The two major factors that have prevented a major Middle East war up to this time are: (1) the presence of large clusters of foreign troops in the Middle East within striking distance of Iran and Syria, and (2) Iran’s fear of Israel launching her huge volume of nuclear missiles at her. When our troops are removed and when Iran believes it has a sufficient number of mounted warheads to deter Israel from the launching of warheads at her, then the final war of the king of the south against the king of the north will begin.

I realize it is God who controls when this war will begin! But God uses men, nations and circumstances to suit his own purposes. And it certainly appears God is moving all things into place to fulfill his prophecies by his own power and design.

Daniel 11:40 – And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

Rivalries in Iraq Keep G.I.’s in the Field

MOSUL, Iraq — A string of checkpoints has appeared on the roads that spoke out from this volatile city, guarded by hundreds of American soldiers

working with Arab and Kurdish troops.

The joint operation along one of Iraq’s ethnic trouble spots began with a deliberate lack of fanfare, but it constitutes the most significant military mission by American forces since they largely retreated to bases outside Iraq’s cities in June.

More than two dozen checkpoints now punctuate a snaking line that traces — from Syria to Iran — the unofficial and disputed boundary between Iraq’s federal forces and those of the Kurdish regional government. At times these forces have operated virtually as opposing armies rather than as compatriots, but at the checkpoints they now live and operate together for the first time since the war began.

Guarding checkpoints — a task the American military never relishes — invites attacks by insurgents, who remain particularly active in northern Iraq.

On three consecutive nights recently, rockets or mortars landed near three checkpoints in Diyala Province, though they caused no casualties, according to an American military spokesman and an Iraqi military official. “You stay static,” said First Sgt. Tony DelSardo of the Army’s Third Infantry Division, “you’ll get hit.”

The operation began this month after labored negotiations with Iraq’s Arab and Kurdish leaders. The immediate goal is to bolster security ahead of bitterly contested elections in March along an ethnic patchwork of lands devastated by attacks.

The ultimate strategy is to defuse political tensions along a fault line that could easily rupture, sundering the country once American forces leave, or even before. The operation underscores the extent to which the American military remains an arbiter of Iraq’s most intractable conflicts.

“What we’re doing is forcing the wound to close,” Lt. Col. Christopher L. Connelly, a battalion commander with the First Armored Division, said at a checkpoint being erected on the highway that links Mosul to Erbil, the Kurdish region’s capital.

With time running out before President Obama’s deadline for withdrawing combat troops in August, the mission has become the most urgent in Iraq.

The American commander in Iraq, Gen.

Ray Odierno, proposed the checkpoints, along with joint patrols involving the three sides, after a series of incidents last year threatened open conflict between Iraqi and Kurdish forces. Its inception stalled for months amid deeply rooted suspicions between Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki and the Kurdish president, Massoud Barzani.

“What we have sought to do is separate the politics from the security piece, and of course, that’s very hard to do,” said Lt. Gen. Charles H. Jacoby Jr., the deputy commander in Iraq. “But we keep bringing it back to focusing on: O.K., where and how do we provide the best security to the Iraqi people? And how does that create the environment that will someday allow for political process to take place?”

This northern front, or “trigger line,” dates from the American invasion in 2003. As Saddam Hussein’s army collapsed, Kurdish forces called the pesh merga pushed from their three provinces in the north and occupied sections of Nineveh, Kirkuk and Diyala Provinces that the Kurds had historically claimed.

They have controlled the areas ever since, despite calls by Iraq’s government and regional Sunni leaders for them to withdraw to the “green line” that established the internal Kurdish boundary before 2003.

As Iraq’s new security forces have grown more assertive in controlling territory on the southern side, the effect has been to square off two suspicious forces along a seam that has been exploited by Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia and other insurgents for attacks, and by politicians for political points.

Last May, the pesh merga prevented Nineveh’s newly elected governor of Nineveh, a Sunni, from crossing the line to drive to Bashiqa, a town nominally under his authority. The facts of the incident were disputed, but all agreed that violence was only narrowly averted.

Since then, a series of hair-trigger confrontations has raised tensions. So have bombings in villages that were aimed at small ethnic communities along the line populated by Assyrian Christians, Turkmens and Shabaks. Insurgents struck with such precision between the two opposing authorities that American and Iraqi officials suspect the attacks were an effort to provoke an Arab-Kurd war.

Political leaders in Diyala, Kirkuk and Nineveh have condemned the new operation, seeing the checkpoints as de facto recognition of Kurdish territorial claims.

While many Kurds serve in the Iraqi Army, the pesh merga operate under the command of the Kurdish government; their presence, and that of the Kurdish intelligence service, are viewed by many Iraqis as illegitimate.

“What guarantees are there that the pesh merga will ever withdraw?” Qusay Abbas, a member of Nineveh’s regional legislature, which has opposed the operation, said at his home near one of the new checkpoints. Last week, he said, Kurdish soldiers detained and threatened him when he tried to visit a mosque in a neighboring village.

American commanders have emphasized that the checkpoints are not meant to preclude negotiations between Arabs and Kurds over the final internal boundaries of the Kurdish region, though the hope is that cooperation on the ground will give momentum to a political — and peaceful — resolution of the underlying dispute.

