Unless one has been in close association in the Middle East with followers of the Islamic faith it is not possible to understand the strong delusion that has been taught by its clerics from the cradle to the grave, nor is there a faith so strongly enforced by those who rule and teach it.

Those who have been placed under this delusion see the clerics as angels of light, but their teachings are doctrines of demons.

I have trained, worked, and attended IHL’s with Islamic believers.

I’ve been amazed at the strong spiritual grip their faith has on their souls and flesh.

Some of them are so certain of the six things listed in the body of the PMV Excerpt they actually desire to die the martyr’s death for Allah, believing He will give them what the cleric promises.

II Corinthians11:14,15 – And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

Mother celebrates son’s Martyrdom death:

“All mothers should sacrifice their child for Palestine”

Palestinian Authority TV news recently chose to feature a Palestinian mother promoting her son’s death as a positive goal.

Upon learning of her son’s death in an Israeli air strike, the mother explained that she had always hoped for her son’s Shahada – death as a Martyr — and recommended that other mothers likewise “sacrifice their child for Palestine.”

The words of another woman, chosen by PA TV news for the pre-recorded news report, described how Palestinian society sees Martyrs as grooms. This is based on the Islamic tradition, promoted actively by the PA and Hamas, that Martyrs will marry 72 virgins in Paradise.

PA TV news report:

Mother upon news of son’s death in an Israeli air strike: “We had always hoped for his [my son’s] Martyrdom (Shahada), knowing he wanted to die as a Martyr (Shahid). Every time he went out, we would say to him, ‘May Allah be with you.’ We knew that he wanted to die as a Martyr.

Praise to Allah, he sought Martyrdom, and he achieved it. My message to every mother is to sacrifice her child for Palestine.”

Second woman: “By Allah, we welcome every Martyr as if he were a groom among us.”

Palestinian Media Watch has documented that these two ideas — that death is a higher value than life and that Martyrdom death leads to a wedding between the Martyr and the virgins of Paradise — have been promoted actively by both the Palestinian Authority and Hamas for years.

Palestinian schoolbooks teach children that aspiring to death is better than life: “O heroes, Allah has promised you victory … Do not talk yourselves into flight… Your enemies seek life while you seek death.”

“They seek spoils to fill their empty stomachs while you seek a Garden [Paradise] as wide as are the heavens and the earth… Death is not bitter in the mouth of the believers. These drops of blood that gush from your bodies will be transformed tomorrow into blazing red meteors that will fall down upon the heads of your enemies.”

A music video broadcast on PA TV from the year 2000 until as recently as Feb. 7, 2010, depicts a Martyr being greeted in Paradise by the Virgins all dressed in white.

The two mothers’ statements in the PA TV news broadcast reiterate how successfully these messages have been transmitted to the Palestinian public.

Palestinian Media Watch has documented many examples of parents celebrating their children’s Martyrdom deaths.

On Jan. 1, 2010, as reported by PMW, a Hamas TV cleric described the six rewards in Paradise granted the Martyr upon dying.

1- The Shahid’s sins are forgiven

2- He sees his place in Paradise and lives a full life of joy with Allah

3- He is protected from “the Great Shock” on Judgment Day

4- He is crowned with a crown of honor

5- He marries 72 dark-eyed wives

6- He will be able to intervene on behalf of 70 of his family members on
Judgment Day, thereby ensuring them the reward of Afterlife

The cleric added: “One description of the Dark-Eyed: ‘If one of the women of
Paradise would look towards the earth, she would light up everything between
heaven and earth.'”

FOOD security is the ability of a nation or community to secure its needs of basic food commodities by producing them locally or importing the best quality from abroad at lowest prices. The greater the self-reliance on food needs the less political pressure a nation will face.

Exporting countries, particularly in times of crisis, need to keep most of their products for their people. Therefore, and in case of food shortage at global level and weak international competition, these countries keep the best quality for them and export the worst ones for highest prices.

The Arab world is suffering acute food shortage and the financing of food imports has become a tremendous burden on most Arab countries as it depletes a large amount of nati

onal income without covering the shortage in most of food commodities in the Arab countries, especially wheat.

