We must now face an extremely unpleasant truth: Even giving the Obama administration every possible break regarding its Iran policy, it is now clear that the US government isn’t going to take strong action on the nuclear weapons issue. Note that I didn’t even say “effective” action. I’m saying that it isn’t even going to make a good show of trying seriously to do anything.

Some say that the administration has secretly or implicitly accepted the idea that Iran will get nuclear weapons and is now seeking some longer-term containment policy. I doubt that has happened. It is just not even this close to reality.

From its behavior, it still seems to expect, incredibly, that some kind of deal is possible with Teheran despite everything that has happened. Then, too, it may hope that the opposition – unaided by America – will overthrow the Iranian government and thus solve the problem. And it is too fixated on short-term games about seeking consensus among other powers; two of them – China and Russia – are clearly not going to agree to anything serious.

This fact was clear many months ago, but the administration still doesn’t recognize it.

Not only is the Obama administration failing the test but it is doing so in a way that seems to maximize the loss of US credibility in the region and the world.

A lot of this comes from the administration’s philosophy of unprecedented concepts of guilt, apology, defeatism and refusal to take leadership never seen before among past liberal Democratic governments from Franklin Roosevelt to Bill Clinton.

Yet the British, French and Germans are ready to get tough on Iran, yearning for leadership and not getting it.

All of this is watered down in media coverage, focused on day-to-day developments and swallowing many of the administration’s excuses plus its endlessly repeated rhetoric that action is on the way. When the history of this absurdly failed effort is written, the story will be a shocking one.

IT WAS totally predictable that the Iranian government would not make a deal. It was totally predictable that Russia and China weren’t going to go along with tougher sanctions.

It was totally predictable that a failure by the US to take the leadership on the matter and instead depend on consensus would lead to paralysis. And it is totally predictable that a bungled diplomatic effort will produce an even more aggressive Iranian policy along with crisis and violence.

First, the administration set a September deadline for instituting increased sanctions and then, instead of following a two-track strategy of engagement alongside pressure, postponed doing anything while in talks with Iran.

Second, it refused to take advantage of the regime’s international unpopularity and growing opposition demonstrations due to the alleged rigged June election for the presidency.

On the contrary, it assured the Iranian regime it would not do so.

Third, the administration set a December deadline should engagement fail, then refused to recognize it had failed and did nothing. It is the failure even to try to meet this time limit by implementing some credible action that has crossed the line, triggered the point of no return.

Fourth, the US government kept pretending that it was somehow convincing the Chinese and Russians to participate, while there was never any chance of this happening.

Indeed, this was clear from statements repeatedly made by leaders of both countries. Now, this duo has sabotaged the process without any cost inflicted by the US while making clear they will continue doing so.

Fifth, high-ranking US officials still speak of their continued eagerness to engage Iran and mention at least six months more of discussion efforts before anything is done about sanctions.

Sixth, the administration now defines sanctions as overwhelmingly focused on the Revolutionary Guards, who it cannot hurt economically, thus signaling to the Iranian regime that it will do nothing effective to hurt the country’s economy. This means that even if and when sanctions are increased, they will be toothless.

All of these steps tell Iran’s regime: full speed ahead on building nuclear weapons; repress your opponents brutally and the US will do nothing.

After these six failures, the US is now – in effect – resting. And that is the seventh failure. There are no signs that anything is changing in Washington.

To believe that the administration has learned anything, we would have to see the following: An angry US government which feels that Iran’s regime made it look foolish; a calculating administration that believes the American people want it to get tough and gain politically from being seen as decisive; a great power strategy that would make an example of Iran to show what happens to a bunch of repressive dictators who defy the US and spit on its friends and interests; and a diplomatically astute government that understands the uses of threats and pressure to force its opponent into a compromise.

There is not the slightest indication that the Obama administration holds any of these views.

On the contrary, without any apparent realization of the absurdity of the situation, high-ranking officials keep repeating in January 2010 as in January 2009 that, some day, the US might do something to put pressure on Iran. Perhaps those in the administration who do understand what’s wrong don’t have the influence to affect the policy being set in the White House.

This is going to be a case study of how failing to deal with a problem sooner, even if that requires some diplomatic confrontations, will lead to a much bigger and costlier conflict later involving military confrontations.

Obama has made his own personality and identity cornerstones

For those worried that US President Barack Obama is particularly antagonistic toward Israel, there’s good news and bad news: The good news is that Israel is hardly Obama’s obsession; the bad news is that his administration’s conduct toward it is consistent with its pattern of backing away from embattled American allies – a predictable byproduct of Obama’s approach to foreign policy through dictator outreach.

