly transferred to Hizbullah by Syria are just the ‘tip of the iceberg’, saying the group had an organized arms supply and support network. “Weapons are being supplied consistently from Syria, and the transfers are organized by the Iranian and Syrian regimes, so they cannot exactly be called arms-smuggling operations.”

CHAPTER 17 – THE IDUMEAN WINEPRESS

Isaiah 34:1-5 – Come near, ye nations, to hear; and hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and all that is therein; the world, and all things that come forth of it.

[2] For the indignation of the Lord is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter. [3] Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of

their carcases, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood.

[4] And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.

[5] For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment.

There can be little doubt that Isaiah is speaking about one of the events of the latter portion of the Tribulation Period. He speaks of the great slaughter of the nations that will come against the nation of Israel and her great city Jerusalem at the final battle of Armageddon. He further testifies to a heavenly picture of the chaos previously described in many Birth Pang chapters. And then, in verse five, Isaiah gives us a specific location where the great sword of God will streak down from Heaven to cleave asunder the land of Idumea. This country of Idumea is also called Edom in the Scriptures, and any reliable dictionary or commentary locates it between the southern end of the Dead Sea and the northern tip of the Red Sea’s Gulf of Aqaba (See figure 23). This section of the earth’s crust will suddenly be torn apart by God’s power in the latter portion of the Tribulation Period.

It is not by accident that the great north-south crack in the mid-Atlantic, shown in figure 3, continues around the southern tip of Africa, through the Indian Ocean, down the Gulf of Aden, up the Red Sea floor, along both sides of the Gulf of Aqaba, northward across the Araba Desert, along both sides of the Dead Sea and Jordan River Valley, and finally through Lebanon to intersect another east-west fault in Turkey. God will be using this great geological rift fault to fulfill many of His Tribulation Period prophecies.

By observing figure 25, you can visualize how God is rapidly spreading apart the Red Sea fault faster than any other geological fault in eastern Africa or the Middle East.

God has been bringing an unbelievable tonnage of red hot, flowing rock called magma upward through this Red Sea crack for a very long period of time. As the liquid rock makes contact with the watercooled Red Sea floor it solidifies into new basaltic crust. This new crust is pushing apart two large tectonic plates: the African and Arabian plates.

The crack in the crust of the earth through Idumea is kept locked together by horizontal pressure applied by God

in the distant past and, consequently, the hot liquid rock beneath Idumea is kept locked deep beneath the surface. However, the rapid spreading of the crust (to the south of Idumea in the Red Sea) will continue to induce more and more horizontal pressure in the opposite direction of the force that now locks the Idumean section of the fault. In the latter portion of the Tribulation Period the splitting force of the south will exceed the locking force of the north, and the the center of the land of Idumea will suddenly rip apart as if a great sword from heaven had swept down to slash it.

When this occurs along a line from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba, the land will suddenly become what geologists call a flood basalt plain. It will be a valley filled with flowing blood-red lava at temperatures initially in excess of 2100 degrees Fahrenheit (1200 degrees Celsius), and will be accompanied by all the horrors of a flood basalt plain.

There were no Hebrew words in Isaiah’s day for magma pikes, lava intrusions, pyroclastic avalanche clouds, flood basalt plains, etc.

So w hen Isaiah received this vision from God,

he used the most descriptive words of his language to fit what he saw. We began this chapter with the terrifying picture of the judgment of God on the nations of the world and Idumea as outlined in Isaiah 34:1-5. Now, bearing in mind that Isaiah did not have our geological jargon of today, let us discover what geologic horror is created in Idumea when God’s sword comes down by examining Isaiah 34:8 & 9.

Isaiah 34:8,9 – For it is the day of the Lord’ s vengeance, and the year of recompen

ses for the controversy of Zion. [9] And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust

thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch.

The rift in the earth’s crust will remain volcanically active from generation to generation throughout the millennial reign of Christ, but the deep opening itself will be cooled by the waters of the Dead Sea as they move southward to dump their high salt content into the Gulf of Aqaba.