The duration of the operations remains unclear. Ultimately the Americans hope to withdraw. For now, American platoons hunker down with their Iraqi and Kurdish counterparts in primitive camps beside the checkpoints.

Joint patrols have begun to ensure security in the immediate area. More expansive patrols remain the subject of negotiations.

At one checkpoint on the road to Bashiqa, near where the governor was stopped, there is a small sign of progress. Until last week, the Arabs and the Kurds maintained separate checkpoints.

Now platoons from both forces, along with the Americans, have consolidated into a single base, flying the Iraqi and Kurdish flags.

They still maintain separate command posts, but the American platoon leader, Lt. Cody R. Schuette, is trying to find a tent or trailer to serve as a single one.

Meanwhile, at Forward Operating Base Marez, on the edge of Mosul, the Americans have been conducting four-day courses for the new platoons. The program forces Iraqi and pesh merga troops together in courses, in temporary barracks and in the chow line.

Staff Col. Avdo Fathi, deputy commander of Iraq’s Third Army Division, said training and operating together would “break a lot of the emotional obstacles” between the Arabs and Kurds. “I don’t want to talk about politics,” he said. “We are soldiers. The security forces — the army and the pesh merga — represent one country.”

Timeline: Afghanistan in crisis

1979: The then Soviet Union invades Afghanistan. In the years that follow Moscow will rule Kabul by proxy while the US, Pakistan, China, Iran and Saudi Arabia extend their support to anti-communist Muslim fighters, the Mujahideen, who oppose the Soviets.

1988–1989: The Soviet Union withdraws. More than 15,000 Soviet soldiers have died in the conflict.

1992: Led by Ahmed Shah Massoud, Mujahideen forces remove the Soviet-backed government, but in the years that follow rivalry between different groups of fighters reduce Kabul to rubble and effectively plunge Afghanistan into civil conflict.

1994: Mullah Mohammed Omar, a Muslim cleric, sets up Taliban movement of Islamic students who take up arms to end the chaos in Afghanistan. They capture Kandahar and advance on Kabul.

1996: The Taliban takes Kabul and hangs Mohammad Najibullah, the then president. The year also sees the return to Afghanistan of Osama bin Laden, al-Qaeda’s leader who fought with Mujahideen groups against the Soviet occupation.

1998: The US launches missiles at suspected bin Laden bases in the country in retaliation for the bombing of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

1999: The UN imposes an air embargo and freezes Taliban assets in an attempt to force them to hand over bin Laden for trial.

2001: Taliban rule in Afghanistan, based on their strict interpretation of Sharia, or Islamic law, has become increasingly proscriptive, restricting women and religious minorities, banning satellite TV and destroying some 2,000-year-old Buddhist statues in the cliffs above Bamiyan.

In September, the Taliban’s rival Ahmed Shah Massoud, a senior commander of the so-called Northern Alliance, is wounded in a suicide attack and later dies of h

Attacks on the United States on September 11 leads George Bush, then US president, to demand the Taliban hand over bin Laden. They refuse unless evidence of his involvement is presented.

In October, US and British forces begin bombing Afghanistan and within weeks mount an invasion.

Later Hamid Karzai, an Afghan tribal leader, will be chosen to head an interim administration.

2002: The first contingent of international peacekeeping forces takes up its duties. Months later Haji Abdul Qadir, the Afghan vice-president, is assassinated in Kabul. Karzai escapes a separate assassination attempt in his hometown of Kandahar.

2003: Despite frequent incidents of violence, Donald Rumsfeld, then US defence secretary, claims that most of Afghanistan is secure and that US-led forces had moved from major combat operations to stabilisation and reconstruction projects.

The year also sees Nato take control of security in Kabul.

It is the organisation’s first security operation outside of Europe.

2004: Afghanistan adopts a new constitution and Karzai is elected president. Meanwhile, the Taliban begins to regroup and mounts a sustained campaign of attacks.

2005: Afghanistan holds it first parliamentary elections in more than 30 years, but Taliban attacks continue to grow in intensity.

2006: Western forces and their Afghan allies mount Operation Mountain Thrust against Taliban fighters. Scores die in the fighting.

Later in the year, Nato takes over responsibility for security across the country. Meanwhile, civilian casualties have been mounting and when a US military vehicle crashes, killing several civilians, widespread anti-US protests erupt.

2007: Nato and Afghan forces launch Operation Achilles, reported as their largest offensive to date and in May Mullah Dadullah, the Taliban’s chief military commander, is killed. The UN reports opium production in Afghanistan, much of which is thought to fund the Taliban, has reached record levels.

2008: A Taliban operation frees hundreds of its fighters from Kandahar prison. Weeks later a suicide attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul ramps up regional tensions as India accuses the Pakistani intelligence agency of involvement. Pakistan denies the allegations.

Towards the end of the year, US President Bush sends and additional 4,500 US troops to Afghanistan. Germany also boosts its troop numbers and extends its mission in the country.

2009: The election of Barack Obama, the US president, had prompted hopes of a new approach to Afghanistan, but Taliban attacks make the year the bloodiest yet for international troops.

