THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE TRIBULATION EXPLOSION WITH THE FIRST GREAT EARTHQUAKE IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION WHICH I THINK IS LIKELY TO BEGIN AT SOME POINT IN TIME BEFORE 2015.

Revelation 6:12-15 – And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; [13] And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. [14] And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain

and island were moved out of their places.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS BETWEEN THE FIRST AND LAST EARTHQUAKE IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION.

Isaiah 29:6 – Thou shalt be visited of the Lord of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS TO CLOSE THE TRIBULATION WITH THE LAST GREAT EARTHQUAKE IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION AT THE BATTLE OF ARMAGEDDON

Revelation16:16-21 – And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. [17] And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. THIS IS WHAT IT WILL BE LIKE AFTER JESUS RETURNS TO RULE AND REIGN ON THIS PRESENT EARTH FROM JERUSALEM

Zechariah 14:8,9 – And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.

[9] And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.

Zechariah 14:16 – And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

Micah 4:1-7 – But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. Destructive Tsunami Crashes Over Solomon Islands

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A tsunami unleashed by a major earthquake plowed into the Solomon Islands on Monday with the crashing waters devastating at least one village.

Initial reports said no one was seriously hurt.

A series of major quakes have rocked the South Pacific region since Sunday, with three powerful temblors striking Monday, including a 7.2 magnitude tremor. The Solomon Island’s National Disaster Management Office said reports of the devastation were beginning to filter in late Monday.

The tremors were centered beneath the ocean floor near the town of Gizo, which was badly damaged in April 2007 when a 8.1-magnitude quake sent a tsunami crashing into the coast, killing more than 50 people.

Monday’s tsunami devastated a village on Rendova Island, some 188 miles (300 kilometers) from the capital Honiara, disaster management official Loti Yates told The Associated Press.

”One report from police was that one village was hit by a 6 to 10 foot (2-3 meter) wall of sea water,” Yates said. ”It was a total inundation police saw in a fly over.”

Rendova is home to about 3,600 people.

Yates said in Baniata village on Rendova’s coast, 16 houses were destroyed and 32 damaged by the quake and the wave.

”It could be several hundred houses have been damaged … but that is still not verified,” said Yates. ”There are two to three villages where the situation could be much worse.”

Ten foreign tourists were staying on Tetepare Island, an uninhabited eco-tourism site, and the four Germans, four Britons and two New Zealanders were evacuated. Unconfirmed reports said two had been injured.

Yates said there were no other reports of injuries. ”We’re lucky that whatever happened happened during the day and people were able to hike up the hills,” he said

helicopters and a police boat were carrying out damage assessments and a vessel carrying water, food and tarpaulins was dispatched from Honiara.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded eight earthquakes in the region since late Sunday.

The magnitude 7.2 was centered 64 miles (103 kilometers) southeast of Gizo, and followed a magnitude 6.5 tremor less than two hours earlier centered 54 miles (90 kilometers) southeast of Gizo at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers).

The latest aftershock was magnitude 6.1 and struck late Monday, 22 miles (36 kilometers) southeast of Gizo, U.S. Geological Survey said in a statement.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center geophysicist Gerard Fryer in Hawaii said it was too small to create a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The Solomon Islands lie on the ”Ring of Fire” — an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim and where about 90 percent of the world’s quakes occur.

Exposition of Isaiah 61 – Part 1

This is a line by line, phrase by phrase, exposition of the 61st Chapter of the book of Isaiah. Part 1 contains an exposition of Isaiah 61:1 parallel with its quotation by Jesus in Luke 4:18.

Isaiah 61:1 – The Spirit of the Lord God is UPON ME; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

61:1A – The Spirit of the Lord God is UPON ME;

Luke 4:18A – The Spirit of the Lord is UPON ME,

The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus after John baptized him. This marked the beginning of the earthly ministry of the Son of God. Mary was the daughter of Heli. He was a direct descendant of Seth, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, and King David.

