Turkey Has Arrived Back on World Stage — And How!

When Turkey’s President Abdullah Gul visits India early next year he will be representing a nation that has reinvented its geostrategic role through an independent foreign policy in barely eight years.

I hope he brings along Ahmet Davutoglu, who shaped the theory and then structured the practicals, first as principal adviser to Prime Minister Recip Tayyab Erdogan, and now as Foreign Minister. He must be one of the few academics fortunate enough to get a chance to make ideas work.

The starting point was 2002, when the Justice and Development Party [AKP] won the elections and ended the monopoly on power exercised by a military-bureaucratic-civilian Istanbul-centric elite which claimed the inheritance of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and his European-style secularism which still prohibits a Turkish woman from wearing a headscarf to university. This elite protected Ataturk’s secular vision, but, somewhere along the way lost sight of Ataturk’s independence.

The wives of Erdogan and Gul wear headscarves, but that is not the point: the wives of many Cabinet ministers and high officials do not, and are not required to. What is relevant is that AKP subtly shifted a policy that had become synonymous with America’s, without the angry rhetoric that has become a regrettable hallmark of so many who strut as lead actors on the anti-American stage. AKP proved that change was possible without compromising an amicable and mutually beneficial relationship with Washington. Their predecessors had America’s friendship. AKP has America’s respect as well.

the First World War, but refused to declare war on the United States even when the latter joined the Anglo-French alliance. Even though it lost its empire in the fighting, Turkey did not permit a single enemy soldier on its territory during wartime. Istanbul was occupied only after truce.

Ataturk, victor of Gallipoli, was the great hero of this conflict; but took his true place in his nation’s history after 1918, when the vainglorious trio of Lloyd George, Winston Churchill and Clemenceau, leavening their intent with anti-Muslim Crusader sentiment, armed and financed a Greek invasion of Turkey.

Their aim was to partition the country and leave Turkey as a rump Anatolian state. Ataturk mobilised a proud army and people, and shocked the victors of World War I by destroying the Greeks after they reached the outskirts of Ankara. Ataturk, protecting his nation’s independence, kept Turkey neutral in the Second World War. Historic fears of next-door Russia, now the Soviet Union, drove Istanbul into Washington’s embrace in the Cold War. But when in the 1980s flexibility became an option, and in the 1990s a necessity, Turkey remained rigid. When it looked south it could only see Israel; when it looked east it could see nothing more than Pakistan. Both were American allies. Turkey did not have a policy or a vision for the 21st century.

Davutoglu selected the moment of departure with uncanny vision: George Bush’s war on Iraq in 2003. It gave an early sign of change, when it refused to let American troops pass through Turkey on their way to Iraq.

It also realised, fairly early, that America would be weakened by Bush’s Iraq folly, creating space for new players, since the Soviet Union was too weak to play any  role at all.

Israel and Iran have sufficient muscle to fill a regional vacuum, but both were inherently belligerent. They would be able to intervene, but as destabilisers rather than stabilisers. Iran had a natural advantage in Shia-majority Iraq, but it simultaneously provoked deep suspicions in the Arab world.

Turkey set itself up as the region’s centre of stability.

Ironically, this was its role during the days of the Ottoman Empire; but this time around, it could create an arc of influence only through diplomacy and harmony, not imposition.

Turkey set about strengthening its relations with Arab nations. It distanced itself from warriors in Israel, without breaking ties of trade and cooperation. It criticised Israel’ s Gaza war unambiguou

sly. But it realised that a critical key to peace lay in the amelioration of its own antagonisms with its neighbours. This was, given the emotionalism that is attached to

the past, difficult.

But Turkey has now signed historic protocols with Armenia, warmed icy relations with Syria to the point where visa has been abolished, lifted ties with Iran and become a vital partner of Iraq in the reconstruction of the country. In October Erdogan signed 48 MoUs covering energy, commerce and security (among other things) with Baghdad. Davutoglu paid a visit to the Kurdish Regional Government in northern Iraq, which is equivalent to an Indian Foreign Minister dropping in on Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

s bombing this Kurdish region as punishment for being a base for terrorism. Turkey, America and Iraq are working together to bring the long and bitter Kurdish war against Turkey to an end — another sign of Washington’s new respect for Istanbul.

Pakistan has recognised the change as well, but done so in its India-centric manner. It has asked Turkey to help solve the Kashmir problem. Istanbul is not so green as to try and do so; and certainly Delhi will be frosty towards any such misguided initiative. But Turkey has found its role on the world stage. A stem in the Cold War greenhouse has flowered in the fresh air of an  open mind.

I try to not offend anyone because of race, color, creed, or belief, but I am not nearly as concerned about offending Islamic soldiers in the American Armed forces, than I am about the result of fear in exercising freedom of speech. A well known man on television asked a question in his defense of Hasan: “If Hasan had been a Christian, would we call this an act of Christian radical extremism?” This is a mute question that is not justified in its comparison between the Christian and Islamic faiths.

This describes what is happening as it occurs and after it is finished by the Second Advent of Christ.