Meanwhile, Afghans go to the polls to elect a new president and while the Taliban largely fails to act on its threats to attack voters, the election is beset by massive fraud. Karzai wins a runoff vote after Abdullah Abdullah, his main rival, withdraws.

In December, Obama agrees to a request by his generals to boost US troop levels in Afghanistan. He supplies 30,000 troops, bringing the total number of US troops in the country to 100,000, but he also announces that the US will begin withdrawing its forces by 2011.

2010: While Karzai struggles to get his cabinet nominees approved by parliament, Taliban fighters carry out co-ordinated attacks in the capital.

Delegates gather in London for a conference on future strategy in Afghanistan, including a proposal to negotiate with Taliban supporters and persuade them to lay down their arms in return for money and jobs.

Messianism in Iranian Foreign Policy

The messianic doctrine of Mahdism is also manifest in Iranian foreign policy, especially in its attitude towards the Western superpowers and towards the nuclear program. Ayatollah Mesbah-e Yazdi, mentor to Ahmadinejad, expressed this approach in an October 11, 2006 speech: “The greatest obligation of those awaiting the appearance of the Mahdi is fighting heresy and global arrogance [i.e. the West, primarily the U.S.].”[xviii]

Ahmadinejad’s speeches are characteristically derisive of the “forces of arrogance,” i.e., the West, primarily the U.S., and threatening towards anyone who does not accept Shi’ite messianism as an alternative to the “perdition and destruction” awaiting them: “Those who do not respond to the call to proceed towards the truth – a good destiny does not await them. I heard that the president of one of those countries [i.e. U.S. President George Bush]… said that Iran’s president was threatening him. I say to him: ‘I am not the one threatening you. It is the entire world that threatens you, because the world in its

entirety is steadfast against oppression and the oppressors.

You [Western countries] are nothing compared to the might of God. We invite you to [take] the righteous path, the path of the Prophets,

of monotheism and justice.

If you believe that you can sit in your glass palaces and determine the fate of the world, you are mistaken… Our call [to you] to take the direction of truth [stems] from pity. We do not want you to get into trouble, since you know that the outcome of oppression and injustice is perdition and destruction.”[xix]

These characteristics are also evident in Ahmadinejad’s nuclear policy: In contrast to Khatami’s government, which endeavored to soften the position of the West on the nuclear issue via ongoing dialogue, Ahmadinejad and his close circle do not avoid confronting the West, since they consider this struggle to be one of the ways to prepare the ground for the return of the Mahdi.

According to the Internet daily Rooz, “Some of those close to Ahmadinejad, who frequently speak [of the need] to prepare the ground for the Mahdi’s return, explicitly link the [fate of] the Iranian nuclear dossier to this need… According to reliable information, they stressed, in various private meetings, that the [Iranian] opposition to global pressure [on the Iranian nuclear program] and its insistence on the right to utilize nuclear power are among the ways to prepare the ground for the return of the [Hidden] Imam.”[xx]

Mahdism in the Ideology of Ayatollah Mohammad Taqi Mesbah-e Yazdi

The address given at this year’s International Seminar on the Doctrine of Mahdism by Ayatollah Mohammad Taqi Mesbah-e Yazdi shows that he too regards belief in the Mahdi as a concept that transcends the religious or theoretical realm.

Ayatollah Yazdi gave this belief a tangible political-ideological dimension when he explained that the Mahdi’s return would lead to the establishment of a single rule over the entire world, and that the present battle against the infidels and against “the global arrogance” is preparing the ground for, and hastening, the coming of the Mahdi:[xxi]

“…Implementing the laws of Islam, establishing justice and fighting heresy and oppression are the most important duties for those who await [the return of] the Hidden Imam and prepare the ground for his coming… We must enhance religious faith and [the power] of religion in Iran and in the entire world… In order to hasten the coming of the Hidden Imam, we must disseminate justice and religious law, in order to increase the public’s awareness of them [throughout the world], so that the [Shi’ite] faith will be accepted by society [everywhere]…

“One of the ideological aspects of the Mahdist doctrine is [its] universality, since the Mahdi comes to establish justice and righteousness in the entire world. Another aspect is the dissemination of justice and righteousness [under the rule of] a single man, a single center, and a single system. Since it is the Hidden Imam who is responsible for disseminating righteousness and justice, the world will need to have a single center and government… so that it will emerge from a state of [division] and establish a single [universal] rule headed by the [Hidden Imam], and every kind of oppression and exploitation will [then] vanish from the world…”

In a 2006 speech marking the Mahdi’s birthday, Ayatollah Mesbah-e Yazdi emphasized the importance of fighting heresy, which, in his opinion, is delaying the coming of the Mahdi: “…Our noblest duty is to strive to reduce oppression, to be more [stringent] in our implementation of Islamic law… and to weaken the control of oppressive and tyrannical regimes over the oppressed. These [actions] can [hasten] the return of the Hidden Imam… If we wish to expedite the Mahdi’s coming, we must remove any obstacles [delaying his return]. What are the obstacles delaying the appearance of the Mahdi

? [They are] the [heretical] denial of the blessing [conferred] on society by the presence of the Imam, [as well as] ingratitude, insubordination, and objections [to the doctrine of Mahdism]. If we want to hasten the coming of the Mahdi, we must eliminate these obstacles.

