Commenting shortly after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s “Israel undermines U.S. policy” speech at the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) convention, MK Katz referred specifically to the actions of two former United States presidents.

Ex-President Bill Clinton, husband of Secretary Clinton, convinced then-Prime Minister Ehud Barak to withdraw IDF forces from southern Lebanon in 2000. George W. Bush pressured Ariel Sharon to surrender the Gaza region in 2005 and expel all Jews from the area.

MK Katz noted that in both cases, massive rocket attacks from those areas on Israeli civilian populations followed and escalated into all-out wars. By now, he continued, America should have learned from its mistakes, but Obama seems to expect Israel to divide Jerusalem and give up Judea and Samaria. The result would be is another source of rocket barrages and another war.

The legislator, a former elite special forces commander who was critically wounded during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, is responsible for helping to establish many Jewish communities throughout Gaza, Judea and Samaria.

MK Katz also responded to Secretary Clinton’s ominous warning that if Israel does not surrender Judea and Samaria, local Arabs would soon over-populate the country and cost Israel its Jewish majority.

He declared that similar demographic scare tactics are a century old and that the population figures officially being used were doctored by the Fatah-led Palestini

an Authority under then-chairman Yasser Arafat in an effort to inflate the number of Arabs living between the Mediterranean Sea and Jordan River.

Former Ambassador Yoram Ettinger has presented population statistics that show that conventionally accepted demographic figures are inaccurate and that the number of Arabs in the Land of Israel is far less than what most people believe.

Katz’s main point was that demographic fears used to defend withdrawals can not be given the same significance as security threats, such as rockets being fired from the hills of Samaria at Israel’s densest population centers if Israel agreed to a withdrawal

James Cone first addressed this theology after Malcolm X’s proclamation in the 1950s against Christianity being taught as “a white man’s religion”. According to Black religion expert Jonathan Walton: “James Cone believed that the New Testament revealed Jesus as one who identified with those suffering under oppression, the socially marginalized and the cultural outcasts. And since the socially constructed categories of race in America (i.e., whiteness and blackness) had come to culturally signify dominance (whiteness) and oppression (blackness), from a theological perspective, Cone argued that Jesus reveals himself as black in order to disrupt and dismantle white oppression.”

Black Liberation Theology contends that dominant cultures have corrupted Christianity, and the result is a mainstream faith-based empire that serves its own interests, not God’s. Black Liberation Theology asks whose side should God be on – the side of the oppressed or the side of the oppressors.

If God values justice over victimization, then God desires that all oppressed people should be liberated. According to Cone, if God is not just, if God does not desire justice, then God needs to be done away with. Liberation from a false god who privileges whites, and the realization of an alternative and true God who desires the empowerment of the oppressed through self-definition, self-affirmation, and self-determination is the core of Black Liberation Theology.

ADL blasts recent Farrakhan Speech

NGO calls addresses “virulently anti-Semitic rhetoric.”

A recent spate of speeches delivered by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan have drawn angry condemnation from the Anti-Defamation League.

Farrakhan has “returned again to his old bigotry, and ramped up his virulently anti-Semitic rhetoric,” the ADL said, in a statement released over the weekend in response to speeches in Chicago’s Mosque Maryam during the past two weeks.

“The Federal Reserve is the synagogue of Satan. The Rockefellers, the DuPonts, the House of Rothschild, these are the people that have corrupted the entire world,” he said in a March 14 speech at the mosque, according to the ADL.

A week earlier, Farrakhan told his followers at the mosque that “the Black man and woman have always been looked upon as the ‘property’ of White America; and particularly, members of the Jewish community.

They’ve always looked at you as ‘belonging’ to them.”

During that speech, he also said, “The Jewish people have said that Hollywood is theirs. Can any of you deny that they are the masters of Hollywood, where sex, lesbianism, homosexuality and violence are promoted?”

The ADL has compiled a report on Farrakhan’s speeches, which it says accuse Jews of exploiting black performers in the entertainment industry and being “disproportionately involved in the transatlantic slave trade.”