Now, let’s take a look at the aftermath of this attack after God has destroyed Gog’s army by the greatest geological holocaust that has ever occurred on this planet since God made man.

The events daily appearing in the Middle East are presently leading us to that great day of the Lord. Finally, it will be over – God’s wrath will have passed – and a remnant of Jews still in physical flesh will dig themselves out of the ashes of the Great Tribulation Period.

Verse 9 pictures these Jews gathering the war weapons of Armageddon and smelting them with fire into weapons of agriculture and commerce. It will be seven years before the metals have all been recycled into materials to be used by a nation in peaceful pursuits.

Verse 10 advises us that wood will not be used to provide the fire necessary for smelting the metal in the weapons of war. They will take the oil of the Arab nations that spoiled them in the Tribulation Period. They will use their oil to produce the fire that fires the metal into useful peacetime products.

Verse 11 describes the massive cleanup of the millions of corpses from the Battle of Armageddon that still clutter the hills of Galilee, Samaria, and Judea. They will bury them in a valley they will name “the valley of Hamon-gog.” Hamon-gog means “multitude of Gog,” and Gog is the Antichrist, so this valley can be referred to as “the graveyard of the Antichrist.” The exact location is unknown. We are merely told it will be to the east of the Dead Sea. You will not find directions listed as being anything other than north, east, west, and south in the Old Testament. Any direction from NE to SE was referred to as east, SE to SW as south, SW to NW as west, and NW to NE as north. So this burial zone could be anywhere from northeast to southeast of the Dead Sea. I rather suspect it will be to the southeast of the Dead Sea near Petra.

Verse 12 gives the length of time required to cover and bury the countless numbers of exposed bodies – seven months. However, many bodies will be buried under massive landslides associated with earthquake activity, and it will be necessary to continue to search for bodies for a much longer period of time.

Verse 13 tells us that all the Israelites will take their turn during the seven-month period of massive burials. It may be that each Israelite will be required to do one months service during the period. By the end of the seven-month period they will have buried most of the bodies.

Verse 14 advises us the compulsory graveyard service of all the Israelites will end after seven months, but that a new system will be instituted to continue the search as long as is required.

It may work something like this: the nation of Israel will take some of its men, employed in other aspects of continuous nation rebuilding, and divert them to a full-time job of overseeing and performing the removal of the remaining bodies from the land. These full-time body disposers will work together with other Israelites (passengers) that travel routinely through the land.

Verse 15 describes how the full-time grave providers and passengers will work together toward a common goal. After seven months only skeletons will remain, so when a traveler happens across a skeleton, in his normal daily pursuits, he will stick up a clearly visible marker by it. When the full-time grave providers see the marker, they will carry the bones to the Antichrist’s graveyard for burial.

Verse 16 informs us there will be so many grave provider personnel that a city named Hamonah will spring up by the Antichrist’s graveyard. Since the name Hamonah means “multitude,” it is only natural to assume the city is named in memory of its permanent residents.

Russia has formed a strategic plan for strengthening its relations with the Arab world, particularly in the economic field. The person behind this initiative, which will also include the launching of an Arab satellite from Russian soil with the help of Russian experts, is Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

London-based Arabic-language al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper reported recently that the Russian plan seeks to expand Moscow’s ties with Arab countries, especially those who do not have traditional relations with Russia, like Syria and Algeria.

Today, the volume of trade between Russia and the Arab world is estimated at $10 billion, but the Russians seek to double this sum, and even triple it, in the coming years.

According to the report, the Russians are not only interested in expanding the trade, but are also seeking to increase the bilateral investments, boosting the cooperating in the banking field and encouraging the cooperation in the technological field, including launching the satellite on a Russian missile.

The Russian aspirations are accompanied by a considerable PR effort. The Russians have decided to redistribute the Moscow News newspaper in Arabic after a 10-year break.

The newspaper’s first edition is being distributed these days in some 150,000 copies across the Arab world, using the extensive Russian mechanism in Arab countries. Putin himself offered his greetings to the Arab readers on the newspaper’s front page, praising the need to boost Russia’ s economic cooperation with the Arab world.

Earlier this year, St. Petersburg a conference which was attended by senior representatives from the Arab world, to discuss possibilities for increasing the economic cooperation between the sides.

Putin’s deputy, Igor Shuvalov, said during the conference, “The investment in the Arab world and Arab investments in Russia are very important to us, and we will work to have them realized.”

Shuvalov also noted that Russian banks were holding talks with banks from Arab countries on ways to increase the cooperation.

Qatar’s finance minister, who took part in the discussions, stated that his country was interested in joint initiatives with Russia in the energy field. Last year, Russian energy company Gazprom decided to establish a “troika” with Qatar and Iran in order to strengthen the cooperation in the gad industry. These three countries control the global production of natural gas.

Iran is ready to launch its second homemade spy satellite, with the Safir 2 rocket (Messenger of Ambassador) already in position on its pad, DEBKAfile’s military and intelligence sources report.