We must strive to instate greater justice, ensure a [more stringent] implementation of Islamic law, [bring] the people to take greater interest in the faith and its directives, [establish] the religious laws as the dominant [values] of society, [ensure] that religious faith be taken as a consensus at conferences, and limit the [control of the oppressors, i.e. of the Western powers] over the oppressed throughout the world – both Muslim and non-Muslim. [This is what we must do] in order to prepare the ground for the Mahdi’s coming. Thus, the greatest obligation of those awaiting the appearance of the Mahdi is fighting heresy and global arrogance.”[xxii]

Support from Conservative-Revolutionary Circles for the Politicization of the Mahdist Doctrine

The politicization of the doctrine of Mahdism has found support among conservative circles and certain sectors in the security forces that belong to the ideological camp of Ayatollah Taqi Mesbah-e Yazdi, which brought Ahmadinejad to power. The weekly Parto-ye Sokhan, for example, stated that “with the advent of the new government, and [due to] Ahmadinejad’s singular devotion to the Hidden Imam and his heir, the people of the West and [the Iranian] dissidents fear a rise in Mahdism not only in Iran but throughout the world… [They fear this] because they see Ahmadinejad taking every opportunity and using every platform to spread this doctrine… so that the blessed name of the Mahdi is reaching the ears of all the people of the world, [even] from the world’s most exalted political pulpit – the U.N. [Assembly Hall].”[xxiii] Parto-ye Sokhan characterized Ahmadinejad’s mention of the Mahdi in his U.N. speech as “one of [his] foreign policy successes.”[xxiv]

After Ahmadinejad’s rise to power, Ayatollah Yazdi’s pupil and spokesman Qassem Ravanbakhsh expressed his hope that “during Ahmadinejad’s term in office, religious laws that were suspended and religious values that became weak [during the era of presidents Khatami and Rafsanjani]… will once again receive [due] attention in order to prepare the ground for the arrival of the Hidden Imam. Ravanbakhsh also rejected the claim that Ahmadinejad is not fit to be president because he is not a cleric, saying that being a cleric “is not a requirement for [serving the people].” To support this point, he stated that “in previous administrations – such as that of Khatami, who is a cleric – it was the presidency that dealt the worst blows to Islamic values.”[xxv]

Support for Ahmadinejad’s policy also came from the conservative group called Ansar-e Hizbullah.

A spokesman, Ali Davani, said at one of the group’s weekly meetings that Ahmadinejad’s U.N. address in 2005 “was one of the signs [heralding the imminent] return of the Hidden Imam.”[xxvi] Fatemeh Rajabi, who is affiliated with Ansar-e Hizbullah and who authored a book about Ahmadinejad titled The Miracle of the Third Millennium, said that the “Ahmadinejad government [was established to facilitate] the coming of the Hidden Imam.”

Israel’s Next Hizbullah War May Escalate Into Fight With Lebanon

(Israelnationalnews.com) If Israel and Hizbullah ever go to battle again, it may lead to a full-out war between the Jewish State and Lebanon. According to the Washington Post, Hizbullah’s rearmament deep in northern Lebanon would force Israel to fight the terrorist army far past the border.

Although 10,000 U.N. troops patrol southern Lebanon and believe they are putting a damper on Hizbullah maneuvering close to Israel’s border, analysts say the group of international soldiers is essentially obsolete. Hizbullah’s redeployment has focused away from the border and further north into Lebanon, where UNIFIL troops do not patrol.

Israeli intelligence suggests that Hizbullah rocket sites may extend north of the Lebanese capital of Beirut. Because of new capabilities in the terror group’s estimated 40,000-70,000 missile arsenal, the range of some their rockets – even from Beirut – may reach Tel Aviv.

Lebanese politicians and analysts, as well as analysts from the U.S. Army War College, all agree that Hizbullah has performed very effectively and has grown stronger since 2006, according to the Post.

With Iran backing Hizbullah and the United States traditionally aligning with Israel, the next Israeli exchange with Hizbullah could mushroom into a massive battle on Lebanese soil.

Retired Maj. Gen. Giora Eiland, a former Israeli national security adviser who is now a senior researcher at Tel Aviv University’s Institute for National Security Studies, said Israel will “not contain” the next war against Hizbullah, and that “the only way to deter the other side and prevent the next round — or if it happens, to win — is to have a military confrontation with the state of Lebanon.”

In the meantime, the Lebanese army has signed an agreement with the French company Euro Tech to revamp 13 of Lebanon’s Gazelle helicopters owned by Lebanon. They will also equip 10 Puma helicopters given to Lebanon by the United Arab Emirates. According to the UAE,

the gift helicopters are not for combat use. However, France expressed concern about arm ing the Lebanese army

Background

According to Shi’ite tradition, the Twelve Imams, descendants of the Prophet Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law Ali Ibn Abi Talib, were endowed with divine qualities that enabled them to lead the Shi’ite believers and to function as Allah’s emissaries on earth. However, when the Twelfth Imam Muhammad Al-Mahdi[i] disappeared in 941 CE, his connection with the Shi’ite believers was severed, and since then, the Shi’ites are commanded to await his return at any time.