“There is no doubt that anti-Semitism and racism remain a central part of Farrakhan’s message, as well as that of the Nation of Islam,” according to ADL national director Abe Foxman.

“The large crowds he attracts demonstrate that his bigotry and hate continue to be embraced. Clearly, Minister Farrakhan has returned again to his old bigotry, and ramped up his virulently anti-Semitic rhetoric,” Foxman added.

On February 28, the Nation of Islam’s Saviours’ Day, Farrakhan told some 20,000 followers in Chicago’s United Center that US President Barack Obama’s political difficulties came after he stood up to the Jewish lobby at an Oval Office meeting last summer.

“When they left the White House, his problems began,” the Chicago Sun-Times quoted Farrakhan as saying.

Obama’s meeting last summer with leaders of Jewish groups was mostly friendly, but there were differences over his administration’s tone in dealing with the Netanyahu government in Israel.

“The Zionists are in control of Congress,” Farrakhan said in the 3.5-hour speech, listing a slew of Jewish economic advisers and adding that the “bloodsuckers of the poor” were rewarded with a bailout.

In the same speech, Farrakhan said “the white Right is trying to set Barack up to be assassinated,” and reiterated his conviction that 9/11 was an “inside job.”
He also said the February 27 earthquake in Chile, which came a day before his speech, was “not an accident. It was a precipitate of what I have to tell you today of what’s coming to America. You will not escape.”

According to the Chicago Tribune, he went on to describe a 1985 encounter with a flying saucer, from which he heard the voice of deceased Nation of Islam spiritual leader Elijah Muhammad.

He went on to offer an apocalyptic warning

to the world.

“I will speak to the kings and rulers of the world. I will speak to the pope and the religious leaders because you have to know that your time has come,” he said. “I desire to guide you and warn you of things that are coming that you must try to prepare yourselves for because we are absolutely living in the change of worlds.”

During the presidential campaign, Obama distanced himself from Farrakhan for his history of anti-Semitism.

I issued the following Prophecy Update Number 71A eight years ago in answer to numerous queries. I have not changed my mind on the role the U.S. will play in the Middle East war which I believe will begin at some point in time prior to 2015.

PROPHECY UPDATE NUMBER 71A

June 8, 2002

WHEN ISRAEL IS SUDDENLY VISIOUSLY ATTACKED IN A SURPRISE LIGHTNING JIHAD BLITZKRIEG FROM ITS NORTH, WHY DOESN’T THE U.S. ATTACK THE ISLAMIC GROUP OF NATIONS THAT ARE ATTACKING HER?

This is a question I have been asked over and over again for a long time. I was asked again on e-mail recently, and this time, rather than answering the query privately, I decided to make it a prophecy update, so that that in future I could just attach this update to any new query and save myself repeating it again.

The one thing that I learned in the National Security Agency which has been, is, and always will be the motivating factor in any decision made by any country, including the United States, may be simply stated in two words: NATIONAL INTEREST. Many will cry out and say, not so, we did it for humanitarian reasons, we did it to secure justice, we did it out of compassion, we did it out of love, we did it because we love freedom, we did it because we are a great nation: and on and on shall come statements from every realm of society, from “bleeding” liberal hearts to the “hardened” hearts of the extreme right, all giving different reasons as to why this country did something. But the truth of the matter is that, in the end, we always did it for what amounted to NATIONAL INTEREST.