Obama, more than any recent president, has made his own personality and identity cornerstones of American diplomacy. He assumes his potent charm can bend America’ s adver

saries his way, that American history began anew on January 20, 2009 and that hostilities can be resolved through dialogue with him. His tactic of choice has been to visit a troubled region, apologize to the local authoritarians for America’s sinful pre-Obama history, disavow acts of previous administrations and suggest that he brings with him a diplomatic “reset-button.”

But there are dangerous repercussions to conducting such personality-focused foreign policy: By promoting his unique diplomatic touch as the key to rapprochement, any failure by Obama to harmonize hostile relationships indicates the insufficiency of his skills.

Accordingly, in practice, hostile governments have learned that Obama sets lofty diplomatic goals in public, but is willing to cut almost any deal to keep up appearances. He has made countless concessions and conciliatory gestures to Iran, the Arab world, China, Russia and Venezuela, vainly urging some demonstration of good faith in return. Yet time and again, seeing no downside, America’s adversaries simply pocket the concessions without reciprocating.

Refusing to concede any error, Obama has instead doubled his diplomatic bets, paying in the currency preferred by the hostile regimes: by jettisoning the interests of US allies who are thorns in their sides.

Obama has vocally criticized Israeli security policy, coerced a settlement freeze and put the status of established Jerusalem neighborhoods in question. Yet the Arab governments and Palestinian leadership keep moving the diplomatic goalposts, making no concessions, knowing he will only increase pressure on Israel to restart the “peace process.”

Obama’s one-sided pressure against Israel has earned him, according to a Jerusalem Post poll published in June, the assessment of only 6 percent of Jewish Israelis that his administration is pro-Israel.

But it’s not just Israel. In April he praised “the Czech Republic and Poland, [who] have been courageous in agreeing to host” a missile-defense system, promising deployment “as long as the threat from Iran persists.” By July, though the threat from Iran certainly persisted, Obama caved in to Russian objections, abandoning the missile-shield along with those courageous Czechs and Poles.

In Honduras, his administration backed the reinstatement of a power-usurping, Chavez-allied anti-American president in spite of the legal democratic process which had removed him.

In Iran, Obama still talks of engaging the mullahs and slowing down sanctions even as the theo-fascists thumb their noses, ramping up their nuclear capability and mowing down democratic protesters holding signs saying “Obama, are you with us or against us?”

From China, Obama had high hopes for progress on human rights and cooperation regarding Iran and North Korea. He got nothing, save for an ironic lecture on fiscal responsibility from the communist government.

Is there a threatened ally he has ever stood up for? If I were Taiwan, I’d be worried.

OBAMA TRULY believes in his special persuasive powers. “I have a gift,” he is famously reported to have said to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

During the campaign, the crux of his foreign policy was his eagerness to immediately meet the world’s most brutal dictators and enemies of America, without preconditions; he would personally make them less antagonistic. He wants to hold a Muslim summit, since “I have lived in a Muslim country” [as a schoolboy], “I know it is possible to reconcile Islam with modernity and respect for human rights and a rejection of violence.”

Well, that’s a relief.

Obama’s belief in his own powers was reinforced by a love-struck press. After his vaguely messianic campaign and inauguration, Newsweek’s Evan Thomas typified the mood, hyperventilating that Obama was “standing above the country… above the world. He’s sort of God.” But once president, reality intruded: The leaders of Russia, China and North Korea don’t believe in God. And the Islamist God is somewhat less warm and fuzzy than Barack Obama.

With nothing to show for his efforts, Obama’s continued belief in his ability to pacify adversaries by personal appeal is as delusional as it is dangerous. Nations don’t have personal friends; they have interests. And American interests are not advanced by presidential groveling, but by creating the right mix of carrots and sticks to induce desired behavior.

Obama’s willingness to sacrifice embattled allies

to appease hostile regimes ultimately weakens America. As Bernard Lewis has said: “A nation can make few mistakes worse than this: to be harmless as an enemy and treacherous as a friend.”

Especially when that nation gets nothing in return.

Merkel: Sanctions will be a tragedy for the Iranian people

German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Iran Monday evening that it may face new sanctions if it doesn’t cooperate with the West over its nuclear program.

Merkel told diplomats in Berlin that “time is running out” for Iran. She said additional sanctions would be a “tragedy for the Iranian people.”