The decline in domestic production and increasing dependence on imports have weakened the capabilities of the Arab countries to become self-sufficient. This constitutes a greater danger to their citizens, because what are imported are essentials and have no alternatives and cannot be dispensed with.

In addition to the external factors, there are negative aspects in the Arab countries that have deepened the problem. The population increase has exceeded the average growth rates in agricultural production, a matter that led to an imbalance in the supply and demand conditions. At the same time the migration from rural areas to cities led to urban expansion at the expense of agricultural lands.

The lack of sufficient water resources and misuse of these resources as well as the dependence on irrigated agriculture have increased the rate of water consumption, especially the groundwater to the extent that many people, especially in Saudi Arabia, accuse farmers of wasting the national water resources.

In addition, cultivated area in Arab countries has declined to one third of the cultivable lands. There are many reasons for this such as the lack of optimal use of all resources to compensate for

the big shortage in food commodities, the absence of unified Arab action to develop agricultural exports and an inability to strike a balance between locally produced food and imported ones.

TO this should be added the neglect of research and development in the field of seeds at a time when international companies conduct research on seeds that need little quantities of ordinary water and high saline water. In addition, subsidies to farmers have decreased while the prices of agricultural inputs have gone up. There are also restrictions on the terms of delivery of the harvest in the “silos” by permitting the delivery of limited quantities compared to the full capacity of the agricultural projects. This makes farmers go for delivery permits from other people who have permits but have no farms for higher amounts deducted from their profits. In this connection, it should be noted that there is a need to issue delivery permits in accordance with the production capacity of the farms. Permits should be granted only to those farmers who have actually cultivated their farms. In addition, farmers are compelled to sell their crops to the government for prices fixed by the government itself, forcing some to abandon their farms.

Production of food commodities in terms of size and type is governed by the policies of the big powers in the world, which have turned some of these commodities such as wheat, sugar, and rice into strategic commodities used as a weapon against poor or underdeveloped countries to subdue them to serve their own interests.

The problem worsens in the event of international crises such as those we are currently experiencing.

WE must make the best use of the huge agricultural potentials in the Arab world by overcoming the problems that prevent the exploitation of their full use. All this must be handled in a comprehensive development perspective to make the optimum utilization of the components of the agricultural sector. Attention also must be paid to the decline of the agricultural economy in these countries, noting that agriculture is still a vital source of living for a large number of people. What is more, it has to do with food security, which affects human beings and their very existence.

The industrialized world is also part of the problem, as they increase the demand for biofuels.

For example, in Indonesia and Malaysia there is a continuous increase in the exploitation of vast agricultural areas to grow plants used in biofuels industry. Palm trees are used for production of oil. This led to a rise in the prices of vital crops needed by the people, such as corn and wheat. Therefore we must support the international institutions that fight against such practices.

We must develop food crops that give high productivity, resist diseases and need little water or accept saline water.

We should also look for better ways of irrigation that keep the plants alive and do not deplete our water resources quickly. This can be achieved only through participation in international conferences and training national cadres to undertake their responsibility in this regard.

Food security keeps us away from foreign interference and alleviates poverty of the people. We must implement integrated agricultural policies in all Arab countries to bridge the gap between the production of food crops and the total demand for them. This way we will be able to achieve food sufficiency for all Arab people.

Over a million Syrians affected by drought

Some 300,000 families have fled eastern, northeastern Syria to search for work in urban cities.

DEIR EZ ZOUR – Drought in eastern and northeastern Syria has driven some 300,000 families to urban settlements such as Aleppo, Damascus and Deir ez Zour in search of work in one of the largest internal displacements in the Middle East in recent years.

The country’s agriculture sector, which until recently employed 40 percent of Syria’s workforce and accounted for 25 percent of gross domestic product, has been hit badly, but farmers themselves are worst affected, say aid officials.

In some villages, up to 50 percent of the population has left for nearby cities.

“Farmers who depend on only one crop are in trouble – they have nothing else to help them and they have to move,” said Abdulla Bin Yehia, a representative of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Damascus.

Those with livestock have seen the cost of feed rise 75 percent, accord ing to FAO, result

ing in the deaths of up to 80 percent of livestock on small and medium-sized farms.