The United States has quick response attack naval and marine forces in position at all times to put down a banana republic type of minor conflict on short notice. But in order to conduct a successful operation again a Jihad the magnitude of the coming attack of many nations against Israel, we would require some time to get enough regular ground troops in place to have a real hope of victory. It took us a very long time to get enough men and equipment into the Middle East to insure success in our victory against Iraq. The Scriptures indicate that 10 Islamic nations will be led by the Antichrist, and that they will quickly take Jerusalem and drive Israel into the Negev. When Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran come pouring southward on both sides of the Samarian mountains, and the Palestinians break out in all directions internally from within the enclosed buffer zone, chaos will reign supreme from Dan to Beersheva. There will be so much inner mingling of the attack forces of Israel and those of the enemy with the fleeing civilian population that air strikes would kill as many on one side as the other. Since the U.S. is fully aware of the Israel War Contingency Plan to evacuate as much of the population as possible to the Negev if overrun from the north, it will set in shock and indecision until it is too late to do anything except help to evacuate some of the coastal population from Tel Aviv to Haifa into the Negev, and to air lift supplies into the Negev. The aircraft of the Islamic nations will be under orders not to fire on western power’s aircraft unless fired upon, because the one thing they will not want is for the U.S. to get actively engaged with them in an all out war. Once Israel has evacuated as much of its population into the Negev as possible, and the U.S. sees that the Arabs are not going past Beersheva, we will accept the status quo as best for all.

Why? Because it will satisfy our NATIONAL INTEREST! How? Israel will be safe and we will still be able to receive Arab Oil shipments.

Revelation 12:5,6 – And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all NATIONS with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. [6] And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that THEY should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

NATIONS in verse 5 is the precedent to THEY in verse 6.

This is the beginning of the final 1260 days that lead up to the final battle of Armageddon, and at this time only 10 Arab nations are involved, so nations such as the U.S., Great Britain, Australia, and Canada will air lift all sorts of supplies into the Negev for Israel, and the Arab nations won’t do a thing to stop it because they will not want to be involved in a world war at this time.

Revelation 12:14 – And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

Seventy percent of the total Jewish population of Israel exists in the narrow coastal strip from Tel Aviv to Haifa. The western powers (symbolized as uncircumcised Philistines) will air lift many from this area into the Negev, flying first toward the west over the Mediterranean, then southeast over the Sinai into the Negev.

After 1260 days Israel will storm north, northeast, and east out of the Negev, driving deep into Syria, and across all of Jordan to the Euphrates River, and will thus claim the Abrahamic Land Grant given to Abraham. (See Prophecy Update Number 67)

Isaiah 11:14 – But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them. (See Prophecy Update Number 71)

Micah 5:6 – And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.

Down through the last 200 years we have built up a picture of an antichrist who rises slowly to power over a moderate period of time, then signs a peace treaty that lasts for 3 and ½ years, only to break it at that time to start the final 1260 days of the tribulation period. I agree that he attacks Israel to begin the final 1260 days of the tribulation period, but am persuaded what is pictured before the attack is largely manufactured on misinterpretation of Daniel 9:27, an error of early 1800. The rise of antichrist will be quick, as will be the events that follow his appearance. So I am saying that whenever he comes on the scene it will not be a long, drawn out affair from his appearance until his demise. In Prophecy Updates Numbers 55, 56, 57, and 58 I outlined the view that was held by most theologians before 1830, which is the belief I hold today.

In Chapter 38 of Ezekiel, in verses 2 through 6, it identifies the groupings of those peoples who will initially attack Israel from the north. But in verse 13 it identifies groupings of peoples that will not attack Israel at this time.

Ezekiel 38:13 – Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?

The closest thing to which I can relate their two questions in today’s modern vernacular is what we would identify as being a “diplomatic protest.”

You may check all reference sources available today as to the location of the descendants of Sheba and Dedan in 600 B.C., when this prophecy was written, and you will find they are almost unanimous that it represents modern day Saudi Arabia. I believe Saudi Arabia will be as surprised as the United States when Israel is attacked. I also believe Egypt, who is attacked by the antichrist after he drives Israel into the Negev, will also be shocked by his attack on Israel, and then on themselves.

Daniel 11:42 – He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.

The descendants of Tarshish were sea faring men. According to most historians they first established colonies along the coasts of the Mediterranean, then along the coasts of western and northern France, and finally along the coasts of Denmark and Sweden. As such they could represent what we call Europe, and all the western nations, which were established out of European nations, could be “the young lions thereof.”

So I expect the only part that the United States will play in this war will be to violently diplomatically protest, protest, protest, and then protest some more. I believe we will air lift many into the Negev to satisfy our NATIONAL INTEREST vested in our large Jewish population, and will continue to air lift all sorts of supplies into them for a long time.