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman told Brazilian Defense Minister Nelson Jobim that it was evident that “Iran, which has large stocks of gas and oil, is not developing a nuclear capability for peaceful purposes.” Lieberman said the missiles Iran was developing were not intended to spread nuclear energy for the good of mankind.

Lieberman told his Brazilian colleague that Iran was the world’s number one sponsor of terrorism, ruled by a government that denies the Holocaust and Israel’s right to exist. He also referred to the regime’s crackdown on opposition activists, saying “we have seen how the Iranians took care of civilians after the elections [there].”

Lieberman and Merkel made their comments just hours after Der Spiegel reported that new intelligence acquired by Germany’s BND conclusively shows that Iran’s nuclear program has an advanced military offshoot which answers to the country’s defense establishment.

The report said the information was being reviewed in Germany, Israel, the US and the UN’s nuclear agency in Vienna.

Aside from exposing the ex istence of a clandestine weapons development program, the document apparently shows that Teheran

is in possession of advanced blueprints for producing a nuclear bomb.

Such documents, as well as information passed on to Western intelligence agencies by Iranian defec

tors and sources within Iran, are causing growing alarm among US and European leaders.

In its report, Der Spiegel assessed that the White House may consequently raise threat levels from yellow to red.

World leaders and even the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said the newspaper, are beginning to understand that rumors of Iranian defiance, noncompliance and warmongering are neither Israeli propaganda nor a figment of the imagination.

The intelligence document raises questions pertinent to the nature of Iran’s nuclear program, which the Islamic republic claims is meant solely for peaceful energy production in a climate of dwindling natural resources, including oil.

However, its evasive tactics, spiteful rhe toric and lack of transparency with Western bodies looking

to halt the spread of nuclear weapons have caused world leaders to be concerned – and increasingly skeptical.

Reports which have surfaced in recent years hint that Iran’s National Energy Council may not be the only body to which its nuclear scientists answer. In fact, according to Der Spiegel, Iranian Science, Research and Technology Minister Kamran Daneshjoo – a close ally of the country’s hard-line president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad – worked for several years at a Teheran research and development center devoted to military technology.

This government-sponsored scientific body is believed by Western intelligence agencies to have become subservient to Iran’s defense ministry. Vague estimates state that the body, headed by 48-year-old Revolutionary Guard officer Mohsen Fahrizadeh, now deals in “high technology” in a manner that differs greatly from that of the country’s energy council.

Der Spiegel suggested that the two bodies divide the labor of nuclear research and development between them, with the energy council focusing on uranium enrichment – the production of what could potentially evolve into fissile warhead material – and the defense ministry responsible for research on warheads compatible with Iran’s North Korean-developed Shahab ballistic missile line.

As such, the Islamic republic may be able to produce a crude nuclear bomb – too large to be attached to any missile – by the end of this year, with estimates citing 2012 or 2014 as a target date for a fully functional warhead.

Also on Monday, France pushed for tougher sanctions against Iran just as Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini called for greater involvement by Arab countries in international efforts to defuse the nuclear threat from Teheran.

China and Russia, though still unpredictable, are likely to agree to sanctions not targeted at the Iranian economy.

France will serve as the European Council’s rotating president starting February.

US President Barack Obama has set January as a deadline for Iran to respond to diplomatic outreach. Western states, along with the UN, China and Russia, are still awaiting Teheran’s final official response on a proposal which calls for the Islamic republic to ship a significant percentage of its low-enriched uranium abroad in exchange for a similar quantity of nuclear fuel.

Saudi Princess: The Shi’ites Injected Pagan Customs into Islam

Against the backdrop of the ongoing tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and between Sunnis and Shi’ites throughout the Middle East, Saudi Princess Basma bint Sa’ud bin ‘Abd Al-‘Aziz wrote an article in the Saudi daily Al-Madina, in which she condemned the rites performed by the Shi’ites on the Day of ‘Ashura, calling them “pagan.”

Following are excerpts:[1]

The Shi’ite ‘Ashura Rituals Are “Among the Ugliest and Most Primitive Pagan Rites Banned by the Prophet”

“‘Allah, bless our master Muhammad, his family and all his companions.’ That is what we [Muslims utter] after every prayer, every [quote from the] Sunna, and every [performance of a religious] commandment. However, every year for the last few centuries, [some] Muslims have been [doing things] that are at odds with this.

“The Sunnis mark the Day of ‘Ashura by fasting, in accordance with the teachings of their Prophet.