In the meantime, Shi’ite senior clerics are considered to be the representatives of the Imams, and thus have the authority to handle the affairs of the Shi’ite community, mainly in the religious and judicial spheres, until the Hidden Imam returns to lead the Shi’ite community and deliver it from its suffering.

According to Shi’ite belief, during the period of the Mahdi’s absence (termed ghaibat or “occultation”), no one but God knows the hour of the Mahdi’s return, and no man can presume to foresee when this hour will come. Upon the Mahdi’s reappearance, all wrongs will be righted, divine justice will be instated, and the truth of Shi’ite Islam will be ac knowledged

by the entire world.

Mahdism and the Islamic Regime in Iran

From the establishment of the Islamic Regime in 1979 to Ahmadinejad’s rise to power in August 2005, Mahdism had been a religious doctrine and a tradition that had no political manifestation.

The political system operated independently of this messianic belief and of the anticipation of the return of the Mahdi. It was only with Ahmadinejad’s presidency that this religious doctrine has become a political philosophy and taken a central place in politics.

During the era of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, founder of Iran’s Islamic regime, Mahdism remained outside the political realm.

However, Khomeini’s era was nonetheless characterized by messianic fervor. The Iranians attributed messianic qualities to him, and conferred upon him the title of “Imam,” which until then had been reserved for the Twelve Imams.

In fact, Khomeini’s rise to power was seen at the time as the realization of the prophecy regarding the Mahdi’s return.

Khomeini’s instatement of the Rule of the Jurisprudent (velayat-e faqih) in Iran prompted a transformation in Shi’ism, replacing its traditional passivity with a more active outlook. As part of this change, Khomeini stated that the Shi’ites must not just passively await the return of the Mahdi, but must actively prepare the ground for his return and for the deliverance of the Shi’ite community. One component of this active approach was the taking of power by the clerics. However, Khomeini kept the doctrine of Mahdism at

the periphery of the political sphere. He neither claimed to have a direct connection with God, nor presumed to foresee the hour of the Mahdi’s return.

After Khomeini’s death in 1989, Mahdism declined in Iran. The administrations of Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani (1989-1997) and Mohammad Khatami (1997-2005) maintained strict separation between politics and Mahdism – a policy that would change with Ahmadinejad’s presidency.[iii]

This document reviews the politicization of Mahdism by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and by his spiritual mentor Ayatollah Taqi Mesbah-e Yazdi, and presents some of the reactions to it in Iran’s political and intellectual circles.

Ahmadinejad’s Messianic Policy – Main Characteristics

Immediately upon assuming the presidency, Ahmadinejad began to assert his belief in the imminent return of the Mahdi as the basis for his political activities. Despite the traditional belief that no one can foresee the hour of the Mahdi’s return, Ahmadinejad frequently stated that his coming was nigh, and even gave a more specific prediction. During a meeting with the foreign minister of an Islamic country, he said that the crisis in Iran “presaged the coming of the Hidden Imam, who would appear within the next two years.”[iv] In a December 2006 speech in Kermanshah, Ahmadinejad wished the Christians a merry Christmas and said: “I hereby announce that, with God’s help, the day is not far off when Jesus will return at the side of the Hidden Imam.”[v]

Not only has Ahmadinejad wished to proclaim the imminent coming of the Mahdi, and thereby to legitimize his policy

and actions by associating them with Hidden Imam – but he has also presented himself as being directly connected to God.

In a recent speech about Iran’s nuclear program, he claimed to have “a connection with God,” and exhorted the Iranians to be true believers so that God would support them in their just struggle for nuclear technology:

“Believe [me], legally speaking, and in the eyes of public opinion, we have absolutely succeeded. I say this out of knowledge. Someone asked me: ‘So and so said that you have a connection.’ I said: ‘Yes, I have.’ He asked me: ‘ Really, you have a connection

? With whom?’ I answered: ‘I have a connection with God,’ since God said that the infidels will have no way to harm the believers. Well, [but] only if we are believers, because God said: You [will be] the victors. But the same friends say that Ahmadinejad says strange things.

“If we are [really] believers, God will show us victory, and this miracle. Is it necessary today for a she-camel to emerge from the heart of the mountain[vi] so that my friends will accept the miracle

? Wasn’t the [Islamic] Revolution [enough of] a miracle? Wasn’t the Imam [Ayatollah Khomeini] a miracle?… “[vii]

Ahmadinejad has also presented himself as being privy to God’s intentions and actions, as reflected in his statement that “God has appointed the Hidden Imam to be our supporter.”[viii] His claim of having a direct relationship with God was also evident in the speech he made upon his return to Iran after addressing the U.N. General Assembly in 2005. Ahmadinejad claimed that, as he was delivering his U.N. address, he felt himself “surrounded by a halo of light” symbolizing the messianic nature of his message to the nations of the world.[ix]

Ahmadinejad’s speeches have been characterized by the use of messianic terms and by emphasis on the need to prepare the ground for the Mahdi’s return.[x] For example, in a May 2007 speech in Kerman province, he said: “We have a mission – to turn Iran into the coutnry of the Hidden Imam.”[xi]
As part of their commitment to these preparations, and at the suggestion of senior Ahmadinejad aide Parviz Daoudi, the Iranian ministers signed a pledge of allegiance to the Hidden Imam during the government’s first session, along with the pledge of allegiance to Ahmadinejad.[xii]

In accordance with his messianic policy, Ahmadinejad has also endorsed an Iranian-Shi’ite folk tradition which maintains that the Hidden Imam attaches special importance to the Jamkaran Mosque in Qom – a tradition that has not been supported by the conservative religious establishment.[xiii] As part of this policy, Iranian Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad Hossein Saffar Harandi was ordered to drop the ministers’ pledge of allegiance into a well in the courtyard of the Jamkaran Mosque, where believers drop prayers and personal requests.