I believe we will not attack in order to prevent a massive outcry of American motherhood in a fantastic body bag count, which is

not in the NATIONAL INTEREST, and the loss of Arab oil would most assuredly not be in our NATIONAL INTEREST.

One day, when I kept banishing around this term we identified as NATIONAL INTEREST in the agency, I was asked, would you define NATIONAL INTEREST. Now, this is not the agency definition, it is mine!

You’ve really got to hand it to President Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Saddled with a majority of both houses and a hold on the White House, they somehow managed to pass the Senate health care bill in the House. It’s practically a miracle.

And because Washington loves a victory, Pelosi is now seen as stronger, not as a Democrat who unconscionably lost 34 Dems and every Republican.

Monday conservative radio talk-show Rush Limbaugh was having a field day playing audio clips of then-Sen. Barack Obama promising that the health care package he envisioned would reduce health care premiums “by up to as much as $2,500” per family per year.

There are a few provisions in the bill Congress ultimately passed that should cut costs. For example, Democrats bravely and correctly chose to yank $120 billion to subsidize Medicare Advantage programs. Because Medicare is running in the red, seniors should pay for their extras.

Other than that, ObamaCare’s alleged deficit reduction of $138 billion is pure fiction – and it is so bald I do not understand why the Democrats even bothered.

Consider the “doc fix.”

In April, Medicare payments to physicians are supposed to be reduced by 21 percent, as Washington’s standard way of cutting spending has been to pass laws calling for spending reductions without cutting services.

In a news conference last week, Pelosi said Congress is committed to passing a “doc fix.” But it wasn’t in Sunday’s bill, because the $208 billion tab for the fix would turn ObamaCare’s fictional $138 billion in deficit reduction into $59 billion in deficit spending by 2019.

In the Sunday New York Times, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former economic adviser to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., criticized the inclusion of $70 billion in premiums for a new Community Living Assistance Services and Supports program in the bill to feed the illusion of deficit reduction, when “the benefits it is intended to finance are assumed not to materialize in the first 10 years, so they appear nowhere in the cost of the legislation.”

My fear is that as soon as workers see more than $100 withheld from their monthly paychecks for this plan, they will run from that scheme clutching their wallets, while only low-income workers who are subsidized by taxpayers remain.

It could be Adverse Selection Hell.

The largest fiction of all, however, is the contention that ObamaCare will reduce America’s health care costs.

About 32 million people eventually will be covered. Families of four earning as much as $88,000 per year will be eligible for health care tax credits.

The Senate bill established an excise tax on so-called Cadillac health care plans – the House stalled the starting date for this tax from 2013 to 2018 – with the argument that only a tax on employer-funded plans can prompt consumers to cut costs. But how? New plans will have to cover the full freight for preventive care, including annual physicals.

Pelosi boasted the measure would “end insurance company discrimination based on pre-existing conditions.” Forcing insurers to cover those with pre-existing conditions is a good thing.

But do not tell me it will reduce costs.

And it all started as a plan that was supposed to save the typical family $2,500. You have to be elected to Washington to peddle that brand of new math.

PSALM 110:7 – He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.

The brook referred to is the stream of Zechariah, Joel, and Ezekiel.

The time is still future – It is when Jesus, as the Shekinah Glory of God, enters the completed Millennial Temple

of Ezekiel 43:1-6.

Zechariah 14:8,9 – And it shall be

in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. [9] And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.

Joel 3:18B – All the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the Lord, and shall water the valley of Shittim.

Ezekiel 47:1-5 – Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar. This is when Jesus, in glorified body appearance as the Shekinah Glory of God, bows to drink of the stream of Zechariah, Joel, and Ezekiel, on his walk through where the Mount of Olives was divided, and across the Kidron Valley to enter the completed Millennial Temple.

The center of his Millennial Kingdom will be the city of his temple complex where he

will dwell in Jerusalem in the midst of Israel. No temple exists in the final city of the New Jerusalem, but those who live in the millennial

city will also live in the final New Jerusalem City.