Luke 3:21-23 – Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, [22] And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove UPON HIM, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. [23] And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,

[17] And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. The words used for “meek” in Isaiah 61:1B, and for “poor” in Luke 4:18B, are descriptive words for the character of the individuals that would receive the message Jesus was anointed to preach to Israel.

Isaiah 61:1B – Because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the MEEK;

Luke 4:18B – Because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the POOR;

This was not the general attitude of the Jewish people at that time – they were neither meek nor poor in spirit.

The attitude of the Jewish priests, rulers, and leaders of Jesus’ day were not interested in the coming of Messiah. They had carved themselves power and authority seats within the Roman governmental structure, and were very satisfied with the status quo. Their attitude is well reflected in their troubled state of mind when the wise men came looking for the new King born in Bethlehem.

Matthew 2:3 – When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

And from the time that John was cast into prison, Jesus began to preach the gospel, the good news that at last the promised kingdom was in the immediate future for all who had believed Messiah would come to bring it.

Matthew 4:11-12,17 – Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. [12] Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee; [17] From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN is at hand.

Luke 4:43,44 – And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. [44] And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.

However, only the poor in spirit, the humble, received it and believed they could inherit a kingdom on this earth.

Matthew 5:3,5 – Blessed are the POOR in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [5] Blessed are the MEEK: for they shall inherit the earth.

This was the kingdom Israel had been awaiting for the Messiah to bring in since Daniel defined it more than 600 years earlier.

Daniel 7:13,14 – I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. [14] And there was given him dominion, and glory, and A KINGDOM, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his KINGDOM that which shall not be destroyed.

Israel rejected the king and his gospel of his kingdom! But a remnant of Israel repented with broken hearts from contrite spirits, and they were comforted by the Messiah, being filled with his imputed righteousness.

Isaiah 61:1C – He hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted,

Luke 4:18C – He hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted,

Matthew 5:4,6 – Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be com

forted. [6] Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Psalm 34:18 – The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 51:17 – The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

The promised Seed of Genesis 3:15 crushed the head of the serpent Satan, who had held mankind captive in the bondage

of spiritual blindness since Adam’s fall in the garden. Messiah the Seed had his own body bruised on the cross as the price of our deliverance. Messiah came to proclaim that message to all who would receive it.

Isaiah 61:1D – To proclaim liberty to the CAPTIVES,

Luke 4:18D – To preach deliverance to the CAPTIVES, and recovering of sight to the Blind.

Genesis 3:15 – And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her SEED; it shall BRUISE thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Hebrews 2:14-17 – Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; [15] And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject TO BONDAGE. [16] For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Colossians 1:13,14 – Who hath DELIVERED US from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into THE KINGDOM of his dear Son: [14] In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

Messiah delivered us from the captivity of the spiritual blindness that existed until he came to give us the light of the glorious gospel in himself.

Luke 4:18E – And recovering of sight to the blind,

John 9:39-41 – And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.

[40] And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? [41] Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

Ephesians 4:18 – Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

Matthew 6:23B – If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

Romans 11:25 – For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

Isaiah 61:1E – And the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

Messiah opened the prison doors by which Satan had held all mankind, bringing grace and true in him, and with him, to set men free in the liberty he purchased with his own blood.

John 1:16,17 – And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

[17] For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

John 8:32,36 – And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. [36] If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

The prison doors have been opened and men set free from condemnation for sin by the new birth in Christ.

John 3:6,7 – That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. [7] Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

The purpose of the new birth is not just to save you from hell, it is to give you an opportunity to serve God, after Christ comes to eternally live in you, by letting him lead you in your new found liberty to be more and more like him, and less and less like your carnal man.

II Corinthians 3:17,18 – Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. [18] But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

John 6:63 – It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

John 8:31 – Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

James 1:25 – But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

I believe Zechariah 13:8 is likely to be fulfilled before 2015.

Zechariah 13:8 – And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

God’s Vials of Wrath will soon be poured out on this earth some three and one half years after Zechariah 13:8 is fulfilled.