More than one million people, already bordering on the poverty line because of low incomes, have been affected by the drought. Outdated and wasteful irrigation methods used by farmers are also contributing to the problem, experts said.

Syria’s water shortages have been worsening year by year.

In 2006, northeastern regions such as Hasakeh and Qameshleh were the first to feel the effects of a lack of rain. Since then, farmers and crop-growers in southern and eastern areas – both east and west of Deir ez Zour, and south of Damascus in Sweida – are now suffering from a major drop in rainfall.

Addressing the issues on 15 February, the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Syrian government conducted a training session in the eastern Syrian city of Deir ez Zour to assist emergency food distribution.

In one of a series of meetings of the Syrian Economics Society in Damascus in January, officials for the first time shed light on the extent of the drought in eastern Syria: Almost 60,000 families with 100 cattle or less have lost half their animals and poverty levels stand at 80 percent, according to Khader al-Muhaisen, who spoke on behalf of the Syrian Peasants’ Union.

Fighting drought

A number of initiatives have been tabled to reduce the effects of drought on Syria’s rural communities, including a programme involving Syria’s General Establishment for Drinking Water and Sewerage, FAO, and the Swiss Agency for Cooperation and Development (SDC), which hopes to finish a US$40 million project to provide drinkable water to 130,000 people in the region of Hasakeh by the end of 2010.

Additionally, in January the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform and FAO signed a document to enhance the capability of early warning drought systems in cooperation with SDC, which is to provide funding $476,000 and technical aid.

With hundreds of thousands having left their farms and communities, this year’s rainfall may go to waste with no one present to farm the land and to grow and cultivate crops.

Bin Yehia of FAO said his organization is encouraging people to return to their villages by offering free wheat and other seed to farmers but told IRIN: “Returning to their communities is entirely voluntary but these incentives are important in order to give them hope for their land and for their futures”.

However, the key barrier to assisting communities in eastern and northeastern Syria remains funding. Last August, $48 million in international assistance was pledged towards the Syria Drought Response Plan but at the end of January only a small fraction had been received, according to local media reports.

“We are at a crucial time of the year for farmers now. We have had enough rain for the seeds of crops to germinate but there are two threats. If there is no more rain in the drought-affected areas within the next six to seven weeks then we may not have any crop. Also, if these areas experience frost then the crops will be destroyed and farmers will be devastated for another year,” said FAO’s Bin Yehia.

So far this winter, recorded rainfall across the country has been higher than in previous years and many are hoping for this to continue into March when water for crops is most needed.

But officials are cautious: “It is only at the end of March or beginning of April that we can say if this year’s crop will be successful or not. For now we can only say ‘so far, so good,’” said Bin Yehia.

I Corinthians 13:5 – Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

DOTH NOT BEHAVE ITSELF UNSEEMLY,

Love is concerned with giving itself, not with demanding its rights. Only God knows how many times I have be

haved myself unseemly in my conduct when I felt a person was infringing on my territorial rights, like an animal protects its territory.

In the more extreme cases of my time in the National Security Agency, my conduct bordered on being disgraceful, dishonorable, or what one might consider indiscreet, which is what the idea of this phrase carries. How many times have you blown up when a situation arose that you misunderstood, and then had to suffer extreme embarrassment when you discovered your conduct was totally out of line, and if you had simply kept your mouth shut in love, none of the embarrassment would have been experienced. The absolute extremity of the word used for “unseemly” is used by Paul to refer to the act of erotic love between two men in Romans 1:27, but he does not use it in this manner in his first epistle to the Corinthian church.

Romans 1:27 – And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men work

ing that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

SEEKETH NOT HER OWN,

Some people learn to “use” other people to accomplish their objectives,

to reach their goals and dreams in life, without regard to the feelings and welfare of those they use. A goal oriented person often sacrifices others to get what he thinks is important to achieve success. The love of Christ is quite the opposite.

Philippians 2:3-5 – Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. [4] Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

[5] Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

IS NOT EASILY PROVOKED,

The word translated “provoked” means to sharpen by rubbing on anything, as one would sharpen a razor. In the concourse of life we constantly rub our wills against one another, and sometimes our will turns razor sharp with cutting remarks against those who rub us. A love that lets the rubbing roll off, rather than sharpening the will to anger, manifests God’s love. If we are going to provoke someone, we need to provoke (stimulate) them to love others in the church.