Ezekiel 48:35 – It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The Lord is there.

John describes the Millennial Temple in Revelation 3.

The Long Battle of Jerusalem

The U.S. and Israel have agreed before that a divided city cannot stand; preventing a return to barbed wire

In July of 1996, shortly after Benjamin Netanyahu had acceded for the first time as leader of the Jewish State, he gave a speech to a Joint Meeting of the U.S. Congress. The speech ran to nearly an hour. The young prime minister, a free-market reformer from a country that had long suffered from socialist economic policies, was speaking to a Congress in which another free-market reformer, Newt Gingrich, had recently acceded as speaker.

So the mood was exceptionally warm, and the Israeli was interrupted by applause several times in the first 40 minutes. But the biggest applause came when Mr. Netanyahu turned to what he called “a subject that has been on your mind and ours, and that subject is the city of Jerusalem.” He spoke of how, in his boyhood, he “knew that city, when it was divided into enemy camps, with coils of barbed wire stretched through its heart.” Then he said:

“Since 1967, under Israeli sovereignty, united Jerusalem has, for the first time in 2,000 years, become the city of peace….For the first time, a single sovereign authority has afforded security and protection to members of every nationality who sought to come to pray there.

There have been efforts to re-divide this city by those who claim that peace can come through division, that it can be secured through multiple sovereignties, multiple laws and multiple police forces. This is a groundless and dangerous assumption, which impels me to declare today: There will never be such a re-division of Jerusalem. Never. ”

When he repeated the word “never,” suddenly the whole chamber rose, on both sides of the aisle. The ovation lasted nearly a minute.

It would be imprudent to make too much of that applause. It was Prime Minister Menachem Begin himself who used to warn that it would be a mistake to try to settle the question of Jerusalem in the U.S. Congress. But it would also be imprudent to make too little of it, particularly as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton prepares to meet Prime Minister Netanyahu next week in Washington in an effort to patch up the extraordinary contretemps of the past week.

One of the reasons Congress leapt to its feet in that ovation for Mr. Netanyahu’s declaration in 1996 is that it was by then becoming clear that the Middle East was at the start of what the Jewish Forward newspaper had already begun calling the Battle of Jerusalem.

It’s been a long struggle. The phrase Battle of Jerusalem has also been used to describe General Allenby’s taking of the city from the Turks in World War I.

It was the first time Jerusalem came under what might be called Christian rule since the 12th century. The first time it was divided was after the partition of Palestine was voted by the United Nations in 1947 and the British mandate was brought to an end in 1948.

The U.S. at the time refused to recognize Israeli claims, even in the western party of the city, despite the fact that by the mid-19th century Jerusalem had already emerged with a Jewish majority. Instead the United Nations was advancing a scheme under which Jerusalem would become an international city, belonging to no country. The U.N.’s non-binding resolution on the matter was repudiated by Israel.

President Harry Truman waffled a bit, but eventually abandoned the internationalization idea. The division of the city lasted until 1967, when Jordan, which controlled the eastern sections and despoiled Jewish graves and other sacred sites, joined the attack against Israel, only to be driven out altogether. Israel then annexed the eastern part of the city, and the walls and wire that divided the city were removed.

In the following decades, as the Arabs pressed their long war against Israel, a remarkable transformation took place. Jerusalem’s population soared, to more than 700,000 today from 263,000 in 1967 and 165,000 in 1948. Both the Arab and Jewish populations have risen sharply in the years since Israel gained control of the entire city.

In 1993, Israel, led by Yitzhak Rabin, and the Palestine Liberation Organization, led by Yasser Arafat, signed a Declaration of Principles, seeking to set the stage for peace negotiations. It deferred the question of Jerusalem to the end of the process, to what were called permanent status negotiations. Mr. Clinton would devote much of his political capital to trying to bring it all together before the end of his presidency.