The new satellite weighs 200 kgs, ten times more than Omid 1 (Hope), which was successfully tested only ten months ago, on Feb. 2. Tehran’s missile program is clearly rushing forward at a rapid pace. In fact, some Western and Israeli missile experts suspect it may have overtaken North Korea and that Iran no longer stands in need of technical assistance from Pyongyang or Beijing.

If the second launch succeeds, it would mean that Iran is capable of producing solid fuel-powered rockets with a range of 2,450-2,450 kilometers, which covers not only all of Israel but would reach as deep into Europe as the Polish capital of Warsaw. Heads of the Islamic regime in Tehran hope that the advent of a second Iranian spy satellite in Middle East skies, boosted by the new Safir rocket, will so astound the Americans and Israelis that they will think twice before going after Iran’s nuclear installations.

Most of all, they want Israel to count the cost of being subjected to their high-grade lethal weaponry before embarking on military action.

In contrast to the Netanyahu government’s outcry over the capture of the Iranian arms ship bound for Hizballah last week (“this is a real war crime”), Israel has made very little of two ominous spurts in Iran’s progress toward a nuclear military capability.

Iran’s parliament (Majlis) Sunday, Nov. 8, granted president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad unlimited control of an estimated $30-50 billion of national treasure under legislation empowering him to cancel government subsidies on food and fuel.

He gained majority endorsement for these measures over the objections of the Speaker Ali Larijani, who demanded Majlis oversight of the recycled expenditure.

Dr. Ghazi Al-Rababah told the Jordanian Al-Arab Alyawm newspaper that the first war would be in Shebaa farms area, a small part of which Lebanon and Syria have been trying to force Israel to surrender.

Although Israel is taking steps to solve the water shortage by building desalination plants that will be in full production in four years, al-Rababah declared that Israel will wage war against Egypt within seven years in order to control the Nile River.

He accused Israel of “stealing hundreds of millions cubic meters of water from the Litani water in Lebanon, which has violated agreements by diverting water from flowing across the border.

The professor also repeated charges that Israel is stealing water from the Palestinian Authority and that it is sending contaminated water to Gaza.

The Amnesty International organization recently issued a report that condemned Israel for alleged restrictions of water to Gaza. The Israel Water Authority released statistics showing that Israelis actually have been allocated less water per capita since 1967, when Egypt and Jordan fled from Judea, Samaria and Gaza, while the Arab residents in the same areas have been using more water per capita.

Arabs in Judea and Samaria also have been illegally drilling for water in violation of the Oslo Accords signed more than 15 years ago.

Jordan is considered one of Israel’s warmest Arab neighbors, and the two countries signed a peace treaty in 1994, making Jordan the second Arab country to end hostilities with the Jewish state. Israel and Jordan also conduct a large export-import trade.

Water is in very short supply in all of Israel, and an every increasing demand ranks it at the top of national interest. It is more than worth going to war over, because without it Israel would cease to exist.

It is a constant problem for Israel with Lebanon and Syria. The five upper headwater tributaries of the Jordan have their sources in the snows of the upper Golan Heights and in the Syrian and Lebanese ranges just across the northern border of Israel. Tampering with these water sources, at some point in time after Israel has been lulled into a false peace mode, could be used as a clever ploy to get Israel to push north into Syria and Lebanon, thinking they could take care of the problem.

Israeli officials have been closely observing water being pumped from the Wazzani River, which is a tributary of the Hatzbani River.

The Hatzbani flows into the the Sea of Galilee, which empties into the Jordan. The last time I was in Israel, just before the intifada, the Lebanese had already begun to pump water by a pipeline extending into the Wazzani. Shortly after I returned to the United States they installed a much larger pipe, and now they are installing one almost a foot and a half in diameter. One that large can pump a lot of water. Lebanon claims it is only pumping about five million cubic meters a year, and that it is entitled to fifty million cubic meters according to international water treaties. Israel claims that when the current project is completed by Lebanon, then some twenty-five percent of the Wazzani’s flow will be drained off by its northern neighbor each year.

PM Warns Lebanon Over Wazzani Waters

Israel will not accept Lebanese plans to draw additional water from the Wazzani River, which ultimately flows into Lake Kinneret, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon warned Tuesday.

Israel Radio said the government had relayed its concern to Lebanon along with calls to stop the project.

According to reports in the Lebanese press, work on laying 16-inch diameter pipes to be used to convey water from the Wazzani, a tributary of the Hatzbani, to towns and villages in south Lebanon has been completed.

The next stage of the project is slated to involve the construction of an enlarged pumping station and a reservoir from where the water will be channelled into the pipeline.

The entire project, being carried out by the Council of the South which is affiliated with Amal and its leader, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Beri, is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

So far the Lebanese government has rejected Israel’s warnings and international pressure to stop the project which Sharon was quoted as saying was in breach of previous water treaties, including unwritten accords.

There are no accurate assessments of how much the Lebanese pumping project would drain from the Hatzbani and ultimately the Kinneret, although some estimates have put the amount as high as 50 million cubic meters a year.

This is the equivalent of the quantity Israel intends to import from Turkey each year, as well as the total annual production capacity of a major seawater desalination unit.