Isaiah 66:15 – For, behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.

And at the end of the last vial the sign of the Son of Man will be seen in the heaven

Matthew 24:29,30 – Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: [30] And then SHALL APPEAR THE SIGN OF THE SON OF MAN IN HEAVEN: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

His Sign will be seen and set among the Gentiles fighting Israel at Armageddon and, in great fear of the God of Israel, they will transport all Israelites back to their land on whatever type of transport remains after the destruction of the great tribulation period.

Isaiah 66:19-21 – AND I WILL SET A SIGN AMONG THEM, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal, and Javan, to the isles afar off, that have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles.

[20] And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the Lord out of all n ations

upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, saith the Lord, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the Lord. [21] And I will also take of them for priests and for Levites, saith the Lord.

Isaiah 61:4-9 – And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.

Poll: Only 40% of Jews live in Israel

Global survey of Jews finds interfaith marriage and assimilation rising, especially in former USSR

Most of the world’s Jews do not live in Israel, says a poll summing up the past decade. There are currently 13.3 million Jews living in 100 countries all over the world, 41% of which have made Israel their home.

A similar number, 40%, live in the US. However experts have predicted that the tables are set to turn, and that within 20 years most Jews will be living in Israel.

Polls conducted over the past few years also show a steady rise in assimilation and interfaith marriages among Jews living in different countries, and identification with the holy land is steadily declining.

“Interfaith marriage among Jews is on the rise in every country in the world,” says Professor Sergio Della Pergola, an expert on Jewish demographics and the head of the Shlomo Argov chair of Israel-Diaspora Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

“However there are differences between the various Jewish communities in the world. Currently the highest rate of interfaith marriages is in the states of the former USSR – where more than 75% of Jews marry non-Jews.

In the US the figure is close to 55%, in France and England over 40%, in Canada 35%, in Australia 25%, and in Mexico 10%,” he told Ynet.

Della Pergola says the differences result in part from Jewish education as well as the proximity of other cultures.

“Of these two reasons, there is no doubt that the openness of society as a whole, while on the Jewish side there is a desire to fit in and climb the social ladder, can lead to the sacrificing of many Jewish characteristics and eventually its basic value system,” the professor explains.

However, he stressed that every Jewish community also includes many Jews who maintain their faith above all else.

Della Pergola added that there are many organizations currently working to change the statistics on assimilation. “Chabad, for example, is everywhere today,” he said.

“The Joint, the conservative movement, and the reform movement are working effectively in Eastern Europe and Latin America, and the presence of Shas, the Jewish Agency, and other Israeli organizations are also felt,” the professor added.

“In Western Europe, despite the aspirations for Jewish organizational independence within the European Union, the main factors affecting the daily Jewish character are mainly based in the US and Israel.”

But when asked whether he thought Jewish communities would disappear entirely from certain states, Della Pergola said this very rarely happened.

“The presence of Jews in certain countries is a reflection of history, meaning Jews were present in the same place in the past in certain numbers, and is significantly affected by social, political, and economic elements which create positive or negative conditions for the Jewish collective,” he said

“Jews are normally well-educated members of society and require a suitable social and authoritative framework.

This explains why the vast majority of Jews are currently residing in the 38 most developed countries in the world, including Israel, ranked 23rd. Future changes in state infrastructure will lead to changes in the geographic map of Jews in the world.”

Volcano erupts in eastern Congo

Mount Nyamulagira, 25km (16 miles) from the eastern city of Goma, erupted at dawn on Saturday, sending lava into the surrounding Virunga National Park.

Emmanuel de Merode, Virunga’s director, said that park staff were working with the civilian and military authorities to assess the risk and take appropriate action.

Rangers were deployed to the area to monitor the flow of lava and were due to report back hourly, he added.

A government official, Feller Lutahichirwa, said observers were monitoring the situation with help from UN helicopters, the Associated Press reports.

‘Mountain on fire’

While few people live in the area immediately affected, officials said their primary concern was to protect human settlements.