They [mark] this holy month [of Muharram] by fasting, and by benefiting from the merit and internalizing the lesson of [this month]. In contrast, we see our brothers in some of the other Islamic sects [i.e. the Shi’ites, marking the Day of ‘Ashura by] running around hysterically while screaming and shouting, as though they do not know that Allah commanded [us] to keep our voices down, even while praying…

“We Muslims regard the martyrdom of Hussein [son of ‘Ali], may he rest in peace, as a tale that holds a lesson for us and for all generations – past, present and future. But his story and his teachings, and those of his grandfather the Prophet [Muhammad] and his entire family, are far removed from the deeds of some [Muslims] whom we see on television, in the press and in nauseating images on the Internet, and from [the behavior of these Muslims] on the Day [of ‘Ashura], which is supposed to be a day of humility, calm, reflection, fasting, [performance of] duties, and taking of lessons from the injustice and aggression that were suffered by [Hussein and his family] at the end of their lives…

“These [Shi’ite] disciples take to the streets by the thousands and scour [their own flesh] with chains and sticks.

They spill their own blood in the name of [Hussein] – the Martyr of Islam, the grandson of the Prophet and the Master of the Youth of Paradise – whose teachings made no mention of these despicable customs of [self-] flagellation. [In fact, these customs] are among the ugliest and most primitive pagan rites banned by the Prophet.

“Thanks to the sound nature with which God has endowed us, and from our reading of the Sunna and of the history of the Prophet’s family, we know that these rites are all pagan customs that were injected into Islam, [and which are] like a sword that divides our ranks, our teachings, our identity and our beliefs… so that we cease to be one nation, as our Prophet commanded us, and do not live in peace, which is at the heart of Islam…”

“At a Time When Our Prophet is Cursed and Attacked [by Westerners]… [The Shi’ites Are] Preoccupied with Bemoaning the Fate of His Grandson”

“Doesn’t our natural inclination induce us to adhere to the teachings of the Prophet, to the Koran and to the Sunna, [instead of following] those who betrayed the faith, deified ‘Ali and his sons, and cursed the companions of the Prophet?…

“At a time when our Prophet is cursed and attacked [by Westerners], and films insulting him are distributed, [we see] our brothers in some of the [other Islamic] schools [i.e. the Shi’ites] preoccupied with bemoaning the fate of his grandson. They have forgotten that the Prophet is the core!

“Hussein’s [last] will was for [all of us] to adhere to the teachings of his grandfather. The enemies of Islam [i.e., the Shi’ites] were sowed among us centuries ago, and they divided our ranks and permitted what is forbidden – and all this in the name of the Prophet’s family.

“[The Prophet] Muhammad bin ‘Abdallah and his family are innocent of all the blood that has been spilled in their name, and of all the forbidden innovations that were ascribed to their teachings. Isn’t it time to wake up and repent?

“Let us unite and defend our Prophet in the face of the [non-Muslim] enemy. [Let us] support him in word, deed, thought and by following his Sunna. Let us avoid playing into the hands of those who wish to divide and weaken us so that our voice is not heard and we do not unite into a force that will awe the world. [Let us not play into the hands of those who prefer it if] nobody respects our opinion, our religion, and our Prophet.”

Israel plays down talk of attacking Lebanon

Commander says recent saber rattling from both sides was nothing but ‘virtual escalation’

BEIRUT: A senior Israeli military commander denied on Sunday that constant talk of conflict with Lebanon was raising tensions between the two countries, 24 hours after an Israeli minister said war was “a matter of time.” Major General Gadi Eizenkot of the northern command told Israeli media at a conference in Tel Aviv that recent saber rattling from either side of the Blue Line was nothing but a “virtual escalation” which had no basis in fact.

“[Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan] Nasrallah would be happy to return to the days prior to July 2006, before the Second Lebanon War, when everything was intact. [Hizbullah] hasn’t executed an attack since the Second Lebanon War,” Eizenkot said.

“But Hizbullah is getting stronger and we are preparing for all options in order to be able to act effectively.”

He added that Hizbullah had increased its arsenal of rockets dramatically since 2006 and that any Israeli response to an attack from the group would be “disproportionate.”

Eizenkot’s comments come a day after Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu was forced to play down remarks from one of his senior officials who announced that another war with Lebanon was unavoidable.

Yossi Peled, a minister in Netanyahu’s ruling Likud party, speaking at an event in the northern Israeli village of Beersheba Saturday, said that a conflict with Hizbullah along the Blue Line would happen sooner or later.

“Lebanon is the only country in the world that has a military organization – Hizbullah – that doesn’t answer to the government and is supported by two external states, Iran and Syria,” Peled told reporters.