This drainage of the Dead Sea will be covered with many Scriptures in great detail in later Birth Pang chapters.

Gov’t to help fund Tel Aviv Pride Week

Culture Ministry donates to week-long celebration honoring victims of gay youth center attack

For the first time since the Tel Aviv Pride Parade made its debut in 1998, the government will participate in its funding, Ynet has learned. The Science, Culture, and Sport Ministry will also fund a new ‘Pride Village’ located in the city center.

This year, thanks to the funding, the Pride Parade will be merely a part of a week-long series of events, most of which will take place in the new village located at the gay center in Meir Park. Organizers are set to release the details in two weeks.

Also this year, events will take place under the title of ‘Love thy neighbor,’ in commemoration of Liz Trubeshi and Nir Katz, two young adults who were murdered at a gay community center a year ago.

The budget for this year’s parade has been set at a $130,000 (most of it from sponsors), while the events to take place at the village are expected to cost around $26,000, half of which will be provided by the ministry.

Pride Week is scheduled to begin on Friday, June 4, with a drag-cabaret act entitled ‘Holy Wigs.’ On Saturday the gay center will host an exhibit entitled ‘The Proud Gallery,’ a retrospective on artist Ziv Tidhar and his pieces.

Also in the works are a number of screenings of gay religious films, puppet shows, drag performances, and street theater, as well as artist workshops in which the audience will be encouraged to use graffiti to express themselves. The parade is scheduled to take place on the final Saturday, at 2 pm.

CHAPTER 16A – NOISOME AND GRIEVOUS SORES

This is a continuation of Birth Pang Number 14, Chapter 16.

In Birth Pang 14 we dealt with the first trumpet as it relates to the first vial, and how they will produce some of the sores that appear on mankind during the latter portion of the Tribulation Period. We will continue the discussion regarding how the majority of these noisome and grievous sores will be produced. We will do this by dealing with the fourth trumpet and the fourth vial as to how they will affect the flesh of mankind.

Revelation 8:12 + 16:8,9

[12] And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise. [8]And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. [9] And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

The first trumpet and the first vial dealt with things that were “cast upon” and “poured out” upon the earth. This casting and pouring on the earth will produce a reversal of the earth’s geomagnetic field, which will generate the skin plagues of Revelation 16:2. But the fourth trumpet of Revelation 8:12, and the fourth vial of Revelation 16:8, involve the interplay between God’s judgment of man and His use of the sun He created.

When the fourth trumpet sounds, God smites the sun to begin Event Number Four, and then has the fourth vial poured out on it to the last drop to close it. I have already exposited fully in previous chapters on Revelation 8:12. They give a complete explanation regarding the gradual formation of a great cloud shroud by volcanic eruptions. It is this volcanic activity that will eventually allow the sun to scorch men with the great heat of ultraviolet radiation.

God has created a thick layer of ozone in the earth’s vast stratosphere. If this layer was not there, man would be scorched with ultraviolet radiation, and annihilated from

the earth within a few years. Many scientists still cling to the idea that chlorofluorocarbons are breaking down the stratospheric ozone layer. However, the real culprits are the increasing frequencies of volcanic eruptions. Ozone is a form of oxygen that protects man from the sin’s deadly ultraviolet radiation. If this radiation could slip through the ozone layer it would lead to rapid worldwide outbreaks of fast growing skin cancer.

A U.S. Geological Survey scientist, Dr. David A. Johnston, missing and presumed dead since the first eruption of Mount Saint Helens, was quoted by Warren E. Leary, and Associated Press science writer as follows:

“Analysis of trapped gas pockets in volcanic and other material indicates molten magmas may contain 20 to 40 times more chlorine than earlier estimates upon which volcanic atmospheric impact had been estimated. This means that the amount of chlorine emitted into the atmosphere could equal more than 100% of the 1975 world production in fluorocarbon chemicals. Johnson said in his report that volcanic explosions powerful enough to penetrate the stratosphere have been occurring about once a year in recent times. These eruptions shoot hydrogen chloride high enough to reach the ozone layer.”