Ahmadinejad has also allocated $10 million for renovating the mosque and its surroundings in preparation for the return of the Mahdi, and in 2005, he spent some $8 million on refreshments for pilgrims during the celebration of the Mahdi’s birthday.[xiv] The regime’s encouragement of Mahdism is also evident in content on the website of Iran’s government broadcasting service. For example, the site presents information on the Iranian TV series “The World Toward Illumination,” which deals with the imminent arrival of the Mahdi.[xv]

It should be noted that political manifestations of Ahmadinejad’s messianic beliefs were evident even prior to his election

to the presidency. According to reports, during his term as mayor of Tehran (2003-2005), the municipality printed a city map which showed, among other things, the route that will be taken by the Mahdi upon his return.[xvi]

At the International Seminar on the Doctrine of Mahdism, held in Iran September 6-7, 2006 during the celebrations for the Mahdi’s birthday, and attended by representatives of various countries, Ahmadinejad emphasized the universal and active nature of Mahdism and called on the West to accept it: “Today mankind is proceeding towards the truth. Today the happiness of mankind depends on proceeding towards the truth.

Today we invite everyone to proceed towards the truth, since [the truth] is the only way… This celebration [of the Mahdi’s birthday] is not only for Muslims but for the entire world. The Mahdi belongs to all of mankind…

“The Hidden Imam has no tangible presence among us, but he is always [here], and we must prepare the ground for his speedy appearance… Some claim that during his occultation, his [nobility] is suspended, but that is not true… On the contrary, we must rush towards him and hasten to prepare the ground for his appearance.

[He will not appear] if we sit idly. Mankind must hurry towards the Hidden Imam in order to reach him. A person who [actively hastens the coming of the Imam] is different from one who does not… Today, mankind is proceeding rapidly towards perfection, truth, justice, love, peace and compassion, and this is possible only under the rule of the perfect man [i.e. the Hidden Imam]…”[xvii]

Why will the final war of this Gentile Age be Conventional?

I long ago lost track of how many atomic fallouts I prepared for cities and military installations of our enemies during the cold war, based on the upper level winds above them.

I also remember well making and issuing forecasts of where the clouds of atomic radiation would exit Russia over the Pacific Ocean after each Hydrogen Bomb was detonated on Novaya Zemiya Island in the Kara Sea.

The things that many writers on Zechariah 14 indicate as thermonuclear burning of the flesh are heat blasts from sudden lava release by God along the Jordan River Valley near the end of the Tribulation Period. I have contended this for more than 30 years in all my books.

THE GREAT WINEPRESS OF GOD

Revelation 14:19,20 – And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. [20] And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

This particular angel thrusts his sickle INTO the earth. We are advised in verse 20 as to WHERE the sickle makes its earthly penetration; somewhere in Israel “outside the city,” which is the city of Jerusalem. The w ord used f

or winepress is “LENOS,” which means: “a trough dug in the earth, a ditch or canal, or anything shaped like a tub.” The w inepresses with which John was familiar were rectangular

in shape and made of, or dug out of, the rock of the earth. Blood-red wine was made from grapes. The ripe clusters were carried in baskets and thrown into the press. The winepress consisted of a shallow trough built above the ground, or excavated by chipping it out of limestone rocks in the earth. There were also village and household winepresses, but since the one to which John refers is one in a vineyard field, one made by chipping out a rectangular trough in limestone rock, I will limit my discourse to that type. One end of this type was made lower, such that the blood-red liquid from the grapes would flow into it, after being pressed out by the feet of humans in the shallow end. So both the upper and lower sections of the winepress presented a view of a blood-red trough in the crust of the earth.

John, in his vision, looks down upon the earth and, from this aerial view, recognized the city of Jerusalem, a city he had looked down upon many times from the Mount of Olives. He beheld “without” (outside) Jerusalem, to the east, the greatest winepress ever seen by human eyes. He saw a trough (lenos) in the earth 1600 furlongs (185 miles) in length. The opening of the earth caused by the angel’s sickle had caused blood (haima) to come up “out” (ek) of the winepress to a depth of about five feet (“unto the horse bridles”). The Greek word used for blood is haima, which can mean real blood, or any object taking on a blood red color, or any liquid that has a blood-red hue. The Hebrew word for blood is also used to describe a blood-red liquid rather than body blood, as we find stated in Genesis 49:11 – “Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass’s colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes:” The moon will not turn to real blood in the Tribulation Period, but it will take on a blood-red hue, as is described by the use of the word haima in Revelation 6:12 – “And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;” Before this Birth Pang is completed I will carefully pull together everything previously stated, and thereby put together a full exposition of Revelation 14:19,20. But for now I must take time to describe one of the most terrifying creations of God in the distant past: a flood-basalt plain.