Hebrews 10:24,25 – And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: [25] Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

THINKETH NO EVIL;

The word translated “thinketh” has the meaning of an act of “imputing” wickedness to them by imagining they are performing it.

It implies the questioning of their motives in what they do, imputing an “evil motive” as the reason for

their action. If I had a quarter for every time I had thought a person had an evil or self-serving design in what they were doing, and then discovered I was quite wrong, I would be a wealthy man.

There are times in the Scriptures we are told to judge the conduct of those who disobey the directives of God, and indeed we should, but the judgment in the phrase “thinketh no evil” goes to motive, and we should be very careful in passing judgments on a man or woman’s motive for the acts they perform as being evil.

The first-year agenda of a promising young president has gone down in flames.

In the latter days of the Carter presidency, it became fashionable to say that the office had become unmanageable and was simply too big for one man. Some suggested a single, six-year presidential term.

The president’s own White House counsel suggested abolishing the separation of powers and going to a more parliamentary system of unitary executive control. America had become ungovernable.

Then came Ronald Reagan, and all that chatter disappeared.

The tyranny of entitlements

? Reagan collaborated with Tip O’Neill, the legendary Democratic House speaker, to establish the Alan Greenspan commission that kept Social Security solvent for a quarter-century.

A corrupted system of taxation? Reagan worked with liberal Democrat Bill Bradley to craft a legislative miracle: tax reform that eliminated dozens of loopholes and slashed rates across the board – and fueled two decades of economic growth.

Later, a highly skilled Democratic president, Bill Clinton, successfully tackled another supposedly intractable problem: the culture of intergenerational dependency. He collaborated with another House speaker, Newt Gingrich, to produce the single most successful social reform of our time, the abolition of welfare as an entitlement.

It turned out that the country’s problems were not problems of structure but of leadership. Reagan and Clinton had it. Carter didn’t.

Under a president with extensive executive experience, good political skills and an ideological compass in tune with the public, the country was indeed governable.

IT’S 2010 and the first-year agenda of a popular and promising young president has gone down in flames. Barack Obama’s two signature initiatives – cap-and-trade and health care reform – lie in ruins.

Desperate to explain away this scandalous state of affairs, liberal apologists haul out the old reliable from the Carter years: “America the Ungovernable.” So declared Newsweek.

“Is America Ungovernable?” coyly asked The New Republic. Guess the answer.

The rage at the machine has produced the usual litany of systemic explanations.

Special interests are too powerful.

The Senate filibuster stymies social progress.

A burdensome constitutional order prevents innovation.

If only we could be more like China, pines Tom Friedman, waxing poetic about the efficiency of the Chinese authoritarian model, while America flails about under its “two parties … with their duel-to-the-death paralysis.”

The better thinkers, bewildered and furious that their president has not gotten his way, have developed a sudden disdain for our inherently incremental constitutional system.

Yet, what’s new about any of these supposedly ruinous structural impediments

? Special interests blocking policy changes? They have been around since the beginning of the republic – and since the beginning of the republic, strong presidents, like the two Roosevelts, have rallied the citizenry and overcome them.

And then, of course, there’s the filibuster, the newest liberal bete noire. “Don’t blame Mr. Obama,” writes Paul Krugman of the president’s failures. “Blame our political culture instead. … And blame the filibuster, under which 41 senators can make the country ungovernable.”

Ungovernable, once again.

Of course, just yesterday the same Paul Krugman was warning about “extremists” trying “to eliminate the filibuster” when Democrats used it systematically to block one Bush (43) judicial nomination after another. Back then, Democrats touted it as an indispensable check on overweening majority power.

Well, it still is.

Indeed, the Senate with its ponderous procedures and decentralized structure is serving precisely the function the Founders intended: as a brake on the passions of the House and a caution about precipitous transformative change.

LEAVE IT to Mickey Kaus, a principled liberal who supports health care reform, to debunk these structural excuses: “Lots of intellectual effort now seems to be going into explaining Obama’s (possible/likely/impending) health care failure as the inevitable product of larger historic and constitutional forces.

