Nasrallah vows Hizbullah will continue arming to fight Israel

November 30, 2009

Associated Press , THE JERUSALEM POST

Hizbullah will improve its weapons capabilities to face off any Israeli threat, the group’s leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah’s said Monday, adding that armed struggle was the only way to regain “Arab lands” captured by Israel.

Nasrallah’s remarks signaled the group has no intention of meeting a United Nations resolution requiring it to give up its weapons.

Nasrallah gave no details on the weapons plans, but Hizbullah has said it has tens of thousands of rockets.

War, Hizbullah has tripled its prewar arsenal to more than 40,000 rockets, some of which can strike virtually anywhere in Israel – a dramatic improvement over the short-range missiles fired in the 2006 conflict.

Nasrallah said the buildup was necessary.

“The continuation of Israeli threats against Lebanon … force the resistance to seek more power in order to improve its capabilities,” Nasrallah told reporters via video link from a secret location.

His comments came during a news conference to announce the group’s new political manifesto, the second such manifesto since Hizbullah was founded in 1982.

While the group remains determinedly anti-Israel, its manifesto showed some signs of moderation on the Lebanese political scene, where Hizbullah holds sway with two members in the cabinet and 11 or parliament’s 128 seats.

The Shi’ite Muslim group’s first manifesto in 1985 called for establishing an Islamic state in Lebanon, but the new manifesto did not mention an Islamic state and underscored the importance of coexistence among Lebanon’s 18 religious sects.

The UN resolution that ended the 2006 war calls on Hizbullah to disarm.

Nasrallah rages against ‘hegemonic’ US

Hezbollah chief broadcasts political platform, which promotes battle against ‘unlimited expansionism’

Roee Nahmias

November 30, 2009

Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah laid out his political platform Monday during a speech filmed by closed-circuit cameras. The platform promotes armed battle against Israel and the US, as well as all of the latter’s protectorates.

“We see the US as a power that aims to impose hegemony in the region,” Nasrallah explained. “The Islamic resistance movement in Lebanon aims to fight this hegemony and the (Israeli) occupation.”

He said the US has been treating the globe as a market it aims to control, and that it was waging “a strategy of unlimited expansion”.

“The Bush administration found in September 11 a chance to impose his influence, with the excuse of a war on terror,” the Hezbollah leader said.

“He tried to create a parallel between terror and resistance.

There is no doubt that American terror is the source of all terror in the world. This administration gave itself the right to embark on a war of destruction which does not distinguish between one man and the other.”

‘Political sectarianism preventing democracy’
Israel, in Nasrallah’s view, is a “cancerous metastasis” supported by the US, which plans to conquer Lebanon and its territorial waters and is thus a “lasting threat”.

He went on to rule out negotiation with his southern neighbors, supporting this with the enumeration of his organization’s various victories.

“The resistance has managed to achieve a huge victory over the Zionist entity, provide the homeland with protection, and liberation of the remainder of its land. This function is a lasting necessity before Israel’s expansionist threats and ambitions as well as the lack of a strong government in Lebanon,” Nasrallah said, calling on civilians to enlist in his army of militants for the good of the nation.

The Hezbollah leader went on to dissect his country’s political disharmony, and to promote the “canceling out of political sectarianism, which is preventing the development of the Lebanese political system and acting as an obstacle to democracy”.

Nasrallah presented his vision of Lebanon’s future as a country that will “respect public liberty, achieve national unity, and be able to protect its land, people, sovereignty, and independence”. He added that he wanted Lebanon to have a “modern elections law”.

The leader concluded by praising Iran

as a central figure in the Muslim world. “Iran’s policy is clear: Uncompromising support for the Palestinian issue,” he said, explaining that the Islamic Republic was first to open a Palestinian Embassy on its territory, rather than an Israeli one.

Hezbollah cuts Islamist rhetoric in new manifesto

By Nadim Ladki

November 30, 2009

BEIRUT (Reuters) – Lebanon’s Hezbollah group announced a new political strategy on Monday that tones down Islamist rhetoric but maintains a tough line against Israel and the United States.

The new manifesto drops reference to an Islamic republic in Lebanon, which has a substantial Christian population, confirming changes to Hezbollah thinking about the need to respect Lebanon’s diversity.

Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who read the new “political document” at a news conference, said it was time the group introduced pragmatic changes without dropping its commitment to an Islamist ideology tied to the clerical establishment in Iran.

“People evolve. The whole world changed over the past 24 years. Lebanon changed. The world order changed,” he said via a video link.

Stressing a history of struggle against Israel, the 32-page document said Hezbollah had to remain alert and wary of Israel: “Israel represents a constant threat and an impending danger to Lebanon.”

Nasrallah, reading from the document, said U.S. “arrogance” prevented Hezbollah and other Arabs and Muslims from forging a friendship with the United States, Israel’s chief ally.

“The American administration’s unlimited support to Israel … places the American administration in the position of the enemy of our nation and our peoples,” he said.

NO DISARMAMENT

Nasrallah said Hezbollah needed to keep its arms, despite opposition from Western-backed political groups in Lebanon.

“The (resistance) is a permanent national necessity that should last as long as the Israeli threat, and in the absence of a strong, stable state in Lebanon,” he said, quoting the document.

Hezbollah was formed with the backing of Iranian Revolutionary Guards during Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in 1982. It came out into the open as a mainly guerrilla group in 1985 but quickly began establishing social and medical networks among Lebanon’s impoverished Shi’ite community.

Nasrallah said a new political document for Hezbollah was needed to cope with events since the last manifesto in 1985, when Hezbollah was more of an armed resistance group fighting Israeli occupation forces.

Hezbollah members first entered parliament in 1992 and in 2005 the group it had its first government minister, completing its rehabilitation as a political party.

Attacks by Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran and Syria, were instrumental in Israel’s decision to withdraw from south Lebanon in 2000 after a 22-year occupation.

Hezbollah, listed as a terrorist group by the United States, also fought a war with Israel in 2006 that cost Lebanon a heavy civilian toll but its guerrilla force was not defeated on the ground.

The manifesto pledges that the group would strengthen itself despite a 2006 U.N. resolution than bans arms in south Lebanon.

Israel says Syria and Iran are arming Hezbollah against international law. The manifesto confirms the need to maintain close ties with the two countries.

Nasrallah said Hezbollah has become a global model of how to fight occupation.

“Our problem with them (the Israelis) is not that they are Jews, but that they are occupiers who are raping our land and holy places,” Nasrallah said.