In the distant past, six major rips in the crust of the earth have produced six great basaltic flood plains. These great cleavages of the earth’s crust occurred in zones along the dashed lines of Figure 3.

They represent old magma extrusions associated with the initial stages of continental drift. Dr. W. Kenneth Hamblin, in his standard geological text, The Earth’s Dynamic Systems, states: “Where the rift system passes beneath a continent, the continental crust is split and great volumes of basalt are extruded and spread out over large areas of the continent. These great floods of lava fill the lowlands and depressions in the existing topography.” The rift system that passes beneath the continent from the Gulf of Aqabah northward through Israel is a prime candidate for the sudden creation of a raging flood basalt plain. The following quoted material, concerning flood basalt plains, was extracted from Volcano, volume 2 of A 1982 Time-Life series that examines the workings of the planet earth: “ Flood basalts are generated atop the upper mantle.

When tension opens fissures in the crust, the fluid magma spurts directly to the surface. The sheer volume of it dwarfs all other volcanic activity: a week long flow can release 360 cubic miles of lava, 10 times the volume of Mount Rainier.

Extremely fluid magma suddenly spurts to the surface through a line of hundred of offset dikes, each one as much as 15 miles long and fifty feet wide. The lava from such individual fissures, about five cubic miles per day, is so hot and runny that it speeds down the slightest slope at speeds up to 10 miles an hour, creating a lava sheet as much as 100 miles wide. Standard textbooks note “sooner or later they must recur.” This liquid rock can hit the surface at temperatures from 2300 to 2900 degrees Fahrenheit. This is double the temper ature required to crem

ate a human body. At these temperatures, the flesh would disappear from the body before it hit the ground, were it directly exposed to the initial air heat flash surge near the crack through which the magna extruded. All that would remain would be a human skeleton. At the same time that the Mount of Olives cleaves in its midst, and all the land in Israel from Geba to Rimmon is lifted up, what follows will happen to the antichrist’s army in the Jordan River Valley, as indicated in Zechariah 14:3-12.

Zechariah 14:12 – And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

At some point in time, near the end of the Tribulation Period, the great rift valley of Israel will suddenly rip open from one end to the other. For a period of time after this ripping a vast flood basalt plain will be created along a 1600 furlough (185 mile) section of the valley. Looking down on it from heaven in his vision it looked like a north-south winepress. It was east of Jerusalem, along the Jordan River Valley, as a long rectangular trough in the crust of the earth filled with blood. Tremendous tectonic changes will completely restructure the entire valley from the Gulf of Aqabah to Lebanon. The fissures will close abruptly at the end of the Tribulation Period from the southern end of the Dead Sea to Lebanon.

However, limited volcanic activity will continue south of the Dead Sea, in what once was Idumea, throughout Christ’s Millennial Reign from “generation to generation,” according to Isaiah.

Isaiah 34:8-10 – For it is the day of the Lord’s vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion. [9] And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch. [10] It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever.

Now, considering John’s description of the great winepress in Revelation 14:19,20, in light of one of God’s fantastic creations in the earth, let us compare God’s linguistics with God’s science. What John saw looked like a great lenos (trough or ditch or canal) about 185 miles long. I call your attention to Figure 24, Part A, which is an excerpt from a 1970 diagram by Dr. Fruend showing both sides of the Dead Sea Rift. The long dashed black lines that run north and south along both sides of the Dead Sea, from the Gulf of Aqabah through Israel, are great fissures in the crust of the earth. These fissures erratically weave down through the crust of the earth to eventually make contact with great undersea lakes of magma. P art A of Figure 24 gives

a picture of these fissures as though you were looking down on them from a satellite, while Part B pictures the same fissures as though you were deep within the earth looking northward, and could see their downward progression into the earth. These fissures are where they should be to comply with the description by John. They are “without the city,” which is Jerusalem. And the word lenos does fit

the characteristics of the Jordan River Valley, which is a great trough in the crust of the earth.

John saw haima come up out the lenos to cover an area some 185 miles long. John viewed a blood-red liquid (haima), which we call lava, spread across the great trough (lenos) to fill what we know as the Jordan River Valley. And the blood-red liquid filled the valley to a depth of about five feet (height of a horse bridle). Please note that, on Part A of Figure 24, a lone fissure veers off from the main trough, then extends northwest past the Tel of Armageddon, and finally goes on to Haifa, where it meets the Mediterranean Sea. If you measure northward from the northern tip of the Gulf of Aqabah to the point of departure by the fissure that extends to Haifa, you will discover it is 1600 furlongs, or 185 miles. I believe this 185 mile section of the Jordan River trough is the great winepress that John saw filled with a blood-red fluid as he looked down upon the earth in his vision.