… But in this case there’s a simpler explanation: Barack Obama’s job was to sell a health care reform plan to American voters. He failed.”

Antichrist Will Treat Women with Disrespect!

Daniel 11:36 – And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.

I, like most expositors, have long referred to this king as the same willful king of II Thessalonians 2:4.

II Thessalonians 2:4 – Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

I have always taught “the indignation,” which was to end his reign, occurred when he would “come to his end” at the battle of Armageddon in Daniel 11:45 to 12:1, the specifics being laid out in Revelation 19:19-21 (See Archive Prophecy Update Number 75).

Daniel 11:45 to 12:1 –And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him. [1] And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

Revelation 19:19-21 – And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. [20] And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. [21] And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

This would fulfill the last two phrases in Daniel 11:36 – “and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.”

I have read some expositors after 1740 that used Daniel 11:37 to prove he will be gay. I do not believe that will be the case.

Daniel 11:37 – Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

The antichrist will be a descendent of Abraham, but he will have no regard for the God of Abraham through Jacob, the man Israel. He will rise out of the Islamic faith through Ishmael, but in the end will claim to be the god of gods, perhaps even Allah incarnate, thereby magnifying himself above all gods.

The phrase I wish primarily to address is “nor the DESIRE of women.” The word DESIRE is “chemdah,” which simply means “delight.” It’s Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance Number is 2532, and though it has several derivatives, I could only find four where the exact 2532 variation was used for forms of DESIRE. They are as follows, and do NOT seem to indicate a preference for being associated with homosexual desire.

Daniel 11:37 – Neither shall he REGARD the God of his fathers, nor the DESIRE (2532) of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

Haggai 2:6,7 – For thus saith the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; [7] And I will shake all nations, and the DESIRE (2532) of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts.

Many equate the object of the DESIRE expressed in the verse to be the desired Messiah, but there are other interpretations of verse seven. However, none of the interpretations associated with it indicated A DESIRE manifesting fleshly lust, but rather a quite acceptable desire. They all indicate a REGARD for the DESIRE of nations that shall come.

I Samuel 9:17-20 – And when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people. [18] Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer’s house is.

[19] And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart. [20] And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the DESIRE (2532) of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s house?

This DESIRE would certainly not be an undesirable type of fleshly lust, but rather a good one. It implies that the REGARD of Israel was placed on Saul.

II Chronicles 21:5,20 – Jehoram was thirty and two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. [20] Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years, and departed without being DESIRED. Howbeit they buried him in the city of David, but not in the sepulchres of the kings.

Here, the word DESIRED is used in an unfavorable sense, in that the king fell short of having the people’s REGARD.

In Haggai 2:6 & 7, I Samuel 9:17-20, and II Chronicles 21:5 & 20, the connotation of the word DESIRE implies REGARD, either used in a positive or negative sense.

Daniel 11:37 – Neither shall he REGARD the God of his fathers, nor the DESIRE of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

I believe the DESIRE referred to in this verse is used in the negative sense, meaning the antichrist will have NO REGARD for the DESIRE of women, which is certainly the case for Islamic fundamentalism. He will have no REGARD for what women DESIRE, only what males DESIRE. Islamic women are at times treated as mere producers of children, kept in male bondage with very few human rights. I believe the antichrist will be the ultimate male chauvinist, and will consider women as one click above livestock. He is the Assyrian of Micah 5:5 who will be defeated by THIS MAN referring back to Micah 5:4, who is the same HE in Micah 5:6 that will deliver Israel from him at Armageddon.

Micah 5:4-6 – And HE shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God; and they shall abide: for now shall HE be great unto the ends of the earth. [5] And THIS MAN shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men. [6] And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall HE deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our l and,

and when he treadeth within our borders. (See Archive Prophecy Updates 66 and 67)

During the Protestant Reformation, due to bitterness against the teachings of the Catholic Church, from whose teachings the Protestants had departed, it was quite common among the various groups to believe and teach that a pope of Rome would be the antichrist.