Innocent Mburanumwe, warden for Virunga’s southern sector, said that lava was flowing towards an area to the south of the volcano, where “many people” live.

“I was woken at 0345 [0145 GMT] by a loud bang, which I first thought was the sound of war,” he added.

“I thought there was fighting again near our park station,” he said, referring to the conflicts which have wracked eastern DR Congo.

“Then I saw the mountain was on fire with sparks flying.”

Mount Nyamulagira (also spelled Nyamuragira), which stands at 3,058m (10,033ft), is one of the most active volcanoes in Africa, according to officials in Virunga.

It has registered more than 35 eruptions since 1882, with the most recent before this weekend being in 2006.

Virunga, a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1979, is home to 200 of the world’s 720 remaining mountain gorillas but they live on the flanks of the Mikeno volcano further east from Nyamulagira.

Previous eruptions of the volcano have threatened the city of Goma, which has a population of at least 200,000 as well as tens of thousands of refugees.

Updated by 2300 UTC every Wednesday, notices of volcanic activity posted on these pages are preliminary and subject to change as events are studied in more detail. BEZYMIANNY Central Kamchatka (Russia) 55.978°N, 160.587°E; summit elev. 2882 m

KVERT reported that during 21-23 December a large and intense thermal anomaly from Bezymianny was detected in satellite imagery. During 22-24 December seismic activity was elevated and fumarolic activity was observed. Gas-and-steam plumes rose to an altitude of 4 km (13,100 ft) a.s.l. The Level of Concern Color Code remained at Yellow.

Geologic Summary. Prior to its noted 1955-56 eruption, Bezymianny volcano had been considered extinct. Three periods of intensified activity have occurred during the past 3,000 years. The latest period, which was preceded by a 1,000-year quiescence, began with the dramatic 1955-56 eruption. That eruption, similar to the 1980 event at Mount St. Helens, produced a large horseshoe-shaped crater

that was formed by collapse of the summit and an associated lateral blast. Subsequent episodic but ongoing lava-dome growth, accompanied by intermittent explosive activity and pyroclastic flows, has largely filled the 1956 crater.

Bezymianny Information from the Global Volcanism Program

MAYON Luzon 13.257°N, 123.685°E; summit elev. 2462 m

PHIVOLCS reported that during 23-29 December about 240 explosions from Mayon were seen during times of good visibility. Off-white, brownish, or grayish ash plumes rose as high as 2 km above the crater rim and drifted W and SW.

Lava flowed down the Bonga-Buyuan (SE), Miisi (S), and Lidong (ESE) gullies, and on 29 December was 5.8 km from the summit crater in the Buyuan channel. Intermittent rumbling and booming noises were noted and seismicity continued to be elevated. Detached incandescent fragments descended the flanks. Sulfur dioxide emissions fluctuated between about 2,300 and 9,000 tonnes per day. On 24 December lava fountains rose 500 m above the summit crater. Three pyroclastic flows on 25 December traveled 2 km.

Geologic Summary. Beautifully symmetrical Mayon volcano, which rises to 2,462 m above the Albay Gulf, is the Philippines’ most active volcano. The structurally simple volcano has steep upper slopes that average 35-40° and is capped by a small summit crater. The historical eruptions of this basaltic-andesitic volcano date back to 1616 and range from Strombolian to basaltic Plinian. Eruptions occur predominately from the central conduit and have also produced lava flows that travel far down the flanks. Pyroclastic flows and mudflows have commonly swept down many of the approximately 40 ravines that radiate from the summit and have often devastated populated lowland areas. Mayon’s most violent eruption, in 1814, killed more than 1,200 people and devastated several towns. Eruptions that began in February 2000 led PHIVOLCS to recommend on 23 February 2000 the evacuation of people within a radius of 7 km from the summit in the SE and within a 6 km radius for the rest of the volcano.