“In my estimation, understanding and knowledge, it is almost clear to me that it is a matter of time before there is a military clash in the north … but I don’t know when it will happen, just as we did not know when the Second Lebanon War would erupt,” the reserve army general added, in reference to the 2006 summer war which killed more than 1,200 Lebanese, mainly civilians.

Netanyahu issued a statement later Saturday in response to Peled’s comments, in which the Israeli premier refuted talk of imminent conflict.

“Israel does not wish at all to have a confrontation with Lebanon,” Netanyahu said, adding that Israel sought “peace with Lebanon and with all its neighbors.”

Peled said that the international community had failed to “manage Hizbullah” and that the group was now more powerful than in 2006.

“Although Hizbullah is part of the Lebanese government, the latter has no influence on it,” he added. “If there is another confrontation in the north, we will hold Syria and Lebanon alike responsible.”

The conflicting remarks from Israeli officials were delivered following a spate of newspaper reports alleging that Hizbullah had diversified its areas of operation within Lebanon.

The Washington Post, quoting Israeli military sources, wrote that the group now had weapons stockpiles across swathes of northern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, outside of the operational mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

General Aharon Zeevi Farkash, the former head of the Israeli Army Intelligence unit, told the newspaper that Hizbullah had “learned [its] lesson” from 2006, adding that “the ‘border’ is now the Litani River.”

The pan-Arab Ash-Sharq al-Awsat reported that the Israeli Army undertook military maneuvers along the UN-demarcated Blue Line, causing Hizbullah members in the south to be placed on high alert.

When contacted by The Daily Star, a spokesperson for the group said that Hizbullah was ready to face any aggression from Israel.

Hizbullah’s military commander in the south, Nabil Qawouk, said on Saturday that Israel was fearful of retribution ahead of the anniversary of the assassination of the group’s former military head Imad Mughniyeh, who was killed in a Damascus car bomb attack in 2008.

“The enemy knows that the blood of the martyr Mughniyeh will continue to flow until [our enemy’s] great defeat,” Qawouk said, adding that Israeli action against the group could have far-reaching regional consequences.

Hizbullah blames Israel for Mughniyeh’s death, though Israel denies involvement.

Earlier this month, an unsuccessful bomb attack on Israeli diplomats travelling in Jordan was blamed on Hizbullah by investigators from Tel Aviv. – With Agencies

It looks like a hop, skip and a jump. There’s the first electrified fence, then the dirt strip to identify footprints, then the tarmac road, then one more electrified fence, and then acres and acres of trees. Orchards rather than tanks. Galilee spreads beyond, soft and moist and dark green in the winter afternoon – a peaceful Israel, you might think. And a peaceful Lebanon to the north, tobacco plantations amid the stony hills, just an occasional UN armoured vehicle to keep you on your toes. “Major Pardin says you cannot take pictures,” a Malaysian UN soldier tells me.

Then a second one says the same. Then along comes

a Lebanese army intelligence officer and stares at our papers. “OK, you have permission,” he declares, and I snap away with my old 36-frame real-film Nikon; the fields, the frontier fence, the high-tech surveillance tower on the horizon. This must be the most photographed border in the world.

Of course, the gentle countryside is an illusion.

Benjamin Netanyahu and his colleagues in the Israeli government have been announcing that the only “army” of Lebanon is the Hizbollah, the Irani

an-armed and Syrian-assisted guerrilla force whose bunkers and missiles north of the Litani river might just tip the balance in the next Hizbollah-Israeli war. And Sayed Hassan Nasrallah, the chairman of the Hizbollah, has been making some even more interesting threats: that his forces will “change the face of the Middle East region” if there is another war with Israel. No-one is in much doubt about what this means. The newly resurfaced Lebanese roads near the border – courtesy of Hizbollah money – suggest that someone might want to move men at high speed towards the frontier. Perhaps even to cross the border.

That’s what the Israelis suspect, too – and it makes sense of Nasrallah’s warning last week.

The Hizbollah claimed that the 2006 war with Israel was a “divine victory” – it didn’t feel that way to us in southern Lebanon at the time – yet even Israel admits it was a near-defeat for its own ill-trained soldiers. But how would Israel react if the Hizbollah managed to enter Israel itself

? Israeli army commanders are talking about this in the Israeli press. A fast, dramatic spring across the frontier to the west – in the direction of Naharia, perhaps, or a grab at the settlement of Kiryat Shmona – and Hizbollah would announce it had “liberated” part of historic “Palestine”. Israel would have to bomb its own terri

tory to get them out.