As a scientist, certified to teach chemistry and physics, I was so certain the ozone layer was being depleted by gases blown vertically into it by volcanoes, that I began to teach and write about it in books published in the late seventies and early eighties. I was so firmly convinced of it that I predicted the ozone hole would continue to grow, even after worldwide elimination of chlorofluorocarbon production by man had occurred. In the early eighties they predicted the ozone hole would decline in size by 1985.

When it did not, they said it was due to residual effects. But we were assured it would decrease by 1990. When it did not, they said the residual effects were greater than they had thought, but we would see a small decline by 1995. When it did not decline they kept on riding the same old dead horse, and predicted a thinning by 2000. It is still continuing to grow, and now they say it may not decline until 2020.

The ozone hole growth since 1979 is as follows: from very small in 1977 to 500,000 cubic kilometers in 1980, to 10,500,000 in 1986, to 22,000,000 in 1992, to 23,500,000 in 1994, to 27,0000,000 in 1999, and to 28,300,000 cubic kilometers in 2000.

And still there is no ozone hole over the North Pole, yet 74% of all ozone destroying particles are released in the Northern Hemisphere! But isn’t it strange that most of the world’s volcanoes are located in the Southern Hemisphere, with many of them south of 60 degrees latitude, while only a handful of volcanoes exist north of 60 degrees latitude.

Please allow me to elaborate why man-made CFC gases are not the culprits responsible for the depletion of the ozone layer over the South Pole:

1. 74% of all man-made CFC’s are released in the Northern hemisphere. The Long-term vertical circulation patterns of the earth in the Northern Hemisphere demand that the first ozone hole should have appeared over the North Pole – it did not!

2. The CFC gases are heavier than the atmosphere into which they are supposed to be rising, hence they cannot rise to the level of the ozone layer of their own volition.

3. CFC’s are washed out of the atmosphere by the precipitation cycle of the troposphere before they could reach the ozone layer.

4. CFC gases, without the direct help of volcanic activity, don’ t pene

trate the restricting worldwide temperature inversion, which begins well below the ozone layer at the tropopause.

Now, please allow me to exposit why I am confident that volcanic eruptions are responsible for the depletion of the ozone layer over the South Pole:

(1) The rate increase in major eruptions since 1950 is four times greater than at any time in history.

(2) Most vertical eruptions are occurring in the Southern Hemisphere, thereby causing the ozone hole to a

ppear first over the South Pole, rather than the North Pole.

(3) Volcanic eruptions forcefully blow different kinds of ozone depleting gases through the tropopause inversion into the ozone layer, bypassing much of the earth’s circulation and hydrological patterns.

(4) There is an active volcano pouring its depleting gases upward into the center of the ozone hole from time to time – Mount Erebus, which is near the South Pole.

(5) The growth of the ozone hole has been steadily toward the north over the southern tip of South America, where a thick concentration of active volcanoes exists today.

During the latter part of the Tribulation, thousands of volcanic eruptions, like those in Figure 10, will occur along the dashed lines of figure 3. These eruptions will send staggering amounts of hydrogen chloride, nitric oxides, and other ozone depleting gases into the ozone layer. The resultant breaking down of the ozone layer will allow ultraviolet radiation to pour through onto

the inhabitants of the earth. These occupants of the final days of Satan’s kingdoms on this planet will be scorched with the great heat of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. Yet they still will not repent toward the God of these plagues that physically destroy them. They will understand the processes that are causing it, but they

will not recognize that God is doing it.

Most Christian writers of today spend a lot

of effort in trying to work the entire modern day arsenal of man into the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. Most make the last day skin plagues attributable to atomic radiation.

May I assure you that the ultraviolet and cosmic radiation, which would pour down on the earth’s surface if the ozone layer weakened and

the magnetic poles reversed, would be thousands of times deadlier than atomic radiation.