Mayon Information from the Global Volcanism Program

POAS Costa Rica 10.20°N, 84.233°W; summit elev. 2708 m

OVSICORI-UNA reported that on 25 December a phreatic eruption from Laguna Caliente, a summit lake of Poás, was seen by visitors standing at a viewpoint to the S of the crater. Lake water mixed with sediment and blocks was ejected 550-600 m above Laguna Caliente and fell in the vicinity of the lake, within the crater. The amount of steam emitted from lava-dome fumaroles, at the S edge of the lake, increased subsequent to the eruption.

Geologic Summary. The broad, well-vegetated edifice of Poás, one of the most active volcanoes of Costa Rica, contains three craters along a N-S line. The frequently visited multi-hued summit crater lakes of the basaltic-to-dacitic volcano, which is one of Costa Rica’s most prominent natural landmarks, are easily accessible by vehicle from the nearby capital city of San José. A N-S-trending fissure cutting the 2,708-m-high complex stratovolcano extends to

the lower northern flank, where it has produced the Congo stratovolcano and several lake-filled maars. The southernmost of the two summit crater lakes, Botos, is cold and clear and last erupted about 7,500 years ago. The more prominent geothermally heated northern lake, Laguna Caliente, is one of the world’s most acidic natural lakes, with a pH of near zero.

It has been the site of frequent phreatic and phreatomagmatic eruptions since the first historical eruption was reported in 1828. Poás eruptions often include geyser-like ejection of crater-lake water.

Poás Information from the Global Volcanism Program

REDOUBT Southwestern Alaska 60.485°N, 152.742°W; summit elev. 3108 m

AVO reported that during 27-28 December seismic activity from Redoubt changed from the pattern noted during the previous five months, and was characterized by a series of small repetitive earthquakes that occurred in the vicinity of the summit. The Volcanic Alert Level was raised to Advisory and the Aviation Color Code was raised to Yellow. Based on pilot reports and web camera views, no unusual activity or plumes were noted.

Geologic Summary. Redoubt is a 3108-m-high glacier-covered stratovolcano with a breached summit crater in Lake Clark National Park about 170 km SW of Anchorage. Next to Mount Spurr, Redoubt has been the most active Holocene volcano in the upper Cook Inlet.

Collapse of the summit of Redoubt 10,500-13,000 years ago produced a major debris avalanche that reached Cook Inlet. Holocene activity has included the emplacement of a large debris avalanche and clay-rich lahars that dammed Lake Crescent on the south side and reached Cook Inlet about 3500 years ago. Eruptions during the past few centuries have affected only the Drift River drainage on the north. Historical eruptions have originated from a vent at the north end of the 1.8-km-wide breached summit crater. The 1989-90 eruption of Redoubt had severe economic impact on the Cook Inlet region and affected air traffic far beyond the volcano.

SAN CRISTOBAL Nicaragua 12.702°N, 87.004°W; summit elev. 1745 m

Based on analyses of satellite imagery, the Washington VAAC reported that on 26 December an ash plume from San Cristóbal drifted 90 km WSW.
Geologic Summary. The San Cristóbal volcanic complex, consisting of five principal volcanic edifices, forms the NW end of the Marrabios Range. The symmetrical 1,745-m-high youngest cone, San Cristóbal itself (also known as El Viejo), is Nicaragua’s highest volcano and is capped by a 500 x 600 m wide crater. El Chonco, with several flank lava domes, is located 4 km to the west of San Cristóbal; it and the eroded Moyotepe volcano, 4 km to the NE of San Cristóbal, are of Pleistocene age. Volcán Casita contains an elongated summit crater and lies immediately E of San Cristóbal; Casita was the site of a catastrophic landslide and lahar in 1998. The Plio-Pleistocene La Pelona caldera is located at the eastern end of the San Cristóbal complex. Historical eruptions from San Cristóbal, consisting of small-to-moderate explosive activity, have been reported since the 16th century. Some other 16th-century eruptions attributed to Casita volcano are uncertain and may pertain to other Marrabios Range volcanoes.