This is no game. The Israeli army wants to revenge itself on the Hizbollah, which humiliated it in 2006. Nasrallah – on giant-wide screens, for security reasons – often talks as if he’s the Lebanese president.

Did the Israelis really think al-Qa’ida or the Hizbollah were beind the attempted killing of two Jordanian diplomats between Amman and the Allenby bridge, Nasrallah asked. No friend of al-Qa’ida, Hizbollah would have succeeded in blowing them up if it had been involved.

The crowd roared its agreement.

But the threats continue. The Israeli defence minister, Ehud Barak, says that the Lebanese government will be held responsible for any future war and the Lebanese have had the usual warnings from Israel. Lebanon’s infrastructure will be attacked, its bridges and highways destroyed, its villages erased. Israel, Mr Barak has been saying, was restrained in 2006 – when it attacked Lebanon’s infrastructure, destroyed its bridges and highways and erased its villages. Plus ça change.

But there’s a good deal of “change”. Syria is being courted by the Obama administration. Its old allies in Lebanon – Druze leader Walid Jumblatt among them – are uttering honeyed words to Damascus. Indeed, Jumblatt has been meeting both Nasrallah and his old enemy Michel Aoun, and concluding that he is three-quarters of the way down the road to Damascus. And President Assad of Syria has been visiting Tehran again, to assure the Islamic Republic of his ever-loyal support.

You can see the way everyone is thinking. And here’s the big question, the camel in the room. If Israel ignores Obama and attacks Iran’s nuclear sites – a real aggression if ever there could be – the Hizbollah could fire rockets into Israel, perhaps even revealing its new anti-aircraft missile capacity. Hamas might join in from Gaza. Hamas is a tin-pot outfit; the Hizbollah is not. An Israeli attack on Iran will unleash Iranian military power against America. But part of that power is Hizbollah in Lebanon.

This is serious business.

Over Christmas, a parcel “from a foreign country” was delivered to three Hamas officials in Beirut and blew up, killing all of them.

Last week, a bomb exploded in a building in southern Lebanon owned by two Hizbollah officials, wounding three children. One of them, 11-year-old Diana Zreik, had her left leg amputated. It looks like a glance at the past, to the 1970s, when Israel posted letter-bombs to its enemies in Lebanon.

The United Nations has been complaining at the increase in Israel’s overflights of Lebanese territory. The Lebanese army has been opening fire on Israeli aircraft flying over the border – useless, of course, because the Americans don’t give the Lebanese army weapons that can hurt Israel – while US Senator John McCain has dropped by in Beirut to complain about the Hizbollah’s weapons which, under UN Security Council Resolution 1701, are supposed to be in the hands of the Lebanese army. This is the same resolution that should prevent Israeli overflights.

And what do those overflights show

? “We see Hizbollah expanding inside Lebanon and its growing influence, political and otherwise,” Barak said last week. “We again wish to make clear to the Lebanese leadership that we see everything, and we will hold the parties which cause increased tension responsible… the situation can quickly deteriorate.” Thank you, Israel. Especially if Israel attacks Iran.

Party of God: Hizbollah and the politics of Islamic resistance

Hizbollah, which can be translated as Party of God, is a Lebanese, Iranian and Syrian-backed, Shia Islamist political movement with a paramilitary wing known as “Islamic Resistance”. It emerged in 1982 as a small militia force with the aim of ending Israel’s occupation of southern Lebanon.

The movement is now a major player in Lebanese politics with its own satellite TV network, a radio station, and a vast network of social programmes from housing to agriculture. According to Hizbollah’s manifesto, the Lebanese people must be free to choose what form of government they want, but they are strongly encouraged to pick the option of Islamic government. The movement’s original goal of turning Lebanon into an Islamic Republic has been abandoned.

Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah became Hizbollah’s Secretary General in 1992. A popular and charismatic figure, his face appears from billboards and hoardings across Beirut and south Lebanon. The deeply religious 49-year-old studied theology in Iran and is noted for his fiery sermons, excerpts of which are sometimes heard on mobile phone ringtones.

Israel tried to kill Nasrallah during the month-long war it fought against Hizbollah in 2006. The conflict followed a Hizbollah attack on an Israeli army convoy patrolling the border with south Lebanon. Nasrallah now says Hizbollah will defeat Israel in any new conflict. “I promise you that should a new war with the Zionists erupt, we will crush the enemy, come out victorious and change the face of the region,” he said last week.