Congress, however, h ad long since begun to grow restive for recognition of the new re

alities, and in 1995, it passed, by an overwhelming vote, a measure called the Jerusalem Embassy Act. It was designed to end the absurdity of America failing to move its embassy in Israel to the country’s capital and to establish Israel’s capital in America law. It held that “Jerusalem should remain an undivided city in which the rights of every ethnic and religious group are protected” and that “Jerusalem should be recognized as the capital of the State of Israel.”

Yet since then, no U.S. president, nor any state secretary, has acknowledged Congress’s standing on the question of Jerusalem. Mr. Clinton refused to sign the Jerusalem Embassy Act, and it went into law without his signature. Nor have subsequent presidents abided by the spirit of the legislation. Instead they relied on a waiver in the law that gave the president discretion to delay the embassy move by six months—and to renew the delay by six months—to protect national security interests.

The waiver has since been used over and over again. When President George W. Bush used the waiver, he repeatedly stated that he intended to move the embassy at the right time. But President Barack Obama has dropped any statement of his future intentions. His administration, moreover, is now advancing so-called “proximity talks” that hold the danger the city could yet be divided in the way the Congress once cheered against dividing it.

This is the context in which Israel’s religious Jewish community was so eager to have issued zoning approval for the apartments for the Haredi—or fervently religious—Jews. The timing of the action, coming as Vice President Joseph Biden was in Israel, has been widely denounced, even after Mr. Netanyahu himself apologized. It may be that, as Mr. Netanyahu suggested, the timing of the announcement was, from his point of view at least, an accident.

But it may also be that the religious Jews who control the ministry that made the announcement just looked at the political situation and decided they’d best mark their rights. And for all the hubbub the religious faction provoked, there are those of us who think they were wise to do so precisely at the moment of maximum sensitivity, when the visiting American vice president was to travel to the seat of the Palestinian authority at Ramallah.

There is a déjà vu quality to the whole thing. After Mr. Netanyahu became prime minister, President Clinton undertook a campaign to pressure Israel to give ground and keep the so-called peace process intact.

Mr. Netanyahu did, in 1997, retreat from much of Israel’s second holiest city, Hebron, leaving the religious Jewish families who wanted to live near the graves of the patriarchs and matriarchs in an armed camp.

The Clinton administration put great hope in the election, in 1999, of Ehud Barak, leader of the Labor Party, as premier. One of Israel’s greatest military heroes, Mr. Barak had vowed in his political campaign that he would never permit a division of Jerusalem.

As he got drawn into the peace process, however, he did offer, at the talks known as Camp David II, to give the Palestinians part of Jerusalem as a capital. Yasser Arafat spurned a deal and returned to instigate what became known as the Second Intifada. The voters promptly ousted Mr. Barak and brought in as premier the man the left had for so long detested, Ariel Sharon.

Mr. Sharon had the good fortune to enter office as the American leadership was being turned over to Mr. Bush, who had enormous respect for his Israeli counterpart—for his military prowess, for the long historical sweep of his world view and for his vast experience in government.

They both understood that in the war that followed Sept. 11, 2001, America’s enemy was also Israel’s enemy.

So Messrs. Bush and Sharon decided early on to attenuate the quarrelsome issues to focus on their own strategic military issues—Mr. Sharon defeated the intifada and Mr.

Bush levied the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. What a tragedy it is that Mr. Obama has not been able to reach a similar modus vivendi with Mr. Netanyahu. The latest contretemps seems to have been taken by the Palestinians as an invitation to yet more violence. Which, if past is prologue, will lead to more demands on Israel and more threats.

It is a moment for Ms.

Clinton to remember one of Prime Minister Begin’s visits with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. It is recounted in an often-quoted 1992 column by Moshe Zak, then of the Jerusalem Post.

The conversation grew so heated over the question of settlements that one of the senators raised his voice and banged on the table with his fist, threatening to cut off aid. Mr. Begin kept his dignity, replying that the desk was “designed for writing, not for fists.” He warned that, though Israel was grateful for America’s help, America was not “entitled to impose on us what we must do.” The senator who had lectured him was Mr. Biden, who would go on to co-sponsor the Jerusalem Embassy Act.