ONGOING ACTIVITY

KARYMSKY Eastern Kamchatka 54.05°N, 159.45°E; summit elev. 1536 m

KVERT reported that during 18-25 December a thermal anomaly over Karymsky was detected in satellite imagery. Seismic data were not available due to technical problems. Based on information from the Yelizovo Airport (UHPP), the Tokyo VAAC reported that on 25 December an ash plume rose to an altitude of 6.7 km (22,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted SE. KVERT noted three linear areas of ash deposits 10 km SE of Karymsky. The Level of Concern Color Code remained at Orange.

Geologic Summary. Karymsky, the most active volcano of Kamchatka’s eastern volcanic zone, is a symmetrical stratovolcano constructed within a 5-km-wide caldera that formed about 7,600-7,700 radiocarbon years ago. Construction of the Karymsky stratovolcano began about 2,000 years later. The latest eruptive period began about 500 years ago, following a 2,300-year quiescence. Much of the cone is mantled by lava flows less than 200 years old. Historical eruptions have been Vulcanian or Vulcanian-Strombolian with moderate explosive activity and occasional lava flows from the summit crater. Most seismicity preceding Karymsky eruptions has originated beneath Akademia Nauk caldera, which is located immediately S of Karymsky volcano and erupted simultaneously with Karymsky in 1996.

Karymsky Information from the Global Volcanism Program

KILAUEA Hawaii (USA) 19.421°N, 155.287°W; summit elev. 1222 m

During 23-29 December, HVO reported that lava flowed SE from beneath Kilauea’s Thanksgiving Eve Breakout (TEB) and rootless shield complex through

a lava tube system, reaching the ocean at Waikupanaha. Thermal anomalies detected by satellite and visual observations revealed active lava flows on and at the base of the pali, and on the coastal plain. On 26 December, explosions at the ocean entry ejected material 15 m high. Incandescence was seen almost daily coming from Pu’u ‘O’o crater. The vent in Halema’uma’u crater continued to produce a plume that drifted mainly SW, dropping small amounts of ash, and occasionally fresh spatter, downwind. Incandescence originated from a very active, sloshing lava surface within a single opening on the deep floor of the vent cavity.

Parts of the opening rim periodically collapsed into the lava surface generating spatter that deposited on the floor and walls of the vent cavity.

Geologic Summary. Kilauea, one of five coalescing volcanoes that comprise the island of Hawaii, is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Eruptions at Kilauea originate primarily from the summit caldera or along one of the lengthy E and SW rift zones that extend from the caldera to the sea. About 90% of the surface of Kilauea is formed of lava flows less than about 1,100 years old; 70% of the volcano’s surface is younger than 600 years.

A long-term eruption from the East rift zone that began in 1983 has produced lava flows covering more than 100 sq km, destroying nearly 200 houses and adding new coastline to the island.

Kilauea Information from the Global Volcanism Program

KLIUCHEVSKOI Central Kamchatka (Russia) 56.057°N, 160.638°E; summit elev. 4835 m

KVERT reported that during 18-25 December seismic activity from Kliuchevskoi was above background levels and lava continued to flow down the ESE flank. Strombolian activity ejected material 300 m above the crater.

Satellite imagery revealed a large daily thermal anomaly at the volcano. The Level of Concern Color Code remained at Orange.

Geologic Summary. Kliuchevskoi is Kamchatka’s highest and most active volcano. Since its origin about 7,000 years ago, the beautifully symmetrical, 4,835-m-high basaltic stratovolcano has produced frequent moderate-volume explosive and effusive eruptions without major periods of inactivity. More than 100 flank eruptions, mostly on the NE and SE flanks of the conical volcano between 500 m and 3,600 m elevation, have occurred during the past 3,000 years. The morphology of its 700-m-wide summit crater has been frequently modified by historical eruptions, which have been recorded since the late-17th century. Historical eruptions have originated primarily from the summit crater, but have also included major explosive and effusive events from flank craters.