So it was only natural that some among them would use I Timothy 4:3 in conjunction with Daniel 11:37 to link the two Scriptures together, and make the antichrist one who was celibate and, as such, was guilty of issuing the proclamation to his priests “forbidding to marry.” But I do not think the two Scriptures can legitimately be linked to prove this point. The personage of Daniel 9:27 is not “forbidding to marry” – He has no regard for the desire of the women after they are married – He has no understanding of the role of a woman in God’s plan for marriage.

I Timothy 4:3 – Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

Daniel 11:37 – Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

He will not regard the desires of the God of Abraham, who was the God of his fathers until Mohammed spread the word that the God of Islam was to be Allah.

He will have no regard or understanding of the role of a woman’s desires in the plan of the true God’s desire in his established role of the woman in marriage.

Daniel 11:38 – But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and

with precious stones, and pleasant things.

He will only regard Allah, the God of forces, whom his fathers did not worship until Muhammad introduced them to Allah. Allah will lead Antichrist to take Egypt by force. He will honor Allah with the gold, silver, precious stones, and pleasant things of all his conquests.

Daniel 11:42,43 –He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. [43] But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

But at the end of his three and one-half year reign, no one will be able to help him, because Michael, will stand up for God’s chosen people, the nation of Israel, and it will be the end of the Antichrist and his false prophet.

‘Honor Killings’ of Women in Palestinian Society

Introduction

Although Palestinian society is known for its progressiveness, honor killings of women have not been eliminated. This paper will describe the problem and review the public discussion about it.

The precise statistics on honor killings of women in Palestinian society are not known, because not all incidents are reported to the authorities. According to Lamiya Shalalda, representative of the Forum of Palestinian Non-Governmental Organizations, 11 women died in 2009

in honor killings in the West Bank and Gaza. However, according to the Independent Authority for Human Rights, that number was 13.[1]

Jurists such as Zayyad Thabet, president of a Gaza court, said that since Hamas took charge of the Gaza judiciary system after its June 2007 coup, many cases of honor killing have never even made it to the courts.[2]

Some Cases of Honor Killing of Women

The following are excerpts from press reports on honor killings in the West Bank and Gaza, published in the Palestinian press.

“Najla A., a 24-year-old divorcee, was strangled by her brother, who was known for his religious fanaticism, when she was staying at his home…[3] Najla worked as a clerk at a Gaza business, and [due to her work] was absent from the home for many hours; this gave rise to many stories about her. Her brother, whose nickname was ‘The Sheikh,’ could not bear it. Once the murder was discovered, the police arrested him for questioning.

Family talks were then held, during which it was whispered in the ear of a senior police official that the matter concerned the family only, and that the woman had needed to be taught a lesson. Later, that police official received a gift – one of [Najla’s] brothers, a construction worker, laid 13 meters of flooring for him. The result was that [the killer] was released from prison without anyone batting an eyelid, and without any reaction from those who knew how badly Najla needed the work so that she could buy medicines for her sick mother.”[4]

In another incident, a father murdered his daughter Ahlam because she allegedly slept over at the houses of boys. “The social worker who was monitoring Ahlam’s situation, who asked to remain anonymous, said that Ahlam had complained to her about her family’s strictness and about her fear of her father, because he sexually abused her.” After the murder, the father said: “I told her that we were going out for shawarma. I drove her in the car, we had shawarma, and I played for her songs that she loved. She didn’t suspect me [of anything]. After we drove a while, I asked her to get out, and she hesitated. When she saw the knife in my hand, she asked, ‘Papa, why do you want to murder me?’… The father took advantage of the law that mitigates punishment in such a case, and was released from prison so he could enjoy the pleasures of life and forget the question asked by his daughter: ‘Why do you want to murder me?'”[5]

In another case, a mother strangled her teenage daughter, who she discovered had been raped by her uncle when she was little, in order to purge the shame. The uncle remained at liberty. Also, a young man murdered his unmarried sister when he observed that her abdomen had swelled and suspected that she was having sexual relations. Afterwards it turned out that she was a virgin and that her abdomen was swollen due to illness.[6]

Hamada, who is serving a prison sentence for murdering his sister, expressed no regret over his deed, and wasn’t interested in the pathologist’s report, which determined that his sister had been a virgin.