Why did Obama decide to turn the e. J’lem construction announcement into a crisis?

Why did President Barack Obama choose to turn a gaffe into a crisis in US-Israeli relations?

And a gaffe it was: the announcement by a bureaucrat in the Interior Ministry of a housing expansion in a Jewish neighborhood in north Jerusalem. The timing could not have been worse: Vice President Joe Biden was visiting, Jerusalem is a touchy subject and you don’t bring up touchy subjects that might embarrass an honored guest.

But it was no more than a gaffe. It was certainly not a policy change, let alone a betrayal. The neighborhood is in Jerusalem, and the 2009 Netanyahu-Obama agreement was for a 10-month freeze on West Bank settlements excluding Jerusalem.

Nor was the offense intentional. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu did not know about this move – step four in a seven-step approval process for construction that, at best, will not even start for two to three years.

Nonetheless, the prime minister is responsible. He apologized to Biden for the embarrassment. When Biden left Israel on March 11, the apology appeared accepted and the issue resolved.

The next day, however, the administration went nuclear. After discussing with the president specific language she would use, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Netanyahu to deliver a hostile and highly aggressive 45-minute message that the Biden incident had created an unprecedented crisis in US-Israeli relations.

Clinton’s spokesman then publicly announced that Israel was now required to show in word and in deed its seriousness about peace.

Israel? Israelis have been looking for peace – literally dying for peace – since 1947, when they accepted the UN partition of Palestine into a Jewish and Arab state. (The Arabs refused and declared war. They lost.) Israel made peace offers in 1967, 1978 and in the 1993 Oslo peace accords that Yasser Arafat tore up seven years later to launch a terror war that killed a thousand Israelis. Why, Clinton’s own husband testifies to the remarkably courageous and visionary peace offer made in his presence by Ehud Barak (now Netanyahu’s defense minister) at the 2000 Camp David Talks.

Arafat rejected it.

In 2008, prime minister Ehud Olmert offered equally generous terms to Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. Refused again.

IN THESE long and bloody 63 years, the Palestinians have not once accepted an Israeli offer of permanent peace, or ever countered with anything short of terms that would destroy Israel. They insist instead on a “peace process” – now in its 17th post-Oslo year and still offering no credible Palestinian pledge of ultimate coexistence with a Jewish state – the point of which is to extract preemptive Israeli concessions, such as a ban on Jewishconstruction in parts of Jerusalem conquered by Jordan in 1948, before negotiations for a real peace have even begun.

Under Obama, Netanyahu agreed to commit his center-right coalition to acceptance of a Palestinian state; took down dozens of anti-terror roadblocks and checkpoints to ease life for the Palestinians; assistedWest Bank economic development to the point where its GDP is growing at an astounding 7 percent a year; and agreed to the West Bank construction moratorium, a concession that Clinton herself called “unprecedented.”

What reciprocal gesture, let alone concession, has Abbas made during the Obama presidency? Not one.

Indeed, long before the Biden incident, Abbas refused even to resume direct negotiations with Israel. That’s why the Obama administration has to resort to “proximity talks” – a procedure that sets us back 35 years to before Anwar Sadat’s groundbreaking visit to Jerusalem.

And Clinton demands that Israel show its seriousness about peace?

Now that’s an insult.

So why this astonishing one-sidedness? Because Obama likes appeasing enemies while beating up on allies – therefore Israel shouldn’t take it personally (according to Robert Kagan)? Because Obama wants to bring down the current Israeli coalition government (according to Jeffrey Goldberg)?

Or is it because Obama fancies himself the historic redeemer whose irresistible charisma will heal the breach between Christianity and Islam or, if you will, between the post-imperial West and the Muslim world – and has little patience for this pesky Jewish state that brazenly insists on its right to exist, and even more brazenly on permitting Jews to live in its own ancient, historical and now present capital

?

Who knows? Perhaps we should ask those Obama acolytes who assured the 63 percent of Americans who support Israel – at least 97 percent of those supporters, mind you, are non-Jews – about candidate Obama’s abiding commitment to Israel.