Please observe Figure 25. God, for some time, has brought an unbelievable tonnage of hot flowing rock upward into the Red Sea Fault. As this liquid rock makes contact with the water- cooled Red Sea floor, it solidifies into new basaltic crust. This new crust is forcing two gre at pl

ates, the Arabian and African, to move away from one another at a rapid geological rate. This particular segment is moving faster than others in the Middle East. Please note that, on Figure 25, while the Red Sea section of the fault is spreading rapidly, the great Rift Fault running up both sides of the Jordan Valley, is locked tighter than a drum. Long ago God pushed together these two great tectonic plates, which are separated only by the Jordan Rift Valley between them. God’s horizontal pressure fused both sides of the valley floor to these plates, like one would push together two pieces of clay.

It is this horizontal pressure that locks the fissures in place and prevents magma from spurting to the surface on both sides of the valley. The locked section, (See Figure 26), is held together by a strong tensional force placed there by God. In the Red Sea section of the rift God is generating a force that is in direct opposition to His tensional force that locks the section through Israel. Tensional forces are building in the Gulf of Aqabah, and soon the southern opposing force will end a long struggle by ripping apart the northern section to form a flood basalt plain. It will be sudden, abrupt, and horrifying. God will suddenly create flood basalt plains 185 miles long that begin at the Gulf of Aqabah, and then extend up to the east end of the Valley of Jezreel. On both sides of the Jordan River Valley hot fountains of blood-red liquid, now confined by pressure below the fissures of Figure 27, will suddenly shoot hundreds of feet into the air. And a heat flash will blast toward the west to reach the foothills of the mountains of Judea, Samaria, and Galilee, and toward the east to smash against the bluffs of the mountains of Moab and Ammon. I believe Figure 28 is what John saw from the air in Revelation 14:19,20. When the angel, who has authority to say when fire is to be released on the earth, tells the angel that has the sickle to stick it into the earth, then as the sickle goes in, the vine of the of the earth (the antichrist’s army) will feel the wrath of God. God does not have to use the creations of man to fulfill his prophecies. As he did in the flood of Noah, he will destroy man “with the earth,” but this time it will be fire from the earth, rather than water on the earth.

Revelation 14:18 – And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.

Attaining the ability to enrich uranium up to 20 percent grade brings Iran dangerously close to “break-out” point for a nuclear weapon capability,

DEBKAfile’s intelligence sources report. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad promised the “good news” would be announced during the Feb. 1-11 celebrations of the Islamic Revolution. The “news” also prompted an urgent cabinet meeting in Jerusalem last week.

Ahmadinejad’s announcement is a provocative demonstration of contempt for the six world powers and their offer to trade Iran’s low-grade uranium for 20 pc enriched product overseas. By going public on the banned process and abandoning concealment, Iran’s rulers are throwing down the gauntlet to them and Israel.

DEBKAfile’s Iranian sources report that the hawks of the Islamic regime led by Ahmadinejad and spiritual ruler Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have won the day for their tactics of jumping ahead of any possible US-led or Israel steps against their nuclear program with its own aggressive initiatives.

The Iranian president’s enrichment announcement at a time that the Obama administration is pondering tough sanctions against the Revolutionary Guards was part of this policy; so were the Syrian and Hizballah declarations of military preparedness for a purported Israeli attack last week, taking advantage of an IDF war game to raise the alarm.

Our political sources predict that Tehran’s provocative move will be met with more of the five months of foot-dragging with which Washington and Jerusalem have met Iran’s contempt for one deadline after another for ending nuclear enrichment.

Both will continue to dither and pretend that stiff sanctions can scotch the Iranian nuclear threat. Tehran has meanwhile made good use of those five months to go forward and achieve a 20 pc enrichment capability.

The only straight talk from any Western leader has come from French president Nicolas Sarkozy.

Saturday, Jan. 23, he told visiting Lebanese prime minister Saad Hariri that France has evidence Iran is developing nuclear weapons contrary to its claims. He warned that Israel “would not stand by while Iran develops nuclear weapons.”

U.S. official: Arming of Hezbollah could spark Israel-Syria war

An American source says that Syria allowed Hezbollah operatives to train within its territory in the use of advanced SA2 anti-aircraft missile batteries, the Kuwaiti daily Al Rai reported Sunday.

In an interview, the senior U.S. official warned that if Syria supplies Hezbollah with this type of missile, Israel will bomb Damascus and a war will likely ensue.

According to the official, Israel has warned Syria not to allow the transfer of the SA2 missiles into the hands of Hezbollah, and views the transfer of such missiles as the crossing of a red line.

He added that he did not believe that a war would break out soon, unless one of the sides violated the undeclared agreement not to cross the red lines defined by both sides.

The Second Lebanon War, waged in 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah, turned southern Lebanon into a territory not unlike the Golan Heights, in that it does not enjoy the absence of conflict but rather a fragile cease-fire, the official said.

Since the war ended, the international intelligence community and the United Nations have been closely monitoring the smuggling of weapons from Syria to Hezbollah, but the ongoing smuggling has not yet crossed the so call red lines.

The official added that Israel’s top priority at this point is to prevent Hezbollah from obtaining the SA2 missiles, which are controlled from a remote command center. The official stressed that if Syria turns these weapons over to Hezbollah, Israel will not hesitate to strike Syria, including the capital Damascus.