He said: “I turned myself in to the police and I don’t care if I’m sentenced even to life in prison, because I believe in what I did.” Hamada’s brother backed him up: “I didn’t know he would murder her, but after he did I wasn’t angry at him. None of us were. This is the natural outcome of her actions, which were known to everyone in the neighborhood.”[7]

Most Women Murdered In Honor Killings Are Innocent

In most cases, there was no proof that the murder victims had violated any moral code of Arab society – only that their families thought that their behavior was incompatible with the moral code and with accepted custom. Sometimes a mere rumor that a woman had spoken with a man was enough to seal her fate. In other cases, “honor killing” served as a pretext for murder for other reasons, such as a dispute, rivalry, or personal vendetta.

Samia Habib, a psychologist at the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, explained: “Sometimes it is a matter of inheritance… sometimes the father has committed deviant acts against his daughter and then murders her in a so-called ‘honor killing’ to cover up his crime… The woman is the weakest link. She is always guilty, even when she is a rape victim […] The issue of honor is a very sensitive one. The families do not call for help; you can’t reach them…”[8]

Palestinian Woman about Honor Killing Victim: “She Deserved to Die”

It is noteworthy that honor killings are condoned by many women.

In one of a series of workshops held in Khan Yunis on the role of the media in covering honor killings, in which 60 women participated, it became clear that all the women present believed that a sinning woman should be punished with death.

One woman, who wore traditional dress so modest that only part of one eye and eyebrow was visible, said of one of the victims: “She deserved… to die… She should be a lesson to other women.” When asked whether a man guilty of similar transgressions should be punished, she replied, after a brief silence, “It doesn’t matter, he’s a man.”[9]

Against Honor Killing

PA Official: There is Need for Diligent and Energetic Action over Many Decades

Najjah ‘Omar, director of the Department of Religious Law Studies in the office of the Shari’a Courts director, explained that the custom of honor killings was entrenched in society and would take years to eradicate: “The honor killing of a woman is one of the social traditions that has roots in the jahiliyya [i.e. pre-Islamic era]. It took root in the mind and conscience of society a very long time ago, and it cannot be expected to disappear so fast from the culture, with a one-year, two-year, or three-year campaign – or even a 10-year campaign. There is a need for diligent and energetic action over many decades.

“Social change is extremely slow – and change is even slower [on an issue] that everyone thinks is part of the religious commandments, even though in fact it has no connection whatsoever to the religion. A great deal of time is needed to correct this conception, and more time [is needed] to change it and to expunge it from the mind and the conscience – but it is vital that we do not give up, that we do not despair, and that we do not stop the campaigns of opposition to this negative phenomenon that causes such injustice […] Eventually the change will come, but we know that until then there will be many victims.”[10]

Leniency towards the Murderer Encourages Violence against Women

Clerics, jurists, media members, politicians, and social studies experts have expressed their dissatisfaction with the law as it exists today, as it mitigates punishment for the murderer under such circumstances. Mustafa Ibrahim, human rights activist in Gaza, stated that the lenience with which these crimes are treated, and the light sentences for those convicted of them, increase the number of honor killings of women in the Palestinian Authority. ‘Ahed Abu Sayf, legal advisor to the Interior Ministry of the Hamas government in Gaza, said, “The sentences in honor killing cases range from only six months to three years. The judge takes custom and tradition into account, along with the nature of the society and the emotional state of the accused…”

Attorney Nasser Al-Din Mihna said: “There are cases in which the court sentences the convicted man to probation, or settles for the time that he has already served in prison [while awaiting trial], if he is convinced that these are the motives that led to the crime.”[11]

Dr. Sa’id Abu Al-Jabin, member of the panel of judges on the Shari’a Appeals Court in Gaza, noted: “There should be no leniency for someone who committed premeditated murder of the woman… The state is the one that must judge the adulterer and the adulteress. In most social crimes today, [the murderer] does not surprise [the woman in the act] or fall victim to overwhelming passion – people [just] base [their actions] on rumors.