Kliuchevskoi Information from the Global Volcanism Program

SAKURA-JIMA Kyushu 31.585°N, 130.657°E; summit elev. 1117 m

Based on information from JMA, the Tokyo VAAC reported that during 23-29 December explosions from Sakura-jima produced plumes that rose to altitudes of 1.5-2.7 km (5,000-9,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted E, SE, and S. During 23-25 and 27 December, pilots reported that ash plumes rose to altitudes of 2.7-4.6 km (9,000-15,000 ft) a.s.l.

Geologic Summary. Sakura-jima, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, is a post-caldera cone of the Aira caldera at the northern half of Kagoshima Bay. Eruption of the voluminous Ito pyroclastic flow was associated with the formation of the 17 x 23-km-wide Aira caldera about 22,000 years ago. The construction of Sakura-jima began about 13,000 years ago and built an island that was finally joined to the Osumi Peninsula during the major explosive and effusive eruption of 1914. Activity at the Kita-dake summit cone ended about 4,850 years ago, after which eruptions took place at Minami-dake. Frequent historical eruptions, recorded since the 8th century, have deposited ash on Kagoshima, one of Kyushu’s largest cities, located across Kagoshima Bay only 8 km from the summit. The largest historical eruption took place during 1471-76.

Sakura-jima Information from the Global Volcanism Program

SHIVELUCH Central Kamchatka (Russia) 56.653°N, 161.360°E; summit elev. 3283 m

KVERT reported that during 18-25 December seismic activity from Shiveluch was above background levels, possibly indicating ash plumes rising to an altitude of 4.1 km (13,500 ft) a.s.l. Fumarolic activity was occasionally seen when the weather was clear. A video camera recorded an ash plume on 22 December. Analyses of satellite imagery revealed a large daily thermal anomaly from the lava dome. The Level of Concern Color Code remained at Orange. Based on information from KEMSD, the Tokyo VAAC reported that during 27-29 December eruptions produced plumes that rose to altitudes of 4.9-5.2 km (16,000-17,000 ft) a.s.l.

Geologic Summary. The high, isolated massif of Shiveluch volcano (also spelled Sheveluch) rises above the lowlands NNE of the Kliuchevskaya volcano group and forms one of Kamchatka’s largest and most active volcanoes. The currently active Molodoy Shiveluch lava-dome complex was constructed during the Holocene within a large breached caldera formed by collapse of the massive late-Pleistocene Strary Shiveluch volcano. At least 60 large eruptions of Shiveluch have occurred during the Holocene, making it the most vigorous andesitic volcano of the Kuril-Kamchatka arc. Frequent collapses of lava-dome complexes, most recently in 1964, have produced large debris avalanches whose deposits cover much of the floor of the breached caldera.

Intermittent explosive eruptions began in the 1990s from a new lava dome that began growing in 1980. The largest historical eruptions from Shiveluch occurred in 1854 and 1964.

Shiveluch Information from the Global Volcanism Program

SOUFRIERE HILLS Montserrat 16.72°N, 62.18°W; summit elev. 915 m

MVO reported that during 11-19 December activity from the Soufrière Hills lava dome continued at a high level. Observations with a high-resolution thermal camera revealed multiple rockfall channels on the W, NW, N, and NE flanks of the lava dome. Frequent pyroclastic flows were noted on the northern flank; pyroclastic flows traveled 3 km W down Gages Valley into Spring Ghaut, as far as 4 km NE down the White River valley, and as far as 2 km in Tyers Ghaut (NW). Occasional pyroclastic flows descended Gingoes Ghaut (S) and Tar River valley (E). Heavy ashfall was reported in many inhabited areas of Montserrat. Ashfall also occurred on many other Caribbean islands, as far as Puerto Rico (400 km ENE). The Hazard Level remained at 4. According to a news article on 29 December, about 45 commercial flights scheduled to arrive at or depart from Puerto Rico were cancelled due to ash in the area.