“Even if the woman admits [to the deed attributed to her], the man has no right to punish her. An authorized element must be permitted to implement the law and determine the nature of the punishment. No one must take the law into his own hands, because the [alleged] adulteress could have been a virgin after all.”[12]

Attorney Ashraf Jaber said that society does not understand the law very well: “There are some who murder a girl just because she spoke with a friend on the phone, or because she walked with a strange man.

They think that the law is lenient towards them, and that they don’t have to account for themselves because they carried out an honor killing. This is a misinterpretation of the law, and particularly of Section 340, which many understand to mean permission to murder regardless of the reasons if they claim that the background to the murder is a matter of honor.”[13]

Another aspect of the issue is discrimination against women. Dr. Hassan Al-Jojo, president of the Shari’a Appeals Court in Gaza, criticized PA criminal law, which is lenient vis-à-vis a husband who murders his wife in an honor killing, but not vis-à-vis a wife who murders her husband under similar circumstances.[14]

PA Leaders Support Changing the Law

The centrality of the issue of honor killings has not been ignored by the Palestinian Authority leaders. Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad said, “The Palestinian Authority has successfully ended the state of chaos, rebuilt the security institutions, consolidated its ability to institute the sovereignty of law and enforce public order. These achievements have, to some extent, reduced the violence and crime to which women are exposed, including the so-called honor killings. [However,] we still have a long way to go to eliminate violence against women, to gain respect for their lives and their status, and to ensure justice for them by fully upholding their rights.”[15]

Dr. Adnan Abu ‘Omar, legal advisor to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, attempted to reassure the women’s and human rights organizations. He explained that “according to the president’s guidelines, work is underway to change legislation such that it will be possible to protect women from honor killings and to treat such crimes as murder.”[16]

Palestinian Legislative Council member from Fatah Dr. Najat Abu Bakr said that the council was responsible for the rise in the number of women murdered in so-called honor killings. She said that she hoped to either head or to be a member of the PLC constitutional committee in order to change the law and the regulations and make sure they meet the needs.[17]

In an investigatory article, journalist Asma Al-Ghoul, who herself had been harassed by the Gaza modesty patrol, wrote: “For over a decade, women’s organizations have tried to pressure for change in Penal Law No. 74 of 1936, to introduce special sections on the issue of domestic violence, to which many women are victim, and to assure equality between women and men as set out in

the Palestinian Basic Law. In 2004, the PLC passed, on first reading, a proposed amendment for the Penal Law that the women’s movement thought would make it more just for women; however, broad sectors of society opposed the proposal and saw it as ‘violating the balance of customs in society.’ After the 2006 PLC elections, the women’s organizations very much hoped that the [amended] law [would be passed] and implemented, but the [Hamas-Fatah] schism [and in its aftermath] meant that the PLC did not convene, and prevented [this amendment from passing].”[18]

Clerics: Women Who “Fornicate” Must Be Punished, But Nobody May Take the Law into His Own Hands; The Root Problem Is Moral Licentiousness

Clerics who discussed the matter stressed that Islam requires sentencing for women who “fornicate,” but that no one had the right to take the law into his own hands and to murder women suspected of violating family honor.

Ihab Al-Ghasin, spokesman for the Interior Ministry in the Hamas government in Gaza, said that even those who collaborate with Israel must be tried – no one has the right to murder them.

Gaza Shari’a Appeals Court president Dr. Hassan Al-Jojo said that the family must “act with moderation and adopt preventative education, that is, monitoring the sons and the daughters, asking about lateness, and monitoring mistaken behaviors.”[19]

Islamic intellectual Sa’id Dwikat stated that “the reason for the crime of adultery, which causes honor crimes [i.e. killing], is moral licentiousness. There are no rules of behavior regarding watching satellite television broadcasts, and mobile phones can be misused. [Youngsters] keep evil company and dress sloppily, and many parents neglect their children’s upbringing. These are the causes of the disease [of moral licentiousness], and if they are taken care of, there will be no disease […]

“There is need for proper Muslim upbringing; real awareness among parents and also among children must be increased; limits must be set to the mixing [between the sexes]; and children must be constantly supervised.

Parents must be close to their children and listen to them, so that they know what their problems are and can respond to their needs – so that these children will not run away from their problems by engaging in forbidden behavior.”[20]