Geologic Summary. The complex dominantly andesitic Soufrière Hills volcano occupies the southern half of the island of Montserrat. The summit area consists primarily of a series of lava domes emplaced along an ESE-trending zone. English’s Crater, a 1-km-wide crater breached widely to the E, was formed during an eruption about 4,000 years ago in which the summit collapsed, producing a large submarine debris avalanche. Block-and-ash flow and surge deposits associated with dome growth predominate in flank deposits at Soufrière Hills. Non-eruptive seismic swarms occurred at 30-year intervals in the 20th century, but with the exception of a 17th-century eruption that produced the Castle Peak lava dome, no historical eruptions were recorded on Montserrat until 1995.

Long-term small-to-moderate ash eruptions beginning in that year were later accompanied by lava-dome growth and pyroclastic flows that forced evacuation of the southern half of the island and ultimately destroyed the capital city of Plymouth, causing major social and economic disruption.

Soufrière Hills Information from the Global Volcanism Program

SUWANOSE-JIMA Ryukyu Islands (Japan) 29.635°N, 129.716°E; summit elev. 799 m

Based on information from JMA, the Tokyo VAAC reported explosions from Suwanose-jima during 24, 26, and 28-29 December. Details of possible resulting emissions were not reported.

Geologic Summary. The 8-km-long, spindle-shaped island of Suwanose-jima in the northern Ryukyu Islands consists of an andesitic stratovolcano with two historically active summit craters. Only about 50 persons live on the sparsely populated island. The summit of the volcano is truncated by a large breached crater extending to the sea on the east flank that was formed by edifice collapse. Suwanose-jima, one of Japan’s most frequently active volcanoes, was in a state of intermittent Strombolian activity from On-take, the NE summit crater, that began in 1949 and lasted nearly a half century. The largest historical eruption took place in 1813-14, when thick scoria deposits blanketed residential areas, after which the island was uninhabited for about 70 years.

The SW crater produced lava flows that reached the western coast in 1813, and lava flows reached the eastern coast of the island in 1884.

Abbas sponsors birthday celebrations honoring “Martyr” Dalal Mughrabi, killer of 37

This week Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas once again honored the memory

of the terrorist Dalal Mughrabi – this time by sponsoring a ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary of her birth. Mughrabi led the worst terror attack in Israel’s history in 1978, when she and other terrorists hijacked a bus and killed 37 civilians. Present at the ceremony were Palestinian dignitaries and a children’s marching band.

Earlier this year, Abbas sponsored a computer center named after Mughrabi.

The PA further glorified Mughrabi on the date of her birth when the Governor of Ramallah announced the naming of the “Dalal Mughrabi Square”.

An article by Fatah spokesman Jamal Nazal in the official PA daily defined the terrorist Mughrabi as “the heroine of Palestine’s heroines.”

Two PA TV news broadcasts focused on the celebration: “Under the auspices of President Mahmoud Abbas, the Political and National Education Authority held a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the Shahida (Martyr) Dalal Mughrabi, commander of the Coastal Operation (i.e. hijacking of bus and killing of 37 civilians).”

These are not isolated examples of public glorification

of terrorists in the PA. The PA has a strong tradition of using terrorists as role models – especially for children — by naming public places, facilities and events after them. Dalal Mughrabi, who is not known for anything other than her murderous terror attack, is one of the prominent examples of a terrorist

who is promoted as a worthy and desirable role model.

In addition, Mughrabi is regularly honored at many official events throughout the year. At the opening ceremony of Fatah’s Sixth General Conference this summer, Fatah leaders responded with applause when former PA Prime Minister Abu Alaa (Ahmad Qurei) honored Mughrabi:

“We have in our midst the hero Khaled Abu-Usbah, hero of the operation [terror attack] led by the Shahida (Martyr) Dalal Mughrabi [applause from the audience]. We salute him and welcome him. And [we salute] the hero, the Shahida (Martyr) Dalal. [He shouts:] All the glory!

All the glory! All the glory! All the sisters here are Dalal’s sisters.”
